Criminal Records owner plans November close

Five years ago, Criminal Records celebrated its 15th anniversary with an in-store party complete with actor-comedians Patton Oswalt and Zack Galifianakis and Athens-based bands Of Montreal and Elf Power.

For its 20th anniversary, the Little Five Points institution known for its new and used CDs, vinyl records, comic books and graphic novels will close its doors unless new investors step in.

“We’ve been underwater ever since the economy became distressed,” founder and owner Eric Levin said Monday. “We’ve been on a rescue mission for three years. I’m done paying for it by myself.”

Peaceville Records has announced the following update about re-releasing the "Black Thrash Attack" album from Aura Noir:

Norway’s Aura Noir was formed in 1993 by Aggressor & Apollyon in pursuit of a more thrash-based form of black metal than much of what was coming out at the time - particularly in their homeland - citing bands such as Slayer, Sodom & Kreator as inspirations along with purveyors of the scene such as Venom, for a dirtier, stripped down, violent black/thrash metal sound. Their first official release was the ‘Dreams Like Deserts’ EP on Hot Records in 1994, and from there-on the band has become a cult act.

‘Black Thrash Attack’ was Aura Noir’s debut full length album, originally recorded & released in 1996, & was a continuation of the intense thrash riffing displayed on ‘Dreams Like Deserts’. Mixing Completed on Van Halen Album, Mastering Up Next

Good news regarding Van Halen’s upcoming album – as of a little over three weeks ago, the band has finished mixing the album. The rumor that the mixing process was taking overly long isn’t true, as the mixing began in July and was finished in August.

The album is to be mastered in mid-September. This process should only take around a weeks time, so the album should be 100% completed sometime this month! There is still no word on a definite release date.

The Flexi-Disc is used for the first time by Nestles Chocolate in 1967.

In 1961, Bob Dylan debuted at the Gaslight Cafe in New York City.

In 1968, working at Abbey Road studio’s in London, The Beatles recorded overdubs onto the new George Harrison song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Eric Clapton added the guitar solo and became the first outside musician to play on a Beatles recording. George Harrison later said that Clapton's presence had another effect on the band: "It made them all try a bit harder; they were all on their best behavior."

In 1969, Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" peaked at #7 on the Billboard singles chart. Departing from his usual high pitched, nasal style, Dylan's low-key vocal also pushed the song to #5 in the UK.

The record gained three Grammy nominations and was the Country Music Association's Song of the Year for 1976. In the UK, it reached #4. Glen had cracked the US top ten twice before with "Wichita Lineman" in 1968 and "Galveston" in 1969.

Record producer Tom Wilson died in 1978. He worked with various US acts including Bob Dylan, (The Times They Are a-Changin', Another Side of Bob Dylan, and Bringing It All Back Home), Frank Zappa, (Freak Out!), Simon and Garfunkel (Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.) and The Velvet Underground (White Light/White Heat).

In 1989, the Pittsburgh Steelers were banned from practicing on their own field, Three Rivers Stadium, because The Rolling Stones were rehearsing for their upcoming concert.

Also in 1989, Neil Young's "This Note's For You" was named Best Video of the Year at the sixth annual MTV Rock Video Awards. The video had been initially banned by the music video station because it mentioned corporate sponsors by name.

In 1990, Tom Fogerty, guitarist with Creedence Clearwater Revival, died at age 49, due to complications from AIDS acquired during a blood transfusion.

In 1993, a benefit for Walden Woods was held in Boston with Don Henley, Elton John, Jimmy Buffett, Sting and Aerosmith.

In 1994, English keyboard player Nicky Hopkins died at age 50, in Nashville, Tennessee, of complications from intestinal surgery. He was a highly respected session musician and worked with The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, The Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, George Harrison and the Jerry Garcia Band.

In 1997, while an estimated 2.5 billion people watched on television, Elton John sings a re-worked version of "Candle In The Wind" at the funeral of England's Princess Diana. After the song is re-recorded and released as a single, it would become the largest selling record in history.

In 2001, Earth, Wind and Fire announced that Viagra would sponsor their forthcoming 30th anniversary American tour. cool

In 2008, members of the band Great White agreed to pay the survivors and the families of victims of the The Station night club fire $1 million.

