Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Vinyl Record Sales Up in 2011

Album sales in the United States rose in 2011 for the first time since 2004, partly reflecting cheaper album prices and special offers as well as a booming vinyl market, music industry analysts said Wednesday. For the first time since 2004, overall music sales are up. Album sales grew by 1.4 per cent, to 330.6 million units, in 2011, according to figures published in Billboard magazine, up from 326.2 million units in 2010.

“Now that the final numbers are in, it’s official that the music industry has a significantly positive year in the record books for the first time in seven years,” said Jim Donio, president of music business association NARM, in an email. “This year’s results can be attributed to a variety of influences, including more aggressive marketing efforts and offers, availability and consumer adoption of legitimate digital commerce models, the power of social media, etc.”

The small increase in the world's biggest music market will be welcome news to the industry after years of declining revenues.

"This can partially be due to aggressive pricing of albums in the marketplace, which are being priced a lot more economical for consumers, addressing their concerns that $10 for an album may be too expensive," Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard.com told Reuters.

Vinyl album sales soared to 3.9 million copies, vs. 2.8 million in 2010. Caulfield called the growth in vinyl albums "crazy," attributing it to an "untapped market."

"It's reaching two kinds of consumers – the older consumers who remember vinyls fondly and may even have turntables, and the younger consumers who can have a physical copy in hand and have that artwork to look at," he said.

2011 Top 10 Selling Vinyl Records:

1. Abbey Road - The Beatles
2. Helplessness Blues - Fleet Foxes
3. Bon Iver - Bon Iver
4. Sigh No More - Mumford & Sons
5. King of Limbs - Radiohead
6. 21 - Adele
7. For Emma Forever Ago - Bon Iver
8. Whole Love - Wilco
9. Brothers - Black Keys
10. El Camino - Black Keys

Amazing that the Beatles are still relevant in this day and age, a true testament to their legacy in music history.

Pink Floyd 'Immersion' and 'Experience' Editions of 'The Wall' Including Original Demos and Work-in-Progress Versions

Release Date: February 28, 2012

LONDON, Jan. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- On February 28, EMI will release 'Immersion' and 'Experience' editions of Roger Waters' opus, Pink Floyd 'The Wall,' as the final installment of the recent 'Why Pink Floyd?' reissues and extended releases. 'The Wall' remains Pink Floyd's biggest-selling release after 1973's legendary 'The Dark Side Of The Moon.'

Released in November 1979, 'The Wall' topped the album charts in the US, France, Germany, Sweden and Australia. "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2" – Pink Floyd's first UK single since 1968 – became a Number 1 hit, selling more than one million copies within weeks of its release.

Between 1980 and 1981, Pink Floyd staged 31 performances of The Wall in the US, UK and Germany. It was a spectacular show that included a 40-foot wall, constructed, brick by brick, across the front of the stage during the performance. In 2010 and 2011 Roger Waters toured a new production of The Wall to huge international acclaim. He was joined onstage in May 2011 at London's 02 Arena by guitarist, David Gilmour and drummer, Nick Mason. He continues to tour in the Southern Hemisphere and North America in 2012.

'The Wall' 'Immersion' 7-disc edition includes a DVD featuring a film clip from the 1980 tour and a 'Behind The Wall' documentary, plus, for the first time, CDs of excerpts from Roger Waters' original demos and work-in-progress versions of songs on the final album. Additionally, among these previously unheard versions are David Gilmour's original demos of "Comfortably Numb" and "Run Like Hell." The Immersion set also includes The Wall Live, compiled from the 1980-1981 original tour.

Both 'The Wall' Immersion box set and Experience edition include a rare recording of "Another Brick In The Wall Part 1." A highlight for fans, this demo showcases the evolution of the final track. Additionally, "The Doctor" explores the origins of the landmark track "Comfortably Numb," giving further insight into Pink Floyd's early demo recordings.

Following on from the 'Immersion' and 'Experience' editions of 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' and 'Wish You Were Here,' these new versions of 'The Wall' offer listeners a unique insight into another hugely successful chapter in the Pink Floyd story.

In 1978, after finishing Pink Floyd's Animals stadium tour, Roger Waters devised the concept for the album 'The Wall.' The album is a partly autobiographical story about a fictional rock star named Pink looking back at his early life and reflecting on the nature of fame and success.

Waters presented his band mates David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason with an extensive demo of songs. Pink Floyd recorded their eleventh album 'The Wall' throughout 1979 in France, New York and Los Angeles, assisted by co-producer, Bob Ezrin and engineer, James Guthrie.

An adjunct to the sessions was the famous addition of a group of pupils from London's Islington Green School, who recorded their backing vocals ("We don't need no education…") on "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2" at Pink Floyd's own Britannia Row Studios in London. This became the world's introduction to the album with the release of its first single, an instant success, accompanied by a promotional film which included several of the groundbreaking images from the story, including Gerald Scarfe's brilliantly realized marching hammers.

Pink Floyd: 'The Wall' Immersion box set, Experience edition and Collectors 180g 2LP Vinyl edition will be released February 28, 2012 through EMI. The 2CD remastered Discovery edition is out now.

Columbia/Legacy Recordings Releasing the First of "Bear's Sonic Journals": Big Brother & the Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, Recorded & Produced by Owsley Stanley ("Bear")

Long Awaited Release of Seminal Concert Recording from Mythic Soundman's "Sonic Journals" Available Tuesday, March 13, 2012

NEW YORK, Jan. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia/Legacy Recordings is proud to announce the release of Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, a previously unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, recorded June 23, 1968 by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a/k/a "Bear," who supervised the mastering of this release before his fatal car accident on March 12, 2011, in his adopted homeland of Australia. The release of the album marks the one-year anniversary of his passing and is dedicated to Bear.

