Album Review - This is The Town: A Tribute to Nilsson, Vol. 1

In my youth, while my friends were discovering Supertramp and Rush, I discovered the music of Harry Nilsson.  His LP's warmed my headphones on many a night.  Brooklyn indie record label Royal Potato Family has recently released 'This is The Town: A Tribute to Nilsson, Vol. 1,' a 20-track collection of predominantly young and obscure artists to interpret some of Nilsson's songs.  They were kind enough to send me a copy (on yellow vinyl!) to review.

Harry Nilsson was an under appreciated songwriter, a rare talent that was misunderstood at times but loved by his peers.  His escapades with John Lennon have been well documented and he was looked upon quite fondly.

In reviewing a compilation album, I find that I have to take each song as an individual recording, and base my observations and thoughts on the specific artist's rendition of the song.

Let's start with the first cut, Langhorne Slim's "Early In The Morning" from the 1971 LP 'Nilsson Schmilsson.' His raspy voice that captures the emotional depth and rolling boogie-woogie piano that was also prominent in Nilsson's version.  Dawn Landes does a superb job of the musically simplistic, snappy, tongue-in-cheek wrath of a scorned lover on the song "You're Breakin' My Heart" (from the 1972 LP 'Son of Schmilsson').

The third cut is a remake of "Jump Into The Fire," by Low Cut Connie. The rumbling bass lines, rollicking piano and almost controlled hysteria make this one of the most memorable cuts on the album (off the 1971 Nilsson Schmilsson LP).  Singer/songwriter Jenny-O contributes a circus-like balance and masterfully voiced-rootsy folk autobiographical rendition of the Nilsson cut "1941."  The Mommyheads bring a pleasant twist to the playful song "Me And My Arrow,' a landmark rendition mixed perfectly at Storefront Music by Adam Elk of the band.

Anne Nilsson (Harry’s daughter who also provided the lovely artwork) sings an uncanny, striking redo of the song "Gotta Get Up;" blended into a playful romp, delicate and beautiful. Blueberry's remake of "Poli High" captures the inherent qualities of the cut without being overpowering.  Willy Mason reflective narrative on "Think About Your Troubles" is tackled with daring ingenuity.  Yellowbirds' "Rainmaker" brings out the hazy sweetness of the cut into a pop friendly Tommy James and the Shondells-like vibe.

Marco Benevento's take on "Are You Sleeping" flows seamlessly and is tight and structured and pure pop pleasure. Rasputina's remake of the lyrically poignant "Sweethaven" is intoxicating thrilling.  Tracy Bonham does a standout job on her piano-bar based rendition of "Everybody's Talkin,'" a cut that grows on you every time you hear it; a wistful indie pop gem if there ever was one (which was written by Fred Neil, though Nilsson was the one who scored a hit with it).

Johnny Society's jazzy storyline of the quirky cut "Mr. Richland's Favorite Song" is more of the disoriented pop and delicious catchyness that has made Nilsson's songs stand the test of time.

“Each artist has taken a Nilsson song that meant something to them, and with passion and inspiration, transformed it into something that is both a fitting tribute, and entirely their own,” Kenny Siegal explains. “In doing so, they are helping Harry Nilsson to be remembered as his songs live again through these new creative interpretations.”

Tracklist:
Side One
1. Langhorne Slim - Early In The Morning
2. Dawn Landes - You’re Breakin’ My Heart
3. Low Cut Connie - Jump Into The Fire
4. Jenny O - 1941
5. The Mommyheads - Me and My Arrow
6. Annie Nilsson - Gotta Get Up
7. Blueberry - Poli High

Side Two
8. Willy Mason - Think About Your Troubles
9. Yellowbirds - Rainmaker (Nilsson /Martin)
10. Marco Benevento - Are You Sleeping?
11. Rasputina - Sweethaven
12. Tracy Bonham - Everybody’s Talkin’ (Fred Neil)
13. Johnny Society - Mr. Richland’s Favorite Song

Harry Nilsson became one of the most celebrated songwriters of his generation, and in the process, a reluctant pop star who none the less garnered a cult following that remains to this day.  This is a record for your collection that will be played often, just like the music of Harry Nilsson.   A wonderful, eclectic collection of Harry Nilsson's music that won't disappoint.

