Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

upcoming releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

DUKE ELLINGTON - INDIGOS

Indigos is a seminal Jazz album by big band superstar Duke Ellington, originally released in 1958. Ellington chose a set of easy listening ballads to be performed by his ace Big Band, putting less emphasis on the uptempo and danceable Swing the group was revered for.

Behind Ellington on piano, you'll hear a marvelous band including Paul Gonsalves on tenor sax, Shorty Baker on trumpet, Ray Nance on violin, Johnny Hodges on alto sax and Harry Carney on baritone sax, all being put in the solo spotlight on every song of this record.

This stereo reissue features the mono version of "The Sky Fell Down", thus featuring the original 1958 track listing, exactly as it was intended more than half a century ago. A timeless classic!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Stereo edition
  • Includes mono version of "The Sky Fell Down"

CASEY & THE PRESSURE GROUP - DUTCH RARE GROOVE VOL.3

Rare Groove enthusiasts worldwide will welcome the first ever vinyl release of this essential Casey & The Pressure Group compilation, sometimes referred to as the Dutch equivalent of Booker T & the MG's. A selection of tracks from the albums The Beast And I (1967), Powerhouse (1970), Lazybones (1970) and Memphis Revisited (1972) are featured here on 180 gram vinyl, including a download code.

Casey's influence on Dutch Pop music history cannot be underestimated, having featured on 2800 (!) recordings. Organist and keyboardist Cees Schrama rose to fame in the late Sixties as a session man for various Dutch international stars like Shocking Blue (that's his catchy piano-lick on the 1970 U.S. chart topper "Venus"), he played keys on several early Golden Earring tracks as well as Mouth & MacNeal's "How Do You Do", which reached the American top ten in 1972. The renowned Nederbeat movement, with acts like The Shoes, The Haigs, Sandy Coast, Earth & Fire and many others (check out the Dutch Rare Masters compilation on a double 10" [MOV10010]) all used Schrama as a session man.

He was also doing his own thing with his combo Casey & The Pressure Group. On his first solo-album The Beast And I (1967) he was billed as Crazy Casey, with The Golden Earrings as his session men. After many years in the Pop music business he slowly but surely managed to return to his first and greatest love: Jazz music! Dutch broadcasting company VARA asked Schrama to assemble a hip and swinging orchestra. Schrama came up with Casey & The Funky Eight, including the horns that also played on his Powerhouse (1970) album. Schrama also became the host of music RTV programme TROS Sesjun for 32 years, the longest running live Jazz show in the world!

FRATELLIS - COSTELLO MUSIC

Costello Music is the debut album by Scottish indie rock band The Fratellis. Originally released in 2006, the album was a great commercial success. The album had five single releases  of which "Chelsea Dagger" was the most successful one. It peaked at #5 in the UK and #4 in the Netherlands. The album also performed very well in the album charts, peaking at #2 in the UK Albums Chart and spending 83 weeks in the Top 100. As a result of the international success the band toured extensively, playing shows in Europe, the United States and Japan. In 2007 the band won the BRIT award for Best British Breakthrough Act.

The beautiful re-issue of this much requested vinyl release is pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl, with the first 2000 copies being individually numbered and pressed on dark green transparent vinyl.

CHET ATKINS & MARK KNOPFLER - NECK AND NECK

American Country music legend Chet Atkins and British singer-songwriter, guitarist and Dire Straits front man Mark Knopfler joined forces to produce the wonderful album Neck And Neck.

ELVIS COSTELLO - JULIET LETTERS

The Juliet Letters is the 14th studio album by singer and songwriter Elvis Costello. Originally released in 1993, the critically acclaimed album peaked at No. 18 on the UK album chart.

The entire instrumental backing for The Juliet Letters is provided by The Brodsky String Quartet. Costello had become interested in classical music around the time of Spike and began attending classical concerts. One of the ensembles he enjoyed most was the Brodsky Quartet. Once Costello and the Brodskies got to know each other, they were keen on working together, eventually resulting in a full length album.

Costello described The Juliet Letters as "a song sequence for string quartet and voice and it has a title. It's a little bit different. It's not a Rock opera. It's a new thing." This long out of print and much requested vinyl release is now re-issued on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

TEMPTATIONS - GETTIN' READY

Gettin' Ready (1966) by The Temptations marked the transition of the group from having Smokey Robinson as its main producer, with new producer Norman Whitfield taking over Robinson's position. On the instrumentation you'll hear the marvelous Funk Brothers, with their defining Motown sound.

