The Haden Triplets - The Haden Triplets

Third Man Records is proud to present the debut album from The Haden Triplets, daughters of Jazz bass legend Charlie Haden. These are songs steeped in history and sung in a close harmony that could only be achieved from sharing a lifetime of sisterly togetherness and a near psychic vocal interplay that can only come from being born mere seconds apart from each other. It's been rendered and produced beautifully by American music legend Ry Cooder. This is an album expanding on an American musical tradition. It is not pastiche or a tribute, but rather a direct antecedent and extension of the original folk legacy that is being exhibited within these songs.

*PRE-ORDER* Please note that ALL items included with this order will not ship until the on sale date of Tuesday February 04.

David Bowie Rebel Rebel 40th Anniversary Picture Disc Coming In March

Rebel Rebel is the next release in the continuing run of David Bowie limited edition 40th anniversary 7” picture discs.

The record will be the seventh in the series, due to be issued by Parlophone on March 10th, with the usual regional variations.

Originally released on February 15th 1974, Rebel Rebel was a first taste from the upcoming Diamond Dogs LP, though it was considered a bit of a curveball compared to much of the music on that album.

It was the first release since the dissolution of The Spiders From Mars, though stylistically it may have been more at home on Aladdin Sane, with its up-tempo, Stones feel and with an unmistakable and instantly recognisable riff played by Bowie. A riff that he was more than grateful to have conjured up, later saying of it: “It's a fabulous riff! Just fabulous! When I stumbled onto it, it was 'Oh, thank you!'”.

The track reached #5 on the UK singles chart and even managed a placing in the US Billboard Hot 100, no doubt helped by the US version of the single released in the US, Canada and Mexico in May of the same year.

The A-side of the 40th anniversary edition features the original single mix of Rebel Rebel, which hasn't been available on 7" since the early 80's and sadly remains unavailable on CD to this day.

The AA-side has the aforementioned US Version, which is a remixed edit of the song with overdubs and extra backing vocals, more akin to the version Bowie would play on the North American Diamond Dogs Tour that year.

The photographs on the disc were taken of Bowie while in Amsterdam promoting the single and recording the Rebel Rebel video for the Dutch Top Pop television show in February 1974.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at OmnivoreRecordings

This Is Lone Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983

It can be difficult to capture the live power of band on a studio recording. Thankfully, Lone Justice (Maria McKee, Ryan Hedgecock, Marvin Etzioni, and Don Heffington) went into Suite 16 Studios in December of 1983 and laid down much of the set list they were packing Los Angeles area clubs with.

Recorded direct to 2-track tape by engineer David Vaught and with no overdubs, those twelve tracks can finally be heard in their entirety as This Is Lone Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983. As Billboard’s Chris Morris writes in his liner notes, the release “offers the best representation of the band in its infancy—hot, full of piss and vinegar, and ready to take on the world.”

Nine of these twelve tracks are previously unissued, and include originals (including “Soap, Soup And Salvation”, which would appear on their Geffen debut two years later) to the covers they made their own in concert (Johnny Cash and June Carter (Cash)’s “Jackson” and “Nothing Can Stop My Loving You,” written by George Jones and Roger Miller.)

Available on CD and LP (with the first pressing on translucent red vinyl), in addition to Morris’ liners, the package contains an essay from the band’s Ryan Hedgecock, as well as a remembrance of David Vaught from Marvin Etzioni and an loving endorsement from Dolly Parton. With unseen photos and memorabilia, this collection is what Lone Justice fans have been waiting for. This Is Lone Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983 takes us back to a time when music had an energy that was hard to contain. Thanks to that studio in Van Nuys, CA, and this release, Justice has been served!

Available January 14, 2014

The Blues Brothers 'Briefcase Full of Blues' Being Reissued On Vinyl

'Briefcase Full Of Blues,' the debut album from The Blues Brothers (John Belushi and Dan Akroyd) is going to be reissued on vinyl and is now up for pre-order. The album is being pressed on 180-gram vinyl (for the first time) while being mastered from the original tapes.

Recorded in 1978 at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles, the late great John Belushi and Dan Akroyd opened a set before comedian and good friend Steve Martin. To the crowd’s amazement, the duo blasted them a blistering rock ‘n’ blues performance which was captured on tape for their first album Briefcase Full Of Blues. They later appeared on SNL and the rest as they say is history, as this stunt became reality in no time and thus began a short lived but amazing piece of rock and blues history.

