Raveonettes - Pretty In Black

The second full-length album of Danish Fifties/Psych Pop duo The Raveonettes was released in 2005. On Pretty In Black, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo abandoned the strict recording rules the band laid upon themselves on their preceding efforts. Instead, the group further expand on their signature sound of Fifties inspired Rockabilly Noise Pop with the eerie feel of a thriller movie soundtrack. Special appearances on this album are made by Maureen Tucker of Velvet Underground on drums, Martin Rev on drum machine and Ronnie Spector, also known as Veronica Bennett of the fabulous Ronettes on backup vocals.

Limited to 500 total copies, "The Outlaw" is a co-release with Collective Confusion Records and Enjoy The Ride Records.

The ETR Variant is "California Gold and Texas Oil" variant (black center surrounded by translucent gold) Limited to 125 total copies

Since 2002, Indianapolis-based THEY’VE SHOT FLANIGAN have been tirelessly writing, recording and touring, establishing themselves as a strong and consistent presence in the Midwestern rock and roll scene. With a sound that is deeply rooted in classic rock and heavily influenced by contemporary independent and progressive artists, the band makes music that is simultaneously dark and catchy, heavy and melodic, intense and contemplative. “They are adept songwriters,” writes Louise Sinclair of Girl At The Show, “with the kind of mature, put-together sound you’d expect from a major artist.”

THEY’VE SHOT FLANIGAN have released two EPs and two full-length albums, the most recent a 10-song concept album about the life and death of a gunslinger, recorded with engineer Seth Henderson of Always Be Genius studios. The album was released on December 10, 2011.

John Coltrane: The Complete Sun Ship Session (3 180 Gram LPs)

Sun Ship, recorded August 26, 1965, captures one of the last sessions by the Classic John Coltrane Quartet (Coltrane, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones). It comes at the culmination of a year in which Coltrane arguably reached his creative peak, a year rich in such masterworks. The Sun Ship album, though, was not issued until 1971, one of several Coltrane albums issued by Impulse Records after his death. And Sun Ship was, like many jazz albums, the product of editing between takes, a process overseen by John's widow Alice.

This Complete Sun Ship Session edition is much more: sourced from newly discovered original reels, the set includes the album's five original compositions, unedited, in sequence of recording, with all of the takes as they evolved, as well as the surrounding conversations. More than just a sampling of a few alternate takes, the Complete Session offers a rare opportunity to eavesdrop on an iconic master at work. - David Wild, liner notes

John Coltrane's "Sun Ship" session was recorded at the RCA Recording studio on 24th Street by engineer Bob Simpson who also did superb work with Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, Albert Ayler and others. The original three-track masters with the tenor sax on one track, the piano and bass on another and the drums on the third track were recently discovered, enabling the complete session to be released for the first time. Kevin Reeves recently remixed the entire session with great sonic results, improving greatly on the original LP mix. Mosaic has remastered them and pressed them on 180-gram vinyl at the renowned Record Technology Inc. plant in Camarillo, California.

Elder Brother - Heavy Head

Elder Brother is the indie rock side-project of Kevin Geyer (The Story So Far) and Dan Rose (Daybreaker) with in-studio assistance from Matthew and Charles Vincent (The American Scene). Drifting far from the aggressive and simple pop-punk that The Story So Far has come to perfect, the duo’s debut LP Heavy Head showcases the songwriting prowess of Geyer and Rose in a more relaxed environment. The record is unexpected and mostly brilliant, with a few standout tracks that almost instantly require repeat plays. written by John Bazley

Andre Georget - La France Interdite

Obscure mondo-documentary released in grindhouse theaters in 1983 and well-known by sleazy diggers of the VHS era, La France Interdite, or French Prohibition, unleashes a dark yet strangely arousing side of France, a bizarre and mysterious world where sexual perversion, marginality, and sometimes violence mingle without inhibitions nor taboos. This rare exploitation movie by Gilles Delannoy, Jean-Pierre Garnier and Jean-Pierre Imbrohoris covers it all: peep shows behind the scenes, porn movie auditions, black masses, nights with transvestites in the Bois de Boulogne, S&M clubs, and life in a day of an eagle trainer, among other oddities. A unique journey wrapped in the decadence and vice of the 80s.

