From Peter Frampton’s Frampton Comes Alive! to Jeff Beck’s Blow by Blow, albums throughout rock’s glorious history have often featured Gibson instruments prominently on their covers. In a 2009 feature story, we focused on 10 classic discs that beautifully showcased Gibson acoustics and electrics. Below are 10 additional favorites – some of which are already considered classics, and some of which are destined to achieve that status.

Bob Marley & The Wailers, Live at the Roxy

Recorded on May 26, 1976, at the Roxy nightclub in Hollywood, this live album captured Bob Marley and The Wailers as they were first taking America by storm. Fittingly, the cover shot features Marley with his beloved Les Paul Special. A beautiful instrument, the guitar was distinguished by its aged cherry finish, its mahogany body and its mahogany neck. In an exclusive interview with Gibson.com, Stephen Marley revealed that his father often referred to the guitar as “Old Faithful.”

Primus: Les Claypool Calls Upcoming Album Great And Funky

Primus’ first album in over a decade, Green Naugahyde, will be hitting shelves on September 13th. The group’s bassist and vocalist, Les Claypool, talked about the upcoming release in a recent interview with MusicRadar.com.

"Truthfully, I think it's a great record," Claypool said. "In some ways, it feels new in that it’s these three guys finally making a record. And in other ways, it's like classic Primus, kind of like the Frizzle Fry period. We're clicking. Hopefully, that comes through to everybody."

KRISIUN: New Album Details Revealed

Brazilian death metallers KRISIUN will release their new album, "The Great Execution", on October 31 in Europe and November 1 in North America via Century Media Records. The band's eighth studio CD "musically expands KRISIUN trademark high-speed death metal violence with a heavily increased amount of diversity ranging from extreme tempo variations over distinct rhythm patterns to clean guitars and even Flamenco parts!" according to a press release.

KRISIUN only used analog gear and instruments this time to avoid the compressed sound that so many musicians produce today.

The Flexi-Disc is used for the first time by Nestles Chocolate in 1967.

to clarify this:

Flexible records were commercially introduced as the Eva-tone Soundsheet in 1960, but were previously available in the Soviet Union as "roentgenizdat", "bones" or "ribs", underground samizdat recordings on x-ray film. Every year between 1963 and 1969, The Beatles made a special Christmas recording which was made into a flexi disc and sent to members of their fan club.



In 1968, working at Abbey Road studio’s in London, The Beatles recorded overdubs onto the new George Harrison song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Eric Clapton added the guitar solo and became the first outside musician to play on a Beatles recording. George Harrison later said that Clapton's presence had another effect on the band: "It made them all try a bit harder; they were all on their best behavior."

as Tim points out:

While Eric Clapton was certainly the most prominent outside musician to first appear on a Beatles record, many others had preceded him. George Martin played keyboard on several tracks, including his famous sped-up harpsichord solo on "In My Like" and there was the string quartet on "Eleanor Rigby," the piccolo trumpet on "Penny Lane" and the full orchestra (plus the room's air conditioner) on "A Day In the Life." Though not technically a musician, roadie Mal Evans often added handclaps and whatever else was needed during recording sessions, such as helping hold down the final piano chord on "A Day in the Life." Thus, Eric was not the first but was, without a doubt, an invaluable part of that recording.

Famously forged in a cauldron of intense artistic pressure, the Magic Band emerged as a group unlike any other in popular music. Under the tenacious tutelage of Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart, this strikingly innovative unit took their music to unexplored places, creating a musical language all their own. Throughout the band’s chaotic history with Beefheart, drummer John “Drumbo” French served as the chief translator, deciphering the Captain’s often cryptic instructions into a discernable direction for the band. His tireless efforts provided the essential conduit through which Beefheart’s multi-hued compositional visions transformed into concrete audio sculptures. In simpler terms, he was the glue.