Released during the holiday season, the album became a number one smash and netted two smash singles with the classic nod to the Stax sound with Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man” as well as the ‘50s doo wop classic, “Rubber Biscuit.”  Pre-Orders are now being accepted at Amazon.

The reissue will be released on February 25th.

Warpaint's New Album On Red Vinyl

We're extremely excited to share Warpaint's mesmerising second album 'Warpaint' with you, a week before release (20th Jan UK / 21st Jan US)!

WARPAINT is a Los Angeles based quartet comprised of Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), Theresa Wayman (guitar/vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums). To say that this follow-up is "highly anticipated" is an understatement considering the reception that their debut received when it was released at the end of 2010.

Warpaint was recorded and mixed by Flood, aside from two songs that were mixed by Nigel Godrich. The album was conceived after some truly inspirational writing and recording sessions that took place in The Joshua Tree late last year. The band was joined there by visionary director Chris Cunningham, who has partnered with them for many of the album visuals including the cover. He spent two years filming and photographing the band as they made new music.

Warpaint is a well-oiled machine. They weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy. Both live and on record, Warpaint sound like they're channeling something truly otherworldly, and mystical. They are also a band that truly enjoys playing together. Emily and Theresa have been friends since they were kids, and the bond that the four of them have is truly special.

All LPs come on red colored vinyl and include and MP3 download.

U2 - Joshua Tree

The Joshua Tree is the fifth studio album by rock band U2. Produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, it was released on 9 March 1987 by Island Records. In contrast to the ambient experimentation of their 1984 release, The Unforgettable Fire, on The Joshua Tree U2 aimed for a harder-hitting sound within the limitation of conventional song structures. The album is influenced by American and Irish roots music, and depicts the band's love-hate relationship with the United States, with socially and politically conscious lyrics embellished with spiritual imagery.

Inspired by American tour experiences, literature, and politics, U2 chose America as a theme for the record. Recording began in January 1986 in Ireland, and to foster a relaxed, creative atmosphere, the group recorded in two houses, in addition to two professional studios. Several events during the sessions helped shape the conscious tone of the album, including the band's participation in A Conspiracy of Hope tour, the death of roadie Greg Carroll, and lead vocalist Bono's travels to Central America. Recording was completed in November 1986; additional production continued into January 1987. Throughout the sessions, U2 sought a "cinematic" quality for the record, one that would evoke a sense of location, in particular, the open spaces of America. They represented this in the sleeve photography depicting them in American desert landscapes.

The Joshua Tree received critical acclaim, topped the charts in over 20 countries, and sold in record-breaking numbers. According to Rolling Stone, the album increased the band's stature "from heroes to superstars". It produced the hit singles "With or Without You", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", and "Where the Streets Have No Name". The album won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988. The group supported the record with the Joshua Tree Tour throughout 1987. Frequently featured on critics' lists of rock's greatest records, The Joshua Tree is one of the world's best-selling albums, with over 25 million copies sold. In 2007, U2 released a remastered edition of the record to commemorate its 20th anniversary.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 6, 2014

DEAR JERRY: Long ago around this time of year you wrote about Vic Dana's "Little Altar Boy," and how it inexplicably has become a Christmas classic, even though it has nothing whatsoever to do with Christmas, or any holiday or season.

Now I'm curious about some of the other so-called Christmas songs that really aren't.
—Julia Fisher, Chicago

DEAR JULIA: Unraveling that which causes curiosity is just one of my many services.

Among the songs frequently heard this time of year, here is a qualifying batch that are, as you say, Christmas songs that really aren't.

Most are about the weather or activities associated with winter. None mention or refer to Christmas; Yule; Santa Claus; St. Nick; Nativity; presents or gifts; "the holidays."