Two #1 R&B hit singles, one from each producer, are included: "Get Ready" from Robinson with Eddie Kendricks on lead, and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" from Whitfield with David Ruffin on lead. Also included is the original version of "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", which would be rerecorded as a hit for Marvin Gaye in 1969.

The Music On Vinyl edition contains two bonus tracks on Side Two: "Give It Up" & "The Man Who Don't Believe In Love", a track originally penned by Marv Johnson.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Includes 2 bonus tracks: "Give It Up" & "The Man Who Don't Believe In Love"

WILSON PICKETT - WICKED PICKETT

Wicked Pickett (1966) is a fabulous Soul album, done when Pickett was in the midst of his best period at Atlantic. The album has everything - great songs, wonderful production and arrangements, and a hungry, galvanizing Wilson Pickett hollering, screaming, shouting, and soaring on anything he covered, from ballads to uptempo dance and midtempo wailers.

Containing the hits "Mustang Sally", "Sunny", Dan Penn's "You Left The Water Running"and the classic "Knock On Wood", this is a must have album for everyone with a craving for Soul, Soul, and more Soul!  On 180 gram audiophile vinyl

ZAPP - I

Zapp (also known as the Zapp Band or Zapp and Roger) is undoubtedly the most influential group in the Electro sub-genre of Funk. The group received attention in the early 1980s for implementing heavy use of the talk-box, which became one of their most well known characteristics. Zapp served as partial inspiration toward the creation of the G-Funk sound of Hip Hop popular on the West Coast of the United States in the early to mid 1990s, with many of their songs sampled by numerous Hip Hop artists, most notably Dr. Dre.

The original line-up consisted of four brothers—Roger Troutman, Larry Troutman, Lester Troutman and Terry Troutman—and non-Troutman family members Bobby Glover and Gregory Jackson. During their early stages, they worked closely with members George Clinton and Bootsy Collins of the seminal Funkateers of Parliament-Funkadelic. Their debut album I was released in 1980, having a P-funk reminiscent sound as a result of Clinton's and Collin's input on the production.

Zapp achieved most of its mainstream recognition from the single "More Bounce To The Ounce" from the same album, now widely regarded as a classic example of early 1980s electronic Funk. The single propelled the album to Gold status almost overnight.   On 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Renihilation - Liturgy

Thrill Jockey is happy to present a vinyl re-issue of Liturgy's 2009 debut Renihilation. The album is pressed on virgin vinyl and presented with a printed inner sleeve and free download card. While supplies last mailorder customers will be treated to a white vinyl edition (LIMITED TO ONLY 500).

Liturgy’s debut full-length, 2009’s Renihilation, is unrelenting and hyper-focused, an astonishing balance of pure chaos and meticulous composition, and never wavering in its dedication to its own conceptual core. Even as it introduced the band to the metal community at large, Renihilation established Liturgy as a group that refused to play by the same rules that had dictated black metal aesthetics up to that point, instead blazing their own white-hot path that used black metal as a means to express something much grander, and much more elusive. It simultaneously works within and against these pre-existing forms, and even five years after its initial release, seems completely alien and unparalleled. These are the first recordings of the band’s quartet line-up of Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, Greg Fox, Bernard Gann, and Tyler Dusenbury, laid to tape just several months after it coalesced. Renihilation is the work of a band pushing their limits physically and musically to organically realize music that was conceived completely in the abstract.

The term Renihilation is meant to signify the negation of a negation, producing affirmation and positivity, an ideology reflected in the music. Though it is perhaps the most aggressive album in the band’s discography, at times startling so, it is not weighed down by depressive tendencies. Colin Marston’s production expertly accents the brightness in their sound. From the vocal incantations that pepper the album, offering brief respites from the onslaught, to the ferocious explosions of “Pagan Dawn,” “Ecstatic Rite” and the title track, Renihilation is the first spectacular acheivement from a band that continues to reinvent itself and push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the context of extreme music.

LP pressed on virgin vinyl with a fully artworked inner sleeve and a free download coupon.

This is a pre-order for August 26th street date.

***All mailorder copies will ship on limited WHITE vinyl while supplies last!***

WHITE HILLS - Glitter Glamour Atrocity

Pressed on vinyl for the first time, remastered and featuring brand-new artwork.