***** 5 out of 5 stars from the CVR blog!

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 9, 2014

DEAR JERRY: Here is a topic that is not addressed in any previous articles about One Hit Wonders.

Rare as it is, there have been a few folks who, after having a No. 1 hit, never had another song appear anywhere on a Billboard or Cash Box top hits chart.

What then is the title of each of those ill-fated follow-up singles, the ones that pretty much extinguished careers, at least in the singles category?

They are more than likely songs that hardly anyone but you knows.

Oh yeah, Bubbling Under (Billboard) and Looking Ahead (Cash Box) listings are outside the Top 100 and do not qualify as charted records.
—Erik Herman, Amarillo, Texas

DEAR ERIK: I'll give you 50 years of No. 1 One Hit Wonders, essentially covering the 20th century. This is not only to work within the vinyl era, but to allow for a post-1999 artist to one day return to the charts. We don't want to apply the One Hit Wonder label prematurely.

Our list is chronological, with the artist's name and their No. 1 hit, followed by their next record, the one that unexpectedly bombed, and from which they never recovered. Comments are added when necessary, particularly with Billboard and Cash Box variances:

1950: Anton Karas - "The Third Man Theme" (London 30005) / "Vilia" (Columbia 12478)

1952: Johnny Standley - "It's in the Book" (Capitol 2249) / "Proud New Father" (Capitol 2569)
"It's in the Book" was No. 1 on Billboard, but peaked at No. 3 on Cash Box.

1955: Joan Weber - "Let Me Go, Lover" (Columbia 40366) / "It May Sound Silly" (Columbia 40440)

1958: Silhouettes - "Get a Job" (Ember 1029) / "Headin' for the Poorhouse" (Ember 1032)

1958: Laurie London - "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" (Capitol 3891) / "Joshua" (Capitol 3973)

1958: Elegants - "Little Star" (Apt 25005) / "Goodnight" (Apt 27017)
"Goodnight," as well as the flip side, "Please Believe Me," both charted on Cash Box, but not Billboard. Included here because readers using only Billboard would say we missed it.

1963: The Singing Nun - "Dominique" (Philips 40152) / Soeur Sourire (The Singing Nun) - "Tous Les Chemins (All the Roads)" (Philips 40165)
"Tous Les Chemins" made the Cash Box Top 100, but not Billboard's. Same disclaimer as for the Elegants.

1966: Napoleon XIV - "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" (Warner Bros. 5831) / "Doin' the Napoleon" (Warner Bros. 5853)
"They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" was No. 1 on Cash Box, but peaked at No. 3 on Billboard.

1969: Zager & Evans - "In the Year 2525 (Exordium And Terminus)" (RCA 0174) / "Mr. Turnkey" (RCA 0246)
"Mr. Turnkey," as well as their next single, "Listen to the People," charted on Cash Box, but not Billboard. Same disclaimer as for the Elegants.

1973: "Dueling Banjos" - Eric Weissberg from the Warner Bros. Film Deliverance (Warner Bros. 7659) / Eric Weissberg & Deliverance - "Reuben's Train" (Warner Bros. 7718)
"Dueling Banjos" was No. 1 on Cash Box, but peaked at No. 2 on Billboard.

1974: Byron MacGregor - "Americans" (Westbound 222) / "How Good You Have It in America" (Westbound 225)
"Americans" was No. 1 on Cash Box, but peaked at No. 4 on Billboard.

1982: Vangelis - "Chariots of Fire - Titles" (Polydor 2189) / "To the Unknown Man" (RCA 13402)
For our purpose, chart appearances by Vangelis with other artists, such as Jon Anderson, are separate from solo Vangelis recordings. If those were considered he wouldn't be on this list.

1983: Taco - "Puttin' on the Ritz" (RCA 13574) / "Cheek to Cheek" (RCA 13646)
"Puttin' on the Ritz" was No. 1 on Cash Box, but peaked at No. 4 on Billboard.

1984: Nena "99 Luftballons" (Epic 04108) / "Just a Dream" (Epic 04440)
"99 Luftballons" was No. 1 on Cash Box, but peaked at No. 2 on Billboard.

