Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 18, 2014

DEAR JERRY: It's been 50 years but I seem to recall hearing that when the Beatles topped both the singles and LPs charts simultaneously, in 1964, that it had never been done before.

Do I have this right or are there other details that I've forgotten?
—Doyle Sanders, Springfield, Ore.

DEAR DOYLE: I can't say if you have forgotten anything, since I don't know precisely what you heard in 1964, but there are other factors to consider.

As stated above, the statement is not accurate. However, wording it this way would make it true: the Beatles were "the first group (four or more members)" to do so.

This clears the way for one trio and four solo artists who preceded them in this regard.

Before the Fab Four accomplished this relatively uncommon feat (February 15, 1964), only nine times — in the first 15 years of both formats (1949-1963) — did the same act rank No. 1 for both LP and single sales, for at least one week.

With date, name (if not obvious as part of the album title), their No. 1 LP and 45, they are:

May 5, 1956: "Elvis Presley" / "Heartbreak Hotel"
Dec. 8, 1956: "Elvis" / "Love Me Tender"
July 29, 1957: Elvis Presley "Loving You" / "Loving You" and "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear"
Dec. 16, 1957: "Elvis' Christmas Album" / "Jailhouse Rock" (also the No. 1 45 EP at the time)
Nov. 24, 1958: "The Kingston Trio" / "Tom Dooley"
Dec. 19, 1960: Elvis Presley "G.I. Blues" / "Are You Lonesome To-Night"
June 23, 1962: Ray Charles "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" / "I Can't Stop Loving You"
August 24, 1963: "Little Stevie Wonder, the 12 Year Old Genius" / "Fingertips Part 2"
Dec. 7, 1963: "The Singing Nun" / "Dominique"

As we have previously discussed, with the Beatles came many changes, and this analysis is no exception. In the six years from 1964 through the end of the decade, 18 times the same artist topped both charts, with 11 of those occurrences compliments of you know who:

February 15, 1964: "Meet the Beatles" / "I Want to Hold Your Hand"
May 2, 1964: "The Beatles Second Album" / "Can't Buy Me Love"
July 25, 1964: Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" / "A Hard Day's Night"
January 9, 1965: "Beatles '65" / "I Feel Fine"
September 11, 1965: Beatles "Help!" / "Help!"
January 8, 1966: Beatles "Rubber Soul" / "We Can Work It Out"
March 5, 1966: SSgt Barry Sadler "Ballads of the Green Berets" / "The Ballad of the Green Berets"
May 21, 1966: Mamas and the Papas "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears" / "Monday Monday"
July 9, 1966: Beatles "Yesterday … and Today" / "Paperback Writer"
December 31, 1966: "The Monkees" / "I'm a Believer"
August 19, 1967: Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" / "All You Need Is Love"
December 2, 1967: Monkees "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones" / "Daydream Believer"
January 6, 1968: Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" / "Hello Goodbye"
March 2, 1968: Paul Mauriat "Blooming Hits" / "Love Is Blue"
June 1, 1968: Simon and Garfunkel "Bookends" / "Mrs. Robinson"
September 21, 1968: Jeannie C. Riley "Harper Valley P.T.A." / "Harper Valley P.T.A."
December 30, 1968: "The Beatles" / "Hey Jude"
November 29, 1969: Beatles "Abbey Road" / "Come Together"

Now for a somewhat related question from the other side of the country:

DEAR JERRY: Who are some of the vinyl V.I.P.s who you would swear had a few No. 1 LPs, but who in fact never even had one?
—Mary Paulson, Daytona Beach, Fla.

DEAR MARY: In other words, you want a list of famous names to show someone, then ask "which of these artists had a No. 1 LP?" Of course, the answer will be "none of them."