"Care was taken to preserve and ensure the integrity of the music as well as to present an accurate snapshot of the masterful talent of one of the greatest singers of her generation and one of the hottest live bands in the San Francisco scene," wrote Bear's widow, Sheilah Stanley, in her dedication to Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968. "This is Bear's vision -- how he heard the band live, and how he wanted to transmit that to you... this truly is Bear's presentation of this phenomenal band and inspirational music."

Cited by San Francisco rock scribe Joel Selvin as "truly one of the fathers of today's concert sound systems," Owsley Bear Stanley "supervised the sound at the Carousel Ballroom, a former big band dance palace at the corner of Market and Van Ness in downtown San Francisco that, for a few brief, glorious months in 1968 was operated by a collective formed by the Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother and the Holding Company, a social/musical laboratory experiment akin to inmates running asylums, whose six-month run may well have corresponded with the height of the whole '60s Haight-Ashbury/San Francisco thing...."

An essential and pivotal figure in the San Francisco counter-cultural scene, from beatniks to hippies to beyond, Bear began mixing live sound with the Grateful Dead in 1966 and ran the sound system for the Carousel until Bill Graham took over and rechristened it the Fillmore West in the autumn of 1968. From his first days with the Dead, Bear would record the shows he was involved with as a way to improve his live system set-ups. Bear's "sonic journals" are generally regarded as the gold standard for live concerts from the psychedelic era.

"What is key about these moments captured by Owsley is that they're a true representation of what this mythic band really sounded like live," notes rock scribe Jaan Uhelszki in her essay on Janis and Big Brother's enduring ability to astound and surprise. "The rough magic, the explosive synergy, the dangerous frisson of boundaries being demolished between artist and audience....these 14 songs are a testament to what a force of nature Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company was during these two nights at the Carousel Ballroom. Showing them at the zenith of their considerable power, it is so fortunate that this recording was ever made -- only two months before their break up. This is one of the few living documents of that propitious and monumental pairing."

"He viewed these recordings as windows into the past," wrote Bear's son, Starfinder Stanley, in his notes for Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968. "So this is not just a live recording of Janis Joplin singing with Big Brother and the Holding Company. This is an auditory portal that...can transport you back to the short-lived but incredible world of the Carousel Ballroom in 1968."

great article out of the uk:

The Week In Radio: The stylus gurus know how to spin a good yarn

Fiona Sturges

Being a radio DJ is a cinch nowadays. Where once upon a time a DJ had to haul crates of records into work, now they can simply take in their iPod, set it to shuffle and then lie down for an executive nap.

At the risk of sounding like I was born before the Industrial Revolution, this would explain why music radio has lost its magic. Not only has new technology deprived us of the warm hiss of a stylus hitting vinyl, it has removed the DJ's requirement to thumb through their record collection and come up with a set list. This certainly accounts for why they're now called presenters rather than DJs, and why musical passion is often in short supply.

We needn't despair, though, as a fresh wind has been blowing across BBC 6 Music. Vinyl has crept back on the airwaves well over a decade after it was phased out, and its principal champion is the music journalist Pete Paphides, whose love of this endangered format crackles out of the radio as powerfully as his own vast record collection.

Bonnie Raitt Releasing New Album

Singer Bonnie Raitt recently announced that she will be releasing her first new album in 7+ years. The album is called 'Slipstorm' and it is scheduled for release on April 10, 2012. The new album follows a 7-year break following the deaths of her parents, brother and best friend.

According to the Washington Post, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said: "I hadn't stopped in a long, long time, so I really wanted to take a beak and not concentrate on making a new record or wait I was going to do next. I waited until I was really ready to come back."

This Week's Top 5 Best Selling Vinyl Records

1. Blue Album (Pre-Order) by Weezer

As one of the most popular groups to emerge in the post-grunge alternative rock aftermath, Weezer received equal amounts of criticism and praise for their hook-heavy guitar pop. This, the quartet's 1994 debut album, features all the foundations that have sustained the band, including catchy, bone-crunching riffs, chiming vocal harmonies, smart pop sensibilities, and an intangible charm and tounge-in-cheek approach. Classic!

2. Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd's most successful and singularly defining album is here to stay. The Dark Side of the Moon has sold over 40 million copies worldwide since its release in 1973, and it shows no signs of letting up. With lush, immaculate production and sweeping instrumentals, The Dark Side of the Moon is unrivaled in sonic brilliance. The complex textures found within have captivated audiophiles for over thirty years.

With lyrics about seemingly mundane details set against dreamy, atmospheric backdrops, the songs on The Dark Side of the Moon achieve a truly emotional response. Performances are not virtuosic, but they are brilliant nonetheless and were likewise brilliantly recorded. Abbey Road Studios engineer Alan Parsons and Pink Floyd made use of some of the most advanced techniques available at the time to craft a sound that was innovative yet entirely classic, by any sense of the word. Swirling organs, mellow drums, and spacious guitars are signature sounds that have been inextricably linked with Pink Floyd's magnificent songwriting.

The Dark Side of the Moon is a peerless entry in the annals of classic rock history. No record collection should be without this multi-platinum masterpiece.

3. Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

On its release in 1975 Wish You Were here topped the album charts in both the UK and the US. Reflecting the band's thoughts of the time on the music business, and exploring themes of absence, Wish You Were Here contains the classic cut Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a tribute to founder member Syd Barrett.

