Bob Dylan's The Witmark Demos Set for October 19 Release Along With First Re-Release of the Original Mono Recordings

NEW YORK, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records will release Bob Dylan's The Bootleg Series Volume 9 – The Witmark Demos on Tuesday, October 19th, in conjunction with Columbia/Legacy's release of the artist's first eight long-playing albums in a box set titled Bob Dylan – The Original Mono Recordings. Both sets have been long sought-after by collectors and fans worldwide, with The Witmark Demos seeing their first commercial release nearly five decades after they were first recorded, and The Original Mono Recordings returning to the marketplace for the first time ever on Compact Disc, as well as on fully analogue 180-gram vinyl. Both The Bootleg Series Volume 9 - The Witmark Demos and Bob Dylan - The Original Mono Recordings are available for pre-order now at SonyMusicDigital.com/bobdylan and Amazon.com.

The Witmark Demos features 47 Bob Dylan songs recorded by the artist – accompanied only by his acoustic guitar, harmonica and occasionally piano – for his first music publisher, Leeds Music, in January 1962, and for his second publisher, M. Witmark & Sons, between 1962 and 1964. Listening to these recordings, one can trace Dylan's dramatic growth as a songwriter from early traditionally-styled songs like "Man On The Street" and "Ramblin' Gamblin' Willie" through the social commentary of "Blowin' In The Wind, "The Times They Are A Changin'" and "Masters Of War", and the groundbreaking lyrical genius of "Mr. Tambourine Man." All of these songs, and all the others on The Witmark Demos, were written – and their subsequent demos recorded – before Bob Dylan turned 24 years old.

Among the many gems found on The Witmark Demos are 15 Bob Dylan songs that were recorded by the artist only for these sessions, and which have never been officially released to the public until now. These include the plaintive "Ballad For A Friend," the civil rights era-inspired "Long Ago, Far Away" and "The Death Of Emmett Till," and the poignant "Guess I'm Doing Fine."

While many of these early songs on The Witmark Demos found their way onto Bob Dylan's own albums, much of the world's first exposure to them was through their recordings by others, including Peter, Paul and Mary and Stevie Wonder ("Blowin' In The Wind"), Judy Collins ("Tomorrow Is A Long Time") and The Byrds ("Mr Tambourine Man"). It's a testament to the lasting cultural impact of these songs that they have been covered by more than a thousand artists in the nearly fifty years since these demos were created.

The Witmark Demos also features a deluxe booklet featuring in-depth liner notes by noted music historian Colin Escott, as well as rare photographs of Bob Dylan captured during the same period as these early recordings.

The Original Mono Recordings is comprised of Bob Dylan's first eight long-playing albums, painstakingly reproduced from their first generation monaural mixes as the artist intended them to be heard: One channel of powerful sound, both direct and immediate. While stereo recordings had been available as early as the mid-1950s, mono was still the predominant – and often preferred – mode of recording and mixing by the top artists of the 1960s. As a result, artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan devoted their attention to the mono mixes, leaving the stereo mixing process to studio engineers.

The Original Mono Recordings are accompanied by a deluxe booklet, featuring vintage photographs of Bob Dylan and an expansive essay from renowned author and critic – and longtime Dylan aficionado – Greil Marcus. Each disc in the set comes in its own individual jacket which faithfully replicates the original album artwork, complete with labels and stickers that were found on the original 1960s releases.

These eight albums – spanning the artist's self-titled debut in March 1962, through John Wesley Harding released on December 27, 1967 – are universally regarded as some of the most important works in the history of recorded music. Together with The Witmark Demos, they provide the public with a wide-ranging view of Bob Dylan's work during the 1960s, and chronicle his amazing evolution from fledgling songwriter to one of the world's most inventive and singular recording artists.

Hip hop star Scott la Rock was shot dead in New York in 1987, the latest victim in the Brooklyn, Bronx street war.

Born today in 1918, composer, pianist, conductor, Leonard Bernstein. Composed music for 1957 'West Side Story', 'On The Waterfront', conducted the New York Philharmonic at age 25. Died on October 14, 1990.

Bass player Doug Stegmeyer shot himself dead in 1995. He'd worked with many artists including Billy Joel Hall and Oates and The Carpenters.

