Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest (Vinyl)



On 120 gram white vinyl; comes with a digital download coupon! Halcyon Digest is Deerhunter's fourth album and their first to be released on 4AD worldwide. The album was recorded in at Chase Park Transduction Studios in Deerhunter's hometown of Athens, GA with the band self-producing and Ben Allen enlisted to mix it (he also worked on Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion). Shunning the current trend of using online portals to drip feed every detail to announce a record, Halcyon Digest was launched with the band wanting a return to Xerox postering instead. Fans were encouraged to poster local haunts in return for being the first to know news on the record and touring plus receiving exclusive tracks from the band. Hundreds of photos were sent in from New York to London to Moscow and all points between.

Following the massive critical success of Deerhunter's last album Microcastle, expectations are feverishly inflated for the new Deerhunter release. Luckily, the Atlanta quartet seem to operate in their own realm, away from the rolling cycles of pressure and praise. And it shows in Halcyon Digest, which is an impressively self-assured work; with a level of detail and care that belies its two-week recording process. Deerhunter are one of those rare acts that it is nigh on impossible to second guess - what they record apparently depends greatly on their mood at the time, rather than any great pre-planning. And so it should be no great shock that Halcyon Digest is a world away from the frenetic wall of distorted guitars that (at times) defined Microcastle. Indeed, if this album resembles anything, it is more the Atlas Sound album Logos, recorded by Deerhunter main man Bradford Cox post-Microcastle. In other words, Halcyon Digest is noticeably more calm, tuneful and reliant on electronics and acoustics than Microcastle, especially on album closer "He Would Have Laughed," recorded in tribute to Jay Reatard.

Jimmy Eat World - Invented (Vinyl)



On 180 gram vinyl! Jimmy Eat World are happy to present their highly anticipated new album, Invented. Recorded in Tempe, Arizona at the band's Unit 2 studio, Jimmy Eat World reunited with Mark Trombino, the producer on the band's breakthrough album, Bleed American, and their seminal earlier albums, Static Prevails and Clarity. "We're very excited about Invented," said lead singer and guitarist Jim Adkins, "it was great reconnecting and creating an album with Mark Trombino, we can't wait for our fans to hear it." Invented marks the band's first studio album since 2007's Chase This Light. Jimmy Eat World's last release may have been three years ago but they've been busy. The boys took a break from the recording of Invented to commemorate the ten year anniversary of their influential album, Clarity, with a national tour.

On 180 gram vinyl! This eight-song album is a collaboration between the acclaimed rock icon Neil Young and musician, songwriter, and producer Daniel Lanois - known for his work with U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, The Neville Brothers and many others. Young and Lanois have crossed paths musically over the course of many years, including Lanois' performances at Young's Bridge School Benefit Concert and Young's performance at Farm Aid when Lanois was Willie Nelson's music director, but this is the first time the two have recorded together. Recorded in Lanois' home in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, Le Noise features Young on acoustic and electric guitars with Lanois adding his trademark sonic textures, creating one of the most sonically arresting albums Young has ever recorded. No band, no overdubs, just "a man on a stool and me doing a nice job on the recording," as Lanois puts it. "Neil was so appreciative of the sonics that we presented to him," Lanois says. "He walked in the door and I put an acoustic guitar into his hands - one that I had been working on to build a new sound. That's the multi-layered acoustic sound that you hear on the songs 'Love and War' and 'Peaceful Valley Boulevard.' I wanted him to understand that I've spent years dedicated to the sonics in my home and that I wanted to give him something he'd never heard before. He picked up that instrument, which had everything - an acoustic sound, electronica, bass sounds - and he knew as soon as he played it that we had taken the acoustic guitar to a new level. It's hard to come up with a new sound at the back end of fifty years of rock and roll, but I think we did it."