In 2010, John Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman, was once again denied parole, nearly 30 years after gunning down the former Beatle outside New York City's Dakota apartment building. The literalism of album artwork in Egypt

It happens with such regularity, you’d think there was a law mandating it: Any Egyptian musician releasing a record will, regardless of their age, gender, or chosen genre, limit their album’s representative

artwork to an image of themselves, either smiling (if it’s an album of love songs) or doing their best to look pensive (if it’s an album of break-up songs).

For as long as anyone can seem to remember, Egyptian album covers have given music buyers some of the laziest graphic design work known to man, and, contrary to reason, advancements in technology
have brought little improvement.

Typically, close-ups of the artist's’ face are the simplest, and safest bet. Full body shots are riskier as they come with the added hassle of context. Frequently, designers will buckle under this kind of pressure, leading to bizarre results. What should the artist be doing on his or her album cover? Disturbingly, the most common answer seems to be: straddling something. It doesn’t matter what - it could be a bicycle, a horse, or a fence. The second go-to for most - superimposing the artist over a hazy, multicolored cloud, unintentionally making them look like the sole survivor of a nuclear holocaust - isn’t much better

Randy Bachman and Fred Turner are rollin' down the Canadian highway again.

A year after reteaming for their first album in more than 20 years, the Can-Rock titans are gearing up to continue their comeback with a coast-to-coast tour. But anyone who thinks the duo have mellowed with age is in for a rude surprise, according to Bachman.

"We've got a rock 'n' roll truck and we're driving over your face," laughs the 67-year-old singer-guitarist during a rare pit stop at his B.C. home. "We're not doing dance music or Lady Gaga stuff. It's 90 minutes of full-on rock -- the same Bachman and Turner songs you know."

Laurie McAllister of the Runaways Passes Away at 53

Laurie McAllister, the last bass player for the Runaways, passed away on August 25 in Eugene, OR due to complications of asthma. She was 53.

McAllister was part of the L.A. punk scene, playing with Baby Roulette and the Rave Ons who had a song on one of Kim Fowley's (manager of the Runaways) compilations. A neighbor, Duane Hitchings who played keyboards on the album And Now...The Runaways, talked her up to the band when bass player Vicki Blue left the group due to illness.

Dave Navarro joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1993.

In 2008, a study of more than 36,000 people from around the world concluded that musical tastes and personality type were closely related. The research, which was carried out by Professor Adrian North of

Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, in the U.K., suggested classical music fans were shy, while heavy metal fans were gentle and at ease with themselves. Fans of indie music had low self-esteem and were

Buddy Miles (Electric Flag, Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys) died in 2008.

In 2009, Mickey Jones, the original bassist and founding member of the '70s Rock band Angel, passed away after a long battle with liver cancer. He was 57.

Metallica, Lou Reed Collaboration Album Cover Art Unveiled

The cover art for 'Lulu,' the forthcoming album from Metallica and Lou Reed has just been revealed.

Lou Reed describes Lulu as: "a set of extended songs inspired by German expressionist Frank Wedekind's early 20th century plays Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box (much admired by Freud). The plays, originally published in 1904 and set in Germany, Paris and London in the 1890s, whirl between the points of view of Lulu, an inverted-Eve-like cipher-mirror of desire and abuse, and the people who fall desperately in love with her. Then she meets Jack The Ripper..."

Lulu is scheduled for release on November 1st via Warner Bros.

Judas Priest Have 12-14 Songs Ready For 2012 Album

It's being reported that Judas Priest have finished recorded a third of their new album, with up to 14 songs being ready for a 2012 release. Frontman Rob Halford had this to say about the upcoming schedule:

"[We] began writing new music early on this year, before we went out on the road," Halford told Billboard magazine. "We have about 12 or 14 tracks completely mapped out, four of which have been recorded and mixed and are ready to go... so the good news is that there will be a brand new PRIEST record next year."

He continued: "I think it's fair to say that this is going to be just another great, traditional British heavy metal album from PRIEST with what you love about the band -- the riffs, the screaming vocals, all of the tradition and heritage that we try to keep somehow in our music as we've moved along."

