Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at NewOnVinyl

JUDAS PRIEST - SAD WINGS OF DESTINY -REISSUE--ORANGE VINYL

Sad Wings of Destiny is the second album by the English heavy metal group Judas Priest, released in 1976. It is considered the album where Judas Priest consolidated their sound and image, and songs such as "Victim of Changes" and "The Ripper" became live standards.

Noted for its riff-heavy heavy metal sound and Halford's soaring vocals, the album displays a wide variety of styles, moods, and textures, inspired by an array of groups such as Queen, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath. Centrepiece "Victim of Changes" is a long track featuring heavy riffing trading off with powerful, high-pitched vocals; extended leads; and a slow, moody breakdown toward the end. "Tyrant" and "The Ripper" are short, dense, high-powered rockers with many parts and changes. Riffs and solos dominate "Genocide", "Island of Domination", and "Deceiver", and the band finds more laid-back moments in the crooning piano-backed "Epitaph" and the moody "Dreamer Deceiver".

Description by UK Music Magazine 'Louder Than War' “Full of infectious beats and atmospheric, retro-futuristic synths, the score is a further achievement from composer Reitzell, who has previously written music for the highly-rated U.S drama series HANNIBAL as well as working on multiple scores with acclaimed director Sofia Coppola, the latter of which has featured collaborations with French band AIR and Kevin Shields of famed alt-rock band MY BLOODY VALENTINE.”

SOUNDTRACK (OST) - BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW

JAGJAGUWAR & Death Waltz Recording Company are proud and excited to release a true masterpiece into the world with the soundtrack to Panos Cosmatos’ BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW. Posited as a “lost film” of the 1980s, the picture is inspired by classic dystopian fiction and the obscure SF movies one used to see lining the shelves of the local video store. As such, the brilliant soundtrack by Sinoia Caves – aka composer, Jeremy Schmidt, blends seamlessly amongst its iconic influences; Tangerine Dream, Wendy Carlos, and of course John Carpenter, with the latter’s mark heard on the oppressive synth percussion of the main titles and the evocative melodies heard throughout.

Schmidt’s score is many things – haunting, uncompromising, intense – but is always a fascinating listen. Incorporating touchstone elements such as mellotron choirs, glacial analogue synthesizer pads and arpeggiators, Schmidt artfully navigates the various sonic sensibilities of the 70s-80s genre aesthetic. What emerges from this schematic realm of the ‘almost familiar’ evolves and manifests as a work of striking originality, an ominously beautiful, otherworldly and terrifying score. Simply put, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW is an astounding piece of work and must not be missed. Do you read me?

The offical soundtrack of Beyond the Black Rainbow. Limited edition on clear vinyl with red smoke effect. Release on 2014-09-02.

OOIOO - Gamel

OOIOO has always created a musical language all its own. Under the leadership of Yoshimi, also a founding member of Boredoms, the group has recorded six albums that have subverted expectations and warped perceptions of what constitutes pop and experimental music. Four years of work went into making Gamel, their bold new album inspired by the Javanese style of gamelan and the first new music from Yoshimi in over five years. Gamelan is an ancient form that has inspired a great many composers and musicians over the past century, from Erik Satie and Claude Debussy to Mouse on Mars and Sun City Girls. The introduction of this traditional form transformed the group into a super tribe, side-stepping the road between the past and the future. Their focus is not to replicate these ancient styles, but to incorporate them into their consistently inventive, constantly shifting musical frameworks. They take their love of indigenous music into an entirely new dimension by freely weaving organic and electric tones into a vivid tapestry, employing their keen sense of color and texture.

While previous OOIOO albums have been largely studio creations, Gamel is the most accurate portrayal of the band’s overwhelming, forceful live presence they have released yet. Yoshimi leads her minimalistic rhythm ensemble by making quick, impulsive shifts in tone and attack, the group acting as one mind under her expert instruction. While the gamelan elements will be brand new to many listeners, the band offsets the bizarre with familiar, at times even nostalgic and childlike, melodies. Gamel is euphoric, bursting at the seams with an exhilarating frenzy that is universal yet uniquely their own. OOIOO’s music is reflected in the ear of the beholder, with each listener taking away something different.

Yoshimi began her music career in 1986 playing drums in UFO or Die with vocalist Eye, and later joined him in the revolutionary noise-pop group Boredoms. Her explosive drum performances captivated audiences and even inspired Wayne Coyne to name a now-famous Flaming Lips album in her honor. While the band’s tours of the United States are infrequent, they are as The New York Times has stated, transcendent.

