Vinyl Art - by Daniel Edlen

my vinyl record friend Daniel Edlen is still painting masterpieces with old, unusable vinyl, see the amazing show and stop by his site (by the way, these wonderful pieces of art make the perfect gift!)

a recent email from Daniel:

I got to paint 4 pieces for a very cool corporate client. I'm hoping they'll share it publicly so I can tell you who, but in the meantime below is the high quality final shot of all 4 especially for you. Only the CEO of the client company has seen it too.

MURDER CONSTRUCT - Results LP

MURDER CONSTRUCT discharge their ear shattering debut full-length, Results, with the force of an early morning napalm strike. Boasting an all-star line up of notorious death metal and grindcore veterans including Travis Ryan (CATTLE DECAPITATION), Danny Walker (EXHUMED, INTRONAUT) and Leon Del Muerte (EXHUMED, IMPALED), MURDER CONSTRUCT pummel and pound their way through eleven tracks of bloodthirsty rage. The quintet set forth a lethal dose of death/grind, combining razor sharp guitars, machine gun blasts and homicidal growls with their own twisted brand of experimentation. Results is a violent, uncompromising display of top-notch musicianship and cutthroat songwriting that is sure to leave the listener outlined in chalk.

of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

of Montreal has been on a tear as of late: releasing two acclaimed albums (2004's Satanic Panic In The Attic and 2005's The Sunlandic Twins), all the while spreading its dance party-inducing live shows to the masses.

Now, with Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, of Montreal has created its masterpiece. It is an irresistible and remarkable album, sounding like a logical extension of the erratic indie-disco sounds of The Sunlandic Twins.

However, Hissing Fauna is also the most personal of Montreal album to date, with Kevin Barnes, lead of Montreal songwriter, pouring tremendous amounts of emotion, heartbreak, frustration and elation into its twelve tracks.

Written and recorded primarily during what he calls "an insane year," Hissing Fauna sees Barnes adopt a new writing style. It's an unabashedly autobiographical attempt from a songwriter whose early material tended towards characters and story-songs.

Barnes continues down the whimsical pop funk path, while changing up its lyrical scope; and Hissing Fauna balances its poppy nature while showcasing brutal and unflinching honesty.

2xLP + Instant MP3 - (180 Gram Black)

Band Of Horses – Infinite Arms 180 Gram Vinyl Reissue

Columbia has reissued the Band of Horses album, “Infinite Arms” on 180 Gram vinyl which is due out on July 3rd. This album has been out of print for some time now!

"Band of Horses have left Sub Pop and arrived at Ben Bridwell's Brown (and Fat Possum/Columbia) for their new album Infinite Arms. Visually, though, they haven't strayed too far from Cease to Begin's nightscape. There's less water and more mountainous swirls, but like the previous cover image, the sky was captured by photographer Christopher Wilson. The band produced Infinite with help from Phil Ek. It was recorded over sixteen months in various locations featuring a beefed-up lineup that includes the core of Ben Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, and Ryan Monroe with longtime touring members Tyler Ramsey and Bill Reynolds providing additional hands. As a nod to the new lineup, Bridwell is quoted as saying 'in many ways, this is the first Band of Horses record.' But we know it's actually their third." - Stereogum

KISS To Release New Album In October

KISS are set to release their 20th studio album, 'Monster,' in October. There are 12 tracks in all, which are collaborations between co-founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, with guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer.  The effort was produced by Paul Stanley with Greg Collins at Conway Studios in Hollywood and The Nook in Studio City, California.

On July 2, “Hell or Hallelujah” will be available as a digital single and gets a physical release the next day.

Stanley says it is “a battle cry that encapsulates the entire record... one way or another, we’re going to do it our way.”  “There are no symphony orchestras, boy choirs, keyboards, outside producers or songwriters on this album,” promises Gene Simmons. “The best thing we did was to turn inwards to ourselves. Tommy [Thayer] and Eric [Singer] have revitalized this band, with a work ethic and the talent to back it up. This is a real band effort. KISS has become a behemoth. We’re going where no bands have gone before.”