A big part of the decadent charm of La France Interdite comes from the playful soundtrack composed by Andre Georget (arranger/producer) for French music legends such as Alain Bashung and Francoise Hardy. Straight from the golden age of synthesizers, the soundtrack is reminiscent of the best of Giorgio Moroder, Harold Faltermeyer, or even Art of Noise in some parts. “Collection Voitures” is an ambient gem, while “Intro Peep Show” goes full Scarface and “Muscles” gives up the sticky funk in a major way. A delightful mix of musical mastery and nostalgia kitsch.

•Limited edition of 300!
•First ever release of this obscure soundtrack!
•Includes two poster inserts and bonus 7".

Psyche - Re-Membering Dwyane

At the end of 1981, brothers Darrin and Stephen Huss and schoolmate Dwayne Goettel performed for the first time as Psyche in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Their live show was a combination of horror and electronics that was completely unprecedented in Western Canada. Although Goettel and the Huss brothers parted ways before Psyche was to release any material, the masters containing Dwayne Goettel’s performances were preserved in the band’s vaults.

Now, 19 years after Goettel’s untimely passing in 1995, Dark Entries records presents “Re-Membering Dwayne”, the original Psyche-Dwayne Goettel sessions. All tracks were recorded and mixed on 4-track during a single day in March of 1983. Psyche’s early material is visceral and abrasive, a far cry from the sleek, dark synthpop they’d later become known for. Like the body horror films of fellow Canadian David Cronenberg, Psyche disquietingly conflate the organic and the mechanical, calling into question the limits of the human form. Dwayne, who would join Skinny Puppy a few years later, contributes heavily to this more aggressive, disturbing sound.

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP includes a 12-page booklet with excerpts from Darrin Huss’ diary, unpublished photos of Psyche with Dwayne, and an essay by Darrin reflecting on Psyche’s past and the Goettel legacy as well as lyrics. This collection is a glimpse at the early Canadian industrial scene and the roots of Skinny Puppy. Go take a walk in the past with an ear for the future; you just might learn something.

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

David Bowie - Reality

Reality, the 26th album of David Bowie (2003) followed up on the heavily successful formula of Heathen, combining influences of Bowie's Seventies' past (say, from Heroes to Scary Monsters) with a contemporary new millennium vibe. David produced this album together with Tony Visconti, the dream team that also made Heathen a true work of art, resulting in yet another surefire production and memorable songs. The album made it to the top 30 of the Billboard 200, and set the course for great Bowie albums to follow.

Released in a time when vinyl popularity was at an all-time low, Reality never saw its proper official vinyl release. Until now. To celebrate this unique occasion, we're pressing 2 different coloured issues of 2500 copies each, all individually numbered. One run will be issued on transparent green vinyl, the other on orange vinyl. Of course, the album will also be readily available in regular black vinyl. Each unit contains a 12-page booklet with lyrics and artwork.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Includes a 12-page booklet
  • Available on vinyl for the first time!
  • First pressing available in 2 colours: 2.500 numbered copies on transparent green vinyl
  • 2.500 numbered copies on orange vinyl
  • Also available on black vinyl

Original Soundtrack - Machete Kills

"Machete don't fail". The U.S. government recruits Machete to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer who looks to launch a weapon into space and bomb the USA. Machete needs to save his new country in a dangerous journey full of betrayals and plot twists. And he's certainly not joking around doing so. Or is he?

This hilarious action thriller starring Danny Trejo as the hero, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen as the US president (can you imagine?!), Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas and Cuba Gooding Junior is perhaps the funniest thing you'll ever see on the big screen. In short: funny one-liners, fast paced action, in-your-face violence and an array of über sexy ladies make this quintessential Robert Rodriguez film one never to forget.

