Jim Croce's LPs To Be Reissued
Jim Croce's back catalog of three studio albums is scheduled for reissue in September by Rhino in tribute to the 35th anniversary of his death. "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" and "Life & Times" have never been available in their original form on CD while "I Got a Name" has been out of print for a number of years.
"For eight years, I've been trying to get the permission to re-release my dad's three albums on ABC Records," Croce's son AJ tells Billboard.com. "And just last week, I got the OK. So in September, they're going to be available for the first time on CD, and then also in their original form, on vinyl."

Veteran McCartney Wows Audience
The Coachella Festival in Indio, California opened on Saturday with very impressive sets from a number of artists, but none seemed to get the crowd going like Paul McCartney. The iconic Beatle took the stage for a 2-1/2 hour set (well past the curfew) and covered his whole career from the Fab Four to Wings to his solo material.
But the emotional highlight was his announcement that Friday was the 11th anniversary of the death of his wife Linda. Barely keeping his emotions in check, he played a moving version of "My Love."

The vinyl version of the debut album by the 'supergroup' Chickenfoot (Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith) will also include a bonus track, "Bitten By the Wolf."
It has also been revealed that the CD booklet will be printed on heat-sensitive paper so that, when you touch the band logo on the cover, pictures of the band are shown. Amazing stuff.

Material Girl OK After Fall From Horse
Madonna suffered minor injuries on Saturday when she fell from a horse while riding in the Hamptons. It's reported that papparazzi jumped from behind a bush and startled the horse which threw the singer to the ground. She was taken to a Southhampton for treatment and released. According to her spokesperson, she was treated for minor injuries and bruises and will remain under observation by doctors. Can't a person get some privacy?

System of a Down’s John Dolmayan was among the 12 drummers who auditioned for the Smashing Pumpkins, the band's official Website reported. Due to the overwhelming response, additional tryouts are scheduled to take place in May.

London-based singer/songwriter James Yuill is set to release his debut album, "Turning Down Water For Air," in North America on May 26th. "Turning Down Water For Air" is a fusion of Yuill’s many influences, from the emotional songwriting of artists like Nick Drake, Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens to the dynamic beats of Justice, Chemical Brothers and Aphex Twins.
Following the release of debut hit single “No Surprise” last month, Yuill has released his second single, “No Pins Allowed,” via iTunes as part of a 6-track EP that also includes a remix from Post War Years and a cover of Radiohead’s “Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box.”

Entertainment Weekly recently posted the most heartbreaking songs of all time which, in turn, brought over 2,000 responses. They used these suggestions and their editor's knowledge on the subject to come up with the "50 Most Heartbreaking Songs of All Time."
What's interesting is that veteran artists sure knew how to pick songs about heartbreak. 78% of the selection are from singers and bands who have been performing for more than 25 years.

Animals’ organist Alan Price was born in County Durham, England in 1941.
Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) was found dead in his apartment in 2002.
In 1959, Pete Seeger left the Weavers after they recorded a commercial for Lucky Strikes cigarettes over his objections.
Legendary funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell was born today in Long Beach, N.J in 1944.
Mark Volman, better known as the Flo half of Flo & Eddie and of Turtles’ fame, was born in Los Angeles in 1947.
Chess blues and R&B vocalist Willie Mabon died in Paris in 1985.
In 1993, Saxophonist Steve Douglas, 55, died of heart failure while in a recording session with guitarist Ry Cooder. He played on "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Be My Baby," produced by his school chum Phil Spector.
In 1980, AC/DC announced that Brian Johnson will replace Bon Scott.
The Beatles released "Ticket to Ride" in the U.S. in 1965.
Today in 1980 the song "Call Me" by Blondie topped the charts and stayed there for 6 weeks.
Also in 1980, for the first time ever the top five artists on the US country chart were all female, Crystal Gayle who was at #1, with Dottie West, Debbie Boone, Emmylou Harris and Tammy Wynette making up the rest of the Top 5.
In 1968, John and George followed Paul and Ringo's lead and left the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram in Rishikesh, India, two weeks before their studies were completed. Lennon later wrote "Sexy Sadie" about the yogi's attraction to Mia Farrow.
Patti Smith released her biggest hit, "Because the Night" in 1978. It was co-written by Bruce Springsteen.
Prince & the Revolution's "Kiss" tops the pop, R&B, and dance charts simultaneously. 1986, Prince started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1986 with 'Kiss.' Prince also had the #2 song 'Manic Monday', by The Bangles, which he wrote under the pseudonym 'Christopher.'
The oldest working musician in Britain, Conrad Leonard died in 2003 (age 104). Composer and pianist Leonard had worked with Cole Porter, Petula Clark and at the BBC during his career. Until the age of 103 years, he played the piano every Thursday at lunchtime in the Plantation Cafe at Squire's Garden Centre in Twickenham.