1985: Jan Hammer - "Miami Vice Theme" (MCA 52666) / "Crockett's Theme" (MCA 53259)

1985: USA for Africa - "We Are the World"
No follow-up recording was made by this all-star assemblage: Dan Aykroyd; Kim Carnes; Ray Charles; Bob Dylan; Daryl Hall; James Ingram; Michael Jackson; Jean-Michael Jarre; Al Jarreau; Waylon Jennings; Billy Joel; Quincy Jones; Cyndi Lauper; Huey Lewis; Kenny Loggins; Bette Midler; Steve Perry; Lionel Richie; Smokey Robinson; Kenny Rogers; Diana Ross; Paul Simon; Bruce Springsteen; Tina Turner; Dionne Warwick; and Stevie Wonder.

1988 Bobby McFerrin - "Don't Worry Be Happy" / "Good Lovin'" (EMI 50163)

1989 Sheriff - "When I'm with You" (Capitol 44302)
This is a reissue of a 1982 single, originally released in Canada and the U.S. (Capitol 5199). Since the band split up about three years later, no follow-up to the 1989 hit was made.

1992 The Heights - "How Do You Talk to an Angel" (Capitol 44890) / "I'm Still on Your Side" (Capitol 56798)

IZ ZAT SO? Fortunately, most artists don't fizzle immediately following a No. 1 hit.

One interesting example is Gary Lewis and the Playboys, one of a small group of acts whose very first record reached No. 1 ("This Diamond Ring").

They didn't have another chart-topper, but each of their first seven releases (1965-1966) did enter the Top 10:

"This Diamond Ring" (1); "Count Me In" (2); "Save Your Heart for Me" (2); "Everybody Loves a Clown" (4); "She's Just My Style" (3); "Sure Gonna Miss Her" (9); and "Green Grass" (8).

This odd factoid may not interest Guinness, but we think it looks nice on his resume.

Straight Shooter (Pre-Order) by Bad Company

Straight Shooter is the second studio album by British supergroup Bad Company. The original album was released in April 1975.

One of the most acclaimed bands of the classic rock era, England's Bad Company has put its indelible stamp on rock 'n' roll with a straight-ahead, no-frills musical approach that has resulted in the creation of some of the most timeless rock anthems ever. Led by the incomparable singer and songwriter Paul Rodgers, arguably the finest singer in rock 'n ' roll and a huge songwriting talent.

Formed in 1973, Bad Company came to life when Rodgers was looking to start anew after the disintegration of his legendary band Free. His powerhouse vocals and songwriting were a main ingredient during Free's impressive five-year run; a period of time that saw the release of seven extremely influential albums that featured Free's minimalist blues-rock approach. Included among Free's dynamic body of work is the 1970 smash, "All Right Now," one of the most recognizable rock anthems ever recorded. Lyrics and melody by Rodgers. He was Free's main songwriter.

BRILL BRUISERS -The New Pornographers

Brill Bruisers is the first new release in four years from the acclaimed supergroup, who have been called, “virtually peerless in the world of power-pop and indie-rock” by NPR Music.

Additionally, the New Yorker describes the band’s music as, “...magnificent and clever…,” while Stereogum proclaims, “In recent history, no group has featured so much formidable established talent, collaborating on a regular basis.”

Of the album, lead-singer and main songwriter AC Newman comments, “This is a celebration record. After periods of difficulty, I am at a place where nothing in my life is dragging me down and the music reflects that. I’m grateful.” Produced by band-members John Collins (bass) with Newman, the 12-track album was recorded primarily at Little Blue in Woodstock, NY and at JC/DC Studios in Vancouver B.C. with additional recording in Austin, Brooklyn and Vermont.

Deluxe LP comes on multi-colored vinyl and includes 3D glasses and poster. Both LP versions include MP3 download coupon.

Tombs - Savage Gold

TOMBS’ third album Savage Gold is the most anticipated underground metal album of 2014.  The band’s  sophomore LP Path Of Totality unanimously topped 2011 end of the year metal lists (everyone from Decibel to Pitchfork to NPR, and more, dubbed it their top album of that year).  Savage Gold focuses the awesome strength of Tombs’ previous works into one brilliantly dark post-punk and extreme black-metal masterpiece.  Recorded and produced by Hate Eternal’s Erik Rutan (Cannibal Corpse, Goatwhore), Savage Gold both expands upon the moody post-punk foundations that Tombs’ prior albums explored while also bringing out the band’s most traditionally metal moments yet.  Once every few years a record comes along that sets a new benchmark for what can be done in heavy music.  This is that moment and this is that record.

