Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 1, 2014

DEAR JERRY: As you know from numerous other readers, the producers of television shows always seem to avoid including any information in the credits about the recordings heard in the film --especially frustrating when it's the main theme and played at the beginning of every episode!

Such is the case with the music that kicks off HBO's "True Detective."

What intrigues me most about this tune is it is by a male-female duo who sound like Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, and their hits "Lady Bird" and "Summer Wine."

I know Hazelwood died but maybe it's something they recorded in the 1960s.
—Heather Montel, Terre Haute, Ind.

DEAR HEATHER: The adopted "True Detective" theme, at least for Season 1, may remind you of 1960s songs by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, but that's the extent of the connection.

The singers are Brett and Rennie Sparks, a husband and wife collaboration who, for about 20 years, have recorded and performed as the Handsome Family.

"True Detective," the Emmy-winning drama starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, uses Brett and Rennie's composition "Far from Any Road" as its theme.

"Far from Any Road" is one of 13 tracks on the Handsome Family's 2003 album, "Singing Bones" (Carrot Top 036).

DEAR JERRY: I would like a list of notable vinyl era releases played in the U.S. that are all or mostly in a foreign language.

I know you have mentioned a few in previous columns, but in a different context. No where can I find them all in one place, but you seem to have the resources to do it.
—Darwin Graham, Marysville, Calif.

DEAR DARWIN: You're right. There are scattered references but usually to just a few. There is nothing that attempts to be comprehensive.

Even our list does not have every one made, but it's a good start and we can add to it as new entries are discovered.

Not all of these are completely in another language, but I'll include them as long as a significant percentage is. Also, space does not allow for listing more than two titles for any artist:

ABBA (Swedish / Spanish) "Fernando" (1976); "Fernando" (1976)
Steve Allen and His Orchestra with the Copacabana Trio (Spanish) "Cuando Calienta El Sol (When the Sun Is Hot)" (1963)
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass (Portuguese) "Zazueira" (1969)

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

pre-order vinyl records from our friends at SoundStageDirect

Sanctuary (Pre-Order) by Iron Maiden

BMG and INgrooves Music Group will follow the 2012/13 IRON MAIDEN vinyl picture disc reissues of the first eight Iron Maiden albums, which spanned the 1980s, with brand new pressings of the albums in heavyweight 180g black vinyl in the United States.

In conjunction with these premium album releases, a strictly limited one-off run of the 7'' singles from each respective album will be made available. These highly collectable black vinyl singles will be cut from the original UK analogue master tapes. Released in replica artwork packaging, this will be the first time ever that these black vinyl singles have officially been made available in the U.S. and sure to become a must-have item for fans, collectors and anyone who missed out first time round.

The release of these high quality, black vinyl records offers optimum choice to fans who would like to own a piece of Maiden's authentic 1980's vinyl sound, or for those simply wanting to rediscover this much loved, iconic format. Coupled with the end of the Maiden England World Tour which began in North America in 2012 and finished last month at Knebworth Park's Sonisphere Festival in the UK, this now completes Maiden's 1980's touring and catalogue reissues cycle, so the band are free to focus on their dynamic future plans.

Watch Dogs (Pre-Order) by Brian Reitzell

Following on from the phenomenal success of their RSD release of FAR CRY 3: BLOOD DRAGON’s, Invada partner with Ubisoft Music and dive once again into the world of video game soundtracks with the release of Brian Reitzell's musical score to the highly-anticipated WATCH_DOGS. Full of infectious beats and atmospheric, retro-futuristic synths, the score is a further achievement from Reitzell, who has previously written music for drama series HANNIBAL as well as working on multiple scores with director Sofia Coppola. To represent the varied challenges of the game, Reitzell brings an eclectic feel to the score, with thumping beats and off-kilter melodies of the club scene juxtaposed with the more ethereal and atmospheric synth and guitar, evoking the music of Vangelis and Brian Eno - ideal for a post-noir cyberpunk game.

TV Eyes Self-Titled LP Up For Pre-Order

Alternative super group gets its first international release!

Jason Falkner, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. and Brian Reitzell have quite a musical history. Manning and Falkner—once bandmates in Jellyfish—have gone on to success as solo acts, or as members of groups including The Three O’Clock, The Grays, Imperial Drag, and The Moog Cookbook. Brian Reitzell, once the drummer for Redd Kross and Air, turned his talents to film and television, supervising and composing music for several films directed by Sofia Coppola, including The Virgin Suicides and the Academy Award nominated Lost In Translation (for which he, along with Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, was nominated for a BAFTA award.) Currently, Reitzell composes music for the NBC-TV drama Hannibal.