Fresh off the Frosting on the Beater full-album shows and their work with Big Star, The Posies chart unforeseen territory on Blood/Candy while holding onto their well known signature sound. The almost entirely self produced record boasts melodic hooks, provocative lyrics, and intricate layers of instrumentation that blend far-out, spacey sounds with sophisticated hues. The bulk of the album was recorded and mixed in Spain and their hometown of Seattle, with stops in Ecuador, Canada, Paris and Los Angeles. "After the eclecticism of our last album, Every Kind of Light, we thought it would be a good idea to make a kind of classic, back to our roots album, guitar pop with lots of harmonies, etc. We didn't end up doing that - however, what stands in place of that, is an album even more adventurous, more playful, and more heartfelt than I think we've ever done. If I had to pick one album for us to be remembered by and delete all the others, no doubt that I would choose this one," says co-founder Ken Stringfellow. Jon Auer, also original co-founder, adds, "With Blood/Candy, we definitely sound like us, but some of these songs are completely from an alternate Posies' universe. We subscribe to the 'evolve or perish' philosophy. We directed ourselves to new places with this recording and tried not to travel down familiar paths when it could be avoided. Expect the unexpected." Since the band's inception in the late 80s in Seattle, The Posies - known for their cross-pollination of pop and rock - have maintained a consistent career throughout the years. Noted for hits like "Golden Blunders," recorded by Ringo Starr in 1992, along with "Dream All Day," "Solar Sister" and "Flavor of the Month" from their pivotal release Frosting on the Beater, the group has developed a massive cult following and critical acclaim.

SODOM – ‘IN WAR AND PIECES’ COVER ART

Sodom‘s new album, 'In War And Pieces' will be released via SPV/Steamhammer on November 23rd. It was produced by Grip Inc. guitarist Wade Sorychta. The cover art was done by Eliran Kantor, who is responsible for great cover art such as Testament‘s The Formation Of Damnation as well as album covers for recent releases by The Crinn (Dreaming Saturn), Gwar (Lust In Space) and Anacrusis‘ re-recordings called Hindsight: Suffering Hour And Reason Revisited.

New Senses Fail – The Fire Video Stream, Cover Art

Senses Fail is ready to unleash their new effort (their fourth studio release)'The Fire' on October 26. 'The Fire' will be the first album with guitarist Zack Roach, who replaced Heath Saraceno. As Senses Fail is known for its strong riffing and solos, this may have a noticeable effect, although, “The Fire” and “Saint Anthony” both sound like classic Senses Fail.

Singer Buddy Nielsen has said The Fire will be a passionate, creative album.

The Fire “is a reaction and a release of a whirlwind of emotions that came from fighting for what we love and dealing with change and growth both personally and creatively,” Nielsen said.

Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper Nominated For Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Bon Jovi and Alice Cooper have been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Donovan, Neil Diamond and Dr John are among the other first-timers in contention for the prestigious roll of honor. Previous nominees LL Cool J, Donna Summer, Tom Waits and The Beastie Boys are also up for induction next year. Acts become eligible for inclusion to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twenty-five years after the release of their first recording.

The final list of inductees will be announced in December, while the ceremony is scheduled to take place in New York next year.

Five of the fifteen artists will be inducted based on the votes of over 500 industry members over the next couple of months. The announcement will be made later in the year.

You can't please them all......but you would think there could be a better way to get nominated and included than the way they do it now....

ALICE COOPER Comments On Nomination For ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME Induction:
Old-school shock-rocker Alice Cooper has released the following statement in response to the announcement that he and his band are among 15 artists who were nominated for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2011:

"On behalf of Dennis (Dunaway), Neal (Smith), Michael (Bruce) and the late great Glen (Buxton), we are honored to be nominated for induction in to the Hall. Anytime you are nominated in your chosen profession, it's definitely a compliment to be recognized.

"It's hard to fathom possibly being in the same club as artists who inspired us originally, like THE BEATLES, THE [ROLLING] STONES, THE BEACH BOYS, THE WHO, THE YARDBIRDS, and Chuck Berry, and to be nominated the same year as legendary artists like my personal favorite songwriter of all time, Laura Nyro, as well as Donovan, who sang on our 'Billion Dollar Babies' record, and our good friends in Bon Jovi, is a great feeling.

"Five guys starting a band, just hoping to meet girls and drink free beer, rehearsing and playing local bars five hours a night for the first few years — that was us. We came up with the theatrics and made every effort not to sacrifice the music one bit; we thought it was like our job to bring theatrics to rock 'n' roll. And then, amazingly enough, we were having a bunch of massive hit records which was proof that theatricality and rock 'n' roll could, in fact, be joined successfully. They Are Missed:

In 1968, American radio DJ Dewey Phillips died of heart failure (age 42). He was one of rock 'n' roll's pioneering disk jockeys. In July 1954, he was the first DJ to play the young Elvis Presley's debut record, "That's All Right/Blue Moon Of Kentucky."