In response to repeated fan requests, French assembled an all-star cast of Magic Band veterans—Denny “Freebo Reelers” Walley/guitar, Gary “Mantis” Lucas/guitar, Mark “Rockette Morton” Boston/bass and Michael Traylor/drums—and brought them to the U.K. for several concert tours between 2003 and 2006. Freed from the confines of his drum kit, French stepped into the front man role, singing and playing harmonica. Exploring songs from the Magic Band’s rich catalog, the group returned to these compositions with fervor, faithfully recreating them while simultaneously adding new sonic colors to the palette. Enraptured audiences across the empire reveled in the revived music, thrilled to hear the long-silent repertoire performed again.

This recording captures an especially memorable performance at the intimate Zodiac club in Oxford, England from June 6th, 2005. Riding the momentum of two successful concerts in Portsmouth and Penzance, the group was careful to keep their focus and not become overconfident. That night, surrounded by an enthusiastic audience that included many friends and acquaintances, the band played a transcendent set. As French relates in the album’s liner notes, “It was on this night when I was able to savor the words and music of Don Van Vliet and in a sense ‘re-discover’ the greatness of the work. I could feel the power of the compositions as they rained down upon the crowd, and I found myself laughing all over again at many of the double-entendres, and euphemisms.” How fortunate, then, that tape was rolling on this enchanted evening! John French personally mixed these eighteen tracks for release, ensuring that the zeitgeist of this special show would be preserved for all time. In 1935, the Hoboken Four, with member Frank Sinatra, appeared on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour.

In 1952, after Atlantic Records bought Ray Charles’ contract from Swingtime, Charles recorded his first session for Atlantic, cutting four songs. Over the next seven years, he would record such classics as “Mess Around,” “I Got a Woman,” “Hallelujah, I Love Her So” and “What’d I Say.”

In 1954, radio personality Alan Freed begins broadcasting on New York's WINS at an annual salary of $75,000. Although the phrase "rock and roll" had been around for a while, Freed is generally given credit for making it popular.

In 1958, Dick Clark signed a recording contract with ABC-Paramount Records. His first release is an album by the Bandstanders of current hits.

In 1965, an advertisement in Variety announced auditions for the Monkees. Among those who tried and failed were Stephen Stills, Danny Hutton, Paul Williams and Charles Manson.

In 1971, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences presents Elvis Presley with the Bing Crosby Award, given to performers who "during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic or scientific significance to the field of phonograph records."

In 1973, The Allman Brothers started a five week run at the top of the US album chart with "Brothers And Sisters", the group's only US #1 LP.

In 1973, Marvin Gaye started a two-week run at #1 on the US singles chart with “Let’s Get it On,” his second US #1.



In 1977, guitarist Jimmy McCulloch left Wings to help re-form The Small Faces. McCulloch had played with Paul McCartney’s band on the Venus and Mars and Wings at the Speed of Sound albums, as well as on the Wings Over America tour. He died two years later at the age of 26.

In 1988, Elton John sold some of his costumes and concert memorabilia at an auction in London for $6.2 million.

In 1993, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love appeared on stage together at a show in Hollywood. They performed the Nirvana song “Pennyroyal Tea.”

In 1997, Derek Taylor, the publicist for The Beatles died at age 67. Taylor had been responsible for many of the legends surrounding their career and had also worked with The Beach Boys and The Byrds. In 1967, he helped organize the Monterey Pop Festival together with Lou Adler and John Philips. He helped launch The Beatles Anthology in the ’90s.

In 2003, David Bowie played the first interactive concert which was sent to 21 movie theaters in Europe. Audience members could talk to him via ISDN lines

DEAR JERRY: My curiosity about an unusual record, by the Jack Halloran Singers, prompted an internet search, which directed me to one of your December 2001 columns.

That week you got a letter from Jack's daughter, Dawn Halloran, confirming his 1957 original “Little Drummer Boy” first came titled “Carol of the Drum.” That was one year before Harry Simeone's famous version.

