Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Pink Floyd Extensive Catalog Reissue Here

An inflatable pig floats above London's Battersea Power Station on Monday in a recreation of Pink Floyd's 1977 album cover for Animals

Residents living near London's Battersea Power Station were greeted with an unusual sight in the sky on Monday: a floating pink pig inspired by the cover of Pink Floyd's Animals.

The giant, inflatable pig — measuring nine metres by four-and-a-half metres — soared over the derelict facility on Monday.

The scene featured on the 1977 album cover was recreated Monday to mark the release of Why Pink Floyd...?, a new offering that provides remastered versions of the band's 14 studio albums, unreleased material and collector's editions.

Released under the banner "Why Pink Floyd?," the band will issue remastered editions of all 14 of its albums along with unreleased material from its archives for super-deluxe box sets. Fans can expect alternative takes, unreleased tracks, restored live concert screen films and live recordings, as well as new booklets and artwork for each of the discs.

The band is offering three types of reissues: remastered CDs called "Discovery," CD/DVD/Blu-ray/memorabilia box sets dubbed "Immersion" and "Experience," which couples one classic album with an additional disc of related content from that project.

“This is a unique collaboration between EMI and one of the most creative and influential bands in history. We have worked together for more than a year on this program, which incorporates all the elements that have made Pink Floyd one of the most inspiring forces in modern music," said Roger Faxon, CEO of EMI Group. "Why Pink Floyd? Because their music is without equal, and these exciting new releases will allow music fans to rediscover their incredible legacy and demonstrate that an appreciation for artistic quality never goes out of fashion.”

The first release from the campaign is the special editions of "The Dark Side of the Moon" on Tuesday: a six-disc "Immersion" box set and two-disc "Experience" version. All 14 digitally remastered studio albums will also be available on Tuesday, either separately or as a box set.

i read with anticipation, but the list is missing some of the icons. that said, it is a great read and we should and will be getting to know more about these artists in the future!

10 Album Cover Artists You Should Know

by Nicole Rallis

A good record cover will stop you dead in your tracks, and make you curious not only about the music it accompanies, but about the artist who created it. Album art is often our first introduction to a band’s latest collection of songs, giving a visual aspect to the sonic creations inside the sleeve. Some acts take on the daunting task themselves, many with fantastic results, while other musicians enlist painters, photographers, crafters, and illustrators for the project. Even in this time of digital downloads, we’re not immune to the effects of a great album cover, and we find it unfortunate that the people behind these pieces rarely get the credit they deserve — so we’ve rounded-up ten that you should know.

the AP has a great read about this historic album:

Grohl, Novoselic, Vig reminisce about 'Nevermind'

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of "Nevermind," which has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, Universal is re-issuing the remastered album Sept. 27 with various special editions. Bonus material includes obscure B-sides, alternate mixes, live recordings and video of the band's 1991 Halloween concert at Seattle's Paramount Theatre.

A limited super deluxe edition features rehearsal recordings captured on a boombox ("It was in the bottom of a box of stuff that was gonna get thrown out," Novoselic recalls) and the original unused "Nevermind" mixes that Vig hoarded until the group began planning for the album's anniversary last year.

AP talked to drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and producer Butch Vig

Grohl: Who knows? I know that if Krist and I went in that booth right now and recorded on that board, we could sound exactly the same. That's how simple the whole thing was.

what an amazing concept, i would hope that other stores can learn something from this and i hope that we see more!

Believe it: Former Believe in Music employees to stage record store reunion in Grand Rapids

By John Sinkevics | The Grand Rapids Press

Count me in as a onetime believer in Believe in Music.

During its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s, the West Michigan-based independent record store chain had every conceivable album release music mavens might covet and a passel of well-informed employees to help track down rarities.

I still remember buying Elvis Costello's “My Aim Is True,” Bob Seger's “Stranger in Town” and Bruce Springsteen's “Darkness on the Edge of Town” from the Fulton Street store all on the same day, hauling these vinyl gems home and playing these classics repeatedly and oh so happily on my turntable.

Many of the true believers weren't just customers, but employees – as many as 500 of them – who worked at some point in two dozen stores across the region at the chain's peak.

“It felt like family” working at Believe in Music, noted former employee Kristi Surine Bast, who called it “a place where people liked to hang out.”

Owner Russ Stuut and his wife, Maggie McCracken, opened their first Grand Rapids store in 1973, ushering in the Believe in Music era.

