Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at NewOnVinyl

SOUNDTRACK (OST) - GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Collector's Edition 2 disc GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY vinyl includes AWESOME MIX VOL. 1, the collection of songs featured in the film. Music plays a major role in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as the 1970s songs featured in the film are part of the storyline in a unique way. Explaining how the songs come to play in the story, director James Gunn says, 'One of the main story points in the movie is that Quill has this compilation tape (Awesome Mix #1) that he got from his mother before she died that she made for him. It was of songs that she loved, all songs from the 1970s, and that's the only thing he has left of his mother and that's the only thing he has left of his home on Earth. He uses that as a connection to his past and to the sadness that he feels of having left all that and lost all that.' As well as, the complete official original score from the film as composed by Tyler Bates.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

SOUNDTRACK (OST) - UTOPIA

One of the most critically acclaimed scores of 2013, UTOPIA SERIES 1’s soundtrack was described by The Arts Desk as "Cristobal Tapia de Veer's cunning, menacing music."

Coming out in September on DLP vinyl for the first time (and on limited yellow vinyl at that), the score features instruments ranging from a rare Chilean trutruka recorded in Borough tube station to the percussion sounds of a rhino turd from Zimbabwe! This one of the most eclectic and innovative TV scores in a long while and has been specially mastered for this vinyl release.

“This show. This music. Everything about is so odd and so perfect. The soundtrack to this show is quite honestly one of the best I've ever heard…” - Waterman Butterly (Top tracks of 2013 - UTOPIA OVERTURE - CRISTOBAL TAPIA DE VEER)

NICK DRAKE- PINK MOON

Pink Moon is the third and final studio album by the English folk musician Nick Drake, released in the UK by Island Records on 25 February 1972. It was the only one of Drake's studio albums to be released in North America during his lifetime: the only previous release there had been a 1971 compilation simply entitled Nick Drake featuring tracks from both his first two albums, which were not released in North America in their original forms until 1976.Pink Moon differs from Drake's previous albums in that it was recorded without a backing band, featuring just Drake on vocals, acoustic guitar and a brief piano riff overdubbed onto the title track.

Released two years before Drake's death in November 1974, at the age of twenty-six, the lyrical content of Pink Moon has often been attributed to Drake's ongoing battle with depression. The songs are shorter than on his previous albums, with a total album running time of just over twenty-eight minutes.

Pink Moon, like Drake's previous studio albums, did not sell well while he was still living but has since gained in critical acclaim and record sales. Stephen Holden, in a 1972 review for Rolling Stone magazine said, "The beauty of Drake's voice is its own justification. May it become familiar to us all.

Deerhoof 'La Isla Bonita' Pre-Order On Yellow Vinyl From PolyVinylRecords

Blame it on the Ramones. After Deerhoof finished recording demos for La Isla Bonita this past February, they began rehearsing for an upcoming tour. Halfway through a run-through of a long-time Deerhoof live favorite, their cover of the Ramones classic "Pinhead," someone offhandedly asked, "Why don't we ever write a song like this?" So Greg quickly dashed off a song on a scrap of paper, showed it to the band, and they recorded the breakneck stomper "Exit Only" in one take.

La Isla Bonita was recorded in guitarist Ed Rodriguez's basement. Situated next to a parking garage, it was perfect for making noise till the wee hours. They recorded live, DIY style, "a weeklong sleepover arguing over whether to try and sound like Joan Jett or Janet Jackson, cracking each other up, one guitarist whose name starts with J always putting too much red chile into the rations," says Greg. But more than that La Isla Bonita is about the eclectic worldwide community that has supported them.

You'll hear them pay musical tributes to their improbable list of heroes-turned-fans: David Bowie, Ric Ocasek, The Roots, Lou Reed, David Byrne, Sonic Youth, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Beck.   This is the glorious sound of four musicians owning their own hard-won and richly deserved legacy.

**Early Bird Edition - Limited to 500**

Joyful Noise Recordings Announces Debut EP from Ko

Ko is the pseudonym of Kristin Newborn: vocalist, guitarist, and downright badass. From the age of 18, Kristin was classically trained by a religious cult show choir. No foolin'. But as fucked up as that experience must have been, Kristin emerged victorious. A native of Indianapolis by way of Los Angeles, Kristin first began writing under the name Ko in the spring of 2012, after the demise of her first group Slothpop. Shortly thereafter she enlisted Todd Heaton to play percussion for the live shows and later recordings.