Aerosmith released the album ‘Get a Grip’ in 1993, which became their first album to debut at #1. It went on to sell 7 million copies in a 2-year time span in the United States alone and sold 20 million copies worldwide as well as winning the band two Grammy awards.
American singer Alan Dale died in 2002. During the 50's he had his own US TV & radio show, had the 1955 US #7 single 'Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White.'

The Elvis Presley movie "Viva Las Vegas" premiered in 1964.
Shania Twain released her self-titled debut album in 1993.
In 2002, in the dispute over who owned the rights to Nirvana's recordings former members Dave Grohl and Kirst Novoselic asked a Seattle Court to prove that Courtney Love was mentally stable. They told the court that Love was 'irrational, mercurial, self-centered, unmanageable, inconsistent and unpredictable.' They also claimed a contract was invalid because Love was 'stoned' at the time.
Godsmack were at #1 on the US album chart in 2003 with ‘Faceless.’
In 1999, Steve Marriott died after his home in Essex, England, caught fire. With the Small Faces, the vocalist was responsible for witty singles like "Itchycoo Park," as well as the excellent psychedelic album Ogden's Nut Gone Flake.
Luther Vandross was born in New York in 1951. Vandross died on July 2, 2005 (age 54) two years after suffering a major stroke.
In 1957, Elvis Presley topped the chart with "All Shook Up." Otis Blackwell allegedly wrote the song after Shalimar Music exec Al Stanton challenged him to come up with a tune in the space of time it took Stanton to drink a Pepsi.

Ernie Maresca ("Shout! Shout! Knock Yourself Out") turns 70
Folk singer Cisco Houston died of cancer in San Bernardino, California in 1961. The influential troubadour traveled America with Woody Guthrie and was Leadbelly's houseguest.
Chicago slide guitarist Earl Hooker died from tuberculosis in 1970 at age 41.
In 2003, legendary vocalist/pianist Nina Simone died at her home in France (aged70). Her biggest hit was the smoky "My Baby Just Cares For Me."
In 1978, Folk singer Sandy Denny died at age 31 after falling down a flight of stairs. You can hear her on Led Zeppelin IV's "Battle of Nevermore"
In 1994, Courtney Love turned in the shotgun Kurt Cobain used to kill himself to a guns-for-tickets trade-in program.
The Beatles debuted at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, England in 1961.
Elton John made his solo concert debut in 1970 when he opened for T. Rex in London.
Alice Cooper went to #1 on the US album chart in 1973 with 'Billion Dollar Babies.' Also a #1 album in the UK.
Neal Matthews of The Jordanaires died of a heart attack in 2000. He sang on Presley's 'Don't Be Cruel' and 'Hound Dog.' Matthews also worked with Ricky Nelson, Patsy Cline, Red Foley, Johnny Horton, Jim Reeves, George Jones, Marie Osmond, Tom Jones and Merle Haggard.
In 2001, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck was arrested at Heathrow Airport after allegedly causing a drunken ruckus during a flight from Seattle to London. He's later found innocent of all charges.
In 1945, the Bihari brothers founded Modern Records. Over the years, the label would become an R&B powerhouse, releasing discs by John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, and Etta James.
In 1960, Dick Clark admitted that he had a financial stake in more than a quarter of the records played on American Bandstand. The congressional committee investigating payola ordered him to sell off several of his holdings.

