lovely story, we love our vinyl!

Vinyl record sales increase in Iowa City, nationwide

BY LUKE VOELZ

Greg Markus was bored at his friend’s cabin in Galena, Iowa. The lakeside house was dusty, cramped and almost completely devoid of electronic entertainment.

The 14-year-old’s opinion changed when he saw a weathered record player in the basement, flanked by a row of vinyl albums — also known as LPs — from the seventies. He found an album he often listened to on CD, Neil Young’s “Harvest,” and placed the needle on top. Young’s sonorous croon lit up the basement, delivered with a clarity Markus said he never heard on CD or MP3.

“I’ll never buy CDs again — stupid plastic cases, little discs,” said Markus, now 22.

another enjoys vinyl to mend her blues

Revolving With Sinatra On Vinyl

by Laura-Anne Rowell

Lighting a candle and having a mixed drink after a breakup that cannot be mended. Searching for a kinship that will validate your pain you reach for the classic sound of vinyl

Whether you are into the blues of Leadbelly or the vixen calls of Julie London validating your pain, the one who all can’t resist is the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra vinyl LPs, telling your story.

The reason is while hearing a classic vinyl you can still feel the ache of the moments that were captured in all their wonderous imperfections. Modern equipment has ruined the true vocalist sounds with their snores of perfection.

U2, Bon Jovi & Elton John Top Forbes' List of Highest Paid Musicians

It's a new world in the music industry. You probably won't make a lot of money on your recordings. If you have a really good brand, you might make some money in licensing, but the real money, the big dollars, comes from touring.

That's what was proven by the twenty-five artists named to Forbes annual list of the World's Highest Paid Musicians. The vast majority of the artists on the list made their money from touring, including the top paid act, U2, who continue with their 360 Degree World Tour. The same goes for the rest of the top five who have all had big tours.

and in music history for today:

In 1955, after a month of booking gigs in larger venues in Dallas and Houston, Colonel Tom Parker arranges a meeting with Elvis Presley's manager, Bob Neal, which results in an agreement that will see the Colonel handle Presley's show dates and career strategy from now on.

In 1963, the Rolling Stones released their first UK single, "Come On", which would peak at #21.

In 1964, Jay and The Americans record the Tex-Mex hit, "Come A Little Bit Closer", which would climb to number 3 in the US by the following November.

In 1967, the Hollies' "Carrie Ann" is released in the US, where it will reach #9.

Moby Grape released 5 singles simultaneously on CBS Records in 1967.

In 1971, Carole King saw her "Tapestry" album hit number 1 in the US for the first of 15 consecutive weeks. The LP contained such classic tracks as "It's Too Late", "I Feel the Earth Move", "So Far Away", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" and "You've Got a Friend". The Grammy Award winning disc is considered by many to be one of the best Rock 'n' Roll albums of all time.

In 1978, Andy Gibb became the first solo artist in the history of Billboard's Hot 100 to have his first three releases reach number one when "Shadow Dancing" hit the top of the chart. Since then, Michael Jackson had four number ones in a row and Mariah Carey had five. "Shadow Dancing" would be the best selling single in the US in 1978, but was only a #42 hit in the UK.

Led Zeppelin began their last tour in 1980.

In 1987, a St. Petersburg, Florida real estate agent named Vittoria Holman sued Mötley Crüe and a concert promoter for hearing loss allegedly incurred at a concert in December 1985. Holman and her daughter had front row seats less than 10 feet (3 meters) from a wall of speakers. The case was settled out of court when the band's insurance company paid Holman over $30,000. huh?

In 1997, Ozzy Osbourne cancelled his solo set and his reunion with Black Sabbath, scheduled for an Ozzfest tour stop at the Polaris Amphitheatre near Columbus, Ohio. Osbourne claimed he had lost his voice. Other groups on the bill performed as scheduled but disappointed fans set fires and damaged the outdoor facility. Twenty-three people were arrested and three were slightly hurt. Osbourne and Black Sabbath played a make-up date two weeks later.

In 2007, the Traveling Wilburys' "Collection" rose to the top of the UK album chart. The Wilburys consisted of George Harrison, (Nelson Wilbury), Jeff Lynne, (Otis Wilbury), Roy Orbison, (Lefty Wilbury), Tom Petty, (Charlie T. Wilbury Jr.) and Bob Dylan, (Lucky Wilbury).

birthdays today include (among others) Eric Stefani (No Doubt) (44), Greg Rolie (Santana) (64), Barry Manilow (68) and Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) (53).