The band are said to be preparing to launch their final major world tour on September 10, however, it doesn't mean the band will stop performing in different countries:

"This is not the end of JUDAS PRIEST. We're just cutting back on these big, long treks around the world that we love to do," Halford explained.

"But yet we're facing mortality; as a metal singer I'm still able to do the vast majority of things that have laid out before me...but I'd be the first to admit that I'm finding it more challenging now, and I don't want to get into that syndrome where you end up a little bit punch-drunk and you're not giving the performance that you want to give.

"I'm delighted that we're taking this approach because the inevitable payoff is that it gives the band more life. We're able to continue doing selective shows in the future and, as importantly, keep recording and making new metal records."

LAST year, Patti Smith released her memoir, Just Kids, recalling her and Robert Mapplethorpe's time as struggling artists in New York City. The book promptly became a New York Times bestseller and won the 2010 National Book Award for non-fiction.

Last month, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, long regarded as punk's poet laureate, released an anthology of her singles, the 18-track album Outside Society. Not that Smith is much of an outsider these days.

This week, Smith was awarded the prestigious Polar Music Prize in Sweden for ''devoting her life to art in all its forms''.

Iggy Pop And The Stooges Writing New Material

Iggy Pop revealed In a recent interview with Rolling Stone that he has been working on new material with Stooges guitarist James Williamson.

"Yeah, we started trading stuff by MP3 back and forth as soon as we started. We actually did get together this spring. He came to my house in Miami and we wrote 10 things. I think we like about half of them. One of the songs, 'Requiem For A Heavyweight,' is a really nice piece of music that James wrote on the dobro. We played it at a tribute concert to Ron Asheton in Michigan earlier this year. I was so nervous that I sang the first half of it an octave too high by accident. I sounded like I was the singer in America. I've always liked 'Sister Golden Hair' and 'Horse With No Name,' but I'm not that guy."

"I wrote another song about merchandising called 'Popular Pants.' We'll keep writing. I think he'd like to make an album and I'd like to make more the score for an intelligent video game. So as far as what the former might be, I don't know," he said.

Five Finger Death Punch Reveal New Artwork

Californian metal heavyweights Five Finger Death Punch will release their new opus, ‘American Capitalist’, On October 11 and have recently revealed the album’s artwork. The record is the follow-up to the band’s 2009 sophomore ‘effort War Is The Answer.' However it will be the band’s first recording not to feature bassist Matt Snell, who left the group in December 2010. They should be just fine....

Heavy Metal Legends Anvil Announce New Album

The metal vets announced they will be releasing a new album 'Monument of Metal: The Very Best of Anvil' on September 27th. This will cover tracks from their rock n’ roll roots starting 30 years ago.

According to founding member and vocalist Steve “Lips” Kudlow: “This compilation is a great diverse collection of Anvil’s history. It’s a good retrospective of 30+ years of the creating and recording of Anvil’s music. These tracks are among some of our favorites.”

Drummer Robb Reiner says, “These tracks are more to do with power and melody rather than just the speed aspect, although there relevant gems included here! We could endlessly compile Anvil tracks, as most are outstanding in their own rights. I feel this Monument of Metal makes a statement introducing Anvil to new pounders along satisfying the faithful.”

GRAVEWORM: New Album Details Revealed

Italian dark metal outfit GRAVEWORM will release its new album, "Fragments Of Death", on October 21 via Nuclear Blast Records. The follow-up to 2009's "Diabolical Figures" was recorded in July at the Dream Sound Studios in Munich, Germany and was mastered by Jan Vacik. According to a press release, "The songs are about the death in its thousand faces, which is also reflected in the album title and cover art. Musically, the album can be seen as a mixture of the best of the last four records, with some old-school roots and definitive darker than its predecessors."

Let's learn more about the song in a new feature here on the CVR Blog, where we take a look at some of the elements and facts about some of the best singles of our era called "45rpm SongFacts."

This is the most covered pop song of all time, over 3,000 versions recorded according to The Guinness Book Of World Records. For years, it was also the song with the most radio plays, but in 1999 BMI music publishing reported that "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" had passed it. Still, at any given time, some version of "Yesterday" is probably being broadcast somewhere.