SUM 41 - ALL KILLER NO FILLER

It would be a mistake to view Sum 41 as just another second-rate band cashing in on the early-'00s punk-pop boom, even if it did recruit Jerry Finn to produce All Killer No Filler. Just as Finn had done for both blink-182 and Green Day, he charges Sum 41's punk-pop with a razor-sharp edge, the sort of dynamic in-your-face sound that helps this music cross over to MTV and radio so well. Besides the notable production, a lot of credit should go to the band as well. Its songwriting is obviously more diverse here than it was a year earlier on its debut album, Half Hour of Power; for example, the group's rap and '80s metal influences rise to the surface more frequently here than on that first album and instill a fun sense of camp. ''Fatlip'' is perhaps the best example of how Sum 41 has made an effort to diversify the music with more than just power chords and melodic punk vocals.

Reissue LP by the label Asbestos. Single LP Limited Edition on Neon Pink colored vinyl. Only 400 copies.

Release on 07-01-2014

Wild in the Streets is the second studio album by the hardcore punk band Circle Jerks. It was originally released on March 4, 1982 through Faulty Products, a sub-label of I.R.S. Records. The title track is a cover song of theGarland Jeffreys song of the same name. Mike Ness of Social Distortion can be seen on the cover of the album; running wild in the streets.

ZIGGY MARLEY - WILD AND FREE

Ziggy Marley returns to more adult-oriented fare with Wild and Free, a pro-cannabis album that’s suitably laid-back, militant, and organic. Helping with the organic is producer Don Was, who surrounds Ziggy with warm tones and good vibes and nothing feeling showy or cold. This enhances the freely developing numbers like “Roads Less Traveled” (a slowly chugging track that sounds inspired by Dad’s classic Wailers’ cut “Exodus”) and “A Sign” (one of those light, bright songs that reminds you Ziggy’s Melody Makers often shared the same new hippie spirit as hip-hop’s Arrested Development). Freedom and marijuana fuel the album as pro-pot advocate Woody Harrelson offers narration on the excellent title track, while “Changes” lead to a “Personal Revolution” and on to enlightenment. A big swerve comes at the end with the eulogy for a prostitute called “Elizabeth,” but there’s little doubt that it’s a songwriting high point for Ziggy, tugging at the heartstrings with a minimal amount of words. Stoned to the bone with Was at the controls means this is one of the more humble and cool offerings in the Ziggy Marley catalog, but those are the same reasons it’s an album to return to, delivering that satisfying Rastaman vibration whenever listeners crave a mellow mood.

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

ERYKAH BADU - MAMA'S GUN

Mama's Gun is the second studio album by Neo Soul singer Erykah Badu, released in 2000. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, the album incorporates Funk, Soul and Jazz styles. Covering themes of insecurity, social issues and personal relationships, Badu delivered a highly intimate and personal album that reached Platinum two months after its release. Mama's Gun features substantial contributions from several members of the Soulquarians outfit, of which Badu was a member. It also features guests such as soul singer Betty Wright and trumpeter Roy Hargrove.

The album contains the single "Bag Lady" which, with its colorful, artsy music video, shot to #1 on the R&B charts, and also into the Top 10 on the billboard charts. "Bag Lady" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song. Also the song "Didn't Cha Know?" was nominated for Best R&B Song.

Rolling Stone magazine applauded her for taking "chances the way Stevie Wonder or Nina Simone did in their prime" and went on to say "she has taken her art to the next level." Entertainment Weekly called the album a "'70s soul homage featuring live musicians and a smooth-funk sound that wouldn't be out of place on a CTI record."

GRAM PARSONS - EARLY YEARS VOL. 1 & 2

The Early Years Volume 1 & 2 brings together Gram Parsons' (International Submarine Band, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers) earliest recordings in one convenient and beautiful document on 180 gram audiophile vinyl. It may be a good bit different than the music that made Parsons a legend, but these rough tapes show the talent was always there and was capable of expressing itself in a variety of ways.

The first ten songs were taken from a demo Parsons recorded in 1965 at a radio station with the Shilos, a Kingston Trio-type folk group he sang with for a few years. Originals like "Big Country" and "Zah's Blues" show he was already making his mark as a songwriter. Next are eight living-room recordings from late 1965 of Parsons performing solo with his guitar in a friend's apartment in New York City. The performances are thoughtful and full of soul, and the songs show Parsons was strongly developing his creative talent. The set also includes a pair of tunes Parsons cut with The Like, his short-lived rock band. The vinyl set closes with a few tunes Parsons recorded with Brandon de Wilde. Their recordings of "Do Right Woman" and "Together Again" are the first glimpses of the style that would become Parsons' quality mark.