Born on this day in 1902, Ed Sullivan, TV host, The Ed Sullivan Singers and Orchestra. Introduced The Beatles and other UK acts to America via his Ed Sullivan TV show (see below). The Beatles appearance on February 9th 1964 is considered a milestone in American pop culture; the broadcast drew an estimated 73 million viewers. Sullivan died on October 13, 1974.

Jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis died of a stroke and pneumonia in 1991. His 1959 album 'Kind of Blue,' is a major influence on jazz music. Davis is considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.

Adam Goldstein (DJ AM.), club DJ and musician, died of an accidental drug overdose at home in New York City in 2009 (age 36). Had worked with Blink 182, Crazy Town, Madonna. Goldstein had surrived a plane crash along with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker in September 2008.

Lucy Vodden, the woman who inspired the Beatles' ‘67 classic "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," died in 2009 after a long battle with lupus. Vodden, 46, was a nursery-school classmate of John Lennon's eldest son, Julian. One day, Julian brought home a drawing he made of her and showed it to his father, saying it was a picture of his friend "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds." O'Donnell, in a BBC radio interview in 2007, said, "I remember Julian and I both doing pictures on a double-sided easel, throwing paint at each other, much to the horror of the classroom attendant... Julian had painted a picture and on that particular day his father turned up with the chauffeur to pick him up from school."







History:

"To Know Him Is To Love Him" by the Teddy Bears was released in 1958. The song was written and composed by 18-year old Phil Spector.

The Beatles performed a lunchtime show at the Cavern Club, Liverpool in 1962. That night they performed aboard the vessel MV Royal Iris on the River Mersey. The Beatles' third and final "Riverboat Shuffle".

In 1963 - "She Loves You" by the Beatles was played on the radio by Murry The K (often referred to as the fifth Beatle) in New York. It is believed that this was the first time a Beatles song was played in the US and certainly changed the music world as we knew it (for the better, I may add).



"The Freewheelin` Bob Dylan," his second album, was released in 1963.

Connie Steven's TV show called "Wendy And Me" (with George Burns), premiered in 1964 (it lasted just the one season).

The Beatles started a nine week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1968 with "Hey Jude." The Paul McCartney song written about Lennon's son Julian gave the group their 16th US #1 and the biggest selling single of 1968.

The Rascals went to #1 on the US album chart in 1968 with 'Time Peace / The Rascals' Greatest Hits.' Also, Moody Blues "Days Of Future Past" hits the album chart.

Bruce Springsteen and a local folk rock group The Founders appeared at the Off Broad Street Coffee House in Red Bank, New Jersey in 1968.

John Lennon recorded his blistering and confessional cut "Cold Turkey" in 1969. He had a pretty impressive backing band - guitarist Eric Clapton, fellow Beatle Ringo Starr on drums and Manfred Mann bassist (and friend from The Beatles Hamburg days) Klaus Voorman. Yoko is in there as well. Lennon originally presented the song his fellow Beatles for inclusion on 'Abbey Road' but they passed on it.

Eric Burdon provides the talking/singing ad-libs and War serves up the groove for "Spill The Wine." It went gold in 1970.



David Bowie sold out New York's Carnegie Hall in 1972. It was his first sell out in the US.

The Rolling Stones appeared on US television for the first time in six years when they played on ABC-TV's "In Concert" in 1973.

Bad Company went to #1 on the US album chart in 1974 with their self-titled debut album. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke had come out of Free, while Mick Ralphs had played guitar with Mott the Hoople and Boz Burrell was bass player for King Crimson before the group formed in 1973. They produced six albums together before disbanding in 1983.

Canadian singer Andy Kim went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1974 with "Rock Me Gently," ( Kim was also the co-writer of The Archies "Sugar Sugar").

Jerry Garcia and Friends and Jefferson Starship gave a free show to 40,000 fans in San Francisco's Lindley Park in 1975.

In 1976, A&M Records sued George Harrison for $6 million over non-delivery of a new album ('33 1/3' )after he missed the deadline by two months.

David Bowie taped a duet with Bing Crosby for Crosby’s Christmas special in 1977. Using the term “duet” may be a little misleading as Bowie and Crosby sing “Little Drummer Boy” and “Peace On Earth” separately-simultaneously.

In 1987, U2 played the first of two nights at Madison Square Garden in New York City during their Joshua Tree world tour.

Gladys Knight and Smokey Robinson were guests on the television show "$10,000 Pyramid" in 1987.

"Tales From Margaritaville" (go figure) was published by Jimmy Buffet in 1989. It was a book of short stories.