Paul McCartney wrote this song and was the only Beatle to play on it. It was the first time a Beatle recorded without the others, and marked a shift to more independent accomplishments among the group.

While touring in Paris, McCartney claims he tumbled out of bed and the tune was in his head. He thought he had heard it somewhere before, and played the melody to different people in the music industry to make sure he wasn't stealing it. The working title was "Scrambled Eggs" until Paul could figure out lyrics.

This song caused a rift between McCartney and Yoko Ono. When The Beatles Anthology album was released, McCartney asked that the writing credit on this read "McCartney/Lennon," since he wrote it. Yoko refused, and it was listed as "Lennon/McCartney," which is how they usually credited songs written by either Beatle (between Please Please Me and With The Beatles, the song credits turned from McCartney/Lennon to Lennon/McCartney). In 2003, McCartney switched the writing credit for the first time when he listed 19 Beatles songs on his Back In The US album as "Paul McCartney and John Lennon." Paul claims he and John made an informal agreement in 1962 regarding the credits, but he had every right to switch it if he chose. Yoko disagreed

John Lennon referenced this song in his anti-McCartney solo effort "How Do You Sleep?" with the lyrics, ''The only thing you've done was yesterday, and since you've gone you're just another day."

George Harrison played lead guitar on this track, and Klaus Voorrman played the bass. Voorman, an old friend from The Beatles Hamburg days, did the cover collage for The Beatles album Revolver. The fact that others who were close to McCartney also played on this track made it even more painful for the former Beatle.

In 1965, the Doors recorded their first demo’s at World Pacific Jazz Studios in Los Angeles, California, where they cut six Jim Morrison songs.

In 1968, the Doors were forced to perform as a trio at a concert in Amsterdam after lead singer Jim Morrison collapsed while dancing during the Jefferson Airplane's performance. cool....

In 1970, an ad was run in "Melody Maker" by Genesis. Phil Collins answered the ad and eventually joined the group.

In 1971, the Grateful Dead's second live LP is given the unimaginative title of 'Grateful Dead' but Rolling Stone Magazine reports that leader Jerry Garcia originally wanted to call it 'Starfuck.' It would become the band's first Top 25 album.

Also in 1971, the Grateful Dead's former manager, Lenny Hart, was arrested after taking off with $70,000 that belonged to the band.

In 1972, the Erie Canal Soda Pop Festival was held over three days on Bull Island, near Griffin, Indiana. The Promoters expected over 50,000 music fans over 200,000 attended the festival. Many bands pulled out as the festival drifted steadily into anarchy. Bands that did appear included Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids, Black Oak Arkansas, Cheech and Chong, Foghat, Albert King, Brownsville Station, Canned heat, Flash, Ravi Shankar, Rory Gallagher, Lee Micheals and Frosty, The Eagles, The Amboy Dukes, and Gentle Giant. Three concert goers drowned in the Wabash River and as the festival ended, the remnants of the crowd burned down the music stand.

In 1989, Ozzy Osbourne was arrested for threatening to kill his wife, Sharon.

In 1989, Paula Abdul had the number one song in the US with "Cold Hearted".

In 2005, a televised benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Katrina was marred when Kanye West stated "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

The Who Announce Full Details and Track-Listing for the Release of 'Quadrophenia: The Director's Cut' Boxset

Release date: November 15th 2011 via Universal Music Enterprises

A stunning 'Director's Cut' of the landmark 1973 album produced, authorized and overseen by Pete Townshend.

Considered by Pete Townshend himself to be the Who album that he is most proud of, 'Quadrophenia' is the last album in the Who back catalogue to be given the deluxe treatment and is perhaps the most deserving. After the 1971 album 'Who's Next', Pete Townshend returned to the 'rock-opera' concept, so dramatically realized through 'Tommy', with another ambitious double-album masterpiece. Based around the story of Jimmy – QUADROPHENIA tells the tale of a young mod and his struggle to come of age in the mid-1960s. The story also takes its influence from the band's early fans from the original mod era, and its themes of teenage angst and disaffection still resonate strongly today.

