new from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

Bob Dylan - Desire

Another great personal Dylan album, Desire (1976) captures Dylan at the beginning of his Rolling Thunder Revue era. Folk, Rock, Middle Eastern themes and epic narratives, the album is a Pop staple throughout. A wild collection of styles result in an album that ranks in the top of all Dylan efforts. It rambles, rocks and thunders – the sheer energy is just infectious. Its best known track and album opener "Hurricane", is quickly followed by the hypnotic "Isis" and breezy "Mozambique". A fascinating record, the 18th Dylan release on Music On Vinyl!  180 gram audiophile vinyl and Insert

Dave Brubeck - We're All Together Again For The First Time

During the late '60s and early '70s, Dave Brubeck used to jam with baritonist Gerry Mulligan, along with The Dave Bubeck Trio's regulars Jack Six on bass and drummer Alan Dawson. When Paul Desmond joined on alto sax, the newly formed quintet recorded several live dates which resulted in We're All Together Again For The First Time(1973). The album contains a definitive live version of Brubeck's classic "Take Five" which takes up half the B-side of the record, showcasing the prowess of every member. Other interesting tunes include "Rotterdam Blues" and "Koto Song", where Paul Desmond takes center stage.  180 gram audiophile vinyl

Soda Stereo - Soda Stereo

England had The Police, United States had Blondie... and Argentina had Soda Stereo, one of the greatest bands of the new wave explosion and without any doubt one of the most important in the history of Rock in Spanish.

Their debut was a refreshing breath of modernity and smart lyrics: produced by Federico Moura (leader of Virus), the album contained strong attacks against the lack of control of the consumer society, and it was sarcastically launched at a local fast food chain. Soon it was awarded Platinum in Argentina and Peru, and Double Platinum in Chile, making it an essential title to understand modern music in Latin America.

This Music On Vinyl release is the first vinyl reissue of the band worldwide since 1995. 180 gram audiophile vinyl and Insert

Joe Vitale - Roller Coaster Weekend

As a drummer, flutist and keyboardist, Joe Vitale's first album featured his own playing on multiple instruments. Augmented by guitar fireworks of former band mate Joe Walsh, Rick Derringer and Phil Keaggy, Vitale delivered an album filled to the brim with catchy rhythms and playful songwriting. Ron and Howard Albert produced the album, whom were also responsible for Derek and the Dominoes' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, the Allman Brothers' Eat A Peach, and other legendary albums. After recording Rollercoaster Weekend, Vitale would join the Stills-Young band and tour with the classic Crosby, Stills & Nash line-up, as well as the Eagles. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Elvis Presley - Elvis At Stax

Riding high on the success of Aloha From Hawaii, Elvis did something remarkable. He decided that his next recording project would be on his home turf - Memphis, TN. The most desirable studio in town was the red-hot STAX - the launching pad of such greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Isaac Hayes. Elvis assembled the very best musicians in town - members of Booker T. and The MGs, The Memphis Boys and his own TCB band to create the ultimate band and he searched for fresh new material that would reflect his new path. Such songs as "I Got A Feelin' In My Body" and "Loving Arms" demonstrate an artist looking to broaden his palette and his reach. The Stax material has never been positioned as a whole body of work - but is an amazing chapter of Elvis' career. With the Elvis At Stax release, all of this material is collected for the first time. Along with some of the funky outtakes, it creates a fresh new package that, while it doesn't have the known hits, tells a great story.

2. I've Got A Thing About You Baby
3. If You Talk In Your Sleep
4. Raised On Rock

6. I Got A Feelin' In My Body

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 12, 2013

DEAR JERRY: I was flabbergasted at your piece on how very successful Decca was with singles sales in the '40s. I couldn't have imagined any label besides Columbia or RCA having nine of the Top 10 hits.

I doubt anything like that happened in the 1960s, even when Capitol had the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Peter & Gordon. That is unless it was when the Top 5 hits were all by the Beatles.
—Ivan Veeneman, Jacksonville, Fla.

DEAR IVAN: You're right about there being nothing in later decades to equal Decca's dominance in the '40s, even in the 1960s when there was no shortage of superstars.

One key reason is that record production peaked big time in the '60s, and the major companies of decades past found themselves yielding chart slots to countless new labels.

The change, in fact, was immediate. Before the time came to flip the first calendar page of the '60s, every one of the Top 10 — actually the Top 11 — records came from a different company. Check out this chart for January 25, 1960:

1. "Running Bear" (Mercury 71474) Johnny Preston
2. "El Paso" (Columbia 41511) Marty Robbins
3. "Why" (Chancellor 1045) Frankie Avalon
4. "Teen Angel" (MGM 12845) Mark Dinning
5. "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" (Swan 4043)
6. "The Big Hurt" (Signet 275) Miss Toni Fisher
7 "The Village of St. Bernadette" (Cadence 1374) Andy Williams
8. "Go, Johnny Go" (Ace 575) Jimmy Clanton
9. "Pretty Blue Eyes" (ABC-Paramount 10058) Steve Lawrence
10. "Where Or When" (Laurie 3044) Dion and the Belmonts
11. "You Got What It Takes" (United Artists 185) Marv Johnson

This is but the first of many weeks that followed with 10 tunes from 10 different labels.