Amid intense retail competition and dramatic changes in the record industry – which has undergone upheaval due to online music downloading – they closed their last shop 29 years later.

a very interesting read, i try to present all the views about the sound of vinyl. clearly, this author became confused :O)

SCOTT COX: Vinyl is cool, but better than digital? I have the answer

The Bakersfield Californian

There seems to be a bit of a resurgence of music on vinyl records going on, and I recently got caught up in it. And by "caught up in it," I mean scary-mad-scientist obsessed to the point of driving my family out of the house and spending hours straining my ears to compare vinyl against digital, analyzing every hiss, pop and click for clues to whether vinyl is better -- or if it's just cooler to say that it is.

It started in March when my friend Ed Jurdi of the Band of Heathens called before their show at the Crystal Palace. When I told him how cool the new record was, he wanted to know if I had it on CD or vinyl. I told him that this was 2011, so of course I had the CD. He said that if I hadn't heard the album on vinyl, I hadn't heard it at all. I called him a crazy hippie and that was that.

Then, a week later, the UPS guy brought me a box from Austin, Texas. It was chock-full of Heathens merch, from bumper stickers to beer koozies (I still can't figure out why Texans love those stupid things), CDs, shirts and at the bottom was the new album, in all its 180-gram vinyl glory. One small problem: I hadn't owned a turntable since 1983, the year I bought my first CD player. I was so convinced that vinyl was over that I gave my Bang & Olufsen Beogram turntable to my dad and never looked back.

But that's where my analog-obsessed son came to the rescue: He had mooched the old B&O from my dad after the old man had "upgraded" to a new turntable........

not a real religious man, however, i loved the music from jesus christ superstar and i listened to some of this and love the music!

Revelations Book II Double Vinyl Album

This recorded gem was recently mastered at Masterdisk New York City. Revelations Book II is soundtrack story about the second coming of Jesus Christ who arrives in the future of today as a rock-n-roll star. The album concept was conceived by Ron English who wrote all the lyrics and is a limited edition of 1000 copies

We believe for several artists and bands who particpated in recording of Revelations Book II, it represents the best of their respective discography. The album is a great work of collaboration in recorded music. Due to be released in late October 2011. Album to be released in vinyl and projected to be a musical play.

About Ron English: www.popaganda.com

One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books and television. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters, including MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in the hit movie “Supersize Me,” and Abraham Obama, the fusion of America’s 16th and 44th Presidents, an image widely discussed in the media as directly impacting the 2008 election. Other characters carousing through English’s art, in paintings, billboards, and sculpture include three-eyed rabbits, udderly delicious cowgirls and grinning skulls, blending stunning visuals with the bitingly humorous undertones of America’s Premier Pop Iconoclast.

and in music history for today, september 26th:

In 1887, Emile Berliner, a 36 year-old German immigrant living in Washington DC, applies for a patent on his invention, the gramophone. The machine was the first to play flat discs as opposed to Thomas Edison's wax cylinder apparatus. The patent would be granted in November.

In 1937, American blues singer Bessie Smith died aged 43 after being involved in a car accident while traveling along Route 61 outside Memphis, Tennessee. Her 1923 song “Downhearted Blues” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2006.

In 1956, Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill" entered the US Pop chart, where it will reach number four.

In 1960, Connie Francis became the first female singer in the Rock and Roll era to have two consecutive number one singles when "My Heart Has a Mind Of Its Own" went to the top of the Billboard chart. It followed "Everybody's Somebody's Fool".

In 1961, Bob Dylan started as opening act for the Greenbriar Boys. He stayed two weeks.

The Kinks release their first US hit, "You Really Got Me" in 1964. The song will spend 10 weeks on the Billboard chart and rise to #7.

45 rpm SongFacts

Ray Davies wrote this with the help of his brother (and Kinks guitarist) Dave. Ray played it for Dave on piano, and Dave tried it on guitar. Their first version was 6-minutes long.

Dave Davies got the dirty guitar sound by slashing the speaker cone on his amp with a razor blade. The vibration of the fabric produced an effect known as "fuzz," which became common as various electronic devices were invented to distort the sound. At the time, none of these devices existed, so Davies would mistreat his amp to get the desired sound, often kicking it. The amp was a cheap unit called an Elpico.

Before they released this, The Kinks put out 2 singles that flopped. If this didn't do well, there was a good chance their record label would have dropped them.

When the Kinks heard the first version they recorded of this, they hated the results. It was produced by Shel Talmy, their manager at the time, and Ray Davies thought it came out clean and sterile, when he wanted it to capture the energy of their live shows. Dave Davies girlfriend backed them up, saying it didn't make her want to "drop her knickers." The Kinks' record company had no interest in letting them re-record this, but due to a technicality in their contract, The Kinks were able to withhold the song until they could do it again. At the second session, Dave Davies slashed his amp and Talmy produced it to get the desired live sound. This is the version that was released.

