Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 24, 2014

DEAR JERRY: About 20 years ago, my aunt played a song for me that had some old-time words of wisdom sayings, but with a slight twist. I do remember that the singer is a woman.

In the one example I recall, they took "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" and made it "two in the bush is better than one in the hand."

It was brilliant, and unlike any song I've ever heard.

Who sings this and what other sayings do they use?
- Ellen Fields, Kodiak, Alaska

DEAR ELLEN:  Perhaps you remember that phrase because it is the only one heard three times in the song, plus the title really is "Two in the Bush Is Better Than One in the Hand."

By Saffire (the Uppity Blues Women) - Gaye Adegbalola, Andra Faye McIntosh, and Ann Rabson — this is the lead track on their 1991 LP, "Hot Flash" (Alligator AL-4796).

Here are Saffire's versions of some of their ancestor's adages:

I placed all my eggs in one basket so many times before
They've been scrambled, boiled, and fried
Even dropped upon the floor
I found out in the long run, it's a poor hole that's got one rat
Life's a hard road to hoe
I'm a harder nut to crack
You ask me for commitment but you don't understand
That two in the bush is better than one in the hand

Gonna have my cake, I'm gonna eat it too
That's the way the cookie crumbles
Don't bite the hand that feeds you
Put your money where your mouth is
Don't let my cat get your tongue
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth
Don't count your chicks before they come
You ask me for commitment but you don't understand
That two in the bush is better than one in the hand

Well, I jumped out of the fire and into the frying pan
Gotta strike while the iron is hot with any bright-eyed, bushy-tail man
If you can't lick 'em, join 'em
Can't fix what is not broken
I advise you to get outta the kitchen now
Now there's fire where there was smoke
Don't put your big foot in your mouth
Don't start what you can't finish
I need a horse of another color
And the sea is full of fishes
If you can't fit don't force it
In my back don't stick a knife
Lay it right on the tip of my tongue
Variety's the spice of life
You ask me for commitment but you don't understand
That two in the bush is better than one in the hand

DEAR JERRY: Every year around Valentine's Day a song flashes through my mind that I have never been able to identify. Unfortunately, no one I have ever asked recalls it.

People always ask if I mean "My Funny Valentine," which of course is not the one I want.

The best clue I have is that it is by a male group, and they begin with their bass man, then switch midway through to the tenors. Similar to "Green Eyes" by the Ravens, it's even from around the same time.
- Arnie Copeland, Mentor, Ohio

DEAR ARNIE: Unless you associated this group with the similarly named snack food, I would not have expected you to remember them.

The tune tugging at your head, and perhaps your heart, is "Paper Valentine," by the Crackerjacks (Kapp 106).

That "Green Eyes" clue was the clincher, and those two have even more in common than you realized.

"Paper Valentine" came out in the summer of 1954, long after Valentine's Day. "Green Eyes" (Jubilee 5203) was issued in the summer of 1955.

The booming bass voice of the Crackerjacks belongs to Thurl Ravenscroft. Hitting the low notes for the Ravens is Jimmy Ricks.

Each basso profondo is prominently featured in the first minute or so before giving way to the other singers, though Ricks is credited by Jubilee whereas Kapp fails to mention Ravenscroft.

As good as both of these tunes are, neither appeared on any of the national charts.

Oh yes, there is one more particular peculiarity that can't be overlooked: the first six letters of Ravenscroft spell Ravens.

IZ ZAT SO? That Thurl Ravenscroft was not credited on "Paper Valentine" is, unfortunately, the rule rather than the exception.

It's not too far-fetched to say that nearly everyone has heard Thurl's voice somewhere, sometime, without knowing his name.

For over 50 years, Ravenscroft was the mysterious voice of Tony the Tiger in TV commercials for Kellog's Frosted Flakes. No doubt Thurl earned more for saying just two words, "They're Grrrrrreat," than for any of his other jobs.

He is heard but not credited on countless hit records by other artists, and in dozens of films, especially ones for the Disney organization.