In 1995, Dwayne Goettel (Skinny Puppy) was found dead of an apparent heroine overdose at the home of his parents in Canada.

Robert Fisher from New Romantic duo Naked Eyes and Climie Fisher died of cancer in 1999 (age 39). Wrote songs for Rod Stewart, Milli Vanilli, Fleetwood Mac and Jermaine Jackson. Fisher also worked as a producer, working with various acts including Eric Clapton.

Academy Award-winning film score composer and record producer Jack Nitzsche died of a heart attack in 2000. Produced The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield and The Walker Brothers. Musical scores including The Exorcist, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, co-wrote ‘Up Where We Belong with Buffy Sainte-Marie' from 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman.

In 2001, American singer, actress Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas (age 22). The small Cessna plane crashed a few minutes after take off killing everyone on board with exception to four passengers who were pulled from the wreckage but later died. Aaliyah had been filming a video for her latest release ‘Rock The Boat’ on the island.

Born on this day in 1950, Willy DeVille of Mink DeVille. Died of pancreatic cancer on 7th Aug 2009.


History:

Canadian singer, songwriter Paul Anka was at #1 on the UK singles chart in 1957 with "Diana" (written about his brother's baby-sitter). His only UK #1 as an artist, Anka was the first teenage solo act to reach that plateau.

Staten Island, New York doo wop group The Elegants went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1958 with their re-worked version of the Mozart lullaby, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" re-titled "Little Star". The Elegants would be around in one form or another until the 1980s, but never had another hit record.



Little Eva went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1962 with "The Loco-motion." The Carole King and Gerry Goffin song was offered to Dee Dee Sharp ("Mashed Potatoes"), who turned it down. The writers had their babysitter record it who took it to #1.

In 1965, two female Beatles fans hired a helicopter to fly over the house the Beatles were renting in Beverly Hills, California and jumped from the helicopter into the swimming pool. Cool....

Bobbie Gentry started a four week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1967 with "Ode To Billy Joe."

Brian Wilson returned to performing live with The Beach Boys in Honolulu in 1967 after a 2 year hiatus. The group had just released ‘Heroes and Villains’ in the US.

The Beatles traveled to Bangor, Wales in 1967, to attend the Spiritual Regeneration League conference and to study meditation with Marharishi Mahesh Yogi. So begins the group’s relatively brief flirtation with Eastern mysticism.

Steppenwolf’s landmark single “Born To Be Wild” peaked at #2 on the U.S. pop chart in 1968 (behind the Rascals “People Gotta Be Free”). The song was written by Mars Bonfire (aka Dennis Edmonton, the brother of Steppenwolf drummer Jerry Edmonton).

In 1970, a party was held to celebrate the official opening of 'Electric Ladyland' studios in New York City, New York. Artists who went on to record at the studio include: Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, AC/DC, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa and Guns N' Roses.

Elton John made his US live debut in 1970 when he kicked off a 17-date tour. He opened for David Ackles at "The Troubadour" in Los Angeles, CA. In the audience that night were Don Henley, Quincy Jones and Leon Russell. Elton’s latest single "Border Song" had just debuted at number 92 on the US chart.

Also in 1970, Emerson Lake and Palmer made their live debut at The Guildhall, Plymouth, England.

One hit wonders, Stories started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1973 with "Brother Louie."



The Allman Brothers' "Ramblin' Man" was released in 1973.

Bobby Darin performed his final concert, at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1973. He died at the age of 37 on December 20, 1973 following open-heart surgery.

Bruce Springsteen's album "Born to Run" was released in 1975.

Boston released its self-titled debut album in 1976. It becomes one of the all-time best selling albums

Gary Numan released "Cars" in 1979.

The Knack started a five week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1979 with "My Sharona," the group's only US chart topper. Lead singer Doug Fieger said he was inspired to write the tune by Sharrona Alperin, a 17 year old senior at Los Angeles' Fairfax High.



R.E.M. appeared at The Scorpio, Charlotte, North Carolina in 1981. This show was billed as "Charlotte's First Gay New Wave Disco and Costume Party", with the $3 tickets benefitting various gay-lesbian charities.

