Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 16, 2013

DEAR JERRY: There are hundreds or even thousands of internet radio stations now, with channels for every conceivable style of music.

The programs are free, and non-stop, but they don't always identify what's being played.

There is one killer ballad I heard on the doo-wop channel that I'm hoping you can identify.

It begins with "Since you've been gone, I hear an echo in my heart." All or part of that may be the title. Sounds like either a 1950s or '60s group.

Any thoughts?
—Lester Hannaman, Franklin, Tenn.

DEAR LESTER: Yes, I'm thinking what you heard is one of only two possibilities. Either way, the title is just "Echo in My Heart."

First we have it by the Stereos, who, despite their stage name, recorded only in monaural. This single, issued in 1962 (Columbia 42626), is extremely rare and somewhat pricey, selling in the $500 to $1,000 range.

Then, 30 years later and seemingly out of nowhere, the 5 Majors, led by Dom D'Elia, revived "Echo in My Heart."

Their 1992 recording (JG 100) is nearly identical to the original, and generally thought to be just as good.

Even with the similarities, there is one sure way to know which "Echo" you're hearing.

At the ending of the Stereos track, the music simply fades out, whereas the 5 Majors end it cold (no fade).

DEAR JERRY: I've enjoyed your frequent coverage of so-called regional hits, records that were played in certain sections of the country, but never quite sold well enough to be nationwide hits.

Therefore I am certain you can help my foggy memory regarding two songs played in the San Bernardino-Riverside area in late 1963 and early '64. on KMEN and KFXM, then the two Top 40 stations in the Inland Empire.

One is a drag racing song that was played at the same time as "Drag City" (Jan & Dean). They both start out with the same revving engine sounds.

The other song is by a girl group, and in the style of the Ronettes. In it, the singer is pining over her breakup with a boy named Joe. I think he hooked up with her ex-best friend.

Those are the only clues I can provide.
—Joe Bertrand, Redlands, Calif.

DEAR JOE: Now it's clear why you liked a song in which Joe is so popular.

Seriously, both clues are terrific because they point directly to the songs in question.

"Drag City" made its Hot 100 debut December 7, 1963, and the only other hot rod tune being played there at that time was "Big Mean Drag Machine," by Lynn Bryson (Hook 12863). Interestingly, the Hook selection number is also release date: 12/8/63.

It's not really a car song, but Freddy Cannon's "Abigail Beecher" (his history teacher) was also on the charts then. Everyone at the school knew when Abigail arrived for work, by "the roar of her (Jaguar) XK-E."

Foggy memory number two is one of those faux Wall of Sound recordings, and, as you discovered, truly inspired by Spector's productions for the Ronettes.

This girl group is the Joys, and their Spector-like number is "I Still Love Him" (Valiant 6042), with "him" being Joe. It too was played in late 1963.

Meanwhile, two authentic Spector productions were on the charts at that same time, "Baby I Love You" (Ronettes), and "Little Boy" (Crystals).

IZ ZAT SO? Most of the artists whose recordings emulate Phil Spector's distinctive techniques and gimmicks are unknown, even to staunch music collectors.

Most, but not all.

A handful of those artists are famous to varying degrees, especially Cher; Shelley Fabares; Chiffons; Shangri-las; Linda Scott; Earl-Jean/Cookies; Nino Tempo & April Stevens; Jackie Lee; Carol Connors; and Diane Renay.

Tunes by these stars, along with ones by several dozen unknown acts, make up the dazzling three-disc CD collection, "Touch the Wall of Sound (60 Spectacular Sound Gems from the Sixties - Rare Phil Spector Style Productions Done By Others)."

About the only essential track they missed is "Too Hurt to Cry, Too Much in Love to Say Goodbye," by the Darnells, but perhaps they were unable to license it from Motown.

However, this package does include "I Still Love Him," by the Joys.

Though a Japanese import from the '90s, "Touch the Wall of Sound" is still available on Amazon, eBay, and other online sources, usually for about $15 per disc.

Social Distortion - While Light White Heat White Trash

In 1996 Social Distortion released their 5th album, White Light, White Heat, White Trash. The line-up featured a new drummer Chuck Biscuits (Black Flag/Danzig and many more). White Light, White Heat, White Trash was the last album with Dennis Danell on guitar (he sadly died in February 2000). The album received Social Distortion's highest ever chart position, entering the Billboard 200 album chart at #27. It also includes radio favourites : "I Was Wrong" and "When The Angels Sing" and a superb cover version of the Stones' "Under My Thumb". Stylistically, the album is harder and considered a return to their hardcore punk roots. Social Distortion is something of a legend in the punk genre and still continues to receive worldwide respect and support.

how cool is this:

Florida Atlantic University Giving Away Vinyl Records

Florida Atlantic University’s Recorded Sound Archives, which preserves and digitizes rare and historic recordings, will host its third annual giveaway of excess vinyl records from Monday, Jan. 6 through Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, and again from Monday, Jan. 27 through Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Wimberly Library, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

The giveaway, which is free and open to the FAU community as well as the general public, features thousands of LPs and 45 rpm vinyl discs that span from the 1940s to the 1990s and features every genre, including pop, Latin, jazz, classical, opera and orchestra music. Cassette tapes and CDs also are available.

