They've Shot Flanigan - The Outlaw

Limited to 500 total copies, "The Outlaw" is a co-release with Collective Confusion Records and Enjoy The Ride Records.

The ETR Variant is "California Gold and Texas Oil" variant (black center surrounded by translucent gold) Limited to 125 total copies

Since 2002, Indianapolis-based THEY’VE SHOT FLANIGAN have been tirelessly writing, recording and touring, establishing themselves as a strong and consistent presence in the Midwestern rock and roll scene. With a sound that is deeply rooted in classic rock and heavily influenced by contemporary independent and progressive artists, the band makes music that is simultaneously dark and catchy, heavy and melodic, intense and contemplative. “They are adept songwriters,” writes Louise Sinclair of Girl At The Show, “with the kind of mature, put-together sound you’d expect from a major artist.”

THEY’VE SHOT FLANIGAN have released two EPs and two full-length albums, the most recent a 10-song concept album about the life and death of a gunslinger, recorded with engineer Seth Henderson of Always Be Genius studios. The album was released on December 10, 2011.

MUMFORD AND SONS - BABEL

When Mumford & Sons entered the studio to commence work on their second album, Babel, in August of 2011, they never envisioned it would be to follow-up a debut record that had connected with so many music lovers from all different corners of the globe, and all the roads in-between. Their success is even something the four members struggle to trace. "It sort of just happened," Marcus Mumford has often mused to journalists. The earliest memories of the band performing together are within the close confines of a rehearsal room in Putney, and of last minute street-side jamming sessions on the pavement outside Bosun's Locker (a now defunct basement venue on Kings Road in London) ahead of a show. It was a scene already common to the band as musicians falling in and out of bands of each and every genre. Ben Lovett and Marcus were already working on songs together from their school days, but those songs didn't realise their full potential until Winston Marshall (armed with a banjo and dobro), and Ted Dwane (double bass, but with a penchant for being a multi-instrumental marvel) had learned and lived those songs, given them new arrangements, and injected them with a real 'band' dynamic.

DREAM THEATER - SCORE: 20TH ANNIVERSARY WORLD TOUR

Dream Theater is an experience you should undergo when the band plays their compositions live on stage. Especially when there is an entire orchestra behind them. Such a performance is recorded on this 4LP set, as part of the band's 20th Anniversary Tour.

Released in 2006, their live performance of Dream Theater classics is no less than thrilling; the first two LP's contain the band's exquisite renditions of classics like "The Root Of All Evil" or "Another Won". The second half of this 4LP serving consists of the band's performance with The Octavarium Orchestra. The classic "Six Degrees Of Innocence" is spread out over two sides and album closer "Metropolis" finishes the Dream Theater experience in due style.

ILSE DELANGE - AFTER THE HURRICANE & MORE

Country-pop singer Ilse DeLange emerged as one of the most successful Dutch artists of her generation with her chart-topping 1998 debut, 'World Of Hurt.'

Recording several albums in the US (most notably Nashville) proved fruitful; both her debut as well as Clean Up (2003) and The Great Escape (2006) were highly successful in the Lowlands and beyond, earning her several awards and high album- and singles sales.

After The Hurricane & More is the definitive Ilse DeLange best of. A wonderful collection of tracks that present the best that Ilse has released in her impressive career.

MIRIAM MAKEBA - PATA PATA

Miriam Makeba is internationally known for her 1967 hit "Pata Pata". She was the first artist from South Africa to become an international star, recording and touring with the likes of Paul Simon, her former husband Hugh Masekela and Harry Belafonte.  In 1966 she won a Grammy for her performances with the latter.

Makeba was nicknamed Mama Africa and was globally revered for her civil rights activism, fighting tirelessly against apartheid and an adversarial government as from the early stages of her career. Being exiled from her homeland ever since the early Sixties, she only returned in 1990, after the much-publicized liberation (and by request) of Nelson Mandela.

This essential 1967 Makeba record allowed her to conquer the world with her wonderful voice, containing her monster hit "Pata Pata", "Click Song" and more beautiful works.  On 180 gram audiophile vinyl !

JAN AKKERMAN - JAN AKKERMAN

Jan Akkerman's first solo album after his departure from Focus was self-titled for good reason – the musical compromises he apparently had to make in Focus are nonexistent here. This is Akkerman's soul laid bare; beautiful guitar arrangements and impressive soloing are met with an ace backing band, including the powerful Bruno Castelucci on drums (who's also appeared on several albums of German Jazz Funk hero Peter Herbolzheimer) and bassist Cees Van Der Laarse of Brainbox.

This is the first reissue of Jan Akkerman since its original release!  On 180 gram audiophile vinyl !