The Time's second album "What Time Is It?" was released in 1982.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards signed a contract with Columbia Records in 1983. The deal provides the Rolling Stones $28 million for four albums.

Paul Simon's "Graceland" was released in 1986.



In 1993, Snoop Doggy Dogg was released on $1 million bail after being accused of being involved with the murder of a member of the By Yerself gang during a shooting in Los Angeles. He was acquitted of the charges in 1996.

In 1994, Jimmy Page and Robert plant recorded their MTV unplugged set at London's television centre. The show was called "Unledded."

Jimmy Buffett crashed his Grumman G-44 Widgeon seaplane on take-off in Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1994. Buffett swam away from the wreckage.

A deranged man who had escaped from a mental institution near Helsinki Finland in 1997 was arrested. The man had planned to set fire to the stage that Michael Jackson was performing from was arrested before he was able to light the gasoline he had put on the stage.

Dolly Parton released the album "Hungry Again" in 1998.

During Metallibash 2001 in San Francisco, Metallica cover band Creeping Death is joined onstage (for a half-dozen songs) by Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett.

In 2004, Alice Cooper, criticized the near countless number of Rock musicians supporting Democratic presidential nominee, John Kerry. Cooper, a Republican, tells Canadian Press that fans shouldn`t get their political views from musicians. "Why are we Rock stars? Because we`re morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night."

In 2005, the war of words continues between Sharon Osbourne and Iron Maiden following the group's final Ozzfest appearance five days earlier. In the latest missive, Sharon Osbourne admits that she cut Iron Maiden's sound during the band's set, maintaining it was in retaliation for on stage remarks singer Bruce Dickinson made criticizing her husband, Ozzy. The ever charming Dickinson says he doesn't hold a grudge against Ozzy or Black Sabbath over the incident.

Also in 2005, two former members of Guns N' Roses were suing singer Axl Rose for allegedly naming himself sole administrator of the US rock band's copyrights. Slash and Duff - otherwise known as Saul Hudson and Michael McKagan, accused Rose of "arrogance and ego". The legal action claimed the singer "was no longer willing to acknowledge the contributions of his former partners".

In 2007, Arthur Brown accidently set himself on fire while singing his big hit, Ironically called "Fire." Oops....

"Halloween II" soundtrack was released in 2009. The Moody Blues' "Nights In White Satin," Rod Stewart's "(I Know) I'm Losing You" and Foghat's "I Just Want To Make Love to You," are on the soundtrack. The film, in theaters three days later, was written and directed by Rob Zombie.

VINYL FORMAT. Memphis is home to several of rock's most endearingly off-kilter rock storytellers, from Jim Dickinson to Jeffrey Evans to Ross Johnson. To that list, one can now add Shawn Cripps, leader of The Limes. On the band's debut full-length, Rhinestone River, Cripps retains the musical talents of Harlan T. Bobo, who previously helped on The Limes' "Rock 'n' Roll Heart" single. Bobo's hypnotic keyboards perfectly complement Cripps's gritty guitar work and vocals, particularly on "Sounds Like a Shimmy." Rhinestone River also features contributions by Memphis scene stalwarts Ross Johnson, Paul Buchignani (Afghan Whigs, Bobo's backing band), Alicja Trout (Lost Sounds, River City Tanlines) and Bruce Saltmarsh ('68 Comeback, Porch Ghouls). The title track, with its wobbly gait and lyrics like "Sitting on this barstool, sweating the rhinestone river," can induce secondhand drunkenness in anyone within earshot. "Rhinestone River" is the closest an American band has gotten to the pickled poetry of the Country Teasers. The momentum and melody of "Bottom of the Hole" unfurl like the narrative thrust of a bourbon-soaked anecdote at two in the morning. The album's crown jewel is the closing track, "Last Year." Cater-cornered rock guitars and Cripps's talkin' vocal style build up to a woozy climax that culminates in a feral "woo-hoo." Like the other great songs on Rhinestone River, it threatens to fall apart several times but Cripps, with a little help from his friends and his engaging personality, holds it all together.

