Dylan Radio Show News
According to the latest rumor, Bob Dylan may have done his last Theme Time Radio Hour broadcast on Sirius/XM. Last Wednesday's show was called Goodbye and ended with Woody Guthrie's "So Long, It's Been Good to Know Yuh" followed by the needle running out in the record groove. A mention on the broadcasters site mentioning the Fall Season of the show has also disapeared.
Dylan has done a total of 100 shows to date.

Bonnaroo Festival
David Byrne is scheduled to pick all the acts for one of the stages at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee this June. Included, along with a performance of his own current show, will be Santigold, the Dirty Projectors, Ani DiFranco, St. Vincent and Katzenjammer.
“This was an easy one," stated Byrne. "I basically reeled off a list of what I was listening too recently or who I had seen live recently and Ashley and Co did the rest. It’s not like these folks need me to introduce them to a wider audience, at least I don’t think they do…I’m just thrilled they’ll be added to the festival lineup.”

Grateful Dead Photo Book
For several years now, music artists have made recordings of each concert of a tour available to the public in a limited edition, but the Grateful Dead are taking that concept to a new level. They are releasing a photo book for each of the 17 stops on their current tour. The books are $22.95 for softcover, $32.95 for hardback and $34.95 for hardback with ImageWrap which has one of the photos printed directly on the cover

Pixies' Reissues
All of the Pixies‘ studio records are being reissued in Limited Edition and Deluxe Edition box sets titled Minotaur that will be released on June 15, 2009. Rolling Stone Magazine has learned that the sets — which include the Come on Pilgrim EP (1987), Surfer Rosa (1988), Doolittle (1989), Bossanova (1990) and Trompe Le Monde (1991) — are being repackaged with the assistance of the two men responsible for art directing and shooting the photographs for the original albums, from Surfer Rosa’s iconic flamenco dancer to Trompe’s popping eyeballs: Vaughan Oliver and Simon Larbalestier.
Jeff Anderson, the founder of A+R (Artist in Residence), who is overseeing the project, says he didn’t want to touch the original master recordings of the Pixies’ albums, so the reissues will feature the music as it was originally released.
For $175, the Deluxe Edition gives fans the five albums on a 24k layered CD and a Blu-ray for a total of five discs, plus a DVD of the band’s 1991 Brixton Academy gig (a year before their split) that also includes all their videos. The Deluxe Edition features additional artwork by Oliver and a 54-page book. The Limited Edition costs $450 and includes the entire Deluxe Edition plus all five albums on 180 gram vinyl, a Giclée print of Oliver’s artwork and a 72-page hardcover book.

Capitol and Reprise have been digging deep into the legacy of Frank Sinatra with a number of greatest hits collections. 2000's "Classic Sinatra: His Greatest Performances 1953-1960," included some of his greatest Capitol recordings and sold over 2 million copies. In 2008 "Nothing But the Best," which included hits from Reprise, debuted at #2 on the Billboard Album chart and stayed in the Top 100 for much of the year. Earlier this year, additional Reprise material was released on Seduction: "Sinatra Sings of Love" which has remained the highest charting album on the Jazz charts by a veteran artist.
Capitol digs into the vaults on June 2 with "Classic Sinatra II," 21 more signature tracks, including 15 from his legendary concept albums. These recordings were made between 1954 and 1960 with the arrangements and orchestras of Nelson Riddle, Gordon Jenkins and Billy May and are regularly hailed as the pinnacle of his artistry.
Included are hits such as "Love and Marriage," "(Love is) The Tender Trap," "High Hopes," "Learnin' the Blues" and "Angel Eyes" along with a previously unreleased track, "This Can't Be Love."

Reports: Traffic, Sales Up At 2009 Record Store Day

Traffic, Sales Up At 2009 Record Store Day

Thanks to the 82 exclusive releases and limited availability, customers lined up at record stores all around the country on Saturday morning and helped kickoff Record Store Day 2009 with a bang. Reports suggest traffic pick-ups and sales volume this year will be more than last year's inaugural event.
"It was my best day by far," says Eric Levin, owner of Criminal Records in Atlanta and the head of the Assn. of Independent Media Stores coalition. "We had 600 people in the store; it was well-controlled chaos. My vinyl sales alone yesterday was larger than last year's total Record Store Day take."
Michael Kurtz, executive director of the Music Monitor Network, tells Billboard that from the stores that he heard from, "the majority of the stores had matched last year's volume by mid-afternoon."
He added that stores, who have been already selling increasing amounts of vinyl to both the old and younger demos, were particularly shocked by "the massive amount of young people coming into stores looking for vinyl." The exclusives and other commercial releases timed for Record Store Day, really add the extra sizzle, store executives tell Billboard. "All these little gems that the labels created for us - what an incredible effort from the small labels to the big guys, it was really stunning," Criminal Records Levin says.