We are very pleased to introduce you to their first recorded material. Ko's debut EP contains 4 songs of intricate vocal looping, heartfelt purpose, and plenty of Danelectro wall-of-sound-fuzz to boot.

The EP is released on bronze-inside-clear 7" limited to 350 hand-numbered copies, and white vinyl 7"

Splug Offers Record Collectors Chance To Trade and Barter Smarter!

Collecting Vinyl Records Interview with Mark Klein and Mike Saffert of Splug.com

It is estimated that close to half a million businesses in the US are involved in some form of barter exchange. Additionally, there are an estimated 400 commercial and corporate barter companies serving all parts of the world.  In its simplest form, bartering is a method of exchange in which goods or services are directly exchanged for other goods or services - without using a system of exchange, such as money.  For bartering to occur between two people, both would need to have what the other wants.

This is where a new social bartering site called Splug.com helps facilitate the trading. Let's introduce two people directly involved with the new community:

Mark Klein (Founder/CEO) and Mike Saffert (Senior Product Manager) are two of the main players involved in launching the new barter website, Splug.com. Mark was in charge of video promotion and post-production at Epic Records in the days of Michael Jackson, Gloria Estefan, Oasis, and many others. He then went on to start a successful music promotion company and then DXagency, one of the very first all-digital engagement firms in the country.

After years touring and releasing albums with his band Hidden In Plain View, Mike eventually found himself joining the team in DX's accounts department. Mike is huge into vinyl trading and has been known to make a barter or two for various breweriana.

Spurred by their backgrounds in music and the growing popularity of collecting vinyl, Mark & Mike have targeted vinyl records as one of the first categories to populate on Splug.com Here’s what they had to say about their new site:

RB: What is the goal of Splug.com?

MK: Actually the goal is for “Splug" to become a verb. Just like people “FedEx” or “eBay” something, we want them to say “I’ll Splug it” when they want to trade something with their friends.

MS: There are a lot of sites out there where you can just trade one type of item like vinyl or video games. We wanted to create a community where you could trade anything for anything else, a guitar for a surfboard or therapeutic massages for accounting work.

MK: Absolutely. We see house painters painting beach houses and then getting a free week’s seaside vacation. It’s all about the collaborative economy. People have fun trading with each other, particularly when they know they can trust their trading partners.

RB: What does the name mean and where did it come from?

MK: Great question. Splug is short for Social Plug. As society moves toward a cash less economy, we wanted to build a community where you could use social media to create a safe and trusted environment to barter for things you want. So “Splug’ was a catchy name that seemed to sum it all up.

RB: Why should a user choose Splug over other retailers/vendors?

MS: Well, to begin, Splug isn’t a retailer or a vendor. It’s a community made of collectors. And the urge to collect never goes away, even if your interests change. Everybody has lots of things in their closets they aren’t using or collecting any more, so Splug lets you peer in each other others closets and make great trades. It’s actually a pretty ‘green’ way of sharing still usable items. Tons of things can be recycled and find happy homes with new owners.

MK: Not to mention, it’s fun. I’m a serious collector of pinball machines. After I had been collecting a while, I realized the hunt is always more fun than the kill. Locating what you want and then horse trading to make a great deal is really the fun part.

RB: How is your site different, what will make it 'tick'?

MK: Different from what? It’s pretty much different from everything else because it brings together people with common interests to trade things they really care about. Being able to share those interests in a trusted environment is what makes it tick. We use social sites as filters so you can determine who you feel comfortable Splugging with. Sites like Craigslist and even eBay have a lot of anonymity and uncertainty built in … you never really know who you’re dealing with. On Splug, you can trade with just your Facebook friends, friends or friends or everyone. You set your own level of trust.

MS: Another great differentiator is that you can list ‘wants’ on Splug. If I’m looking for something special, I list it as a want. If you happen to have that certain something, you can search the ‘wants,' find me, and then send me a trade offer.

RB: Will there be seller ratings?

MS: Yes, you'll be able to give star ratings to users you conduct Splug trades with.

RB: Who pays for shipping?

MK: That’s part of the negotiation. A lot of the trades will likely be between local friends so the exchanges can take place in person. On long distance trades, the trading parties can work out the logistics using the instant messaging feature that is built right in to Splug to work out all the details. And to make it all very easy to use, we’re integrating one-click shipping.