The soundtrack rocks and thunders, like the film. Latin flavoured Desert Rock and cynical Mariachi meets Classical scores – better get that bottle of tequila and victory cigar ready and kickstart the subwoofer to annoy your neighbours! First pressing limitedly available on blood red vinyl.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Insert
  • 1000 numbered copies on bloody red vinyl!

Erroll Garner - Concert By The Sea

Recorded in a converted church in a military base near Carmel, California in 1955, Concert By The Sea is Erroll Garner's widely acclaimed pièce de résistance. A mixture of originals, show biz, and pop standards are delivered with his unique enthusiasm and spontaneity. The recording also features Eddie Calhoun on bass and Denzil Best on drums, and although it was produced using relatively primitive sound equipment, Garner's inventiveness and musical talent have ensured the album has become one of his most notable.

The release came about because Garner's personal manager, Martha Glaser, spotted backstage that a tape recorder was running. The recording was being made "by a jazz fan and scholar named Will Thornbury, strictly for the enjoyment of himself and his fellow servicemen". Glaser took the tape, put it into album form and then played it for the head of Columbia Records' jazz division, George Avakian, who decided to release it. Luckily for masses of Jazz fans, he did! 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Phillip Glass - Solo Piano

With Solo Piano, Glass presents himself "unplugged" - no electronic keyboards or synthesizers, and no overdubs, either - just solo piano. "Metamorphosis" was written in 1988 and takes its name from a play based on Kafka's short story. Its second track, "Metamorphosis Two", formed the basis of one of the main musical themes in the film "The Hours". It is also the song that the American rock band Pearl Jam uses as their introduction music to concerts.

"Mad Rush" was written for the occasion of the Dalai Lama's first visit in New York City. "Wichita Vortex Sutra" is the result of a chance meeting between two long-time friends, Glass and poet Allen Ginsberg, in a  bookstore in the East Village. 'We decided on the spot to do something together, reached for one of Allen's books, and chose the poem "Wichita Vortex Sutra"'. 180 gram audiophile vinyl Deluxe PVC outer sleeve

Herbie Hancock - Blow-Up (Original Soundtrack)

Blow-Up is a soundtrack album by Herbie Hancock featuring music composed for Michelangelo Antonioni's cult film Blow-Up, released in 1966. Musically the songs evoke the ambience of swinging Sixties' London with grooves that create effective bluesy Jazz moods on the slow pieces, and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks.

The album features performances by Hancock on keys, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Newman on trumpet, Phil Woods and Joe Henderson on sax, Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Rumours go that either the fabled Jimmy Smith or Paul Griffin played the Hammond organ on this record.

Rock fans remember the film and the soundtrack for the inclusion of a rare Yardbirds number, "Stroll On" (actually, a Hard Rock adaptation of Tiny Bradshaw's Jump Blues "The Train Kept A-Rollin'" from 1951), one of only three songs they recorded with both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page on guitars. The bassline to "Bring Down The Birds" was sampled by Deee-Lite for their 1990 hit single "Groove Is In The Heart" featuring Bootsy Collins. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Gram Parsons - Sleepless Nights

Originally released in 1976, Sleepless Nights is a posthumous compilation album by Gram Parsons (who died in 1973 at the age of 26). Most of the tracks were recorded by the Flying Burrito Bros. in early 1970, just before Parsons left the group. The LP does not include any original Parsons/Burrito tunes as the majority of the material consists of vintage country songs - with the exception of the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women".

The other three tracks were recorded during the sessions in '73 for Parsons' second solo effort Grievous Angel. Emmylou Harris – who had worked with 'the father of country-rock' since his first solo album and tour – is featured on these songs, being "Sleepless Nights", "The Angels Rejoiced In Heaven Last Night" and "Brand New Heartache". 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Hank Williams - 40 Greatest Hits

Legendary Country singer Hank Williams (1923 – 1953) lived a short and troubled life. But despite his short career, he scored many number 1 hits in the USA. Williams's vocals, steeped in emotion, have influenced generations of artists. The songs he wrote and recorded have been covered by numerous musicians, and have been hits in various genres including Pop, Gospel and Blues.