This is WHITE HILLS’ second album, originally self-released in January 2007 as a limited edition CD and unavailable on any other format until now.

Glitter Glamour Atrocity has now been mastered by Heba Kadry at Timeless Mastering and is being released on both CD & LP with brand new artwork.  WHITE HILLS perform album track "Under Skin Or By Name" in the Jim Jarmusch film, Only Lovers Left Alive.

Sonically, it is radically different from anything else coming out of the New York underground at the time, and it set the template for the singular concoction of heavy psychedelic music, krautrock, and a worship of pure sound they have explored in different variations ever since.

CD version in a 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold jacket.

The Laze - The Phantom Of The Opera (1925 Motion Picture Soundtrack) On Limited Vinyl

The Phantom of the Opera is perhaps one of the most iconic horror films in history. Directed by Rupert Julian in 1925, this silent movie starred Lon Chaney in the lead role of the deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to make the woman he loves a star.

As legendary as its many adaptations on the silver screen and on stage is its history of fitting soundtracks. Throughout the decades that followed many composers and artists worldwide took up the task to write fresh new scores for this iconic picture. One Way Static Records proudly presents the latest installment in this tradition with a brand new modern re-score composed & performed by UK septet THE LAZE.

The Laze have developed quite a reputation across the UK for their spine-tingling live performances and expansive soundscapes. Influenced by a history of horror soundtracks, from Bernard Hermann & Angelo Badalamenti to Goblin & John Carpenter, The Laze implemented elements of Progressive Rock, Classical, Jazz, Heavy Metal & Electronica in their score. The original soundtrack will be the group’s fourth long-player. The band’s last release was 2010’s Spacetime Fabric Conditioner, a Sci-Fi concept album; which went on to be remixed by Steve Moore (Zombi), Forest Swords and Brontt Industries Kapital.

The band premiered their live soundtrack at Liverpool’s Picturehouse cinema, in the arts hub of FACT, on Halloween 2010. The sold-out, one-night-only performance led to further performances in UK cinemas, which concluded with a sold-out tour of selected Picturehouse Cinemas for Halloween 2011. Now they are bringing the Phantom into your home.

This new sonic adaptation comes on deluxe tip-on gatefold packed vinyl editions, compact disc & cassette. Featuring original black and silver artworks by LUKE INSECT

The 20 Best Drinking Songs

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 16, 2014

DEAR JERRY: The first pop song I ever heard that was dedicated to the hits of the past was "Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me of You)," by Little Caesar and the Romans. That was in 1961, and it's the one that got me collecting songs of that type.

It seems many other tunes were inspired by this hit. I have dozens now, from '61 to as late as 1986 (Journey's "Raised on Radio"). Still, there is one I need but don't know enough about.

I heard it in the '70s, possibly around the time of "American Pie," and the title might be "Welcome Home," or something similar.

Two oldies mentioned in it are "Devil Or Angel" (Clovers) and "Only You" (Platters).

Is this enough info for you to pull another rabbit out of the hat?
—Freddie Jurgensen, Omaha, Neb.

Little Caesar and the Romans
DEAR FREDDIE: You were not the only one motivated by "Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me of You)." Several other songs about songs came out that summer, among them: "Dedicated (To the Songs I Love) (3 Friends); "Play It Again" (Tina Robin); "Juke Box Saturday Night" (Nino and the Ebb Tides); "More Money for You and Me" (Four Preps); and of course, "Memories of Those Oldies But Goodies" (Little Caesar and the Romans).

Unlike many latter day oldies tributes, "Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me of You)" (Del-Fi 4158) salutes the genre as a whole, without referring to any specific titles or artists.
Not so with Caesar's sequel, "Memories of Those Oldies But Goodies" (Del-Fi 4166). This track is filled with direct references to these 14 oldies but goodies:

"Over the Mountain, Across the Sea" (Johnnie & Joe); "Stranded in the Jungle" (Cadets); "In the Still of the Nite" (Five Satins); "Oh, What a Night" (Dells); "Tonite, Tonite" (Mello-Kings); "Story Untold" (Nutmegs); "Heaven in Paradise" (Little Julian Herrera); "Earth Angel" (Penguins); "White Cliffs of Dover" (Checkers); "The Glory of Love" (Velvetones); "I Only Have Eyes for You" (Flamingos); "Love You So" (Ron Holden); and "Donna" (Ritchie Valens). They conclude the tribute with the most recent "oldie," the one that, just two months earlier, started it all for them, for you, and for many others: "Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me of You)."