What I have is a seven-inch Columbia Transcription (ZPC-8684), which I cannot play because it runs at 78 rpm.

Apparently a disclaimer of sorts, the label also states: “Pressed in U.S.A. But Not Recorded By Columbia Records.”

The full title is “G/B for Me,” whatever that means. A white sticker above the hole may be covering some other print. The reverse side is all blank, with no grooves and a plain white label with no printing.

Lastly, the label credits “The Jack Halloren Singers. A typo perhaps?

DEAR KEVIN: This recording is unusual in more ways than one.

You have a Columbia custom pressing, the client in this case being St. Louis-based Griesedieck Brothers Brewery. The identification number points to this being a 1948 or '49 production, which would only have been made at 78 rpm.

The “G/B” has a dual meaning; either Griesedieck Brothers or Great Beer.

At first glance, one might think this disc contains typical radio commercials, such as the :30 and :60 spots so commonly heard.

That is not the case at all.

“G/B for Me” is a complete, professionally produced 2:14 song. Apart from the message, it is similar to most any popular recording at the time.

As for the lyrics, they sing the praises of the brewery's aging process: “It's G/B for me, aging makes the difference. G/B is aged longer than other beers. It's aged longer, far longer by Griesedieck Brothers. For finest quality lager beer, sing out with all the others.”

The Griesedieck family began brewing beer over 100 years ago, and are still doing so. They are very well known in the Midwest.

Though none of the current staff were around in 1958, I managed to speak with Bob Griesedieck, who has a file copy of this record. Bob is uncertain of its purpose, but allows for the possibility that this disc might have been given away as part of some sports promotion, possibly tying in with St. Louis Cardinals baseball or St. Louis University basketball games. We do know the Griesediecks held the radio sponsorship rights for both teams at that time.

As for the “Halloren” spelling, that is an error. It should be Halloran.


DEAR JERRY: In the pop and rock vinyl era, there were many two-record albums, but sets of three or more were rare.

I remember only three: “All Things Must Pass” (George Harrison), the first “Woodstock” album, and Chicago's “Live at Carnegie Hall.” Are there any others?

DEAR WARREN: Even if we eliminate classical, jazz, soundtracks, various artists compilations, mail-order special products (Reader's Digest, Longines, Candlelite, etc.), and foreign albums, there are still too many to list.

Their individual vinyl edition boxes include as many as 23 LPs.

Then there is one triple box behemoth, “The Complete Commodore Jazz Recordings,” containing 66 LPs and probably with a price tag in the $800 to $1,200 range.

Megadeth Reveals New Album, "TH1RT3EN" Artwork And Tracklist

My Dying Bride Announces New EP

My Dying Bride is releasing a new EP, 'The Barghest O' Whitby,' on November 7th via Peaceville Records on CD and limited vinyl.

Said the band on the origin of the idea, “Carrying straight on from the success of 'Evinta' found us kind of out of breath for a second; we were already aware of a new-found love of all things bleak and grey and were eager to start writing in a more traditional My Dying Bride style. What did catch us off guard was the increased heaviness and the fresh approach to song writing. Moving away somewhat with the lyrical theme from our usual feeding ground, we found ourselves on the rainy moors of Yorkshire contemplating the story of the Barghest, a supernatural entity hell bent on revenge. The tale now to be told wove itself into a 25-minute epic which initially we thought would be a three part EP, but it simply became one very long song full of everything My Dying Bride and more. The violins conjure lonely tears atop a chasm of epic British doom.”

"The Barghest O' Whitby" was recorded at Futureworks Studios, Manchester with long-time production partner and engineer, Mags. The release is the first to feature violin/keyboardist Shaun Macgowan, and sees the return of Shaun “Winter“ Taylor Steels to the drum-stool for this recording. Retro Room owner turns junk to art

YOUNGSTOWN – Walking into the The Retro Room, owner Todd Tolson tells me the stores not open. Not technically.