Created in 2010 to collect, organize and protect access to digitized copies of vintage audio recordings, the RSA houses more than 150,000 jazz, Judaic and vintage recordings, making FAU Libraries one of the top 20 libraries in the nation for sound recordings.

“The RSA receives 10,000 records every year from people all over the county who want to be part of our preservation effort,” said Maxine Schackman, the RSA’s director. “Many of these recordings are either duplicates or outside the range of our collection criteria. These excess recordings pile up over time, so each year we give the community a chance to browse through them and take what they want.”

Establishing one of the most instantly recognizable sounds in rock; Carlos’ signature tone and phrasing coupled with Afro-Cuban percussion virtually launched Latin-Rock fusion. Both AM and FM airwaves were scorched in the ensuing months with their charted singles "Evil Ways" (#9) and Jingo (#93) plus "Soul Sacrifice", a favorite after it’s featured spot in the Woodstock movie and soundtrack.

Buckley recorded the album’s 12 songs in Los Angeles with the team behind The Doors—producer Paul Rothchild and engineer Bruce Botnick. He was backed in the studio by guitarist and longtime collaborator Lee Underwood, bassist James Fielder, and Mothers Of Invention drummer Billy Mundi. Van Dyke Parks, who had spent much of that summer collaborating with Beach Boy Brian Wilson on the legendary Smile album, was brought in to overdub keyboards, and frequent Phil Spector sidekick Jack Nitzsche contributed string arrangements. The DELUXE EDITION features both the stereo and mono mixes of the album, which contains several of Buckley’s early classics, including the singles “Wings” and “Aren’t You The Girl.” The music on the second disc has remained unreleased until now and provides an unparalleled insight into Buckley’s early development. It opens with 12 songs he recorded in November 1965 with The Bohemians, a group he formed in high school with Fielder, Beckett, and guitarist Brian Hartzler. Recorded live in an Anaheim studio, the originals include early versions of “She Is” and “It Happens Every Time”—two tracks that later appeared on Buckley’s debut. The session also yielded rockers like “Put You Down” and “Come On Over” and the ballads “Call Me If You Do” and “No More.” The nine songs that make up the second half of the disc were recorded shortly before the sessions for Tim Buckley and feature Buckley singing and playing acoustic guitar with Beckett, who recites poetry to Buckley’s guitar on two tracks: “Found At The Scene Of A Rendezvous That Failed” and “Birth Day.” The home recording captures versions of the album tracks: “She Is,” “Aren’t You The Girl,” “Wings,” “Song Slowly Song,” and “I Can’t See You.” The two remaining songs are the Buckley original “My Love Is For You” and the Beckett/Buckley collaboration “Long Tide.”

•Includes weathered cardboard folio with rare photos[stop]
•Features nearly 2 dozen unreleased tracks on 2 CD's
•46 tracks re-mastered by original engineer Bruce Botnick

Concert, SHOWTIME® documentary, and live album produced by Inside Llewyn Davis writer / director / producers Joel and Ethan Coen and soundtrack producer T Bone Burnett

Album features live performances by the film’s star, Oscar Isaac, as well as The Avett Brothers, Joan Baez, Rhiannon Giddens, Colin Meloy, The Milk Carton Kids, Marcus Mumford, Punch Brothers, Dave Rawlings Machine, Patti Smith, Gillian Welch, Willie Watson, Jack White

Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of "Inside Llewyn Davis," a one-night-only concert, was held at New York City’s Town Hall on September 29, 2013, to celebrate the music of the Golden Globe–nominated film Inside Llewyn Davis. The evening was filmed for a documentary that will be broadcast by SHOWTIME beginning this Friday, December 13, at 10 PM, and Nonesuch Records will release a live album from the concert in late winter/early spring 2014 (details to follow soon). The concert, documentary, and live album were produced by Inside Llewyn Davis writer/director/producers Joel and Ethan Coen and soundtrack producer T Bone Burnett. Huffington Post called the concert “one of those only-in-New-York events,” while Rolling Stone said it was “a bustling salute to the sounds and the idea of Sixties folk music,” and continued, “For all the formality of the night, which was exceedingly well-paced and organized, the concert recalled a time when one or two people, bearing one or two unplugged instruments, could be as enthralling as the greatest rock or EDM track.”