He was a touring member of The Beach Boys, filling in for an ailing Brian Wilson in 1964 and 1965. His guitar playing can be heard on ‘Strangers in the Night’ by Frank Sinatra, ‘You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin’‘by The Righteous Brothers and ‘I'm a Believer’ by The Monkees.
Jack Nitzsche was born today in Chicago in 1937. His arrangements have graced albums by the Monkees, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, and Mink DeVille. He also wrote "Needles and Pins."
Peter Frampton was born in Beckenham, England in 1950. He surprised everyone when his album Frampton Comes Alive! became one of the biggest-selling albums of the '70s.
Songwriter Felice Bryant died of cancer in 2003. Wrote many hits with her husband Boudleaux including; The Everly Brothers, 'Bye Bye Love', 'All I Have To Do Is Dream', 'Wake Up Little Susie' and 'Raining In My Heart' a hit for Buddy Holly. In 2004, Green Day issued a statement to counter a widespread rumor that frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has died. "Despite what you may have heard rumored on the Internet," the band say, "Billie Joe did not recently die in a car accident."
The late Roy Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas in 1936. His haunting voice has graced some of the most extraordinary songs of the rock era, including the 1961 #1 "Running Scared."
In 1975, Pete Ham, 27, of Badfinger hung himself in his London garage. He wrote the classic song "Without You" with finger bassist Tom Evans. Evans also took his life after becoming frustrated with his career.
Born on this day in 1939, Ray Peterson, US singer (1960 US No.7 single 'Tell Laura I Love Her').
Born on this day in 1960, Steve Clark, guitarist with Def Leppard. Clark died on January 8th 1991, aged 30 after a night of heavy alcohol consumption combined with prescription drugs.

Last year it was White Album #0000006, this year it's White Album #0000005 that makes the #1 top album sale on eBay, selling for $9k more than its predecessor at $30k. The first four White Albums were reportedly given to the Beatles themselves. Save for an acetate of "Carnival Of Light" showing up, its hard to imagine any Beatles vinyl artifact fetching more than these two White Albums.
Also worthy of notice is the first Hip Hop record to show up on the weekly Top 5, Kool D.J. A.J.'s "Ah, That's The Joint" also topped the month of June. Tool and Pavement, two bands who came into existence post Reagan administration, give this years list a touch of youth.

Last year it was White Album #0000006, this year it's White Album #0000005 that makes the #1 top album sale on eBay, selling for $9k more than its predecessor at $30k. The first four White Albums were reportedly given to the Beatles themselves. Save for an acetate of "Carnival Of Light" showing up, its hard to imagine any Beatles vinyl artifact fetching more than these two White Albums.
Also worthy of notice is the first Hip Hop record to show up on the weekly Top 5, Kool D.J. A.J.'s "Ah, That's The Joint" also topped the month of June. Tool and Pavement, two bands who came into existence post Reagan administration, give this years list a touch of youth.

What can entice consumers to buy a new copy of something they already own, never cared about, or were too young to buy in the first place?
The folks who release music reissue packages believe bells and whistles are the answer. Today is the second annual Record Store Day, a celebration of independent music merchandisers, and shoppers will find remastered, remixed, super-sized, bonus-boasting editions of vintage albums in elaborate multi-disc packages and simple, straightforward vinyl releases.
Many share a common time frame: 1988-1996. Return visits to albums by Pearl Jam, the Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Green Day, Sinead O'Connor, Lenny Kravitz, Beck, and others seem to signal that the time to reappraise - or re-sell - the alt-rock revolution is upon us.
"There's a bit of a 20-year rule in pop culture," says Billboard executive editor Rob Levine, who points out that folks who graduated from college two decades ago are now ripe to get nostalgic. "Now you have this resurgence of interest in the kind of Lollapalooza culture, for lack of a better word."