"Well, it is and it isn't," he says.

Tolson used to run a popular furniture and junk store up Market Street a few blocks. This new store (formally called The Retro Room Records & Art Collection) is smaller, stocked densely with cooler, hipper vintage goods.

"I like to say it's everything you never wanted, but hopefully one thing you can't live without," he says.

He explains that his girlfriend has the furniture at a store "up the road."

He's been in this location, 5648 Market St., for 90 days. However, Tolson's been in the business of antiques, collectibles, records and junk for 20 years.

"This store's a little different," he says. "With the art."

Splashed on the walls amid beautifully framed pop and Western art are black circles. Getting closer, you realize: it's art. It's Tolson's art. They're vinyl albums, 45s and 78s, that were scratched, knicked, flattened and otherwise unplayable.

Spoon Records and Mute announce the release of the 40th anniversary edition of the classic Can album Tago Mago on November 15, 2011.

The new edition of this genre-defying album comes packaged in the original UK artwork for the first time since 1971, and includes a bonus CD featuring 50 minutes of unreleased live material from 1972, remastered in 2011.

Tago Mago, the first album with Damo Suzuki on vocals, features the Can line up of Holger Czukay on bass, Michael Karoli on guitars, Jaki Liebezeit on drums and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, and was recorded at Schloss Nörvenich in 1971, released later that year on United Artists.

Can’s influence is well known and far-reaching and the impact they made on music is felt today as keenly as it ever has been. They themselves have always been impossible to classify and reflecting this, the scope of artists who in recent years have cited Can as a major influence is varied. Of all the band’s oeuvre, Tago Mago has been most often cited as an influence for a host of artists including John Lydon, Radiohead, The Fall, Ariel Pink, F*CK Buttons, Sonic Youth, Factory Floor and Queens Of The Stone Age. Just last week Geoff Barrow (Portishead) mentioned Can as his favorite and most inspiring band ever (The Quietus).

All 14 of Can’s studio albums have been newly cut to vinyl from the remastered tapes for release as a vinyl deluxe box set in early 2012. This will include CDs of all the albums, extensive booklets, an exclusive never released live album (vinyl only) and a newly remastered "Out Of Reach" previously unavailable! The vinyl deluxe box set will be available for pre-order at the beginning of October 2011.

The long awaited box set, The Lost Tapes, will be released in March 2012. Curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, and edited and compiled by Jono Podmore, this will include unreleased studio, soundtrack and live material.

To further celebrate the 40th anniversary of Tago Mago, Abtart gallery in Stuttgart (Sep 16 – Nov 5) (www.abtart.com) and Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin (Nov 24 –Dec 18) (www.bethanien.de) will host Halleluwah!, a visual homage to Can. Artists have been invited to interpret Can’s pioneering role in composition, sound, playing technique, and group dynamics.

In 1936, Charles Hardin Holley, later Buddy Holly, was born in Lubbock, TX. His name was misspelled on his first record contract and he decided to leave it that way.

"You Send Me" by Sam Cooke was released in 1957.

In 1958, Georgia Gibbs performed "The Hula-Hoop Song" on The Ed Sullivan Show, boosting the craze that is sweeping North America. The song would be the last of nine Top-40 hits for Gibbs.

In 1963, Three weeks after its release, the Beatles' "She Loves You" hits #1 in England. It remained on the charts for thirty-one consecutive weeks, eighteen of those in the top three.

In 1968, Iron Butterfly's LP, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" entered Billboard's album chart, where it will eventually reach #10. The album rode the now legendary single by the same name into rock and roll history. Today it is a multi-Platinum album which has sold over 25 million copies and was Atlantic Records' biggest selling LP until it was surpassed by 1971's "Led Zeppelin IV".

