The Angel Baby Song - 1960 Hit by Rosie & The Originals

It is my sincere wish that long time readers of the CVR blog will appreciate this story, it is not my writing but that of a friend in music and vinyl records. Danny Sandrik owns and operates All-About-VinylRecords.com, a site dedicated to vinyl records, the music he loves and the players who play it. Now, Danny is not a 'professional' writer, and he may have a dangling participle here or there (though, honestly, i wouldn't know it if he did), but his words are from the pure passion of enjoying the music and living in the time when it was popular. From time to time, Danny's articles will be featured here on the CVR blog and i hope that you enjoy Danny's words - as much as enjoyed writing them. Please, feel free to comment on the stories and please stop by his site All-About-VinylRecords.com, where you can discover the best fifties, sixties and seventies vinyl record album information, plus cool videos and artist biographies.

A sincere thank you do Danny for allowing me to reprint his words, enjoy!

The Angel Baby Song - 1960 Hit by Rosie & The Originals

written by Danny Sandrik

This Angel Baby song was written by 14 year old Rosie Hamlin and became a Top Five Doo-Wop hit back in 1960 after the song was originally played in a local Dept Store.

Rosie had scribbled the Angel Baby Song on the back of her notebook as a sophomore at Mission Bay High School in San Diego.

It started out as a poem for the very first boyfriend she ever had and was written right before she joined the Originals.

Rosie's mother bought her a piano and her Aunt began teaching her some chords. As she continued to learn on the piano and sing a family friend would bring over local musicians for jam sessions.

Rosie had already written Angel Baby when she was fourteen and after many sessions together the group decided to record the song when Rosie was just fifteen.

The Recording Studio Surprise Rosie didn't expect!

It was a hot summer day when the group got into a car and headed out to San Marcos, California, to a rented recording studio described as somewhere in the middle of no-where.

The original group consisted of David Ponci and Noah Tafolla on Guitar and Tony Gomez on Bass. Carl Von Goodat later joined on Drums and Alfred Barrett on Sax.

When they arrived what appeared to be an old barn was actually an abandoned airplane hangar owned by a retired airplane mechanic.

The recording studio was a corner of the hangar surrounded by airplane parts, but it did have a set of drums and a piano in that corner.

To make matters worse the sax player, Alfred Barrett, said he would join them later but failed to show because he had to mow the lawn.

Remember, they were just teens at the time, so some had chores to do before going anywhere. They were in trouble without a sax player but Noah had an idea.

He had played a little Sax and decided to teach Tony Gomez the Sax part so the Bass player is actually playing the Sax on the original recording. Now back to the Recording Studio.

The Surprise Flip-side Recording.

The recording equipment consisted of an old two-track machine. The group recorded the Angle Baby song over and over, a reported thirty times or more before they got the take they wanted and thought they were done.

The "Airplane Hangar Recording engineer" then asks "What do you want on the other side?" As they were new in the business they completely forgot about the flip side of the record, but luck was with them.

Their old friend Blueford Wade, a vocalist that sat in on gigs with Rosie when he wasn't with his own band, was along for the ride. Noah again had a suggestion. He asked Blueford to just ad-lib something and that's how "Give Me Love" made it on the B-side of that 45rpm record.

The Angel Baby Song is a Department Store Hit!

When the record was finished the group ran into trouble landing a record deal and couldn't get an appointment with any of the recording labels, but they didn't give up.

They took their master recording to Kresge's Department Store in San Diego and asked the Manager to play the song in one of the listening booths of the music department. They wanted it piped into the store so the teens shopping for records could hear it also.

They suggested to the Manager that if the teens liked the song maybe they could sell it in the store. The Manager agreed and allowed them to play the song throughout the store.

The kids loved the song and wanted to know where to buy the record. There was a distributor for Highland Records in the store that day and he came over to see what all the commotion was about.

He offered the group a recording contract on the spot, but only under the condition that the company take possession of the master recording. He also said that David Ponci had to be named as the author of the song as he was the eldest of the group.

The group was young and eager for success so they gave them their master with no contract signed.

Good times turn bad for Rosie & the Originals.

It was about three weeks later the Angel Baby song was played on the radio by DJ Allen Freed before the group had received their contract.

He made mention that the song was by a young girl named Rosie and told everyone listening that this was going to be a hit song.