Record Store Day Roundtable:
Discussing the resurgence of metal vinyl with key record labels
On Saturday, April 18, 2009, hundreds of independently owned music stores across the country will celebrate Record Store Day. Originated in 2007, Record Store Day became an annual event where indie record stores would come together with artists and labels to celebrate the art and unique culture of music on a communal and national level.
A website, www.recordstoreday.com, was soon developed to advertise participating and coordinating stores.
Various shops around the country celebrate Record Store Day in several fashions, be it through special sales, rare and exclusive merchandise, in-store meet-and-greets with artists, and even full-blown concerts on-site.
To commemorate this year’s Record Store Day, I have coordinated a round-table discussion with several record label executives and got their opinions on the resurgence and collectability of heavy metal vinyl. Participating in this discussion are Paula Hogan (General Manager, CANDLELIGHT RECORDS USA), Austin Stephens (Director of Sales, ROADRUNNER RECORDS), Pat Egan (Director of Sales, RELAPSE RECORDS), Tracy Vera (Senior VP, METAL BLADE RECORDS), and Simon Füllemann (General Manager, METAL BLADE RECORDS GmbH).

Cub Country Announce New Album
Cub Country have announced the upcoming release of their new full-length "Stretch The Skull Cover and Smile" on July 7th on Future Farmer Records. The new album marks a slight departure from the Americana/Alt country sound of the band's earlier recordings all the while staying true to the sound Cub Country has developed over the last nine years.
It's been a long time since the release of 2004's "Stay Poor Stay Happy," the last full-length album from Cub Country and a lot has changed for front man Jeremy Chatelain. The past four years have taken Chatelain and his music from the tree-filled skyline of Chapel Hill, NC to the ocean expanses of Seattle, WA and finally back to the mountain-town of Salt Lake City, UT; each town painting the latest Cub Country long-player, "Stretch That Skull Cover and Smile" with its image.

Massachusetts metallers KILLSWITCH ENGAGE have unveiled the cover artwork (see below) for their new album, due on June 23 via Roadrunner Records. The CD will follow 2006's "As Daylight Dies", which is approaching gold status in the United States (signifying 500,000 copies shipped).
For the first time in its career, the band worked with an outside producer — Brendan O'Brien, who has previously helmed recordings for AC/DC, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, PEARL JAM and STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, to name a few. KILLSWITCH ENGAGE guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, a noted producer in his own right who has recorded all of the band's previous albums, took a co-producer role on this record alongside O'Brien.

Now I'm wondering if you know of any other palindrome song titles that exist, especially any that actually became Pop hits.

DEAR MEL: Impressive challenge you've provided. Now let's look at the results of this investigation.
But before we look at the results, let's remind everyone that a palindrome is a word, phrase, number, or any other sequence of units that are read the same forward or backward, character for character without regard for punctuation.
I have found and personally verified 20 palindrome song titles, all listed below in alphabetical order by title followed by the artist's name and year of issue.
Though only one artist is named here, some of these tunes exist by more than one person or group:

Most intriguing is that all but six are from the 2000s.
There must be others, and if you have one to add to the list please send the info. It will remain a work in progress.
Other palindromic observations:
William Bottin is the only performer with more than one title, and he provides three. All are instrumentals taken from the same album, “I Love Me, Vol. 1” (Tudor B000CA8302).
Other instrumentals on the list: “Malayalam” (Rudresh Mahanthappa), Jazz from India; “UFO Tofu” (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones), traditional Bluegrass; and “Xanax” (Not Breathing), a New Age track.
A dreary vocal of “Xanax” exists, by a group named Elephant Parade (2008). “Rotator” (Stickleback) is mostly instrumental, but includes a few scattered vocal interludes. Oh yes, a Stickleback is a fish.
The lyrics of “Bob” (Weird Al Yankovic) and “Madam, I'm Adam” (Dan Crow) are made up of other palindromes.
“Flee to Me, Remote Elf” (Badger King) and “Solos” (Yuri) are the only ones by female singers.
“Solos” (Yuri) and “Somos” (Julio Iglesias) are both sung in Spanish, with “Solos” being my favorite of these palindrome titles.
While none of these specific tracks, most of which are album cuts, reached anything close to Pop hit status, Ray LaMontagne's “Trouble” album is approaching 500,000 units sold. Ray is a singer-songwriter, who accompanies himself on acoustic guitar and evokes flattering comparisons to guys like Van Morrison and Stephen Stills.
DEAR JERRY: Around the same time as “Indian Reservation” became a huge hit there was another song I liked very much, the latter being one no one else but me seems to know.
Other than the approximate time of release, the only other clue I have is a girl's name: Eydie. She is mentioned in a sad way (i.e., “you're so right for me, Eydie, but I'm all wrong for you”).
Can you identify this record with so little info?