Rare Sex Pistols Acetate Sells For Over $19,000

by: Karen 'Gilly' Laney

Hearing that a Sex Pistols ‘God Save The Queen’ single sold for over $19,000 on eBay is probably enough to make sardonic singer Johnny Rotten’s middle fingers fly high. It’s hard to imagine that a band whose message was so anti-establishment merits such monetary value on an institutionalized auction site.

LOCRIAN

The Clearing & The Final Epoch
Relapse Records
Release: 14 August 2012

For the better part of a decade Chicago’s Locrian have been creating sprawling, blackened drone masterpieces. With ‘The Clearing’ (previously release in late 2011 on vinyl only) Locrian’s signature sound of ominous crescendos mixed with powerful atmospherics and pulverizing tension reached its highest point to date, earning the record glowing reviews across the board from Decibel Magazine to Pitchfork. Now renamed ‘The Clearing/The Final Epoch’ the record is finally available in CD form complete with a full second CD consisting of almost an hour of rare and unreleased material. Limited edition first pressing comes housed in a gorgeous mini “tip-on” gatefold LP package.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 25, 2012

DEAR JERRY: When Davy Jones of the Monkees died (Feb. 29), I realized that I can no longer think of any of the Top 50 groups of the 1960s, whose original members are all living.

More specifically, I mean ones having three or more people, and continuously billed with just a group name, unlike Eric Burdon and the Animals or Diana Ross and the Supremes.

If there aren't any from the 1960s, what are the chances of there being any from the '50s?
—Kenny Hammond, Austin, Texas

DEAR KENNY: Even with the Monkees now off the table, I can still think of seven 1960s groups that meet your qualifications.

There are even two groups whose careers peaked in the '50s, with original members not only living, but, at times, still performing.

Groups are listed chronologically based on their first U.S. hit, with current ages of each member:

(1954) McGuire Sisters: Christine (82); Dorothy (84); Phyllis (81)
(1959) Fleetwoods: Gretchen Christopher (18, she's a leap year baby); Gary Troxel (72); Barbara Ellis (72)

I suppose you know, Simon & Garfunkel (including their Tom & Jerry years) and the Everly Brothers would be high among the 1950s and '60s acts if duos counted. But since this is your question, you get to set the parameters.

Now to the 1960s:

(1961) Lettermen: Jim Pike (75); Bob Engemann (76); Tony Butala (73)
(1964) Hollies: Allan Clarke (70); Graham Nash (70); Vic Steele (67); Eric Haydock (69); Don Rathbone (69); Tony Hicks (66)
(1964) Manfred Mann: Manfred Mann (71); Mike Vickers (71); Paul Jones (70); Mike Hugg (69); Tom McGuinness (70).
(1964) Kinks: Ray Davies (67); Dave Davies (69); Pete Quaife (68;) Mick Avory (68)
(1965) Vogues: Bill Burkette (69); Hugh Geyer (69); Chuck Blasko (69); Don Miller (69)
(1965) Young Rascals: Felix Cavaliere (67); Eddie Brigati (65); Gene Cornish (68); Dino Danelli (66); David Brigati (71)
(1969) Three Dog Night: Danny Hutton (69); Chuck Negron (70); Cory Wells (70)

DEAR JERRY: After seeing a Third Man Records video promoting the debut of the world's first liquid-filled record, I knew I had to have one.

Only a small quantity were made, all of which were exclusively available in Nashville, at the Third Man Record Shop, on Record Store Day 2012 (April 21st).

So I drove six hours to get there the night before, only to find about a dozen people already in line. We all spent the night on the sidewalk shivering in a miserable rainstorm.

At 10 a.m. they opened, and everyone in line got Jack White's 12-inch single of "Sixteen Saltines," a clear vinyl disc, with a psychedelic bluish liquid in the center.

Fortunately it came in a sturdy plastic cover, because during the drive home some of the liquid oozed out of the record, but was contained in the outer bag.

I finally stopped the leak by storing it upright, with the drip source at the top; however, I am hoping you can suggest a permanent fix.