He continued playing the song six to ten times a day before Rosie finally contacted someone at Highland to meet them with a contract.

She had to take her mother to sign because Rosie was a minor. Hamlin later discovered she was ineligible to collect record royalties from the song because she was not listed as the song writer.

This eventually led to the group's break-up. Hamlin finally secured the copyright to her music in 1961 but battles over royalities lasted for decades.

They were musicians not business people. They got burned like so many others in those days as there was no one available immediately to help many young artists with legal advice.

I have read articles indicating that immediately after writing the song, Rosie certified-mailed herself a copy so that it would be legally dated.

If this really happened it was a wise move in view of the legal mess later created by Highland Records, costing Rosie many years in lost royalties.

Remember the Darling Lorraine song I wrote about. Same thing happened to the writer of that song. You can read that story here.

Rosie & the Originals - In Good Company.

After her days with Highland Records, Jackie Wilson asked Rosie to come to New York, along with guitarist Noah Tafolla, where they recorded "Lonely Blue Nights" for the Brunswick label.

Soon after they began opening for Jackie Wilson at the Brooklyn Paramount Theater for six shows daily. The show included Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Marcells, Benny King, The Isley Brothers, Del Shannon, Bobby Vee and Bobby Rydel among others.

Rosie has worked with other great entertainers including Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. She opened for the "Rolling Stones" when they first came to the US.

John Lennon recorded the Angel Baby Song and made mention that little Rosie was one of his favorite American Artists.

This Angel Baby song made it to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1960. It remained on the charts for twelve weeks.

For someone that had just a single hit song "Angel Baby", Rosie Hamlin has proved that she should be remembered for more than that one hit single.

Her cover versions of "A Thousand Stars", The One That Really Loves You and Your No Good are superb covers, and her original 'Lonely Blue Nights' deserved to be a hit song.

Hamlin and Tafolla married and had two children together.

In 2002, Hamlin performed this "Angel Baby" video on a PBS-TV program, Red White & Rock.

Please note that here she is performing this classic with a full orchestra of professional musicians. In 1960 she recorded this in a converted airplane hanger with her teenage friends.

Forty two years later, no flat notes, perfect pitch all the way through the song. A tribute to her lasting talent.

FANTASTIC 140 GRAM CLEAR QUADROUPLE VINYL REISSUE OF THIS LEGENDARY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN LIVE PERFORMANCE AVAILABLE IN A DELUXE HARDBACK SLIPCASE

The words 'legendary', 'seminal' and 'classic' are very often over-used in the heated hyperbole that surround rock concerts in general and Bruce Springsteen gigs in particular. They lead to overblown phrases such as "essential for every fan" and one of his greatest ever shows. This recording of a concert Bruce and the E-Street Band played in Philadelphia in February 1975 really is that of a legendary Springsteen show, a seminal moment in his career, a classic performance and an essential part of any fan's library of The Boss work. This is one of his greatest ever performances.

Blind Boys Of Alabama - I'll Find A Way

I'll Find a Way represents a strong new chapter for the Blind Boys of Alabama, whose career stretches back more than seventy years. Formed in the late 1930s at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in Talladega, the group has harmonized throughout the turbulent twentieth century and well into the twenty-first. They have enjoyed some of their biggest successes in the last ten years, during which they've won five Grammys, four Gospel Music Awards and multiple invitations to sing at the White House.

Produced by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, Kathleen Edwards), I'll Find A Way is a unique collaboration between one of popular music's longest-running acts and one of its fastest-rising stars. Known primarily for his work in the indie and folk realms, the Bon Iver frontman proved a perfect fit to work with the Blind Boys, exhibiting a deep knowledge and appreciation of gospel music.

I'll Find a Way features some of the Blind Boys' most fervent vocals as well as contributions by a new generation of Blind Boys fans - Sam Amidon, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Casey Dienel of White Hinterland, Patty Griffin, and Justin Vernon himself. The result is a rousing collection of gospel songs, new and old, that address life's most desperate hours but also savor the triumphs and reassurances of faith.

Los Lobos - How Will The Wolf Survive

Produced by T-Bone Burnett, the major breakthrough of Los Lobos' How Will The Wolf Survive? was a launching pad for the tried & true sound of these Latin American musical heroes.