I can do that, as well as provide the title and release year of their highest ranking LP:

Paul Anka "Paul Anka Sings His Big 15" (1960) No. 4
Blondie "Parallel Lines" (1978) No. 6

In The Court Of The Crimson King (200 Gram) by King Crimson

Recorded over a period of 10 days in August 1969 and released on October 10th of the same year, In The Court of the Crimson King stands as one of the defining albums of British rock music and one of the finest debut albums of all time. Described at the time as "an uncanny masterpiece" by Pete Townshend, the album has achieved legendary status over the years. It is the only studio document of an extraordinary year in the life of King Crimson; a year that began with the group's first rehearsals on January 13th, included a residency at the Marquee Club, a concert in Hyde Park with The Rolling Stones, the recording and release of the album and ended with the dissolution of the lineup at the close of Crimson's 1st American tour in December.

One of the most anticipated and frequently requested high quality vinyl reissues finally returns to the 12" format! Featuring the Original 1969 Stereo Mix, newly cut from masters approved by Robert Fripp and pressed on 200 Gram Super-Heavyweight Vinyl. Larks' Tongue In Aspic by King Crimson

King Crimson reborn yet again -- the newly configured band makes its debut with a violin (courtesy of David Cross) sharing center stage with Robert Fripp's guitars and his Mellotron, which is pushed into the background. The music is the most experimental of Fripp's career up to this time -- though some of it actually dated (in embryonic form) back to the tail end of the Boz Burrell-Ian Wallace-Mel Collins lineup.

And John Wetton was the group's strongest singer/bassist since Greg Lake's departure three years earlier. What's more, this lineup quickly established itself as a powerful performing unit working in a more purely experimental, less jazz-oriented vein than its immediate predecessor. "Outer Limits music" was how one reviewer referred to it, mixing Cross' demonic fiddling with shrieking electronics, Bill Bruford's astounding dexterity at the drum kit, Jamie Muir's melodic and usually understated percussion, Wetton's thundering (yet melodic) bass, and Fripp's guitar, which generated sounds ranging from traditional classical and soft pop-jazz licks to hair-curling electric flourishes.   - Bruce Eder (All Music Guide)

HALF JAPANESE - Overjoyed

One of the most influential bands in rock history, Half Japanese was founded in the bedroom of brothers Jad and David Fair in 1974. Ignoring musical conventions like chords, rhythms, melody, and song structure, the brothers pioneered DIY and Lo-Fi punk aesthetics simply by being themselves. Passionate, fearless, and relentlessly unique, they self-recorded and self-released by mailing out cassettes with handmade packaging, pressing their own vinyl, and brazenly marketing their music with bizarre magazine ads. This unbridled enthusiasm for the act of creating rock music led them to record dozens of amazing records (including the classic albums "1/2 Gentleman/Not Beasts" and "Charmed Life"), and to inevitably influence countless artists such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, Kurt Cobain, and many many more.

Their first album in 13 years, "Overjoyed", shows the band's aggressiveness as well as its friendly charisma. Produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, the 12 songs on "Overjoyed" are unlike anything in the bands catalog, each unapologetically positive and surprisingly accessible. "Overjoyed" contains a deep purity, exceptionally rare amongst "reunion albums". They neither attempt to recreate their old sound, nor are they aware of current musical trends and conventions. As a result they sidestep common pitfalls and create something new, interesting, and needed.  Release Date: 09/02/2014

Rips by Ex Hex Available For Pre-Order

Ex Hex is Mary Timony, Laura Harris, and Betsy Wright. They are a power trio hailing from Washington, DC, making the music you’ve been waiting for. Drums, bass, guitar, P90s, searing leads—this is unapologetic rock ’n’ roll spat out in the discipline’s mother tongue. Their full-length debut Rips will be released on October 7 in North America and October 13 worldwide.

Mary found Laura Harris (The Aquarium, Benjy Ferree) and they hit it off immediately. Laura is a monster on drums: intuitive, solid, and just a bit rough around the edges. The pair played together for a couple of months in a tiny carpet-lined practice space shared with half a dozen hardcore bands and what appeared to be the better part of a B.C. Rich Mockingbird.