Deluxe 2xLP edition is pressed on virgin vinyl and packaged in a gatefold jacket with free download card.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

upcoming releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

TEN YEARS AFTER - UNDEAD

Undead is a live album by Ten Years After, recorded live at the small jazz club, Klooks Kleek, in London on May 14th 1968, The show combined Blues, Boogie and Jazz playing that merged more traditional Rock and Roll with 50s-style Jump Blues. Alvin Lee, Leo Lyons, Chick Churchill and Ric Lee together became one of the biggest club attractions in England. Their music knows no compromise - it's straight down the line. It's loud and tough - but honest. Undead captures the excitement and raw energy of the band's live performances.

When originally released in 1968, the album was only 38 minutes long, due to the timing constraints of vinyl. As the band's tunes were all pretty long, there were only five tracks on the original issue. The expanded edition of Undead contains 4 additional tracks of the performance and is available on vinyl for the very first time.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • Remastered audio
  • Notes by Ric Lee of Ten Years After
  • Etched D-Side
  • Expanded vinyl edition: contains material previously unissued on vinyl

REPLACEMENTS - ALL SHOOK DOWN

All Shook Down is the seventh and final studio album by the band The Replacements, released in 1990. The band, hailing from Minneapolis, started out in 1979, and are considered pioneers of Alternative Rock, influencing a variety of acts along the way. Their influences ranged from The Rolling Stones, The Faces, Slade, Lou Reed and The Beatles to Punk rock bands such as The Ramones, Johnny Thunders, Dead Boys and The Clash.

At the time All Shook Down was released, the band consisted of guitarist and vocalist Paul Westerberg, bass guitarist Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars, added by lead guitarist Slim Dunlap. This album was originally intended to be Westerberg's solo artist debut. As a result, numerous session and side musicians including The Velvet Underground's John Cale performed on All Shook Down's 13 songs, supplemented by the three other band members.

"Merry Go Round" was the band's most successful Modern Rock Tracks single, reaching #1 for four non-consecutive weeks. The album also received a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. 180 gram audiophile vinyl and Insert

ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS - ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY

All This Useless Beauty is the seventeenth studio album by English Rock singer and songwriter Elvis Costello, originally released in 1996. The album peaked at No. 28 on the UK album chart, and at No. 53 on the Billboard 200. It is his final album with his long-standing backing band The Attractions.

In its original conception, the album was to be a set of songs written for other artists, entitled A Case For Song, with backing by a diverse array of musicians. Instead, Costello chose to record the songs himself with The Attractions. For instance, "Complicated Shadows" had been intended for Johnny Cash, and "Why Can't A Man Stand Alone?" for Sam Moore, and the B-side opens with his collaboration with Paul McCartney: "Shallow Grave".

Four songs previously released by others also made it to the final track listing: "The Other End Of The Telescope" was co-written with Aimee Mann;  "You Bowed Down" was recorded by Roger McGuinn; "All This Useless Beauty" and "I Want To Vanish" was recorded by June Tabor. 180 gram audiophile vinyl and Insert

'Overjoyed' New LP from Half Japanese

One of the most influential bands in rock history, Half Japanese was founded in the bedroom of brothers Jad and David Fair in 1974. Ignoring musical conventions like chords, rhythms, melody, and song structure, the brothers pioneered DIY and Lo-Fi punk aesthetics simply by being themselves. Passionate, fearless, and relentlessly unique, they self-recorded and self-released by mailing out cassettes with handmade packaging, pressing their own vinyl, and brazenly marketing their music with bizarre magazine ads. This unbridled enthusiasm for the act of creating rock music led them to record dozens of amazing records (including the classic albums "1/2 Gentleman/Not Beasts" and "Charmed Life"), and to inevitably influence countless artists such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, Kurt Cobain, and many many more.

Their first album in 13 years, "Overjoyed", shows the band's aggressiveness as well as its friendly charisma. Produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, the 12 songs on "Overjoyed" are unlike anything in the bands catalog, each unapologetically positive and surprisingly accessible. "Overjoyed" contains a deep purity, exceptionally rare amongst "reunion albums". They neither attempt to recreate their old sound, nor are they aware of current musical trends and conventions. As a result they sidestep common pitfalls and create something new, interesting, and needed.