RB: How do you support/make right any problems between traders?

MS: Splug is not actually a party to the trade, think of it more as a venue. But because of the social nature of the site, the Splug community will play a huge role. No one wants all of their friends to know they screwed someone in what was supposed to be a fair deal.

MK: Plus, if you’re trading with a friend of a friend, you can 'pre-qualify’ your prospective trading partner by checking him out with your friend to make sure he’s a reliable and honest person that you would want to Splug with.

RB: If a person doesn't have a FaceBook account, can they still participate on Splug?

MK: Yes, we’re working on integrating direct Splug sign-up right now. Next up will be LinkedIn integration, which will be great for the business trading community, and then Google+.

MS: Thanks for the opportunity to talk with you, Robert. Before we sign off, I want to let everyone know I’m really into collecting vinyl from The Bouncing Souls. If you have anything interesting, list it on Splug and I’ll be talking to you soon!

For vinyl record collectors, Splug offers a way to trade unwanted or duplicate records in their collections - for records they have been searching for; all in a trusted social community.  Try finding that at an online vinyl record vendor or a local record store.  Finding and acquiring vinyl records has just moved into the 21st century with Splug!

On a personal note, I want to thank Mark, Mike and John for their time, this new age vinyl social media club just may be what record collectors worldwide have been clamoring for.   I am impressed by the easy to use platform (yes I have some record listed!) in which to post your records and the overall ease of use of the site.  This is online crate digging at its finest, so come on over and start posting some records, it's fun and who knows, you just might find that record you have been searching for.

But the phenomenal part of Splug, is that the site isn't limited to vinyl; you can trade for just about anything, opening up new avenues for collectors worldwide!

Blonde Redhead - Barragán

LP is packaged in a custom die--cut cover and inner sleeve with “peel and reveal” sticker insert. A digital download also included in the LP package. They certainly weren’t clear when twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace and Kazu Makino first found themselves playing and writing together back in the mid-- 90s. At a time when the musical landscape was defined by the sullen, narcotic rage of grunge, and counterpointed by the purist, politicised undergrounds of Olympia, Washington and Washington DC, Blonde Redhead simply did not fit in anywhere. This indivisible trio of aliens -- decorous, poetic, hermetic; dedicated to espresso and tea and a glass of red wine with dinner -- were out of place in New York City, never mind the rest of America. It was only when, in 1997, they were invited to tour with Fugazi – who showed them a thing or two about being a band – that Blonde Redhead even saw the rest of the country where they had impulsively ended up living and working. Perversely, the experience helped to define them, and the long process of carving out a niche for their singular music began.

And they’re still here. It’s almost too obvious to mention that Blonde Redhead have never made records for fame, or for money, or to ape their teenage heroes, or to indulge any of the dumb, ephemeral impulses that clog up the blogosphere with dumb, ephemeral music. They make music, simply, because they have to. Over 8 increasingly distinctive and assured albums, they have developed a sonic language of their own: rapt, wistful, plangent, with melodies coiling like smoke through thickets of whispering electronics, anchored by nuanced, sensual rhythms. The liquid grace of their output redeems and resolves the precarious circumstances of its creation.

The New Pornographers - Brill Bruisers

Brill Bruisers is the first new release in four years from the acclaimed supergroup the New Pornographers, who NPR called “virtually peerless in the world of power-pop and indie-rock.” Additionally, the New Yorker describes the band’s music as “magnificent and clever.” “This is a celebration record,” in the worlds of the lead-singer and main songwriter A.C. Newman, and that describes it perfectly – massively melodic, joyous pop music helmed by the soaring vocals of Neko Case, Dan Bejar and Newman himself.

Back to Land by Wooden Shjips Available Via Thrilljockey

Wooden Shjips’ rise to prominence from the psychedelic underground to the rock and roll overground has been a steady sojourn. With each consecutive release, the band has found new ways of transforming heady psychedelic rock into minimalist masterpieces, bridging the gap between the woozy freeness of Les Rallizes Denudes and Crazy Horse and the tightly wound simplicity of Suicide and the Velvet Underground. Back To Land, the quartet’s follow-up to West, is the first Wooden Shjips record to be conceived outside of San Francisco. Ripley Johnson and Omar Ahsanuddin moved to Oregon, where the lush climates became a major influence on the songwriting. The band’s scope expanded to include more earthy, grounded tones, such as the acoustic guitar, without abandoning their modernist psych core.