In walked Betsy Wright from the wilds of Virginia. She and Mary have similar tendencies, both defaulting to denim and The Voidoids. Betsy is a performer and an ace piano player, and before long, she was slinging a cherry SG as the third member of Ex Hex.

The group played a handful of shows and a couple of months later, in the spring of 2014, headed into the studio. Working furiously, they recorded over the span of two weeks in North Carolina with Mitch Easter (Let’s Active) and in the basement of Mary’s home with frequent collaborator Jonah Takagi. Bobby Harlow (The Go, Conspiracy of Owls) was tapped to mix because of his unique take on making rock records.

What results is Ex Hex Rips, twelve songs about underdogs, guys stealing your wallet, schoolyard brawls, and getting bent. The record happens pretty quickly, so don’t blink.

*Preorders will ship to arrive on or around the release date of October 7. LP includes a coupon for a full download.

FINCH NEW ALBUM BACK TO OBLIVION NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER

Back to Oblivion marks the return of Finch with the band’s first full length album in over nine years. The Southern California band has undeniably created a lasting, formidable body of work with their two studio albums and EPs - singer Nate Barcalow acknowledges that 2002’s What It Is To Burn all but “defined post-hardcore early in the decade”, while 2005’s Say Hello to Sunshine continued to shape its direction. The band dignified the demand for a celebration of What It Is To Burn’s 10th anniversary by reforming after a hiatus and playing select sold-out shows across the country in 2013. Inspired by the creative surge brought on by these shows, Finch rendered these contradictions moot with Back to Oblivion, their long-awaited third LP and a new, bold chapter in the band’s legacy. Back to Oblivion itself is a paradoxical idea. This is Finch reinvigorated, brimming with the inspiration of their earliest days; the opposite of the negation implied by “oblivion.” But as a songwriting unit, they’re challenging themselves by going deep into the unknown - this is by far Finch’s most introspective and demanding work from a lyrical standpoint. The album was produced by Brian Virtue (Deftones, 30 Seconds to Mars, Janes Addiction, Audio Slave).

Volume X by Trans Am On Clear Vinyl Available at Thrill Jockey

There are three ways of interpreting Volume X, the title of the new album by Trans Am. The first is obvious – it is the band’s tenth studio release, comprised of ten songs that display ten unique sides of Phil Manley, Nathan Means, and Sebastian Thomson. You can also imagine a volume knob being cranked all the way up, the amplification level for an ideal Trans Am listening session. But it can also be read as a representation of the band’s remarkable ability to express, and even embody, unknown capacities, adopting bold stylistic and aesthetic shifts as a defining tenet of their quarter-century long career. Trans Am refuse to rely on their legacy as innovators, opting instead to continue to break down established modes of songwriting, even if they established those modes themselves. Volume X continues in this gloriously contrarian tradition, presenting fans with strange and familiar sounds in new contexts, from kosmische rock to futuristic speed metal to robo-balladry to variants on classic rock that are so warped as to be rendered completely unrecognizable.

“Anthropocene” opens the album with 30 seconds of serene synthesizer ambience before obliterating the stillness with a massive, fuzzy riff anchored by Thomson’s relentless, pounding groove, recorded live in the studio for maximum impact. Volume X is full of these types of disarming moments. Halfway through the sweeping, Kraftwerkian “Night Shift” the song’s syncopated shuffle suddenly becomes a throbbing motorik pulse as two drum takes are overlaid. “Backlash” creeps in with a massive synthesized low-end drone before breaking into a Kill ‘Em All inspired thrash riff that is one of the most aggressive passages the band has laid to tape. And the band saves their most poignant melody for the stripped down slow jam “I’ll Never,” with a vocoded Nathan Means intoning, “Its true, I’ll never get over you.”