BUSH Frontman To Perform With CARLOS SANTANA

BUSH singer/songwriter/guitarist Gavin Rossdale is scheduled to perform with guitar legend Carlos Santana this Wednesday, August 25 in Vegas for an event to celebrate the Santana's new album, "Guitar Heaven…The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time." Rossdale, who makes a guest appearance on the LP, will join Santana for a new rendition of the T.REX hit "Bang A Gong".

"Guitar Heaven…The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time" arrives in stores September 21.

Later this fall, BUSH will release "Everything Always Now" (Interscope), the band's first new studio album in nine years. The CD was produced by Bob Rock (METALLICA, AEROSMITH).

GIBSON To Reproduce Classic RANDY RHOADS Les Paul Guitar

The 1974 Les Paul Custom guitar that Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Randy Rhoads played on the classic albums "Blizzard of Ozz" and "Diary of a Madman" has been one of the most requested reissues ever, according to Gibson.com. The Gibson Custom Shop has announced the release of this legendary axe. In collaboration with the Rhoads family, the Jackson Custom Shop built 60 exact replicas of the first Randy Rhoads Jackson guitar, often referred to as the Concorde. More information will be made available soon.

According to TheMusicZoo.com, Randy's tribute model is a direct replica of his original 1980 Jackson asymmetrical V-shaped guitar that he personally designed. He intended to call this body style the Concorde and it is widely regarded as the "first pointy guitar." The original guitar had been kept at the Rhoads family music school since his death, and they say it had not been out of the case in over 20 years.

In 1982, Rhoads, the then-lead guitarist for OZZY OSBOURNE, and two others were killed at Flying Baron Estates, just outside Leesburg, Florida, when their small plane struck Osbourne's tour bus, then crashed into a mansion.

SONIC SYNDICATE: Entire New Album Available For Streaming

"We Rule The Night", the new album from the Swedish modern rock/metal act SONIC SYNDICATE, is now available for streaming in its entirety on the band's MySpace page. Due in Europe on August 27 via Nuclear Blast Records, the CD was recorded at Bohus Sound studios in Kungälv, Sweden with producer Toby Wright, who has previously worked with KORN, SLAYER, MÖTLEY CRÜE, KISS, FEAR FACTORY, IN FLAMES, STONE SOUR and OZZY OSBOURNE, among others.

In addition to the album's standard version, "We Rule The Night" will be made available in a limited-edition digipack featuring two bonus songs and a DVD.

CRADLE OF FILTH: New Album Artwork Unveiled

On November 1, 2010, the latest chapter of the band's dark history is set for release via Peaceville Records on the band's own AbraCadaver imprint (November 9 in North America via Nuclear Blast Records). Titled "Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa", their ninth studio album is, in the word's of CRADLE's infamous frontman Dani Filth, "without doubt the fastest and most brutal album we've created to date. As an acquaintance of the band so aptly noted, this is like 'IRON MAIDEN on crack in a graveyard of angels!' This album is CRADLE at our most sinister and darkened fairytale," continues Dani. "A gothic horror themed slay-ride of fervour and perversion; yet amidst the orchestral melodrama and lush, cinematic production, there sits stalwart a ravening beast of furious riffing, flesh ripping vocals and monstrous, unstoppable percussion."

CRADLE OF FILTH — consisting of Dani Filth on vocals, Paul Allender and James McIlroy on guitar, David Pybus on bass, Martin Skaroupka on drums and Ashley Ellyllon on keyboards — recorded the follow-up to 2008's "Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder" at Monkey Puzzle studios near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. The bandmembers remain stalwarts to the satanic horror ethos by again composing a fully blown concept album, this time based on Adam's first wife, the lascivious Demoness Lilith; throwing Medieval nuns, Knights Templars, Greek mythology and lashings of sex, occult lore and violent bloodshed into the smelting pot, to create a darkly erotic nightmare set to their unique scope of supreme vampyric metal. And with an as-near-as-dammit release date of All Hallow's Eve 2010, CRADLE OF FILTH are snarling at the leash to get out to all of their fans across the world. "We can't wait to play this shit live," admits Dani.

