Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

new arrivals from our friends at SoundStageDirect

Last Fair Day Gone Night by Katatonia

Katatonia was formed in 1991 by Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse. Their debut album, ‘Dance of December Souls’, was released in 1993, gaining the band recognition for their eclectic brand of gothic doom/death metal & joining acts such as Paradise Lost & My Dying Bride as one of the genre’s defining bands. On future albums a newer, sleeker Katatonia sound came to the fore, starting with a streamlined & structured collection of melodic dark rock songs that became third album ‘Discouraged Ones’; the main evolution point for modern day Katatonia.

‘Last Fair Day Gone Night’ features the Swedish dark rock/metal masters at their glorious best with this electrifying set from London’s esteemed Koko venue.

Recorded during a series of special celebratory shows to mark the band’s 20th anniversary during 2011’s ‘Last Fair Day Gone Night’ tour, founding members Anders Nyström & Jonas Renkse are joined by long-time drummer Daniel Liljekvist, plus guitarist Per Eriksson & bassist Niklas Sandin, for an exhilarating evening fuelled by a rich & extensive set of Katatonia tracks both past & present. Also includes a special performance of the landmark 2001 album ‘Last Fair Deal Gone Down’ in its entirety.

The Silence In Black And White (Acoustic) by Hawthorne Heights

Hawthorne Heights will be releasing “The Silence In Black And White (Acoustic)” in celebration of the albums 10 year anniversary.

The album features all 11 tracks re-imagined for a truly unique re-release and a perfect homage to the album that put the band on the map.

“It’s hard to believe that after all these years, all these shows, and all these miles of highway, these songs still mean something to someone. It was so much fun to dive deep into these memories, and come out with fresh versions of songs that our fans have loved for years. It feels weird to think of it as an acoustic album, because it’s very much full band, as well as energetic. We tried to discover new depths; by digging into everything we have believed in all these years. We still believe in each other, we still believe in our fans, and we still believe in you.” – JT Woodruff (Vocals / Guitar)

Sardonic Wrath by Darkthrone

Darkthrone originally formed in the late 80’s as a thrash/death metal act & progressed through a period technical death and doom metal experimentation to become legends of the black metal world & one of the original leading bands of the Norwegian scene.

‘Sardonic Wrath’ was initially released in 2004 and was Darkthrone’s final album for the Moonfog Productions label. With a suitably raw sound courtesy of Lars Klokkerhaug, the album delivers a wholly grim selection of black metal greatness courtesy of Nocturno Culto and Fenriz, with a dose of pure 80s metal influence as ever coursing through their veins. Regarded as a particular highlight of Darkthrone’s Moonfog era albums, ‘Sardonic Wrath’ also features guest vocals from Apollyon of countrymen Aura Noir/Immortal.

POST-ROCK BAND ILYA SET TO RE-RELEASE LATEST ALBUM IN BLOOD (+BONUS TRACKS) ON SEPTEMBER 30

San Diego’s Beloved Band ILYA Follows-Up With Album After Eight-Year Hiatus with Tour Dates, a Renewed Sense of Purpose and a Rightful Place Next to Bands Like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Warpaint, Swans and Dead Can Dance

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOS ANGELES, CA (WEDNESDAY JULY 23, 2014) – San Diego post-rock band ILYA (IlyaMusic.bandcamp.com) have confirmed Tuesday September 30 for the re-release of their third album In Blood (+Bonus Tracks). This is the bands first album of new music in close to a decade and is already proving to be their best work yet.

In Blood is a collection of dark, beautiful songs with deep attention to dynamics and mood, and a precision-like love for the subtleties and silence too often overlooked. A culmination of sounds and words so weighted you feel crushed, yet heightened by a delicate floating layer of hope, that leaves you clawing and scratching for more. Fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Warpaint, Swans and Dead Can Dance will find themselves right at home here.

An earlier version of In Blood was released regionally in and around San Diego to much fanfare this past spring. However, this new edition adds two new bonus tracks.

Pressed on 180 gram virgin vinyl, with a beautiful full color Gatefold jacket. All vinyl purchases come with a free digital download.

ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST Announces 40th Anniversary Edition of Frank Zappa’s Apostrophe(’) on 180-Gram Vinyl

The ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST presents more freshly remastered music with the 40th Anniversary Edition of Frank Zappa’s Apostrophe(’)on audiophile quality 180-gram vinyl. Cut directly from the original quarter-inch stereo analog master tapes, the special edition of the iconic 1974 album will be released on September 30.

Featuring definitive Zappa cuts “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” and “Cosmik Debris” among its original nine tracks, Apostrophe(’)was Zappa’s highest-charting album, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard 200. The Gold-certified album has been remastered for vinyl by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering and manufactured for the world at Pallas Group in Germany.

The 40th Anniversary Edition of Apostrophe(’)continues the ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST’s ongoing commitment to the restoration of Frank Zappa’s albums on audiophile quality vinyl. Joe Travers, Vaultmaster, Zappa Archives, is working on the new LP releases with Bellman.

In 2012, when the rights to the iconic composer’s masters reverted back to Zappa Records and the ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST--headed by Zappa’s widow Gail Zappa--the family made his entire recorded catalog available on iTunes for the first time and began remastering the albums for reissue on vinyl. Presented with proper care and attention to detail, the releases honor the iconic legacy of the Composer, Guitarist, Bandleader, Filmmaker and Irrepressible Wit.

Zappa was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. The official biography: Frank Zappa, American composer, fl. 1940-1993.

Sweet Bird of Youth - The Rock*A*Teens  (reissue)

When Sweet Bird was released, the band was approaching the end of its existence. A few tours went by. 2001 turned into 2002, and the band was barely doing anything at all. Understandably. The band members all had their own lives, their own jobs, and their own destinies. The band’s final concert on New Year’s Eve ’02 wasn’t sheepish but rather a triumphant farewell. Lopez sang without his guitar on, standing on the monitors and screaming “I am the car, and I am the driver!” The crowd was as jubilant as the band.

Much like their performances back then, their body of work is a true catharsis. They were a truly homegrown band from Georgia that couldn’t possibly be mistaken for being from anywhere else. For anybody that ever wants a glimpse into what Cabbagetown was all about back then, the Rock*A*Teens’ Sweet Bird of Youth is a glorious introductory step.  —Henry H. Owings, Atlanta, January 2014

MUDHONEY - MY BROTHER THE COW LTD +7 "

Mudhoney didn’t invent grunge, but they were one of the first bands to truly define the style, and thanks to the bizarro-world logic that has defined their career, they seemed to lose interest in the stuff once you could actually make serious money playing it, ensuring that they wouldn’t have to deal with the mainstream adulation that made followers like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden into multi-platinum cash cows. By 1995, Grunge’s brief fling on the charts was pretty much over, just in time for Mudhoney to decide they liked the stuff again, and make the finest album of their career, My Brother the Cow.

Produced by Jack Endino, the album includes numerous direct references to bands that influenced Mudhoney’s sound. The song “F.D.K. (Fearless Doctor Killers)”, for example, is a reference to the Bad Brains song “F.V.K. (Fearless Vampire Killers)”. “Orange Ball-Peen Hammer” alludes to the song “Orange Claw Hammer” by Captain Beefheart, as well as containing lyrics borrowed from Led Zeppelin. “1995” is a homage to the Stooges song “1969” and also includes musical references to “L.A. Blues”, another Stooges song.

The Music On Vinyl reissue contains the promo 7” single as it was released in 1995! First pressing available as limited edition of 1000 copies on white vinyl (LP + 7”).

JOHNNY CASH - THE LEGEND OF JOHNNY CASH

The Legend of Johnny Cash is a single-disc compilation album of country music singer Johnny Cash's career. It is the first such album to contain material from Cash’s American Recordings era in addition to songs from his time at Sun and Columbia. It was released on October 25, 2005 on the Island/American/Columbia/Legacy record labels and tied to the release of the Cash biopic Walk the Line. In the wake of that film's success its sales made the compilation an overwhelming success. The album was certified Gold on 12/7/2005, Platinum on 12/14/2005 and 2x Platinum on 5/19/2006 by the RIAA. As of May 8, 2014, the album has sold 3,166,000 copies in the United States.