In 1991, Garth Brooks went to #1 on the US album chart with 'Ropin' The Wind.' The album spent a total of eighteen weeks at the #1 position and 70 weeks on the chart, selling over 11m copies. It was also the first country album to debut at #1 on the Billboard pop chart.

In 1991, Guns N' Roses released 2 albums 'Use Your Illusion I' and 'Use Your Illusion II' which debut at number 1 and number 2 on the UK album chart. Both albums make #1 & #2 in the US as well.

On the week of their album ‘Nevermind’ being released, Nirvana made an appearance at the Tower Records store in New York City in 1991 and then played a show at The Marquee Club in New York. Their anthem, "Smell’s Like Teen Spirit," had also entered the US Top 20 this week.

LeAnn Rimes went to #1 on the US album chart in 1997 with 'You Light Up My Life - Inspirational Songs.'

In 2001, Courtney Love filed a claim against Geffen Records and two musicians from her late husband's band, Nirvana. The suit was aimed at invalidating a 1997 agreement over the group's body of work. Love claimed that she signed the deal while she was distressed. (she means stoned, I think...)

In 2002, Madonna was voted the greatest female singer of all-time by 75,0000 music fans in a VH1 poll. But critics and music fans were unhappy with the position of Kylie Minogue who was voted into second place beating Diana Ross, (12th) and Annie Lennox, (14th).

Tina Turner's hometown, made famous in her song "Nutbush City Limits," named a stretch of State Highway 19 the ‘Tina Turner Highway' in 2002. Turner lived in Nutbush, a small town about 50 miles northeast of Memphis, until she was 17.

John Mayer was at #1 on the US album chart in 2003 with ‘Heavier Things.’

In 2004, producer Phil Spector was charged with the murder of actress Lana Clarkson in an unsealed indictment. Spector was in attendance at a Los Angeles court as the indictment about the slaying of 40-year-old Clarkson was read. He remained free on $1 million bail.

In Beverly Hills, CA, a tribute concert to honor Ray Charles in 2004 raised $15 million for Morehouse College Center for the Arts in Atlanta. The performers included Bill Cosby as the host, Stevie Wonder, Travis Tritt, Michael McDonald (Doobie Brothers), James Ingram and Patti Austin. They sang Charles' hits, such as "Georgia On My Mind," "What I'd Say" and "Hit the Road Jack." Charles had died of acute liver disease on June 10, 2004.

Cream`s "Disraeli Gears," which features “Sunshine of Your Love,” “Strange Brew,” and “Tales of Brave Ulysses” was reissued as a two-CD package in 2004. This deluxe edition contains a 24-page booklet, demos, songs that didn`t make the album and live BBC performances. The original album was released in `67.



In 2004, Mick Fleetwood issued his third solo album, “Something Big,” with guest appearances by Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie and former Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer.

In 2005, PBS ran a documentary called 'Get Up, Stand Up: The Story of Pop and Protest.' Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, the Beastie Boys, Rage Against The Machine and U2 are among the artists who appear as the film explored the use of popular music as an instrument for political change.

Also in 2005, Disturbed's third album, "Ten Thousand Fists," tops the Billboard 200 chart after selling 238,000 copies during its first week of release. Bon Jovi's "Have a Nice Day" lands at #2 with 202,000 units sold.

Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello was one of 400 people arrested in 2006 for unlawful assembly, blocking the main entrance road to the Los Angeles International Airport. The protest takes place during a march to raise awareness about the rights of immigrant hotel workers. "This [historically] is how things have changed . . . by people on the lower rungs of society standing up," says Morello. He was released from police custody the next morning. Right on...!

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed on NBC's Today Show in 2007 to promote their 'Magic album.

In 2007, The John Lennon Northern Lights Festival was held in Durness, Scotland, the most northwesterly and remote village on mainland Britain. Lennon spent his childhood holidays between the ages of nine and 13 in the village and returned with his son Julian, Yoko Ono and her daughter Kyoko in 1969.

Also in 2007, an ad for P Diddy's Unforgivable Woman perfume range, featuring a lingerie-clad model cavorting with the rapper in a New York hotel stairwell, was shown on Channel 4 in the UK. The ad had been banned in the US by the Federal Communications Commission, for being too sexually explicit for US audiences.