But, together, they were TV Eyes.

Their 2006 self-titled debut was only released in Japan, now out of print, and commanding top dollar on the collector market. Omnivore Recordings is going to rectify that situation with a CD and 2-LP expanded edition. The release features nine tracks from TV Eyes, plus 3 bonus tracks from the Japanese only EP Softcore—each of which is a song from TV Eyes, remixed by a member of the band. If that wasn’t enough, the reissue also includes the first CD appearance of “She’s A Study,” which was featured in the aforementioned Lost In Translation, and previously only available on a white label, promo 12” single a decade ago.

For its first ever issue on vinyl, the double LP will be pressed on translucent yellow vinyl, and includes a download card. The packaging for both formats will include photos and liner notes from the band’s Jason Falkner.

Release date: 10/7/2014

Rational Youth & Psyche. Thunderstruck / Underrated. 3x 7" Vinyl (Clear, White, Orange)

It happened this year in Sweden. Rational Youth reunited for their first shows in Europe in well over a decade, supported by fellow-Canadian, though now long-time ex-pats Psyche. Both artists have a dedicated fan-following, and whether you take Unveiling the Secret or Cold War Night Life, The Crawler or Holiday in Bangkok, both artists have left an undeniable mark on the synthpop scene both in Canada and in Europe.

We are not really sure who came up with the admittedly kitsch idea of covering the AC/DC classic Thunderstruck, but after seeing it performed live as an encore from Stockholm to Malmo, we were sold. The familiar melody makes a killer analogue synthline, and the vocal performances by Tracy Howe and Darrin Huss are bang-on. Surely, tongues are firmly planted in cheeks on this one, but you've never had more fun, and after all that is what synthpop is all about. It's also a revenge song of sorts: Psyche's Synthpop revenge on all those years of bullying by AC/DC fans for listening to New Wave stuff like Gary Numan while in high school. By having fun with such an iconic stadium rock tune, the artists are bridging a gap in diversity.

The exclusive b-side Underrated is an original track that combines the best elements of Psyche and Rational Youth, with Howe's almost deadpan style creating the perfect counterpoint to Huss' crooning. Underrated is a spontaneous electro wonder created by Kevin Komoda, and brought to a frenetic final statement on unsung heroes by Darrin, Tracy, as well as Gaenor Howe on vocals.

The 7" vinyl is released on Artoffact Records in three colours:

1. Shot-glass clear, limited to 100 copies.
2. Can I come again please? white, limited to 150 copies.
3. Texas cheeseburger cheese orange, limited to 250 copies.

The record comes in a 3mm spined-sleeve and is a design replica of the original 1990 Australian-issue sleeve for AC/DC's own Thunderstruck 7". Both the iconic thunderbolt and the artist logos are done in a silver pantone. MP3 download coupon is also included.

This package gives you one copy of each of the colours available of the Rational Youth / Psyche 7" vinyl. YOU GET 3 COMPLETE SLEEVES, WITH ONE 7" VINYL IN EACH SLEEVE.

Front Line Assembly. AirMech. 3x 2LP (3x Picture Vinyl + Yellow, Brown, & Clear Vinyl)

Two years ago, Carbon Games signed Front Line Assembly to create an original album soundtrack for AirMech, a futuristic free-to-play online video game. In each set, one of the LPs will be a gorgeous picture-vinyl, featuring the members of FLA in the AirMech setting. Each set will also contain a second, colored vinyl.

Debut Album from Sylvie Simmons Available For Pre-Order From LightInTheAttic

We're happy to announce this sweet album by the great Sylvie Simmons: a NEW recording for us here at Light in the Attic, but it was so beautiful we couldn't resist. Sylvie is haunting and out-of-time, but it is also a brand-new, original debut album by a singer-writer who has been making music since she was a little girl but just for herself. The raw, delicate, and sensual songs about love and love gone wrong are performed on a ukulele, which here sounds like a broken harp or a heartbroken guitar. Late last year, in a gap between tours, Howe Gelb of Giant Sand lured Sylvie to the desert where they recorded live to tape in Wavelab Studio in Tucson with Thoger Lund playing upright bass and Howe, who produced the album, backing her brilliantly on guitar, synthesizers, and piano.