Since 1967 Pink Floyd have produced one of the most outstanding and enduring catalogues in the history of recorded music. The albums have been painstakingly remastered by James Guthrie (co-producer of The Wall). Artwork designed by long-time artwork collaborator Storm Thorgerson. As a part of their "Why Pink Floyd?" campaign, EMI has chosen to release three titles on collector's vinyl LP (throughout the year 2011 and into early 2012) including The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. 4. Abbey Road by The Beatles

The Beatles - Abbey Road on a domestic pressing at a good price! George came into his own as a writer with "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something." The sessions proved to be the last for the Beatles. The cassette version of Abbey Road has "Come Together" and "Here Comes the Sun" switched on the track list, and the UK version does not list "Her Majesty" on the back cover, whereas some US copies feature one or the other, or both. Rumors circulated for some time that Paul was not wearing pants for the cover photo and they were airbrushed on, but photo outtakes from the same session have proven this false.

Abbey Road won the 1969 Grammy for Best Engineered (Non-Classical) Recording. Nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Contemporary Vocal Performance, Group.

Ranks #244 on Rolling Stone’s List of the 500 Greatest Records of All-Time

Part of Mobile Fidelity’s Amazing Grateful Dead Reissue Series: Skull and Roses, From the Mars Hotel, Wake of the Flood, and In the Dark Also Available on 180g LP

If you want to experience why on any given night the Grateful Dead was the best live band going in 1969, you need to hear Live/Dead. If you want to understand how personal chemistry, symbiotic interplay, and otherworldly energy can lead to a near-extinct onstage combination of soulfulness, surprise, and suspense, you need to hear Live/Dead. Ranked by Rolling Stone on the magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Records of All Time. Universally acclaimed by both Deadheads and non-devotees alike. The perfect synthesis of the legendary group’s first-era vital characteristics and cosmic faculties. A gorgeously recorded sonic artifact and more, Live/Dead is outright essential.

Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes with the utmost care, and part of Mobile Fidelity’s unprecedented Grateful Dead reissue series, this numbered limited edition 180g 2LP version of Live/Dead raises the iconic album’s lofty prestige even higher. Recorded at three San Francisco concerts in early 1969 with a mobile 16-track studio, the 7-song set has always possessed excellent fidelity in large part because of a mic splitter—specially created for the project—that fed both into the PA system and record inputs, allowing the engineers to capture the shows without any loss in quality.

Seldom have venue dimensions, acoustic properties, spatial characteristics, low-frequency resonances, amplifier tonalities, soundstage balances, and vocal timbres been so faithfully reproduced—or enhanced. Mobile Fidelity’s version elevates Live/Dead into the revered pantheon of the most respected reference audiophile LPs. Close your eyes and you’re dead center, ten rows back in two of the Bay Area’s most beloved halls: Fillmore West and Avalon Ballroom. The degrees of realism are utterly staggering; no, you don’t need any, ahem, chemical assistance to facilitate the transcendent experience.

Renowned for contagious communication between its members, the Dead operates on a interstellar plane throughout Live/Dead. Witnessing the ebb-and-flow manners in which guitarist Jerry Garcia, bassist Phil Lesh, and drummer Billy Kreutzmann respond to one another’s passages and blur the lines between jazz, psychedelia, and rock disciplines. Meandering jamming this is not. Solos burn, rhythms thunder, bass lines roll, melodies twist. “Dark Star” remains the touchstone for what’s possible in epic frameworks, with notes climbing, darting, and skittering amidst a dark canvas seared with mystic vibes and punctuated with blossoming instrumentals. Along with the inseparable pairing of “St. Stephen” and “The Eleven—a sequence that highlights the raw gospel beauty of Garcia, Lesh, and Bob Weir’s harmonies as well as breathtaking tightrope segues—the explorative excursion epitomizes the Dead’s progressive inclination, cohesion, and ability.

Live/Dead isn’t all about the art of the improvisation. R&B-driven electric blues comes courtesy of organist/vocalist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, still in excellent health, and pianist Tom Constanten, who departed the band shortly after these shows occurred. The latter’s counterpoint playing and spiritual accents shadow the shivering ballad “Death Don’t Have No Mercy” and underscore a rousing, percussive-laden marathon take of “Turn on Your Love Light.” Call-and-response segments, spontaneous exchanges, and joyous merry-making doesn’t come any better. Live/Dead is a landmark in every sense; it remains the first 16-track album released. Its impact is still felt today.

From the illustrative cover art (hint: the word “Dead” subtly spells out “Acid” on the back cover) to the gatefold graphics and the extraordinary sonics, Mobile Fidelity’s 180g 2LP edition ranks among the label’s best releases. Ever. Secure your lowest-numbered edition by ordering now!

and in music history for today, january 5th:

(a correction - yesterday i listed that ex-beatles roadie Mal Evans died on the 4th, it was today)

Sam Phillips (Sun Records) was born in 1923 (died 2003)

In 1955, Elvis Presley, backed by Scotty Moore and Bill Black, kick off a three date tour in San Angelo, Texas as a backing act for headliner Billy Walker. The trio's pay for the night was $150.

In 1958, Coral Records releases what proves to be Buddy Holly's last record before his death, "It Doesn't Matter Anymore", which was one of the few songs that Buddy recorded that he didn't write. It was penned by Paul Anka and peaked at #13 two months after Holly was killed. It featured the orchestral backing of Dick Jacobs and was also successful in the United Kingdom.

In 1960, Marty Robbins' Country-Crossover tune "El Paso" tops the Billboard Hot 100. At 4:38 long, Columbia Records had initially refused to issue the song as a single, but did include it on Robbins' "Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs" LP. The track proved so popular, Columbia changed its mind and the song would go on to win a Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording.