Neil Young’s “Le Noise” is released in 2010. Young and producer Daniel Lanois recorded the album in an L.A. mansion earlier in the year. "We cut a couple of solo acoustic songs, but the rest is very electric," says Lanois "There's no band, but I got in there with my sonics. There's nothing else out there like it."

The Memphis Jukebox Two

Vee-Tone Records and Elvis Unlimited team up with HMV to bring a piece of Rock‘n’Roll memorabilia to London – for one day only on Thursday, 28th October – to support the CD launch of The Memphis Jukebox Two (released 18th October)

To coincide with the release of Volume 2 of The Memphis Jukebox, Vee-Tone Records have teamed up with Elvis Unlimited and HMV to bring a piece of Rock ’n’ Roll history to the UK. On 28th October, Vee-Tone Records will be in HMV’s flagship Oxford Circus store (150 Oxford Street, London) accompanied by Henrik Knudsen of Elvis Unlimited, the new owner of the original Elvis jukebox collection. Vee-Tone Records and Elvis Unlimited will have on display over 40 original singles from Elvis’ jukebox as well as other memorabilia once owned by ‘The King’. Appropriately, Elvis used to release his early recordings in the UK on the HMV label.

For almost twenty years, the King of Rock ’n’ Roll would relax at his Graceland home by listening to his personal jukebox filled with the records he had amassed over many years. These were the songs he loved and the music that inspired him – the tunes that made him ‘shake, rattle and roll’.

And now over forty of these 45 rpm vinyl singles – by artists ranging from Gene Vincent to Carl Perkins, Bo Diddley to Ray Charles and from Little Richard to James Brown, will go on display to the public for one day only along with other items of Elvis memorabilia on October 28th at HMV’s Oxford Circus flagship store, 150 Oxford Street, London W1.

In attendance and to meet fellow Elvis fans will be the new owner of the collection, Henrik Knudsen of Elvis Unlimited as well as Megan M. Murphy of Record Collector magazine, whose article ‘secrets of the King’s jukebox’ has generated huge interest among fans.

There is no doubt that Elvis was one of the most influential recording artists of the 20th Century. He dared to blend African-American influenced Blues with Gospel, Bluegrass and Country. This unique sound became Rock ’n’ Roll, and those influences can still be heard across many music genres today. Fast-forward to today, thirty-three years after his death, and there is still a fascination with Elvis Presley and his legacy that no other artist can match.

Whilst there have been many releases over the years that have claimed to feature the music that inspired Elvis, there has never been a verifiable album that truly showcases the actual recordings and artists that influenced and entertained him, both in his formative years and at the height of his fame. Until now, that is.

It has long been known that Elvis, an avid music collector, kept a personal jukebox at Graceland. The whereabouts of these 45’s had always eluded memorabilia investigators, but in October 2009 the mystery was solved when they were put up for auction. And now Vee-Tone Records – an independent UK music label, has just released two volumes of music based on this very collection of singles: The Memphis Jukebox (Volumes One and Two).

Mushroomhead Set To Release New Album On September 28

Explosive Cleveland, OH art-metal collective Mushroomhead has finished work on its new video for the first single "Come On." The high energy clip – taken from the band’s forthcoming release Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children - was directed by "House" of Precinct 13 and features "fight club" type scenes and bloody combat shot with stylish cinematography. House previously directed the band's 2007 video for "1200", which netted the band MTV Headbangers Ball "Video of the Year."

"Conceptually, it's about having the opportunity to vent your rage," says Mushroomhead's Skinny. "The song 'Come On' is a sucker punch and it's a metaphor for everything that's gone wrong. Costello Goes Really Retro With 78 Vinyl Release

Elvis Costello's forthcoming album, “National Ransom,” mines a century’s worth of pop music history in both the characters, scenarios and themes in his songs, and in the atmospheric sound that producer T Bone Burnett has given the record.

So it makes perfect sense that Costello, a voracious fan of music of all styles, would want to add a vintage touch of some kind in conjunction with the album’s release come Nov. 2.

Vinyl LP version? Everyone’s doing that nowadays, so Costello is going one step beyond: He’s releasing four songs on a pair of 78 rpm discs.

A whimsical announcement about the 78s has been posted on Costello’s website, sounding much like the fancifully stylized introductions he gives his musical guests on the Sundance Channel “Spectacle” show:

“Lupe-O-Tone -- Purveyors of fine flat phonograph records & cylinders since 1913. Our motto is ‘Ego sum satus infremo.’ Lupe-O-Tone present 78 rpm discs in full Lycanthropic Sound. …‘A Slow Dance With Josephine’ b/w ‘You Hung the Moon’ and ‘Jimmie Standing in the Rain’ b/w ‘A Voice in the Dark,’ by the Lupotonians with vocal refrain by Elvis Costello.”