This was the first hit for The Kinks. It gave them a lot of publicity and led to TV appearances, magazine covers, and 2 gigs opening for The Beatles. They didn't have an album out yet, so they rushed one out to capitalize on the demand. This first album contained only 5 originals, with the rest being R&B covers.

Ray Davies recalled in an interview with NME how his brother Dave created the distortion effect on this song. Said Ray: "We stuck knitting needles in the speakers, or in Dave's case, he slit the speakers with a razor blade. In those days we played records on a radiogram so loudly that they all sounded fuzzy. We thought, 'That's a great sound,' without realizing the speakers were buggered. Everyone else was using really clean guitar sounds, so for 'You Really Got Me' we hooked a little speaker up to a clean amp and came up with thunderous, unaffected, pure power."

Ray Davies told The NME that the Van Halen version of this tune is his favorite Kinks cover. He explained: "It was a big hit for them and put them on a career of excess and sent them on the road. So I enjoyed that one."

Also in 1964, Roy Orbison started a three-week run at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with “Oh Pretty Woman.”

In 1967, Gladys Knight And The Pips' "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is released in the US, where it will top out at #2.

Brian Jones (Rolling Stones) was fined $150 for possession of marijuana in 1968.

Abbey Road was released was released by the Beatles on September 26th, 1969 in the United Kingdom and 1 October 1969 in the United States. The album cover, showing the band crossing the street, will become one of the most imitated in recording history. The zebra crossing itself has become so popular with Beatle fans, it has its own webcam.

Abbey Road is widely regarded as one of The Beatles' most tightly constructed albums, although the band was barely operating as a functioning unit at the time. Rolling Stone placed it at number 14 on its list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". In 2009, readers of the magazine also named Abbey Road the greatest Beatles album.

Abbey Road became one of the most successful Beatles albums ever. In the UK the album debuted straight at number 1. Abbey Road spent its first 11 weeks in the UK charts at number 1, before being displaced to number 2 for one week by the Rolling Stones debuting at the top with Let It Bleed. However, the following week—which was the week of Christmas—Abbey Road returned to the top for another 6 weeks, completing 17 weeks at the top. In all it spent 92 weeks inside the UK Top 75.

Reaction in the US was similar. The album debuted at number 178, then moved to number 4 and in its third week to number 1, spending 11 non-consecutive weeks at the top. Abbey Road spent a total of 129 weeks in the Billboard 200, re-entering the chart at number 69 on 14 November 1987 when it was released for the first time on CD. Abbey Road was certified 12x platinum by the RIAA in 2001. This was also the first Beatles' album to reach the 10-million mark in worldwide sales.

It was the final studio recordings from the group and featured two George Harrison songs “Something” and “Here Comes the Sun” plus “Come Together,” “Sun King'”and “Golden Slumbers.”

The Fillmore West opened in San Francisco, CA in 1969.

In 1970, Tamla-Motown Records announced that the Jackson 5 had sold 10 million singles world wide in nine months.

In 1974, 'Walls and Bridges' was released by John Lennon. He would not release any more new material for almost 6 years.

In 1975, the Rocky Horror Picture Show" opened in theaters.

In 1976, Boulder, Colorado's Firefall saw their song "You Are The Woman" enter the Billboard chart on its way to #9. They would place five more songs in the Top 40, including "Just Remember I Love You" (#11 in 1977) and "Strange Way" (#11 in 1978).

In 1979, the Clash released their first US single. It was their remake of Bobby Fuller Four's "I Fought The Law."

The Prince song "Purple Rain" was released in 1984.

In 1987, the Grateful Dead's "Touch Of Grey" peaks at #9 on the US singles chart, becoming their only Billboard chart hit.

In 1989, Paul McCartney opened his Get Back tour in Dramen, Norway. It is the first tour where he plays many of his and John Lennon's Beatles songs.

In 1992, Nirvana appeared at the Castaic Lake Amphitheatre, Castaic, California.

In 1997, the initial 300,000-unit shipment of Elton John's "Candle In The Wind 1997" sold out in Japan on its first day of release.

In 1998, MTV Russia premiered with the program Prodigy Live in Moscow.

In 2003, Robert Palmer, who reached number 14 in the US in 1979 with "Bad Case Of Loving You", died of a heart attack at the age of 54. He found success both in his solo career and in the supergroup Power Station, and had Top 10 songs in both the US and the UK.

birthdays today (among others) Bryan Ferry (66), Olivia Newton-John (63), Cesar Rosas (Los Lobos) (57), Tracey Thorn (Everything But the Girl) (49) and the late Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon) was born in 1967 (died 1995)

The explosion of Elvis Presley's career on RCA Records during the 12 months of 1956 was a wondrous evolution. By the end of that fateful year, the rockabilly singer from Memphis, would be the most famous person in the world. How did it happen? In one word: music. '.My pelvis had nothin' to do with what I do,' Elvis said in 1956. ' just get kinda in rhythm with the music, I jump around to it because I enjoy what I'm doin', I'm not tryin' to be vulgar, I'm not tryin' to sell any sex, I'm not tryin' to look vulgar and nasty. I just enjoy what I'm doin' and tryin' to make the best of it' The rest, of course, is history. Ten million singles sold, three million EPs, and 800,000 LPs' worth, in just that first year. 1956.

