Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SpaceLab9

SPACELAB9 and Madison Gate Records announce the release of “BREAKING BAD (Original Score From The Television Series)” Double LP

SPACELAB9, in partnership with Madison Gate Records, is thrilled to announce the details of the release of “BREAKING BAD (Original Score From The Television Series),” a double LP that will hit the streets on April 29, 2014. Previously released as a limited double picture disc by SPACELAB9 this past November, the score album to the groundbreaking series BREAKING BAD will now be released as a deluxe double LP with a full-color gatefold jacket filled with images from the show as well as extensive liner notes from composer Dave Porter and show creator and executive producer Vince Gilligan. Rounding out the deluxe packaging are full-color inner sleeves, limited colored vinyl and a full-color 18 x 24 poster.

“I’m very pleased to have Volume One of my original score to Breaking Bad made available in a tangible way with this release on vinyl. Thanks to Madison Gate Records and SpaceLab9. I’m excited to share this release with fans of the show and record enthusiasts looking for a better listening experience than an mp3 could ever offer… a sound much closer to the version that came out of my studio” says composer Dave Porter.

Wave Of Mutilation: Best Of Pixies by Pixies

Finally available on vinyl!

During their six years together, the Pixies released five albums on 4AD- Come on Pilgrim(1987); Surfer Rosa(1988); Doolittle(1989); Bossanova(1990) and Trompe Le Monde(1991). Experiencing particular success in the UK and Europe, the Pixies played sold-out festivals and received a multitude of fan, peer and critical acclaim. The band's influence was far-reaching; U2's Bono referred to the Pixies as "one of America's greatest bands ever”; David Bowie called their work "just about the most compelling music of the entire 80s," and Kurt Cobain, who identified Surfer Rosa as his favorite album of that entire decade, confessed, when writing ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, that, "Basically, I was ripping off The Pixies."

The new 23-track Wave Of Mutilation: Best Of Pixiesruns (almost) chronologically and expands on the previous compilation, Death To The Pixies. The recordings remain fresh and vibrant - a splendid introduction for old fans and new converts alike - inevitably there are half a dozen tracks from Doolittle, the record that NME proclaimed the "second best album ever", but there's also a couple of B-sides, the live favourite ‘Into The White’ and, to end the sonic assault on a poignant note, the band's cover of Neil oung's ‘Winterlong’.

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

BLUE ÖYSTER CULT - AGENTS OF FORTUNE

'I've got a fever, and the only medicine is MORE COWBELL…' Decades before Christopher Walken and Will Ferrell's hilarious ode to "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" on Saturday Night Live, Agents Of Fortune already obtained classic Rock status. The hit song is just one of the wonderful tunes on Blue Öyster Cult's fifth album from 1976.

The band called in the help of Patti Smith on "The Revenge Of Vera Gemini", and delivered a high charting album (#29 on the Billboard 200 and "The Reaper" made it to the twelfth spot on the singles Charts). This record rocks 'n thunders, with a sensual boogie permeating these 10 great tracks.

LEONARD COHEN - LIVE IN LONDON

After a sabbatical period, resting in a Buddhist monastery, Leonard Cohen was prompted to tour again as in his absence his former manager embezzled his savings. If one expected Cohen not to amaze crowds regardless of the reason he was on stage, or his absence from the stage for almost 15 years, one couldn't be more wrong.

Live In London (2009) contains some of the maestro's best work, 26 songs in all. Recorded at London's O2 Arena on July 17, 2008, Cohen mesmerized the 20.000 heads in the audience with big, yet subtle renditions of classics like "Who by Fire", "Suzanne", "The Future" and "Democracy". Cohen sounds genuinely moved by the affectionate reception he receives from his audience, and he seems determined to give them a show to match their loyalty, and with his band (who he frequently lauds during the performance) he truly gives all.