A must-have document of Parsons' first musical efforts!

MOODY BLUES - ON THE THRESHOLD OF A DREAM

On The Threshold Of A Dream is the fourth album by The Moody Blues, released in 1969. Like most Moody albums, On The Threshold Of A Dream follows a concept. It explores dreams, especially on the second side, which climaxes with the "Voyage" suite, inspired in part by Richard Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra".

This album is oozing with bright, splashy creative flourishes in two seemingly contradictory directions that somehow come together as a valid whole. On The Threshold Of A Dream provided The Moody Blues with their first British #1 album and remained on the charts for an astonishing 70 weeks.

The Moody Blues are regarded as one of the most innovative and successful rock bands in music history and you only have to put down the needle on this record to be convinced that this bold statement is indeed a fact.

MR. BUNGLE - CALIFORNIA

California is the third and final studio album by Mr. Bungle and the follow-up to Disco Volante (1995). The American experimental band including Mike Patton (Faith No More, Tomahawk, Fantômas, etc) was formed in 1985 while the members were still in high school. Mr. Bungle released four demo tapes in the mid to late 1980s before being signed to a major label and releasing three full-length studio albums between 1991 and 1999. Mr. Bungle was known for its distinctive musical traits, often cycling through several musical genres within the course of a single song. Many of its songs had an unconventional structure and utilized a wide array of instruments and samples.

Originally released in 1999 California was generally well received. The album was previously only available on vinyl in the USA.

JOHNNY CASH - BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS

Originally released in 1963, Blood, Sweat and Tears is the fifteenth studio album by American icon Johnny Cash.

Essentially the album is a collection of songs about the  American working man. It includes the classic ballad "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer" and the single "Busted". Five years after the release of Blood, Sweat and Tears, both songs appeared on one of Cash's most famous records, At Folsom Prison [MOVLP274].

The album's title is inspired by a quote from Winston Churchill, saying he can offer "nothing but blood, toil, tears, and sweat." According to critics the album consists almost entirely of first-rate material and is an essential album in the Johnny Cash catalogue.  180 gram audiophile vinyl

The Mighty Fine- "Brothers and Smugglers" LP (Oxblood Vinyl w/ Yellow Splatter)

We are so excited to announce the addition of San Luis Obispo's THE MIGHTY FINE to the Creator-Destructor family! Formed in 2008, the California 4-Piece has been making waves on the West Coast with their special brand of mid-tempo melodic punk, sure to please fans of Hot Water Music, Alkaline Trio, and The Lawrence Arms.

The band's brand new LP, 'Brothers and Smugglers' will see a March 4th, 2014 release in Vinyl, CD, and Digital formats. Recorded throughout 2013 in North Hollywood with Producer Kyle Black (Strung Out, Set Your Goals, Comeback Kid), 'Brothers and Smugglers' is chock-full of powerful sing-alongs and punk rock anthems that are reminiscent of the No Idea / Epitaph persuasion of the last 20 years, while offering up a memorable and exciting spin on the sound. The 10 tracks that comprise 'Brothers and Smugglers' see the band at their very best, only improving on the powerful, catchy songwriting and knack for hooks that have gained the band attention thus far.

The Clean 'Anthology' Pre-Order (reissue)

Anthology serves as a celebration of The Clean, a band whose influence extends so far beyond their New Zealand home that even if you have never heard of The Clean before, you have surely heard of some of the bands (Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Superchunk, to name a few) who have been influenced by their unique blend of homemade garage rock, hook-filled melodies, and psychedelic experimentalism.

The album is a compilation of songs from across The Clean’s legendary musical career, which began in 1981 and continues today. Merge originally released the 2-CD Anthology in 2003, but in celebration of our 25th anniversary, we felt the time was right to release this essential collection on quadruple LP.

Hamish and David Kilgour formed The Clean in 1978. Hamish played drums, and David picked up a guitar and figured out how to play it as he went along. Various other folk passed through the Kilgour brothers’ orbit during the first two years or so before Robert Scott (The Bats) joined on bass. Hamish, David, and Robert all wrote songs and sang in The Clean, who made their first recordings for the renowned New Zealand label Flying Nun in 1981.

