PledgeMusic and Cleopatra Records Join Forces to Re-issue Van Morrison's The Complete 1967 Bang Sessions

The Double LP Limited Pressing in a Velvet Cover on Red Splatter Vinyl includes the colossal hit “Brown Eyed Girl”

PledgeMusic, the leading direct-to-fan company and Cleopatra Records, an independent L.A. based record label with an eclectic roster of artists, have announced a pre-order for the re-issue of the legendary album of Van Morrison, The Complete Bang Sessions. Cleopatra Records is pressing a strictly limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies of this 180 gram Red & Black Spatter vinyl in a luxurious black velvet gatefold cover, an exclusive for fans only available through PledgeMusic’s platform.

But in 1967 Van Morrison was finished with the record industry, after disbanding Them and exiling himself away in Belfast. Producer Bert Berns managed to convince Van Morrison to return to the states and record for Bang. It was these early sessions which would mark the beginning of an incredibly successful career, beginning with the colossal hit “Brown Eyed Girl”. Every fan who pledges support will receive the highly collectible vinyl for The Complete Bang Sessions. Pledge at pledgemusic.com

Jayce Varden, President, North America at PledgeMusic, commented: “Van Morrison is one of the most talented artists of our time and PledgeMusic is thrilled to partner with Cleopatra Records to give his fans the rare chance to get their hands on this exclusive deluxe packaged item.”

Matt Green, Vice President of Acquisitions at Cleopatra Records added, “Cleopatra Records is proud to present Van Morrison’s smashing solo debut in a beautiful package & pressing, which a work of this caliber deserves.”

Happy Birthday To The 45rpm Record

written by Robert Benson

Happy Birthday to an old friend, the 45 rpm record officially turns 65 years old today!

The 45rpm record was initially introduced in 1949 by RCA Records as a smaller, more durable replacement for the heavy 78 shellac-based records of the time. The 45 was created by RCA as a competitive move against one their rival record companies, Columbia, which had just introduced the new microgroove 33 1/3 rpm LP. The number 45 came from taking 78 and subtracting Columbia's new 33 to equal the 45. Record companies and consumers alike faced an uncertain future as to which format would survive the 78rpm or the 45rpm; in what was known as the “War of the Speeds.” In 1949 Capitol and Decca started issuing the new LP format and RCA relented and issued its first LP in January 1950. But the 45 rpm was gaining in popularity and Columbia issued its first 45s in February 1951. Soon other record companies saw the mass consumer appeal the new format allowed and by 1954 more than 200 million 45s had been sold.

So On March 31, 1949, RCA Victor released "Texarkana Baby" b/w "Bouquet of Roses" by Eddy Arnold. The first 45 to hit the Billboard charts was "A -- You're Adorable" by Perry Como, listed on the charts on May 7, 1949. The disc was made of green vinyl, part of an early plan to color-code singles according to the genre of music they featured. Others included yellow for children's songs and red for classical music. The next week, the year's biggest hit appeared on the Billboard charts -- "Riders In The Sky (A Cowboy Legend)” by Vaughn Monroe. The first 45rpm records were monaural and as stereo sound became more prevalent and popular in the 1960s, almost all 45rpm records were manufactured in stereo.

The historical and commercial significance of the 45rpm record has varied over time, the technological developments in recorded music and according to the audience of the particular artists and musical genres. In general, 45 records were more important to the music acts who sold music to the younger audiences (mostly teenagers) who tend to have limited financial resources and shorter attention spans. That said, the golden age for the 45 was in the 1950s and 1960s in early development of rock music. They were affordable and allowed artists the freedom of releasing a single song as opposed to a whole LP. Conversely, some singles helped to launch the sales of the albums that the musicians were promoting.