Honing their craft in '70s L.A. by doing loads of weddings and dance gigs, they incorporated Rock into their Mexican sound which resulted in a Pop staple of legendary proportions. The band switch easily between Rockers like "Don't Worry Baby" and "A Matter Of Time" and modern Mexican evergreens "Corrida #1" and "Serenata Norteña."

Marsheaux - Inhale (Limited) 2LP (Translucent Blue)

Artoffact Records re-issues Inhale on double-vinyl with all-new cover art and three previously unreleased bonus tracks. The vinyl comes in two editions, audiophile black and a limited (100 copies worldwide) translucent blue for collectors.

"I do have a soft spot for Marsheaux," Andy McCluskey of OMD has been quoted as saying, and no doubt the Greek synthpop duo have garnered many accolades in their 10 year career. Marianthi Melitsi and Sophie Sarigiannidou have indeed taken Europe's synthpop scene by storm over four albums and high-profile remixes. The Human League played their track "What a Lovely Surprise" in the pre-show music for the Steel City tour; the duo were commissioned to do an official remix for OMD; and Tom Robinson and Stuart Maconie (BBC Radio 6 hosts) have praised their work.

2013 saw the release of Inhale, Marsheaux's most accomplished and successful record to date, and the duo's fourth full-length. With top marks from the likes of Vancouver's V-Rag Magazine and Collapse Board's Everett True, Inhale is a glorious synthpop record, one of 2013's best.

We expect this product in stock on December 3rd.

from our friends at ThrillJockey

Mountains - Mountains Mountains Mountains

Mountains Mountains Mountains was originally released in 2008 on the Catsup Plate label in a tiny edition of 500 copies that quickly sold out. Thrill Jockey is happy to re-issue the album in a limited edition of 1,000 copies with different artwork (an inverted color scheme from the original) pressed on high quality virgin vinyl with a download coupon for the first time.

Reflecting on Mountains Mountains Mountains’, Koen Holtkamp states:  “One thing that strikes me on listening back 5 or so years later is both how different and similar it sounds to what we are currently doing. While these pieces are clearly more minimal and intimate on some level and our technical approach has changed somewhat, the dynamics between the acoustic and electronic elements remain fairly consistent throughout our releases. Which is something we’ve been engaged with from the beginning and part of what defines us as a band.”

Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock (Dual Speed Vinyl)

In the fall of 1957 "Jailhouse Rock" was first released in the US as a single backed with "Treat Me Nice" and was #1 for seven weeks. Early in 1958 it entered the British charts at number one, making it the first single ever to do so and remained there for three weeks. "Jailhouse Rock" also spent some time at the top of the Country and the R&B charts.  Jailhouse Rock was not  released as an LP although it contains some of Elvis's best songs.

Five of the six songs from the movie were released as part of an extended-play, seven-inch 45 RPM record that soon topped the Billboard EP charts, eventually selling an additional two million copies and earning another double-platinum RIAA certification.

The Jailhouse Rock tunes are unassailable - the writing and production team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller played prominent roles in the making of the soundtrack. The pair took over the recording sessions, serving as unofficial producers of "Jailhouse Rock," "Treat Me Nice," "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care," and other tunes. Their collaboration with Elvis and his musicians on "Jailhouse Rock" resulted in the singer's hardest-rocking movie song. As D.J. Fontana once noted about his drum playing on the record, "I tried to think of someone on a chain gang smashing rocks."

The performance in the film of the title song by the young and sensual, "dangerous" Elvis complete with chorus boys dressed as convicts is legendary.

One of the best of Presley's films, Jailhouse Rock is a perfect balance of song and story - seldom would Elvis be so well showcased in the future.

Elvis Presley's songs have become an integral part of American culture. All were interpreted and recorded by one of the most successful performers American popular music has ever seen. The Jailhouse Rock EP soundtrack is a classic example of the "early" Elvis on the rise to super-stardom. Elvis at his best.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 23, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Have you ever seen "Dear Mr. Play Boy," by Hot Breath Hannah? It's on the Atlanta label NRC, known for recordings by Joe South, Jerry Reed, Ray Stevens, and of course their biggest hit, "Robbin' the Cradle," by Tony Bellus.

Don't know where this odd one came from, but I certainly never heard it on the radio.