The 2LP includes such number 1 hits as "Lovesick Blues", "Jambalaya (On The Bayou)", "Kaw-liga" and "Your Cheatin' Heart". This anthology is the perfect starting point for newcomers to Hanks Williams' recorded legacy.  180 gram audiophile vinyl Gatefold sleeve

Kishi Bashi "Lighght" is now available!

Yes indeed, the new Kishi Bashi album is now available! The album entitled Lighght (pronounced "Light") continues and expands the sound of his critically acclaimed debut, 151a - which earned Kishi Bashi the title of "Best New Artist" by NPR.

Though violin remains his primary instrument and songwriting muse, Kishi Bashi has expanded his palette to include more diverse and nuanced instrumentation. Bright and soaring avant-pop songs are prevalent, as are Eastern-tinged arrangements, gentle ballads, Philip Glass inspired improvisations, and more than a few moments that flirt with 70s prog (in the tradition of ELO or Yes).

The album is available on limited edition 'Gold Splatter' vinyl (w/ bonus 7"), Yellow Vinyl, CD, and Digital. Additionally there is an ultra limited VIP edition of just 500 hand-numbered copies on "Golden Halo" vinyl.

Record Store Day Announce Full List of Releases for 2014

There are way to many to list here, but lots of folks will be pleased with the impressive list.  To see the entire list, go to the Record Store Day site HERE

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 17, 2014

DEAR JERRY: One of my jobs in the 1960s required frequent drives between St. Louis and Chicago.

Cars had no tape players then, so I always listened the radio.

One morning, while leaving Missouri, a song about "My Home Town of St. Louis" played. It was by a female whose name I can't recall.

About five hours later, while nearing Chicago, I heard the very same song, with the same singer, but now it was "My Home Town of Chicago."

It was so surreal that I almost drove off the road.

Never again did I hear either song.

What happened to me that day?
—Cliff Johansen, Fraser, Mich.

DEAR CLIFF: Sounds like you narrowly escaped being dematerialized and beamed directly to the mother ship.

Your harrowing day began with you listening to WIL as they played "St. Louis, My Home Town," by Terry Lee Jenkins, and ended on WJJD with the similar sounding "Chicago, My Home Town," also by Terry Lee Jenkins.

I know the position of your radio dial because every version of "(Insert city), My Home Town" was produced by Production Advertising Merchandising Service (PAMS), of Dallas, for a specific station. PAMS specialty was singing station identifications, or radio jingles. As such, only one station in each market could, or would, play their custom record.

Each "My Home Town" song included the broadcaster's unique call letters, their frequency, and as many slogans or catchwords as they could squeeze into about 90 seconds.

Although Euel Box's "My Home Town" generic instrumental track was used for the record, very few of the lyrics are the same. Most were written by folks either working for or associated with the radio stations. On the reverse side of each 45 is that same instrumental, sans vocal, credited to Euel Box with studio musicians.

Terry Lee Jenkins is usually how the vocalist is shown, but she may also be shown as Terry Lea, or Terry and the (fill in whatever the local station wants to call the band).

For example, "Detroit, My Home Town," made for WJBK, 1500 on the AM dial, liked to be known as "Radio 15." On their copy, the artist credit reads "Terry and the Fifteeners."

In 1961 and '62, over 100 different localized recordings were made of "My Home Town," including versions for some Canadian and European home towns.

Most can be found in the $10 to $30 range, but expect the price to at least double for ones with custom picture sleeves.

Here is a list-in-progress of the versions I have personally confirmed. Please let us know if you find others:

DEAR JERRY: On the 50th Anniversary CBS-TV show, "The Beatles: The Night That Changed America - A Grammy Salute," someone mentioned that Paul McCartney, in addition to everything else, was among the top songwriters.

Did they mean for America or Great Britain?
—Dee Gillcrest, Gary, Ind.

DEAR DEE: I can't say what they meant, but I'll tell you what I would have said about the song writing aspect of Paul McCartney.