Anthology kicks off with The Clean’s call-to-arms debut “Tally Ho!”; the story of the infectious track’s $60 recording bill is now legendary. From there, it continues with the early EPs Boodle Boodle Boodle and Great Sounds Great in their entirety. The hits—“Billy Two,” “Anything Could Happen,” “Beatnik,” and “Getting Older”—and live favorites like “Point That Thing Somewhere Else” and instrumentals “Fish” and “At the Bottom” all serve up memories of the joyous noise that characterized The Clean of that time. These recordings, mostly made by the band with Chris Knox and Doug Hood at the helm of the 4-track, capture the bright, raw sound of a classic garage band.

After a brief breakup, the band recorded Vehicle, their first full-length, in 1989. Vehicle was made in three days and engineered by Alan Moulder (later to become one of the top producers of the alternative era, recording the Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, and My Bloody Valentine). The sounds of Vehicle and the two albums that followed it, Modern Rock (1994) and Unknown Country (1996), make up the bulk of discs 3 and 4 of the vinyl Anthology. The Clean used organ and other keyboards to mix bouncing pop tunes with continued experimentation.

In addition to selections from these full-length recordings, Anthology includes two songs released only on an American 7-inch and two that appeared on a bonus flexi-disc with the Modern Rock LP.

The Clean’s story is on-again/off-again purely by design. It suits the trio’s creative desires and keeps them clear of the machinery that threatened to interfere with that process from the moment they threatened to get awfully popular awfully quickly over thirty years ago. The Clean’s modern age has seen them splitting time and hemispheres: David Kilgour has a reputable solo catalog; Robert Scott has The Bats; and Hamish Kilgour has been an endearing and enduring fixture in New York City, playing with assorted combos.

Preorders and t-shirt bundles will ship to arrive on or around the release date of July 15.

Caribou 'Our Love' Pre-Order

You reach a point in life where the question of how to stay at the top of your game looms, with the only real solution being: you change the game. Our Love, the new album from Caribou, is the sound of Dan Snaith doing just that. Our Love, due October 7 on Merge Records, is the fifth studio album from Caribou.

Our Love is formed around a mixture of digital pop production, hip hop-inspired beats, muted house basslines, and a love of shuffling garage that can be traced all the way back to the time of Start Breaking My Heart – all of which are, of course, filtered through Dan’s own unique perspective. The warm analog sounds of classic soul should not be overlooked either, for they weave themselves most intensely into the record’s DNA. In fact, Our Love is probably Caribou’s most soulful record to date, with tracks like “Back Home” whose heartfelt lyrics – dealing in tired relationships and a weary kind of love – and organic nature cut through the bubbling synths and blissful euphoria of their synthetic constructions. It’s not all downbeat of course; while some thoughts linger on mortality, loss, and letting go, there is always an element of celebration.

Having followed up his Polaris Prize-winning 2007 record Andorra with the universally adored Swim in 2010 (selling nearly 175,000 copies worldwide and being named Album of the Year by Rough Trade, Mixmag, and Resident Advisor while also hitting The Guardian, Pitchfork, Spin, and Mojo’s Top 20), Dan has spent the intervening four years touring the world, bringing not only the sounds of Caribou to the stage but proving his immeasurable worth as a DJ with epic 7½-hour-long sets. In 2012, Caribou were personally invited to join Radiohead on the road while Dan released his first album under the guise of his dancefloor-loving pseudonym Daphni to widespread critical acclaim. Following the shape-shifting sounds of JIAOLONG and the brightly textured, fluid constructions of Swim – both inward-looking records in their own way – Dan withdrew to the basement once more to work on Caribou’s next opus. Only he didn’t: Our Love isn’t the sound of isolated creation but the sound of Dan at his most connected – with love for his listeners, his collaborators, and those closest to him.

Preorders will ship to arrive on or around the release date of October 7.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 2, 2014

DEAR JERRY: I found this statement in the Jerry Fuller biography posted by "All Music" (allmusic.com):

"Although Fuller had originally written 'Travelin' Man' with Sam Cooke in mind, he quickly realized he had Rick Nelson's number."

I seem to recall reading that Jerry not only didn't have Rick's number, but that he was shocked to find out that Rick knew of the song.