Holy Sons - The Fact Facer

Holy Sons is Emil Amos, a musician whose chameleonic tendencies and technical versatility has lead to him becoming an in demand multi-instrumentalist as a founding member of Grails and Lilacs & Champagne, as well as a member of Om and a hired gun for Jandek, to name a few.

The songs on The Fact Facer creep up on the listener, their fiercely addictive melodies unraveling slowly and purposefully. Jumping smoothly between many facets of Amos’ songwriting, the album does much to establish him as a talented multi-instrumentalist. From the lysergic leads of “Selfish Thoughts”” to the Danny Kirwan referencing solos of “Transparent Powers” and the skillful acoustic flourishes of “The Fact Facer,” Amos proves himself as adept and creative a guitarist as he is a drummer. It is telling that Amos has built up two Holy Sons bands simultaneously: one based in Portland and one based in New York. Wherever the wind takes him, there are musicians willing to pick up their instruments and follow his lead.

LP version is pressed on virgin vinyl and packaged in a jacket with spot UV gloss printing on cover and a free download coupon. While supplies last mailorder customers will be treated to a purple vinyl edition (LIMITED TO ONLY 500). CD version is packaged in a 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package.

This is a pre-order for September 23rd street date. All orders containing The Fact Facer will ship on or slightly before the street date.

audint (kode9 & toby heys) - Martial Hauntology

'Martial Hauntology' is the groundbreaking first release on AUDiNT Records - the sonic research cell staffed by Toby Heys and Steve Goodman (Kode 9) engaged in 3rd Ear Research. The pair have both independently worked in this field - Goodman via Hyperdub, the autonomous CCRU unit and his 'Sonic Warfare' book; Heys thru his audio-visual praxis and as research fellow at Manchester Uni. They were both recruited by AUDiNT in 2008 to investigate the properties of newly emergent super-directional speakers when coupled with infrasonic devices. Four years in the making, 'Martial Hauntology' collates that research for the first time, as well as outlining the history of AUDINT itself, offering a tortuous, hyperstitional account of frequency-based phenomenon in military and civilian spheres over the preceding 70 years. It explores the involvement of Alan Turing and The Ghost Army's pioneering use of 3 deck mixes in World War 2, thru the chopper-mounted loud-speaker terror of the US army's Wandering Soul campaign in Vietnam, to the deployment of High Frequencies as "teen repellants”, the military applications of muzak and the current use of hyper-directional LRAD speakers in Iraq.

Alongside the 112-page book you’ll find a vinyl record encoded with two 20 minute chapters sound-scaped and written by Goodman and Heys and narrated by Ms.Haptic, presenting a unique reading of the affects of sound on 20th and 21st century populations. The first side of the LP features a mid-20th century spectral research mission across the Atlantic assisted by an illicit truth serum, while Side 2 goes on a ghost hunt in the vinyl recycling plants of South China. We can trace echoes of the project in the cultural, socioeconomic and geopolitical studies of Sadie Plant's 'Writing On Drugs' book and Adam Curtis' far-reaching documentaries as much as the speculative sonic fiction of Kodwo Eshun's 'More Brilliant Than The Sun', Graham Hancock's unconventional theories on altered states of consciousness, metaphysics and civilisation, and even the emergent field of archaeoacoustics. The project seems intended to galvanise and better help us understand the liminal realms of sonic perception where truth is often stranger than fiction, steeling us to a foreboding future of state-sponsored subliminal manipulation and psycho-acoustic warfare...

**Kode9 and Toby Heys' sonic research unit delves into untold sonic histories in this custom triple gatefold containing 112-page book, 180g clear vinyl record, and six 12" x 12" Dead Record Archive cards.

None of these components are available to buy separately and the Box Set has been made in a limited run of just 256 copies, never to be re-pressed. Artwork by Optigram. Shipping for a release date of july 21st**

Spring 1990 (The Other One) Box

Some consider Spring 1990 the last great Grateful Dead tour. That it may be. In spite of outside difficulties and downsides, nothing could deter the Grateful Dead from crafting lightness from darkness. They were overwhelmingly triumphant in doing what they came to do, what they did best — forging powerful explorations in music. Yes, it was the music that would propel their legacy further, young fans joining the ranks with veteran Dead Heads, Jerry wondering "where do they keep coming from?" — a sentiment that still rings true today, a sentiment that offers up another opportunity for an exceptional release from a tour that serves as transcendental chapter in the Grateful Dead masterpiece.