If not, I fear it will lose most of its value.
—Dale Westerman, Little Rock, Ark.

DEAR DALE: Your concern is valid. It is essential that the world's first liquid-filled record actually contain some liquid, though not a full tank.

In truth, none of the special "Sixteen Saltines" liquid edition is filled to capacity, for that would seriously restrict the area in which the liquid can slosh around.

About the only place where the record could spring a leak is on the edge, where the top layer of clear vinyl bonds with the bottom layer, which is why the leak stopped when you rotated the defective spot to the top.

With it still in that position, use enough clear super glue or epoxy to clog the hole and stop the leak.

If you do a neat glue job, the value of your air-tight liquid-filled record will not be affected by the few lost drops.

IZ ZAT SO? Third Man's liquid-filled "Sixteen Saltines" is the first commercially-available record of its kind, making it a sure-fire collectible.

In the eight weeks since its IPO (initial public offering), copies have been selling on the secondary market for as little as $300 and as much as $1,200.

Now that's what I'd call a liquid asset.

Sex Pistols To Reissue Limited Edition "Pretty Vacant" 7"

The Sex Pistols recently announced that the seminal song "Pretty Vacant" will be released as a limited edition 7" picture disc on 2nd July - 35 years to the day of its original release.

Featuring one of the most iconic and distinctive guitar and drum build ups in the history of rock n’roll, topped by Johnny Rotten's bite and snarl, ‘Pretty Vacant’ with its anthemic "and we don’t care!" became another rallying cry throughout the country.

The Sex Pistol’s masterful third single arrived in the wake of the controversy that its predecessor "God Save The Queen" spread across the UK as an antidote to the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

Upon its original release 35 years ago, "Pretty Vacant" reached the top ten in the UK charts and unlike the previous two singles – "Anarchy in the UK" and "God Save The Queen" – Top Of The Pops could not ignore them, broadcasting a now iconic video of the band performing the classic song on their show. The Pistols did not appear in the BBC studio and it is widely accepted the promo video was given to the show without the band's consent.

Only 3500 limited edition 7" picture discs will be available via the Universal Music. Their legendary album ‘Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols’ will also be re-issued in September of this year as an expanded and repacked release to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of its release. More details on the reissue will follow shortly.

Vinyl’s Divine - The Devil’s Dove and Great Zeus’ Beard unveil new albums

by: Bethany Turner

Vinyl Revitalization Party
Fri.-Sat., 6/29-30
The Calico Room
107 S. Front St.

Tripp Murphy grew up listening to vinyl records. When he was a kid, there wasn’t YouTube for viewing music videos. There wasn’t iTunes for instantly downloading tracks onto a teensy handheld device. For Murphy, vinyl is enthralling because of the satisfaction that comes from unleashing the record from its sleeve, placing the disc upon its platter, and lowering the needle. He used to stare at his records, enveloping himself in the pleasure of holding something in his hands he could feel, understanding that the artist exerted real effort—not taking their creative process and diligence for granted.

The aesthetic qualities are emotionally gripping; vinyl truly does allow for a more fufilling listening experience. "MP3s are compressed, and they literally take tiny fragments of data out of it to make it smaller," Matt Keen, owner of Gravity Records, explains. "They take bits and pieces here and there out in these algorithms to where they hope that your ear won’t hear it. The more compressed it is, the lower bit rate it is, the more you can hear it. Vinyl is all analog. It’s full wave—there are no pieces missing. It has the full spectrum of sound."

For some, vinyl is about the memories. For the young ones, it’s about engaging oneself in an entirely different—and more realistic—listening experience. Both will revel in vinyl bliss this weekend, as The Calico Room (owned by Murphy) unleashes the Vinyl Revitalization Party.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 18, 2012

DEAR JERRY: One of the music trivia blogs I read talked about Phillip Phillips, the 2012 American Idol winner, and that his new single, "Home," just debuted on Billboard at No. 10.

They also state that the nine songs above him are all in the same position as last week, but they don't say how unusual that is.