Little Caesar's nod to the Five Satins' "In the Still of the Nite," in "Memories of Those Oldies But Goodies" is well-timed, since it is the Five Satins Featuring Fred Parris whose 1973 recording of "Very Precious Oldies (Welcome Back Home)" (Kirschner 4251) is the record you still seek.

DEAR JERRY: Just before Beatlemania, the whole world was twisting. And for a couple of years there were plenty of "twist" hits.

Can you review twist mania music as you did with the British Invasion?
—Kyle Slocumb, Upper Darby, Pa.

DEAR KYLE: The best way to recap this story, one with more twists than a Hitchcock thriller, is to develop a twist timeline.

Using mostly Cash Box charts (they are the most search friendly), we'll list the songs according to their Top 100 debut dates. This accounts for 33 twist titles over about 44 months.

July 23, 1960: "The Twist" (Hank Ballard and the Midnighters) and "The Twist" (Chubby Checker)

Though both versions of "The Twist" debuted in the Top 100 on July 23, 1960, Ballard's single actually came out in late 1958, or very early in '59, making this a reissue.

Sept 24: "Twistin' U.S.A." (Danny and the Juniors)
Nov. 5: "Kissin' and Twistin' (Fabian)
Dec. 10: "Twistin' Bells" (Santo & Johnny)
Jan. 14, 1961: "(Let's Do) The Hully Gully Twist" (Bill Doggett)
June 24: "Let's Twist Again" (Chubby Checker)
Nov. 18: "The Peppermint Twist (Part 1)" (Joey Dee and the Starliters) and "The Twist" (Chubby Checker) (Reissue of his 1960 hit.)
Dec. 2: "Let's Twist Again" (Chubby Checker) (Reissue of his June 24th entry.)
Dec. 11: "Twistin' U.S.A." (Chubby Checker) (Flip side of "The Twist." Charted by Billboard but not Cash Box)
Dec. 9: "Rock-a-Hula Baby (Twist Special)" (Elvis Presley)
Dec. 16: "Twist-Her" (Bill Black's Combo)
Dec. 23: "Dear Lady Twist" (Gary [U.S.] Bonds)
Jan. 20, 1962: "Percolator (Twist)" (Billy Joe and the Checkmates) and "Oliver Twist" (Rod McKuen)
Jan. 27: "Twistin' Postman" (Marvelettes)
Feb. 3: "Twistin' the Night Away" (Sam Cooke)
Feb. 10: "Hey, Let's Twist" (Joey Dee and the Starliters)
Feb. 17: "Soul Twist" (King Curtis and the Noble Knights)
March 3: "Slow Twistin'" (Chubby Checker & Dee Dee Sharp)
March 10: "The Alvin Twist" (David Seville and the Chipmunks)
March 31: "Twist, Twist Senora" (Gary [U.S.] Bonds); "Ev'rybody's Twistin'" (Frank Sinatra); and "Twistin' Matilda" (Jimmy Soul)
April 21: "Meet Me at the Twistin' Place" (Johnny Morisette)
April 28: "Teach Me to Twist" (Bobby Rydell & Chubby Checker) and "(Twistin') White Silver Sands" (Bill Black's Combo)
May 12: "Bristol Twistin' Annie" (Dovells)
June 2: "Twist and Shout" (Isley Brothers)
Sept. 22: "Twistin' with Linda" (Isley Brothers)

"Twistin' with Linda" dropped off the chart after seven weeks, effectively ending the twist craze — which is not to say we'd heard the last of twistin' songs.