The full details and track-listing for the forthcoming 'Director's Cut' reissue of 'Quadrophenia' are released for the first time below and Pete Townshend has opened his personal archive for the very first time for the release, stating that:

"The time has come for me and my team to honour 'Quadrophenia' with a carefully presented package that features examples of the impact surround sound (quadrophonic) would have on the music, to remaster the vinyl mixes, and to collect and restore my demos. I am also going to try to shed some light on the way 'Quadrophenia' came about, and how it was inspired by events in my life in 1970 and 1971 when I scribbled or typed the very first notes and lyrics for some of the songs that made it onto the final record.'

'Quadrophenia: The Director's Cut' will be the definitive version of the album and a must for any self-respecting fan of The Who and beyond.

Sony/PIAS Warehouse Fire a Planned Heist?

While earlier this month three teens were arrested in connection to the Sony/PIAS warehouse fire that destroyed tens of thousands of CDs and vinyl records, newly leaked information is suggesting that the operation could have been a planned robbery cashing in on the mayhem of the London riots.

London's Telegraph newspaper [via The Daily Swarm] points to undisclosed sources within the security industry suggesting that the Sony/PIAS distribution warehouse was targeted by a professional gang who used the developing riots as the perfect cover for their robbery.

Business searches area for classic vinyl records

SALISBURY -- Each weekend while many workers are still nestled in their beds, two friends with a passion for music rise early to travel the region in search of vinyl records.

Matt Gunby, a freelance photographer, and Dave Morris, a warehouse manager, get on the road by 6 a.m., stopping at yard sales and flea markets where they dig through boxes and stacks of LPs and 45s.

Even on rainy days where there are fewer vendors and garage sales, Gunby still wakes early and is on the hunt. He has to see what's out there.

Gunby and Morris dig through piles of records each week in search of new records to add to the inventory at their new retail location, U Dig Records, inside Seasons Best in downtown Salisbury.

From the perfection and major ripening of Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes to the sweet eclecticism of Lykke Li, it’s been a hell of a year for acts faced with the dreaded sophomore slump. In a typical year, we’ll witness dozens of bands fall victim to the hurdle, but on the whole, bands poised to challenge their respective slumps this year have ended up knocking them out of the park. We’re happy to add one more name to the roster: Cymbals Eat Guitars.

There are a hundred different reasons this record will speak to you louder than its already very good predecessor. Whether it’s the shoegaze approach they’ve adopted that is a perfect fit for the band, the vastly improved musicianship, or the overall boldness with which they attack this album, something’s bound to catch you, whether or not you were taken with the debut album.

Punk cover band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are touring Japan to promote their new EP "Sing in Japanese" this month. Comprised of players from famed punk and rock acts NOFX, Lagwagon, Swingin' Utters, and Foo Fighters, they will play Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka before performing at Yokohama's sold-out Air Jam 2011 festival on Sept. 18.

When told that some overseas musicians have called off tours because of the problems from the Great East Japan Earthquake in March, vocalist Spike Slawson says Me First and the Gimme Gimmes never considered not coming.

"I can't believe some bands canceled their tours," says a shocked Slawson......

Tom Tom Club Plotting Fall Release for 30th Anniversary

In the midst of its 30th anniversary celebration, the Talking Heads spinoff the Tom Tom Club is working on new music.

"We're a little behind schedule on it," confesses drummer Chris Frantz, who put the Tom Tom Club together with his wife, bassist and vocalist Tina Weymouth, and used a rotating cast of musicians through its five studio albums. "We were hoping to have something out by the fall. We'll make it, but it might be late fall rather than early fall." And Frantz doesn't expect a full-scale album release that would be Tom Tom Club's first since "The Good, the Bad and the Funky" in 2000.

"We're not really thinking in terms of albums anymore. We're thinking in terms of singles and EPs, and if we have enough EPs that sound good, then we'll put them together for an album," he explains.......

In 1953, the popular Lubbock, Texas duo of Buddy Holly and Bob Montgomery audition for radio station KDAV's Sunday Party. They will earn a time slot on Sunday afternoon that becomes known as The Bob and Buddy Show.

In 1955, Alan Freed's First Anniversary Rock 'n Roll Party kicks off at the Paramount Theater in Brooklyn, New York. Among those appearing on the bill are Chuck Berry, Tony Bennett, The Nutmegs, The Rhythmettes, The Cardinals and The Four Voices.