Among those are a few familiar titles:

Alice in Wonderland
Aristocats
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Cat in the Hat
Dumbo
Halloween Is Grinch Night
Hobbit
How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
Lady and the Tramp
Lilo and Stitch
Man from Button Willow
Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Mary Poppins
One Hundred and One Dalmatians
Paul Bunyan
Peter Pan
Pinocchio
Rose Marie
Sleeping Beauty
Snoopy, Come Home
Sword in the Stone

Unlikely as it seems, if you've never been exposed to any of the above, but have been to one of the Disney theme parks, you have certainly heard Thurl. His voice is used on many of their most popular attractions.

Kiko by Los Lobos

Only a few years removed from breaking through with their cover of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba,” Los Lobos turned even more heads with Kiko, a beautifully textured and flawlessly executed musical statement that reveals the group taking on ambitious musical challenges and surmounting every one. In pairing with producer Mitchell Froom, the band yielded this critically acclaimed 1992 set that remains the apex of its distinguished career.

Mastered from original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s 180 gram LP version of Kiko presents the record in previously unimaginable fidelity. In particular, Froom’s exquisite production can now be experienced in full relief, with the vintage tape-loop keyboards and spare arrangements yielding an ethereal feel, otherworldly ambience, and colorful finish that complement the ace playing. The subtleties of the richly detailed backdrops—splashed with distortion, feedback, random sound effects, sonorous horns, ominous chants, delicately plucked harps—are greatly enhanced, turning the multifaceted Kiko into the aural equivalent of a sensational IMAX presentation.

The material, too, ravishes the senses. In Rolling Stone’s original review of Kiko, David Okamoto remarks “the music sounds more created than contrived, thanks to the compassionate touch of the group's main songwriters, singer-guitarist David Hidalgo and drummer Louis PĂ©rez.” Indeed, the Los Angeles ensemble tackles tough-minded social issues such as alcoholism, suicide, abuse, homelessness, death, and rape without coming across as preachy or melodramatic. The record’s power relates to that possessed by the most timeless albums—the emotional and metaphysical capacities to transcend problems, overcome adversity, and deliver catharsis.

Spanning rollicking blues and dreamy pop balladry to snarling rock and traditional Mexican-inspired waltzes, Kiko seemingly knows no bounds. Lullabies such as “Saint Behind the Glass” claim mellifluous elegance while the cabaret-laced jazz of work like “Kiko and the Lavender Moon” glows with a dark majesty, thanks to both the skilled performance and Froom’s illuminating production. Los Lobos seldom, if ever, drifted so far outside of the roots-rock box as they do on Kiko. And yet, the collective’s binding connection to folklore remains in tact. Native American, Hispanic, and Catholic elements surface in the lyrics and arrangements, the characteristics expressing a multicultural reach that parallels the songs’ multidimensional construction.

And still, it remains impossible to ignore the use of the studio as the record’s secret-weapon instrument. Imaginative tricks such as noise gates, filters, and psychedelic devices help establish a surrealism that never lets up. Neither does Kiko

Tracklist:
1. Dream In Blue
2. Wake Up Dolores
3. Angels with Dirty Faces
4. That Train Don't Stop Here
5. Kiko and the Lavender Moon
6. Saint Behind The Glass
7. Reva's House
8. When the Circus Comes
9. Arizona Skies
10. Short Side of Nothing

i know, this is a vinyl record blog (and this is a CD release), but as a kid, i listened to the hell out of this album

A Scratch In The Sky: Deluxe Expanded Mono Edition - The Cryan' Shames

The Cryan’ Shames’ second album, 1967's 'A Scratch In The Sky,' is an unsung gem of that heady musical era. The set’s distinctive mix of youthful garage-rock energy, sophisticated psychedelic-pop songcraft and forward-thinking studio experimentation reflects the spirit of the times and captures the sound of an ambitious band of young perfectionists (already regional stars in their hometown of Chicago) making a quantum creative leap into exciting new territory.