The five CDs comprise the following, all material originating in 1956:

• CD Five, The Interviews: The Paul Wilder interview, plus his interviews with Colonel Parker and Oscar Davis; plus two segments of Elvis' rarely heard candid monologue, 'The Truth About Me,' and two advertisements for RCA Victrolas.

Over the course of CD One and Two, Young Man With the Big Beat compiles Elvis Presley's complete 1956 masters. The year was fueled by a run of hits that kept radio well-stocked: 'Heartbreak Hotel,' ' Was The One,' 'Blue Suede Shoes,' 'Money Honey,' ' Want You, I Need You, I Love You,' 'My Baby Left Me,' 'Don't Be Cruel,' 'Hound Dog,' and 'Love Me Tender' topping the list.

In addition to the master takes, outtakes, and live performances heard on CDs One through Four of Young Man with the Big Beat, there is also the most extensive collection of audio spoken word material ever included on an RCA release. These extended and rare interviews are previously unreleased by RCA Records. The first of these segments, at the end of CD Four, is the complete Elvis interview by Robert Brown that took place at the Warwick Hotel in New York City on March 24th.

CD Five then presents:

'Young Man with the Big Beat' will feature one of the most extraordinary books every created at Sony. The focal point of the book, spread across its 80 pages, will be a unique, meticulously-researched, day-by-day chronology of Elvis' iconic year, including every concert, every recording date, every television appearance, personal events in Elvis' life, and much more. A dazzling photo array of memorabilia will illustrate each day and entry. Concert ticket stubs, RCA memoranda, letters from fans, postcards from Elvis to his family, tour itineraries, magazine covers and articles, trade charts, fan club relics, RCA publicity photos, concert photos, candid photos, and more will be a feast for the eyes and the imagination as 1956 unfolds. The book was assembled by Elvis expert Roger Semon.

'Young Man with a Big Beat' will also include five rare 8x10 photographs (suitable for framing), five original-size poster replicas, and a replica concert ticket stub. Young Man with the Big Beat was produced for reissue by Ernst Mikael Jørgensen, the respected director of RCA's Elvis catalog for over two decades.

After nearly a year and a half of studio recording and singles releases on Sun Records of Memphis, Elvis Presley's recording contract was sold to RCA Records on November 21, 1955. Elvis arrived at RCA Studios in Nashville on January 10, 1956, with his band, guitarist Scotty Moore, bassist Bill Black, and D.J. Fontana on drums. It was the beginning of an odyssey that would not only transform the lives of Elvis and his buddies, but would also reshape the face of popular music, entertainment television, radio, concert promotion, movie production and more in America and around the world.
From the master takes recorded at those January 10th sessions, 'Heartbreak Hotel' (inducted into the Grammy® Hall Of Fame) and ' Was the One,' to the Million Dollar Quartet jam session back home in Memphis on December 4th, it was a year in music that will never be equalled.

Beatles Photographer Robert Whitaker Dies

Robert Whitaker, the legendary photographer who snapped many of the most iconic images from the early part of the Beatles' career, has died on Tuesday after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 72.

On his arrival in England in August 1964, Whitaker set to work photographing the members of the NEMS stable including Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, Gerry & The Pacemakers (including cover shots for their How Do You Like It and Ferry Across The Mersey LPs). He also did several photographs of the hugely successful Australian folk-pop group The Seekers.

However, it was with the Beatles and especially the late John Lennon, with whom he became close friends and that which Whitaker would create his most famous and enduring work. One of his first assignments was photographing the Beatles during their second American tour, including the historic Shea Stadium concert in New York. He spent the next two years travelling with the Beatles and shooting them at work, at rest and at play—on their tours, at home, in the recording studio, during private moments, and in formal photo-sessions. His photos from this period include the portraits that were used to form the Klaus Voorman collage-illustration on the cover of the group's landmark 1966 LP Revolver, and a series of group portraits taken while the group was making promotional films for the singles "Rain" and "Paperback Writer" in Chiswick Park, London in 1966, including the famous "Way Out" portrait of George Harrison.