With Spring 1990 (The Other One), you'll have the chance to explore another eight complete shows from this chapter, the band elevating their game to deliver inspired performances of concert staples (“Tennessee Jed” and “Sugar Magnolia”), exceptional covers (Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and the band’s last performance of the Beatles’ “Revolution”) and rare gems (the first “Loose Lucy” in 16 years) as well as many songs from Built To Last, which had been released the previous fall and would become the Dead’s final studio album. Also among the eight is one of the most sought-after shows in the Dead canon: the March, 29, 1990 show at Nassau Coliseum, where Grammy®-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis sat in with the group. The entire second set is one continuous highlight, especially the breathtaking version of “Dark Star.”

For those of you who are keeping track, this release also marks a significant milestone as now, across the two Spring 1990 boxed sets, Dozin At The Knick, and Terrapin Limited, the entire spring tour of 1990 has been officially released, making it only the second Grateful Dead tour, after Europe 1972, to have that honor.

Digital downloads will be made available on release date.

What's Inside:
•144-page paperback book with essays by Nicholas G. Meriwether and Blair Jackson
•A portfolio with three art prints by Jessica Dessner
 • Replica ticket stubs and backstage passes for all eight shows

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 7, 2014

This week we pick up right where we left off last week, with states from N to W whose name is also found in the name of a recording artist. Even if there are many examples, as with New York and Texas, space is limited and we therefore will list only one.

NEBRASKA: Larry Hobbs and the Nebraska Playboys (Nearly every state had a Playboys group. In the land of Cornhuskers, Larry and his gang revived Wayne Newton's 1967, "Love of the Common People," for Rene Records)

NEVADA: Nevada Slim (This third generation Nevadan, along with wife Cimarron Sue, have been a performing duo since 1999, and their discography includes numerous albums of traditional western music)

NEW HAMPSHIRE: New Hampshire Notables/New Hampshire Gentlemen (Both group names appear on the same 1984 EP, thus ensuring the Granite State is represented)

NEW JERSEY: New Jersey Mass Choir (This gospel throng had a 1985 regional hit — N.J. being one of those regions — with "I Want to Know What Love Is," the No. 1 hit for Foreigner a few months earlier)

NEW MEXICO: New Mexico ("Sportsman" is one of three tracks they contributed to the "Bar Noise" compilation)

NEW YORK: New York City (One of numerous "New York" groups, but chosen based on their 1973 Top 20 hit, "I'm Doin' Fine Now")

NORTH CAROLINA: North Carolina Ramblers (Recorded some very collectible [$200 to $300] mountain music and old-time country for Paramount and Columbia in the mid-to-late '20s)

NORTH DAKOTA: North Dakota (Male duo from the UK, best known for their single, "Reflection," on the Innovative label)

OHIO: Ohio Players (R&B mob with two No. 1 hits in the 1970s: "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster")

OKLAHOMA: Jack Tucker and His Oklahoma Playboys (Jack, with and without those Playboys, had numerous records in the 1950s and '60s, including "Surrounded By Sorrow" and "Honey Moon Trip to Mars")

OREGON: Oregon (From 1972 to 1980, Oregon made five LPs for Vanguard and four for Elektra)

PENNSYLVANIA: Pennsylvania Collegians (Featuring vocalist James Harkins, this band's total output consisted of four Elektradisk 78s in 1932)

SOUTH CAROLINA: South Carolina Quartette (Recorded very rare gospel tracks for QRS in 1928)

SOUTH DAKOTA: South Dakota All State Chorus (With Dr. James Neilson directing the orchestra and Dr. Robert Berglund the chorus on a 1966 self-titled LP)

TENNESSEE: Tennessee Ernie Ford (By far the most successful of the many "Tennessee" artists. This multi-media mega-star in the 1950s, got a huge career boost when "Sixteen Tons" sold over a million copies. His 1956 "Hymns" LP was also gold, and was on the charts for over five years)

TEXAS: Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys (Known worldwide as the King of Western Swing, mainly because he was … for over 40 years. 'Nuff said. And now we have yet another group of Playboys on the list)

UTAH: Utah Carl (A life-long Texan, Carl Beach never set foot in Utah. The inappropriate nickname came about when he was one of several singers on a live show in Texas. Somehow the confused local announcer mistakenly introduced Beach as Utah Carl. After that night, he would forever be known as Utah, a state whose borders he never crossed. Carl's most popular tune is "Sometime," a 1957 country bopper [Starday 301])

