Musicology 101

Let's have a little fun, so here are some rock and roll nuggets so you can win at music trivia games and become a top musicologist!

In 1965, with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Mamas And Papas all turning out big hits, the Grammy Award for Best Performance By a Vocal Group was won by The Anita Kerr Singers for "We Dig Mancini".

Only Lawrence Welk has had more musical appearances on U.S. network television than Paul Revere And The Raiders!

Willie Nelson told talk show host David Letterman that the hit he wrote for Patsy Cline, "Crazy", was originally titled "Stupid."

During his "Wall of Sound" days, Phil Spector's practice was to put an instrumental on the B side of a 45 to keep disc jockeys from flipping the record over and taking attention from the A side.

CCR's John Fogerty had a notebook in which he jotted down words and names that he thought would make good song titles. At the top of his list was "Proud Mary", a phrase that brought images of a domestic washerwoman to John's mind. When he got around to putting it to music, the first few chords he used reminded him of a paddle-wheel going around. Instead of Proud Mary being a clean-up lady, she became a boat and the song is a staple at any wedding reception.

The song "Summertime Blues" was a US Top 40 hit in three different decades - in the fifties by Eddie Cochran (#8), the sixties by Blue Cheer (#14) and the seventies by The Who (#27).

Pat Benatar, who placed 15 songs in the Billboard Top 40, including "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" (#9 in 1980) and "We Belong" (#5 in 1984) and "Love Is A Battlefield," (the music video, which depicted Benatar as a teenage runaway trying to survive the mean streets of New York City, was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video) trained at Julliard as an opera singer.

Tindersticks - Tindersticks (2nd Album)

British band Tindersticks formed in 1991, renowned for their orchestral sound and their vocalist Stuart A. Staples' characteristic baritone.  Essentially the group combined the dark romanticism of Leonard Cohen, Ian Curtis, and Scott Walker with the song craft of Lee Hazlewood and the aesthetics of indie rock. This is especially apparent on their first few records, such as Tindersticks (II) their second eponymous album.

We release this modern day classic on a 180 gram vinyl double LP accompanied with a 4-page booklet.  First 1000 copies numbered and pressed on baby blue vinyl!

Dan Penn - Do Right Man

Dan Penn has Southern Soul running through his veins.  Penn started out in the early sixties as band leader of various soul combos in Alabama but remaining out of the limelight for most of his career, choosing instead writing hit songs for other artists.  He has been responsible for songs including "Is A Bluebird Blue" by Conway Twitty, "Do Right Woman Do Right Man" by Aretha Franklin, "The Letter" by The Box Tops, "I'm Your Puppet" by Bobby & James Purify, "You Left The Water Running" by Wilson Picket and Otis Redding and many more.

In 1994 Dan finally picked up the guitar and recorded these songs himself for the first time and to great effect: his renditions of "I'm Your Puppet" and "You Left The Water Running" add fragile and beautiful magic to these already great songs.  The Music On Vinyl release of Do Right Man is a must-have as it's never been released on vinyl before!

THE COLOURIST PREMIERE NEW SONG, "YES YES" ON ROLLING STONE

Be sure to catch The Colourist at COACHELLA and on tour with Metric, Youngblood Hawke and The Wombats!

After debuting their breakout single "Little Games" last month, The Colourist premiered their second athemic-indie-pop hit, "Yes Yes" today on RollingStone.com.

The Colourist first stumbled upon one another in an underused warehouse in Orange County, CA, where Adam and Maya discovered the harmonic chemistry that has come to define the band’s bright and anthemic signature sound.

"We'd had the idea for "Yes Yes" since the band started," explains drummer Maya Tuttle, "We knew a friend's relationship was near the breaking point because of a third wheel that was trying to break the two up by throwing lies into the mix. While in the studio in LA, Adam came up with an upbeat idea for the base of the song--then the four of us hunkered down and completed it. It's about not falling for the illusion that another person can fix all of your problems."

Having spent much of 2012 honing their live show with the likes of Grouplove, Electric Guest and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., The Colourist begin 2013 holed up in a small studio in Southern California. It’s there that Adam Castilla (vocals, guitar), Maya Tuttle (drums, vocals), Kollin Johannsen (guitar, bass), and Justin Wagner (bass, keys) will commit their pop-fueled, indie-bred rock to tape before embarking on their first tour which includes appearances at Coachella along with support shows with Metric, The Wombats and Youngblood Hawke.

Keep your eyes peeled for The Colourist's debut full length album coming later this year!
