CASSAVETES - OH SO LONG

Debut LP from Philadelphia's Cassavetes.

Bringing rock and roll back at it’s more basic level, Cassavetes is not trying to reinvent the wheel. They are making music to play when you just want to hang out, sing along or even console yourself. Go ahead–it’s OK to have feelings, these guys want to to feel it all.

Reminiscent of early to mid 90′s rock bands such as the first Foo Fighters record, Sugar, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, et al.

Started as a project between Josh Agran (Paint it Black, Pet Milk) and Pat McCunney (Kill the Man Who Questions, Clayton and Fulcrum) with Chris Sigda (Likers) and Jon Murphy (Sore Saints) joining later to round out the group.

Don’t be fooled by the hardcore/punk history of the band mates, but don’t forget it either. This band is equally heavy and soothing. Their sound is no doubt a cacophony of melodic rock and roll and pounding punk rock/hardcore, a sound that would go as easily in a sweaty basement as it would in a huge rock arena.

Free download Included. Limited to 500 on black vinyl.

Jimi Hendrix's 'The Cry Of Love' & 'Rainbow Bridge' To Be Reissued On Vinyl

Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings To Reissue The Cry Of Love and Rainbow Bridge – Two Classic Out-Of-Print Jimi Hendrix Albums Available Sept. 16 on CD and LP

On September 16, Experience Hendrix, LLC in conjunction with Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment will reissue two critically revered Jimi Hendrix albums on CD, vinyl and digital. The Cry Of Love and Rainbow Bridge, his first and second posthumous studio releases respectively, will be reintroduced with original album art and track orders. Both albums have been remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog masters. The Cry Of Love was last issued on CD in 1992, while Rainbow Bridge has never before seen an official CD release. The Cry Of Love may be pre-ordered on CD and LP; Rainbow Bridge may be pre-ordered on CD and LP - at Amazon.

Originally released in 1971, The Cry Of Love was compiled and mixed by Hendrix’s longtime engineer Eddie Kramer and Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell. The bulk of these tracks were recorded between December 1969 and the summer of 1970 at Electric Lady Studios in New York, and were intended to be part of an ambitious double LP tentatively titled First Rays of the New Rising Sun.

Commercially, The Cry Of Love was a huge success, reaching #3 in the U.S. and #2 in the UK, and spawned favorites such as “Angel,” “Freedom,” and “Ezy Ryder.” While Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox comprised the rhythm section on the lion’s share of the tracks, Buddy Miles played drums on “Ezy Ryder” and Noel Redding played bass on “My Friend” (recorded in 1968, before his departure from the Jimi Hendrix Experience). The Cry Of Love also includes the participation of notable guest musicians including Steve Winwood, Chris Wood and Buzzy Linhart among others. VH1 recently declared The Cry Of Love the greatest posthumous classic rock record of all time.

Rainbow Bridge was also compiled and mixed by Eddie Kramer and Mitch Mitchell in 1971, with the help of Electric Lady Studios engineer John Jansen. Most of the tracks were recorded in 1969 and 1970, during the same sessions that spawned The Cry Of Love. Rainbow Bridge is often misconstrued as being an entirely live album, being that the film of the same name features excerpts of a live Jimi Hendrix performance in Maui. However, Hendrix had no role in the creation of the rambling, unfocused 1971 film which was directed by Chuck Wein. The film was not a Hendrix project in any way but instead an independent vision of his manager Michael Jeffery. After Hendrix’s death in September 1970, Jeffery scrapped Hendrix’s original vision of a double studio album titled First Rays Of The New Rising Sun and called for Kramer, Mitchell and Jansen to compile two posthumous albums—including one that would that would serve as a soundtrack for the Rainbow Bridge film.

Mitchell, Kramer and Jansen drew upon Hendrix’s rich trove of studio recordings that the guitarist had been developing at Electric Lady Studios. Songs such as “Dolly Dagger” and “Room Full Of Mirrors” were bright examples of Hendrix’s new creative direction. Other standouts on the album included a studio rendition of “Star Spangled Banner” as well as the majestic “Hey Baby (New Rising Sun).” The one live track on the album, an extraordinary rendition of Hendrix’s original blues composition “Hear My Train A Comin’” is taken from a performance at Berkeley Community Theatre in May of 1970, and not in the film at all. Buddy Miles and Noel Redding both appear on one track each, and the Ronettes provide backing vocals on “Earth Blues.”