At the time (April 4, 1964) the Beatles owned the Top 5, only two of their singles were Capitol's, though in time they would all belong to Capitol and EMI:

1. "Can't Buy Me Love" (Capitol 5150)
2. "Twist and Shout" (Tollie 9001)
3. "She Loves You" (Swan 4152)
4. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (Capitol 5112)
5. "Please Please Me" (Vee-Jay 581)

Those two are the only Capitol discs by anyone in that week's Top 10.

DEAR JERRY: "The Sopranos" used a lot of great oldies in their episodes, most of which I recognize. That's good, because they never identify any of the songs or artists in the credits.

One that does stump me is heard at both the beginning and the end of "Two Tonys" (first episode of Season Five). I think that was the only time they used the same song twice like that.

Now that I want that record, I'm hoping you can tell me what they didn't.

It features a great guitar that's twangy in a Dwight Yoakam sort of way, and a singer who sounds a bit like Dolly Parton. The lyrics even seem like something she might have written.
—Albert Hartsfield, Palmdale, Calif.

DEAR ALBERT: The producers must have liked this song to have used it twice. Like you, I don't recall another episode with so much of the same song.

The artist is Emmylou Harris, coincidentally a former singing partner of Dolly Parton's, and her song is "Heaven Only Knows" (Reprise 22999), a Top 20 hit in 1989.

Paul Kennerley, Emmylou's husband for about eight years (1985-1993), wrote "Heaven Only Knows." It is just one of many tunes he wrote for Emmylou. Paul also penned numerous hits for other top country stars.

DEAR JERRY: As I am listening to Adele's "21," I am wondering if this album is still in the Top 10 in the U.S.

It's been many months since you last mentioned it.
—Tammy Singleton, Norman, Okla.

DEAR TAMMY: On Sept. 22, 2012, after 80 weeks on Billboard's album chart, "21" dropped out of the Top 10, presumably for good.

Even so, "21" has never fallen from the Top 40, but that may soon change. As of this writing (Aug. 1), Adele occupies the No. 35 slot.

Being ranked No. 1 for 24 weeks gives "21" the greatest number of weeks atop the LP charts since the beginning of the SoundScan era (March 1991).

IZ ZAT SO? In an occurrence hugely reminiscent of when Pete Wingfield's "Eighteen with a Bullet" landed at No. 18, and with a bullet (indicating strong sales and upward chart movement), on both Billboard and Cash Box (Nov. 1975), Adele's "21" is now the SoundScan era's 21st album to sell 10 million units.

For now, "21" is No. 21 on that very exclusive list.

Sam Amidon's "Bright Sunny South" Due on Vinyl with Bonus 7” in September

Nonesuch Records released Sam Amidon’s label debut, Bright Sunny South, this spring to critical acclaim. Produced by Amidon with his childhood friend and longtime collaborator Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. Doveman) and legendary English engineer Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club, Vashti Bunyan, R.E.M.) and recorded in London, the record features a band made up of Bartlett and multi-instrumentalists Shahzad Ismaily and Chris Vatalaro. Jazz trumpeter Kenny Wheeler also makes a cameo. On September 24, Bright Sunny South will be released on vinyl with a download of the album and a bonus vinyl 7” disc featuring two previously unreleased recordings, "Won't Turn Back" and an acoustic version of "Weeping Mary"; it is available to pre-order now in the  Nonesuch Store.

Amidon will tour North America throughout September including two nights at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City with Bill Frisell. See the North American tour dates below. For additional details and ticket links, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

The Vermont native/London-based Amidon is known for his reworking of traditional melodies into a new form. In addition to country ballads and shape-note hymns, Bright Sunny South features interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs, including Tim McGraw’s “My Old Friend” and Mariah Carey’s “Shake It Off.” The record also includes a version of “Weeping Mary,” a shape-note hymn that his parents, Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, recorded with the Vermont-based Word of Mouth Chorus for Nonesuch Records on the 1977 disc Rivers of Delight: American Folk Hymns From the Sacred Harp Tradition.

Bright Sunny South follows 2010’s critically acclaimed I See the Sign, which earned Amidon praise from SPIN for his “quirky alchemy … contrasting pretty sounds with violent lyrical undercurrents” and Pitchfork, which said, “[Amidon’s] interpretations are so singular that it stops mattering how (or if) they existed before.”

He bequeathed it and other possessions to his assistant, Jo Jo Johns, to give away or dispose of as she saw fit. She then gave the jacket to friend Anthony Goddard as a birthday present and he has now decided to sell it on at a Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers event in Derbyshire.  The jacket is expected to fetch close to $15,000.

Led Zeppelin To Be Honored In Denmark

September 7, 2013, marks the 45 year anniversary since Led Zeppelin played their very first concert. Now the British rock stars are getting a special plaque right where it all began; in a primary school in Gladsaxe.