Not merely "among" the most successful at his craft, he is clearly the No. 1 songwriter of the 20th century, which, when it comes to record sales, pretty much means forever.

Not to be overlooked are the many songs where Paul shares writing credit with someone else. The most frequently credited co-writer is John Lennon, regardless of whether one or both actually wrote the song.

As a result of that lucrative partnership, Lennon is second on the list of most successful songwriters.

IZ ZAT SO? Just as in the glory days of Tin Pan Alley, most of the top writers in the 1950s and '60s were teams, and nearly all were men.

In no particular order, some of the more familiar conglomerations that rank below Lennon-McCartney are:

Hal David-Burt Bacharach; Gerry Goffin-Carole King; Brian Holland-Lamont Dozier-Eddie Holland; Kenny Gamble-Leon Huff; Barry Gibb-Robin Gibb; Elton John-Bernie Taupin; Barry Mann-Cynthia Weil; Ellie Greenwich-Jeff Barry; Brian Wilson-Mike Love; Neil Sedaka-Howard Greenfield; Mick Jagger-Keith Richard; Paul Simon-Art Garfunkel; Jerry Leiber-Mike Stoller; Doc Pomus-Mort Shuman; Roy Orbison-Joe Melson; Antoine "Fats" Domino-Dave Bartholomew; Kal Mann-Dave Appell; and Tommy Boyce-Bobby Hart.

Led Zeppelin III (Deluxe Edition) (Pre-Order) (On Sale) by Led Zeppelin

On their first two albums, Led Zeppelin unleashed a relentless barrage of heavy blues and rockabilly riffs, but Led Zeppelin III provided the band with the necessary room to grow musically. While there are still a handful of metallic rockers, III is built on a folky, acoustic foundation that gives the music extra depth. And even the rockers aren't as straightforward as before: the galloping "Immigrant Song" is powered by Robert Plant's banshee wail, "Celebration Day" turns blues-rock inside out with a warped slide guitar riff, and "Out on the Tiles" lumbers along with a tricky, multi-part riff. Nevertheless, the heart of the album lies on the second side, when the band delve deeply into English folk. "Gallows Pole" updates a traditional tune with a menacing flair, and "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" is an infectious acoustic romp, while "That's the Way" and "Tangerine" are shimmering songs with graceful country flourishes. The band hasn't left the blues behind, but the twisted bottleneck blues of "Hats off to (Roy) Harper" actually outstrips the epic "Since I've Been Loving You," which is the only time Zeppelin sound a bit set in their ways.  - Stephen Thomas Erlewine (All Music Guide)

Live At The Cellar Door by Neil Young

Neil Young will release Live At The Cellar Door, the latest in his Archives Performance Series, on Reprise Records. The album collects recordings made during Young's intimate six-show solo stand at The Cellar Door in Washington D.C. between November 30th and December 2nd, 1970, a few months after Reprise released his classic third solo album After The Gold Rush in August.

The album, which features Young performing on acoustic guitar and piano, includes tracks that are interesting for several reasons, such as stunning live versions of songs that appeared on After The Gold Rush ("Tell Me Why," "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," "Birds," "Don't Let It Bring You Down" and the title track) and solo performances of the Buffalo Springfield songs "Expecting To Fly" (from their 1967 second album Buffalo Springfield Again), "I Am A Child" (from their third and final album Last Time Around and Young's 1977 Decade compilation), and "Flying On The Ground Is Wrong," from their 1966 self-titled debut.

In addition, Live At The Cellar Door features early, raw performances of songs that wouldn't appear until subsequent Young albums, including the rarity "Bad Fog Of Loneliness" (which appears on Live At Massey Hall '71 - released in 2007-but was previously unreleased until the studio band version was included on Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972), "Old Man" (released two years later on 1972's Harvest album), a rare solo performance of "Cinnamon Girl" on piano (the full band version appears on Young's 1969 second solo album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere), and "Down By The River," also from Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.

Live At The Cellar Door was recorded by Henry Lewy and produced by Young.