The length of the songs also evolved. In the 1950s, it was common for songs to be anywhere from two to two and a half minutes long and in the 1960s; the three minute single became the norm. This length was very convenient and fit the AM radio format very well. Millions of demo records were sent out to radio stations with specific instructions as to which song was supposed to be the ‘hit single,’ although there were some DJs that played the ‘B’ sides and those songs became hits. Elvis Presley was one of the first artists to release the ‘double-sided single’, meaning that both songs would ultimately end up on the charts. The Beatles followed suit and were also one of the first recording artists to push the envelope, so to speak and commonly had songs over the three-minute norm. In fact, there are some singles that had to be edited by radio stations and shortened to fit their particular formats. Don McLean’s 1972 hit “American Pie” is an example, the single was split up into two parts on the 45. The Beatles broke new ground in 1968 with their over seven minute epic “Hey Jude.”

The sales of the 45s were recorded on the record charts in most countries in a Top 40 format and these charts were often published in magazines (Billboard), television shows (American Bandstand) and radio programs often had the Top 40 countdown shows (Casey Casem). However, the 45 rpm record can never duplicate the sales figures from when the format was in its heyday because when the 45 was at its peak, it was the way to get music to the music consumer. Today there are too many other formats competing for the music dollar.

Nowadays, they still manufacture 45 rpm records, but on a much smaller scale than decades ago. Indie bands, r&b artists and punk bands love the format; it makes the music affordable for their target audience and, after all these years, 45 rpm records are still highly sought after by record collectors. Happy Birthday to an old friend, here’s for many more!

DEPECHE MODE - A BROKEN FRAME

Their second album A Broken Frame was released in 1982 and shows a growing band in its early stages, a group that's searching for direction and focus. Its versatility and highly diverse set of quintessential Eighties Pop make this a very interesting album, and every Depeche Mode fan that's eager to get an understanding of the makings of the group should own this record.

Key member Alan Wilder was already touring with the band at this time, but has not yet been involved with recording A Broken Frame. Their next effort however, Construction Time Again would feature Wilder in the arranging seat, thus shaping the unique sound of Depeche Mode forever.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve

DEPECHE MODE - CONSTRUCTION TIME AGAIN

The third album of Depeche Mode Construction Time Again (1983) was the first one to include talented band member and arranger Alan Wilder to the mix. The album was recorded in John Foxx's The Garden studio in London and mixed in the famous Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, the latter being famous for its delivery of classic albums by artists like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave and U2.

Experimenting with brand new instruments like the Synclavier that allowed sampling to be manipulated musically, Construction Time Again was a groundbreaking record that included industrial influences.

These influences would come to full fruition on subsequent albums Some Great Reward and Black Celebration. Songs like "Pipeline", "Love In Itself", "Shame" and "Everything Counts" turned out to become classic Depeche material.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • Insert

DEPECHE MODE - VIOLATOR

The first Depeche album to sell over a million copies in the United States, Violator (1990) is often regarded as Depeche Mode's finest work. Not only containing the world hits "Personal Jesus" (later beautifully reinterpreted by Johnny Cash) and "Enjoy The Silence" (with its epic video), each and every song on Violator is worthy of mentioning: for instance the beautiful and haunting album closer "Clean", and two further hit singles "Policy Of Truth" and "World In My Eyes", all fine examples of Gahan, Wilder and Gore's combined magic.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • Insert

DEPECHE MODE - ULTRA

Released in 1997, Ultra proved that Depeche Mode were not ready to quit yet, with the departure of key member Alan Wilder fresh in people's memory. By delivering a strong set of new songs, Martin Gore, David Gahan and Alan Fletcher proved that they were still relentlessly on top of their game.

The album reached #5 on the Billboard 200, carried by strong singles like the album opener "Barrel Of A Gun", "It's No Good" and "Home". Having recovered from an almost fatal overdose, singer David Gahan took to his vocal duties like there's no tomorrow. In its darkest times, it almost looked as if the band would never be the same again or might have called its quits. Depeche Mode are built to last and Ultra is the ultimate evidence.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • Insert

Ask Mr.Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 24, 2014

DEAR JERRY: I distinctly recall one of the dee jays on KRLA (1110-AM) playing "Exodus," by Ferrante and Teicher, then saying it was No. 1 that week, and, for the first time ever, both of the Top 2 were instrumentals.