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 10, 2014

DEAR JERRY: Since this month is the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles first U.S. hit record, their first American tour, and the beginning of the British Invasion, my question is a timely one.

Based on their overall singles success, how do you rank the British groups and duos that we first heard in 1964 or '65?
—Donna Mendes, Queens, N.Y.

DEAR DONNA: Knowing it has been 50 years since I was on the radio playing all of the hits by every one of these groups is a pleasantly strange realization. It was an experience I will treasure forever.

Now for my Top 15 mid-'60s Invaders:

1. Beatles
2. Rolling Stones
3. Dave Clark Five
4. Herman's Hermits
5. Who
6. Hollies
7. Kinks
8. Animals
9. Moody Blues
10. Peter & Gordon
11. Manfred Mann
12. Gerry and the Pacemakers
13. Freddie and the Dreamers
14. Chad & Jeremy
15. Bachelors

DEAR JERRY: In a column last year, you estimated that after the British Invasion, about 25% of America's Top 100 were by artists from overseas, most being from the UK.

While I don't doubt it, I would like to see some specific artists and titles from the week right before "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the Beatles first U.S. hit, and then again for one year later.

That would be the kind of intel that I can really sink my teeth into.
—Norman Bristow, Springfield, Mo.

DEAR NORMAN: Prepare to sink to titanic depths.

"I Want to Hold Your Hand" debuted January 11, 1964 on Cash Box, at No. 80. Strangely, it not only was missing from Billboard's Hot 100 that week, but didn't even appear among their 26 Bubbling Under the Hot 100 Hits (i.e., the Top 126). One week later (January 18) "I Want to Hold Your Hand" debuted on Billboard at No. 45.

Because "I Want to Hold Your Hand" appeared first on Cash Box, we must use their charts to answer your question.

For January 4th, the week before the Beatles debuted nationally, there were only five acts from overseas on the chart, accounting for just 5% of the Top 100. With their rank and song that week, they are:

2. The Singing Nun ("Dominique") (solo female from Belgium)
8. Caravelles ("You Don't Have to Be a Baby to Cry") (female duo from the UK)
61. Los Indios Tabajaras ("Maria Elena") (male instrumental duo from Brazil)
68. Cliff Richard ("It's All in the Game") (solo male from the UK)
73. Frank Ifield ("Please") (solo male from the UK)

The foreigners then consisted of three solo artists and two duos, but not a single vocal group. That was about to change in a gargantuan way.

Also, any mention that week of a pending musical invasion from anywhere would have been downright laughable.

By jumping ahead 52 weeks (January 9, 1965), it's as though we have landed in another world; one where 27% of the Top 100 is by talent from beyond North American shores. All but two are UK artists:

1. Beatles ("I Feel Fine")
4. Searchers ("Love Potion Number Nine")
8. Beatles ("She's a Woman")
9. Julie Rogers ("The Wedding")
10. Dave Clark Five ("Any Way You Want It")
12. Petula Clark ("Downtown")
18. Manfred Mann ("Sha La La")
20. Zombies ("She's Not There")
23. Chad & Jeremy ("Willow Weep for Me")
24. Matt Monro ("Walk Away")
28. Gerry and the Pacemakers ("I'll Be There")
30. Marianne Faithful ("As Tears Go By")
35. Animals ("Boom Boom")
37. Gale Garnett ("Lovin' Place") (New Zealand)
39. Herman's Hermits ("I'm Into Something Good")
40. Waikikis ("Hawaii Tattoo") (Belgium)
46. Rolling Stones ("Time Is on My Side")
50. Hullaballoos ("I'm Gonna Love You Too")
55. Honeycombs ("I Can't Stop")
59. Kinks ("All Day and All of the Night")
61. Kinks ("You Really Got Me")
66. Sandie Shaw ("[Always] Something There to Remind Me")
69. Bachelors ("No Arms Can Ever Hold You")
78. Rolling Stones ("Heart of Stone")
81. Peter & Gordon ("I Go to Pieces")
97. Dusty Springfield ("Live It Up")
100. Dusty Springfield ("Guess Who")

Based on their sound and image, the You Know Who Group ("[Roses Are Red] My Love") and the Beau Brummels ("Laugh, Laugh") were, in 1964, thought by many to be British.

Turns out both were U.S. bands.

IZ ZAT SO? Not until "Meet the Beatles" topped the American LP charts (Feb. 1964) did a rock or R&B group have a No. 1 album

For 16 years, and the more than 100 long-playing albums that topped the charts, the only vocal groups were either folk singers (Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary) or orchestra and chorus groups (Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Mitch Miller and the Gang).