In 1961, the Beatles appeared at Litherland Town Hall, Liverpool. In the audience are two members of Rory Storm And The Hurricanes: Johnny Guitar and Ringo Starr, who have just returned from Hamburg, Germany.

In 1963, Leonard Chess, co-founder of Chess records, told Billboard magazine, "As it stands today, there's virtually no difference between rock 'n' roll, pop, and rhythm & blues. The music has completely overlapped."

In 1965, the Supremes recorded "Stop! In the Name of Love." After additional work on the track January 7, it was completed on January 11. The song was included on the Supremes' sixth album, 'More Hits by The Supremes,' and was nominated for the 1966 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Group Vocal Performance, losing to "Flowers on the Wall" by the Statler Brothers. The song was also honored by inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's permanent collection of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

The Supremes' choreography for this song, with one hand on the hip and the other outstretched in a "stop" gesture, is equally legendary. Paul Williams and Melvin Franklin of The Temptations taught the girls the routine backstage in London, before the Supremes' first televised performance of the single on the Ready Steady Go! special "The Sound of Motown," hosted by Motown enthusiast Dusty Springfield. They also performed the song on an episode of the ABC variety program Shindig! which aired on Wednesday, February 25, 1965

In 1968, "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" goes Gold just nine months after its release. The LP contains every Top 40 single Dylan enjoyed through 1967 and has since been certified five times Platinum. It peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 200 and went to #3 on the UK album chart.

Also in 1968, in Stockholm, Sweden, Jimi Hendrix was jailed for one day on drunk and disorderly charges after "going berserk" and destroying everything in his hotel room.

In 1973, Bruce Springsteen released his first studio album "Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ." It was recorded in a single week at lower-priced 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt, New York to save as much money as possible from the advance given by Columbia Records. It sold about 25,000 copies in the first year of issue. Two tracks from the album, "Blinded By The Light" and "Spirit In The Night," were released as singles but neither made a dent in the charts.

In 1976, 40 year old Mal Evans, a former roadie and bodyguard of The Beatles, is shot to death by police at his Los Angeles apartment. His girlfriend, Fran Hughes, found him upset and despondent and when friends couldn't get Evans to release the unloaded rifle he was holding, they called police. Evans supposedly pointed the gun at police and they opened fire.

The Sex Pistols' U.S. concert debut took place in 1978.

In 1978, Prince made his solo performance debut in Minneapolis, MN.

In 1979, jazz bassist/composer/bandleader Charles Mingus died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) at the age of 56.

In 1980, the first number one song of the eighties belonged to KC and The Sunshine Band for "Please Don't Go." It was their fifth and final US chart topper.

"The Wiz" opened on Broadway in 1975.

In 1984, the Police, announced a farewell concert for March 2 in Australia. The group had been together for 9 years.

In 1991, Iron Maiden topped the UK singles chart with "Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter," however, with sales of only 42,000 copies during its first week, the record became the lowest selling UK number one in over thirty years.

In 1998, Sonny Bono suffered fatal head and neck injuries while skiing at the Heavenly Ski Resort in Nevada. The 62 year old Bono was apparently skiing alone, late in the day when he crashed into a tree. After leaving show business, Sonny was elected Mayor of Palm Springs, California in 1988 and in 1994 was elected to the US congress and re-elected in 1996.

In 2004, Kinks singer Ray Davies was shot in the leg while on holiday in New Orleans. The 59-year-old singer-songwriter was shot when running after two men who stole his girlfriend’s purse at gunpoint. Davies was admitted to the Medical Center of Louisiana but his injuries were not considered serious. New Orleans police said one person had been arrested, and police were still searching for the second.

birthdays today include (among others): Chris Stein (Blondie) (62), Grant Young (Soul Asylum) (49), Kate Schellenbach (Luscious Jackson, Beastie Boys) (46), Marilyn Manson (born Brian Warner) (43) and Bryan Hitt (REO Speedwagon) (58)

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 2, 2012

DEAR JERRY: I stumbled across an online video of Sammy Davis Jr. performing a live version of “Mr. Bojangles, and I assumed it must have been written for him. That's how good it is.

Is that really the case? Is he the original artist for “Mr. Bojangles”?

Other than “The Candy Man,” I cannot name even one of his hit records, which strikes me as odd since he was regarded as an all-around great entertainer with a long career. How unusual is that?
—Yvonne Furman, Sheboygan, Wisc.

DEAR YVONNE: Your observation is a valid one, though Davis is not the only major concert attraction whose fan base did not hinge on whether or not they made hit records.

Being a consummate showman — singer, dancer, impressionist, comedian — was enough to keep the crowds coming.

Then again, it's not as if he had only the one memorable hit song.

Sammy's first appearance on the singles sales charts came in 1954 with “Hey There,” his being just one of many recordings of the well-known number, originally performed on Broadway by John Raitt in “The Pajama Game.”

His “Hey There” made the Top 20, as did seven other singles during his seven-decade career:

1955: “Something's Gotta Give”/“Love Me Or Leave Me” (Both sides)
1955: “That Old Black Magic”
1962: “What Kind of Fool Am I”
1963 “The Shelter of Your Arms”
1967: “Don't Blame the Children”
1968: “I've Gotta Be Me”
1972 “The Candy Man”

Strangely, the significant momentum Davis gained with “The Candy Man,” his only No. 1 hit, dissipated as that record's popularity faded. At least his days of hit songs ended on the highest possible note.

Two other superstar attractions that come to mind, whose in-person draw far outstripped their record sales, are Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli — who just happen to be mother and daughter.