GRATEFUL DEAD - GRAYFOLDED

Here it is, Deadheads, the ultimate "Dark Star" is now on vinyl. Deluxe audiophile pressing cut in Toronto under the watchful ears of John Oswald. Heavy-duty triple gatefold jacket includes liner-notes by musicologist Rob Bowman featuring interviews with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Robert Hunter, plus two "time maps" which chart the source concerts of "Dark Star." Music performed by The Grateful Dead (c) Grateful Dead Productions Inc. & Ice Nine Publishing Inc.

Taken from over 100 performances of "Dark Star" recorded between 1968 and 1993 original recordings of the Grateful Dead in performance have been processed using Plunderphonic techniques - built, layered and "folded" to produce one large, new re-composed "Dark Star."

Plunderphonics is a term coined by composer John Oswald in 1985 in his essay Plunderphonics, or Audio Piracy as a Compositional Prerogative. It has since been applied to any music made by taking one or more existing audio recordings and altering them in some way to make a new composition. Plunderphonics can be considered a form of sound collage.

"Grayfolded is literally a hundred or so great nights rolled into one extraordinary extended high. Gorgeous sonic origami." - Rolling Stone

The Aislers Set "How I Learned To Write Backwards Remastered/Reissue "

The Aislers Set occupy an enviable place in the pop pantheon. Brimming with drunken romanticism, sharp pop sensibilities, and timeless melodies, The Aislers Set reveled in the history of great pop, spiking their classicist 60s-tinged tunes with pure post-punk energy and originality of bands like the Fire Engines and The June Brides. Every song is a meticulously constructed sound world, where the arrangement and instrumentation sublimely and uncannily bring each tune to completeness. Although they stopped playing and recording together by 2004 due to life commitments, their reputation has only grown; sporadic reunion shows and mini-tours have been met with rapturous response. Alas, Suicide Squeeze is proud to present the 2014 reissue of the seminal album "How I Learned To Write Backwards" remastered and resequenced by John Greenham at Infrasonic Sound in Los Angeles, and on vinyl LP again for the first time in over a decade. The band will play a select set of shows this fall, and Suicide Squeeze and Slumberland Records will be teaming up to co-release a new album of singles and rarities to be released in early 2015

The LP is available in a limited pressing of 1,000 copies on 180 gram Translucent Green Vinyl. A digital download card for MP3 is included.

Crosby, Stills & Nash - Demos (180 Gram Vinyl)

This is a 12-song collection of previously unreleased demos from 1968 to 1971. It offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the earliest days of one of rock’s most legendary partnerships including early versions of “Marrakesh Express,” “Almost Cut My air” and “Love The One You’re With.” Most tracks were recorded at the legendary Wally Heider studios. Highlights include CSN harmonizing on a January '69 take on "Marrakesh Express," Crosby and Stills on "Long Time Gone," and Crosby and Nash joined by Neil Young "Music Is Love" (a song later featured on Crosby's solo debut If I Could Only Remember My Name). This collection reaches as far back as '68 with Stills' "My Love Is A Gentle Thing," and also features his solo classic "Love The One You're With." Among the other highlights are three songs that would appear on Nash's solo debut, 1971's Songs For Beginners, including "Chicago" and "Sleep Song," and Crosby performing unaccompanied on "Almost Cut My Hair" and "Déjà Vu."

MR. BUNGLE - DISCO VOLANTE

Disco Volante is the second studio album by American experimental Rock band Mr. Bungle. Released in 1995, it is considered by many to be the most experimental of all their albums, picking up inspiration from a wide variety of musical styles including Death Metal, Techno, '50s space age Pop, musique concrète and Italian avant-garde. Faith No More's vocalist Mike Patton also uses a great number of vocal effects boxes and samples throughout the album.

The album's title refers to the name of the yacht of the same name featured in the James Bond film Thunderball. Disco Volante has been well received by critics, being called a 'totally original and new musical style, and an album that sounds like nothing that currently exists'. The track "Desert Search For Techno Allah" is described as 'a middle eastern Techno number that has to be heard to be believed.' This is a band whose sole purpose is to break all the pre-existing rules of music and doesn't think twice about taking chances.