Here are two more for the collection:

July 20, 1963: "Twist It Up" (Chubby Checker)
March 7, 1964: "Twist and Shout" (Beatles)

IZ ZAT SO? The twist's peak week began March 31, 1962, when these 13 twist tunes occupied a Top 100 spot:

4. "Slow Twistin'" (Chubby Checker & Dee Dee Sharp)
6. "Twistin' the Night Away" (Sam Cooke)
29. "Soul Twist" (King Curtis and the Noble Knights)
33. "The Twist" (Chubby Checker)
41. "Percolator (Twist)" (Billy Joe and the Checkmates)
44. "Dear Lady Twist" (Gary [U.S.] Bonds)
54. "The Alvin Twist" (David Seville and the Chipmunks)
58. "Hey, Let's Twist" (Joey Dee and the Starliters)
64. "Twist, Twist Senora" (Gary [U.S.] Bonds)
68. "Peppermint Twist (Part 1)" (Joey Dee and the Starliters)
73. "Twistin' Postman" (Marvelettes)
95. "Ev'rybody's Twistin'" (Frank Sinatra)
99. "Twistin' Matilda" (Jimmy Soul)

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SoundStageDirect

The Beatles Mono Box Set (Pre-Order) by The Beatles

The Beatles in mono: This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960's, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary. The Beatles’ nine U.K. albums, the American-compiled Magical Mystery Tour, and the Mono Masters collection of non-album tracks will be released in mono on 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork. Newly mastered from the analogue master tapes, each album will be available both individually and within a lavish, limited 14-LP boxed edition, The Beatles In Mono, which also includes a 108-page hardbound book.

In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles’ acclaimed mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY®-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz. While The Beatles In Mono CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960's, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers. Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles’ albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960's. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.

Manufactured for the world at Optimal Media in Germany, The Beatles’ albums are presented in their original glory, both sonically and in their packaging. The boxed collection’s exclusive 12-inch by 12-inch hardbound book features new essays and a detailed history of the mastering process by award-winning radio producer and author Kevin Howlett. The book is illustrated with many rare studio photos of The Beatles, fascinating archive documents, and articles and advertisements sourced from 1960's publications.

 Beatles For Sale Vinyl LP
 Sgt Pepper Vinyl LP
 Magical Mystery Tour Vinyl LP
The Beatles (White Album) Vinyl 2xLP
 Mono Masters Vinyl 3xLP

Via Michael Fremer (Analog Planet) on the mastering process:

"The EQ applied was based upon the original cutting engineers’ notes as well as careful listening to original first lacquer, first mother, first stamper EMI pressings (-1, 1, G matrix). The cartridge used was Ortofon’s 2M Black.

It’s important to remember that the tapes have aged—some as much as fifty years—and the monitoring, playback and mastering equipment have changed as well, even though the work was done in the very same room in which the originals were mastered. Solid state has replaced tubes in the cutting chain.

Lacquers were cut using Abbey Road Studios’ Neumann VMS-80 lathe, equipped with a Neumann SX-74 cutter head. The originals were cut on a Scully lathe, perhaps with a Westrex cutter head."

Bitches Brew (Pre-Order) by Miles Davis

“Listen to This.” As the original working title for Bitches Brew, the invitation resonates as the best way to approach a record that shattered conventions, altered music history, and still sounds far ahead of its time. The aural Mount Rushmore of jazz fusion, Bitches Brew is rightly ranked by virtually every significant press outlet among the 100 greatest albums ever made in any genre.

Sewn together with vibrant colors, voodoo textures, and ethereal moods, the 1970 landmark emerges with supreme detail and nonpareil feeling on Mobile Fidelity’s definitive 180g 2LP. Mastered from the original master tapes, these audiophile editions join the ranks of eleven other essential Davis sets given supreme sonic treatment by Mobile Fidelity.

Davis conceived Bitches Brew by having the musicians stand in a semi-circle, where he pointed at them with vague directions for tempo, solos, and cues. The collective improvisation and interplay spawned a galaxy of melodies and grooves later spliced together by producer Ted Macero. Here, these distinct creations take shape with utmost realism. Mobile Fidelity’s reissues envelop you in expansive warm tonal blankets.

Gathering a Hall of Fame-worthy lineup of musicians, Davis follows through on his idea to “put together the greatest rock and roll band you ever heard” on Bitches Brew. The vast psychedelic expanses of warped echoes, liquid reverb, and tape loops speak to the leader’s ambitious contrasts of light and dark, fear and hope. Yet the most absolute characteristic of this watershed effort lies in how it encourages free thought—the very principle with which Davis conceived the everlasting beauty that is Bitches Brew.

Pressed on 2 blue LPs, Overstep is Mike Gordon's fourth solo studio album, following Moss, The Green Sparrow, and Inside In.

Gordon and Scott Murawski penned the songs for Overstep during a series of writing retreats in New England. He turned over the producing reins to Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Uncle Tupelo, Pixies) and invited a few new players into the studio, including legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain (Jon Brion, Fiona Apple).