Born in London, she'd felt the pull of America since childhood and ran away to LA in the late seventies to write about music, convinced she'd never have the nerve to perform it. She became renowned as a rock writer (she's the subject of a BBC documentary, The Rock Chick) and also as an acclaimed author. Her books include the cult fiction Too Weird For Ziggy and biographies Serge Gainsbourg: A Fistful of Gitanes and I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen. Following numerous movements across the globe-including three years in a tumbledown French chateau- she now lives in San Francisco.

•Produced by Howe Gelb and Chris Schultz (track 6 only)
•Debut album by esteemed writer and Leonard Cohen biographer Sylvie Simmons
•LP housed in “tip-on” gatefold Stoughton jacket
•Lyric booklet included
•Color vinyl editions:
200 on “Forest Marbled” wax (LITA Vinyl Subscriber exclusive)
100 on “Turquoise” wax (LITA.net pre-orders exclusive, limit 2 per customer)

Pre-order Sylvie, out October 28th, on CD, vinyl, and digital. First 100 pre-orders will receive turquoise colored wax!

WU-TANG CLAN - IRON FLAG

Reissue of "Iron Flag" the album from Wu-Tang Clan on 180 gram by Music On Vinyl. Double LP on limited TRANSPARENT Vinyl Edition. Including 4 page booklet.

Iron Flag is the fourth studio album by American East Coast hip hop collective Wu-Tang Clan, released in 2001. It was certified Gold. Having churned out a myriad of solo projects since their breakthrough group album Enter The Wu-Tang and Wu-Tang Forever, the crew surprisingly came together a year after The W to launch a new album.

Rather than stick to one unified sound for most of the album’s tracks, as with previous Clan albums, much of Iron Flag returns to many different individual sounds and styles that the Wu-Tang had visited over the years. Sonical influences range from RZA’s Bobby Digital sound to the gritty style of the Wu-Tang’s debut album, and the sped-up vocal samples style of Wu-Tang Forever.

Guru Overload by Eternal Tapestry Available For Pre-Order

Guru Overload is released on Finnish label Oaken Palace in an edition of 500 copies pressed on 140gram red vinyl and packaged in a 100% recycled card sleeve with free download card.  This is a pre-order. Orders are expected to ship in mid-October.

Eternal Tapestry will release a new album on Thrill Jockey in early 2015.

Guru Overload, mastered by James Plotkin, features 5 new jams that the band recorded in a private cabin deep in the woods. The album manages to strike a balance between the freaked-out A World Out Of Time and the more laid-back Dawn In 2 Dimensions, both in terms of style as well as track length. The result is a wonderfully smooth flow of new material that combines exotic and new sounds with the best of krautrock and psychedelic rock.

As with every release on Oaken Palace Records proceeds from Guru Overload will be donated to an endangered species foundation.  Eternal Tapestry have already decided on the Orangutan.  All profits will be donated to the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation.

The Body / Sandworm Split LP Pre-Order

The Body and Sandworm contribute full sides of brand new material for this vinyl-only split LP pressed on virgin vinyl with free download card. While supplies last mailorder customers will be treated to a clear vinyl edition (LIMITED TO ONLY 500).

The Body and Sandworm are two bands with roots in the Providence underground that take unbridled negativity and spin it in opposite directions. The Body, legendary in both underground extreme music enclaves and the wider community of metal fans, are masters of expansive expressions of pure sadness that incorporate sounds and instruments far beyond what is typical in the realm of heavy metal. Sandworm is the young and hungry duo of Ben Eberle and Pat Reilly, bursting out of the gate on this, their first proper release, with a collection of raw and elemental black metal. On several songs they are joined by Mindy Stock of Virusse on drums. The contrast between the corrosive guitars and concise blasts of energy that Sandworm offers up and the grisly, detailed sprawl of the side-long track “The Manic Fire” by The Body displays the diversity of the Providence scene and amplifies each band’s unique abilities to create meaningful expressions of darkness and anger.

This is a pre-order for October 21st street date. Any orders containing The Body/Sandworm split will ship on or slightly before the street date.

GERRY RAFFERTY - SNAKES AND LADDERS

Snakes and Ladders is the fourth album by Gerry Rafferty. It was released in 1980, following the success of his previous two albums, City to City and Night Owl. The album charted at No. 15 in the UK and reached No. 61 in the US Album Charts.