There is an increased brightness to many of the songs on Back To Land, an easiness with which the band has flirted with in the past but never fully realized until now. The nervy urgency of West has evolved into an assured confidence, from the alliterative, interlocking guitar and organ groove of “Ruins” to the languidly compelling guitar solos of “Servants.” The addition of the acoustic guitar to the band’s textural palate is coupled here with some of the most melodically direct songs the band has written.

Still, there are still plenty of signature Shjips songs, with distorted riffs, modal keys, and a steady, crisp drum sound unfolding intensely while the elongated melodic guitar lines drift in and out of the foreground. On Back to Land this energy is captured in clear detail, designed as an immersive experience rather than a passive blasting. Back To Land was laid to tape at Jackpot Recording Studios in Portland by Kendra Lynn and mixed by Larry Crane. It was recorded over an 11-day session, resulting in some of the most detailed and spacious recordings of their career.

EVERLY BROTHERS - VERY BEST OF

The Very Best Of The Everly Brothers is a reminder to all of us as to what exactly constitutes real music. Hearing the duo's impeccable harmonies and the way that their voices intertwine on hits like "Cathy's Clown", "Bye Bye Love", "Devoted To You" and "All I Have To Do Is Dream" are enough to bring a person to tears.

This 31-track collection on a double LP serves to remind us that The Everly Brothers were indeed one of a kind. We are beyond lucky to have this music to remember them.

FLEETWOOD MAC - BLUES JAM IN CHICAGO VOL. 1 & 2

Blues Jam In Chicago Vol. 1 & 2 was the result of a recording session with Fleetwood Mac in early 1969 at Chess Records in Chicago, home to Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, amongst others. Then a young British blues band, Peter Green, John McVie, guitarists Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer and Mick Fleetwood jammed with a number of famous Chicago Blues artists from whom they drew inspiration. Since the Peter Green-led Fleetwood Mac was so directly influenced by Chicago blues, the session acts as a kind of stylistic homecoming for the band.

The following Windy City Blues legends were present at this single-day session: Otis Spann, David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Buddy Guy, Walter "Shakey" Horton, J. T. Brown, Willie Dixon and S.P. Leary. Willie Dixon oversaw the proceedings, and can be heard during the between-song banter giving directions and chastising Walter "Shakey" Horton for missing his cues.

Originally released in two volumes, we've combined them into one powerful package!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • Remastered audio
  • Jams with Otis Spann, Willie Dixon, Shakey Horton, J.T. Brown, Guitar Buddy, Honeyboy Edwards, S.P. Leary

YUSEF LATEEF - THE GENTLE GIANT

The Gentle Giant is an great Souljazz album by multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef recorded in 1970 and 1971. Backing up Lateef are seasoned Jazz players like Eric Gale, Chuck Rainey, Albert Heath and Ray Bryant, guaranteing a well defined album that offers an insight in his unique musicianship with a small ensemble of focused and singular-minded players.

At a time when funk and fusion were merging with the intensely volatile and distrustful mood of the U.S., Lateef's brand of Detroit Soul evolved from his earlier Hard Bop Jazz and World music innovations. The Gentle Giant is an appropriate title, as Lateef's levitational flute looms large over the Rhythm & Blues beats central to the equation. Kenny Barron's Fender Rhodes electric piano is also a sign of the times.

This is a prime example of a post-Bitches Brew, pre-Weather Report/Headhunters Jazz album that put Lateef in many respects to the forefront of the Fusion movement. On 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 1, 2014

DEAR JERRY: As you know from numerous other readers, the producers of television shows always seem to avoid including any information in the credits about the recordings heard in the film --especially frustrating when it's the main theme and played at the beginning of every episode!

Such is the case with the music that kicks off HBO's "True Detective."

What intrigues me most about this tune is it is by a male-female duo who sound like Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, and their hits "Lady Bird" and "Summer Wine."

I know Hazelwood died but maybe it's something they recorded in the 1960s.
—Heather Montel, Terre Haute, Ind.

DEAR HEATHER: The adopted "True Detective" theme, at least for Season 1, may remind you of 1960s songs by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, but that's the extent of the connection.