Since you have interviewed Fuller before in the column, can you look into this?
—Kevin Ricks, Bakersfield, Calif.

DEAR KEVIN: The first part of that sentence is true, the remainder is not — at least according to Jerry Fuller himself.

Here is his account of the "Travelin' Man" adventure — from trash can to million-seller:

"It's the first song I wrote that Rick recorded, but I didn't really write it for him. I wrote it for Sam Cooke.

"I researched how they refer to young girls in Germany (fraulein) and Mexico (senorita), and added Hong Kong, Alaska, and Waikiki to play upon the 'in every port I own the heart of at least one lovely girl' concept.

"After I finished writing, I called Glen Campbell and we went into the studio. Glen played guitar while I sang it like I thought Sam Cooke would. We recorded it on an acetate, or demo disc. We took that demo to J.W. Alexander, Sam Cooke's manager, and he said 'I'll give it a listen when I get a chance.' He must have played it at least once because Joe Osborn, who just happened to be in the office next door, heard it through the wall.

"Joe went over to Alexander's office and asked if he still had that traveling song he'd just played. J.W. reached into the trash can, retrieved the demo, then gave it to Joe.

"Osborn, the bass player in Nelson's band, played it for Rick who liked it and quickly recorded it. I had not yet met Joe, so when he called me and said 'Rick just heard your song and he's recording it,' I said 'Rick who, and what song?'

"He said 'Rick Nelson, and "Travelin' Man."

"No kidding, how'd HE get it, I asked. Joe then told me the story, and added: 'Rick is wondering if you have any more songs.'

"My quick reply: 'I got about 80 more and I'll get 'em right over to you!"

"Travelin' Man" went to No. 1 on all the charts, and, backed with "Hello Mary Lou" (Imperial 5741), sold over six million records.

Rick eventually recorded nearly two dozen more of Jerry Fuller's songs, several of which became huge hits

Alphabetically, here is the complete list (1961-1985), provided for us by Kent McCombs:

"A Stone's Throw" (unreleased)
"A Wonder Like You"
"Ain't Gonna Do You No Good"
"Baby You Don't Know"
"Break My Chain"
"Congratulations"
"Desire" (by the Trophies, including Rick)
"For Your Sweet Love"
"Hey There, Little Miss Tease"
"History Of Love"
"I Tried"
"It's Up To You"
"Just Take A Moment"
"Ladies Choice"
"Peddler Man"
"Poor Little Heart" (lost and unreleased)
"Poor Loser"
"Scratchin' " (by the Fleas, including Rick)
"Sweet Little Loveable You"
"That Warm Summer Night"
"Travelin' Man"
"You Got Me Gone"
"Young World"

Imagine how history would have been affected had the trash been picked up before Joe Osborn asked for and received that acetate.

DEAR JERRY: A few times in recent months you have written on the topic of instrumentals, and that gives me hope you will answer a question that no one else has been able to do.

Right about the time "Ahab the Arab" (Ray Stevens) was popular, there was an exotic instrumental that was the perfect companion, musically that is.

I clearly recall once when the dee jay played the two back-to-back and cleverly called it a "harem pairem."

Ahab's bold adventure takes place somewhere in the Middle East and this recording is definitely in that style, but without lyrics there are no other clues.

The instrumentation is unlike anything you'd hear in this part of the world, and I've heard nothing like it since.

Does any of this strike a chord with you?
—Pamela Mellon, Owensboro, Ky.

DEAR PAMELA: Yes, specifically a G-chord, 'G' in this case meaning Greece.

The exotic gizmo in the instrumental half of the harem pairem is called a bouzouki, and nowhere on earth is the bouzouki more significant than in Greece. It is as cherished there as a guitar is in the western world, and has been for nearly a hundred years.

Maintaining the harem connection — remember Ahab's secret paramour, Fatima, was plucked from the Sultan's harem — the title of this summer 1962 single is in fact "The Sultan's Harem" (Era 3076).

The primary artist credited on the label is violinist Hrach Yacoubian, but the stunning bouzouki solo is by Iordanis Tsomidis, one of Greece's most accomplished bouzouki masters.

Want more? There are numerous YouTube videos featuring Greek megastar Nana Mouskouri with bouzoukia accompaniment.

While you are there, reacquaint yourself with "The Sultan's Harem."