The song "The Garden Of England" was recorded at Beatles producer George Martin's AIR studio in Montserrat. All the songs were original Rafferty compositions, though one – "Johnny's Song" – was a remake of a song which had been previously released by his former band Stealer's Wheel, and another – "Didn't I" – was a remake of a song from Rafferty's 1971 album Can I Have My Money Back.

The memorable melodies, moving allegories, and genuine lyrical warmth that Rafferty is revered for arise in some more tracks, like in the beauty of "Bring It All Home" or in the mystique of "Look At The Moon". "Royal Mile" was released as a single in the U.K.

BLACK DUB - BLACK DUB

Black Dub is the debut album by the Daniel Lanois-instigated collaboration Black Dub. The quartet, comprised of producer Daniel Lanois on guitar and vocals, jazz drummer extraordinaire Brian Blade, session bassist Daryl Johnson, and vocalist/keyboardist Trixie Whitley (daughter of the late great Chris Whitley) make a beguiling, seductive music that blurs Rock, Soul, Blues, gothic Americana, New Orleans Funk, and dubwise Reggae.

The band generated significant excitement when they released stark, black-and-white videos of their rehearsals and leaked concert footage from a show at Bowery Ballroom in New York. All songs on Black Dub are written by Lanois, save for two, the group effort "Last Time" and the song "Ring The Alarm" written by Tenor Saw. The ballads "I Believe in You," "Surely," "Silverado," and "Nomad" are stellar showcases for Whitley's deeply soulful contralto. She rises above the band and soars, delivering these lyrics as if they are her own; she goes straight to the heart of the listener with that voice, regardless of genre.

PETER TOSH - BUSH DOCTOR

Bush Doctor is the third studio album by Jamaican reggae musician Peter Tosh. Along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer he was one of the core members of the band The Wailers (1963–1974). Tosh also established himself as a successful solo artist. In 1978 he was contracted by Rolling Stones Records and the album Bush Doctor was released in the same year, introducing Tosh to a larger audience.

The single from the album, a cover version of The Temptations song "Don't Look Back", performed as a duet with Mick Jagger, made Tosh one of the best-known reggae artists. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is also featured on the album, playing guitar on "Bush Doctor" and "Stand Firm".

The re-issue with remastered audio is pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

Corrosion Of Conformity - Deliverance Pre-Order

Currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, the sludge/stoner metal linchpin "Deliverance" -- the first C.O.C. album to feature Pepper Keenan on lead vocals exclusively -- marked the group's first entry onto the Billboard Top 200, and it remains their best-selling title to this day.

Praised by Kerrang! as a "true '90s classic," the album will once again be available on vinyl after being out-of-print for nearly two decades with a new-and-improved gatefold jacket in three different 180-gram colors: green (approx. 700 copies), black (approx. 200 copies) and red (approx. 100 copies).

Corrosion Of Conformity - Blind Pre-Order

Freshly inducted into Decibel Magazine's Hall of Fame, "Blind" (originally released on Relativity Records in 1991) saw C.O.C. move away from their crossover past with a more streamlined, metallic thrash sound. Hailed by All Music Guide as "one of the most important heavy rock albums of the decade," the album -- the group's first with Pepper Keenan -- has never before been released on vinyl in North America.

The Prosthetic edition of "Blind" will be a gatefold double-LP available in three different 180-gram colors: purple (approx. 700 copies), black (approx. 200 copies) and clear (approx. 100 colors). A color lyric insert and liner notes by music journalist Chris Dick will also be included, as will three bonus tracks from the 1995 Columbia Records re-release of the album.

The Soft Bulletin (Reissue) - The Flaming Lips

Their follow-up to the experimental four-disc Zaireeka, The Soft Bulletin is an emotional, lush, often symphonic pop masterpiece with distinct melodies amidst the swirl of textures and tones. Yet for all its headphone friendly innovations, the music is still amazingly accessible, never sacrificing popcraft in the name of radical experimentation.