Nonesuch released the soundtrack to Inside Llewyn Davis on November 11, 2013. Produced by T Bone Burnett, Joel Coen, and Ethan Coen, with Marcus Mumford as its associate producer, the album features 12 new recordings created especially for the film and soundtrack. Also included is a never-before-released recording of Bob Dylan performing his song “Farewell,” which was originally recorded during the sessions for his album The Times They Are A-Changin', and is available exclusively on this soundtrack. To pick up a copy of the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack, head to the Nonesuch Store, where CD and vinyl orders include a download of the complete album at checkout. Both are now 35% off the standard retail price (about 20% off the everyday low prices listed on the site) as part of the current Nonesuch Store anniversary sale.

5 Holiday Gifts For The Vinyl Record Lover

Yes, it's that time of year, stores are bustling and overcrowded and parking is a nightmare. And finding gifts for everyone on your Christmas list, well it just seems that you will never get it all done in time.  Here's where we can help.  Have a music lover and specifically a vinyl record lover on your list?  Here are the basics to make a vinyl lover cry happy tears:

1. Turntable - Yes, a new turntable would certainly be tops on the list.  But, there are so many to choose from with varying prices.  Where can I get a decent set up that won't break the bank account?

Audio-Technica - AT-LP120USB Turntable is our choice and at under $300, it has all the bells and whistles.  This professional stereo turntable features a high-torque direct-drive motor for quick start-ups and a USB output that connects directly to your computer. Other features include: forward and reverse play capability; cast aluminum platter with slip mat and a start/stop button; three speeds 33/45/78; selectable high-accuracy quartz-controlled pitch lock and pitch change slider control with +/-10% or +/-20% adjustment ranges; and removable hinged dust cover. A selectable internal stereo phono pre-amplifier allows the turntable to plug directly to components with no dedicated turntable input. A USB cable and adapter cables are included along with Mac and PC-compatible Audacity software to digitize your LPs.

2. Headphones - Can't keep the neighbors up all night, a good set of headphones would please even the most hard to shop for music lover.

Audio-Technica - ATH-AD700 (Open-Air Dynamic Headphone) is a great choice. With a lightweight honeycomb aluminum casing and magnesium frame structure, these open-air headphones produce no sense of pressure on the ears, offering a completely natural listening experience. The sound is smooth and relaxed, with deep resonating bass and vocal projection. The self-adjusting wing support automatically adjusts to your head size for easy-wearing listening comfort. A straight cord at the left earpiece terminates to a mini plug with included ¼" adapter.

3. Vinyl Record Cleaning Equipment - No collector of new and used vinyl can do without an affordable machine to clean vinyl.  Sure you can spend thousands of dollars on other models, when you have an affordable option, why not try it?

What is the best way to clean vinyl records?  Spin-Clean® -- an easy, effective, and affordable way to clean your LPs, 45s, and 78 RPMs without using your valuable turntable as the cleaning device.  With the Spin-Clean® Record Washer MK II record cleaning system, you’ll add years to all of your equipment including your turntable, stylus (needle) and, of course, your record collection.

4. Frames - No music room is complete without some quality, framed art.  And framing some album covers or picture discs will not break any budget, they are part of your budding collection.  We recommend the ones that are used in the Smithsonian, HGTV, Capitol, Sony and Warner Bros. Records and any more:  The Rock Art Picture Show Record Album Frame.  The patented frame DOES NOT use clips to press LP's into place, just slide your LP into our acrylic Record Album Frame to easily mat and frame your record album cover instantly.

5. Vinyl Records - yes, that is the purpose and the vinyl record collecting world has taken off in the past few years and there are a slew of new online sites to buy vinyl.  Below, we recommend some of our favorites:

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 9, 2013

DEAR JERRY: A few years ago you solved the mystery of when and who was the first American dee jay to play a Beatles record.

Perhaps in your research of that topic you came across something to shed some light on a part of Beatlemania that I have never seen discussed.

In 1964, several radio stations around the country devoted an hour each week to Beatles songs. Here, WABC and WMCA were both trying to be New York's "official" Beatles station, and did things like that.

But who really was first in the nation with an all-Beatles show?
—Thelma Wiggins, New York

DEAR THELMA: I was expecting the answer to be either New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, yet it is none of those. It is in fact a very small market station.

The American pioneer of the weekly Beatles hour is WEEL, in Fairfax, Va. (pop. 15,000), and they were airing it in mid-January, 1964!

One of the trade magazines reporting on this event was Billboard, and here is what they wrote in the January 25, 1964 issue:

"WEEL (AM-1310), Fairfax, Va., inaugurated what is likely the first series in the country revolving around the Beatles. Through the cooperation of Giant Music and Capitol Records, a weekly one-hour program, ('Beatles Bonanza') is offered on Saturday night. The Beatles' past hits, interviews with visiting Britons, and future merchandising of Beatles jewelry, wigs, and other promotional items fill out the hour."