For this release, the band wanted mastery of their own destiny, choosing to release the album on their very own AbraCadaver label in conjunction with Peaceville Records. Seattle radio station KISW is presenting a 20th-anniversary party for QUEENSRŸCHE's "Empire" album on Tuesday, August 31 at a secret location in the Seattle area. The location will be revealed only when you buy your tickets so word doesn't get out. KISW is giving away a few tickets and a few others are being made available to members of the QUEENSRŸCHE fan club for $20 each.

QUEENSRŸCHE has partnered with Capitol/EMI for the September 28 release of an expanded 20th-anniversary edition of the band's triple platinum-certified breakout album "Empire". Peter Gabriel: Album Art - Hand Signed Limited Edition Fine Art Prints

A series of limited editions of prints of Gabriel’s album images have been launched. There are fifteen pictures in all, covering 35 years of recording. Each uses the finest Giclee printing methods on heavyweight paper. Each is signed in pencil by Gabriel and the artists involved.

PETER GABRIEL: ALBUM ART

Peter Gabriel’s album sleeves have long been celebrated for their startling, instantly identifiable style and creative energy. Ever since Peter Gabriel 1 (aka Car) in 1974, his cover art has been created in collaboration with some of the world’s foremost artists, sculptors and photographers.

A series of limited editions of prints of Gabriel’s album images have been launched. There are fifteen pictures in all, covering 35 years of recording. Each uses the finest Giclee printing methods on heavyweight paper. Each is signed in pencil by Gabriel and the artists involved.

It’s an impressive line up of some of the art world’s most influential names from the past three decades. It includes the likes of Storm Thorgerson of the groundbreaking early ‘70s agency Hipgnosis, Malcolm Poynter, Julian Grater, David Scheinmann, Nils Udo, Susan Derges, York Tilyer, Marc Bessant and the estates of Robert Mapplethorpe and Trevor Key.

The images range from deceptively simple, beautifully expressive black and white portraiture, through to complex montages built out of pictures, stage sets, and graphic effects. Despite this diversity of styles, there is a consistent and elusive aesthetic running through the work. Ultimately, it’s a spirit of experiment, and excellence in execution. These are carefully considered and meticulously rendered works, reflective of Gabriel’s approach to his music.

What’s intriguing is that (particularly with the earlier works) the images are as hi-tech and as fresh as anything produced today, but the ways in which they were created were lo-tech and labour intensive and shaped some of the tricks of today’s computer-generated graphic Photoshop environment.

In “Scratch”: Gabriel’s outstretched fingers tear away the cover. This is a 35mm black and white still, with torn strips of paper glued on top. It was then re-photographed; the new shot was meticulously tippexed to disguise the rougher joins. It was then photographed yet again to produce the end result. Today, a similar effect would involve a basic design program and a lot of messing around, but it could never achieve the same result.

In the late 70s, Les Krims created “Krimsography”, based on experimentation with Polaroid film. Storm Thorgerson and Peter himself used this methodology to squeeze, squash and force images as they emerged from the camera. That resulted in the distorted face-to-camera shot of Gabriel, which became cover of “Melt”.

“Us” was arguably the first Photoshop-manipulated Mac-produced image released to a commercial audience. It took two days to cut and paste all the elements (which included stage sets from Robert Lepage) and a further two weeks to complete. The mix of images and rendered surfaces was created using Version 1.0 of Photoshop on a desktop Mac with no RAM and just 20mb of internal memory.

The stories that attach to the creation of the images are as unusual as the images themselves: studios stuffed with bendy mirrors to morph Gabriel’s face, low grade prints from Boots 1-hour processors, back-yard photo shoots, and on one famous occasion (for “Ovo”) the building of a nest on a lake which was subsequently burnt by an unwitting gardener who thought it was just a heap of discarded wood.

”I’ve always loved artwork and album art. I think it’s been a huge part of what people identify and feel about the music and the records” said Peter Gabriel “I used to love gatefold sleeves…when you would sit with a new record and open it up it was just a precious moment. Now we’ve gone into this digital world a lot of that has been lost. We’ve being looking at ways of getting quality prints of the artwork for a long time and I’m happy now it has happened.”

For each cover, there are one hundred 19” x 19” prints (some sizes vary) starting price £599, and just twenty-five 28” x 28” prints (some sizes vary) starting price £999. Same number sets can be obtained.