An Introduction To The Obsession Of Record Collecting

In 1977, at age 6, I bought my first record, Kiss Alive, and that started an obsession that, for better or worse, has taken a big chunk of both my time and money over the years. When I really started buying albums by bands other than Kiss, in the early 80s usually courtesy of Columbia House, it was always vinyl, even as my peers were buying cassettes to play in their boomboxes. The way I looked at it, I could tape the record, but I couldn't make a record of the cassette. From that point forward, vinyl was the way to go.
Now, at 38, I have a collection, modest by some standards and huge by others, that includes well over 4000 records (over twice as many titles as I have on the vastly inferior CD format). I spend a lot of time down in the basement listening to them, going through them, looking at the cover art. My kids, at only five and two years old, already know how to properly handle them. After all, the records will theirs one day if they play their cards right. The bottom line is that, while it may seem pathetic or immature to a lot of people, those records are a big part of my life.

Jim Croce's LPs To Be Reissued
Jim Croce's back catalog of three studio albums is scheduled for reissue in September by Rhino in tribute to the 35th anniversary of his death. "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" and "Life & Times" have never been available in their original form on CD while "I Got a Name" has been out of print for a number of years.
"For eight years, I've been trying to get the permission to re-release my dad's three albums on ABC Records," Croce's son AJ tells Billboard.com. "And just last week, I got the OK. So in September, they're going to be available for the first time on CD, and then also in their original form, on vinyl."

Veteran McCartney Wows Audience
The Coachella Festival in Indio, California opened on Saturday with very impressive sets from a number of artists, but none seemed to get the crowd going like Paul McCartney. The iconic Beatle took the stage for a 2-1/2 hour set (well past the curfew) and covered his whole career from the Fab Four to Wings to his solo material.
But the emotional highlight was his announcement that Friday was the 11th anniversary of the death of his wife Linda. Barely keeping his emotions in check, he played a moving version of "My Love."

It has also been revealed that the CD booklet will be printed on heat-sensitive paper so that, when you touch the band logo on the cover, pictures of the band are shown. Amazing stuff.

Madonna suffered minor injuries on Saturday when she fell from a horse while riding in the Hamptons. It's reported that papparazzi jumped from behind a bush and startled the horse which threw the singer to the ground. She was taken to a Southhampton for treatment and released. According to her spokesperson, she was treated for minor injuries and bruises and will remain under observation by doctors. Can't a person get some privacy?

London-based singer/songwriter James Yuill is set to release his debut album, "Turning Down Water For Air," in North America on May 26th. "Turning Down Water For Air" is a fusion of Yuill’s many influences, from the emotional songwriting of artists like Nick Drake, Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens to the dynamic beats of Justice, Chemical Brothers and Aphex Twins.

EW's Top Heartbreaking Songs
Entertainment Weekly recently posted the most heartbreaking songs of all time which, in turn, brought over 2,000 responses. They used these suggestions and their editor's knowledge on the subject to come up with the "50 Most Heartbreaking Songs of All Time."
What's interesting is that veteran artists sure knew how to pick songs about heartbreak. 78% of the selection are from singers and bands who have been performing for more than 25 years.

Entertainment Weekly recently posted the most heartbreaking songs of all time which, in turn, brought over 2,000 responses. They used these suggestions and their editor's knowledge on the subject to come up with the "50 Most Heartbreaking Songs of All Time."
What's interesting is that veteran artists sure knew how to pick songs about heartbreak. 78% of the selection are from singers and bands who have been performing for more than 25 years.