She sings one mysterious line about a man "wearing dads." Any idea what that means?
—Andre Pierce, Mill Valley, Calif.

DEAR ANDRE: You would not have found Hot Breath Hannah's record on any station's playlist, when it came out in the spring of 1964.

"Please Mr. Play Boy" and "Looking for a Man" (NRC 45-378) is a custom recording made specifically to promote men's products sold by H.R. Kaminsky & Sons, Inc. (New York and Atlanta), and not intended for radio.

In "Please Mr. Play Boy," Hot Breath Hannah, accompanied by the piano pounding boogie-woogie beat of the Paul Mitchell Trio, is reacting to an ad running in Playboy magazine.

Actually, this display ad appeared nationwide in many magazines and newspapers, but Hot Breath singled out Playboy, and Hugh Heffner (Mr. Play Boy), to hear her plea:

"Dear Mr. Play Boy, send me a guy like the one I see in your ad. Dear Mr. Play Boy, send me a he like the brute you show wearing Tads"

Now you know the mysterious word is Tads, described in these ads as "lavishly tailored trousers." The dapper young man in the drawing is surrounded by six swooning, bikini-clad babes, and a promise that "nice things happen to guys who wear Tads … priced at $7.95 to $18.95."

The record came packaged in a custom sleeve, boldly stating it is a "Free 45 RPM." It was available at Kaminsky's clothing stores as well as by mail.

Because NRC (National Recording Corporation) manufactured the discs without knowing exactly how they would be used, the labels bear no connection whatsoever to Kaminsky's, Tads, or any other products. The label is no different than what one might expect with any other record.

It is the picture sleeve, which perplexingly shows the title as "Pleese Mr. Playboy," where all the product information is found.

After 49 years, the Tads have seen better days, but we do know that nice things happen to guys, and gals too, who still have this souvenir giveaway. Based on the quality of the recordings and the very limited distribution, recent sales of the record with sleeve have been in the $150 to $175 range.

So much for "Mr. Play Boy," but there is still one more "Playboy" on today's schedule:

DEAR JERRY: While watching a Golden Girls rerun, my aunt asked if I knew what a fine singer Betty White was. I told her I had no idea Betty was ever a singer.

I went on eBay and found only one record by Betty White, "Playboy." Is this the actress, or another woman with the same name?

Was that a phase of her career that I missed? Did she make many records?
—Julia Turlock, Salt Lake City

DEAR JULIA: The "Playboy" 45 you spotted is known as a ghost record, one of thousands made in the 1950s and '60s. It is simply when someone records an established hit, trying to make their version sound as close to the original as possible.

Ghost records were usually rushed out to stores so they could be on sale at the same time as the popular versions, but at perhaps one-third the price.

Betty White's waxing of "Playboy," the Top 10 hit in 1962 for the Marvelettes, is surprisingly good for a ghost record, as is the flip, "That's Old Fashioned," by the Shaw Brothers (Caravelle 2002). Their side is of course the Everly Brothers' tune, also a Top 10 hit at the time.

However, Caravelle's Betty White is not the venerable actress, nor is she Betty White the "Prominent Authority on Ballroom and Popular Dancing," who made her first series of dance instruction albums in 1960. There is also a Betty J. White, a soul singer with a couple of Erie (not eerie) records in 1979.

Your aunt must have heard Betty sing on one or more of her TV appearances, either as someone's guest or on her own "Betty White Show." Though she sang countless times, and brilliantly I might add, I have never seen a phonograph record by Betty. The next one that turns up will be the first.

Fortunately, many of those shows, some as early as 1954, are accessible online, especially on YouTube. Now you can quickly acquaint yourself with that phase of Betty's career.

IZ ZAT SO? Betty White's trophy case must be bursting at the seams. For her 62 years on television, she has 25 prestigious awards, including seven Emmys. None of this comes as a surprise.

What is a shocker is that this superb singer, who apparently never made a record, is also a GRAMMY Award winner.

Not for singing, but for talking.

Not for a record, but a compact disc edition of her book, "If You Ask Me (And of Course You Won't) Read By the Author" (Penguin Audio Book). For this, Betty was the winner in the 2011 Spoken Word category.