KANSAS - POINT OF KNOW RETURN

Back in 1977, the LP Point Of Know Return marked the commercial peak of Kansas. The Progressive Rock band had experienced tremendous success with their previous release (1976's Leftoverture) and were no longer starving for a hit, yet the sessions for their fifth album were tense. Steve Walsh briefly left the group in the middle of these sessions. Nevertheless, the LP turned out an even bigger success for the band than its predecessor. It would be their highest charting record and with four million copies sold, it was certified Quadruple Platinum by the RIAA.

The tour to support the album brought them to huge venues such as New York's Madison Square Garden and the LA Forum, with the tour book including an essay written by Rolling Stone contributor Cameron Crowe. The band became a staple on FM radio at this point, and during this period was one of the most popular rock acts in the country. "Dust In The Wind" became the hit single off of the album.

ROGER MCGUINN - CARDIFF ROSE

For Cardiff Rose (1976), the former leader and 12-string jangle-meister of the Byrds collaborated with Mick Ronson, guitarist for David Bowie's Spiders From Mars. The two toured as part of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue, after which Ronson went into the studio with McGuinn to produce his next solo album.

This is easily one of McGuinn's finest solo efforts; recorded with fellow Rolling Thunder veterans Rob Stoner, Howie Wyeth and David Mansfield, the band sounds tight and enthusiastic from front to back. McGuinn wrote a handful of strong originals, including "Partners in Crime", the charging rockers "Rock and Roll Time" and "Take Me Away," and the beautifully atmospheric "Jolly Roger," while he was also lucky enough to receive fine contributions from Bob Dylan ("Up to Me") and Joni Mitchell ("Dreamland").

FINLEY QUAYE - MAVERICK A STRIKE

Originally released in 1997 during the heyday of the alternative UK Electro scene, Finley Quaye's debut Maverick A Strike struck a chord with many. Fusing Dub, Reggae, Pop, Triphop and Indie, his amalgam of styles resonated throughout the music world like no other record at the time. Tricky's Maxinquaye  came close. Perhaps it's no coincidence that these two artists are family – they sure put their stamp on the sound of the Nineties!

Original vinyl issues were in short supply at the time of release, making this Music On Vinyl issue a very welcome one for the fans.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl

  • 500 numbered copies on transparent green vinyl

STEPPENWOLF - LIVE

In 1970 Steppenwolf released their Live LP, consisting mostly of songs played live on the tour to support their preceding album Monster. Apart from songs off that album, the live record of course also features the group's best known hit "Born To Be Wild" (the biker anthem known from the 1969  Easy Rider movie). Other big hits on the double album are "The Pusher" and "Magic Carpet Ride".

Formed in 1967 in Los Angeles, the band's music could be described as 'Heavy Metal R & B', while their name was inspired by Hermann Hesse's novel of the same name. Led by German immigrant John Kay, these psychedelic Blues rockers will without a doubt be remembered forever for one of the best rock anthems of all time.

TANKARD – album cover and tracklist revealed!

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 31, 2014

DEAR JERRY: I have searched every way I know of for a song from the '60s, by a male vocalist.

What I do remember is twice, during breaks in the music, that he says "Peaches."

Can you identify this apparently obscure record from just one meager clue?
—Thom Liffick, Evansville, Ind.

DEAR THOM: Fortunately, I know of only one "Peaches" that matches your meager clue, so I think we can close this basket, er, case.

The artist is Dale Hawkins, best known for the 1950s rock classics, "Susie-Q" and "La-Do-Dada" on the legendary Checker label. A few years later (1962) he made one record for the not-so-legendary Zonk Records Inc.

This disc coupled "Peaches" with "Gotta Dance" (Zonk 1002), both Hawkins originals.

Predominantly a guitar-driven instrumental, there are indeed two times when the music pauses and Dale says (not sings) "Peaches come from Georgia … gonna get me some."

However, it is the demand for the otherwise unavailable "Gotta Dance" that has driven the value of Zonk 1002 up to around $250.

DEAR JERRY: I am trying to find the name and singer of an old beach music favorite.

This female vocalist asks "whatda ya gonna do" and also mentions "Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde."