They are alphabetical by title, with artists named only for ones that may be less familiar and haven't been recorded by numerous artists:

"Baby, It's Cold Outside"
"Bells of St. Mary's"
"Frosty the Snowman"
"I Like a Sleighride (Jingle Bells)" (Peggy Lee)
"It's a Marshmallow World"
"Jingle Bell Rock"
"Jingle Bells"
"Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!"
"Little Altar Boy" (Vic Dana)
"Marvelous Toy" (Chad Mitchell Trio)
"Parade of Wooden Soldiers"
"Sleigh Ride"
"Snow Flake" (Jim Reeves)
"Snowman Snowman, Sweet Potato Nose" (Jaynettes)
"Suzy Snowflake" (Rosemary Clooney)
"Winter Weather" (Ronny and the Daytonas)
"Yingle Bells" (Yogi Yorgesson)

Even among these selections, "Little Altar Boy" stands alone as the farthest removed from any December or winter doings.

DEAR JERRY: In October I bid on "Trying to Understand a Woman," backed with "Can't Keep Foolin'" (Mascot 121), by a group called Pango.

Even though I wasn't the winner — it sold for about $60 — I do have questions about that record.

The eBay seller did not provide an audio sample, but he described it as "Rare 1970s Latin funk." Would you agree?

Is Pango a Jamaican or South American group? Do you know the exact year for it?

Meanwhile, in my online search for Pango answers, I also found references to a Mascot 121 single by Motion. The tracks on their single are "What Is the Reason" and "One Afternoon."

Is there just a typo on the site that I found, or did Mascot really use the same catalog number twice?
—C.F. Butler, Forks, Wash.

DEAR C.F.: Geographically speaking, Arizona-based Pango was many time zones away from South America, as well as to the village of Pango.

That Pango is a small community at the southeastern corner of Efate Island in the Republic of Vanuatu, part of an archipelago between Australia and Fiji.

The Phoenix band Pango was led by Roy Figueroa, previously the front man for Roy and the Dew Drops (1965). It does seem doubtful that Figueroa chose his new group's name based on the Pango in the South Pacific.

Latin funk is an appropriate description of this Hispanic group's style, and their 1973 Mascot recordings.

As for why the duplication of release numbers, I asked Dwayne Witten, now the owner of most of the Mascot masters, and he has no idea why. Because Motion's Mascot 121 came out in 1968, and Pango's in 1973, Dwayne suggests, after five years, they may have simply forgotten what the next number used should have been.

For more information about the great new CD album, "Mascot Records - Jack Curtis Story" (1958-1973), as well as to order, just head on over to Amazon.com and search their Music section for "Mascot Records."

IZ ZAT SO? From my conversation with Dwayne Witten, I learned there is yet another Mascot record numbered 121. Gadzooks!

As a member of another '60s band on Mascot, named George Washington Bridge (a.k.a. GWB), Witten recalls that the very first copies of Motion's "What Is the Reason" came with labels that mistakenly credited GWB. Dwayne still has one of those oddities in his collection, and he graciously sent me a label scan.

The 121 GWB flub probably came about because the previous number (Mascot 120), "Butterball," really is by his group.

I can't think of another example of three different records, involving three different groups, on the same label, all having the same selection number.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Vinyl Record Sales Soar In 2013

Last year, Record Store Day sales hit an all-time high as 244,000 LPs were sold, more than any since SoundScan began tracking vinyl record sales in 1991.  Sales of vinyl have increased worldwide and the renewed interest in this historic audio medium is refreshing to both, long standing audiophiles and for the vinyl record collectors.  More and more musicians recognize the value of vinyl and are making sure to satisfy their listeners palettes with special pressings and colored releases; proving irresistible to vinyl record collectors.

Sales of vinyl albums in the UK are also at a 15 year high, according to new figures revealed by the British Phonographic Industry. They report that 780,000 vinyl albums were sold in 2013, the highest number since 1997.

Statista's chart shows the rise of vinyl LP sales in the US between 1993 and 2013.  Hail Vinyl!

Joyful Noise 2014 Flexi Disc Series!

The 2014 Flexi Series is here! New, unreleased recordings from 12 of our favorite bands... released monthly on square, single-sided, clear 7" Flexi Discs, and strictly limited to just 1000 copies.

The Flexi Disc Series is a platform for our favorite artists to release never-before-heard recordings on a fleeting analog format. Artists are encuraged to be as adventurous as possible for the duration of one single-sided flexi disc. These recordings will not be released digitally or on any other format. That is to say, the total existance of the song limited to just 1000 copies, on an increasingly-degrading analog format. These are unique and ephemeral tracks from some of the best bands in the world.