They also didn't say if the entire Top 10 ever remained exactly the same for two consecutive weeks.

This information does not seem to exist anywhere.
—Jennett Swanson, Blaine, Wash.

DEAR JENNETT: Actually it does, but only for someone curious and determined enough to pour over each individual weekly survey — which is exactly what I did for you, and for future generations.

Beginning with the first week of January 1950, I reviewed the Top 10 singles on every week's chart up to now (June 9, 2012), bringing to 3,195 the total number of surveys reviewed!

Having trudged through more than 1,600 charts without an unchanged Top 10 got me thinking it probably never happened. A few pages later I finally got a bite.

The Top 10 hits for August 28, 1982 are precisely the same as the week before (Aug. 21):

1. "Eye of the Tiger" (Survivor)
2. "Hurts So Good" (John Cougar)
3. "Abracadabra" (Steve Miller Band)
4. "Hold Me" (Fleetwood Mac)
5. "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" (Chicago)
6. "Even the Nights Are Better" (Air Supply)
7. "Keep the Fire Burnin'" (REO Speedwagon)
8. "Vacation" (Go-Go's)
9. "Wasted on the Way" (Crosby, Stills & Nash)
10. "Take It Away" (Paul McCartney)

Then, against even greater odds, I noticed that numbers 11 and 12 were also unchanged from the week before:

11. "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" (Melissa Manchester)
12. "Love Is in Control (Finger on the Trigger)" (Donna Summer)

Moving forward just seven months (April 2, 1983), I found not 10 or 12, but an unchanged Top 11:

1. "Billie Jean" (Michael Jackson)
2. "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" (Culture Club)
3. "Hungry Like the Wolf" (Duran Duran)
4. "You Are" (Lionel Richie)
5. "Back on the Chain Gang" (Pretenders)
6. "We've Got Tonight" (Kenny Rogers & Sheena Easton)
7. "Mr. Roboto" (Styx)
8. "Separate Ways" (World's Apart) (Journey)
9. "One on One" (Daryl Hall & John Oates)
10. "Twilight Zone" (Golden Earring)
11. "Come On Eileen" (Dexy's Midnight Runners)

Nearly 21 years later (January 10, 2004), and now in the digital era, we find the last of these rare occurrences, once again with 12 titles:

1. "Hey Ya!" (OutKast)
2. "The Way You Move" (OutKast & Sleepy Brown)
3. "Milkshake" (Kelis)
4. "You Don't Know My Name" (Alicia Keys)
5. "Stand Up" (Ludacris & Shawnna)
6. "Walked Outta Heaven" (Jagged Edge)
7. "Suga Suga" (Baby Bash & Frankie J)
8. "Here Without You" (3 Doors Down)
9. "Slow Jamz" (Twista, Kanye West & Jamie Foxx)
10. "Me, Myself and I" (Beyonce)
11. "It's My Life" (No Doubt)
12. "Someday" (Nickleback)

In the midst of this research, I discovered three additional weeks when the Top 10 songs did not change, although two positions flip-flopped (Feb. 16, 1959; Dec. 19, 1992; and July 5, 1997). Then, in addition to the recent week you reference (June 9, 2012), there are three other weeks when positions one through nine stayed the same (Feb. 23, 1957; Jan. 17, 1981; and Jan. 25, 1997).

After all of the above was written, Mike Stenz (Riverside, Calif.) provided an accurate list of an unchanged Top 14, and one that I missed in my original research. Funny thing is, it is for the week of Aug. 19, 1978 ... and Aug. 19 is my birthday. Thank you, Mike!

