New Vinyl Record and Music Releases - November 8, 2011

Tons of new music releases this week (expect a heavy doses of new releases for the next month with the holiday season rearing it's ugly head) and that includes several vinyl record releases including Royal Trux with a triple LP set called 'Singles, Live, Unreleased, Rush's 'Time Machine 2011: Live in Cleveland,' Deep Purple's 'Made in Europe,' the Misfits' 'Land of the Dead,' Owen with 'Ghost Town,' James Blake's 'Enough Thunder,' Brian Eno's 'Panic Of Looking' and Florence and the Machine's 'Ceremonials;' just to name a few.

The CVR Blog is also recommending a couple of releases from Kurt Vile as well as releases from Black Belles, the Damned, Aeroplane, Throbbing Gristle, Band of Bees, Sea Lions, the Cars, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple reissues and we even have a Willie Nelson reissue!

R. Crumb on Album Covers, Charlie Patton 78s, and Occupy Wall Street

Don't go bothering Robert Crumb. The renowned cartoonist and American expat lives somewhere in the south of France, but when I call him to talk about his latest book, he steadfastly refuses to tell me where: "I don't want people coming here looking for me," he says, "so I don't tell the name of this town." He won't elaborate on whom he might be hiding from, but it's easy to believe that Crumb, 68, has a cult following. Over his nearly lifelong career, this icon of 1960s underground comics has created beloved characters like Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural, was the subject of a Terry Zwigoff documentary, and even illustrated the book of Genesis. ("First I was gonna make a satire," he told me. "But the original text is so strange by itself you don't have to satirize it.") In 1991, Crumb was inducted into the prestigious Will Eisner Hall of Fame. Maus creator Art Spiegelman has called him "a monolithic presence, who rewrote the rules of what comics are."

But behind the overt sexuality and anti-establishment riffs that characterize Crumb's comics, his muse has always been old-timey American blues. He's a die-hard collector of 78 rpm records from the likes of Memphis Minnie and Robert Johnson.

Metallica’s Black Album Commands Top Dollar In Auction

Metallica‘s self-titled 'Black Album,' which was pressed on white vinyl, recently sold on an eBay auction (Oct. 31) for $1,145.00. This very rare copy was one of 50 produced and released in March 2010 by Warner Bros. Records. The record was only available as a special offer through the band’s Met Club fan club and Warner’s Because Sound Matters promotional campaign.

Throbbing Gristle Reissues

Throbbing Gristle and Industrial Records will release the discs over the coming weeks. The first release, 1977's 'The Second Annual Report of Throbbing Gristle,' was released on October 31st. From there, in one-week intervals, the band will re-release 'D.O.A.: The Third and Final Report of Throbbing Gristle' (1978),' 20 Jazz Funk Greats' (1979), the live album 'Heathen Earth' (1980) and Throbbing Gristle's 'Greatest Hits' (1981). Each album was restored and remastered by band member Chris Carter, who transferred the material from the original analogue tapes.

Vinyl editions of the albums will be available in limited-edition pressings of 2,000 and will feature an eight-page large-format colour booklet featuring a trove of Throbbing Gristle-related art. The CDs will be presented in gatefold format, featuring different artwork than their vinyl counterparts and include a bonus disc containing rare Throbbing Gristle tunes, as well as live tracks and singles from the year of each album's original release.

Passion for vinyl is spreading to a new generation of music lovers

Unlike baby boomers who grew up with turntables, tuners, woofers and tweeters that even had Black Betty bam-a-lamming, Craig Detert, now 38, had discs of polycarbonate plastic.

But his life soon would change all because of a woman.

"At the time, there were a bunch of records at my house; I was like 18 years old," he said. "My girlfriend — my wife now — and I were just hanging out in the basement. I had a stereo system that had a record player on it, but I never used it. She was like, 'What are all these records doing here?' I was like, 'They're my parents.'"

So the two grabbed a stack of 45s and started playing them, and, by gosh, it was fun. "We just went crazy after that," said Detert, who took a new spin around an old block and never has looked back. He also turned his passion into a position as manager of the Appleton-based Music & Sports Collectors World, owned by John Kennedy.

British rock legends UFO are currently in the studio with producer Tommy Newton recording their new album for a February 27, 2012 release via SPV/Steamhammer. A tour of the U.K. and Ireland will follow in March and April. UFO's latest best-of collection, "Best Of A Decade", was released in North America on September 28, 2010 via SPV/Steamhammer.

Girls Announce New Single 

Girls have announced a new single called, "Lawrence," which is out November 28 in the UK and December 6 in the US. The song was "written and recorded as a gift to Lawrence Hayward," frontman for the cult band Felt, Denim, and Go-Kart Mozart. It will be released digitally and on limited edition, heart-shaped red vinyl via Turnstile and True Panther Sounds.