SHOCKING BLUE - ATTILA

Formed in 1967 by former Motions guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen, Shocking Blue was joined by Cor van der Beek (drums), Klaasje van der Wal (bass) and Mariska Veres as lead vocalist. In 1969 and 1970, the group set the airwaves crackling and enjoyed a worldwide chart success with "Venus" (which incorporated the help of studio musician Cees Schrama of Casey & The Pressure Group [MOVLP1132]), followed by several other hit singles.

In 1972, they released their 6th album Attila, a solid Pop album written entirely by Van Leeuwen, anchored by Mariska's powerful vocals. Her incredible range and control is at times compared with Jefferson Airplane's singer Grace Slick. Noteworthy tracks on Attila are "Rock In The Sea", album opener "Rattler" and the moody "Wait". This album is definitely worth picking up for a comprehensive view on Holland's biggest export product's early '70s output.

The Music On Vinyl reissue contains 4 exclusive bonus tracks!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Including 4 bonus tracks: "Eve And The Apple", "When I Was A Girl", "Everything That's Mine" & "I Saw You In June"

YUSEF LATEEF - THE BLUE YUSEF LATEEF

On The Blue Yusef Lateef (1968), listeners get an amazing chapter from the late '60s, an amazing period when everything in the world of Jazz was changing. Lateef was big on concept recordings. This album examines all the different ranges of emotion contained within the blues genre. With a band that included Detroit Jazz gods Roy Brooks on drums and Kenny Burrell on guitar, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Hugh Lawson on piano, Sonny Red on alto, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, and a very young Cecil McBee on acoustic bass, you get the idea that Lateef was after something different.

Lateef performs on not only his tenor and flute, but bamboo and pneumatic flutes, tamboura, koto, and others; Lateef was exploring the outer reaches of the blues as they might appear and appeal to Eastern as well as Western cultures. The Blue Yusef Lateef is one wild album. In sound, it is the very best the '60s had to offer in terms of experimentation and accessibility. This is blues you can dance to, but also meditate to and marvel at.  On 180 gram audiophile vinyl

AIR 'MUSIC FOR MUSEUM' - EXCLUSIVE VINYL-ONLY RELEASE FROM THE VINYL FACTORY

The Vinyl Factory is excited to again collaborate AIR to release nine intoxicating new tracks on this beautiful vinyl-only limited edition - the duo's first new material since 2012.

Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin were originally commissioned to produce the soundtracks for the Palais de Beaux Arts in Lille as part of their Open Museum 2014 project. And the duo's compositions have been inspired by four contemporary artists featured in the museum – Linda Bujoli, Mathias Kiss, Xavier Veilhan and Yi Zhou – whose artwork is included in the limited edition.

These stirring soundscapes will be played from eight loudspeakers suspended from the glass roof in the atrium at the very heart of the museum, immersing visitors in a three-dimensional musical experience – using the software SPACES developed at the INA-GRM by Emmanuel Favreau – in which the music slows down, speeds up and responds to the characteristics of the space.

Having previously collaborated with The Vinyl Factory for their re-imagined soundtrack to classic French film Le Voyage Dans La Lune, AIR have built a reputation for an arresting, cinematic sound, and list soundtracks for The Virgin Suicides and Lost In Translation in their impressive discography.

Speaking of the decision to invite AIR to reinvent the works of the museum, curator Régis Cotentin says: “This choice was a fairly obvious way: the music of AIR inspires mental images, suggests a fantasy film… This is music that creates images and stimulates the imagination.”

* Nine new experimental and ambient tracks by AIR
* Available exclusively on this vinyl-only release
* Two 180-gram clear vinyl records
* Bespoke gatefold sleeve
* Two printed inner sleeves
* Oversized fold-out duotone poster
* Limited edition of 1000 copies worldwide

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 14, 2014

DEAR JERRY: I've come up with a fun trivia contest for our next Baby Boomer Club's get-together, but first I need some help.