Nick Rhodes and Mark Ronson's New Track Will Only Be Available for One Day

In a Twitter post, Ronson revealed that his new track with the Duran Duran star will only be available from one British record store on Monday, September 27.

A new track written and recorded by Duran Duran star Nick Rhodes and DJ/producer Mark Ronson is set to become one of the most exclusive ever - it will only be available from one British record store on Monday, September 27.

Rise Records in Bristol, England will only be allowed to sell "Sound of Plastic" during Ronson's pre-gig takeover of the store.  In a tweet to fans on Sunday, September 26, Ronson writes, "tomorrow Kyle, Spank Rock, Alex Greenwald, Zender, MNDR, Rose & myself are taking over Rise Records in Bristol @ 5pm. Then gig @ the Academy (sic)."

"We also made an xclusive 12" (inch vinyl record) with Nick Rhodes & Jamie Klaxons which is only available in Rise Records on that day (sic)."

Congo Square Project releases third album

Monkey Killer Records Announces Operation Rolling Thunder’s Debut Album

Monkey Killer Records is very proud to announce the release of Dunedin band Operation Rolling Thunder’s debut album, III. Since their inception many years ago, Operation Rolling Thunder have been in the habit of doing things unconventionally; their live sets rarely break the thirty minute mark, they eschew bass in favour of a tight two piece format, and they utilise a sampler in lieu of vocals. Now their debut album is released on vinyl with download three years after it was recorded.

Operation Rolling Thunder’s debut album has had an extended gestation period, having been recorded in 2007 at the Masonic Lodge in Port Chalmers by Dale Cotton (who has recorded High Dependency Unit, Mestar, Collapsing Cities and many more). The record was mastered for vinyl in January 2010, and pressed in the USA, finally ready for release in September 2010.

The album is available now directly through the Monkey Killer Records website, and will be available through selected stores New Zealand wide over the coming weeks.

Brokencyde detail second album, give middle finger to industry

Brokencyde have detailed their upcoming second album, Will Never Die. The album is due out November 9, 2010. The band made the following statement about the album:

Social Distortion confirm new album release date

According to the latest issue of Rolling Stone, Social Distortion is scheduled to release their Epitaph Records debut, 'Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes' on November 23, 2010.

The album will be their first since 'Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll,' which was released in 2004. The band released a Greatest Hits album in 2007 and will be touring next month.

RONNIE JAMES DIO Statue To Be Erected In Kavarna

Newly created plaster model of Ronnie James Dio statue

Legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio will have a monument dedicated to him in the Bulgarian Black-sea coastal town of Kavarna. The statue will be placed in the city's central park, as part of the soon-to-be built "Walk of Rock," a project approved by the City Council four years ago.

According to Radio Bulgaria, the decision to erect the monument was taken by the municipal administration, with the most active proponents being Kavarna Mayor Tzonko Tzonev as well as leading journalists, musicians and singers.

A replica of the monument was displayed during the three-day Kavarna Rock Fest in July and a plaster model of the statue has since been created, marking the final stage of the preparation for its construction.

The actual statue will be 1.5 meters in height (approximately four feet and eleven inches) and will be combined with large stones taken from the sea.

The artists behind the project are sculptors Alexander Petrov and Krasimir Krastev - Lomsky, while the painting is being handled by Ivan Stratiev.

Dio was reportedly one of the very first heavy rock icons to play Kavarna. In fact, he performed in Bulgaria no less than five times and took an active part in the campaign for liberating the Bulgarian nurses held in prison in Libya for eight years.

According to Standart News, the mayor of Kavarna, Tzonko Tzonev, has managed to turn his life-long hobby — rock music — into a successful and profitable project and thus pours funds into the treasury of Kavarna Municipality. Thanks to Tzonev's efforts, some of the greatest rock musicians of all time have come and performed in the small coastal town of Kavarna.

Ronnie James Dio was one of rock's most respected and talented frontmen, renowned for his instantly recognizable vocals, lyrics and stagecraft. On May 16, 2010, Ronnie succumbed to stomach cancer at the age of 67 and the world of hard rock lost one of its greatest talents.

Ozzy Osbourne told QMI Agency in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on in May that Ronnie James Dio's ultimately fatal battle with stomach cancer hit close to home.