In 1961, Ray Charles was arrested in Indianapolis after police discover marijuana and heroin in his hotel room.

In 1964, the Marvelettes' "Too Many Fish in the Sea" enters the Billboard Hot 100 where it will reach #25. The song will be the fifth of the group's ten US Top 40 Pop hits.

In 1968, in Denver, Jim Morrison simply asked the crowd to “stand up” during a Doors concert. That was enough for the authorities to ban the group from ever playing again in the city.

In 1970, MGM Records President Mike Curb announces that the company is dropping 18 acts from its roster in a move to discredit musicians who "exploit and promote hard drugs through music." Among the acts dropped are Connie Francis, and The Cowsills, but not Eric Burdon.

In 1974, Rolling Stone reports that Ted Nugent has won the National Squirrel-Shooting Archery Contest by picking off a squirrel at 150 yards. Nugent also wiped out 27 more of the small mammals with a handgun during the three day event.

In 1975, a guitar player named Steve Anderson set a new world record for continuous guitar string plucking at 114 hours 17 minutes. why?

In 1981, Daryl Hall and John Oates achieved their third US number one single with "Private Eyes". Over the next three years, they would have three more. "Private Eyes" reached #32 in the UK.

In 1987, a sixteen year old singer named Tiffany had the top tune in the US with a cover version of Tommy James' 1967 hit, "I Think We're Alone Now". His rendition stalled at number four. Tiffany became the youngest act to score a US #1 since a 14-year-old Michael Jackson with did it with "Ben" in 1972.

In 1988, John Fogerty won his self-plagiarism court battle with Fantasy Records. The label claimed Fogerty copied his own song, "Run Through The Jungle" when he wrote "The Old Man Down The Road".

In 1991, Carter Cornelius of The Cornelius Brothers And Sister Rose died of a heart attack at the age of 43. Their biggest hits were "Too Late To Turn Back Now" and "Treat Her Like A Lady".



Also in 1991, Frank Zappa was diagnosed with prostate cancer

In 1995, Alice in Chains released "Alice in Chains" on CD and cassette. The album was only available in a vinyl edition until this release.

In 2002, a Guns N' Roses show in Vancouver was canceled after Axl Roses plane was delayed. A riot ensued where twelve people were arrested.

In 2004, Lenny Mays of The Dramatics passed away of heart failure at the age of 53. The group cracked the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971 with "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" and again in 1972 with "In The Rain".

In 2006, the game "Guitar Hero II" for Playstation 2 was released in North America.

In 2007, the Eagles' first studio album in 28 years, "Long Road Out Of Eden", rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 200 chart after selling 711,000 copies in the US during its first week of release. The LP produced two singles on the Hot Country Songs charts: a cover of J.D. Souther's "How Long" and "Busy Being Fabulous", both of which were Top 30 hits on the Country charts as well as Top 20 hits on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts.

Re-Charged Simon Scores

After a series of albums that tried too hard to advance the cause and so seemed self-consciously so, Paul Simon has produced his best since Graceland. The album title explains how he's managed. It celebrates the significant but demolishes it at the same time.

Again he's called on world musical roots and other branches to energize his compositions, but as in Graceland, the cores are sufficiently strong to sustain the weights of the add-on accouterments.

For instance on "Dazzling Blue" he adds a tabla and some rhythmic vocalizing you may have heard from Ravi Shankar but these are merely accents to a highly melodic, harmony drenched construction that's as attractive as anything found on Graceland or Rhythm of the Saints.

The opener, "Getting Ready For Christmas Day" takes its cue from a recorded sermon on Okeh records by Reverend J.M. Gates. It's a song about mortality that casts life in stark ephemeral terms using the run up to Christmas sung by Simon with the dark inevitable sermon from Gates.

"Rewrite" is about turning a life around using a script metaphor. "Love and Hard Times," perhaps the album's highlight, is among Simon's most intense and personal love songs that begins with a visit from God and Jesus who decide to not stay long, leaving "love and hard times." Whereas on "Hearts and Bones" he plays the observer of his own love affair (then with Carrie Fisher), on this song he makes it far more personal.

Simon's melodic gift isn't what it one was—or he's purposely chosen a more linear tack—though there are some glints of it, but that's more than made up for by his poetic gifts, which have never been more subtle and sublime.

The parts are good enough without them adding up to more than the whole, but they consistently manage that and combined with the music, which does the same, it produces a provocative, powerful package filled with beauty, wonder and mystery that has the weight and staying power of his greatest albums.