VERMONT: Vermont ("Suburban Girls" is their contribution to the 2000 Kindercore EP, "Vermont & the Mendoza Line")

VIRGINIA: Jim & Jesse and the Virginia Boys (Brothers Jim and Jesse McReynolds recorded and performed for 50 years, from 1952 until Jim's death in 2002. Their biggest hit, "Diesel on My Tail," came out in 1963)

WASHINGTON: Washingtonians (Prolific bunch during the Big Band and Dance Band era. The market for their 78s is strong, with prices in the $500 to $1,000 range. Since Washington is by far the most common state name that is also a surname, I avoided obvious choices such as Dinah; Baby; Grover; Gino; Ella; etc.)

WASHINGTON D.C.: Washington D.C.s (Not exactly a state, but this district is surrounded by them. Ironically, to find this group we had to go to the UK. Turns out there is a split album from 1965 titled "The Dave Clark Five and the Washington D.C.s" [Ember 2003], with four tracks by the DC5 and six by the other D.C.s)

WEST VIRGINIA: West Virginia (Another UK act, this one with singles from 1978 and '79 on Rox)

WISCONSIN: Kids From Wisconsin (These kids had one single that we know of, "Guess I'll Never Know," [American 5095] issued in 1975)

WYOMING: Wyoming Cowboy (Could it be any more appropriate than finding the Wyoming Cowboy on Champion? Born Charles Baker, this cowboy is remembered for two western music tunes, both issued in 1934, and both with stately titles: "Utah Carroll" (Champion 16724) and "Curly Joe [From Idaho]" Champion 16737)

IZ ZAT SO? One 45 rpm with references to a curious collection of places is "New Orleans Lunatic Mood" (G-E-M 129), by Tennessee W. Maine and His Orchestra.

Manufactured in Paris, France, one side is titled "Hindustan."

That adds up to two countries on two continents, one subcontinent, two cities, and three states … unless of course his full name is Tennessee Washington Maine, then it's four states.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SoundStageDirect

Amputechture by The Mars Volta

Amputechture is the third studio album by American progressive Rock band The Mars Volta, originally released in 2006. Produced by guitarist and songwriter Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and spearheaded by vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, the album marks the final appearance of drummer Jon Theodore, and is the first studio album to feature guitarist and sound manipulator Paul Hinojos, formerly of At The Drive-In and Sparta. The album also features Red Hot Chili Peppers’ John Frusciante on rhythm and lead guitars, whose presence leaves Rodriguez-Lopez open for more intricate work on production, which resulted in a heavy and dynamic record.

The Mars Volta remain continual contenders for the mantle of most experimental high-profile metal groups. They push the boundaries of extreme production, like with their long periods of dynamics that rise ever higher, followed by an explosion of release. Amputechture is a near-legendary release by one of the most intriguing bands in Rock.

The first 3000 copies are hand numbered and are pressed on gold/red vinyl. As a special bonus we’ve included a custom-made poster by band art designer Jared Connor, who has designed many concert posters for The Mars Volta.

Baying At The Moon by Aerosmith

This high energy show is from Aerosmith's 1978 national tour in support of their 5th album - "Draw the Line". It was broadcast live-as-it-happened on Boston's local FM station WBCN. As you would expect in the band's hometown, The Music Hall was completely sold out for this gig and the crowd was really pumped, resulting in what is regarded as the hottest performance from the boys during this outstanding tour.

Bosnian Rainbows by Bosnian Rainbows

Bosnian Rainbows is a new band featuring Omar Rodriguez Lopez (The Mars Volta, At the Drive-In), Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes), Nicci Kasper (Kudu, KRS-ONE) and Deantoni Parks (John Cale, The Mars Volta).

Since forming in the Summer of 2012, they have toured extensively in North America, Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. They made their U.S. festival debut at last September's Fun Fun Fun Fest, and appeared at Festival Vive Latino at Mexico City's Foro Sol Stadium in March 2013.