The title was supposed to be "In The Garden Of Eden." Someone had written "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," possibly while drunk, on a demo copy. A record company executive saw it and decided to use it as the title, since it sounded mystical and Eastern spirituality was big at the time, with The Beatles going to India and The Rolling Stones experimenting with Indian instruments.

The recording that is heard on the album was meant to be a soundcheck for engineer Don Casale while the band waited for the arrival of producer Jim Hilton. However, Casale had rolled a recording tape, and when the rehearsal was completed it was agreed that the performance was of sufficient quality that another take was not needed. Hilton later remixed the recording at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles. The single reached number thirty on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Always noted for the spectacular drum solo, Ron Bushy's drum solo is not as long as people think; it only runs about 2 1/2 minutes, from 6.30 to a little past 9 minutes. Doug Ingle's organ solo immediately follows.

This was the first hit song that could be classified as "Heavy Metal." The phrase was introduced that year in the Steppenwolf song "Born To Be Wild."

Iron Butterfly would have performed this at Woodstock, but they didn't make it because they were stuck at the airport.



In 1968, the Doors played the first of two nights at The Roundhouse, London, playing two shows a night on their first U.K. visit. Granada TV filmed the sold-out gigs (later shown as The Doors are Open), which were attended by members of The Rolling Stones and Traffic.

Also in 1968, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham made their live debut as Led Zeppelin, but were billed as Yard Birds (sic), at Teen Club Box 45 in Gladsaxe (a suburb in the outskirts of Copenhagen), Denmark. Around 1,200 youngsters attended the show at Egegard School.

In 1969, the cartoon version of the Beatles aired for the last time after an almost four year run. The show had debuted on September 25, 1965.

In 1972, Curtis Mayfield's LP, "Super Fly" went Gold as it topped the Billboard Hot 200 album chart on the strength of the title track and "Freddie's Dead". The album is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.

In 1975, the Guess Who play their final concert in Montreal. Core members Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman would return for another tour in 1987.

In 1978, Keith Moon, drummer with The Who, died of an overdose of heminevrin prescribed to combat alcoholism. A post-mortem confirmed there were 32 tablets in his system, 26 of which were undissolved. Moon had attended a party the night before organized by Paul McCartney for the launch of the The Buddy Holly Story movie. He played on all The Who albums from their debut, 1965’s My Generation, to 1978’s Who Are You, which was released two weeks before his death.

In 1986, Mike Nesmith played on stage with the Monkees for the first time since the breakup of the group.

In 1987, Pink Floyd began their "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" tour despite threats to sue by former member Roger Waters.

In 1988, Barry Sadler, who scored a huge 1966 hit with "Ballad Of The Green Berets," was shot while riding in a Guatemala City taxi. Whether someone shot him or the pistol he carried accidentally discharged, will probably never be known. Sadler was hospitalized for 14 months before dying of his injuries.

In 1991, Motley Crue signed a new record contract for $22.5 million.

In 2001, the Michael Jackson 30th Anniversary Celebration was held at Madison Square Garden with guests the rest of the Jackson 5, Eminem, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Destiny's Child and Gladys Knight. It was his first U.S. performance in 11 years.

In 2003, singer-songwriter Warren Zevon died. He recorded more than 15 solo albums, and had the 1978 U.S. #21 single “Werewolves of London.” He also had worked as a session musician and was the piano player and band leader for the Everly Brothers.

Criminal Records owner plans November close

Five years ago, Criminal Records celebrated its 15th anniversary with an in-store party complete with actor-comedians Patton Oswalt and Zack Galifianakis and Athens-based bands Of Montreal and Elf Power.

For its 20th anniversary, the Little Five Points institution known for its new and used CDs, vinyl records, comic books and graphic novels will close its doors unless new investors step in.

“We’ve been underwater ever since the economy became distressed,” founder and owner Eric Levin said Monday. “We’ve been on a rescue mission for three years. I’m done paying for it by myself.”