Whether he meant nationwide or just Los Angeles, I can't say. Can you? Either way, was he right?
And what instrumental would have been No. 2 that week?
- Helen Polk, Redondo Beach, Calif.

DEAR HELEN: Depending on when that slice of music trivia was mentioned, he could have meant either Los Angeles or nationally, or both, and still been correct.

For the final week of 1960, "Exodus" was No. 1 in "the Land of Eleven-Ten," with No. 2 being "Wonderland By Night," by either Louis Prima or Bert Kaempfert.

KRLA began 1961 with "Exodus" still at No. 1, but with "Wonderland By Night" replaced at No. 2 by Lawrence Welk's "Calcutta" ... another instrumental!

Over the next few weeks, these two would swap positions.

It's amazing that this freaky instrumental incident happened two times consecutively in January 1961, yet, for the rest of the vinyl era would never be repeated.

Neither in Los Angeles nor nationally.

Even going back to the birth of the 45 rpm (1949) we find only one time when two different instrumentals held the top two chart spots nationally.

Beginning March 17, 1956, "Lisbon Antigua" (Nelson Riddle and His Orchestra) and "The Poor People of Paris" (Les Baxter and His Orchestra) occupied the top two positions on both Billboard and Cash Box. At times they even swapped positions.

The next, and last, nationwide occurrence of twin instrumentals topping the charts came in 1961, with the aforementioned "Wonderland By Night" and "Exodus."

DEAR JERRY: Can you stand another pre- and post-Brit Invasion comparison request?

I'd like to know what effect the Beatles and company had on instrumentalists of the 1960s?

I'll bet a lot fewer of them topped the charts once all of those vocal groups seized control of the American music scene.
—Cal Ballentine, Grand Rapids, Mich.

DEAR CAL: Even with all the 50th Anniversary inquiries coming my way, there are still a few thought-provoking angles to the British Invasion.

Yours is one of them.

Here are the No. 1 instrumentals of the '60s as per Billboard and/or Cash Box, both before and after Jan. 1964.

Before Invasion (1960 - 1963)

1960 "Theme from A Summer Place" (Percy Faith and His Orchestra)
1961 "Wonderland By Night" (Bert Kaempfert and His Orchestra)
1961 "Exodus (Ferrante and Teicher)
1961 "Calcutta" (Lawrence Welk and His Orchestra, Featuring Frank Scott on Harpsichord)
1962 "Stranger on the Shore" (Mr. Acker Bilk)
1962 "The Stripper" (David Rose and His Orchestra)
1962 "Telstar" (Tornadoes)

After Invasion (1964 - 1969)

1965 "Taste of Honey" (Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass)
1968 "Love Is Blue (L'Amour Est Bleu)" (Paul Mauriat and His Orchestra)
1969 "Grazing in the Grass" (Hugh Masekela)
1969 "Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet" (Henry Mancini, His Orchestra and Chorus)

These numbers support your assumption. More singing groups on the charts left fewer spots for instrumentalists.

For the first four years of the decade, seven instrumentals made it to No. 1, but in the next six years only four were so lucky.

IZ ZAT SO? In a recent question, a reader opined that, in the pre-Invasion years, teens mostly bought singles whereas adults were the primary market for LPs. Of course that changed dramatically in the mid-'60s.

Let's compare the number of albums intended for R&R lovin' teenagers, from the first Billboard Top LP chart (Jan. 4, 1960) to their last one of the decade ( Dec. 27, 1969).

Unfortunately for latter day scholars, in the early '60s, Billboard split their album listings into four separate charts, two for monaural and two for stereo, then split each of those into two more groups based on length of time on the charts. Arrgh!

Fortunately, they eased their way out of that convoluted mess over the next few years.

But for our purpose today, we have to at least split the mono and stereo listings.

Of the Top 65 monaural LPs in 1960, only six are by rock stars: Elvis Presley; Ricky Nelson; Bobby Darin; Frankie Avalon; Duane Eddy; and Fabian.