"Yarmouth Road," the infectious, reggae-inspired number is already familiar to Phish fans after its debut (along with "Say Something") on the band's Summer 2013 tour. Distant industrial noise gradually gives way to lush guitars and welcoming vocal harmonies in "Ether," the album opener (listen to the track here), while "Jumping" is a rhythmic puzzle box, detailing a series of thoughts that take place in a fleeting 1.5 seconds.

Many of these songs promise huge payoffs in a live environment, most notably two plunging grooves that seem capable of bringing a house down. "Tiny Little World" opens with a polite reverie about a fetching woman in a coffee shop, but morphs quickly into pulsing boogie as the narrator is carried away by desire and bravado. Debauched exhortations to dance surface again in "Face," which chugs along atop Chamberlain's simple but undeniable pocket.

Each LP includes a voucher to download an MP3 version of the album.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at NewOnVinyl

KINGDOM COME - KINGDOM COME

Kingdom Come is the debut album by Hard Rock band Kingdom Come. The band formed in 1987 and released the self titled album in 1988. Produced by Bob Rock (Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and Metallica) and Kingdom Come front man Lenny Wolf, the album went Gold the day it was shipped and reached Number 12 on the Billboard 200 Album Charts.

The band’s first single “Get It On” was the most requested song for 6 weeks on AOR radio stations. The second single for the power ballad “What Love Can Be” received much airplay on radio and music television. By the time the third single “Loving You” was released, the album had reached Platinum status in the United States, Germany and Canada, among other territories. The band was part of the North American Monsters of Rock tour in 1988 with bands like Dokken, Scorpions, Metallica and Van Halen.

The first 500 copies of the Music On Vinyl reissue are individually numbered and pressed on purple vinyl!

THE BEATLES’ ORIGINAL MONO STUDIO ALBUMS REMASTERED AT ABBEY ROAD DIRECTLY FROM THE ANALOGUE MASTERS FOR VINYL RELEASE

180-Gram LPs Available September 8th 2014, Individually and in a Limited 14-LP Boxed Edition with Hardbound Book

The Beatles in mono:  This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960s, when mono was the predominant audio format.  Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary.  On September 8 (September 9 in North America), The Beatles’ nine U.K. albums, the American-compiled Magical Mystery Tour, and the Mono Masters collection of non-album tracks will be released in mono on 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork.

Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.

Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles’ albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s.

The book is illustrated with many rare studio photos of The Beatles, fascinating archive documents, and articles and advertisements sourced from 1960s publications.

The Beatles In Mono:  Available individually and collected in a limited 14-LP boxed edition, accompanied by an exclusive 108-page hardbound book.

Mortals - Cursed to See the Future

Cursed To See The Future is the debut LP by NYC power trio MORTALS.  MORTALS debut is a blackened slab of heavy metal full of filthy riffs, grooves and growls equal parts High On Fire and Darkthrone propelled by the guitarwork of Elizabeth Cline and the vox of Lesley Wolf.  Having spent the past 2 years criss-crossing the country demolishing clubs and building a rabid grass roots fanbase, the world should prepare for the one of the heaviest debut LPs in recent memory.

Moby Grape - Moby Grape '69

Moby Grape followed the expansiveness of 1968’s Wow with an unadorned, back-to-basics sound on this, their fourth long-player. Bob Mosley’s understated vocal makes the ballad “It’s a Beautiful Day Today” one of the great Grape tracks, Peter Lewis’ stately “I Am Not Willing” is still a stunner and “Trucking Man” and “Ooh Mama Ooh” show that nobody could rock a shuffle like guitarist Jerry Miller and company. Most of ’69 was recorded as a quartet, with Skip Spence having just left the band. His parting gift, “Seeing,” is an alternately tender and tough tab of psychedelia that prefigures his rightly touted solo album, Oar.