THUMPERS - Galore

“Comprised of long time friends Marcus Pepperell (vocals, guitar, keys) and John Hamson Jr. (drums, vocals, bass), THUMPERS make colourful, exuberant alt-pop that celebrates their innate musical kinship and draws upon their shared childhood memories. The London-based band combine layered androgynous vocals with muscular drums, astral synths and shimmering guitars in a celebration of the breathless sensations of youth and coming of age.

Friends since the age of 11 and playing in bands together since their teens, the two reignited their musical bond again in early 2011. Initially exchanging ideas over long distance correspondence, they used breaks from travel and other projects for intensive, marathon recording sessions. Retreating to the familiar surroundings of their hometown, they worked intuitively and resourcefully in utilizing every means at their disposal (with siblings occasionally joining in on the recording process) with the sole objective of producing great recordings touched by a transcendental jubilance and vague air of the otherworldly.

Live, THUMPERS are augmented by an interchanging cast of friends and musicians in faithfully bringing their immersive dynamics and grand scale sonic vision to the stage.

THUMPERS will release Galore, their debut album, on February 11th in North America via Sub Pop. The record was produced by Pepperell and Hamson along with David Kosten (Bat for Lashes, Everything Everything).”

Floor - Oblation Pre-Order

FLOOR are back! In the wake of their self-titled debut album ‘Floor’ (2002) and the three full-lengths they released as TORCHE between 2005 and 2012, Anthony Vialon (guitars, vocals), Steve Brooks (guitars, vocals) and Henry Wilson (drums) present ‘Oblation’. Adding a dose of doom and a dash of drone, this new opus perfectly encapsulates FLOOR’s trademark desert rock feeling of shimmering heat, the pound and stomp of heavy engines, and a burning taste of diesel in the air. CONVERGE guitarist Kurt Ballou mixed the album at GodCity Studios (TORCHE, KVELERTAK, HIGH ON FIRE) and the mastering was done by Alan Douches (BARONESS, BLACK TUSK, MOTÖRHEAD). Lean back, crank up and sacrifice to the gods of stoner rock with this mighty ‘Oblation.'

Transparent blue vinyl limited to 300 copies.

Audacity - Butter Knife

Audacity’s latest full-length Butter Knife is still, at its core, a garage rock record. Album opener “Couldn’t Hold A Candle” is a perfect introduction to Audacity’s battle plan—a balanced blend of pop sensibility and ribald power. “Hole In The Sky” showcases the band’s gift for the on-the-dime changes, sophisticated melodies, and clever instrumental interplay. “Red Wine” demonstrates a Robert Pollard-like knack for turning an unexpected chord combination into a remarkably punchy chorus. And album closer “Autumn” harkens back to the balladry of power pop kings Big Star. All of which is to say, Audacity are tighter and more clever than your average suburban band, and consequently they’re one of the strongest acts in the Southern Californian garage rock scene.

The second pressing of this LP is limited to 500 copies on coke bottle clear vinyl and comes with a free download code.

Somos - Temple Of Plenty LP Pre-Order

There's no denying the enormity of Somos' 2012 demo—a four-song introduction whose epitomizing moment occurs during the final thirty seconds of the first track when the instruments snuff themselves out and singer Michael Fiorentino's otherwise steely voice rises into a serious, startling roar. By the time the band rebuilds itself for a final chorus, Somos has already established itself as an explosive, fiery monster that leaves its listeners smoldering.

It is no surprise, then, that Somos' debut full-length, Temple of Plenty, is more enormous and more powerful than its predecessor, though they replace the scorching, sharp chords with a smoother, more expansive sound. The guitars on "Familiar Theme", for example, are clean, plucked in spinning patterns and strummed in vibrant, wavering chords—that is, until the chorus, when guitarists Phil Haggerty and Justin Hahn step on the distortion. Even then, their instruments are fully fleshed-out, enormous not because of their crunch but because of their breadth. "Dead Wrong" literally bounces, its elasticity derived from the drumming, which is deceptively complex and solid, but also the rhythm of Fiorentino's lyrics. Here, again, the weight of this third song comes not from overdrive or volume or some superficial production trick, but from its beat and dripping guitars, from Fiorentino's firm singing style—from the songwriting itself.

