New Wilco Album Due This Fall

Bryan Wawzenek

Not only can Wilco fans expect a new album from the alt-rockers this fall, they can expect it to be delivered via the band’s own record label. The Chicago band’s eighth studio album, tentatively titled Get Well Soon Everybody, will be their first on dBpm, to be distributed through ANTI.

Frontman Jeff Tweedy told RollingStone.com that the album is in the mixing stages and that the band recorded more than 20 songs, “out of the things I had coming in, which was somewhere in the fifties and sixties. It’s a pretty great time for me writing-wise.”

Ozzy Osbourne Surprised People Still Ask About Bat-Biting Incident

It's been 29 years since the night Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a bat onstage, and he's still wondering why people still ask him about it.

"One of the things that amazes me is, even now people go, 'So Ozzy, did you really bite the head off a bat?'" Osbourne said a press conference at the Tribeca Film Festival on Monday. "If you didn't know, then you must be living in a cave."

Punk icon (X-ray Spex frontwoman) Poly Styrene passes away

Marianne Elliot Said
July 3rd 1957- April 25th 2011

Poly Styrene was a punk amongst punks. A groundbreaking presence that left an unrepeatable mark on the musical landscape, she made history the moment she uttered, "Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard but I think oh bondage up yours!" The influence of Poly and X-ray Spex has been felt far and wide ever since. Their landmark album Germ Free Adolescents is a landmark work and a primary influence on Britpop and Riot Grrrl. At the centre of it was PolyStyrene, a bi-racial feminist punk with the perfect voice to soundtrack rebellion. Poly never sacrificed the intelligence or the fun in her music and style. Her trademark braces and dayglo clothes were a playful rejection of the status quo and of conformity and complacency. She dissected gender politics, consumer culture, and the obsessions of modern life in a way that made us all want sing along with her.

At the core of Poly's work from Germ Free Adolescents through Generation Indigo, is a revolutionary with a genuine love for this world and the people and things in it. Her indomitable heart is all over the new material from her championing of cruelty free products ("I Luv Ur Sneakers") to giving voice to marginalized poor people worldwide ("No Rockefeller") to tackling racism ("Colour Blind"). Poly Styrene never stopped exciting us with her incisive world-view, amazing wit, and her adventurous sound. It is impossible to imagine what modern music would be like without her incalculable contributions but it's probably not worth imagining a world that never had Poly Styrene in it.

A thrilling work from a true pioneer and rebel in every sense, Poly Styrene's album Generation Indigo is out now through Future Noise Music and was produced by Youth (The Verve, Killing Joke, The Fireman, Edwyn Collins). The album received rave reviews from Uncut, NME, The Guardian and countless others across the Atlantic. The forward looking Generation Indigo showcases Poly's humorous musings on pop culture, the internet and fashion whilst also tackling heavier subject matter (war and racism) with her politically aware and intelligent lyrics all in the inimitable voice of a genuine icon.

Algonquin Records Celebrates 35 Years in Business

With small businesses closing left and right, this is truly a milestone.

By Nicole Marie Nalls

During the last decade, downloading may have become the preferred method of acquiring music, but long before there were CDs, MP3s and iPods there were vinyl records. Although records have decreased in popularity and many stores stopped selling them or went the way of Woolworths and closed for good, records have remained popular with collectors and some stores kept with the times without abandoning their original vision.

Algonquin Records, which recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, is a Des Plaines staple and testament to the loyalty of music fans across the decades. Owner Dan Malapanes is an avid music lover who opened Algonquin in 1976. The store now carries new and used records, cassettes, CDs, DVDs and used books in prices that range from as low as .25 cents for used items to $80 for new box-sets.

and in music history for today:

In 1967, 16 year old Janis Ian sings "Society Child" on the CBS-TV show, Inside Pop - The Rock Revolution. A year before, the song was banned by many radio stations because of its interracial love affair theme. Following her television appearance, the record shot into the US Top Twenty.

In 2007, during opening statements in Phil Spector's murder trial, defense attorney Bruce Cutler told the jury that before police even had a cause of death, they had murder on their mind. "Fame and success come back to haunt you." After months of testimony, jurors would announce a deadlock of ten for guilty and two for not guilty. The judge then declared a mistrial and a new trial was slated to begin in August, 2008. Spector was convicted on April 14th, 2009.