Mostly in connection with her work in films, Judy had some hit singles between 1939 and '54, but no more, and Liza has never been on the best-selling singles charts.

Reviewing album sales, the story is about the same. Sammy, Judy, and Liza each had very few biggies.

The only LP by any of the three to reach No. 1 is “Judy at Carnegie Hall” (1961), for which Judy received a Gold Record, and a couple of Grammys.

Minnelli's “Liza with a Z” (1972) also earned Gold Record status.

The “Mr. Bojangles” saga begins in 1965, seven years before Sammy Davis released it on his “Sammy Davis Jr. Live” album.

The lyrics are based entirely on the real-life experiences of singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker, and a cell mate calling himself Bojangles. The two met while both were incarcerated in New Orleans.

Walker put his composition to music, and his original version came out in the summer of 1968 (Atco 6594).

The tune became a regional hit for Jerry, but two years later, when recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (Liberty 56197), “Mr. Bojangles” landed in the nation's Top 10. It is their biggest hit ever.

Since then, no less than 50 different artists have recorded Walker's masterpiece.

IZ ZAT SO? Regarding “Mr. Bojangles,” Sammy Davis Jr. explained it this way to his audiences:

“I cannot do a show without including “Mr. Bojangles.” In fact, I would not do a show without including it. It's very special to me, and hits close to home. I almost feel like it was written for me, but it was not. Nor was it written about Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, as some people say. I did it the first time live with Tom Jones, in 1970 on his TV show. In that skit, Tom sang the song by himself, while I silently played the part of Mr. Bojangles, dancing and doing routines in sync with the lyrics.”

A mime no more, Sammy's own song-and-dance interpretation quickly became a signature segment of his own shows.

Vinyl Album Sales Soar As CDs Fall In UK

Sales of vinyl albums in the UK rose by 40 per cent in 2011, despite a fall in CD sales and an overall decline in the music market, official figures have shown. The BPI, a body that represents the British music industry, said that 337,000 vinyl LPs were sold in the UK last year, the highest figure since 2005.

Industry insiders put the rise down to the superior sound quality of vinyl albums and the growing popularity of Record Store Day, an annual event which last year saw artists such as Lady Gaga and Kings of Leon put out vinyl-only releases.

DIO - Holy Diver To Be Issued As 24 Karat Gold Limited Edition CD

Audio Fidelity is reissuing DIO’s classic debut album Holy Diver as a 24 karat gold limited edition CD. The CD contains a two-page spread copy of the photo-montage LP liner with images from both RAINBOW and BLACK SABBATH days that was included in the original vinyl release.

A press release states, “Holy Diver is one of the most respected albums in rock and metal and Ronnie James Dio was one of the most talented and respected artists in the world. Leaving Black Sabbath to create a new group built around his formidable singing and unquestionably stellar songwriting, Holy Diver's stunning quality and consistency owed much to Dio's carefully chosen bandmates, including powerhouse drummer (and fellow Black Sabbath survivor) Vinny Appice, veteran bassist Jimmy Bain, and a phenomenal find in young Irish guitarist Vivian Campbell, whose tastefully pyrotechnic leads helped make this the definitive Dio lineup. The group entered the studio to record their debut album in early 1983. Produced by Ronnie James Dio, Holy Diver consists of nine original cuts penned by the singer and various band members. Included are such distinctive Dio cuts as ‘Stand Up And Shout’, ‘Straight Through The Heart’, the title track and the concert favorite ‘Rainbow In The Dark’."

Can the record fair survive in the age of downloads? A new generation of buyers and sellers is dealing in ultra-rare collectables

Nick Duerden

It is a Saturday afternoon in west London, and five pounds has purchased entry into the Olympia record fair. The untrained eye sees perhaps as many as 200 stalls, each groaning under the weight of an awful lot of old vinyl and CDs, and in front of which gather men (and they are mostly men) in winter coats on the prowl for a stone-cold, ultra-rare collectable. When they fail in locating one – and they mostly do, stone-cold, ultra-rare collectables being hard to come by – they invariably settle for an obscure bargain in the hope that one day it too shall attain collectable status.

The atmosphere here is palpably different to the kind you'd find in HMV. Where HMV's vacuumed aisles thrum with relaxed browsers, this dusty hall is alive with antennas twitching, a blokey community, certainly, but a competitive one, too, each hoping to outfox the other, with every stallholder not just grateful, but desperate, for the custom.

Their touching patronage aside, the record fair is nevertheless a shadow of its former self this far into the 21st century.

Top 5 eBay Vinyl Record Sales - Week Ending 12/31/2011

The private press funk treasure from John Heartsman gets the top spot on this lackluster week. The week after Christmas can be low-key, but watch for the weeks from early January through Valentine's day to test the economic resilience of vinyl in 2012. As filmmaker Jeanie Finlay points out in her acclaimed documentary "Sound It Out", record collecting is primarily a men's pre-occupation.

And I declare that as men most of us never get what we want for Christmas - socks, ties, hand-made chotchkies from our kids. We must sneak in our true material desires in the zone between New Years and Valentine's Day.

The All-American Rejects Gearing Up to Release New Music in 2012

MULTI-PLATINUM ROCK BAND, FRONTED BY TYSON RITTER, WILL RELEASE BRAND-NEW SINGLE "BEEKEEPER'S DAUGHTER"

TRACK IS LEAD-OFF SINGLE FOR REJECTS' UPCOMING FOURTH ALBUM KIDS IN THE STREET

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- DGC/Interscope recording artists THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS will kick off 2012 with the release of "Beekeeper's Daughter" — the multi-platinum rock band's first single since "Gives You Hell" became the No. 1 most-played song of 2009 at Top 40 radio. Written by Rejects' lead singer, lyricist, and bassist Tyson Ritter and guitarist Nick Wheeler, the potent pop-rock "Beekeeper's Daughter," available digitally on January 24th, captures a tumultuous time while Ritter was living in Los Angeles after wrapping two years of touring behind the band's 2008 album When The World Comes Down.