Whitaker also photographed the notorious 'butcher cover' in a photo session on March 25, 1966, which was originally intended for photos to promote their single "Rain"/"Paperback Writer." The images of the Beatles wearing white coats and holding dismembered doll parts, and slabs of meat caused a media storm when the image was used on the cover of the Beatles' "Yesterday and Today" album. The album was withdrawn from sale and the picture replaced with a more traditional photo of the band. It remains one of the most collected pieces of Beatles vinyl. He also shot the cover of the Revolver album which is considered a textbook album photo.

With almost unlimited access to the most famous and popular band in the world, Whitaker quickly became a key figure of the London underground scene, capturing "the creativity and excess of London in the sixties". He has been quoted as saying: "There were about 100 people who ran the Sixties" and he was fortunate enough to meet and photograph virtually all of them.

A legend indeed.

VENOM To Release 'Fallen Angels' In November

VENOM, the hugely influential U.K. outfit now celebrating a full 30 years since the release of its "Welcome To Hell" debut, will have a brand new studio album released on November 28 via Spinefarm Records/Universal. Titled "Fallen Angels" and featuring 13 fresh recordings produced by mainman/bassist Conrad "Cronos" Lant, this is the follow-up to 2008's "Hell" release, and sees the trio (completed by guitarist Rage and drummer Dante) adopting a style highly redolent of classic early VENOM with modern studio technology employed only to increase the general level of nastiness.

The first limited edition pressing of "Fallen Angels" will come with two bonus tracks, "Annunaki Legacy" and "Blackened Blues". Prior to the album's release, on October 31, a double-A side single, "Hammerhead" / "Hail Satanas", will be made available on 12-inch vinyl and digital download, also through Spinefarm/Universal.

R.E.M. R.I.P.: Thank You for Running it Into the Ground

by Rob Sheffield

"Drive," that's the one. I love dozens of songs by R.E.M., but that's the one, even though it took me 7 or 8 years to start liking it. (Most of the other songs on Automatic for the People took about 12 seconds.) Michael Stipe growls to a crowd of kids who may or may not be there, cowering in the dark. Peter Buck's mandolin and Mike Mills' bass count down to doomsday. Tick tock, tick tock. You could complain that "Drive" runs on a little too long, and for that matter, you could complain that R.E.M. did too. But you'd be wrong, because in a way, running on was their whole point.

according to Tom Hamilton, we may see the new LP from aerosmith soon

Aerosmith Working Towards Spring Release

"We're at the point now where Jack [Douglas], our producer, and our engineer, Warren [Huart], are compiling all kinds of stuff from all summer, just taking all the bits and pieces that we recorded for the last two and a half months and assembling it, so we can then go and put more guitars on, and more vocals and whatever else we think [we may need to do]," says Tom.

"I know I have a couple of little things to do before I'm done, but I'm mostly finished and I'm looking forward to the whole thing being put together and the vocals going on," he continues. "Next spring, baby — that's what we want. I know you've been waiting a long time; we've been waiting. We're excited. A lot of people that we know and trust who have come and heard what we're working on think we're doing something really cool. So I hope you'll think the same thing."

Aerosmith continues to work on their 14th studio album, their first since 2004.

Last Collector Standing

DJ Needles On Growing Up With Vinyl And His Gold Records

By Jon Scorfina

On the verge of the release of the RFT "Best of St. Louis" 2011 issue, Last Collector Standing decided to meet with last year's winner for "Best Club DJ," DJ Needles, to discuss what it takes to make a great DJ. Of course, vinyl was involved. Needles (a.k.a. Nodzill, a.k.a. James Gate) is the son of legendary St. Louis radio DJ James Gates Sr. Over the last decade, however, DJ Needles has made quite a name for himself around town on his own accord. We met at his Dogtown apartment, filled to the ceiling with records, where Needles reflected about his career as a DJ: A career that has earned him two honorary gold records and the opportunity to perform with Digable Planets' Ladybug Mecca.

Pink Floyd Create New 'Animals' Album Pig After Original Porker Popped

Ahead of promotional stunt...

by Jason Gregory

Pink Floyd have commissioned a new flying pig after the original cover star of their 'Animals' album popped ahead of an attempt to re-create the artwork.

The original inflatable pig was shown flying over London's Battersea Power Station on the front of the 1976 release.

The band's record label are set to re-shoot the cover on Monday (September 26) as part of a promotional stunt, but discovered earlier this month that the original pig had become damaged.

and in music history for today, september 23rd:

The iconic Ray Charles was born in 1930 (died 2004).

Hank Williams did his last recording session in 1952.

In 1953, the Spaniels record "Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight", which will reach the US top 30 next year despite competition from a Pop-style, Gold record version by the McGuire Sisters. The song became well known again in the late 1970s as the closing song performed by Sha Na Na on their weekly variety show as well as its appearance in American Graffiti and again in the late 1980s after its use in the hit film Three Men and a Baby.