The sonics are strictly high resolution Pro-Tools so don't expect Roy Halee-like warmth and beauty, but this is a different time and the recording quality is very good. Dynamics are preserved, the stage is reasonably spacious and very well organized. The edginess is modern and kept to a minimum, but the textures are skeletal as are the images, which are lit with sonic neon.

Simon's voice is hollowed out and has a bit of ice attached and the sibilants can be etchy. You've heard much better, but trust me, you've heard a lot worse and with Phil Ramone mixing, it's put together with the same subtlety as the musical and poetic compositions.

Louisville’s ear X-tacy has closed up shop after 26 years of service. President of ear X-tacy, John Timmons, issued this statement regarding the end of his business earlier today:

Dear Louisville, and all who have shopped, supported, and loved ear X-tacy over the years,

It has been a dream come true…actually, a dream exceeded, to be part of your musical lives here in Louisville for the last 26 years. My life was changed forever, and guided by the power of music since I can remember. Music has been the soul, the heart, the passion of my life for my entire 56 years. The record store experience has been the only child in my life. Now, it’s time for me to let it fly.

Thank YOU…for allowing me to be part of your musical universe. Louisville, you made me feel like I was truly HOME when I moved here in 1976. It’s been a great ride, but as George Harrison knowingly said, “All Things Must Pass.” It’s with sadness, but also with great pride I say to you now…

On its release in 1975 Wish You Were here topped the album charts in both the UK and the US. Reflecting the band's thoughts of the time on the music business, and exploring themes of absence, Wish You Were Here contains the classic cut Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a tribute to founder member Syd Barrett.

Since 1967 Pink Floyd have produced one of the most outstanding and enduring catalogues in the history of recorded music. The albums have been painstakingly remastered by James Guthrie (co-producer of The Wall). Artwork designed by long-time artwork collaborator Storm Thorgerson. As a part of their "Why Pink Floyd?" campaign, EMI has chosen to release three titles on collector's vinyl LP (throughout the year 2011 and into early 2012) including The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. In 1966, the Monkees went to #1 on US singles chart with “Last Train To Clarksville,” the group's first #1.



In 1967, Kenny Rogers and The First Edition make their TV debut on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Over the next three years, they will place seven songs on the Billboard Top 40 and have their own TV show in the Fall of 1971.

Also in 1967, 2,000 people attended an auction of Elvis Presley's personal belongings at his Circle G Ranch in Horn Lake, Mississippi, ten miles from Graceland.

In 1971, Elvis Presley kicked off a 15-date North American tour at the Metropolitan Sports Center in Minneapolis. Announcer Al Dvorin uttered what would become a well-known phrase: "Elvis has left the building" at the end of the show. He was asked to make the announcement in an effort to quiet the fans that continued to call for an encore.

In 1977, the manager of the Virgin record store in Nottingham, England was arrested for displaying large poster advertising the new Sex Pistols album, Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols. High street stores banned the album after police warned they could be fined under the 1898 indecent advertising act.

In 1986, Bobby Nunn, vocalist for the Coasters on their 1958 hit, "Yakety Yak", died of a heart attack at the age of 61.

In 1988, the Beach Boys had the number one record in the US when "Kokomo", from the movie Cocktail, reached the top. It made #25 in the UK. It had been 22 years since the group had their last US chart topper with "Good Vibrations". Their only other Top Ten hit in that time had been "Rock and Roll Music" in 1976.

In 1995, Queen released their first studio album since the death of Freddie Mercury. Mercury died November 24, 1991 of AIDS.

In 2002, Billy Guy, who sang baritone on the hits "Searchin'" and "Yakety Yak" as part of the 1950s vocal quartet the Coasters, died in Las Vegas from cardiovascular disease. He was 66.

In 2005, Link Wray, the electric guitar innovator who is often credited as the father of the power chord, died at his home in Copenhagen of natural causes. He was 76. His 1959 instrumental, "Rumble" was banned by many US radio stations, even thought it had no lyrics what so ever. Wray was noted for pioneering a new sound for electric guitars, as exemplified in his hit 1958 instrumental "Rumble", by Link Wray and his Ray Men, which pioneered an overdriven, distorted electric guitar sound. It's aslo said that he "invented the power chord, the major modus operandi of modern rock guitarist, and in doing so fathering," or making possible, "punk and heavy rock". Rolling Stone included Link at number 67 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time

GWAR Guitarist Cory Smoot Found Dead

The lead guitarist for the heavy metal band GWAR was found dead Thursday on the band's tour bus following a concert in Minneapolis, according to the band's manager and record label.