Do What You Want To, It's What You Should Do PRE-ORDER - Flowers

LP includes red colored vinyl, and download card limited to 500 copies. The U.S. version of this album will come with 6 bonus tracks, on red clear color vinyl, and different artwork than the UK version. Shoreditch, London, England’s debut album is gonna be one that will instantly shock all of your senses. Rachel’s vocal range is one of an angle. Like a young Choir school child she can sing high or low in any range without cracking at all. The effect that her voice has over everyone is simply memorizing. The simplicity of the three piece is one that does not need to be mixed with any modern technology in any way as Rachel’s voice is a true instrument that can out perform any modern instrument

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 25, 2014

DEAR JERRY: You have been quite successful at digging up the details on records from the past, so I'm hoping you can accomplish something on my behalf.

Just before the British Invasion turned everything upside down, one of the big fads was folk music. Among the great folk hits in 1963 was "Hootenanny," by the Glencoves.

Their next record, though not quite as popular as "Hootenanny," had something to do with Ball Mountain. Whether that is part of the title or not I don't know.

If it helps to identify it, I am almost positive it made the charts here in Lansing.
—Maggie O'Grady, East Lansing, Mich.

DEAR MAGGIE: Strictly from what one would hear on the record, the location in question could easily be construed as Ball Mountain, but it really is Bald Mountain. The audible difference is very subtle.

The exact title is "Devil's Waitin' (On Bald Mountain)" (Select 727).

Your recollection of this folk tune being a regional hit is accurate. In December 1963, "Devil's Waitin' (On Bald Mountain)" was among Lansing's Top 30, according to the WMRT Silver Dollar Survey.

This record was actually the Glencoves' third, following "Hootenanny" (Select 724) and "Don't Knock" (Select 726).

All three came out in 1963, and they added one more in early '64, "Keep Away from My Gal" (Select 729).
The four Glencoves were: Don Connors (lead vocals and banjo); Brian Bolger (vocals and guitar); Bill Byrne (vocals and guitars), and John Cadley (vocals).

In just 1963, I know of over 50 individual releases with "Hootenanny" in their titles.

DEAR JERRY: The rock and roll recording featured in the current TV ads for Southern Comfort liqueurs has me mystified.

I know I have never heard it before, so if it was ever a hit record then it's one I somehow missed.

It sounds as much like what the Stray Cats were doing in the 1980s as it does something Eddie Cochran would have done in the '50s.

It's not easy to understand the lyrics, but one line I did catch is "don't hesitate, I can't wait."

All I need to know is who, what, and when?
—Conrad Gessler, Kodiak, Alaska

DEAR CONRAD: In the order asked, the singer is Jerry Lott but he was billed as The Phantom. His song is "Love Me," and it was recorded in 1958 but didn't come out until Feb. 1960 (Dot 16056).

Surprisingly, Dot even issued Lott's single with a picture sleeve, definitely uncommon for the first record by an unknown artist.

To put this in perspective, Dot's biggest star by far was Pat Boone. His first 10 singles were all big hits, including six million-sellers, yet not until his 11th single, "Love Letters in the Sand," did they splurge and produce a custom record sleeve for their No. 1 cash cow.

In the Phantom's case, however, his first record would also be his last.

How, 54 years later, the makers of Southern Comfort came up with this obscure piece of fuel-injected rock and roll is in itself a mystery.

Though revered by R&R and rockabilly collectors, "Love Me" never appeared on anyone's chart at the time, and didn't really become a hot item in the record collecting world until the mid-1970s.

The Phantom only rated two stars, indicating "moderate sales potential," from Billboard in their Feb. 29, 1960 Pop Record Reviews. They opined "A wild vocal that attempts to outdo Presley at his wildest." "Love Me," featuring the kind of reverberation reminiscent of 1950s recordings made in Memphis at the Sun Studio, with the original photo sleeve can now fetch $600 to $800.

IZ ZAT SO? Couldn't help being amused by the unidentified Billboard reviewer of "Love Me," who made this erroneous and misleading comment about the custom picture cover: "Sleeve shows the Phantom with a blindfold over his eyes."

As the word implies, a blindfold does indeed cover the eyes; however, what the Phantom is wearing in that photo is a mask — pretty much the opposite of a blindfold.

His black mask, nearly identical to those worn by the Lone Ranger, covers most of the facial features but has slits that allow the eyes to do their job.