"'Beekeeper's Daughter' is a story about a guy who thinks he can get away with anything and always have a girl there waiting for him," Ritter says. "He never backs down from that opinion. At the end of it, he's even stronger and more snide and thinks he's invincible no matter what. He's an asshole, but at that point in my life, I was kind of an asshole. As we were making Kids In The Street, I went from that to being a completely humbled guy who's looking at his reflection saying, 'Wow, what have I done?' It may make me not seem very likeable, but it was important that I be truthful and really open up on this album about what I've been through."

"Beekeeper's Daughter," along with the rest of the tracks on Kids In The Street, was produced by Grammy-nominated producer Greg Wells, who is known for his work with Adele, Katy Perry, and OneRepublic, among many others. "Greg was the first producer we've worked with who really spoke my language, which translated into the sound of the album," Ritter says. "If you really want to know what Kids In The Street sounds like, it sounds like The All-American Rejects finally got their shit together and wrote a record that was going to keep them around."

Since forming in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1999, The All-American Rejects have released three studio albums: their platinum self-titled debut, featuring the breakthrough hit "Swing Swing," followed by 2005's double-platinum Move Along, which spawned the Top 10 hits "It Ends Tonight," "Dirty Little Secret," and "Move Along," as well as the gold-certified When The World Comes Down, featuring the 4-million seller "Gives You Hell," which spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Top 40 charts, and more than 13 weeks in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The All-American Rejects, which also includes rhythm guitarist Mike Kennerty and drummer Chris Gaylor, have sold more than 4 million albums and 16 million singles worldwide. More information about Kids In The Street will be announced in the coming months. Until then, stay tuned to www.allamericanrejects.com.

KISS members Paul Stanley (guitar, vocals) and Tommy Thayer (guitar), along with producer Greg Collins, have released a one-minute video message from Collins' studio, The Nook, where they are putting the finishing touches on the band's new CD, "Monster".

"[KISS is] about two days from [being] finished with this album," says Stanley. "It's almost done and it's awesome. It is by far the best thing we've done in I don't know how long. Have I ever said that before? Yeah. Was I right? Yeah. I'm right this time again. . . Truly, the album kicks major ass and we're very, very proud of it." Thayer adds, "You're gonna as as excited as we are, 'cause we're really excited. And we're not just saying that. This is great stuff. It's amazing."

Thin Lizzy Tapes Resurface After 26 Years

A TREASURE trove of tapes stashed away by Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott will be released as a boxed set later this year. Twenty six years after the Dublin rocker's death at the age of 36, more of his lost music will be heard by the public for the first time in June.

Shortly before he passed away in 1986, Mr Lynott gave 150 tapes to a third party for safekeeping. The cache of up to 700 songs has finally been released to record company Universal Music.

"This is an absolutely stunning find," Steve Hammonds, project manager behind the new Thin Lizzy box set, told the Irish Independent. "In every group there's a member who lovingly collects their recordings and in Thin Lizzy that was Phil Lynott, because Lizzy was his baby and his band."

It will be the second boxed set in recent times to feature archive work by the band, following last year's 'Live At The BBC' release.

Peter Frampton’s 1954 Les Paul Found in the Caribbean – After 32 Years!

A 1954 Gibson Les Paul that Peter Frampton played during his Humble Pie and solo days has been found after investigation by two Frampton fans. The guitar had been presumed lost in a 1980 cargo plane crash.

The Curaçao Tourist Board acquired the guitar and experts from Gibson Guitar confirmed it was, indeed, the missing guitar, long missing from Frampton’s collection.

and in music history for today january 4th:

In 1936, the first pop music chart based on national sales was published by "Billboard" magazine.

In 1950, RCA Victor announced that it would manufacture long-playing (LP) records.

In 1953, over 20,000 people jam the streets of Montgomery, Alabama, as Hank Williams' funeral is held at the City Auditorium.

In 1954, four days before his 20th birthday, a young truck driver named Elvis Presley paid $4 to record a ten-inch acetate demo at the Memphis Recording Service, an open-to-the-public business run by Sam Phillips. The two songs Presley recorded, "Casual Love Affair" and "I'll Never Stand in Your Way", impressed Phillips enough that he had Elvis record his first professional sides for Sun Records the following August.

In 1961, after leaping from #100 to #50 last week, Mark Dinning's "Teen Angel" enters the Top 40 of the Billboard Pop chart. The teenage tragedy song will reach the top less than five weeks later.

In 1962, the British music magazine Mersey Beat publishes a group popularity poll which shows The Beatles at the top, well ahead of Gerry and The Pacemakers, The Remo Four, Rory Storm and The Hurricanes and Johnny Sandon And The Searchers. A rare copy of this edition recently sold for $2,500.

In 1964, Bobby Vinton's "There! I've Said It Again" becomes the last US number one record before the so called British Invasion. Between Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock" in July, 1955 and Vinton's hit, only five non-American artists could manage a US chart topper. All that was about to change.

In 1965, the Fender Guitar company, maker of the Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars, was purchased by CBS for $13 million.