Manager Jack Flanagan and record label Metal Blade said Cory Smoot's body was discovered Thursday before the bus crossed into Canada on the Richmond, Va.-based band's tour. It's unclear what caused Smoot's death or how old he was. A person who answered the phone at the Smoot family residence in Richmond declined to comment. Flanagan and Metal Blade's Kelli Malella, vice president of publicity, said they had no further information to release about Smoot.

Dave Brockie, frontman for the Richmond, Virginia-based group, has issued the following statement:

"It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their longtime guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR's current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long-term plans. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him."

Cory Smoot handled production duties on Gwar's latest two albums "Lust In Space" and "Bloody Pit of Horror." He also owned and operated his own recording studio, Karma Studios, where several of GWAR's albums had been recorded.

NAPALM DEATH: New Album Title, Cover Artwork Unveiled

British/American grindcore pioneers NAPALM DEATH are putting the finishing touches on their 14th studio album (excluding the cover album "Leaders Not Followers"). This new piece of brutality is entitled "Utilitarian", and it will hit stores on February 27 in Europe and February 28 in North America via the band's longtime partner, Century Media Records. The cover artwork (see below) perfectly fits the album's theme and was created by the Danish artist Frode Sylthe, who is also responsible for THE HAUNTED's "rEVOLVEr" artwork.

Original BLACK SABBATH Lineup To Make Mystery Announcement Next Week

The main page of BLACK SABBATH's official web site has updated with the date 11.11.11 (November 11, 2011) below the band's classic logo. All four original members of the legendary heavy metal group — Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums) — will attend a special announcement ceremony that day. Former BLACK FLAG frontman Henry Rollins will host the private event, which will be held at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, California — the same venue where the band made its Los Angeles debut on November 11, 1970 (41 years ago), opening for ALICE COOPER — at exactly 11:11 a.m.

Iommi told U.K.'s Terrorizer magazine that the four original members of BLACK SABBATH recently got together in a rehearsal room for the first time in years, adding, "[We] played some of the old stuff and to be together again was great. We're all on good terms and we're at a stage where we can play together again. It would be good if we could and I suppose it's the closest it's been to be able to do that. It could happen!"

In 1961, Bob Dylan makes his debut at the Carnegie Chapter Hall in New York City. Most of the fifty people in attendance are his friends who paid two bucks to get in. Dylan was paid twenty dollars for the night.

In 1963, the Beatles topped the bill at The Royal Variety Show at The Prince of Wales Theatre, London. With the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret in the audience, this was the night when John Lennon made his famous remark, “For the people in the cheaper seats, clap your hands. And the rest of you, if you’d just rattle your jewelry.” John would later say "I was fantastically nervous, but I wanted to rebel a bit and that was the best I could do."



In 1972, eight weeks after entering the Billboard Hot 100, "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash claims the top spot. It made #5 in the UK.

In 1974, even though he was the one who was the most opposed to touring in the final years of The Beatles, George Harrison became the first to set out on a solo tour when he appeared in Vancouver, Canada with Billy Preston. It will be a troublesome show for him as his voice is ravaged after LP sessions and tour rehearsals. The concert and the rest of the tour played in front of thin crowds.

In 1977, 'The Last Waltz,' the movie of The Band’s final concert, premiered in New York. The Martin Scorsese movie also featured Joni Mitchell, Dr. John, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan.

In 1978, after returning from a two year hiatus, Anne Murray topped the Billboard Hot 100 with the biggest selling single of her career, "You Needed Me". It was her fourth US Top Ten single and made #22 in the UK. Anne would go on to put six more songs on Billboard's Top 40 Pop chart.

In 1978, Boston played their first show in the city of Boston.

In 1984, Prince opened the North American portion of his Purple Rain tour with seven nights at Joe Lewis Arena in Detroit, MI.

In 1991, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Booker T. & The M.G.'s, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, The Isley Brothers, The Yardbirds, and Sam & Dave are elected to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

In 1992, Elton John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin sign a $39 million publishing contract with Warner-Chappell music.

In 1994, Fred Smith, guitarist for the MC5 on their Shock-Rock hit "Kick Out The Jams", died of heart failure at the age of 46.

In 1997, after an 18 month delay, Capitol Records releases The Beach Boys' "The Pet Sounds Sessions", a 4-CD boxed set which details the creation of The Beach Boys' album "Pet Sounds". Overseen by producer Brian Wilson, the collection allows the listener to hear a capella vocals from the master tapes and alternate mixes of the songs.

In 2007, the Eagles went to #1 on the UK album chart for the first time ever with Long Road Out of Eden – 33 years after their debut album On the Border. This was the group’s first full studio album since The Long Run in 1979.