I will let them hear "Do You Remember These" by the Statler Brothers, but the only notes they take must be mental ones. Then they'll have five minutes to write down however many of the things they can recall hearing in the song.

The one with the most correct items wins.

Because I either can't understand the lyrics or am merely unfamiliar with some of the items, I would like an accurate list.
—Katherine Upton, St. Cloud, Minn.

DEAR KATHERINE: Since the challenge is to identify the specific items, I will list them without additional lyrics that I feel are unessential for your purpose.

For example, one complete description is "aviator caps with flaps that button down," but for this game they need only jot down "aviator caps."

Have you thought of a way to keep the members of your club from reading this week's column BEFORE the game's afoot?

For things that may not be immediately recognized, such as Pepsi-Cola, I'll add a brief note. Here we go, in the order each is heard in "Do You Remember These":

Saturday morning serials (TV shows)
Fly paper (catches flies)
Penny loafers (shoes)
Lucky Strikes (cigarettes)
Flat tops (hair style)
Sock hops (check your shoes at the door)
Studebaker (automobile)
Pepsi Cola
Cigar bands (wrapped around cigars, but worn as rings by kids)
Nose Plugs (for underwater swimming)
Aviator caps
Dixie Cups (with collectible lids picturing movie stars)
Knickers (baggy knee-length pants)
The Hit Parade (radio-TV program)
Grape Tru-Ade (fruit juice)
Sadie Hawkins Dance (girls invite the boys)
Pedal pushers (pants)
Ducktail hair (style)
Pegged pants (rolled up at bottom)
Howdy Doody (famous marionette)
Tutti-Frutti (flavor and hit song)
Seamed hosiery
James Dean
Sunday movies
Senior Prom
Rock and Roll
Cracker Jack prize (something in the box besides a crunchy snack)
The boogey man (scarier than the boogie man)
Lemonade stands
Tonsillectomies
Indian burn (red skin on forearm caused by someone twisting it in opposite directions simultaneously)
Cigarette loads (gag item that explodes when someone lights up)
Secret codes
Lucky Stars (retail purchase gimmick, similar to green stamps)
Boat neck shirts (extra wide horizontal neckline)
Fender skirts (wheel covers)
Crinoline petticoats
Root beer float (root beer with ice cream)
Moon hubcaps
Heel taps (for shoes)
Dancing close
Little Moron jokes
Cooties (make believe bugs in the hair)
Captain Midnight (radio-TV character)
Ovaltine (chocolate flavored powder to mix with milk)
The Whip (carnival ride)
Charles Atlas Course (mail-order body building kit)
Roy Roger's horse (a.k.a.,Trigger)
The Shadow (radio show)
Clark Gable
Frog in the arm (knuckle thump to the bicep)
Loud mufflers (auto part, not clothing)
Pitching woo (flirting)
Going steady (exclusive relationship)
Veronica and Betty (comic book characters)
White bucks (shoes, especially Pat Boone's)
Blue Suede Shoes
Knock-knock jokes

This next list may also be helpful. It is a list of expressions and references in "Do You Remember These" that have no direct tie-in to a product, person, or specific item

"Daddy's socks rolled down"
"Judy's mom" (we don't know Judy and we don't know her mom)
"Stars in your eyes"
"Ask daddy for the keys" (to borrow the family car)
"Wait your turn" (no cutting in the line)
"Four foul balls you're out" (in pickup baseball)
"Mum's the word" (don't tell anyone)
"A dirty bird" (a rascal or a weasel)
"He's a real gone cat" (cool dude)

Well, Baby Boomers, do you remember all of these?

DEAR JERRY: Entertainment News reported that, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Miranda Lambert's first five albums debuted on Billboard's Top Country albums chart at No. 1, making her the only one "in the chart's 50-year history" to do that.

I feel it is a misrepresentation to compare SoundScan data to the pre-scan era, which is about half of those 50 years.

Isn't that like comparing apples to oranges?
—Henry Gibbs, Jackson, Miss.

DEAR HENRY: I don't think so. At least apples and oranges are both rounded, edible, tree-born fruits, with something in common.