MILES DAVIS - KIND OF BLUE (2014 REMASTERED)

Listed as one of the four most influential Jazz albums that happened to be released in 1959 (Dave Brubeck – Time Out & Charles Mingus – Ah Um among them), so much has been said and written about Miles Davis’ Kind Of Blue, it’s virtually impossible to summarize all the necessary info to the length of this page. We could simply list some facts (best sold Jazz album ever worldwide). We could try to explain why it’s the best Jazz album ever made, but the music itself will do that to you.

The first pressing of this remastered stereo version will be released as a limited edition of 2500 numbered copies on a ‘kind of blue’ transparent vinyl!

METHOD MAN - TICAL

Tical is the debut solo album of American rapper, and Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man, released November 15, 1994, on Def Jam Records.

It was the first Wu-Tang solo album released after the group's debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Similar to all first generation solo Wu-Tang projects, Tical was mainly produced by group member RZA, who provided a dark, murky and rugged sound. The album features guest appearances from RZA,Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, as well as several affiliates who would later appear on future group projects. The album's title "Tical" is a slang term for a blunt that has been laced with an adulterant, typically a sweetener or another psychoactive substance. The album title is also a play on the word "methodical".

Moon Duo - Live in Ravenna

Moon Duo's Live in Ravenna was recorded in the summer of 2013 and is available as a limited, one-time vinyl pressing. "Ravenna was memorable for a number of reasons, the most prominent being the really very intense heat, and the setting - Hanabi has an outdoor stage on the beach, the Adriatic Sea only meters away," the band's Sanae Yamada explains. "The show that night, and the recording of it, sort of encapsulates everything that was happening at the time - the heat wave, the journey, and the shift in the energy and composition of the band."

Temples - Sun Structures (Pink Vinyl) PRE-ORDER

Made in Kettering UK, Temples' first recording arrived in one Technicolor burst in July 2012. James Bagshaw and Tom Warmsley recorded Shelter Song, put it on the Internet, and set into motion an unstoppable chain of events that eventually saw them signed to Fat Possum Records. That same track, a bouncy, psychedelic romp, was issued as their debut single on Heavenly Recordings - and quickly became as sought after as any of the vintage vinyl they individually lusted over.

Extremely limited!

October is breast cancer awareness month. To support the cause ten bands will be releasing an album on pink vinyl. For every unit sold, $1 will be donated to Gilda’s Club NYC.

This album is a pre-order. We expect it to ship on or before the September 30th release date.

The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone? (Remastered) PRE-ORDER

WWCOHWWG? was the third and final full- length album by the Canadian indie rock act The Unicorns, and was originally released in 2003. The album gained wide and immediate praise, with broad critical and commercial acclaim from outlets as diverse at NME, Pitchfork and The Village Voice. This cult affection is probably best summarized in the album’s involvement as the premise for the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother? i.e., the basis for the lead character falling in love with said “mother” being their mutual love of the obscure Who Will Cut Our Hair…?.

The Unicorns disbanded shortly after the release of WWCOHWWG?, with founding member Nick Thorborn going on to create the band Islands, and perform in various projects. The Arcade Fire shows are the first time The Unicorns will be performing in over a decade.

This album is a pre-order. We expect it to ship on or before the October 7th release date.

Geykido Comet Records - GC047 - LP Snapshot of the 2014 Las Vegas Music Scene

Geykido Comet Records—better known as GC Records— is the punk rock collective that has put this record out. This is the catalog number, our 47th release. Since 1999, the label has grown into a multimedia library of CDs, USBs, vinyl records, DVDs, and books representing the efforts of hundreds of musicians and artists.

2014 marks 15 years of creative output. It is a year of celebration and rebirth. To celebrate we held a nationwide scavenger hunt. Clues were sent out via Twitter and Instagram, and fans searched around their respective cities hunting for GC goodies. We also organized a 15-year anniversary show featuring bands (including several who reunited for the occasion) artists, fans, and friends all coming together to have a good time.

