Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

5 Must Have LPs From Record Store Day's Black Friday Event

The 29th of November is a great day to be a vinyl fan.  Lots of seminal musicians and bands have lent their name to many special releases curated for the day.  Here's my list, if i could afford them all....

1.  Cheap Trick - The Classic Albums 1977-79 – (Vinyl Box Set) One of America’s all-time greatest rock bands, Cheap Trick, released their first five ground-breaking records within a two year period. The Classic Albums 1977-1979 (LP box set) includes these incredible and influential albums, remastered from the original analog tapes (in 2013), packaged in original LP artwork, housed in a newly designed, limited, numbered LP box. Albums Included: Cheap Trick, In Color, Heaven Tonight, Live Budokan, Dream Police

2.  Flaming Lips – Peace Sword (LP)  Six tracks created for the Ender's Game soundtrack, with a bonus track, "Assassin Beetle--The Dream Is Ending" exclusive to the physical vinyl and CD

3.  Jimi Hendrix Experience – Fire/Foxy Lady (7” Vinyl) Two tracks from their set at the Miami Pop Festival 1968

4.  Metallica – Through the Never Soundtrack Special Edition (LP) 45rpm vinyl 4LP 180gram Limited Edition, numbering style 0001/4000.

5. Doors - Curated by Record Store Day (LP) This album was compiled from tracks suggested by record store owners and the individual tracks were selected by Bruce Botnick and includes rare mono mixes and live tracks. This Doors' album is completely unique and was made especially by the band for record stores only. Two variations of the artwork each feature a hand written track list by one of the surviving band members, John Densmore or Robby Krieger.

Vinyl Record Review - Richie Scarlet - I Plead The Fifth

Richie Scarlet - I Plead The Fifth

****
Rating 4 out of 5 Stars

I receive many press releases and new music release news and if it's on vinyl, I usually let you know about it (just wish people would stop sending me download codes, music is meant to be heard on vinyl, not via small computer speakers and 1's and 0's); but I digress.

Several weeks ago I heard about a new vinyl release from a rock and roller named Richie Scarlet. I have to be brutally honest, I had never heard the name before. However, I asked the record company for a copy of the vinyl so I could give it a listen and write up a review.  Am I glad I did.

For those who don't know the name, Richie Scarlet, (a.k.a. the "Emperor of Rock and Roll") has quite a lengthy resume - having played with the likes of Ace Frehley's Comet, Peter Criss, Mountain, Sebastian Bach, the Alice Cooper Group and many others. A multi-instrumentalist, Scarlet's roots and musical style were influenced by some of the bands and musicians he has played with, as he explains:

"I grew up with T-Rex, David Bowie, and early KISS and then I went from that to into the Sex Pistols and I had always loved Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple," said Scarlet "I usually co-produce my records but this time I turned it over to the guy that I co-produce with Tarik Solangi. I told him “You take over. I want to be featured more as a songwriter more than a guitar hero." A lot of my records I do a lot of guitar, this new record, I had just written most of these songs and I have Bumblefoot from Guns n Roses on there, and the sax player from the Rolling Stones, Arnold Hecht."

So, dropping the needle on the bright scarlet red record, the first cut "Lips Like Morphine" started out slow, almost sounding like an intro from the Steve Miller band, but quickly progressed into a full-bore meat and potatoes rocker ala Alice Cooper and Kiss. But this cut is his own, and you quickly discover that his song writing abilities rival those of the influential musicians he has had the honor to play with.

On the next two selections, "Burning Though Life" and I Don't Wanna Die," Scarlet sounds hauntingly familiar - with a mix of Cooper/Poison playful guitar energy, complete with silly rhymes and galloping riffs. The side is rescued by the subtle melodies of "Lost In My World," which is reminiscent of Styx, which is not a bad thing, as the song builds and you can feel the emotion and passion that Scarlet has for the lyrics; culminating in some progressive keyboards and blistering guitar work for the finale.

Side 2 starts out with a catchy, sophisticated rocker called "Without Your Love" that is a painful confession to love gone by and with a pop-like chorus and guitar rifffing could be on any Kiss record. Drumbeats lead us into the next cut, an acoustic gem called "Indian Souls (1876);" a socially conscious ode to the American Indian, with painfully truthful lyrics and impassioned vocals by Scarlet. But on the next cut "Love Will Find A Way," he tries too hard to channel his emotions and lyrically, it just reaches too much for me.

However that disappointment is offset by the next cut, the Eric Burdon-like "King Heroin," a song that starts slow and easy, yet gently turns into an all-out bluesy rocker. The sax work is impeccable and the words have the sound of a man who has been there before and it's anti-drug message cannot be ignored. The last cut reminds of early Yes, with thumping base lines, mixed with keyboard work and guitar prowess that would make Rick Wakeman and Mark Knopler proud.

There were a couple of duds on the record, but one thing is certain, Richie Scarlet is a talented, inventive musician who can write on his own and become, not just a sideman, but a full-fledged member of modern rock and roll.  I'd love to hear what he does next, and as a musician you always want them coming back for more.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

R.E.M - DOCUMENT

The last album R.E.M. made before migrating to Warner Bros., and very arguably the last start-to-finish masterpiece the band created in its acclaimed career, Document turned Georgia's celebrated sons into mainstream stars. Musically unadulterated and sonically pure, the group's 1987 work epitomizes the unmistakable sound and feeling of college rock during a period where innocence, experimentation, and adventurousness freely collided before being co-opted and branded as "alt-rock." Document is the record to which everyone refers when citing R.E.M. as the premier example of how a respected band is expected to behave, evolve, and maintain its integrity after experiencing mass success. Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes and carefully pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited-edition 180g LP edition of this breakthrough set explodes with unrivaled instrumental signatures, deep soundstages, and faithful tonalities that allow listeners insight into the actual makes and models of the guitars utilized on the recording. Sharp and clean, Scott Litt's widescreen production throws the band into clear relief, magnifying its razor-edged melodies and drummer Bill Berry's foundation-establishing beats. R.E.M. has never sounded so muscular or righteous.