DEAR GIGI: You've provided just enough, but you're not the only one on the trail of Eydie … or is it Evie?
Wayne A. Lela, of Woodridge, Ill., thinks it might be:
“A song about a woman named Evie received some air play in the early '70s. I remember only the melody, but no one I ask knows the title or and artist.
Do you?”
Evie and Eydie sound very much alike, but Wayne is correct. The lady's name, as well as the title, is indeed “Evie.” It is a May 1971 45 rpm release by Johnny Mathis (Columbia 45371).
“Evie” is backed with “Think About Things,” though neither side charted nationally.
That very month, Paul Revere and the Raiders' “Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indians)” entered the Top 40 en route to No. 1.
IZ ZAT SO? While researching palindromes in preparation for this week's column, I came across 10 that could easily be picked as song titles — especially since instrumentals can have any moniker:
“Dammit, I'm Mad”; “Dennis and Edna Sinned”; “No Stetson”; “Oh No, Don Ho” “Sex at Noon Taxes”; “So Many Dynamos”; “Solo Gigolos”; “Too Hot to Hoot”; “Top Spot”; and “We Few.”

I have found and personally verified 20 palindrome song titles, all listed below in alphabetical order by title followed by the artist's name and year of issue.
Though only one artist is named here, some of these tunes exist by more than one person or group:

“Malayalam” (Rudresh Mahanthappa) 2004
“No Lemon No Melon” (William Bottin) 2004
“Party Trap” (William Bottin) (2004)
“Pull Up” (Mr. Vegas) 2004
“Racecar” (Addictions) 2007
“Radar” (Morphine) 1995
“Rats Live on No Evil Star” (Ookla the Mok) 2009

Most intriguing is that all but six are from the 2000s.
There must be others, and if you have one to add to the list please send the info. It will remain a work in progress.
Other palindromic observations:
William Bottin is the only performer with more than one title, and he provides three. All are instrumentals taken from the same album, “I Love Me, Vol. 1” (Tudor B000CA8302).
Other instrumentals on the list: “Malayalam” (Rudresh Mahanthappa), Jazz from India; “UFO Tofu” (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones), traditional Bluegrass; and “Xanax” (Not Breathing), a New Age track.
A dreary vocal of “Xanax” exists, by a group named Elephant Parade (2008). “Rotator” (Stickleback) is mostly instrumental, but includes a few scattered vocal interludes. Oh yes, a Stickleback is a fish.
The lyrics of “Bob” (Weird Al Yankovic) and “Madam, I'm Adam” (Dan Crow) are made up of other palindromes.
“Flee to Me, Remote Elf” (Badger King) and “Solos” (Yuri) are the only ones by female singers.
“Solos” (Yuri) and “Somos” (Julio Iglesias) are both sung in Spanish, with “Solos” being my favorite of these palindrome titles.
While none of these specific tracks, most of which are album cuts, reached anything close to Pop hit status, Ray LaMontagne's “Trouble” album is approaching 500,000 units sold. Ray is a singer-songwriter, who accompanies himself on acoustic guitar and evokes flattering comparisons to guys like Van Morrison and Stephen Stills.
DEAR JERRY: Around the same time as “Indian Reservation” became a huge hit there was another song I liked very much, the latter being one no one else but me seems to know.
Other than the approximate time of release, the only other clue I have is a girl's name: Eydie. She is mentioned in a sad way (i.e., “you're so right for me, Eydie, but I'm all wrong for you”).
Can you identify this record with so little info?