In 1956, 19 year-old Jerry Lee Lewis arrives at Sun Records hoping for an audition, only to find that owner Sam Phillips is on vacation in Florida. Jerry Lee records some demos that Phillips will hear when he gets back.

In 1956, Elvis Presley bought his mother a pink Cadillac.

In 1962, Tommy Roe had his first number one hit when "Sheila" reached the top of the US Pop chart. The tune was a re-recorded version of a song that was first released in 1960 when Roe was part of a group called The Satins. Roe's recording success would continue until 1971, during which time he had five more Top 10 hits.

In 1965, James Brown and Booker T. & the MG's appear on TV's Shindig! The Godfather of Soul performed "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag".

In 1967, the movie "The Fastest Guitar Alive," starring Roy Orbison and Sheb Wooley, was released.

Also in 1967, Boz Scaggs rejoined Steve Miller's band where he would be included on the albums Children of the Future and Sailor.

In 1972, the O'Jays receive a Gold record for their first single, "Backstabbers", which made it to #3 on Billboard's Pop chart.

In 1973, Paul and Linda McCartney along with Denny Laine begin recording tracks for Wings' upcoming album "Band On The Run" at EMI studios in Lagos, Scotland.

In 1976, Ode Records president Lou Adler and employee Neil Silver were kidnapped at Adler's house in Malibu. The two are released after paying a $25,000 ransom. A week later, a California couple was charged with the crime, but a third accomplice got away.

In 1977, rhe rock group Blondie, featuring former Playboy Bunny Debra Harry, sign their first major record company contract with Chrysalis Records.

Also in 1977, the Beach Boys, despite being embroiled in bitter feuds between themselves, played a free concert in New York's Central Park to an estimated crowd of over 150,000.

INXS performs live for the first time in Sydney, Australia in 1979.

In 1984, It had been twenty-four years since Tina Turner had been on Billboard's Hot 100 with a song she recorded with her husband Ike called "A Fool In Love". Now she was back with the number one song in the US, "What's Love Got To Do With It". The record would go on to win Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Pop Vocal Performance - Female and Rock Vocal Performance - Female.

Paul McCartney released his "Press to Play" LP in 1986.

In 1995, Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum was opened with a seven-hour concert with dozens of stars.

The iTunes Music Store reached 125 million songs sold in 2004.

In 2005, 77 year-old Fats Domino was rescued from the flooding in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina. He had earlier told his agent that he planned to remain in his home despite the order to evacuate.

Also in 2005, Barry Cowsill, bass guitarist for The Cowsills, died on or about September 1st from injuries believed to be caused by Hurricane Katrina. His body was not recovered until December 28th, 2005, from the Chartres Street Wharf, New Orleans. He was 51.

In 2008, Jerry Reed, whose hits included "Amos Moses" (#8 in 1971) and "When You're Hot, You're Hot" (#9 in 1971), died of complications from emphysema at the age of 71. He is also remembered for his 1977 co-starring role in Smokey And The Bandit with Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason and Sally Field.

DEAR JERRY: Here's a two prong question, a fun one that I doubt you've ever been asked.

Who is the top singles artist who never had a charted album? Then, who is the top albums artist who never had a charted vinyl single?

DEAR HOWARD: Yeah, this is a new one alright.

To be fair, we must limit the scope here to no earlier than the 1950s, and the beginning of the LP era.

My pick for the first prong is the McGuire Sisters. From 1954 through '61, Phyllis, Christine, and Dorothy charted one place or another with about 35 songs, including one No. 1 hit, “Sugartime” (1958). Yet, the only McGuire with a hit LP is Barry, with “Eve of Destruction” (1965).

Bill Gaither is my overwhelming choice for prong two. Using several different variations of his name (Bill Gaither Trio; The Gaithers; Gaither Vocal Band; Bill and Gloria Gaither; etc.), he has about 40 albums that did on the charts what his singles could not.


DEAR JERRY: Several men had recordings of ”Funny How Time Slips Away,“ but I have never heard it by a woman. Since I don't hear anything in the lyrics that makes it gender specific, is there perhaps a female version I missed? It would have been a perfect fit for Patsy Cline.