Calculating record sales before and during the SoundScan era (May 1991) is more like apples and aardvarks.

The worldwide accessibility and on-demand delivery provided by the Net make it quite easy for a single or complete album to debut at No. 1. It is the rule rather than the exception.

We have seen this repeatedly when talent show contestants on shows such as The Voice and American Idol are No. 1 with something they first sang the night before.

The ability to purchase instantly, even in your underwear, is a far cry from earlier times when one actually had to get dressed and go shopping for the music they wanted.

Obviously, the accuracy of electronic scanning is far superior to earlier methods, but that is not the issue. It boils down to apples and aardvarks, meaning achievements of the digital era should only be compared to others from the same era.

IZ ZAT SO? Need some numbers to comprehend how different things have been in recent years regarding albums that debut at No. 1?

Looking at the last 100 albums reaching No. 1 on Billboard, covering exactly two years (July 2012 - July 2014), 96 of those debuted at No. 1. Yup, 96 – and that is not a misprint!

Only four percent fell a little short of that mark.

Throughout the vinyl LP era (1948-1990), debuting at No. 1 was practically impossible. The only exception immediately coming to mind is Elton John's "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" (June 7, 1975).

Making the jump to No. 1 in the second week on the chart did happen a few times in the mid-'60s, primarily with the Beatles and the Monkees.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SoundStageDirect

No Coast - Braid

This fourth studio album from the revered, seminal post-hardcore band is their first in fully 16 years and follows their 2011 EP, Closer to Closed. The album was heralded by a 2013 split single with Balance & Composure, which saw the band's trademark angular, emotional, yet melodic sound bolstered by powerful contemporary production. ~ John D. Buchanan, Rovi

From Parts Unknown  - Every Time I Die

Buffalo’s magnificently brutal metallic punk ensemble Every Time I Die is set to unleash From Parts Unknown. The new album was produced by hard music legend Kurt Ballou, guitarist of Converge, who has helmed recent buzz albums from Kvelertak, Nails, and High On Fire, and offers an unrelenting onslaught of ingeniously composed and furiously executed cathartic hardcore. This is the band’s highly anticipated follow up to 2012’s raging masterwork Ex Lives. From the syncopated chaos of the opening salvo “The Great Secret” to the melodic mosh of “Old Light” – as close as ETID have ever come to a radio-friendly unit shifter – From Parts Unknown sees Every Time I Die pushing the limits of their own sound.

LP Contains CD Of Full Album

Another Day In Paradise - Strung Out (reissue)

The Strung Out experience should ultimately begin with this, their debut, album. While still an astounding 13 songs of melodical fury, it often shows the youth of the band.

The listener is floored from the get-go by 'Population Control, and the rest of the album refuses to let you up on your feet. Aggressive, speed-driven and catchy the whole way through, but Strung Out's metal influence pokes through often with heavy palm-muting and shredding solos. The drumming is spectacular as always, however, it is interesting to listen the the chronological growth in Jordan Burns' talent. He was good then, but he is leaps and bounds ahead of this album now. This is one of the first records that defined the new, talented melodo-speed punk sound, and Strung Out would continue leading the genre in the years to come.

Reigning Sound - Shattered

Shattered will be Reigning Sound’s first album for Merge and the first full LP by the group since 2009’s Love and Curses.

The band’s principal songwriter/member is Greg Cartwright, who’s been leading the shifting cast of characters since 2001. You may be familiar with some of the band’s work, as this album is preceded by five studio efforts as well as numerous EPs and live records. Or perhaps some of Greg’s other projects have been on your musical radar: The Oblivians, Parting Gifts, Compulsive Gamblers, 68 Comeback, Deadly Snakes, Detroit Cobras.

Regardless, as far as Reigning Sound is concerned, this is as good a place to start as any because through many line-up changes and mood swings, the central, constant feature is the way Greg writes songs. This particular embodiment of the band includes longtime keyboardist Dave Amels, who joined the band seven years ago when Reigning Sound recorded an album, consisting mostly of Cartwright’s songs, with former Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss.