This year's roster includes exclusive tracks from:  Big Business, Born Ruffians, Daniel Johnston, DM Stith, Fang Island, Half Japanese, Joan of Arc, Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s, Marnie Stern, Mount Eerie, Serengeti, and Yip Deceiver.

WTF is a Flexi Disc you ask? Essentially it's a paper-thin vinyl record. And these particular Flexis are clear, single-sided, 7" squares. A pretty unusual format, but playable on any standard turntable.

Joyful Noise will never release these flexi recordings digitally or in any other format. They are strictly limited to 1000 copies, exclusively on Flexi Disc.

Culted - Oblique to All Paths

CULTED’s story is a unique one:  4 band members spread out over multiple countries and continents, having never performed music together in the same room coming together through the wonders of modern technology to create totally compelling top of the line doom.  While CULTED’s writing and recording process may be unusual, and a story unto itself, it certainly should not overshadow what this band has accomplished---creating a bleak and epic masterpiece of dystopian doom.  Cinematic in its scope, ‘Oblique To All Paths’ is a beautifully haunting and grim piece of sprawling doom metal—the perfect soundtrack to a desolate, barren winter.

THE HOLD STEADY SIGN TO NEW LABEL WASHINGTON SQUARE

New Album To Be Released In March 2014

New York, NY) – The Hold Steady has signed to Washington Square, a new label imprint formed by Razor & Tie.  The band has signed a worldwide multi-album deal that will see the release of a new studio album Teeth Dreams on March 25th 2014.   The album is produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Rush, Evanescence).   The Hold Steady will also kick off a string of tour dates in January 2014 that will include two 10th Anniversary shows.

The New York City based band The Hold Steady is the first signing to the newly created label Washington Square that will include future signings in the indie and alt-rock genres. The Washington Square roster will also include the UK rock band Deaf Havana and the New York based indie rockers Born Cages.

Washington Square/Razor & Tie Co-Owner Cliff Chenfeld adds, “We are huge fans of The Hold Steady and could not be more excited that they will help us launch the new label. Washington Square will be a home for groundbreaking artists both established and new, who will make music that is vital and inspiring.”

“We’re excited for this new chapter,” says Hold Steady’s Craig Finn. “We’re really proud of our new record." Adds the band’s Tad Kubler, “This is an exciting time for us. Making the new record has been a journey for the band, and the results exceeded even our own expectations. Can't wait for people to hear it."

Formed in 2004 and originally from Minneapolis, MN, The Hold Steady are a critically acclaimed rock band with a  vibrant mixture of punk ethos and classic rock pedigree punctuated by lyrically dense storytelling and guitar riffs.  The band’s narrative based songs have made them fans around the world.  In May 2005 The Hold Steady were the first rock band to grace the front page of The Village Voice in 15 years. Their 2006 album, Boys and Girls in America was ranked No. 8 on the Rolling Stone Best Albums of 2006 list, and No. 1 by The A.V. Club.  Pitchfork wrote of the album, "[Craig Finn] not only has a commanding, rousing voice but he also says something worth hearing, displaying gifts for both scope and depth that are all too rare in contemporary rock — indie or mainstream." Previously signed to Frenchkiss and Vagrant, The Hold Steady have released five studio albums, with their last release Heaven is Whenever in 2010.  Rolling Stone gave the album 4 out of 5 stars raving, “On Heaven Is Whenever, the Hold Steady don't just show us how much they love classic rock — they make some of their own. It's their most polished record, nearly majestic at points, without scrimping on bloodshot angst or exuberance.”

The Hold Steady have toured the world extensively as both headliners and as a support act with Death Cab For Cutie, The Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows and many more. They recently created an original version of “The Bear And The Maiden Fair” for the hit television series Game Of Thrones.  The band will also release a covers EP entitled RAGS direct to fans this month via Pledge Music to benefit the K + L Guardian Foundation in honor of devoted fan and concert promoter Mike "Jersey Mike" Van Jura, who passed away in late 2012.

The Hold Steady is Craig Finn  (Vocals, Guitars), Tad Kubler  (Guitar), Bobby Drake  (Drums), Galen Polivka  (Bass), and Steve Selvidge (Guitar).