I bought it in the '60s by Johnny Tillotson. Is his the original?

DEAR MARGARET: Johnny Tillotson's 1963 issue of ”Funny How Time Slips Away“ (Cadence 1441) may have been the first one you heard, but his is neither the original waxing nor the first to have a pop hit with Willie Nelson's masterful composition.

Billy Walker was first out of the gate with the tune, in September 1961, but his single (Columbia 42050) barely made the C&W charts, then vanished after just two weeks.

Definitely a shaky beginning, but royalties for Willie were about to increase.

The following month, in Nashville, Chet Atkins signed 18-year-old Jimmy Elledge, and produced his first record. For this they chose ”Funny How Time Slips Away“ (RCA Victor 47-7946). The session featured Floyd Cramer on piano and took place at RCA's legendary Studio B.

Despite the obvious C&W connections (Atkins, Floyd, Nashville), Jimmy's version was strictly a pop, or Top 40 format, hit. Spending 14 weeks on Billboard and peaking at No. 22 qualifies it as a success.

Perhaps because only two years had passed since the Elledge hit, Johnny Tillotson's 1963 version (Cadence 1441) only reached No. 50.

In the summer of '64, soul singer Joe Hinton gave “Funny” a go, and it turned out to be not only his biggest hit (Back Beat 541), but the top selling single overall of Willie Nelson's famed opus. It made No. 1 on the R&B and No. 13 on the Pop chart.

Many females recorded “Funny How Time Slips Away,” though, other than a minor hit for Dorothy Moore in 1976 (Malaco 1033), none made a splash of any consequence.

Here are a few recognizable gals who happily added “Funny How Time Slips Away” to their discographies: Wanda Jackson; Brenda Lee; Diana Ross and the Supremes; Tina Turner; Damita Jo; and Linda Ronstadt dueting with Homer Simpson.


IZ ZAT SO? Amazingly, of all the classics penned by Willie Nelson in the '60s, not once did Willie's own version become a hit, though mostly by design. His primary source of income then was from writing, not singing. That would change big time in the '70s.

Three profitable examples, and those who made them hits, are: “Night Life” (Ray Price, Rusty Draper); “Hello Walls” (Faron Young); and “Crazy” (Patsy Cline).

Beach Boys announce release details of lost album Smile

Surviving band members collaborate to issue abandoned Smile Sessions album 44 years after original studio recordings

The Smile Sessions will be released by Capitol/EMI on October 31st and will be available digitally and as a dual CD, double vinyl, or in box sets including 7 inch singles, shadow-boxes, signed lithographs and even a custom-made Hobie longboard. Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Mike Love have worked with engineers to polish off the Beach Boys' original session masters, which were aborted when the group began work on 1967's Smiley Smile.

Besides Smile itself, the Beach Boys are issuing four albums of bonus material, including demos, alternate mixes and studio chatter. There is also a 60-page hardbound book, including essays by Wilson, Love, Jardine and Bruce Johnston, who joined the Beach Boys in the lead-up to Smile.

MAGNUM Announce Release Date, Tracklisting, Cover Art For New Album

British hard rock outfit MAGNUM are scheduled to release their new album 'Evolution,' in Europe November 14th, Germany November 11th, and US/Canada at the end of November via teamhammer/SPV.  'Evolution' contains eight songs from their previous comeback albums which were partially re-recorded and fully re-mixed, two from 'The Visitation' album and two totally new recorded songs.

ASTRAL DOORS: 'Jerusalem' Teaser Available

"Jerusalem", the new album from Swedish melodic metallers ASTRAL DOORS, will be released in October. The CD, which will be made available as a jewelcase, digipack and on vinyl, was mixed by Daniel Bergstrand, who has previously worked with BEHEMOTH, MESHUGGAH, DIMMU BORGIR, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and SOILWORK, among others. The cover art was designed by Mattias Eriksson

Roadrunner Records just announced that they have signed progressive rock behemoths Rush.

"We have tremendous respect for Roadrunner Records, and what Cees Wessels and Jonas Nachsin have built on a worldwide level. After years of Roadrunner pursuing the band, Tom Lipsky presented a deal that worked and the timing was right. We wanted to be at a label focused on the rock genre – and that's Roadrunner," said Ray Danniels, manager of Rush.