On this date in 1967, the Doors released their self-titled debut album. In the years following its initial issue, the stereo release was discovered to be about 3.5% slower than the video and audio live performances of the material by the band, and sheet music showed the song to be in a key almost a half step higher. Released five years ago, "The 40th Anniversary Mix" of the album presents a stereo version in speed-corrected form for the first time and contains three bonus tracks. The original mono 45 RPM single of "Light My Fire" and the mono album were produced at the correct speed.

The Doors credit the success of their first album to being able to work the songs out night after night at the Whisky a Go Go and the London Fog. The album was ranked number 42 on Rolling Stone's list the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Side one
1. "Break on Through (To the Other Side)" – 2:29
2. "Soul Kitchen" – 3:35
3. "The Crystal Ship" – 2:34

5. "Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)" (Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill) – 3:20
6. "Light My Fire" – 7:06

Side two
1. "Back Door Man" (Willie Dixon) – 3:34
2. "I Looked at You" – 2:22
3. "End of the Night" – 2:52
4. "Take It as It Comes" – 2:23
5. "The End" – 11:41

In 1968, in Los Angeles, the University of California announced that students studying for music degrees would be required to examine the music of the Rolling Stones, saying it was because the group had made such an important contribution to modern music

In 1970, tragedy struck The Who when a gang of teens attacked Keith Moon's Bentley limo. His chauffeur, Neil Boland got out to try to protect the car, but left it in gear, and it started moving. Moon, who had no driver's license, jumped behind the wheel. Unfortunately, the chauffeur, who was being beaten, had fallen under the car and as Keith gunned the engine, Neil was run over and killed. Though the inquest absolved Moon of blame, Neil's family didn't and neither did Moon himself, as he was been haunted by the incident for the rest of his life.

In 1970, at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London, the Beatles (minus John Lennon) re-recorded vocals and a new guitar solo for the Paul McCartney composition "Let It Be."

In 1972, Yes released the single "Roundabout."

In 1975, Elton John's remake of The Beatles' "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" becomes his tenth US Top Ten hit and his third number one. The recording included John Lennon on guitar.

In 1976, Mal Evans was shot to death by police at his Los Angeles apartment. Evans alledgedly pointed a loaded rifle at officers causing them to fire upon him. Evans was a former roadie and bodyguard of the Beatles.

In 1986, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy died at the age of 36. A pathologist's report later indicated that he had developed multiple internal abscesses and blood poisoning, as a result of which he had suffered kidney, liver and heart failure. His last single, "Nineteen", had been released just a few weeks earlier.

In 2001, bandleader Les Brown died of lung cancer at the age of 88.

In 2002, Bill "Little Bo" Savich, drummer for the instrumental group Johnny And The Hurricanes, died at the age of 62. The band placed four songs on the Billboard Top 40, including the #5 hit, "Red River Rock" in 1959.

In 2010, Nielsen SoundScan reported that album sales in the United States fell 12.8% to 326.2 million units from 373.9 million units in the prior year. Sales of CDs fell by nearly 20% for the fourth year in a row, while digital album downloads posted gains of 13%, selling 86.3 million, up from the 76.4 million during 2009, accounting for nearly 26.5% of all US album sales last year.

Also in 2010, Gerry Rafferty, the lead singer of Stealers Wheel on their 1973 hit "Stuck In The Middle With You" died after a long illness at the age of 63. After the band split up, he went on to a successful solo career which included five more Billboard Top 30 hits, including "Baker Street" and "Right Down The Line".

birthdays today include (among others); Till Lindemann (Rammstein) (49), Cait O'Riordan (Pogues) (47), Nels Cline (Wilco) (56), Mark Hollis (Talk Talk) (57), Patty Loveless (55) and Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) (52)

Van Halen Reveals Album Art

The first public viewing of Van Halen's highly anticipated new album took place in New York's Times Square on New Year's Eve. The artwork for the forthcoming release was projected on a giant LED billboard above the McDonald's at 46th St. and 7th Ave. and could clearly be seen at various points throughout the night, as several networks, including CNN, ABC and NBC, were broadcasting live. It was especially visible during Justin Bieber's performance of the Beatles' "Let It Be" on Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve.

The cover image, a photo-illustration of a train from the New York Central System, one of the largest railroads in US history which operated in the northeast during the 1800s, was potentially viewed by more than a billion people, when you factor in the global TV audience in addition to the one million people who gathered in midtown Manhattan to ring in 2012.

The Allman Brothers Band Announce Annual 2012 Beacon Theater Run

by: Matt Wardlaw

The year 2012 will be a big one for the Allman Brothers Band in more ways than just one. They’ll be honored at the Grammy Awards with a Lifetime Achievement Award and ramping up to that, the band has declared 2012 ‘The Year Of The Peach’ and announced their annual New York slate of dates at the Beacon Theater beginning March 9.

The 1972 ‘Eat A Peach’ double album was the last to include legendary guitar player Duane Allman, who passed away tragically in a motorcycle accident at the age of 24. Largely composed of unused live material from their ‘Live at Fillmore East’ set, ‘Peach’ also featured some new studio material, including ‘Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More,’ a composition that Gregg Allman credits as being the song that personally helped him to move forward and continue with the Allman Brothers Band.

The Worst Album Covers of 2011

The end of 2011 means that it is time for the "Best of" and "Worse of" lists to be published online and in magazines. This year, there were not as many disgusting album covers as we have seen in the past. There were not any animal mutilations or covers featuring feces and other bodily wastes.

However, there were covers featuring amputated limbs, a mutilated woman, and a nose or two being picked. There were also a couple of covers that are noteworthy for being poorly designed and disappointing to fans. My list of The Worst Album Covers of 2011 appears below in order from 10 to 1.