"As soon as I heard I heard he had been diagnosed with cancer, I sent him some encouragement," Osbourne said. "Having been through that situation myself with (my wife) Sharon when we were doing (the reality TV show) 'The Osbournes', it's always somebody over there. When it lands at your doorstep you're like, 'What do you do? How do you get round this?' When Sharon got (colon) cancer, I'd never known anyone who survived. I thought it was bullshit when they told you, 'They can survive.' I just thought they were trying to smooth me over. And she got over it."

Osbourne added that he ran into BLACK SABBATH/HEAVEN & HELL drummer Vinny Appice at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards show in early April and inquired about Dio's health.

"I didn't get a chance to see him but I was talking to the drummer Vinny, and I said, 'Did he get my message?' 'I don't know,' he said.' And I said, 'Well, tell him to keep up the fight.' Then on the weekend, we heard he had passed away, which is sad. He had a great voice. People thought that me and him were at war. At first, I suppose a bit of theatrics would be involved, but I mean it's been 30 years."

The deaths of Dio and SLIPKNOT bassist Paul Gray are the latest that have stunned the heavy rock world in the last few months. AVENGED SEVENFOLD drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan died last December, while TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele passed away in April.

Ozzy, who knew or had a passing acquaintance with all four artists, told The Pulse of Radio it's sad to see so many musicians pass away in such a short period of time. "I mean, of late everyone's dropping dead," he said. "This happens every so often, you know. I'm only hoping my number don't come up soon. It's what happens, you know. You hear me talking, I'm lucky I'm not one of the dead ones, 'cause I used to — I mean, Ronnie James Dio didn't have any problems, but when there's drugs involved or alcohol...I should have died a thousand times."

Underoath reveal album cover, tracklisting for new album

Susan Boyle Number One In America

SuBo’s album tops chart more than a month before it’s released...
Susan Boyle’s forthcoming album has already topped the US charts six weeks before its official release.

'The Gift' is number one on Amazon’s US music chart on pre-orders alone – just one day after being made available to order. Boyle's album topped the chart ahead of new releases from Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Neil Young and Taylor Swift.

Amazon declared this “the season of Susan” and said the interest in the Britain’s Got Talent sensation was unprecedented. "She has done phenomenally well going to the top of the chart in the US based on one day of pre-orders alone and she's racing up the charts in the UK as well,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “She has really captured the hearts of the nation, both here and in the States."

SuBo’s debut, I Dreamed A Dream, broke records back in 2009 to become the largest global CD pre-order in history; it went on to sell nine million copies and was the biggest selling album of that year. Judging by the buzz around the singer’s new release, she may just top that.

Texas State University Receives Gift of Large Willie Nelson Collection

John Kalinsky, a long time collector of Willie Nelson memorabilia, has donated his collection to the Wittliff Collections at the Texas State University's Alkek Library.

Included in the collection are 877 recordings (45s, LPs, cassettes, VHSs, CDs, DVDs) covering not only Nelson's performing career, but also his work as a producer, guest musician and songwriter. The collection spans the years 1954 to 2010 and includes two 45s released in 1954 by Dave Isbel which includes Willie on guitar. Also donated was Nelson's own first single, No Place For Me/Lumberjack, recorded in Vancouver, WA when the singers was still working as a DJ.

Wittliff was already had a major collection of Nelson's work, including hand-written lyrics, screenplays, letters, posters and other memorabilia. The Kalinsky collection makes the library the primary repository in the world of Nelson material.

Florence + the Machine is set to release 'Heavy In Your Arms' on November 15.  The single is taken from Between Two Lungs, A two disc special edition of album Lungs to be released on the same day

To round off yet another exceptional year, Florence will be releasing the mighty single 'Heavy In Your Arms' on November 15th through Island Records. Produced by Paul Epworth the track, a favourite of recent festival headlining live sets, was recorded for the Twilight Eclipse film.

Florence comments, 'Heavy In Your Arms I suppose is about the weight of love, and how sometimes it can be a burden between two people. I felt a strong theme in the Twilight series was someone being rescued or being condemned, and is the love you carry bringing you down. I recorded it with Paul one evening, using a lot of strange reversed vocal samples and big hip hop piano. It's basically inspired by 90's hip hop, and gospel choirs, like most of my songs.'

Katy Perry Mocks Sesame Street Boobs Saga On Saturday Night Live
In revealling Elmo shirt...