In 1957, Buddy Holly and The Crickets scored their only US number one hit with their first Billboard chart maker, "That'll Be the Day". Holly would later reach the Top Ten with "Peggy Sue" and "Oh, Boy!" and crack the Top 20 with "Maybe Baby" and "It Doesn't Matter Anymore".

"People Are Strange" was released by the Doors in 1957.

In 1967, 16 year old Alex Chilton led The Box Tops to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 with "The Letter". In the UK, it reached #5. The record would go on to sell over four million copies and receive two Grammy nominations for Best Contemporary Group Performance and Best Performance By A Vocal Group, although they lost both to The Fifth Dimension. As for the song, "The Letter", it's come back twice since the Box Tops' version. It was a Top Twenty hit for a group called The Arbours in 1969 and a Top Ten song for Joe Cocker in 1970.

In 1967, the Mothers of Invention played live for the first time in the U.K. At Royal Albert Hall in London.

In 1967, the Strawberry Alarm Clock perform "Incense and Peppermints" on American Bandstand, pushing it further up the US charts on its way to number one.

In 1967, the song "To Sir with Love" by Lulu, from the film of the same name, entered the Billboard Hot 100 where it eventually reached #1. The record wasn't promoted in Britain and didn't make the UK chart.

Mott The Hoople released "All The Young Dudes" in 1972

Also in 1972, after a string of TV and Las Vegas stage shows had made him famous, Mac Davis achieves his only US chart topper with "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me". It made #29 in the UK. Mac would go on to have three more Top 40 hits over the next two years and starred in his own weekly TV show on NBC from '74 to '76 before enjoying further success in Country music.

In 1974, The drummer for the Average White Band, 24 year old Robbie McIntosh is found dead in his North Hollywood hotel room. He died of a heroin overdose after he inhaled a white powder thought to be cocaine but was actually pure heroin.

Also in 1974, Elvis Presley goes on a $100,000 shopping spree in Memphis and buys six Lincoln Continentals and five Cadillacs and distributes them among his friends.

Foreigner released their second album Double Vision' in 1980.

In 1980, 35 year old Bob Marley collapses on stage at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh. He will be flown to the Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York where he is diagnosed with a brain tumor and told he has just one month to live, although he will actually survive until next May. The rest of his tour is canceled.

In 1997, MCA Records reissued Average White Band's label debut "Show Your Hand" as part of the band's 25th anniversary.

In 1997, Elton John's single "Candle in the Wind" was released in the U.S.

In 2009, 14 re-mastered Beatles albums and boxed sets sold more than 2.25 million copies during the first five days they were on sale in North America, Japan and the UK, prompting EMI Music CEO Elio Leoni-Sceti to declare that "Beatlemania has returned."

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

It's Not The End Of The World For R.E.M.

They Remain Friends And Brothers Even Though They Disband

R.E.M. have recently announced via their website that after 30 years together, they have decided to “call it a day as a band.”

Their extraordinary run through rock and roll history as one of the seminal bands in the alternative rock genre and subsequent place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be a testament to their efforts and fan base.

R.E.M. first came together in 1980 with Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry. Their first few releases were not big hits but right from the start, with the 1981 single "Radio Free Europe" and the 1982 EP 'Chronic Town,' they were able to build a solid reputation among music fans and college radio. The Grammy-winning group, now composed of Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills, released its debut album 'Murmur' in 1983 and that LP, along with millions of college students who fell in love with their sound, put the group on the map. Rolling Stone called it the best album of the year (over titans like Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and Sting's 'Synchronicity') and it topped out at number 36 in the US. They continued to build their fan base over the next four years leading up to 'Document,' their first solid hit album which reached number 10.

For the balance of their career, R.E.M.'s albums sold solidly including chart toppers 'Out of Time' (1991) and 'Monster' (1994) on the strength of such hits as "The One I Love" (1987 #9), "Stand" (1988 #6), "Losing My Religion" (1991 #4), "Man on the Moon" (1992 #30) and the haunting vocals from Stipe with "Everybody Hurts" (1993 #29). The band's videos also became staples on MTV in the 1990s, including the eye-catching "Losing My Religion" and the stark "Everybody Hurts," which had Stipe walking through a highway traffic jam. When they lost some of their luster in the US, Europe quickly embraced the band from Athens, Georgia and Stipe's well crafted songs that were atypical of the standard rock fare.

In their own words: The guys shared their thoughts on ending the band.

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.

MIKE

"During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'what next'? Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.

"We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love, and respect, each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this--there's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."

MICHAEL

"A wise man once said--'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it.

"I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way.

"We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years; our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It's been amazing."