"In another life I worked with Rush and their great management team more than 30 years ago and to have Rush finally on the Roadrunner label is a dream come true. I am grateful for Ray Danniels' confidence in this new partnership," said Cees Wessels, Roadrunner Records Chairman.

"Rush has a tradition of excellence and independence, both in the studio and on the live stage, and they remain as prolific today as at any point in their career. We are excited to be their label partners," said Tom Lipsky, President of Lipsky Music, LLC, who brokered the significant deal for Roadrunner.

The first release from Rush through this deal will be various live configurations, recorded during their highly successful Time Machine tour that wrapped earlier this summer. Details of the release will be revealed in the coming weeks. The band will remain on Anthem/Universal Music in Canada only.

Delta Blues Great David "Honeyboy" Edwards Passes Away at 96

One of the last of the bluesmen whose roots go back to the early-20th century has passed away. David "Honeyboy" Edwards died today (Monday) about 3 A.M. in his home at the age of 96.

Edwards stayed active musically until this past April when he fell ill, with shows still scheduled in Chicago and Europe. His last appearance was April 16 and 17 at the Juke Joint Festival and Cathead Mini-Festival in Clarksdale, MS.

Top 5 eBay Vinyl Record Sales - Week Ending 08/20/2011

Ooohhhh, cool - a week of oddities. Ok, the Butcher Cover isn't odd . . . well, yes it is for the Top 5 . . . it's definitely not the prime Beatles collectible anymore, the UK 1st pressings of "Please Please Me" fetch more money, and low numbered "White Albums" are classier and far more interesting. Hell, I'm more interested in a South American mono fold of "Abbey Road", and though they go for far less money than a Butcher Cover, they are way harder to find.

The #1 goes to a local LA punk treasure; the two Prog LP's in the #3 and #5 spots are both out of Italy. That David Bowie single is a real impossible record to find as a stock copy. Promo's fetch around $100.00, but this stock copy sold for almost $1k more than the last known sale, and at about the same price that it sold for in 2006.

In 1957, Elvis Presley appeared at the Empire Stadium in Vancouver, Canada. This was only the third time ever Presley had performed outside of the U.S. – and it would be the last. 26,000 fans attended the show with tickets costing $1.50, $2.50 and $3.50.

In 1958, Ricky Nelson kicks off his musical concert career by appearing at Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he sets an all time attendance record for the venue by performing in front of 44,221 people, spread out over two days. His fee for the gig was $10,000 and his supporting acts were comedian Henny Youngman and The Four Preps.

In 1963, the Angels become the first white girl group to have a US number one hit when "My Boyfriend's Back" topped the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1967, the Beatles announced that they would handle their own affairs following the death of manager Brian Epstein.

In 1968, Decca Records released what has been called the Rolling Stones most political song, "Street Fighting Man". The number was written after Mick Jagger attended a March 1968 anti-war rally at London's US embassy, during which mounted police attempted to control a crowd of 25,000. The single proved to be very popular, but was kept out of the US Top 40 (reaching #48) because many radio stations refused to play it based on what were perceived as subversive lyrics.



Also in 1968, the first Isle of Wight Festival was held with performers including the Jefferson Airplane, Fairport Convention, T-Rex, the Move, the Pretty Things and the Crazy World of Arthur Brown.

In 1991, Metallica started a four-week run at #1 on the US album chart with Metallica. The album featured “Enter Sandman,” “Sad but True,” “The Unforgiven” and “Nothing Else Matters” and went on to sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. alone.

In 2002, it was announced that Lance Bass of *NSYNC would be the first celebrity astronaut. He would not be on the flight when he failed to pay the $20 million fee.

In 2004, Carl Wayne, the lead singer of the influential 1960s Pop group, The Move, died of esophageal cancer at the age of 61

In 2007, Hilly Kristal, founder of the New York punk club CBGB, died from complications arising from lung cancer at the age of 75. Kristal was credited with discovering Patti Smith and The Ramones and his club became a breeding ground for punk rock. The New York City venue, whose full title CBGB OMFUG stood for “country, bluegrass, blues and other music for uplifting gormandizers,” was originally launched to showcase country music.