Katy Perry poked fun at the controversy over her axed Sesame Street cameo as she appeared on Saturday Night Live (SNL) last night (September 25). Last week, producers from Sesame Street were forced to axe the singer’s skit with Elmo on the children’s TV show after parents complained that her outfit was to revealing.

Appearing on the set of Bronx Beat on SNL, Perry sported a revealing t-shirt emblazoned with Elmo’s face. The singer, who was playing a 16-year-old library volunteer, bounced up and down as she responded to questions. This breaks me up!

‘You don’t have the American version, the one with the extra track, from 1971, do you?” asked the burly middle-aged bloke in what might once have been a Rolling Stones T-shirt.

All around him, knowledgeable collectors of vinyl – men of a certain age, generally – were having roughly the same conversation with equally knowledgeable dealers.

This was the exhibition hall at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall yesterday as the latest Music Fair began its weekend residency. At one point, a man walked in with a rolled-up array of original Beatles posters. Nearby, people were wondering whether to spend £110 on a Japanese-issue, red vinyl, mono copy of the early Beatles album, With The Beatles, or £80 on a framed HMV presentation marking one million UK sales of Dido’s album, No Angel. Bootleg recordings of live concerts by everyone from Bob Dylan to the Rolling Stones were also attracting interest.

The fair, which continues today, is part of a network of such events across the UK, and the organisers view them as the future of music shopping.

The collectors are in good company. According to the Official Charts Company and the BPI, the voice of the UK recorded music business, vinyl sales increased by 5% last year, although they still account for a mere sliver of the overall market. Vinyl album sales stood at 219,449, just 0.2% of the market, while seven-inch singles, at 222,193, represented just 0.1%. Some 112.9 million physical albums were sold in 2009, as opposed to 16.1m digital albums. Digital, however, has had an increasingly substantial impact on singles sales. In 2009 there were 149.7m download sales, compared with a mere 3.1m physical sales.

“Vinyl is definitely thriving,” said John Wallace, manager at the organiser, Leicester-based VIP Events. “People are back out there, collecting it. It’s the younger generation that downloads, because they don’t know anything else.”

Despite shifting trends in music, vintage artists who all embarked on their careers in the 1960s remain the most sought-after. “The ones who always stand out are Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Bob Dylan,” adds Wallace, himself a collector of soul records, “though there will be odd new records by certain other artists which might fetch some money. We’ve also noticed that coloured vinyl seven-inch singles are being snapped up.”

Certain items are so rare that, if found in mint condition, could command respectable sums from collectors.

“The Beatles released a single, Please Please Me, in 1963. The first 50 copies or so came out with gold lettering on the black ‘Parlophone’ disc label, on both the mono and stereo versions. If you get a stereo version with the gold lettering, you could be talking about £3000 or £4000. If it’s the mono version, you might get about £300 or £400 for it.”

Edinburgh-based dealer George Robertson, who specialises in blues, jazz and 1960s psychedelia vinyl, said: “There was a downturn in vinyl through the 1990s but there has been an upsurge over the last five years. A lot of people swear by vinyl’s sound, and then there’s the importance of physically owning an artefact from the period in which it was manufactured: it is not like buying a remastered CD.”

Robertson, who is planning to open a music-and-art shop in Stockbridge in the New Year, observes that the internet has impacted on dealers’ ability to acquire fresh stock.

“One of the issues is that people who used to come to fairs to sell stuff to dealers are now selling it themselves on the internet, and getting better prices than if they sold it to dealers. The middleman has gone,” he said.

Robertson concedes that music fairs are even bigger business on the Continent. “The main fairs, in places such as Utrecht, Milan and Barcelona, are big tourist draws. They’re often sponsored by local authorities and can attract between 25,000 or 30,000 people.”

The Glasgow fair is small by comparison but no-one was complaining, least of all the man in the Stones T-shirt, who found what he was after.

In 1956, fourteen year-old Tammy Wynette watched the King perform from the front row as "Elvis Presley Day" was celebrated at the Missippi-Alabama Dairy Fair in his home town of Tupelo, Mississippi (where he himself had sung at age ten).

The Monotones recorded "Book Of Love" in 1957.

The musical "West Side Story" opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1957.

In 2007, a charitable foundation set up by Shakira donated $40 million to help victims of natural disasters. The money would go towards repairing damage caused by an earthquake in Peru and a hurricane in Nicaragua.