PETER

"One of the things that was always so great about being in R.E.M. was the fact that the records and the songs we wrote meant as much to our fans as they did to us. It was, and still is, important to us to do right by you. Being a part of your lives has been an unbelievable gift. Thank you.

"Mike, Michael, Bill, Bertis, and I walk away as great friends. I know I will be seeing them in the future, just as I know I will be seeing everyone who has followed us and supported us through the years. Even if it's only in the vinyl aisle of your local record store, or standing at the back of the club: watching a group of 19 year olds trying to change the world."

AUTUMN Unveil Cover Art and Track Listing for New Album

Dutch heavy rock collective Autumn have announced their new album, 'Cold Comfort', whixh is set to be released November 8th via Metal Blade Records! This is the band's fifth full-length effort and their third for Metal Blade Records and offers a collection of striking songs blended into a diverse and yet surprisingly compact album, one that Autumn considers to be their most personal and meaningful to date.

While Autumn's roots remain firmly planted in heavy rock/guitar-oriented soil, their branches are stretching out to more progressive musical genres and alternative approaches to the sound of individual songs. Guitarist Jens van der Valk elaborates: "In terms of sound we realized there were still leaps to be taken out of our comfort zone and into unthought-of possibilities. As a first step in the right direction, our main focus was on a more open, transparent sound, one through which the often multi-layered nature of our songs would be optimally channeled."

Erik-Jan Dodd, Autumn 's live sound engineer since the 'My New Time' era, envisioned a more vintage approach for 'Cold Comfort'. An experiment the band was all too eager to embrace, explains guitarist Mats van der Valk. "If there's anyone who knows what we're all about and more importantly: what we could potentially be all about, it's E-J." '

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On September 20, 2011 Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) will release Mike Oldfield's Incantation - Expanded Edition (1 CD), Thin Lizzy's Bad Reputation - Expanded Edition (1 CD), Sandy Denny's classic solo debut North Star Grassman and The Ravens - Deluxe Edition (2 CDs) and the 4-CD career retrospective box set on Jim Capaldi, Dear Mr. Fantasy: The Jim Capaldi Story. All music has been remastered with bonus material.

Mike Oldfield's Incantation - Expanded Edition (1CD)

The music of Mike Oldfield is some of the most spiritual, ethereal, reflective and sensual in rock. Oldfield himself created his own genre with his groundbreaking 1973 debut, Tubular Bells, and has continued to craft highly individual works to this day, building him a worldwide loyal following. Since Oldfield's catalog moved to Mercury in 2008, Universal has been working closely with him to ensure the highest standard in revisiting his masterworks from the '70s and '80s.

Originally released in November 1978, Incantations was Oldfield's first and only studio double album comprised of four parts of the title track. It is a masterpiece of minimalism, with Oldfield playing many of the instruments with old friends including David Bedford conducting the choir and orchestra, Pierre Moerlen on drums and Oldfield's sister Sally on vocals. Overseen by Oldfield, the expanded version of this masterpiece is fully remastered complete with artwork and extensive liner notes. As an added bonus, Incantations – Expanded Edition includes the track "Guilty," Oldfield's legendary 1979 single recorded in New York City at the height of the disco movement.

Mike Oldfield is an artist like no other. Over the last 37 years he has produced timeless, unique and inspirational music that has enthralled listeners the world over.

TRACKLIST
1. Incantations Part One (Remastered Stereo Mix)
2. Incantations Part Two (Remastered Stereo Mix)
3. Incantations Part Three (Remastered Stereo Mix)
4. Incantations Part Four (Remastered Stereo Mix)
5. Guilty (7" Single Version)

Thin Lizzy – Bad Reputation - Expanded Edition (1 CD)

Charged by the creative force of the late Phil Lynott, the legendary Irish hard-rock band Thin Lizzy combined working class romanticism and Irish folk law with piercing dual-guitar lines. Like artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, Lynott was a poet of the downtrodden who helped break down racial stereotypes in rock and became one of the most influential front men in hard rock and heavy metal.

Originally released in 1977, Bad Reputation is Thin Lizzy's eighth studio album that found them teamed up with legendary producer Tony Visconti who gave them a leaner and tougher sound, creating an album that rivals Jailbreak as their best studio album. It went to No. 4 in the U.K. and featured the hit "Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me In Its Spotlight)" which reached No. 14 on the U.K. singles chart in September 1977. Fully remastered, Bad Reputation features the unreleased bonus tracks "Killer Without A Cause," "That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart," "Bad Reputation" and "Dancing In The Moonlight (It's Caught Me In A Spotlight)" taken from a session recorded for the BBC, plus a soundcheck of "Me And The Boys."