Any help would be greatly appreciated
—Bill Elam, Charlotte, N.C.

DEAR BILL: With that first clue, you stopped immediately before getting to the title. It's the next three words: what are you gonna do "When I'm Gone."

A little later she tells her soon-to-be ex, "you're a real Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde."

The singer is Brenda Holloway, and "When I'm Gone" (Tamla 54111) became a Top 25 hit in April 1965.

DEAR JERRY: One of my favorite 45s in the mid-'60s was "Cutest Little Thing," by Roy Clark.

To me, it was as good as any teener song from that era.

Recently, one of the online oldies channels played "Cutest Little Thing," but though their version was by Clark, it was a very different recording.

I e-mailed them to find out more but got no reply. Maybe you can tell me how they came up with this alternative track.
—Donald Varner, Lincoln, Neb.

DEAR DONALD: Your letter evokes my personal fondness for teener tunes of the early '60s, many from the great Jerry Fuller ("Shy Away," "Guilty of Loving You," "First Love Never Dies," etc.), and of course the Denny Reed hit that defines the genre, "A Teenager Feels It Too."

Rightfully taking its place among the best is "Cutest Little Thing," by RAY Clark, not Roy.

As an aside, I always felt this cute little thing would have been a perfect song for Rick Nelson.

The reason what you heard on the radio didn't match the tune in your memory is because there are two separate recordings on two different records from two different companies, issued two years apart.

The first "Cutest Little Thing" (D.W.A. 1001) came out in 1961, and runs about 1:53.

The next release (Louis 6803), issued in 1963, shows a running time on the label as 2:05, when it really is only 1:45.

It is instantly possible to know which version you're hearing, and it takes only one second. The first word cinches it.

The 1961 issue (D.W.A.) begins with "Cutest little thing I've ever seen."

The 1963 issue (Louis) begins with "You're about the cutest little thing I've ever seen."

There are several other lyrical differences, plus the '61 track doesn't fade out quite as fast as the alternative take.

IZ ZAT SO? Mention above of Rick Nelson brings to mind a nugget of music trivia that we have never mentioned in this column.

During 1963, an amazing total of 17 different songs by Rick appeared on one or more of the national charts.

Two things factoring into this unlikely happening are that seven of his 1963 singles were double-sided hits, making 14 right there. Also, beginning in March, both Rick's new label (Decca) and previous label (Imperial) had regular releases.

Chronologically, here are the Imperial nine and Decca eight:

"It's Up to You" (Imperial)
"I Need You" (Imperial)
"That's All" (Imperial)
"I'm in Love Again" (Imperial)
"You Don't Love Me Anymore (And I Can Tell)" (Decca)
"I Got a Woman" (Decca)
"If You Can't Rock Me" (Imperial)
"Old Enough to Love" (Imperial)
"Gypsy Woman" (Decca)
"String Along" (Decca)
"A Long Vacation" (Imperial)
"Fools Rush In" (Decca)
"There's Not a Minute" (Imperial)
"Down Home" (Decca)
"Today's Teardrops" (Imperial)
"For You" (Decca)
"That's All She Wrote" (Decca)

Even with two labels fighting for a piece of the action, Nelson's 17 chart songs in one calendar year equals Elvis Presley's total for 1956. Actually, he compiled 17 hits in just 10 months, as his streak didn't begin until March — and they were all from one company, RCA Victor.

Time Out Of Mind (Pre-Order) by Bob Dylan

This is the 30th Bob Dylan album, released in 1997. Time Out of Mind is hailed as one of Dylan's best albums, and it went on to win three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1998.

The album features a particularly atmospheric sound, the work of producer (and past Dylan collaborator) Daniel Lanois, whose innovative work with carefully placed microphones and strategic mixing.

Sonically, the album is reminiscent of Oh Mercy, the last album Dylan recorded with producer Daniel Lanois, but Time Out of Mind has a grittier foundation - by and large, the songs are bitter and resigned, and Dylan gives them appropriately anguished performances.