1. "Three Times a Lady" (Commodores)
2. "Grease" (Frankie Valli)
3. "Last Dance" (Donna Summer)
4. "Miss You" (Rolling Stones)
5. "Hot Blooded" (Foreigner)
6. "Boogie Oogie Oogie" (A Taste of Honey)
7. "Love Will Find a Way" (Pablo Cruise)
8. "Copacabana" (Barry Manilow)
9. "Magnet and Steel" (Walter Egan)
10. "An Everlasting Love" (Andy Gibb)
11. "Hopelessly Devoted to You" (Olivia Newton-John)
12. "Life's Been Good" (Joe Walsh)
13. "My Angel Baby" (Toby Beau)
14. "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight" (Atlanta Rhythm Section)

Sandi Thom to release new album "Flesh and Blood" on August 14th

Produced by Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, Featuring duet with the iconic Buffy Sainte-Marie,

LOS ANGELES, June 19, 2012 -- /PRNewswire/ -- Scottish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sandi Thom, best known for her No.1 platinum album Smile... It Confuses People and hit single I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair), is pleased to confirm the August 14th release of her fourth studio album Flesh and Blood. Produced by the Black Crowes' Rich Robinson, and featuring a rare duet with Buffy Sainte-Marie, the album was recorded at 16 Tons studio in Nashville, Tennessee. It is Sandi's fourth album following 2010's critically acclaimed Merchants and Thieves, which won Album of the Year at the Scottish Music Awards.

The first single, Sun Comes Crashing Down is available as a free download on www.sandithom.com. It's currently No. 2 on the UK's Amazon Free Download chart.

Pre-order Flesh and Blood

Flesh and Blood is Sandi's second release on the independent label she founded and heads as CEO, Guardian Angels Records (distributed by Fontana, Universal).

The highly anticipated new album radiates the raunchy blues rock bravado of the opening track Help Me, followed by the country-flavored Leadbelly classic In The Pines. The album also features the strutting, clavinet-led Stormy Weather; and the emotionally compelling finale Lay Your Burden Down.

It features an all-star ensemble led by Black Crowes Rich Robinson, drummer Steve Gorman and fellow Black Crowes member and widely travelled session guitarist Audley Freed; respected Nashville stars Mike Webb (keys/Dobro) and James Haggerty (bass) complete the line-up with special guest performances from Rolling Stones collaborator, saxophonist Bobby Keys, and a stunning duet with the legendary singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie on her 1992 classic The Big Ones Get Away.

"Sandi really stretched herself and made a bold new album," reflects Rich Robinson, "Her songs are honest, vulnerable and very strong. Her vocal abilities are showcased really well, as is her guitar work, and harp playing. I think Sandi's made a great record. It was a joy to work with her."

Legendary classic rock producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, The Black Crowes, Joe Bonamassa) also mixed two tracks, Sun Comes Crashing Down and the duet with Buffy Sainte Marie on Big Ones Get Away.

"Sandi's writing is fantastic," says Shirley, "and her singing is wonderful. Sun Comes Crashing Down has all the right ingredients to be a hit."

The intriguingly titled I Love You Like A Lunatic, is based on her "life-changing" love affair with superstar blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. The couple has been together three years now, living and loving on and off the road. Sandi likens it to a modern-day Johnny Cash and June Carter fairy-tale. "My life just turned crazy," says Sandi. "Yet that's what everybody wants, that insane kind of love that utterly consumes you."

Sandi feels that Flesh and Blood is her coming of age album. "All I ever want to do is write songs that connect with people," says Sandi. "With this album I've finally found a place where I can make the very best music I can achieve. The people that only know me from Punk Rocker won't recognize me on this album. But they are going to find out another side of me."

Sandi first gained widespread attention from a series of webcasts she staged from her London apartment which caught the attention of RCA Records, who released her debut album Smile... It Confuses People.

With supporters such as Paul McCartney, it entered the UK album sales chart at #1 fueled by the popularity of single Punk Rocker, which won an Ivor Novello award; it was also nominated for a BRIT award and a Digital Music Award. Sandi has sold over 2 million records worldwide, reaching No. 1's in UK, Ireland, Sweden and Australia, and has headlined world-renowned festivals such as Glastonbury and the Fuji Rock Festival.

In keeping with her webcast roots, Sandi currently releases a new cover song performance each week via Facebook and Youtube. She has 5 million Youtube views and counting...

Sandi will embark on a world tour this year, visiting the US, UK, Europe and Australia.