Neil Young announces new Daniel Lanois-produced album

Folk-rock legend Neil Young is set to release a new album on September 28 on CD, vinyl and through iTunes. 'Le Noise' was recorded in a Los Angeles mansion, and produced by U2 and Bob Dylan collaborator Daniel Lanois. The record will be available on Blu-ray in November, followed by a release as an app for the iPhone and iPad.

Speaking to Rolling Stone recently, Lanois said: "We cut a couple of solo acoustic songs, but the rest is very electric. There's no band, but I got in there with my sonics. There's nothing else out there like it."

'Le Noise' is the follow-up to last year's 'Fork In The Road'.

Sufjan Stevens releases new EP Date

'All Delighted People' is the follow-up to 2009's 'The BQE' and is now available to download for $5 from http://www.sufjanstevens.bandcamp.com/. Built around two versions of the song 'All Delighted People', other tracks on the EP include 'Enchanting Ghost', 'The Owl And The Tanager' and a 17-minute long 'Djohariah'.

Brian Eno To Release New Album In November

Brian Eno is scheduled to release a new studio album,'Small Craft On A Milk Sea' late in the fall. The LP, recored alongside with Jon Hopkins and Leo Abrahams, will be released on November 15 in the UK. The former Roxy Music star's album will be available on CD, digital-download and Limited Edition Box Set, featuring heavyweight vinyl, 2xCD and lithographic print.

A special Collectors Edition Box Set will also include a signed and numbered screen print by Eno.

Rudy Lewis of the Drifters was born in 1936. He was found dead in his bed on May 20, 1964; some accounts say the cause was a drug overdose, while others who knew him say that Lewis, who was a binge eater, choked to death in his sleep. The group's other lead singer, Johnny Moore, stepped into the breach that same morning on the scheduled session for "Under the Boardwalk", and was the Drifters' lead vocalist for the remainder of their tenure on Atlantic and beyond.

Born on this day in 1947, Keith Moon, drums, The Who, (1967 US #9 single "I Can See For Miles" and rock opera albums 'Tommy' & 'Quadrophenia'). Moon died on September 7, 1978.




History:

In 1962, John Lennon married Cynthia Powell at Liverpool's Mount Pleasant register office. He then played a gig that night with The Beatles at Liverpool's Riverpark Ballroom.

The Rolling Stones appeared on UK TV show Ready, Steady, Go! for the first time in 1963, performing their debut single "Come On." The group made a total of 20 appearances on the show between 1963 and 1966.

The Beatles performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 1964. Selections from this concert and the one a year later comprise "The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl" album.

In 1965, security guards at a Manchester TV studio hosed down 200 Rolling Stones fans after they broke down barriers while waiting for the band to arrive for a performance.

In 1966, on their final tour of America, The Beatles performed at Shea Stadium in New York City, New York. Unlike the previous year's performance, which had sold out, there were 11,000 empty seats in the 55,600 seat stadium. The Beatles earned more than the previous year, receiving $189,000 for their performance.

Ringo Starr temporarily quit The Beatles in 1968. He returned a week later and finds his drum set strewn with flowers. They missed him after all.....

During a North American tour in 1968, The Jimi Hendrix Experience appeared at Singer Bowl, Flushing Meadow Park, New York. Also on the bill Soft Machine and Big Brother and the Holding Company.

Johnny Cash started a four-week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1969 with 'Johnny Cash At San Quentin.'

The Rolling Stones started a four week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1969 with "Honky Tonk Women," the group's fifth US #1. Also #1 in the UK.



The self titled-debut, "Blind Faith," entered the U.S. album chart in 1969, eventually reaching #1.

Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground performed together for the last time at the New York Club 'Max's Kansas City' in 1970. Reed worked as a typist for his father for the next two years, at $40 per week.

Max Weinberg joined Bruce Springsteen`s E Street Band on drums in 1974.

Former Free guitarist Paul Kossoff`s heart stops beating for several minutes in 1975. Doctors revived him but Kossoff`s poor health claimed his life the following year.

Also in 1975, the first Fleetwood Mac album with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, 'Fleetwood Mac' was released. It is one of the all-time best sellers.

Hamilton Joe Franks And Reynolds went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1975 with, "Fallin' In Love."