Dave proved to be key in putting together the current line-up as well. About three years ago, Greg was asked to make a promotional EP for Scion. Recordings were set to take place in Nashville where he had lined up two local friends to round out the band, but as fate would have it, both had to bow out at the last minute. Luckily, Mike Catanese, Benny Trokan, and Mikey Post—Dave Amels’ bandmates in Brooklyn soul group The Jay Vons—were up for the task. The four flew to Nashville, learned the songs, and recorded them with Greg in a couple of days. Thus was born the group that you hear on Shattered. They’ve been touring and playing together ever since, and Shattered proves that the musical union is both exciting and consistent for fans of Cartwright’s songwriting.

The album was recorded at Daptone’s Brooklyn studio (where drummer Mikey works in the office) and masterfully engineered by Wayne Gordon. The recordings are warm and punchy, a mixed bag of rockers, ballads, and something in between. There are only 11 songs on the album, but the band reckons it’s just right.

LP includes a coupon for a full download.

Caribou - Our Love

You reach a point in life where the question of how to stay at the top of your game looms, with the only real solution being: you change the game. Our Love, the new album from Caribou, is the sound of Dan Snaith doing just that. Our Love, due October 7 on Merge Records, is the fifth studio album from Caribou.

Our Love is formed around a mixture of digital pop production, hip hop-inspired beats, muted house basslines, and a love of shuffling garage that can be traced all the way back to the time of Start Breaking My Heart – all of which are, of course, filtered through Dan’s own unique perspective. The warm analog sounds of classic soul should not be overlooked either, for they weave themselves most intensely into the record’s DNA. In fact, Our Love is probably Caribou’s most soulful record to date, with tracks like “Back Home” whose heartfelt lyrics – dealing in tired relationships and a weary kind of love – and organic nature cut through the bubbling synths and blissful euphoria of their synthetic constructions. It’s not all downbeat of course; while some thoughts linger on mortality, loss, and letting go, there is always an element of celebration.

Having followed up his Polaris Prize-winning 2007 record Andorra with the universally adored Swim in 2010 (selling nearly 175,000 copies worldwide and being named Album of the Year by Rough Trade, Mixmag, and Resident Advisor while also hitting The Guardian, Pitchfork, Spin, and Mojo’s Top 20), Dan has spent the intervening four years touring the world, bringing not only the sounds of Caribou to the stage but proving his immeasurable worth as a DJ with epic 7½-hour-long sets. In 2012, Caribou were personally invited to join Radiohead on the road while Dan released his first album under the guise of his dancefloor-loving pseudonym Daphni to widespread critical acclaim. Following the shape-shifting sounds of JIAOLONG and the brightly textured, fluid constructions of Swim – both inward-looking records in their own way – Dan withdrew to the basement once more to work on Caribou’s next opus. Only he didn’t: Our Love isn’t the sound of isolated creation but the sound of Dan at his most connected – with love for his listeners, his collaborators, and those closest to him.

Preorders will ship to arrive on or around the release date of October 7. LP includes a coupon for a full download.

from our friends at Relapse

Myrkur - Myrkur

Emerging from the darkness of Scandinavia comes the much anticipated debut ep by one-woman black metal band MYRKUR.  Combining the rawness of second wave black metal bands like Ulver and Darkthrone with a natural sonic, ethereal beauty, MYRKUR has created a wholly unique perspective on the genre.  With a distinct sense of Nordic isolation Myrkur’s debut is a feminine yet definitively brutal record that has burst onto the scene like a Valkyrie into battle.

Pissed Jeans Shallow Being Reissues Via SubPop

Power-dirge from Pennsylvania. Pissed Jeans are noisy as a motherfucker and proud of it on this, their first full length, which sounds like a big pile of mud and broken glass ripping through your stereo speakers in the most killer way imaginable.

For the first time in years, Shallow is getting reissued on vinyl, and to make that as exciting and incentivized as we can, it’s also been completely remastered, and now includes a bonus 7” reproduction of their first single included in the LP sleeve (a download code for those songs is included in the CD version).

All customers who pre-order the LP version of Shallow will receive the limited, “Loser Edition” of the album on colored vinyl.