DEAR GIGI: You've provided just enough, but you're not the only one on the trail of Eydie … or is it Evie?
Wayne A. Lela, of Woodridge, Ill., thinks it might be:
“A song about a woman named Evie received some air play in the early '70s. I remember only the melody, but no one I ask knows the title or and artist.
Do you?”
Evie and Eydie sound very much alike, but Wayne is correct. The lady's name, as well as the title, is indeed “Evie.” It is a May 1971 45 rpm release by Johnny Mathis (Columbia 45371).
“Evie” is backed with “Think About Things,” though neither side charted nationally.
That very month, Paul Revere and the Raiders' “Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indians)” entered the Top 40 en route to No. 1.
IZ ZAT SO? While researching palindromes in preparation for this week's column, I came across 10 that could easily be picked as song titles — especially since instrumentals can have any moniker:
“Dammit, I'm Mad”; “Dennis and Edna Sinned”; “No Stetson”; “Oh No, Don Ho” “Sex at Noon Taxes”; “So Many Dynamos”; “Solo Gigolos”; “Too Hot to Hoot”; “Top Spot”; and “We Few.”

Despite economic gloom sales of vinyl records have almost doubled in the United States.
And record companies are not just selling old records to devoted fans, vinyl appears to be as popular with the younger generation as with the old rockers.
'People are realising that vinyl is the collectors' format,' says Chris Carmino, manager of the huge Amoeba records in Hollywood, which many say is the biggest music store in the world.
'CDs are becoming just vessels of information, something to throw into your computer for the purpose of getting that music into your iPod.'
Amoeba has just extended its vinyl selection, eating away at the nearby CD's floorspace.
'There are two types of music fan,' Chris explains, 'the casual fan that is satisfied with having music on their hard drive, and the collectors. And for them vinyl is the ultimate format.'
Overall though comparative sales still put CDs millions of units ahead of vinyl.
In the United Kingdom sales of records last year stayed the same, although there has been a rush over recent years for limited edition vinyl singles.
But it's the changing demographic that is interesting to analysts.
The top-selling LP in the US was Radiohead's In Rainbows.
In the UK it was Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago.
Both albums that have had appeal to both the young and old.
Record companies see small benefits re-releasing older albums on vinyl. They may not sell many, but they do retail for about A$ 40.00 or more.
Just West of London is the Vinyl Factory, a pressing plant thriving on the revived interest.
They also run a busy record shop called Phonica in the heart of the West End.
Tough times have seen a quarter of small music shops close down last year but the owners here say diversity is the key to survival.
'There's never been the same collectablilty about CDs,' says creative director Sean Bidder, who predicts the end may be nigh for the poor little compact disc.
'It will come down to digital music, easy access very cheap, plus something you can collect, and that will be vinyl.
'The boom we've noticed here has been within the vinyl album market, the limited edition release of new albums like Morrissey, The Pet Shop Boys and Damon Albarn and the old classic releases that have been repackaged. That's a growing change in the market place really.'
Phonica has t-shirts stating proudly 'Vinyl Kills The MP3 Industry'.
It's obviously an exaggeration, but even amongst artists we've interviewed recently, you can sense a love of the good old black spinning disc.
'Music sounds better on vinyl, Pet Shop Boy Chris Lowe told me. 'It's just a fact isn't it? And also it's the process of getting it out, putting it on.'
'I actually really love the physical copy, I love the artwork,' said Annie Lennox. 'Although I listen to CDs in my car - I like to listen when I'm travelling.'
'I predicted it! laughed Roger Daltrey when we told him that vinyl is back.
'They're idiots, those record company people - they swapped those wonderful records for those silly little pieces of plastic!'
Next Saturday is National Record Shop Day - a new creation, intended to encourage sales of physical music, both vinyl and CD in stores across the UK.
But somehow, just like the records themselves, the argument about how you listen to yours is bound to go round and round and round and round.