Minus The Bear - Plant of Ice

Following the success of Highly Refined Pirates' forward-thinking guitar gymnastics and Menos El Oso's groundbreaking glitch rock, Seattle's premier pop revisionists Minus The Bear dug into some of rock music's most ostentatious years for inspiration for their 2007 album, Planet of Ice. The title alone conjures images of Yes's Relayer album art, and the influence of the elder statesmen's symphonic scope can be felt throughout Planet of Ice's lush and intricate arrangements. You can also hear the band channel the ominous instrumental interplay of Lamb-era Genesis on "Dr. L'Ling", the deceptively savvy musicianship and pristine production of Steely Dan on "White Mystery", and the tightrope walk between ethereal space and pre-metal riffage of Pink Floyd's "Echoes" on "Lotus". Not that Minus The Bear completely abandoned their earlier style?elements of Menos El Oso's sample-driven technique can be heard on the lead single "Knights". But the heart of the song ultimately belongs to the haunting Fripp-esque guitar lines spliced between verses. After being out of print on record since 2010, Suicide Squeeze is proud to reintroduce Planet of Ice's creative marriage of classic motifs and modern musical wizardry with a vinyl remaster courtesy of Bernie Grundman. This 2xLP is being pressed on three different colors: Purple (1K), Ice (1K), and standard 180 gram black (1K).

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at NewOnVinyl

KING CURTIS - LIVE AT FILLMORE WEST

Live At Fillmore West is the ultimate King Curtis live album, a brilliant confirmation of the saxophonist's place in popular music. This is the stuff of Soul legends that belongs in any record collection.

The album showcases three concerts he played with his band The Kingpins at the Fillmore West venue in San Francisco in March 1971. Those nights, the group supported Soul singer Aretha Franklin, as were they her backing band. Famed for their outstanding rhythmic interplay, the group of seasoned session men featured a.o. Cornell Dupree on guitar, Billy Preston on electric organ and Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie on drums, supported by the inimitable Memphis Horns.

Curtis rips through some of the biggest hits of the day including Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)" and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love", transforming them into showcases for the group's soulful playing. Beautiful renditions of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" and "I Stand Accused" are highlights, and full-throttle rockers like "Changes" and "Memphis Soul Stew" comprise the heart of the album.

Tragically only a week after its release, Curtis was stabbed to death outside his brownstone apartment in New York following an argument with two junkies. The day after he died the album peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard 200 album chart, his greatest success as a solo artist.

The remastered audio is pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl and Side D is beautifully etched.

Merge Reissuing Teenage Fanclub's Man-Made and Shadows LP's

On August 5, Merge will reissue Teenage Fanclub’s 'Man-Made' and 'Shadows,' two critically acclaimed albums never before available on LP in the US. These reissues continue our year-long 25th anniversary series of re-releasing classic albums from our back catalog each month throughout 2014.

Teenage Fanclub released 'Man-Made,' their Merge debut, in 2005. Recorded with John McEntire in Chicago, Man-Made is described by the band as “a medium-risk experiment—to cut ourselves off from what we knew, to be in a different type of city, on a different continent, to work with John, a different type of musician, an engineer with a particular sound, and to interact with whatever equipment he had at Soma: his drums, his amplifiers, his keyboards. The plan was to be somewhere truly new and deal with it, see how it worked out. We had never made a record this way before, and the prevailing circumstances at the time, the fact that we really had nothing to lose, made doing something slightly differently seem quite appealing.”

'Shadows' followed five years later. The band reveals how the recording process differed from the previous album: “Compared with Man-Made, this is a softer isolation, surrounded by fields and emptiness, and the live room at the studio, a converted barn, is filled with our equipment all mic’d up and ready to go. This set-up is how we approached the three records leading up to Man-Made, and we feel it suits us: a residential country location, close enough to drive but with sufficient distance from home to concentrate our minds on the job at hand.”

Both albums illustrate what SPIN magazine wrote of Teenage Fanclub: “Proof that youth is a state of mind you need never outgrow.”

'Man-Made' and 'Shadows' will be released on 180-gram vinyl, and each LP will include a download of the album plus two bonus tracks. Teenage Fanclub will return to the US in July for the first time since 2010 to play the Merge 25 Festival and the River Rocks Festival in New York.

'Man-Made' bonus tracks:
"Please Stay"
"Falling Leaf"

Preorders will ship to arrive on or around the release date of August 5th.

Super Furry Animals 'Dark Days/Light Years'

The Welsh psychedelic pop legends Super Furry Animals return with 'Dark Days/Light Years,' their ninth studio album. Where previous albums have seen the band experiment with extra instrumentation, this release is full of songs based on grooves rather than ensemble composition. The band's impish sense of humor remains, though, with track titles such as 'The Very Best Of Neil Diamond' and 'Moped Eyes' standing out. Also notable is Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy's guest appearance on the Kraftwerk-inspired 'Inaugural Trams', performing a German-language rap.