In 1980, The Heatwave Festival in Toronto, Canada took place with Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, The B-52's, The Pretenders, Rockpile and The Rumour. Tickets cost $30, with only 50,000 people attending the festival lost over $1 million.

Also in 1980, US police killed an escaped drug addict who had shot one of their officers during a Grateful Dead concert.

In 1986, Sigue Sigue Sputnik came up with an idea to sell advertising space between the tracks on their forthcoming new album. It was a non-starter. Bad idea all the way around...

In 1991, Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, Pop Will Eat Itself, Dinosaur Jr, Chapterhouse, Nirvana, Silverfish, Babes in Toyland, James, The Fall, De La Soul, Blur, Teenage Fanclub, Flowered Up, The Fat Lady Sings, Kingmaker, Mercury Rev, Sisters of Mercy and Neds Atomic Dustbin all appeared at this year’s three day Reading Festival in England.

Natalie Merchant, former lead singer for 10,000 Maniacs, became the first guest in a series of live chats on the Elektra Entertainment Group's World Wide Web site in 1995.

In 2004, Queen, became the first UK rock band to receive official approval in Iran, where Western music was strictly prohibited. Lead singer, Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991, was of Iranian ancestry and bootlegged albums had been available for years.

Les McKeown, the lead singer of the Bay City Rollers, appeared in court charged with drugs offenses in 2005. McKeown, aged 49, was accused of conspiring with four other people, including the band's drummer Pat McGlynn, to supply cocaine. He was arrested in Dalston, east London, in June as part of a major police operation.

In 2007, comedy writer Buddy Sheffield, sued Disney alleging that he originally came up with the idea for Hannah Montana but was never compensated by Disney. In the lawsuit, Sheffield claimed that he pitched an idea for a TV series with the name of ‘Rock and Roland’ to Disney Channel in 2001 with the plot of a junior high student who lived a secret double life as a rock star.

Madonna kicked off her 86-date Sticky & Sweet Tour at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff Wales in 2008. It became the highest grossing tour by a solo artist, breaking the previous record Madonna achieved with her 2006 Confessions Tour. Madonna's first venture with Live Nation, was estimated to have grossed $280 million.

The Foo Fighters June ’08 concerts held at London's Wembley Stadium were released on DVD in the UK in 2008. The disc features 18 performances including the surprise guest appearances by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones (for renditions of Zeppelin's Rock & Roll" and "Ramble On").



Aerosmith’s "You Gotta Move," from ‘08's Honkin' On Bobo,” is the theme song for World Wrestling Entertainment's SummerSlam event at Staples Center in L.A. in 2009. What an honor....

In 2005, Robert Moog, inventor of the synthesiser died (age 71), four months after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Dr Moog built his first electronic instrument, a theremin - aged 14 and made the MiniMoog, "the first compact, easy-to-use synthesiser" in 1970. He won the Polar prize, Sweden's "music Nobel prize," in 2001. Wendy Carlos' 1968 Grammy award-winning album, Switched-On Bach, brought Dr Moog to prominence.

In 2008, drummer Buddy Harman died of congestive heart failure, (age 79). Worked with Elvis Presley (‘Little Sister’), Patsy Cline (‘Crazy’), Roy Orbison (‘Pretty Woman’), Johnny Cash (‘Ring Of Fire’), Tammy Wynette (‘Stand By Your Man’). Was the first house drummer for The Grand Ole Opry. He can be heard on over 18,000 recordings.

In 1923, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, an ordinance was passed forbidding dancers from gazing into the eyes of their partner. Yeah, that will work....

The classic song "Ain't Misbehavin'" was recorded by Fats Waller in 1938.

Ricky Nelson recorded "Lonesome Town" in 1958.

Elvis Presley started a three-week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1961 with 'Something For Everybody' his sixth US #1 album.

Patsy Cline recorded the classic Willie Nelson song, "Crazy" in 1961. She was still on crutches after going through a car windshield in a head-on collision two months earlier.



The Rolling Stones started a three week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1965 with 'Out Of Our Heads' the group's first US #1 album. It’s the first Rolling Stones album recorded in stereo.

Barry McGuire's "Eve Of Destruction" was released in 1965.