Beginning in the late 1990's, the tracks on The Cry Of Love and Rainbow Bridge were reassembled into various compilations, including First Rays of the New Rising Sun, South Saturn Delta, and The JimiHendrix Experience box set. Now, fans of all ages will be able to enjoy songs such as “Straight Ahead,” “Nightbird Flying,” and “Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)” as they were experienced when they first became available 43 years ago.

Allah-Las 'Worship the Sun' PRE-ORDER

Allah-Las' second album, Worship the Sun, expands on the sound established by their maiden effort, honing their fusion of West Coast garage rock and roll, Latin percussion and electric folk. As richly textured and timeless as a Southern California beach break, the songs are evocative of Los Angeles' storied past. Beatniks, artists, surfers, nomads. Remnants of a bygone Sunset Strip. Golden tans and cosmic sunsets. One can feel the warmth of the sun, but the band deftly avoids the kitsch so often indulged by lovers of these things.

Insound exclusive! Insound is the only place where you can get this white colored vinyl!

This album is a pre-order. We expect it to ship on or before the September 16th release date.

Foxygen ...'And Star Power' PRE-ORDER

…And Star Power is the new double album from Foxygen, a CINEMATIC AUDITORY ADVENTURE for the speedy freaks, skull krunchers, abductees, and misfits...Made by Foxygen at Dream Star Studios in their Secret Haunted House with the UFOs flying around in the sky.

A gaggle of guest stars. Roman-numeraled musical suites. Vocals recorded on a shoddy tape machine at The Beverly Hills Hotel and Chateau Marmont. A svelte 82-minute run time of psych-ward folk, cartoon fantasia, songs that morph into each other, weaving in and out of the head like UFO radio transmission skullkrush music. ADHD star power underground revolution. Soft-rock indulgences, D&D doomrock and paranoid bathroom rompers. Process is the point. A kaleidoscoping view. Blasphemy even the gods smile one. Rock and roll for the skull...*

*From Patty Smith's 1973 CREEM review of Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star. The section concludes "Todd Rundgren is preparing us for a generation of frenzied children who will dream in animation."

Heat Leisure III & IV Available For Pre-Order Via ThrillJockey

Heat Leisure is a collective centered around the Carney brothers of Pontiak, Greg Fox and Alexandra Drewchin of Guardian Alien, Steve Strohmeier of Beach House, and Robert J. Otten III. Their music takes a freewheeling approach to psychedelia with obvious nods to Amon Düül II, Can and the Grateful Dead. For this, their second gathering and recording at the Carney’s farm in Virginia, the group recruited the legendary Merry Prankster and Dead associate Ken Babbs, who emceed the Dead’s mythical Veneta, OR gig in 1972 that became Sunshine Daydream, to contribute a shamanistic monologue to “III,” which occupies the first side of this, their first full-length vinyl release. The Carneys approached Babbs about collaborating with Heat Leisure after staying at his Oregon farm on the last Pontiak tour. Heat Leisure’s core principles are spontaneity, serendipity, and collaboration. The band employs frying amp distortion, a signature of Pontiak, as well as an array of drums, synthesizers, samplers, organs and a heavy dose of explorative improvisation by the musicians to create a highly lyrical album.

Heat Leisure was conceived as a multi-media pursuit. While this release, III & IV, is an audio record, Heat Leisure I & II was released in the form of a short film/DVD with an accompanying 7”. The Carneys have said that future incarnations could take any form from performance and paintings, to sculptures or even digital mediums. Very much like the collaborative approach of the musicians to each session, they are keeping it open. I & II was recorded outside on the Carneys’ farm in Virginia, the ensemble improvising live on camera in the field for an afternoon. The film captures the free form interplay of the guitarist and Fox’s driving drums, along with the field’s more typical residents: the farm’s horses. In contrast III & IV was recorded late at night during a three day period during the first week of 2014 in Pontiak’s Studio A, also on their farm, with Lain Carney doing most of the engineering. The session was recorded live to 1” tape, the reel old and decaying, which lead the tape to subtly speed up and slow down as the tape broke down and left residue on the tape heads. This organic effect adds to the woozy, surreal vibe of the music, and could not be replicated in a digital recording.

III & IV is released on LP-only, pressed on virgin vinyl and presented in a jacket with spot UV gloss printing on cover and free download card.  This is a pre-order for October 21st street date.  All orders containing III & IV will ship on or before Oct 21st.