The stereo chart lists only 50 titles, most of which are also on the monaural charts. However, there isn't even one stereo entry of the R&R variety.

We know the 1960s was a decade of many changes, and the LP market is no exception.

As we close the book on the eventful '60s, it becomes quicker to count the titles among the Top 100 that were targeted to adults — of which there are only 20.

Making up that 20 percent are LPs aimed at buyers of Adult Oriented Pop Artists (Andy Williams, Peggy Lee, Lettermen, etc.); Original Casts and Soundtracks ("Paint Your Wagon," "Funny Girl," "Hello Dolly," etc.); and Country music (Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, Charley Pride, etc.).

As for the other 80 percent, they owe a great deal of their success to young thinking Americans of all ages.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SoundStageDirect

ReDISCovered Box Set (Pre-Order) (On Sale) by Rush

In March of 1974, Rush released their self-titled debut through the band’s own indie label, Moon Records in Canada, and quickly sold out of the initial 3500 copies originally pressed. Moon Records would soon become Anthem Records, which launched in 1977, and continues to serve as the band’s only Canadian record company.

To mark the band’s 40-year recording career, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) will celebrate with the vinyl reissue of the original Moon Records (pre-Mercury) release of Rush, as part of Universal’s reDISCovered vinyl series. Housed in a sturdy, custom box with a lift-off top, this landmark album is pressed on 200g, audiophile grade vinyl, from the original 1974 analog stereo masters, cut to copper plates using the Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) process at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Rush also features the original Moon Records jacket art, complete with the original MN-100-A/B Matrix etching, and will include a 16”x22” reproduction of the first Rush promo poster, three 5”x7” lithographs of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and John Rutsey, and a 12”x12” Rush Family Tree poster.

Featuring the band’s original line up, Lee, Lifeson and Rutsey, Rush’s eponymous 1974 debut features eight hard- hitting rockers including “Finding My Way,” the fast-paced “Need Some Love,” “Take A Friend,” “What You’re Doing,” the southern rock vibe of “In The Mood,” and their U.S. breakthrough anthem “Working Man” which was made famous by Cleveland, Ohio’s WMMS radio station. Other tracks include the more melodic “Here Again” and the atmospheric “Before and After,” which gradually builds into a burst of power chords and heavy guitar riffs.

Rush’s unique style and sound continues to evolve and push the envelope of rock into new territories, gaining legions of new fans along the way. After a four decade journey, in 2013 Rush was recognized for their immeasurable impact and influence in rock and roll and were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame to the delight of fans and critics alike.

Chinatown (Pre-Order) by Thin Lizzy

Released in 1980 as a successful follow-up to their much loved Black Rose - A Rock Legend (Friday Music 3338), Phil Lynott, Scott Gorham, Brian Downey and new guitar sensation Snowy White forged ahead once again with their trademark hard rock sound and continued their assault on audiences worldwide with their tenth masterpiece Chinatown.

As the powerful opener We Will Be Strong kicks the album into full gear, featuring the dual lead guitars of Scott Gorham and Snowy White, known for creating some of the finest and most familiar guitar riffs in music history, they continue their legendary style with this metal anthem. Phil Lynott’s vocal and bass attack notched up another career defining song as well, which served the band well for years and has truly been one of their most revered tunes.

Seven more incredible performances from these rock and roll warriors continue to thrill the listener including more Phil Lynott hard rock classics like Killer on the Loose, the blues belter Sugar Blues and the stellar title smash Chinatown. More rockers flow like the funk infused Having a Good Time and the brilliant Thin Lizzy anthem Genocide (The Killing Of The Buffalo). Even the heartwarming Sweetheart, which showcases a soulful side of Lynott’s writing and vocal ability, truly made this album a fan favorite for years to come. The incredible album closer Hey You truly captures the band’s love for playing hard rock and playing it righteously, never to be duplicated on wax ever again.

Tragically, we lost the musical genius Phil Lynott in 1986 and more recently the passing of guitar legend Gary Moore. This was their first collaboration together as members of Thin Lizzy, and with the impeccable musicianship of Scott Gorham and Brian Downey all delivering the goods, Chinatown is considered one of their greatest achievements in their enduring album catalog.

