LAMB - WHAT SOUND

What Sound is Manchester electronic music duo Lamb’s third release from 2001. The producer/vocal duo of Andy Barlow and Lou Rhodes is joined by session musicians Arto Lindsay on guitar, Me’Shell NdegéOcello on bass, and Michael Franti with additional vocal work. Doves guitarist Jimi Goodwin, producers Nellee Hooper and Richard Dorfmeister (of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame) also contributed to the album. The track “Heaven” was used repeatedly by the television series Six Feet Under.

Still one of the most inventive groups in electronica, Lamb continued pushing the boundaries of singer/songwriter Drum’n’Bass three albums in. Andy Barlow’s productions again set a gold standard for ambitious, evocative, intelligent accompaniment of Louise Rhodes’ vocals. If there were any doubters about Lamb being the brightest, most talented singer/ producer combo in electronica, What Sound is all the argument needed to the contrary.

The Music On Vinyl 2 LP reissue of What Sound includes the winning track of a worldwide remix contest for the song “Heaven”, by Czech producer Ower.

Double LP with Insert on blue transparent vinyl. Limited edition with only 1500 copies.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS - ABATTOIR BLUES / THE LYRE OF ORPHEUS

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus is the thirteenth studio album by the Australian alternative rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, released on 20 September 2004 on Mute Records. It is a double album with a total of seventeen songs—nine on Abattoir Blues and eight on The Lyre of Orpheus.

The album was produced by Nick Launay at Studio Ferber in Paris in March–April 2004 and Nick Cave used The Bad Seeds line up of Mick Harvey, Thomas Wydler, Martyn Casey, Conway Savage, Jim Sclavunos, Warren Ellis, and James Johnston. It was the first album by the group for which Blixa Bargeld did not perform – English guitarist and organist Johnston, of the group Gallon Drunk, replaced Bargeld. Cave decided to split drumming duties for the two parts, with Sclavunos on Abattoir Blues and Wydler on The Lyre of Orpheus. According to Launay, the whole album was completed in twelve days.

The album's release was supported by the Abattoir Blues Tour, which travelled through Europe from 2 November to 5 December. In January 2007 a double live album and DVD was issued as The Abattoir Blues Tour. Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus 's last track, "O Children", was featured in the 2010 film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, and the song is referenced as an achievement in Lego Harry Potter: Years 5–7. In March 2005, to complement the success of the double album, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds released B-Sides & Rarities, a three-disc, 56-track collection of B-sides, rarities, and tracks that had appeared on film soundtracks.

Portastatic The Summer of the Shark Vinyl Reissue

Tomorrow, Portastatic’s The Summer of the Shark will be available for the first time on vinyl as part of a monthly series of reissues to mark the 25th anniversary of Merge Records.

Mac McCaughan, co-founder of Merge Records and frontman of the band Superchunk, began recording solo albums under the name Portastatic in the early ’90’s. Beginning with this album, Portastatic evolved from a lo-fi side project to become McCaughan’s main focus throughout Superchunk’s long hiatus in the early ’00s.

McCaughan wrote the songs on The Summer of the Shark in 2001 while Superchunk was on tour in support of Here’s to Shutting Up, which was released mere days after the September 11 attacks and would be the band’s last studio album for nine years. The resulting batch of songs was the last Portastatic album recorded almost entirely at home; it was also the most emotionally resonant and musically compact collection to date.

Upon the album’s release, then Chicago Tribune reporter John Cook wrote of the album: “It is the most effective and moving musical answer yet to what has happened to us over the last two years. Faced with an enormous catastrophe, McCaughan elected to make a small record. There are no heroes rushing up stairwells and no dissections of good and evil—only scared, confused people and local heartbreaks.”

Recorded at McCaughan’s home studio in Chapel Hill, The Summer of the Shark includes contributions from Janet Weiss (Wild Flag, Quasi, Sleater-Kinney), Tony Crow (Lambchop), Margaret White (Versus, Matt Pond PA), Matthew McCaughan (Bon Iver, Hiss Golden Messenger), Aaron Oliva, and John Plymale.

LP is pressed on white vinyl, and includes a coupon for a full download.

MAJOR LEAGUE - THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH ME

Following an incredibly busy year of shows in support of their debut record Hard Feelings, Major League has returned with a sophomore album that defies any pre-conceived notions and defines their next evolution as a band. With guitarist Brian Joyce now helming vocal duties, backed by Matt Chila (guitar/vocals), Kyle Bell (bass) and Luke Smartnick (drums), the band emerges with a new sense of identity, a renewed focus and an abundant amount of energy for their most personal recording to date.

For their latest effort, Major League worked with esteemed producer Will Yip (Title Fight, The Wonder Years, Balance and Composure) at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA who helped steer them in a new direction and further explore their internal boundaries as a band.

“There's Nothing Wrong With Me as a whole dives into the deepest depths of my person and lays it all out,” explains Joyce. “While recording with Will there were many times where I was self conscious about certain subject matter on the record, things I wasn't sure I was ready to talk about. It was very emotional experience and at times nerve wracking to talk about. But ultimately it's what made the record who it is and gave it the identity we feel we've lacked in the past.”

Blood, sweat and tears in the studio paid off as the band came away with eleven brilliantly written tracks that run a gamut of emotions with thoughtful versus and intoxicating choruses. Song’s like “Pillow Talk,” are brought to life with massive riffs and driving rhythm that reveal a vulnerability and sincerity not heard since Jimmy Eat World got Clarity.