In Denmark, Led Zeppelin made themselves into rock history September 7,1968. There was, as we know, many interesting things around the world that year. That there was an English rockband that played on a Saturday night in Gladsaxe Teen Club in the neighborhood of Copenhagen, was nothing special. After all, youth clubs pulled in, every Saturday night, somewhere between 1,200 and 1,600 young people when there was a ball at Egegaard School. And, many British groups came.

Gladsaxe the rock world map

There were usually three bands in one night. The main name that evening was The Yardbirds. They had been there before and they were good ol, seemed both club's board and many fans. But it did not go quite as expected. The British band that was booked long before the summer, ran afoul with each other over in the home city of London and was dissolved the summer. Group guitarist Jimmy Page, however, had a new plan up his sleeve, namely to find new playmates to play with. He found them, and it was this new group that appeared in Gladsaxe Teen Club Saturday 7th September 1968 under the name "The New Yardbirds."

The three new members of the group were singer Robert Plant, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham. They had only practiced a few times together in London, then in the afternoon of September 7th, they knocked on the door at the school in Gladsaxe and asked if they just had to practice a little before the evening's concert. And so, a nice school in Gladsaxe - incidentally, then departed Erhard Jakobsen, who was the mayor of the municipality - both "rehearsing room" and "concert venue" for the world premiere of one of the world's greatest rock bands, Led Zeppelin, will be there.

World premiere plaque

45 years after being given Led Zeppelin a place of honor at the school where it all began, there will be a plaque for the rock historic event . The plaque will be put up at Gladsaxe School, which Egegaard School was called.

It will of course be celebrated, and it happens Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Gladsaxe School, where the plaque will be unveiled.

The project is called "Initiative Group for the selection of Led Zeppelin's world premiere in Gladsaxe" which among others, several of the people who had significant shares of Led Zeppelin's world premiere and documentation of the event, namely Kim Utke, co-founder of Gladsaxe Teen Club and a member of the board, will help to decide which groups play at the club. Jerry Ritz, music and theater producer, was on the road with foreign groups such as The Who, The Animals and Small Faces, was the tour manager for Led Zeppelin in Scandinavia in 1968 and 1969, and Jorgen Angel, rock photographer, who took a series of recent very famous images of Led Zeppelin's first concert which is world renowned for its unique photographs of rock's big names from the 60s and 70s. His pictures can be seen at a major exhibition in The Old Town in Aarhus.

A Record To Your Loved Ones

Have your ashes pressed into the vinyl record of your choosing!  Jason Leach, founder of And Vinyly, has recently announced a new option for those who'd rather die than live without music: Have your ashes combined with 24 minutes of audiophile-quality vinyl. The process is simple: Ashes are delivered to a pressing plant and sprinkled into raw vinyl. That said, it's pretty expensive, costing $4,600 for 30 copies of a record.

**note to self, start saving now for my debut record to be released at my demise!

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Beatles Pressing of the ‘White Album’ Sells For $35,000

One of the holy grails of record collecting, the Beatles first pressing ‘White Album’ with lowest-possible number A0000001 (Apple 101, 1968) has been sold at Heritage Auctions. Most thought a copy of this magnitude would belong to one of the Beatles. The opening bid was set at $10,000.

Well, the auction ended and the price was more than I guessed, the rare White Album sold for an astounding $35,000.00!!

The Beatles White Album Poll shows that 47% of CVR blog readers got it correct (that it would sell for more than $30,000), so congrats to those who were right on target.!

OMG! Hoarding 250,000 Records

Canada’s Apollo Music recently shared a look into the vinyl record hoarder house, a collection of more than 250,000 records which the company purchased last year. “When we first go there we couldn’t even get through the doorways!” they remarked. “It took us 6 months to pack and remove all the records from the house!”

Ozric Tentacles - Strangeitude (double vinyl preorder)

A fan favourite and one of the most highly regarded and consistently strong albums from the Ozric's prolific and illustrious career.

This heavyweight yellow vinyl version comes with a bonus 12" single including a Youth remix of the UK Indie No.1 single, Sploosh!. Both discs are packaged in a gatefold sleeve.

One of the most influential bands to emerge from the UK's festival scene, the Ozrics layer ambient and ethereal landscapes with freeform dub trips, incredible rave grooves and psychedelic progressive rock in an open exploration of music and the spirit.

For over 25 years, the Ozrics have experienced the ups and downs of a rock and roll life lived to the full. The band has flourished through a number of line-up changes, spawned several side projects, created their own record label, put out close to 25 albums, scored a hit record and sold over a million albums world-wide. Throughout this, the basic motivation behind the band's existence has never wavered.

The Ozrics signature blend of hippy aesthetics and raver electronics with spiraling guitars, textured waves of keyboard and midi samplers, and supergroovy bass and drum rhythms continues to evolve and delight fans across the world to this day.

Pre-order for 9th September release.