Vampire Weekend - Contra

The scholarly Upper West Side Soweto of Vampire Weekend's debut sounded self-assured, but on Contra, they step out of their ivory tower with just as much confidence. In all senses of the term, this is a sophomore album. The band still flaunts the collegiate sense of discovery that made Vampire Weekend charming -- and sometimes too precious -- but with more maturity and creativity. Another Discovery is just as much of a force on Contra as any of the band's much-noted influences (Afro-pop, Paul Simon's Graceland): Rostam Batmanglij's electro-hip-hop-pop project with Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles, which released its album LP after the pair found acclaim with their day jobs.

David Bowie -  Earthling

Earthling is the 20th studio album by David Bowie, released in February 1997. The album showcases an electronica-influenced sound partly inspired by the industrial and drum and bass culture of the 1990s like Prodigy and Underworld.

This was the first album Bowie self-produced since 1974. Recorded in just 2,5 weeks right after returning from the Outside tour, the album is a snapshot of what Bowie was going through musically at the time. Making extensive use of sampling their own material on high BPMs, the album was the first Bowie album to be recorded digitally.

The first pressing consists of 2000 numbered copies on transparent green vinyl. The second pressing consists of 2000 numbered copies on transparent blue vinyl.   180 gram audiophile vinyl, Gatefold
and Printed inner sleeve

Major Lance - Um Um Um Um Um Um

Major Lance was one of the leading figures of Chicago Soul during the '60s and the top-selling artist for OKeh Records during the decade.

During this time, the majority of his songs were written by his childhood friend Curtis Mayfield. Fittingly for Major Lance's smooth voice, Mayfield crafted urban, uptown and polished songs like "The Monkey Time" and "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um".

Major Lance's mid-sixties output consists of some of the most popular good-time R&B of its era. The Impressions sing background on most of the tracks on Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um (1964). MOV's re-release of this timeless classic is the first reissue since its original release!  180 gram audiophile vinyl  First reissue since 1964!

FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 14, 2013

DEAR JERRY: In New York in the late 1960s, for a while anyway, the Top 40 stations played a song about Friday being payday. It might have a title with similar wording.

It was a male singer with a doo-wop style vocal backing.

The two most common answers I get when asking about this are "Blue Monday" (with "on Friday I get my pay") and "Thank God It's Friday." Neither is correct.

What say you, Mr. Music?
—Emory Stevens, Newark, N.J.

DEAR EMORY: Friday is indeed payday for the fellow in the song ("I'm not sweatin' Monday 'cause my fun day starts right now"), but the full title is just one word: "Payday."

The reason "Payday," a 1970 single (Kama Sutra 507), has a doo-wop feel to it is because it is by Sha Na Na, a 1950s tribute group that was especially popular in the tri-state area.

DEAR JERRY: Just for laughs I put my first name into a song search, and up popped something called "Cora's Melody."

But when I went to YouTube to look for it, all I found was someone playing something on their piano at home.

Now I'm left wondering if there really is a "Cora's Melody."
—Cora Houseman, Traverse City, Mich.

DEAR CORA: There really is a legit record of your melody, and it was a regional Top 40 hit in late 1960 for Bob Thompson and His Orchestra (RCA Victor 47-7795).

In Los Angeles, KRLA radio chose "Cora's Melody" as their Pick to Click for October 21-28. That means they rated this beautiful instrumental as the best new record that week.

DEAR JERRY: My mother, now in her 80s, told me about her and my father being friends with a family in Cincinnati named Greer.

That was in the 1950s.

She recalls they had two daughters who sang on local radio and TV, and called themselves the Greer Sisters.

Knowing I have the Internet, she asked me to do some searching and see if they ever made a name for themselves.

Problem is, the only Greer sisters I can find (Robin and Liza) are authors who weren't even alive until the '70s.

I give up. You are my last resort.
—Keitha M. Fillmore, Anderson, Ind.

DEAR KEITHA: I applaud your effort to get the information on your own, but your search was doomed from the start, because of just one letter.

The Ohio family with the singing sisters is named Geer, not Greer.

Mary Louise Geer and Jo Ann Geer appeared on radio and TV in the Queen City, and elsewhere in southern Ohio, but are best remembered for their appearances on the weekly Midwestern Hayride (1951-1959) on WLW-TV.

In 1954, the Geer Sisters were signed by RCA Victor, resulting on two singles on their subsidiary 'X' label.

Those four tracks are "Unloved and Unclaimed" backed with "Menu Love" ('X' 0079), and "Shanghaied" with "Today I Picked Roses" on the reverse ('X' 0115).

Both records came out on 45s and 78s in 1955, unfortunately, at least for them, a time when their throwback hillbilly style couldn't compete with traditional country artists (Ray Price; Marty Robbins; Webb Pierce; Hank Snow; Eddy Arnold; Johnny Cash; Hank Thompson; Lefty Frizzell; etc., etc.), and had even less of a chance against the juggernaut known as rock and roll.

IZ ZAT SO? Nearly every summer in the '50s, the television audience for the Midwestern Hayride proliferated from regional to national.

The Hayride was a popular vacation replacement show, resulting on a weekly prime time slot for three or four months every year, except 1953.

For six years they were carried by NBC (1951-1956, and 1959) and two years by ABC (1957-1958).