On 'A Scratch In The Sky,' The Cryan’ Shames trade in the familiar rock ’n’ roll and soul covers that dominated their first album for a set of haunting, emotionally resonant, and experimental original compositions (plus a transcendent reading of the Carole King/Gerry Goffin-penned Drifters classic ‘Up on the Roof’) that are bolstered by adventurous soundscapes.

In addition to the album—presented in its original MONO mix for the first time on CD—two non-LP singles and five single versions are included, and all are sourced from the ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES.

The deluxe, full-colour booklet also includes rare photos and extensive liner notes by music historian Scott Schinder that feature the participation of original band members. Mastered by ALAN BROWNSTEIN from the ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!

Reissue Produced by STEVE STANLEY.

• ESSENTIAL SUNSHINE/PSYCH POP FROM 1967!
• RARE LATE MONO MIX — FIRST TIME EVER ISSUED ON CD!
• SOURCED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!

This CD is released 28th April and will not be shipped prior to this date.

from our friends at Sundazed

Nilsson - Aerial Ballet

This title is now available for pre-order and will ship to you by the street date of March 18, 2014

Aerial Ballet solidified Nilsson’s craft as a singer-songwriter par excellence. His pen is decidedly sharper in songs like “Together,” “One” and “Don’t Leave Me,” which deal with the insecurities and fatalities of romance. Suicide is explored in “I Said Goodbye to Me,” and the subjects of fame (“Mr. Richland’s Favorite Song”) and fatherhood (“Daddy’s Song”) get their drubbing in scat-filled soft-shoe style. This Sundazed edition presents the 1968 mono mix of this treasured work—scarce then, and virtually impossible to locate in the decades since—from the original master reels, with restored artwork. Also included is “Daddy’s Song,” a tune quickly deleted from the original pressings that features a noticeably different vocal arrangement in its monaural form, and the original first-issue single mix of “Everybody’s Talkin’,” among other highlights. A unique version seen only briefly when issued and virtually untouchable in the intervening years, Aerial Ballet in mono, pressed at R.T.I., is now available on 180 gram vinyl.

TRACK LISTING:
Daddy’s Song
Good Old Desk
Don’t Leave Me
Mr. Richland’s Favorite Song
Little Cowboy
Together
Everybody’s Talkin
I Said Goodbye to Me
Little Cowboy
Mr. Tinker
One
The Wailing of the Willow

Nilsson - Pandemonium Shadow Show

This title is now available for pre-order and will ship to you by the street date of March 18, 2014

Nilsson’s first true album, 1967’s Pandemonium Shadow Show, is an astonishing collection that announces the artist’s unique vaudevillian take on 1960s pop music—a style that brought him to the attention of the Beatles by way of their press agent Derek Taylor. Produced by Rick Jarrard (Jefferson Airplane, JosĂ© Feliciano) and primarily arranged by George Tipton, the set strikes a balance between Harry’s breathtaking originals (the autobiographical “1941,” the melancholy “Without Her” and the playful “Ten Little Indians”) and a tasteful array of covers (the Beatles’ “You Can’t Do That” and “She’s Leaving Home,” as well as Phil Spector’s gargantuan “River Deep‑Mountain High”), all the while showcasing the vocal prowess of the True One. Plus, the usual benefits of a vintage mono mix are here—a louder rhythm section, more present bass, and an overall sense of ensemble that stereo of the era could rarely capture. A stunning work, pressed at R.T.I., now available from Sundazed in a 180 gram edition with restored artwork.

TRACK LISTING:
Ten Little Indians
1941
Cuddly Toy
She Sang Humns Out Of Tune
You Can't Do That
Sleep Late, My Lady Friend
She's Leaving Home
There Will Never Be
Without Her

The Left Banke - Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina LP

Long-awaited reissue of 1967 debut by baroque rock legends!