Maybe the epitomizing moment on Temple of Plenty occurs on "Strangest Example", a song that appears in a different form on the band's demo. It's easy to feel the full one-two punch of the kick drum and the cavernous crack of his snare; trace the guitar as it winds like a vine and flowers at the end of each phrase; and, when the song climbs into its chorus, immerse oneself in the expansive, overlapping layers of melody and momentum. This re-imagining of "Strangest Example"—and, admittedly, Temple of Plenty's entirety—possesses the same power expressed on the band's 2012 demo, but it's derived from depth and finesse and the sort of velvet execution that will make Somos' first full-length one of the most impressive debuts that's likely to be released this year.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SoundStageDirect

The Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob Dylan

Immediately distinguished by the you're-either-with-us-or-against-us messages of the landmark title track, Bob Dylan's The Times They Are A Changin' sounds an unmistakable clarion call on behalf of progress and its unstoppable advancement. One of the Bard's trademark songs, it remains a timeless anthem with a clear sense of common purpose, a musical line in the sand that helped unite various social movements and multiple generations. The reverential 1964 record feeds off the opening tune and its unmistakable sentiments, marching forward to confront racism, poverty, injustice, and upheaval in a stark, immediate manner unlike few albums before or since.

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity’s world-renowned mastering system and pressed on 180 gram LP at RTI, this restored 45RPM analog version delivers the landscape-shifting music in reference-quality sound that practically transports you to Columbia’s Studio A. Reflecting the austerity of the topics and Dylan’s mood, the sonics are direct and unadorned—each word hitting with weight, each phrase lingering until it pulls you under, each storyline echoing as fact. The hollow body of Dylan’s guitar, internal mechanisms of his harmonica, and graininess of his throat come across in full-on detail. Wider grooves mean more information reaches your ears.

Marking a shift from the looseness and comedy that pepper the preceding The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, The Times They Are A-Changin’ skirts any attempt at humor, sarcasm, or goofiness in favor of utmost seriousness and severity. Seemingly anticipating the dark events surrounding President Kennedy’s assassination and the turmoil that followed, Dylan eliminates with conjecture and disguise. Akin to dispatches from the typewriter of literary icons John Steinbeck and William Faulkner, his songs give voices to the voiceless, challenge cultural precepts, upend traditional beliefs with rapier wit and truths, and underline tragedies swept under the rug.

In doing so, Dylan creates stinging protest music that rallies against unchecked authority, discrimination, brutality, and division. A testament to the power of great art, The Times They Are A Changin' is a righteous assault on ignorance and agent for sweeping action, a necessary impetus for transformation and enlightenment. Via bold originals such as the nonfiction “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” assertive “Restless Farewell,” and semi-autobiographical “North Country Blues,” Dylan casts hardships, greed, and victimization in such relatable terms it’s impossible to turn away and ignore their implications.

As correctly relayed by Dylan expert and cultural critic Greil Marcus, “[The record] forever fixed Bob Dylan in the popular imagination: the protest singer, the young man ‘able to see through metal’ (again, from Chronicles), to see through the lie and find the truth, then to hammer the truth into words and send them out with a voice that would never break.”

Santana III by Santana

The final Santana album recorded with the leader’s famed Woodstock lineup, one of the most capable and explosive bands ever assembled, Santana III (commonly referred to as The Third Album) is a beacon of Latin-tinged rock, melodic creativity, and cohesive interplay. The record also marks the debut of young guitar virtuoso Neal Schon, who functions as the ideal foil to Santana, whose playing on this 1971 set rivals that of the finest in his career. If not for arriving after the monumental Abraxas, it is likely Santana III would be mentioned in the same breath as groundbreaking psychedelic classics such as Bitches Brew. It’s that good.

Embracing the concept that all of the members should share their musical ideas, Santana added two crucial components to his band: Schon, discovered at the age of 15 playing in a Palo Alto club, and Thomas “Coke” Escovedo, who during the sessions temporarily replaced ill percussionist Chepito Areas, and whose percussive assistance helped define the album’s feel. With Schon in the fold, Santana strives for the unknown, and yet, manages to stave off the numbing excesses that define much of the period’s output.

From the opening “Batuka,” peppered with Schon’s stirring guitar lines, to the sensitive “Everything Is Coming Our Way,” infused with a mesmerizing Hammond organ underpinning that supports Santana’s vocal pathos, the record teams with inventiveness. Involving albeit accessible concoctions of funk, jazz, rock, blues, and soul run throughout the set. Spanish-styled flavors infuse a majority of the material, ranging from the salsa piano on “Guarjira” to the distinctive “No One to Depend On,” a lively take on the cha-cha-cha.

A globe-spanning armada of percussive instruments—timbales, congas, drums, vibes, tambourines, and more—as well as the existence of a three-person percussion team that fits in harmoniously with Santana, Schon, and company makes Santana III a masterful accomplishment in musical chemistry and the exploration of true world craft.

The Silver Label LP of Santana III breathes with sumptuous warmth and you-are-there realism. The tension of Schon’s guitar lines, the album’s open sound, and extensive use of studio echoes (check the presence of the backward echo on “No One to Depend On”) fill the soundstage, replete with the kind of depth and dynamics one expects from a first-rate audiophile recording.