Paper Garden - Paper Garden

Sgt. Pepper taught a lot of bands to play in 1967, including New York’s Paper Garden, whose absorption of the Fab Four’s Summer of Love statement came out on Musicor Records the following year. What Paper Garden can’t match in terms of the Beatles’ sophistication they make up for in ambition, as exhibited on the harpsichord-enhanced pop genius of “Lady’s Man,” orchestrated gems like “Way Up High,” the fuzz-pop-psych of “I Hide,” and Eastern grooves on “Man Do You” and “Raining.” With influences of the early Bee Gees and Brill Building pop also shading the proceedings, the album’s kaleidoscopic essence permeates every note — right down to the ultra-cool color-burst cover likely drawn under a pseudonym by Australian artist Martin Sharp of Disraeli Gears fame. That brilliant art can be viewed again in its full-size glory on this beautiful RTI 180 gram vinyl edition, mastered from the original Musicor reels by Bob Irwin.

Pre-Order White Reaper

From the increasingly fertile DIY scene of Louisville, KY, emerges White Reaper – an incandescent power trio who is ready and willing to blow out eardrums far and wide.

The band – formed by Tony Esposito (vocals/guitar) and twin brothers Nick (drums) and Sam Wilkerson (bass) -- combines sparkling hooks and fluid, fluttering rhythms to create psychedelia-tinged garage punk that make heads bob without sacrificing an ounce of sonic bite.

Having cut their teeth playing a number of raucous local and regional shows that left everyone's ears ringing and no pores devoid of sweat, the group is ready to unleash their eponymous debut EP -- a six-song blitzkrieg that traces the band's present and future. While dingy and jangly single "Conspirator" scratches the itch left behind by Jay Reatard, infectious stand outs "Cool" and “Funn” will undoubtedly make the ears of the Ty Segall/Oh Sees sect perk up.

FORCE OF DARKNESS - Darkness Revelation

Once again, HELLS HEADBANGERS presses a modern underground gem onto the unholiest of formats, vinyl: FORCE OF DARKNESS' nuclear-powered second album, Darkness Revelation! Formed in 2002 in cult metal hotbed Chile, FORCE OF DARKNESS have been patiently perfecting their craft across a number of splits and demos, but it was 2010's Darkness Revelation where the power-trio really came into their own. On one hand, the influences across Darkness Revelation are clear as day - classic Sarcofago, Kreator, Vulcano, and Sodom, all 1986 vintage - but on the other, more important hand, FORCE OF DARKNESS know how to blacken the night with absolutely feral execution and immediately memorable songs brimming with everything that makes black/death so timeless. And at a lean 'n' mean 45 minutes, it's the perfect length to get in, get out, and DESTROY everything in its path. Now for the first time on vinyl LP and available again on CD, witness Darkness Revelation!

OUT NOW ON HELLS HEADBANGERS: Pressed on traditional black vinyl and purple vinyl with black splatter.

Sneeze - Wilt

Boston-based trio Sneeze are back with their sophomore album, Wilt. Taking their signature neo-grunge dynamics to a more mature and cohesive tone than its predecessor I Am Going To Kill Myself, which was released on the band’s own label Midnight Werewolf in 2012. In this material the band explores the same depths and caliber in what you would find in the likes of Nirvana’s Nevermind. Still storming out of the gates with that disheveled and anguished exterior but also piggybacking a profusion of emotions that hold enormous weight. Warm, heavy but also sustaining that pop sensibility. Which only a few can execute that combination correctly.

Recorded on November 15th with Justin Pizzoferrato at Sonelab (Dinosaur Jr., California X, Sonic Youth). Artwork and layout by John Jr of Dark Arts Doom Crew. Limited 12″ vinyl comes with digital download of album.

Old Wounds - From Where We Came Is Where We'll Rest

On From Where We Came…, these young bucks from New Jersey breathe new life into the crushing, exhilarating vibe once wielded by bands like Turmoil, Disembodied, Indecision, and Buried Alive. A trio consisting of bassist/vocalist Kevin Iavaroni, guitarist/vocalist Zak Kessler, and drummer Brandon Gallagher, the under-21 crew seek to revitalize the metallic hardcore scene that boomed before their time — but this is no mere retro action, this is pure passion. Recorded at Developing Nations in Baltimore, Maryland by Kevin Bernsten (Full Of Hell, Pulling Teeth, Magrudergrind) and mastered by Dan Randal at Mammoth Sound. Comes with digital download card.

Since forming under the name Girlfriends in 2009, the Boston trio has released a string of cassettes and 7”s full of fuzzy garage, frantic jangle pop, and scrappy post-punk on various labels (including band members’ own imprints). The band’s myriad of influences reference touchstones like Josef K, The Feelies, Jonathan Richman, Billy Childish, and The Fall.