The singers are Brett and Rennie Sparks, a husband and wife collaboration who, for about 20 years, have recorded and performed as the Handsome Family.

"True Detective," the Emmy-winning drama starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, uses Brett and Rennie's composition "Far from Any Road" as its theme.

"Far from Any Road" is one of 13 tracks on the Handsome Family's 2003 album, "Singing Bones" (Carrot Top 036).

DEAR JERRY: I would like a list of notable vinyl era releases played in the U.S. that are all or mostly in a foreign language.

I know you have mentioned a few in previous columns, but in a different context. No where can I find them all in one place, but you seem to have the resources to do it.
—Darwin Graham, Marysville, Calif.

DEAR DARWIN: You're right. There are scattered references but usually to just a few. There is nothing that attempts to be comprehensive.

Even our list does not have every one made, but it's a good start and we can add to it as new entries are discovered.

Not all of these are completely in another language, but I'll include them as long as a significant percentage is. Also, space does not allow for listing more than two titles for any artist:

ABBA (Swedish / Spanish) "Fernando" (1976); "Fernando" (1976)
Steve Allen and His Orchestra with the Copacabana Trio (Spanish) "Cuando Calienta El Sol (When the Sun Is Hot)" (1963)
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass (Portuguese) "Zazueira" (1969)

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Sanctuary (Pre-Order) by Iron Maiden

BMG and INgrooves Music Group will follow the 2012/13 IRON MAIDEN vinyl picture disc reissues of the first eight Iron Maiden albums, which spanned the 1980s, with brand new pressings of the albums in heavyweight 180g black vinyl in the United States.

In conjunction with these premium album releases, a strictly limited one-off run of the 7'' singles from each respective album will be made available. These highly collectable black vinyl singles will be cut from the original UK analogue master tapes. Released in replica artwork packaging, this will be the first time ever that these black vinyl singles have officially been made available in the U.S. and sure to become a must-have item for fans, collectors and anyone who missed out first time round.

The release of these high quality, black vinyl records offers optimum choice to fans who would like to own a piece of Maiden's authentic 1980's vinyl sound, or for those simply wanting to rediscover this much loved, iconic format. Coupled with the end of the Maiden England World Tour which began in North America in 2012 and finished last month at Knebworth Park's Sonisphere Festival in the UK, this now completes Maiden's 1980's touring and catalogue reissues cycle, so the band are free to focus on their dynamic future plans.

Watch Dogs (Pre-Order) by Brian Reitzell

Following on from the phenomenal success of their RSD release of FAR CRY 3: BLOOD DRAGON’s, Invada partner with Ubisoft Music and dive once again into the world of video game soundtracks with the release of Brian Reitzell's musical score to the highly-anticipated WATCH_DOGS. Full of infectious beats and atmospheric, retro-futuristic synths, the score is a further achievement from Reitzell, who has previously written music for drama series HANNIBAL as well as working on multiple scores with director Sofia Coppola. To represent the varied challenges of the game, Reitzell brings an eclectic feel to the score, with thumping beats and off-kilter melodies of the club scene juxtaposed with the more ethereal and atmospheric synth and guitar, evoking the music of Vangelis and Brian Eno - ideal for a post-noir cyberpunk game.

TV Eyes Self-Titled LP Up For Pre-Order

Alternative super group gets its first international release!

Jason Falkner, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. and Brian Reitzell have quite a musical history. Manning and Falkner—once bandmates in Jellyfish—have gone on to success as solo acts, or as members of groups including The Three O’Clock, The Grays, Imperial Drag, and The Moog Cookbook. Brian Reitzell, once the drummer for Redd Kross and Air, turned his talents to film and television, supervising and composing music for several films directed by Sofia Coppola, including The Virgin Suicides and the Academy Award nominated Lost In Translation (for which he, along with Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, was nominated for a BAFTA award.) Currently, Reitzell composes music for the NBC-TV drama Hannibal.

But, together, they were TV Eyes.

Their 2006 self-titled debut was only released in Japan, now out of print, and commanding top dollar on the collector market. Omnivore Recordings is going to rectify that situation with a CD and 2-LP expanded edition. The release features nine tracks from TV Eyes, plus 3 bonus tracks from the Japanese only EP Softcore—each of which is a song from TV Eyes, remixed by a member of the band. If that wasn’t enough, the reissue also includes the first CD appearance of “She’s A Study,” which was featured in the aforementioned Lost In Translation, and previously only available on a white label, promo 12” single a decade ago.