Mastered impeccably from the original authorized Warner Music tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and Capitol Records in Hollywood, Friday Music in very honored and enthusiastic to welcome back the much heralded Thin Lizzy classic Chinatown for the first time on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl.

To make this more of a treasure for your limited edition Thin Lizzy collection, we are also including a first time gatefold cover which features the legendary original album cover art as well as the original photos and artwork included in the album inner sleeve not seen in years. As usual, we will include a poly sleeve to protect your hard rockin’ audiophile vinyl and a poly bag to preserve your very cool album cover.
  • The Thin Lizzy 180 Gram Audiophile Series Continues At Friday Music!

Madison Gate Records and SPACELAB9 Announce the Release of THE RAID 2 Soundtrack

Madison Gate Records and SpaceLab9 announced today the worldwide release of THE RAID 2 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The album hits digital retailers today, March 25th, with the CD format coming April 29, 2014, followed by a deluxe vinyl LP edition early summer 2014. THE RAID 2 will arrive in U.S. theaters this Friday, March 28th, and is distributed by Sony Pictures Classics.

Composer Joseph Trapanese (The Raid: Redemption, Oblivion, TRON: Uprising) returns along with Aria Prayogi and Fajar Yuskemal to provide a score equal parts electronic and orchestral, deeply layered and breathtaking, all while perfectly complimenting the frenetic on-screen action of THE RAID 2. The 24-track album features original motion picture score with over an hour of music, plus the original song

“Hush” written and performed by Indonesian jazz artist Arti Dewi.

The Honeymoon Workbook by Good Willsmith

The Honeymoon Workbook is the first LP by Chicago-based trio Good Willsmith. Previous tape releases on the band's own Hausu Mountain label showcased improvised sessions of maximal, multi-instrumental loops. The Honeymoon Workbook streamlines their explorations of the noise/drone underground into a densely packed song cycle, performed live in a single session and presented without overdubs.

Workshopped over the course of the band's west coast tour in the summer of 2013, The Honeymoon Workbook evolved from a series of simple cues and graphical scores into a mammoth, continually fluctuating set of overlapped compositions. Seamless adjustments in instrumentation and texture occur between segments as looped incarnations of earlier motives accumulate into all-consuming drones.

Natalie Chami weaves melodies and progressions from her analog synthesizers into a consonant foundation, while layering choral vocal leads and harmonies into the mix. Doug Kaplan processes electronic tabla and tambura into squelching rhythmic mantras, and blasts guitar, synth, and vinyl records deeper into effects-manipulated oblivion. Max Allison pours sustained low-end tones from synths, oscillators and bass guitar, as he interjects bursts of spoken-word cassette tapes and contact-mic feedback into the din. Taken all together, cresting through a series of contrasting atmospheres, Good Willsmith's generative patchwork of looping live input has the potential to paralyze listeners into the state of sweat lodge dissociation that the trio enter while performing.

14 Years of Desperate Research documents Good Willsmith's live performances from shortly after their formation in 2012. The album's two sessions showcase the band in a period of dense, metal-and noise-infused drone improvisation, predating their experiments with physical media sampling and extra-textual spoken word elements.

Plow United - Sleepwalk: A Retrospective

Paper + Plastick Records is proud to announce the release of influential pop-punk band PLOW UNITED’s collection Sleepwalk: A Retrospective on 2xLP.

This 34-track release features select songs the band’s three full-length releases, the self-titled debut (Creep, 1995), Goodnight Sellout (Creep, 1996), and the posthumous Narcolepsy (Creep, 1998). The D-side of the retrospective features songs from various compilations or singles the band released, including the unreleased instrumental “Monte.”

Stereokiller.com's review said "If you grew up during the 1990's and listened to pop punk, these songs will induce an undeniable sense of nostalgia. Plow United represent a time when life was care-free and for those of you who can relate, I think we could all use a reminder of what our lives used to be like."