Original vinyl copies of Time Out Of Mind were made in small numbers, making this official reissue a much needed one!

PledgeMusic and Cleopatra Records Join Forces to Re-issue Van Morrison's The Complete 1967 Bang Sessions

The Double LP Limited Pressing in a Velvet Cover on Red Splatter Vinyl includes the colossal hit “Brown Eyed Girl”

PledgeMusic, the leading direct-to-fan company and Cleopatra Records, an independent L.A. based record label with an eclectic roster of artists, have announced a pre-order for the re-issue of the legendary album of Van Morrison, The Complete Bang Sessions. Cleopatra Records is pressing a strictly limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies of this 180 gram Red & Black Spatter vinyl in a luxurious black velvet gatefold cover, an exclusive for fans only available through PledgeMusic’s platform.

Look up the phrase “blue-eyed soul” in the dictionary and there you will find a picture of Van Morrison. But in 1967 Van Morrison was finished with the record industry, after disbanding Them and exiling himself away in Belfast. Producer Bert Berns managed to convince Van Morrison to return to the states and record for Bang. It was these early sessions which would mark the beginning of an incredibly successful career, beginning with the colossal hit “Brown Eyed Girl”. Every fan who pledges support will receive the highly collectible vinyl for The Complete Bang Sessions. Pledge at pledgemusic.com

Jayce Varden, President, North America at PledgeMusic, commented: “Van Morrison is one of the most talented artists of our time and PledgeMusic is thrilled to partner with Cleopatra Records to give his fans the rare chance to get their hands on this exclusive deluxe packaged item.”

Matt Green, Vice President of Acquisitions at Cleopatra Records added, “Cleopatra Records is proud to present Van Morrison’s smashing solo debut in a beautiful package & pressing, which a work of this caliber deserves.”

Happy Birthday To The 45rpm Record

written by Robert Benson

Happy Birthday to an old friend, the 45 rpm record officially turns 65 years old today!

The 45rpm record was initially introduced in 1949 by RCA Records as a smaller, more durable replacement for the heavy 78 shellac-based records of the time. The 45 was created by RCA as a competitive move against one their rival record companies, Columbia, which had just introduced the new microgroove 33 1/3 rpm LP. The number 45 came from taking 78 and subtracting Columbia's new 33 to equal the 45. Record companies and consumers alike faced an uncertain future as to which format would survive the 78rpm or the 45rpm; in what was known as the “War of the Speeds.” In 1949 Capitol and Decca started issuing the new LP format and RCA relented and issued its first LP in January 1950. But the 45 rpm was gaining in popularity and Columbia issued its first 45s in February 1951. Soon other record companies saw the mass consumer appeal the new format allowed and by 1954 more than 200 million 45s had been sold.

So On March 31, 1949, RCA Victor released "Texarkana Baby" b/w "Bouquet of Roses" by Eddy Arnold. The first 45 to hit the Billboard charts was "A -- You're Adorable" by Perry Como, listed on the charts on May 7, 1949. The disc was made of green vinyl, part of an early plan to color-code singles according to the genre of music they featured. Others included yellow for children's songs and red for classical music. The next week, the year's biggest hit appeared on the Billboard charts -- "Riders In The Sky (A Cowboy Legend)” by Vaughn Monroe. The first 45rpm records were monaural and as stereo sound became more prevalent and popular in the 1960s, almost all 45rpm records were manufactured in stereo.

The historical and commercial significance of the 45rpm record has varied over time, the technological developments in recorded music and according to the audience of the particular artists and musical genres. In general, 45 records were more important to the music acts who sold music to the younger audiences (mostly teenagers) who tend to have limited financial resources and shorter attention spans. That said, the golden age for the 45 was in the 1950s and 1960s in early development of rock music. They were affordable and allowed artists the freedom of releasing a single song as opposed to a whole LP. Conversely, some singles helped to launch the sales of the albums that the musicians were promoting.