In 2002, in the dispute over who owned the rights to Nirvana's recordings former members Dave Grohl and Kirst Novoselic asked a Seattle Court to prove that Courtney Love was mentally stable. They told the court that Love was 'irrational, mercurial, self-centered, unmanageable, inconsistent and unpredictable.' They also claimed a contract was invalid because Love was 'stoned' at the time.
Godsmack were at #1 on the US album chart in 2003 with ‘Faceless.’
In 1999, Steve Marriott died after his home in Essex, England, caught fire. With the Small Faces, the vocalist was responsible for witty singles like "Itchycoo Park," as well as the excellent psychedelic album Ogden's Nut Gone Flake.
Luther Vandross was born in New York in 1951. Vandross died on July 2, 2005 (age 54) two years after suffering a major stroke.
In 1957, Elvis Presley topped the chart with "All Shook Up." Otis Blackwell allegedly wrote the song after Shalimar Music exec Al Stanton challenged him to come up with a tune in the space of time it took Stanton to drink a Pepsi.
In 1959, a 13-year-old Dolly Parton released her first single, "Puppy Love."
Billboard acutely observed, "She sounds about 12 years old."

Rock's wondrous frontman, Iggy Pop, was born today in 1947 as James Osterberg. He's led the wild and wildly influential band, The Stooges.
The Cure's Robert Smith was born in Sussex, England in 1959.

Ernie Maresca ("Shout! Shout! Knock Yourself Out") turns 70
Folk singer Cisco Houston died of cancer in San Bernardino, California in 1961. The influential troubadour traveled America with Woody Guthrie and was Leadbelly's houseguest.
Chicago slide guitarist Earl Hooker died from tuberculosis in 1970 at age 41.
In 2003, legendary vocalist/pianist Nina Simone died at her home in France (aged70). Her biggest hit was the smoky "My Baby Just Cares For Me."
In 1978, Folk singer Sandy Denny died at age 31 after falling down a flight of stairs. You can hear her on Led Zeppelin IV's "Battle of Nevermore"
In 1994, Courtney Love turned in the shotgun Kurt Cobain used to kill himself to a guns-for-tickets trade-in program.
The Beatles debuted at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, England in 1961.

In 1945, the Bihari brothers founded Modern Records. Over the years, the label would become an R&B powerhouse, releasing discs by John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, and Etta James.
In 1960, Dick Clark admitted that he had a financial stake in more than a quarter of the records played on American Bandstand. The congressional committee investigating payola ordered him to sell off several of his holdings.

Hits include ‘By the Time I Get to Phoenix’, ‘Wichita Lineman’, and ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’, has released more than 70 albums selling over 45 million records. As a session musician in the 1960s he worked with Bobby Darin, Ricky Nelson, The Monkees, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Velvet Underground, Frankie Laine, The Association, Jan & Dean and The Mamas & the Papas. He was a touring member of The Beach Boys, filling in for an ailing Brian Wilson in 1964 and 1965. His guitar playing can be heard on ‘Strangers in the Night’ by Frank Sinatra, ‘You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin’‘by The Righteous Brothers and ‘I'm a Believer’ by The Monkees.
Jack Nitzsche was born today in Chicago in 1937. His arrangements have graced albums by the Monkees, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, and Mink DeVille. He also wrote "Needles and Pins."
Peter Frampton was born in Beckenham, England in 1950. He surprised everyone when his album Frampton Comes Alive! became one of the biggest-selling albums of the '70s.
Songwriter Felice Bryant died of cancer in 2003. Wrote many hits with her husband Boudleaux including; The Everly Brothers, 'Bye Bye Love', 'All I Have To Do Is Dream', 'Wake Up Little Susie' and 'Raining In My Heart' a hit for Buddy Holly. Other acts to record their songs included Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Tony Bennett, Simon & Garfunkel, Sarah Vaughan, Grateful Dead, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, Count Basie, Dean Martin, Ruth Brown, Cher, R.E.M. and Ray Charles.
Paul Carrack is born today in Sheffield, England in 1951. He has sung with Ace, Squeeze, and Mike & the Mechanics on the #1 "The Living Years."

In 2004, Green Day issued a statement to counter a widespread rumor that frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has died. "Despite what you may have heard rumored on the Internet," the band say, "Billie Joe did not recently die in a car accident."
The late Roy Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas in 1936. His haunting voice has graced some of the most extraordinary songs of the rock era, including the 1961 #1 "Running Scared."
In 1975, Pete Ham, 27, of Badfinger hung himself in his London garage. He wrote the classic song "Without You" with finger bassist Tom Evans. Evans also took his life after becoming frustrated with his career.
Born on this day in 1939, Ray Peterson, US singer (1960 US No.7 single 'Tell Laura I Love Her').
Born on this day in 1960, Steve Clark, guitarist with Def Leppard. Clark died on January 8th 1991, aged 30 after a night of heavy alcohol consumption combined with prescription drugs.
Dexy's Midnight Runners went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1983 with 'Come On Eileen.'
In 1988, Whitney Houston smashed a chart record held by The Beatles and The Bee Gees when 'Where Do Broken Hearts Go', became her seventh consecutive US #1.