The work of the Left Banke has long been an elusive holy grail for vintage pop fanatics. The legendary “baroque rock” combo’s work ranks with the greatest American music of the 1960s, and remains beloved by discerning pop connoisseurs around the world. Out of print for decades and despite its longstanding unavailability, the Left Banke’s music has attained an ever-increasing level of prestige over the years, and continues to exercise a powerful mystique amongst the group’s legion of admirers. The Left Banke’s 1967 debut album Walk Away RenĂ©e/Pretty Ballerina is widely regarded as one of the greatest debut albums of the ’60s, thanks to frontman Steve Martin’s evocative lead vocals, the haunting harmonies of band members Tom Finn and George Cameron, the ambitious songwriting of keyboardist Michael Brown, and exquisite, classically-influenced arrangements that were unlike anything else in popular music at the time. “Walk Away RenĂ©e,” released the previous year as the band’s first single, remains one of the era’s most recognizable (and most-covered) standards. In addition to “Walk Away RenĂ©e” and its followup hit “Pretty Ballerina,” the album also features such memorable numbers as “She May Call You Up Tonight,” “Barterers and Their Wives” and “Shadows Breaking Over My Head.” The long-awaited reissue of this classic debut on CD and 180 gram vinyl LP has been sourced from the original stereo master tapes and includes the album’s original track listing.

Bob Mould - Workbook 25

Available Tomorrow!

25th Anniversary 2-CD/2-LP editions!

Alt-rock superstars HĂĽsker DĂĽ called it a day on January 28, 1988, but the band’s Bob Mould would reappear on May 2, 1989 with his first solo album—the incredibly impassioned and personal Workbook.

In addition to writing and producing the entire album, Mould sang all the vocals and played many of the instruments, sharing duties with The Golden Palominos’ Anton Fier on drums, Pere Ubu’s Tony Maimone (bass) and cellist Jane Scarpantoni from Tiny Lights. While always recognized as an astonishing guitarist, Mould’s fretwork on Workbook traveled to levels yet unheard or imagined.

The album has since taken on iconic status, and Omnivore is proud to present the 25th Anniversary edition; Workbook 25

In addition to the original album’s 11 tracks, the first disc of this 2-CD collection adds “All Those People Know,” originally issued as the B-side of the single “See A Little Light.” The second disc is Bob’s complete 1989 performance at Chicago’s Cabaret Metro. 13 of the 17 tracks are previously unissued and the show contains music from the then, two-week old, Workbook, HĂĽsker DĂĽ favorites and a cover of Richard & Linda Thompson’s classic “Shoot Out The Lights.”

The album will be available on vinyl for the first time since its original release and will be pressed on 2 LPs for sonic superiority. The vinyl edition will also include the B-side, bonus track, “All Those People Know.”

As innovative as HĂĽsker DĂĽ was, fans had to wonder if Bob Mould could take them on another journey as rewarding. Workbook not only proved he could, but did.

LP Track List:
   Side 1:
 1. SUNSPOTS
 2. WISHING WELL
 3. HEARTBREAK A STRANGER

   Side 2:

Les Claypool's Duo De Twang - Four Foot Shack

How "deconstructed" can a group get? How about just one vocal, one bass, one guitar, and a basic beat supplied by stomping on a mini-tambourine-doohickey? That's exactly what everyone's favorite storyteller/narrator, Les Claypool, is incorporating in his new band, Duo de Twang. While Les is still pulling double duty with the Primus lads, he has also found the time to unite with his old buddy, Bryan Kehoe, who fans will recognize from several past Claypool projects, and also as one of the main actors from Les' hilarious jam band mockumentary, 'Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo.' But unlike Primus, DDT focuses more on the Americana/rootsy side of things - as heard throughout the band's debut recording Four Foot Shack

PILGRIM: Rhode Island Doom Bringers To Release Sophomore Full-Length

Wizards and warriors, rejoice, for the chosen one has returned! The Misery Wizard lives!

Since the early 2012 unveiling of their debut sonic behemoth "MISERY WIZARD", fans and critics alike have patiently yet anxiously awaited the second chapter in the ongoing legacy of the almighty PILGRIM, a three-piece doom metal band from Rhode Island, USA.