Pig Destroyer 'Mass & Volume' Pre-Order

Recorded during the final hours of the sessions for the ‘Phantom Limb’ lp (Decibel Magazine’s #1 record of 2007) ‘Mass & Volume’ finds Pig Destroyer’s typically break neck speed virtually come to a grinding halt.  2 epic songs of crushing doom prove that Pig Destroyer cannot only dominate all other wickedly fast grind bands, but that when Pig Destroyer does slow, they do slow better than anyone else out there.  If Pig Destroyer were to completely change gears and become a full time doom band, they would be the best doom band in the world.  Until then we all have ‘Mass & Volume’ to hold us over.

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - VIKINGS 2

Vikings is a Canadian-Irish historical drama television series, written and created by Michael Hirst. Filmed in Ireland, Vikings is inspired by the tales about the Viking Ragnar Lodbrok, one of the best-known mythological Norse heroes and notorious as the scourge of France and England. It portrays Ragnar as a Viking farmer who pioneers the first daring raids into England with the support of fellow warriors, his brother Rollo, and his wife, the shieldmaiden Lagertha.

At its heart, Vikings remains a family saga, following the fortunes of Ragnar, his extended family and the people he represents now that he is an earl. Ragnar's own desire to sail west, to explore new kingdoms, in alliance with King Horik, leads to a storm-tossed landing on the coast of Wessex, an important Saxon kingdom ruled by a king not unlike Ragnar. Season 2 is all about crises: of faith, of power and of relationships. Kingdoms are at stake. Lives are at stake. Love is at stake. And all under the watchful eyes of the gods.

The soundtrack  for Vikings 2 features selections from the original music of the second season of the series composed by award winning Canadian composer Trevor Morris, best know for his work on scores of The Tudors, The Borgias and  Immortals. Morris' score elevates the action and emotion experienced throughout the series. His music is at times dark and brooding to reflect the mystery and danger of the Viking world. Often, it's full of thunderous percussion and brass for scenes of conflict; while it's sensitive and touching to illustrate romance.

The music video also won Best Short Form Music Video at the 2000 Grammy Awards.

The critically acclaimed album peaked at number one on four charts, including the Billboard 200. The album received a 5× Platinum certification in the United States. Follow the Leader has sold over 14 million copies worldwide, making it Korn's most successful album. It's often credited with bringing nu metal to the mainstream.

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - EARTH TO ECHO

Earth To Echo is a heartwarming 2014 summer family adventure movie, telling the story of a bunch of young teenage friends whose lives are about to change. Their neighborhood is being destroyed by a highway construction project that is forcing their families to move away. But just two days before they must part ways, the boys begin receiving a strange series of signals on their phones.

Convinced something bigger is going on, the team set out to look for the source of their phone signals. What they discover is something beyond their wildest imaginations: a small alien who has become stranded on Earth. In need of their help, the four friends come together to protect the alien and help him find his way home. This journey, full of wonder and adventure, is their story, and their secret.

The soundtrack album features the songs from the film by artists such as The Mowgli's, This Will Destroy You, Big Data, Chiddy Bang, Heavy English, Holychild and Breathe Carolina. Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 18, 2014

DEAR JERRY: It's been 50 years but I seem to recall hearing that when the Beatles topped both the singles and LPs charts simultaneously, in 1964, that it had never been done before.

Do I have this right or are there other details that I've forgotten?
—Doyle Sanders, Springfield, Ore.

DEAR DOYLE: I can't say if you have forgotten anything, since I don't know precisely what you heard in 1964, but there are other factors to consider.

As stated above, the statement is not accurate. However, wording it this way would make it true: the Beatles were "the first group (four or more members)" to do so.

This clears the way for one trio and four solo artists who preceded them in this regard.

Before the Fab Four accomplished this relatively uncommon feat (February 15, 1964), only nine times — in the first 15 years of both formats (1949-1963) — did the same act rank No. 1 for both LP and single sales, for at least one week.

With date, name (if not obvious as part of the album title), their No. 1 LP and 45, they are:

May 5, 1956: "Elvis Presley" / "Heartbreak Hotel"
Dec. 8, 1956: "Elvis" / "Love Me Tender"
July 29, 1957: Elvis Presley "Loving You" / "Loving You" and "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear"
Dec. 16, 1957: "Elvis' Christmas Album" / "Jailhouse Rock" (also the No. 1 45 EP at the time)
Nov. 24, 1958: "The Kingston Trio" / "Tom Dooley"
Dec. 19, 1960: Elvis Presley "G.I. Blues" / "Are You Lonesome To-Night"
June 23, 1962: Ray Charles "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" / "I Can't Stop Loving You"
August 24, 1963: "Little Stevie Wonder, the 12 Year Old Genius" / "Fingertips Part 2"
Dec. 7, 1963: "The Singing Nun" / "Dominique"