The Earl Hines Band began a residency at Harlem, N.Y.'s Apollo Theatre in 1943. Among the musicians are future superstars Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Sarah Vaughan.
In 1956, Elvis Presley plays Las Vegas for the first time, as a young rock 'n' roller. The response from middle-aged audiences was so poor that Presley fulfilled only one week of his two-week stand.
In Caversham, England in 1960, a very young John Lennon and Paul McCartney performed together as the Nerk Twins.

Also worthy of notice is the first Hip Hop record to show up on the weekly Top 5, Kool D.J. A.J.'s "Ah, That's The Joint" also topped the month of June. Tool and Pavement, two bands who came into existence post Reagan administration, give this years list a touch of youth.

What can entice consumers to buy a new copy of something they already own, never cared about, or were too young to buy in the first place?
The folks who release music reissue packages believe bells and whistles are the answer. Today is the second annual Record Store Day, a celebration of independent music merchandisers, and shoppers will find remastered, remixed, super-sized, bonus-boasting editions of vintage albums in elaborate multi-disc packages and simple, straightforward vinyl releases.
Many share a common time frame: 1988-1996. Return visits to albums by Pearl Jam, the Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Green Day, Sinead O'Connor, Lenny Kravitz, Beck, and others seem to signal that the time to reappraise - or re-sell - the alt-rock revolution is upon us.
"There's a bit of a 20-year rule in pop culture," says Billboard executive editor Rob Levine, who points out that folks who graduated from college two decades ago are now ripe to get nostalgic. "Now you have this resurgence of interest in the kind of Lollapalooza culture, for lack of a better word."

Record Store Day Roundtable:
Discussing the resurgence of metal vinyl with key record labels
On Saturday, April 18, 2009, hundreds of independently owned music stores across the country will celebrate Record Store Day. Originated in 2007, Record Store Day became an annual event where indie record stores would come together with artists and labels to celebrate the art and unique culture of music on a communal and national level.
A website, www.recordstoreday.com, was soon developed to advertise participating and coordinating stores.
Various shops around the country celebrate Record Store Day in several fashions, be it through special sales, rare and exclusive merchandise, in-store meet-and-greets with artists, and even full-blown concerts on-site.
To commemorate this year’s Record Store Day, I have coordinated a round-table discussion with several record label executives and got their opinions on the resurgence and collectability of heavy metal vinyl. Participating in this discussion are Paula Hogan (General Manager, CANDLELIGHT RECORDS USA), Austin Stephens (Director of Sales, ROADRUNNER RECORDS), Pat Egan (Director of Sales, RELAPSE RECORDS), Tracy Vera (Senior VP, METAL BLADE RECORDS), and Simon Füllemann (General Manager, METAL BLADE RECORDS GmbH).

Cub Country Announce New Album
Cub Country have announced the upcoming release of their new full-length "Stretch The Skull Cover and Smile" on July 7th on Future Farmer Records. The new album marks a slight departure from the Americana/Alt country sound of the band's earlier recordings all the while staying true to the sound Cub Country has developed over the last nine years.
It's been a long time since the release of 2004's "Stay Poor Stay Happy," the last full-length album from Cub Country and a lot has changed for front man Jeremy Chatelain. The past four years have taken Chatelain and his music from the tree-filled skyline of Chapel Hill, NC to the ocean expanses of Seattle, WA and finally back to the mountain-town of Salt Lake City, UT; each town painting the latest Cub Country long-player, "Stretch That Skull Cover and Smile" with its image.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE: New Album Artwork Unveiled
Massachusetts metallers KILLSWITCH ENGAGE have unveiled the cover artwork (see below) for their new album, due on June 23 via Roadrunner Records. The CD will follow 2006's "As Daylight Dies", which is approaching gold status in the United States (signifying 500,000 copies shipped).
For the first time in its career, the band worked with an outside producer — Brendan O'Brien, who has previously helmed recordings for AC/DC, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, PEARL JAM and STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, to name a few. KILLSWITCH ENGAGE guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, a noted producer in his own right who has recorded all of the band's previous albums, took a co-producer role on this record alongside O'Brien.
