Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Rhino Records Announces Black Sabbath Vinyl Reissues

Rhino Records have just announced the July 30th vinyl reissues of three Black Sabbath's 1970's releases including 'Technical Ecstasy,' 'Never Say Die!' and 'We Sold Our Souls For Rock ‘N’ Roll.'
Sabbath’s seventh studio album, 'Technical Ecstasy,' was released in September of 1976. The LP continued the band's separation from its signature doom and darkness that had been such a trademark of their early career. While the album's lyrics dealt with topics such as drug dealers, prostitution, and transvestites, the music itself was seldom dark, including tracks like “Rock 'n' Roll Doctor,” “Dirty Women” and “It's Alright.”  (the latter sung by drummer Bill Ward—a decision supported by Ozzy Osbourne), which were all very different from the band's earlier recordings.

'Never Say Die!' was the band's eighth studio LP released in 1978 and the last Sabbath studio album until 2013 with Ozzy Osbourne before he was fired from the group in 1979.  In the UK the title-track, released well-ahead of the album and the band's first UK picture-sleeve single, reached #21 in the chart and gave the band its first Top Of The Pops appearances since 1970.

'We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'N' Roll' was released on December 1, 1975 in the UK and on February 3, 1976 in the US.  It is a double-album compilation of the band’s first six records and includes the Black Sabbath staples such as "The Wizard," "War Pigs," "Paranoid," "Iron Man," "Sweet Leaf," "Fairies Wear Boots" and "N.I.B.;" among others.  In the US the RIAA certified the album as Gold in February 1980, Platinum in May 1986, and 2x Multi-Platinum in March 2000.

Black Sabbath - 13

The drum tracks on the album were laid down by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE sticksman Brad Wilk following original drummer Bill Ward's decision to bow out of the reunion. Osbourne went on the BBC in England to discuss the band's new single, "God Is Dead?" and the inspiration behind the track. Ozzy explained, "I was in somebody's office and there was a magazine on a table and it just said, 'God Is Dead', and I suddenly thought about 9/11 and all these terrorist things and religion and how many people have died in the name of religion. When you think about the tragedy that's happened throughout time, it just came in my head. You'd think by now that their God would have stopped people dying in the name of, so I just starting thinking that people must be thinking, 'Where is God? God is dead' and it just hit me."

Prince Of Darkness – Blue vinyl

In association with Alan Howarth we are very happy to be continuing our series of John Carpenter / Alan Howarth re-issues with Prince Of Darkness, this is undoubtedly one of Carpenters Darkest and most underrated films and the score complements the images perfectly. This has to be one of the most understated, atmospheric and downright scary soundtracks ever made. Carpenter and Howarth keep it simple with oodles of tension, listen to this late at night in the dark and you won’t be going to sleep anytime soon !