As we have previously discussed, with the Beatles came many changes, and this analysis is no exception. In the six years from 1964 through the end of the decade, 18 times the same artist topped both charts, with 11 of those occurrences compliments of you know who:

February 15, 1964: "Meet the Beatles" / "I Want to Hold Your Hand"
May 2, 1964: "The Beatles Second Album" / "Can't Buy Me Love"
July 25, 1964: Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" / "A Hard Day's Night"
January 9, 1965: "Beatles '65" / "I Feel Fine"
September 11, 1965: Beatles "Help!" / "Help!"
January 8, 1966: Beatles "Rubber Soul" / "We Can Work It Out"
March 5, 1966: SSgt Barry Sadler "Ballads of the Green Berets" / "The Ballad of the Green Berets"
May 21, 1966: Mamas and the Papas "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears" / "Monday Monday"
July 9, 1966: Beatles "Yesterday … and Today" / "Paperback Writer"
December 31, 1966: "The Monkees" / "I'm a Believer"
August 19, 1967: Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" / "All You Need Is Love"
December 2, 1967: Monkees "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones" / "Daydream Believer"
January 6, 1968: Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" / "Hello Goodbye"
March 2, 1968: Paul Mauriat "Blooming Hits" / "Love Is Blue"
June 1, 1968: Simon and Garfunkel "Bookends" / "Mrs. Robinson"
September 21, 1968: Jeannie C. Riley "Harper Valley P.T.A." / "Harper Valley P.T.A."
December 30, 1968: "The Beatles" / "Hey Jude"
November 29, 1969: Beatles "Abbey Road" / "Come Together"

Now for a somewhat related question from the other side of the country:

DEAR JERRY: Who are some of the vinyl V.I.P.s who you would swear had a few No. 1 LPs, but who in fact never even had one?
—Mary Paulson, Daytona Beach, Fla.

DEAR MARY: In other words, you want a list of famous names to show someone, then ask "which of these artists had a No. 1 LP?" Of course, the answer will be "none of them."

I can do that, as well as provide the title and release year of their highest ranking LP:

Larks' Tongue In Aspic by King Crimson

King Crimson reborn yet again -- the newly configured band makes its debut with a violin (courtesy of David Cross) sharing center stage with Robert Fripp's guitars and his Mellotron, which is pushed into the background. The music is the most experimental of Fripp's career up to this time -- though some of it actually dated (in embryonic form) back to the tail end of the Boz Burrell-Ian Wallace-Mel Collins lineup.

And John Wetton was the group's strongest singer/bassist since Greg Lake's departure three years earlier. What's more, this lineup quickly established itself as a powerful performing unit working in a more purely experimental, less jazz-oriented vein than its immediate predecessor. "Outer Limits music" was how one reviewer referred to it, mixing Cross' demonic fiddling with shrieking electronics, Bill Bruford's astounding dexterity at the drum kit, Jamie Muir's melodic and usually understated percussion, Wetton's thundering (yet melodic) bass, and Fripp's guitar, which generated sounds ranging from traditional classical and soft pop-jazz licks to hair-curling electric flourishes.   - Bruce Eder (All Music Guide)

HALF JAPANESE - Overjoyed

One of the most influential bands in rock history, Half Japanese was founded in the bedroom of brothers Jad and David Fair in 1974. Ignoring musical conventions like chords, rhythms, melody, and song structure, the brothers pioneered DIY and Lo-Fi punk aesthetics simply by being themselves. Passionate, fearless, and relentlessly unique, they self-recorded and self-released by mailing out cassettes with handmade packaging, pressing their own vinyl, and brazenly marketing their music with bizarre magazine ads. This unbridled enthusiasm for the act of creating rock music led them to record dozens of amazing records (including the classic albums "1/2 Gentleman/Not Beasts" and "Charmed Life"), and to inevitably influence countless artists such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, Kurt Cobain, and many many more.

Their first album in 13 years, "Overjoyed", shows the band's aggressiveness as well as its friendly charisma. Produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, the 12 songs on "Overjoyed" are unlike anything in the bands catalog, each unapologetically positive and surprisingly accessible. "Overjoyed" contains a deep purity, exceptionally rare amongst "reunion albums". They neither attempt to recreate their old sound, nor are they aware of current musical trends and conventions. As a result they sidestep common pitfalls and create something new, interesting, and needed.  Release Date: 09/02/2014

Rips by Ex Hex Available For Pre-Order

Ex Hex is Mary Timony, Laura Harris, and Betsy Wright. They are a power trio hailing from Washington, DC, making the music you’ve been waiting for. Drums, bass, guitar, P90s, searing leads—this is unapologetic rock ’n’ roll spat out in the discipline’s mother tongue. Their full-length debut Rips will be released on October 7 in North America and October 13 worldwide.