Now 91, and still going strong, here's a heartfelt 'thank you' to Betty for all the smiles she's given us.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

BRYAN FERRY - DON'T STOP THE DANCE - PSYCHEMAGICK / GREG WILSON / SPACE COAST REMIXES (SUPER DELUXE LIMITED EDITION)

FROM THE VINYL FACTORY

Availability: Available to pre-order

Following Todd Terje's incredible 2012 remix of Roxy Music's 'Love Is  The Drug', Bryan Ferry has recruited some of the best producers in the  world to remix his 1985 hit ‘Don’t Stop The Dance’.

Now released  by The Vinyl Factory as a series of three super-deluxe limited   editions of only 1000 copies each - with bespoke screen printed thick  card sleeves housing 180-gram records mastered for vinyl by Noel  Summerville at 3345 Mastering and  crafted on the EMI 1400 in Hayes,  Middlesex.

The track was originally the third single from the  number one album Boys & Girls, and featured long-serving guest  musicians Nile Rodgers, Marcus Miller, Omar Hakim, Andy Newmark and  David Sanborn.

"The recording was done in various studios in  London, New York and Nassau, and the whole process took about two  years," recalls Bryan Ferry. "I  wrote 'Don't Stop The Dance' together  with my co-producer and engineer  Rhett Davies, and I remember the track  originating in some sessions we  did at my home studio in England. We  finally mixed the record with Bob  Clearmountain at The Power Station  studios in New York."

Isaac Ferry hand-picked the producers to Re/Make - Re/Model 'Don't Stop The Dance' in various guises, re-enlisting previous collaborators Todd Terje, Eric Duncan and Greg Wilson, alongside Idjut Boys, Sleazy Mcqueen, Space Coast, Punks Jump Up, and two versions from both Psychemagick and Grasshopper aka in-house keyboard programmer Liam Duggan.

"After  the successful release of 'Olympia Remixes', we decided that my song  'Don't Stop The Dance' should really be revisited by a new generation of  DJs," says Bryan Ferry.

"Since my first solo album in 1973 I've  always tried to reinterpret other people's songs in my own way. So it  has been good to hear 'Don't Stop Dance' in so many different  incarnations. It's fascinating to see how some of the remixes focus on  certain aspects of the song, and some on another...they all take the  track to a variety of interesting places."

3D and the art of Massive Attack

Limited Edition Vinyl Box Set - The Vinyl Factory

"When I was about ten years old, a kid called 3D was painting the streets hard. 3D quit painting and formed the band Massive Attack, which may have been a good thing for him but was a big loss for the city." Banksy (Swindle magazine, 2008)

The Vinyl Factory presents 3D and the art of Massive Attack by Robert del Naja aka 3D - the first book on the visual history of a band who have sold over 11 milliion records worldwide, compiled and designed by 3D using images from a personal archive and original artifacts scanned by the artist for the record.

Robert’s artwork has come to define the iconic style of his band and the book explores their visual history, presenting both familiar and previously unseen work, from his influential graffiti and stencil art in the Wild Bunch-era of the ‘80s to Massive Attack cover designs and paste-ups and paintings. Also included is work made in collaboration with Nick Knight, Tom Hingston, Judy Blame and Michael Nash Associates, as well as unseen photographs documenting Del Naja’s ongoing collaboration with United Visual Artists. And his recent work with filmmaker Adam Curtis.

The 400-page book also features an in-depth interview with the artist, where he describes the development of the band’s artwork and record sleeve designs, as well as offering insight into his processes, and inspirations.

Del Naja’s background as a graffiti artist has shaped his evolving aesthetic, as well as a strong ethos of ‘do it yourself’ creativity. His instincts as an artist were forged in an atmosphere of spontaneity and innovation - from making flyers to throwing warehouse parties - and this way of working informed the first record sleeves he created as 3D.

Inspired by magazine culture and comics, 3D drew on wide-ranging influences, from New York’s hip-hop scene and Japanese graphics, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s cultural juxtapositions to Warhol’s pop imagery, politics and punk.

“I was always told that any artist that wanted to be taken seriously should never paint record sleeves” Robert del Naja

The Vinyl Factory will publish 3D and the art of Massive Attack on 28 October 2013; the hardback book will be priced at £50.

The limited edition will be for sale exclusively from The Vinyl Factory online web shop