The length of the songs also evolved. In the 1950s, it was common for songs to be anywhere from two to two and a half minutes long and in the 1960s; the three minute single became the norm. This length was very convenient and fit the AM radio format very well. Millions of demo records were sent out to radio stations with specific instructions as to which song was supposed to be the ‘hit single,’ although there were some DJs that played the ‘B’ sides and those songs became hits. Elvis Presley was one of the first artists to release the ‘double-sided single’, meaning that both songs would ultimately end up on the charts. The Beatles followed suit and were also one of the first recording artists to push the envelope, so to speak and commonly had songs over the three-minute norm. In fact, there are some singles that had to be edited by radio stations and shortened to fit their particular formats. Don McLean’s 1972 hit “American Pie” is an example, the single was split up into two parts on the 45. The Beatles broke new ground in 1968 with their over seven minute epic “Hey Jude.”

The sales of the 45s were recorded on the record charts in most countries in a Top 40 format and these charts were often published in magazines (Billboard), television shows (American Bandstand) and radio programs often had the Top 40 countdown shows (Casey Casem). However, the 45 rpm record can never duplicate the sales figures from when the format was in its heyday because when the 45 was at its peak, it was the way to get music to the music consumer. Today there are too many other formats competing for the music dollar.

Nowadays, they still manufacture 45 rpm records, but on a much smaller scale than decades ago. Indie bands, r&b artists and punk bands love the format; it makes the music affordable for their target audience and, after all these years, 45 rpm records are still highly sought after by record collectors. Happy Birthday to an old friend, here’s for many more!

DEPECHE MODE - A BROKEN FRAME

Their second album A Broken Frame was released in 1982 and shows a growing band in its early stages, a group that's searching for direction and focus. Its versatility and highly diverse set of quintessential Eighties Pop make this a very interesting album, and every Depeche Mode fan that's eager to get an understanding of the makings of the group should own this record.

Key member Alan Wilder was already touring with the band at this time, but has not yet been involved with recording A Broken Frame. Their next effort however, Construction Time Again would feature Wilder in the arranging seat, thus shaping the unique sound of Depeche Mode forever.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve

DEPECHE MODE - CONSTRUCTION TIME AGAIN

The third album of Depeche Mode Construction Time Again (1983) was the first one to include talented band member and arranger Alan Wilder to the mix. The album was recorded in John Foxx's The Garden studio in London and mixed in the famous Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, the latter being famous for its delivery of classic albums by artists like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave and U2.

Experimenting with brand new instruments like the Synclavier that allowed sampling to be manipulated musically, Construction Time Again was a groundbreaking record that included industrial influences.

These influences would come to full fruition on subsequent albums Some Great Reward and Black Celebration. Songs like "Pipeline", "Love In Itself", "Shame" and "Everything Counts" turned out to become classic Depeche material.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve

DEPECHE MODE - VIOLATOR

The first Depeche album to sell over a million copies in the United States, Violator (1990) is often regarded as Depeche Mode's finest work. Not only containing the world hits "Personal Jesus" (later beautifully reinterpreted by Johnny Cash) and "Enjoy The Silence" (with its epic video), each and every song on Violator is worthy of mentioning: for instance the beautiful and haunting album closer "Clean", and two further hit singles "Policy Of Truth" and "World In My Eyes", all fine examples of Gahan, Wilder and Gore's combined magic.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • Insert

DEPECHE MODE - ULTRA

Released in 1997, Ultra proved that Depeche Mode were not ready to quit yet, with the departure of key member Alan Wilder fresh in people's memory. By delivering a strong set of new songs, Martin Gore, David Gahan and Alan Fletcher proved that they were still relentlessly on top of their game.

The album reached #5 on the Billboard 200, carried by strong singles like the album opener "Barrel Of A Gun", "It's No Good" and "Home". Having recovered from an almost fatal overdose, singer David Gahan took to his vocal duties like there's no tomorrow. In its darkest times, it almost looked as if the band would never be the same again or might have called its quits. Depeche Mode are built to last and Ultra is the ultimate evidence.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