Since this month is the 50th anniversary of the record that enabled the Beatles to conquer the music world, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" b/w "I Saw Her Standing There," let's stay with that theme:

DEAR JERRY: In the 1960s I lived in Blackpool, the next major city north of Liverpool. Naturally, we got the latest news about all the Merseybeat groups.

One of the BBC entertainment news shows back then reported that, for the first time ever, all the Top 10 hits on the NME (New Musical Express) survey were by UK artists. This was, and still is, hard to believe.

What's more, I have never heard this mentioned again, anywhere at any time.

Can you confirm this strange claim?
—William Bradford, Jacksonville, Fla.

DEAR WILLIAM: I can, but as you know, truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. In this case, it speaks to the tremendous influence American music once had in the UK.

The NME singles survey debuted in Nov. 1952, and almost immediately (Nov. 22) the entire Top 10 was occupied by British label versions of U.S. hits by U.S. performers:

1. "Here in My Heart" (Al Martino)
2. "Feet Up (Pat Him on the Po-Po)" (Guy Mitchell)
3. "Half As Much" (Rosemary Clooney)
4. "Isle of Innisfree" (Bing Crosby)
5. "You Belong to Me" (Jo Stafford)
6. "Somewhere Along the Way" (Nat King Cole)
7. "High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me)" (Frankie Laine)
8. "Because You're Mine" (Mario Lanza)
9. "Take My Heart" (Al Martino)
10. "My Love and Devotion" (Doris Day)

Not a Brit in the bunch. Incidentally, those years were never referred to as an American Invasion, but it clearly was.

Over the next eleven years, most of their Top 10 tunes were by Americans, a trend that ended 50 years ago this month — thanks to the Beatles, and other English acts swept along by Beatlemania.

Although there were no American artists in the NME Top 10 in Dec. 1964, it was not yet exclusively British. Artists such as Los Indios Tabajaras (Brazil) and the Singing Nun (Belgium) prevented total UK dominance.

The U.S. rebounded briefly over the next few weeks, with Brenda Lee ("As Usual") and Gene Pitney ("Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa").

Finally, for the week of March 7, 1964, not just the Top 10, but the NME Top 14 consisted of homegrown artists to the exclusion of all others:

1. "Anyone Who Had a Heart" (Cilla Black)
2. "Bits and Pieces" (Dave Clark Five)
3. "Diane" (Bachelors)
4. "I Think of You" (Merseybeats)
5. "Not Fade Away" (Rolling Stones)
6. "Needles and Pins" (Searchers)
7. "Little Children" (Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas)
8. "I'm the One" (Gerry and the Pacemakers)
9. "Candy Man" (Brian Poole and the Tremeloes)
10. "Boys Cry" (Eden Kane)
11. "5-4-3-2-1" (Manfred Mann)
12. "Over You" (Freddie and the Dreamers)
13. "Stay Awhile" (Dusty Springfield)
14. "I'm the Lonely One" (Cliff Richard)

Conspicuous by their absence here are the Beatles, they who opened the floodgates for all of these groups. Before their rise to stardom, with "Please Please Me" (Feb. 2, 1963), of these 14 acts, only Cliff Richard, and to a lesser extent, Eden Kane, enjoyed meaningful chart success.

IZ ZAT SO? Ironically, the Fab Four were MIA that week because "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was dropping out of the Top 30, and "Can't Buy Me Love" was just two weeks away from debuting at No. 1.

Meanwhile, advance orders for "Can't Buy Me Love" were well over one million, with some estimates as high as 1.7 million copies, the most for any record in British history.

Phil Spector & Various Artists - A Christmas Gift For You

In 1963, visionary producer Phil Spector, then at the peak of his creativity and cultural influence, created one of the first—and still one of the greatest—rock ’n’ roll Christmas albums. Using the artist roster of his Philles label—the Ronettes, the Crystals, Darlene Love and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans—and the legendary studio musicians of the Wrecking Crew, Spector applied his fabled Wall of Sound to a set of Christmas pop standards and holiday-themed originals.

Social Distortion - Somewhere Between Heaven

The American punk rock band Social Distortion formed in 1978 in Fullerton, California. Frontman of the band is vocalist, guitar player and main songwriter Mike Ness. Since its inception the band lineup has been a virtual revolving-door of talent, with many members coming and going with the only constant member being Mike Ness. Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell is their fourth studio album originally released in 1992. It continues the melding of country and rockabilly influences with punk that began two albums before with the album Prison Bound. Clear influences include Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. The album also marks the first time that a Social Distortion line-up had not changed in three consecutive studio recordings.