That's a sentence that makes me feel old, and measures my life as a music professional, my emergence into this career timed around their rise to fame. I've sen them mumblemumble-deep-into-the-double-digits in every conceivable type of setting during their lifespan, but the New York staple of Summer Stage was a fresh and unique take, a place I associated with indie aritsts and jazz ensembles, the kind of shows you'd take a picnic and sit outside the fence when tickets sell out, not a show filled with the godfathers of mid-aughts pop-punk-emo like Pete Wentz or Brendon Urie.

In the increasing down time between Fleetwood Mac tours and albums, Lindsey Buckingham has become unusually prolific as a solo artist, doubling his career output in the last five years by producing three albums. The latest, “Seeds We Sow” (Eagle Rock Entertainment), is essentially a one-man-band affair, with Buckingham donning his mad-scientist lab coat to orchestrate mood swings on voice, guitar and percussion.

Aura Noir To Re-Release 'Black Thrash Attack' On Vinyl

Peaceville Records has announced the following update about re-releasing the "Black Thrash Attack" album from Aura Noir:

Norway’s Aura Noir was formed in 1993 by Aggressor & Apollyon in pursuit of a more thrash-based form of black metal than much of what was coming out at the time - particularly in their homeland - citing bands such as Slayer, Sodom & Kreator as inspirations along with purveyors of the scene such as Venom, for a dirtier, stripped down, violent black/thrash metal sound. Their first official release was the ‘Dreams Like Deserts’ EP on Hot Records in 1994, and from there-on the band has become a cult act.

‘Black Thrash Attack’ was Aura Noir’s debut full length album, originally recorded & released in 1996, & was a continuation of the intense thrash riffing displayed on ‘Dreams Like Deserts’. This edition of ‘Black Thrash Attack’ has been newly re-mastered by the band in Oslo, & also includes an exclusive cover of the venom classic ’Heavens on Fire’, from the cult ‘Black Metal’ album.

All members of Aura Noir have had illustrious careers to date, with Carl-Michael Eide (Aggressor) currently heading the twisted prog band, Virus, Apollyon is the present bassist in Immortal, & having being Mayhem’s guitarist & main writer for a long period, Rune currently plays in atmospheric doom act, Ava Inferi.

Aura Noir is considered the top black/thrash act in the scene, with extensive touring currently lined up, starting with a European tour in the autumn of 2011, to include the return of Aggressor to the live line-up, having been out of action for several years.

This edition of Black Thrash Attack appears on strictly limited black vinyl.

Mixing Completed on Van Halen Album, Mastering Up Next

Good news regarding Van Halen’s upcoming album – as of a little over three weeks ago, the band has finished mixing the album. The rumor that the mixing process was taking overly long isn’t true, as the mixing began in July and was finished in August.

The album is to be mastered in mid-September. This process should only take around a weeks time, so the album should be 100% completed sometime this month! There is still no word on a definite release date.

The Flexi-Disc is used for the first time by Nestles Chocolate in 1967.

In 1961, Bob Dylan debuted at the Gaslight Cafe in New York City.

In 1968, working at Abbey Road studio’s in London, The Beatles recorded overdubs onto the new George Harrison song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Eric Clapton added the guitar solo and became the first outside musician to play on a Beatles recording. George Harrison later said that Clapton's presence had another effect on the band: "It made them all try a bit harder; they were all on their best behavior."

In 1969, Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" peaked at #7 on the Billboard singles chart. Departing from his usual high pitched, nasal style, Dylan's low-key vocal also pushed the song to #5 in the UK.

In 1994, English keyboard player Nicky Hopkins died at age 50, in Nashville, Tennessee, of complications from intestinal surgery. He was a highly respected session musician and worked with The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, The Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, George Harrison and the Jerry Garcia Band.

In 1997, while an estimated 2.5 billion people watched on television, Elton John sings a re-worked version of "Candle In The Wind" at the funeral of England's Princess Diana. After the song is re-recorded and released as a single, it would become the largest selling record in history.