There are bands that soundtrack a moment in time and then fade away ingloriously. Then there are those that, long after their demise, retain a sense of immortality. Thin Lizzy lie firmly in the latter camp.

Sandy Denny - North Star Grassman and The Ravens (Deluxe Edition)

Sandy Denny is considered a founder of the British folk rock movement and perhaps its most important female singer, songwriter and personality. She is remembered for her pivotal involvement with the British folk rock scene, where, as a member of Fairport Convention, she moved the band away from west coast American cover versions and into performing traditional material and original compositions.

Sandy is also remembered as a composer, most notably on her solo albums, which represent her claim to be Britain's finest female singer-songwriter whose smooth vocal delivery still sets the standard for many of today's female folk-based singers.

Sandy Denny's 1971 debut solo album, North Star Grassman and The Ravens, has now been expanded to 2 CDs and given the Deluxe treatment with rarities, unreleased tracks and a 16- page booklet with unseen photographs. Charleston Record Expo Returns this Weekend

CHARLESTON - Want to replace your mother's cherished Elvis LP you "accidentially" smashed as a kid? Perhaps you feel digital recording can't capture the warmth and feeling present on a vinyl record. Or maybe you just inherited a family member's old turntable and want to try it out.

On Saturday West Ashley Shoppes Center is the place for you. Monster Music will be hosting its second 2011 Charleston Record Expo 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the open storefront next to World Market with 14 vendors selling thousands of LPs, 7"s, 45s and other related items.

"Record conventions held for and by buyers and collectors have been going on for ages," Monster Music District Manager Galen Hudson said. "They were really popular in the 70s and 80s, but kind of went away somewhat when CDs took off."

Mark 'Nevermind' milestone with 'baby' from album cover

Spencer Elden recreating the 'Nevermind' album cover

On Sept. 24, 1991 Nirvana’s new album Nevermind' set the tone for a decade of music. Alternative rock became the mainstream and the band’s frontman, Kurt Cobain, was labeled the voice of a generation.

Friday night, the Bombay Bicycle Club will celebrate the album’s release with an art show and concert. From 6-9 p.m. the bar will host a pre-party and art show with special guest Spencer Elden. Elden was just 3 months old when he posed for the album cover of “Nevermind.” The photo of a naked baby swimming in a pool with a dollar bill dangling in front of him became one of the more widely known and parodied images of the decade. Now 20, Elden is interning at Shepard Fairey’s Obey Giant studio and has designed a special poster for this show.

Doug Dillard and Gene Clark - The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark LP

LP 5344 (vinyl) | $18.98

Groundbreaking album that helped define country-rock!

In 1965 Missouri-born Gene Clark was riding the crest of unprecedented success and adulation as a member of the Byrds. Anointed as America’s answer to the Beatles, the Byrds topped the charts with folk-rock anthems like “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Turn! Turn! Turn!” and “Eight Miles High.” Gene was front and center as tambourine player, singer and principal songwriter for the group. But in early 1966 he flew the Byrds’ coop. A gifted songwriter, expectations ran high for a stellar solo career, but those hopes were dashed when his debut solo album and single both failed to chart. Dropped by Columbia Records the following year, Gene’s career remained in limbo until teaming up with banjo player extraordinaire Doug Dillard.

What emerged from a series of informal jam sessions in and around Laurel Canyon was a loose-knit group of pickers seeking to break bluegrass music out of its traditional confines and redefine it in a contemporary country-rock context. The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark is a groundbreaking album that helped define country-rock and set the template not only for that genre but the entire alt.country, Americana and Roots Rock movements of the ’90s. Together with future Eagle Bernie Leadon, who co-wrote “Train Leaves Here This Morning” with Gene (featured both on the Fantastic Expedition album and later on the Eagles’ debut release), the Dillard & Clark merger represents a high-water mark in Gene Clark’s impressive canon of recordings and one of the most satisfying periods in his often troubled career.

The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark ranks among a handful of seminal 1960s country-rock experiments. “I think we made our mark in country rock,” muses Doug Dillard. “We didn’t make the charts but we sure influenced a lot of people.” To insure that their influence carries on, Sundazed proudly presents this newly mastered edition, sourced from the original A&M analog tapes, available on resonant vinyl and compact disc and packaged in a vibrant recreation of the original cover artwork. CD includes extra photos and new liner notes by Gene Clark biographer John Einarson. It’s an expedition you’ll want to take time and time again!

TRACK LIST:
1. Out on the Side
2. She Darked the Sun
3. Don’t Come Rollin’
4. Train Leaves Here This Mornin’
5. With Care from Someone
6. The Radio Song
7. Git It on Brother (Git It in Line Brother)
8. In the Plan
9. Something’s Wrong