Favourite Australian Album Covers 2011

It’s the end of the year again and another opportunity for me to look at my favourite Australian album covers from the past 12 months. All in all it was a fairly good year cover design wise – maybe the art of the album cover isn’t dead after all. While the rest of the world produced some pretty lacklustre results, Australia seemed to up it’s game with some fantastic imagery for some very interesting music produced during the year. It took some searching and as usual. most of the really inspiring stuff came from independent and under-the -radar releases rather than the more chart friendly releases, with some notable exceptions.

and in music history for jan 2, 2012:

In 1926, the first issue of The Melody Maker magazine went on sale in the UK. Advertised as being for "all who are interested in the production of popular music", the first issue featured dance band news, a story about ukuleles and how to read music by sight.

In 1941, the Andrews Sisters recorded "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."

In 1955, the funeral of Johnny Ace was held in Memphis, TN. 5,000 people attended.

In 1962, after refusing to sign an oath that says they have never been members of the Communist party, the American Folk group, The Weavers are removed from the line-up of NBC-TV's Jack Parr Show.

In 1968, the entire shipment of John and Yoko’s album Two Virgins was seized by authorities in New Jersey due to the full frontal nude photograph of the couple on the cover. The album was eventually wrapped in plain brown paper in record stores.

In 1969, Led Zeppelin played the first of four nights at the Whisky A Go-Go, Los Angeles, during the band’s first North American tour. Support group was the Alice Cooper band.

In 1969, in London, the Beatles gathered at Twickenham Studios to begin rehearsals for their new project, conceived by Paul McCartney and tentatively titled "Get Back." What was intended to be a bare bones, "return to roots" production that would bring the band back to the camaraderie of their earliest days, proved instead to be a disaster. The studios were cold, a lot of the material was subpar, the band seemed half-hearted, and all four of them began sniping at each other over issues left unresolved from when they worked on "The White Album." No professional multi-track recordings were made of these sessions at Twickenham since they were simply rehearsing for a proposed live performance. Recording for the album was done at Apple Studios between January 22 and 31, including their famous rooftop performance on January 30. The film and album were released as "Let It Be" after the band broke up, and the Beatles went on to record one more studio album, "Abbey Road."

In 1971, George Harrison became the first solo Beatle to have a #1 album in the US when "All Things Must Pass" went to the top of the Billboard chart for a seven week stay. It was eventually certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA and was ranked #437 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

In 1972, Elvis Presley buys a $10,000 robe inscribed "The People's Champion" and presents it to boxer Muhammad Ali.

In 1974, singer/actor Woodward Maurice "Tex" Ritter died of a heart attack at age 68 while trying to bail a member of his band out of jail.

In 1975, US District Court Judge Richard Owen ruled in New York, that John Lennon and his lawyers will have access to Department of Immigration files pertaining to his deportation case.

In 1977, jazz pianist/composer (Misty) Erroll Garner died after a heart attack at age 55.

In 1979, the trial of ex-Sex Pistol, Sid Vicious for the October 1978 murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, opened in New York City. Vicious died of a heroin overdose, thereby not living to hear the verdict.

In 1980, singer Larry Williams was found dead from a gunshot wound to his head in his Los Angeles, California, home at age 45. Williams had the 1957 US #5 and U.K. #21 single “Short Fat Fannie.” He also was known for “Bony Moronie” and “Dizzy Miss Lizzy.” The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Dr. Feelgood, Flying Burrito Brothers, Johnny Winter, Little Richard, The Who, Ritchie Valens and Bill Haley & His Comets all covered his songs.

In 1981, R&B singer David Lynch of the Platters died of cancer at age 51.

In 1989, Tom Jones made a guest appearance on Late Night With David Letterman, performing his comeback tune, "Kiss", a song he recorded with The Art of Noise. It was his first US hit in almost a dozen years.

In 1990, Phil Collins started a three-week run at the top of the Billboard album chart with "...But Seriously". It will become the second best selling album of the year, behind Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation 1814".

In 1994, Meat Loaf started a three week run at the top of the UK album chart with "Bat Out Of Hell II - Back Into Hell". The LP, which featured the single "I'd Do Anything for Love", also topped the charts in the US and Australia and has sold more than 14 million copies world-wide.

In 1997, 45 year old Randy California, who is best known as the leader of the Rock band Spirit, died tragically when he was gripped by an undertow while swimming on the coast of the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Before he died, he was able to save his 12 year-old son, Quinn.

In 2000, jazz cornet and trumpet player/composer Nat Adderley died of complications from diabetes at age 68.

In 2003, Edward Farran of The Arbors died of kidney failure at the age of 64. The group reached #20 on the Billboard chart in 1969 with their version of "The Letter".

In 2007, Cristin Keleher, who once broke into former Beatle George Harrison's Hawaii home, was found dead at age 34 after an apparent murder-suicide in California. She made headlines in December 1999 by entering Harrison's Maui estate and then cooking herself a frozen pizza. Police said her body and that of a 48-year-old man had been found in a car. Both had gunshot wounds to the head.

In 2008, Billboard.com reported that Paul McCartney underwent a heart-related surgical procedure in the latter part of 2007. Reports said the 65-year-old former Beatle had a coronary angioplasty, which involves the opening of arteries to allow greater blood flow. McCartney recovered sufficiently to perform in a televised New Year's Eve program with Kylie Minogue.

In 2009, according to official U.S. sales figures, AC/DC were the biggest sellers of 2008 with over 3.4 million in sales. Lil Wayne was in second place with 3.3 million, Taylor Swift was third with 3.2 million, Coldplay fourth with 2.5 million and Metallica fifth with 2.3 million.