The Lightning side is punk rock in its purest form. The Cloud side is the new face of Vegas music. You might prefer one side to the other, or you may dislike a song or two on each side. The beauty of this evolution within our various collectives is that you are likely to discover tracks you love and tracks you hate — and you are more than welcome to your opinion.

Regardless of your likes and dislikes, these are the musicians who are working from the bottom up. They are giving everything they have in order to make a name for themselves in a world where SoundCloud and Vine influence album sales more than actual talent. This record is who we are and what we have become. All we ask of you is to keep an open mind.

R.E.M. - Document GAIN 2™ Ultra Analog 180g LP

The last album R.E.M. made before migrating to Warner Bros., and very arguably the last start-to-finish masterpiece the band created in its acclaimed career, Document turned Georgia’s celebrated sons into mainstream stars. Musically unadulterated and sonically pure, the group’s 1987 work epitomizes the unmistakable sound and feeling of college rock during a period where innocence, experimentation, and adventurousness freely collided before being co-opted and branded as “alt-rock.” Document is the record to which everyone refers when citing R.E.M. as the premier example of how a respected band is expected to behave, evolve, and maintain its integrity after experiencing mass success.

Mastered from the original master tapes and carefully pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition 180g LP edition of this breakthrough set explodes with unrivaled instrumental signatures, deep soundstages, and faithful tonalities that allow listeners insight into the actual makes and models of the guitars utilized on the recording. Sharp and clean, Scott Litt’s widescreen production throws the band into clear relief, magnifying its razor-edged melodies and drummer Bill Berry’s foundation-establishing beats. R.E.M. has never sounded so muscular or righteous.

Indeed, the quartet plays as if on a mission, its electrified energy teeming with a contagious fervor that helps fuel political numbers such as “Welcome to the Occupation,” “Exhuming McCarthy,” “Disturbance at the Heron House,” and “King of Birds.” R.E.M. comes into its own, peeling back the layers on vagueness and utilizing Michael Stipe’s biting lyrics and Mike Mills’ amped-up guitar riffs to punctuate its catchy fare. Aptly, songs dance around a central image of fire.

The group’s hallmark jangle-pop motifs and swooning refrains remain, yet they exhibit a determined attitude and wily quality that brings everything up to another notch. Toss in surf-rock fills, feedback accents, deep-South rootsiness, and subversive undertones, and Document stands as near-flawless statement: A reaction to the social and material currency of its era, a call-to-arms to overcome trauma via hope, humor, and justified anger.

All these characteristics bleed into the manic anthem “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine),” a renegade shot of beat poetry, delirious delivery, punk-infused vitality, and bounce-around-the-room chaotic abandon that never grows stale. Is R.E.M. serious or joking? Or both? Part of the genius is that it’s still impossible to tell. R.E.M. delights in taking listeners for a ride on Document, the swerving, drifting, stylistic interplay, and brief detours all of a whole, the group relishing in the fun of going for broke and succeeding at all of its goals.

We don’t need to go on about R.E.M.’s standing as a group that’s influenced countless artists and inspired millions of listeners. If you own just one of the quartet’s albums, it should be Document.

INTER ARMA - The Cavern (EP)

Inter Arma follow up their universally acclaimed ‘Sky Burial’ with the epic 40+ minute one-song ‘The Cavern’ ep. Recorded during breaks from the relentless touring the band did on the ‘Sky Burial’ album with the likes of Baroness, Russian Circles and more, this new ep is the ultimate exhibition of the genius that Inter Arma have always hinted at. Unparalleled musicianship meets the soulfully deranged vocalis of Mike Paparo to create one of the most impressive pieces of metal to be released this year. Shifting from Americana laced extreme metal to doom to stoner rock to prog all within a single song, Inter Arma’s ‘The Cavern’ is an opus that will surely be heralded for years to come along the likes of Sleep’s ‘Dopesmoker’ as a work of true artistic vision and endurance.