Imagine how much less effective the Lone Ranger would have been, especially when riding and shooting, while wearing a blindfold.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

this week's bestselling pre-order vinyl records from our friends at SoundStageDirect

LYFE (Pre-Order) by Glass Ghost

Since the release of their debut album Idol Omen in 2009, Glass Ghost's founding members Eliot Krimsky and Michael Johnson have kept busy. In addition to playing dozens of shows, including a tour with White Rabbits, Johnson joined Dirty Projectors as their new drummer, Krimsky has been collaborating with Here We Go Magic on keys, and the duo welcomed two new members to the group, Tyler Wood on keyboards and percussion, and Aerial East on vocals. Like their debut, LYFE was produced by Tyler Wood, who also produced Joan As Policewoman’s 2014 album The Classic. For the LYFE recording sessions, the group recruited many of their friends to contribute, including Joan Wasser of Joan As Policewoman, Nat Baldwin of Dirty Projectors, and Christopher Tignor of Slow Six and Wires Under Tension. Pushing their songs to new levels by working with Brooklyn's musical elite is nothing new for Glass Ghost. They worked with more than a dozen of their friends from Brooklyn's music community, including Sharon Van Etten (who in 2011 noted “Eliot Krimsky is one of my favorite writers.”), Here We Go Magic's Luke Temple, and Matt Iwanusa of Caveman, for their debut which was described by the New Yorker as “elegant compositions of frosted indie pop,” and by Time Out New York as “weird and mournful yet highly rhythmic."

On their new album LYFE, Krimsky (who's currently working on his M.A. in Media Studies at The New School, where he’s exploring the convergence of technological mediation, identity and music) turns his observations of the absurd and mundane into metaphors about living in a world where every detail about your life is harvested, quantified, and used by marketing companies to manipulate your behavior. Rather than sounding didactic or overly intellectual, the songs provide windows into the band's internal world, as Krimsky's tender falsetto glides over the icy landscapes of synths, strings, woodwinds, and regal horns. As the product of Krimsky, Johnson, and Wood's mutual trust, vision, and relentless attention to every detail, LYFE masterfully blends airy, melancholy, and chilly atmospherics with Glass Ghost's irresistible bottom-heavy grooves and hooky pop sensibilities.

Boards of Canada's 'Music Has The Right To Children' Being Reissued On Vinyl

‘Music Has the Right To Children’ arrived in 1998 as a joint release from Warp and the burgeoning Skam imprint, and proved a seminal release which helped define Warp’s place in electronic music’s hall of fame, and gained the introspective, mysterious sounds of duo Boards of Canada a powerful cult following.

The album created a strange influence in its singular combination of hip-hop rhythms and more nostalgic elements drawn from a mid- 20th century electronic culture that was distinctly British. ‘One Very Important Thought’ resurrected the voice of an automated documentary narrator to remind one of the prevalence of censorship in contemporary culture over distant meandering synths in a way that was bizarrely nostalgic yet of no time at all, while ‘Smokes Quantity’ reigns the same archive voices onto chugging beats to hallucinatory effect.

It is, however, cuts like ‘Roygbiv’ and ‘Pete Standing Alone’ which remain the reason why the album remains a cornerstone for countless musicians today, where naïve synth lines and crunching hip-hop beats manage to induce the listener to a state at once pastoral and urban, recalling the past while avoiding mere replication of it. ‘Music Has the Right To Children’ offers as rich and mind-boggling a listen now as when it was released a decade and a half previously, and one cannot comprehend the landscape of contemporary electronic culture without it.

Sinoia Caves -'Beyond The Black Rainbow' OST' Available On Clear Vinyl

Jagjaguwar and Death Waltz Recording Company are excited to announce that they are coreleasing the soundtrack to Panos Cosmatos’ Beyond The Black Rainbow on 9/2. This supposed “lost film” from the 1980s is inspired by obscure scifi movies and classic dystopian fiction. Created by Sinoia Caves, the ongoing project of Jeremy Schmidt a disciple of longform cosmic synthesizer soundscape, and member of Canadian psychandprog pioneersBlack Mountain the soundtrack draws on inspiration from Tangerine Dream, Wendy Carlos andJohn Carpenter. Schmidt artfully navigates the various sonic sensibilities of his predecessors, incoporating touchstones such as mellotron choirs, glacial analogue synthesizer pads and arpeggiators. The result is ominously beauitful, otherworldly and terrifying.
  • PRESSED ON CLEAR WAX
  • Sinoia Caves is the project of Jeremy Schmidt, keys/organ player for Black Mountain who have over 110,000 soundscans to date.
  • Previous Sinoia Caves song was licensed for trailer for “The Dark Knight”