The Lovin' Spoonful's "Do You Believe In Magic" was released in 1965.

In 1966, on their last ever US tour The Beatles performed in two cities due to a cancellation due to rain the previous day. First they performed at Crosley Field in Cincinnati, Ohio. Then they flew to St. Louis, Missouri, for a concert at Busch Stadium, where they performed under a tarpaulin due to heavy rain. It was this gig that convinced Paul McCartney that The Beatles should stop performing live.

The Doors were fired from the Whiskey-A-Go-Go in 1966 following Jim Morrison’s profanity filled/Oedipus laced version of "The End." Fortunately, the band signed a recording contract with Elektra Records only days earlier.

The Doors started recording their second album at Sunset Sound Studios, Hollywood, California in 1967.

In 1972, Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane was arrested after a fight broke out on stage during a concert when the police had been called 'pigs'. Grace Slick was maced and another group member injured at the show in Akron.

In 1976, it was announced by RCA Victor records that the sales of Elvis Presley records passed the 400 million mark.

Aerosmith recorded “Come Together” for the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band soundtrack in 1978. George Martin produced The Beatles’ cover.



In 1983, Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone had a four-hour brain surgery operation, after being found unconscious in a New York Street where he had been involved in a fight.

Prince released the soundtrack to "Graffiti Bridge" in 1990.

Ratt released the album "Detonator" in 1990.

Los Angeles police raided Michael Jackson's Neverland estate in 1993 looking for evidence of child abuse.

The soundtrack from the film 'Sleepless In Seattle' went to #1 on the US album chart in 1993.

In 1995, R.E.M. sued Hershey Foods, claiming the company exploited its name when it ran a "Kit Kat - R.E.M. Concert" sweepstakes in Hershey candy bars. The suit was eventually dropped.

In 1996, former Talking Heads lead singer David Byrne sued to prevent the rest of the group from touring as "The Heads." The suit was settled out of court.

Rick James was released from prison in 1996 after serving two years for assault.

At a press conference in the San Francisco Hard Rock Cafe in 1997, Carlos Santana unveiled a limited-edition t-shirt bearing his artwork. He autographed 500 of the shirts for distribution to foreign and domestic markets.

In 1997, Oasis' third album 'Be Here Now', became one of the fastest selling albums ever, shifting over a million copies on the first day of release.

In 2000, Survivor filed a lawsuit against TVT Records after they released a soundtrack to the TV show ‘Survivor.’ Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan said, “It’s unfortunate that after 23 years of building, promoting, and protecting the name of our band, someone can suddenly come along and release a recording that uses our name and takes away everything we have worked for.”

African and Carribean stamps were issued in 2002 honoring American girl groups.

Staind were at #1 on the US album chart in 2005 with 'Chapter V.'

In 2006, a man surfing the Internet in America foiled three men who broke into a Liverpool shop in Liverpool, England. The man who had logged onto a site streaming live footage of Mathew Street and a forthcoming Beatles festival saw the men smashing a window of a shop and climb inside. He phoned Merseyside police who arrested the men.

Also in 2006 - German prosecutors announced that they had decided against opening an investigation into Madonna after she performed a controversial mock crucifixion scene at a concert on August 20.

"Dear Mr. Fantasy: A Celebration For Jim Capaldi" was released in 2007. The album was a London tribute to the late Traffic percussionist/vocalist. There are performances by Capaldi's Traffic bandmate Steve Winwood, the Who's Pete Townshend, ex-Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman, the Eagles' Joe Walsh, Bad Company's Simon Kirke and former Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord.

Paul McCartney issued "Live At The ICA" EP in 2007. The set was recorded at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts in conjunction with the first iTunes Festival. The EP contains versions of "Jet" and "Coming Up." The recording was initially available exclusively through iTunes.

In 2008, pedophile and ex-pop star Gary Glitter returned to Thailand after being refused entry to Hong Kong. Chinese authorities informed the UK Foreign Office they had barred Glitter from entry. He was earlier deported from Vietnam after spending almost three years in jail for sexually abusing two girls. He flew to Hong Kong from Bangkok after refusing to fly to the UK, and had made a plea for medical treatment after saying he was suffering a heart attack.