Their first release shook the doom metal underground to its core, making a loud, in your face effort to bring doom metal back to its most minimalist and archaic roots, restoring it to its former glory. Their critical success, paired with their controversial interviews and emotionally draining live performances have lead PILGRIM to excellence, traversing the globe performing sold-out shows in multiple countries and playing festivals alongside some of the biggest names in their genre. Two years later, the fabled outfit has returned with a brand new record, the highly anticipated next installment of their aural adventure "PILGRIM II: VOID WORSHIP."

PILGRIM returns more powerful than ever, wielding eight new epic tracks laden with tales of sword and sorcery, death, doom and destruction. Recorded at Moonlight Mile Recording by audio mastermind Mike Moebius, II: VOID WORSHIP delivers an absolutely unrivaled quality of tone and heaviness that many critics felt their original effort MISERY WIZARD had lacked. The band takes a new approach to their song writing, replacing meditated, repetitive hypnosis-inducing dirges with more calculated and demented powerhouse riffs. They build, shape, and climb into frenzied climaxes and fade into sweet sonic releases, molding perfectly crafted rock songs into twisting spires of evil doom metal masterpieces. It is obvious that PILGRIM has matured, both musically and as individuals, in their past two years of global conquest.

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

THE AFGHAN WHIGS - BLACK LOVE

Where some artists write from the head and others from the heart, Whigs' songwriter/front man Greg Dulli writes from the groin. His lyrics are filled with dark images of romantic obsession. Perhaps no other band can play with such restraint, letting musical tension build until it can do nothing other than explode. Dulli in his finest voice can move from desperate screams to a quiet sinister crooning at the turn of a chord.

Black Love was released in 1996 and further built on their trademark mix of Grunge, Indie Rock, Soul and Blues. The band lay out dark, raw Grungy grooves for Dulli to sing his twisted lyrics to; a perfect match. Now available on vinyl for the first time since 1996!

HOWLIN' WOLF - MEMPHIS DAYS VOL.2

Feast your ears with raw and dirty Blues from one of the most influential Blues musicians that ever walked the planet.

The second volume in the Memphis Days series collects all the known Memphis recordings that were either issued or originally offered to Chess Records. As such, it stands as a marvelous collection of Wolf's early 78s for that label. But what truly puts it over the top is the added bonus of a newly discovered acetate featuring several unissued versions of "How Many More Years" and "Baby Ride With Me (Riding in the Moonlight)". The great sound and the performances make it a must-have.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Insert
  • Available on vinyl for the first time!

SICK OF IT ALL- SCRATCH THE SURFACE

Their first major label release Scratch The Surface (1994) brought mainstream attention toward New York's hardest working Hardcore bands Sick Of It All. Established as THE seminal Hardcore band combining furious Punk Rock with enticing live shows, they conquered stages all over the world, quickly becoming the headlining attraction on many Rock festivals and hardcore shows.

Guitarist Pete Koller's furious riffing and energetic stage antics, Lou Koller's distinctive voice and charisma, drummer Armand Majidi and bassist Craig Setari turned New York Hardcore into the undisputed flag bearer of the worldwide Hardcore movement.

Promoted with videos for "Step Down" and "Scratch The Surface",  the album made a quick impact and has since become a staple in every hardcore kid's album collection. To celebrate this vinyl reissue, we're numbering the first 1500 copies and press 'em on fiery yellow/red vinyl! To top things off, we've included the bonus track "Straight Ahead."
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl

  • Includes bonus track "Straight Ahead"
  • First pressing of 1500 numbered copies on yellow/red marbled vinyl

YELLO - ONE SECOND

Dieter Meier, heir turned conceptual artist, joined Boris Blank to form the electronic synth group Yello in the late '70s. Combining samples and beats with Meier's deep and distinctive voice, Yello became experts in combining the suave with the eclectic.

One Second was their 5th album, released in 1987. Highlight on the album are the B-side's opener "The Rhythm Divine" which features Shirley Bassey on vocals, and "Goldrush" which had a marvelous video that got heavy rotation on the music television networks.

This is the first reissue of One Second since its original release. To celebrate its rerelease, we've remastered the album to good effect and included the bonus track "L'HĂ´tel."
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Exclusively remastered