LAIBACH : SPECTRE

New Album Out March 4th, 2014

A Spectre is haunting the World – the Spectre of Laibach ...

Laibach will release a brand new album, SPECTRE, on CD, vinyl and download on  March 4th, 2014.  SPECTRE follows the band’s widely acclaimed conceptual album VOLK (2006) – where Laibach interpreted national anthems of historically imperialistic nations – and the release of the side projects LAIBACHKUNSTDERFUGE (2008) and IRON SKY: The Original Film Soundtrack (2012).

Watch a trailer for the new album here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR-VNeLMfqQ

Laibach has once again ‘re-invented’ itself in a newly born, yet polished and solid, formation. As is now customary, Laibach calls into question all the rigid and cemented interpretations (and prejudices) about itself, its music, intentions, philosophy and ideology. Laibach are masters of escape: true escape artists. And yet, despite everything, SPECTRE resonates as a real and full-blooded Laibachian work and nothing else.

With SPECTRE, Laibach has taken an important and almost dangerous step forward, potentially fatally crossing the Rubicon. On this album, the group – which has never defined itself politically, but has constantly analyzed politics through its work – comes across as politically engaged as never before. SPECTRE literally sounds like a political manifesto in poetic form. Titles and lyrics couldn’t be more direct. With these lyrics and songs, Laibach, who has always given a controversial impression – or an impression of controversy (especially in terms of its political orientation) - is now very clearly taking a position on the political spectrum and possibly irreversibly abolishing its own (to some extent quite comfortable) political ‘freedom’ and neutrality.

The album opens with “The Whistleblowers,” a contagiously optimistic piece of classic “militant & symphonic” Laibach, sounding like the sequel to Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts’s 1914 “Colonel Bogey March”. This rousing whistle along track – “From North and South / We come from East and West / Breathing as one / Living in fame / Or dying in flame”” alludes to the heroism of the new, ‘digital’ Prometheans of freedom - Bradley Manning, Edward Snowden, Julian Assange.

“No History,” knows no mercy, and leaves no doubt: Laibach require uncompromising action, they demand bravery and boldness and seek heroes “who will be the creed of a new political faith.” In one of the verses of this song, listeners can find a mini-‘manifesto’ about the album itself, its sonic expression, and the position of the group in relation to its own history.

It is amongst these rallying calls from the band that there exists a rare Laibach love song: “We Are Millions And Millions Are One”, dealing with love in today’s impossible times.  Our days are dangerously close to the fictional reality of classic anti-utopian novels such as Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We (Мы) a selection that was one of Laibach’s inspirations for this song.

Ending the album is the elegant utopian song “Koran”a track that shows the possibility of a better world – on Earth or in the hereafter. Koran – which literally means ‘recitation’ (also another key Laibachian trait) – also to some extent refers to the series of uprisings, revolutions and wars in the Arab world that have been taking place in the past few years and which refuse to sink. Consequently, the album ends with the (in)complete, open, unfinished sound of a piano key...

SPECTRE’s release will be followed by a European and Asian tour, including dates at KOKO in London as well as the band’s first foray into China.

SPECTRE Tracklisting:

The Whistleblowers
No History
Eat Liver!
Americana
We Are Millions And Millions Are One
Eurovision
Walk With Me
Bossanova
Resistance Is Futile
Koran

Wild Throne – Blood Maker 12″

Bellingham, WA progressive rock/metal trio WILD THRONE (formerly known as Dog Shredder) emerge with Blood Maker, the debut EP under their new moniker.  A mind bending amalgamation of progressive rock, metal, jazzy syncopations and swirling melodies, Blood Maker was recorded this past Spring with legendary producer Ross Robinson (At The Drive In, Glassjaw, The Cure) at his home studio.

Guitarist/vocalist Josh Holland had this to say about the new material:

"Working with Ross Robinson on this new release is a huge step for us growing as a band. We went into the studio hoarding a ton of new material we had written since our last release and laid it all out in the open. He really believed in the music and helped us hone it all in and focus our energies on the best stuff for this record. We are thrilled with how it turned out and very excited to release these new songs with Brutal Panda!"

The band are fresh off a west coast run with Red Fang and Helms Alee, with additional tour dates set to be announced in the coming weeks.