For its first ever issue on vinyl, the double LP will be pressed on translucent yellow vinyl, and includes a download card. The packaging for both formats will include photos and liner notes from the band’s Jason Falkner.

Release date: 10/7/2014

Rational Youth & Psyche. Thunderstruck / Underrated. 3x 7" Vinyl (Clear, White, Orange)

It happened this year in Sweden. Rational Youth reunited for their first shows in Europe in well over a decade, supported by fellow-Canadian, though now long-time ex-pats Psyche. Both artists have a dedicated fan-following, and whether you take Unveiling the Secret or Cold War Night Life, The Crawler or Holiday in Bangkok, both artists have left an undeniable mark on the synthpop scene both in Canada and in Europe.

We are not really sure who came up with the admittedly kitsch idea of covering the AC/DC classic Thunderstruck, but after seeing it performed live as an encore from Stockholm to Malmo, we were sold. The familiar melody makes a killer analogue synthline, and the vocal performances by Tracy Howe and Darrin Huss are bang-on. Surely, tongues are firmly planted in cheeks on this one, but you've never had more fun, and after all that is what synthpop is all about. It's also a revenge song of sorts: Psyche's Synthpop revenge on all those years of bullying by AC/DC fans for listening to New Wave stuff like Gary Numan while in high school. By having fun with such an iconic stadium rock tune, the artists are bridging a gap in diversity.

The exclusive b-side Underrated is an original track that combines the best elements of Psyche and Rational Youth, with Howe's almost deadpan style creating the perfect counterpoint to Huss' crooning. Underrated is a spontaneous electro wonder created by Kevin Komoda, and brought to a frenetic final statement on unsung heroes by Darrin, Tracy, as well as Gaenor Howe on vocals.

The 7" vinyl is released on Artoffact Records in three colours:

1. Shot-glass clear, limited to 100 copies.
2. Can I come again please? white, limited to 150 copies.
3. Texas cheeseburger cheese orange, limited to 250 copies.

The record comes in a 3mm spined-sleeve and is a design replica of the original 1990 Australian-issue sleeve for AC/DC's own Thunderstruck 7". Both the iconic thunderbolt and the artist logos are done in a silver pantone. MP3 download coupon is also included.

This package gives you one copy of each of the colours available of the Rational Youth / Psyche 7" vinyl. YOU GET 3 COMPLETE SLEEVES, WITH ONE 7" VINYL IN EACH SLEEVE.

Debut Album from Sylvie Simmons Available For Pre-Order From LightInTheAttic

We're happy to announce this sweet album by the great Sylvie Simmons: a NEW recording for us here at Light in the Attic, but it was so beautiful we couldn't resist. Sylvie is haunting and out-of-time, but it is also a brand-new, original debut album by a singer-writer who has been making music since she was a little girl but just for herself. The raw, delicate, and sensual songs about love and love gone wrong are performed on a ukulele, which here sounds like a broken harp or a heartbroken guitar. Late last year, in a gap between tours, Howe Gelb of Giant Sand lured Sylvie to the desert where they recorded live to tape in Wavelab Studio in Tucson with Thoger Lund playing upright bass and Howe, who produced the album, backing her brilliantly on guitar, synthesizers, and piano.

Born in London, she'd felt the pull of America since childhood and ran away to LA in the late seventies to write about music, convinced she'd never have the nerve to perform it. She became renowned as a rock writer (she's the subject of a BBC documentary, The Rock Chick) and also as an acclaimed author. Her books include the cult fiction Too Weird For Ziggy and biographies Serge Gainsbourg: A Fistful of Gitanes and I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen. Following numerous movements across the globe-including three years in a tumbledown French chateau- she now lives in San Francisco.

•Produced by Howe Gelb and Chris Schultz (track 6 only)
•Debut album by esteemed writer and Leonard Cohen biographer Sylvie Simmons
•LP housed in “tip-on” gatefold Stoughton jacket
•Lyric booklet included
•Color vinyl editions:
200 on “Forest Marbled” wax (LITA Vinyl Subscriber exclusive)
100 on “Turquoise” wax (LITA.net pre-orders exclusive, limit 2 per customer)

Pre-order Sylvie, out October 28th, on CD, vinyl, and digital. First 100 pre-orders will receive turquoise colored wax!