Mary found Laura Harris (The Aquarium, Benjy Ferree) and they hit it off immediately. Laura is a monster on drums: intuitive, solid, and just a bit rough around the edges. The pair played together for a couple of months in a tiny carpet-lined practice space shared with half a dozen hardcore bands and what appeared to be the better part of a B.C. Rich Mockingbird.

In walked Betsy Wright from the wilds of Virginia. She and Mary have similar tendencies, both defaulting to denim and The Voidoids. Betsy is a performer and an ace piano player, and before long, she was slinging a cherry SG as the third member of Ex Hex.

The group played a handful of shows and a couple of months later, in the spring of 2014, headed into the studio. Working furiously, they recorded over the span of two weeks in North Carolina with Mitch Easter (Let’s Active) and in the basement of Mary’s home with frequent collaborator Jonah Takagi. Bobby Harlow (The Go, Conspiracy of Owls) was tapped to mix because of his unique take on making rock records.

What results is Ex Hex Rips, twelve songs about underdogs, guys stealing your wallet, schoolyard brawls, and getting bent. The record happens pretty quickly, so don’t blink.

*Preorders will ship to arrive on or around the release date of October 7. LP includes a coupon for a full download.

FINCH NEW ALBUM BACK TO OBLIVION NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER

Back to Oblivion marks the return of Finch with the band’s first full length album in over nine years. The Southern California band has undeniably created a lasting, formidable body of work with their two studio albums and EPs - singer Nate Barcalow acknowledges that 2002’s What It Is To Burn all but “defined post-hardcore early in the decade”, while 2005’s Say Hello to Sunshine continued to shape its direction. The band dignified the demand for a celebration of What It Is To Burn’s 10th anniversary by reforming after a hiatus and playing select sold-out shows across the country in 2013. Inspired by the creative surge brought on by these shows, Finch rendered these contradictions moot with Back to Oblivion, their long-awaited third LP and a new, bold chapter in the band’s legacy. Back to Oblivion itself is a paradoxical idea. This is Finch reinvigorated, brimming with the inspiration of their earliest days; the opposite of the negation implied by “oblivion.” But as a songwriting unit, they’re challenging themselves by going deep into the unknown - this is by far Finch’s most introspective and demanding work from a lyrical standpoint. The album was produced by Brian Virtue (Deftones, 30 Seconds to Mars, Janes Addiction, Audio Slave).

Volume X by Trans Am On Clear Vinyl Available at Thrill Jockey

There are three ways of interpreting Volume X, the title of the new album by Trans Am. The first is obvious – it is the band’s tenth studio release, comprised of ten songs that display ten unique sides of Phil Manley, Nathan Means, and Sebastian Thomson. You can also imagine a volume knob being cranked all the way up, the amplification level for an ideal Trans Am listening session. But it can also be read as a representation of the band’s remarkable ability to express, and even embody, unknown capacities, adopting bold stylistic and aesthetic shifts as a defining tenet of their quarter-century long career. Trans Am refuse to rely on their legacy as innovators, opting instead to continue to break down established modes of songwriting, even if they established those modes themselves. Volume X continues in this gloriously contrarian tradition, presenting fans with strange and familiar sounds in new contexts, from kosmische rock to futuristic speed metal to robo-balladry to variants on classic rock that are so warped as to be rendered completely unrecognizable.

“Anthropocene” opens the album with 30 seconds of serene synthesizer ambience before obliterating the stillness with a massive, fuzzy riff anchored by Thomson’s relentless, pounding groove, recorded live in the studio for maximum impact. Volume X is full of these types of disarming moments. Halfway through the sweeping, Kraftwerkian “Night Shift” the song’s syncopated shuffle suddenly becomes a throbbing motorik pulse as two drum takes are overlaid. “Backlash” creeps in with a massive synthesized low-end drone before breaking into a Kill ‘Em All inspired thrash riff that is one of the most aggressive passages the band has laid to tape. And the band saves their most poignant melody for the stripped down slow jam “I’ll Never,” with a vocoded Nathan Means intoning, “Its true, I’ll never get over you.”
