Vinyl Revival Puts Music World in a Spin

DEAR JERRY: One of the oldies stations recently played "Beechwood 4-5789," by the Carpenters, after which the dee jay asked how many of the listeners remembered telephone exchanges, such as Beechwood.

Well, having been born in the early 1970s I have never used an exchange name to make a call.

Were there more songs with exchange names in the titles?

How about ones with phone numbers in general?

DEAR BONNIE: Hope you didn't think I would just phone this one in.

Telephone exchange words were created in the belief that it was easier for subscribers to remember a supposedly common name (most but not all of them were common) and either four or five digits, than to memorize six or seven numbers.

Of course one only needed to know the first two letters of the exchange name, since only those needed to be dialed.

For example, to call BEechwood 4-5789, you would dial BE4-5789. With the all digit dialing system we have been using for decades, you would connect by hitting the very same buttons, but thinking of it as being 234-5789.

Phasing out exchange names and replacing them with digits began in 1958, but the transition was slow going and took many years to complete, especially in rural areas. Ironically, a trend in recent decades to turn some or all of the digits into letters has been very popular with businesses. Makes sense, as HOT-DOGS is easier to remember than 468-3647.

Spanning 60 years, each of these recordings has a telephone number in the title, either with or without exchange names. To qualify, the number must be in the format of a realistic phone number (five or six characters). An area code or dial-1 (for long distance) is optional.

Excluded are songs with an authentic phone number in the lyrics, but not part of the title. One in this category is "Promised Land" (Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley), in which a call is placed from Los Angeles to Norfolk, Virginia, to TIdewater 4-1009.

Titles are chronological with occasional commentary:

1940: "Pennsylvania 6-5000" (Glenn Miller and His Orchestra)
On early pressings, the title is shown as "Pennsylvania Six-Five Thousand." As it was in 1940, dialing PE6-5000 will still connect you with the main desk at the Pennsylvania Hotel in New York. I just called them to be sure.

1956: "Bigelow 6-200" (Little Brenda Lee)
Backed with "Jambalaya," this was Little Brenda's very first record. The label says she was nine years old, but we know she was really 11. Either way, she was too young to be giving out her number.

1962: "Beechwood 4-5789" (Marvelettes)
A Motown original that was revived 20 years later by the Carpenters.

1963: "LOnesome 7-7203" (Hawkshaw Hawkins)
A No. 1 C&W hit.

1966: "634-5789" (Wilson Pickett)
The first digits-only phone number title. Interesting in that the last five numbers are the same as on "Beechwood 4-5789." Some copies of this record have the sub-title "(Soulsville, U.S.A.)," presumably where you would be calling.

1971: "Echo Valley 2-6809" (Partridge Family)
Yes, 1971 was mighty late for an exchange name; however, in this tune David Cassidy is reminiscing about long ago when he used to dial that number. Album track.

1981: "766-2623 (ROM-ANCE)" (Henry Paul Band)
ROM-ANCE is definitely easier to remember than 766-2623, and potentially more appealing than HOT-DOGS. Album track.

1982: "777-9311" (Time)
Q: "Baby, what's your phone number?" A: "Seven seven seven, ninety-three eleven." Sometimes all you gotta do is ask.

1982: "867-5309" / Jenny (Tommy Tutone)
"Jenny, I know you think I'm like the others before, who saw your name and number on the wall." Tommy Tutone is actually a group whose lead singer is Tommy Heath.

1987: "853-5937" (Squeeze)
Quoth the answering machine: "Angela can't make it to the phone. If you'd care to leave your name and number, please speak clearly after the tone. She'll give you a ring when she gets home."

1989: "(619) 239-KING" (Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper)
The first on the list to include an area code, coincidentally in San Diego and a local call for you, Bonnie.
Mojo is hoping Elvis is still alive and hears this song and sees the music video, and will call him at a real number created just for that purpose. I dialed it and found that it's no longer a working number. Regardless, the video is very amusing. This is an album track, but in 1987, Nixon & Roper had a single (and video) of "Elvis Is Everywhere," indicating a theme of sorts.

1989: "1-900 LL COOL J" (LL Cool J)
Album track.

1993: "1-800 BODY BAGS" (Boss)
Album track. This Boss is a female duo.

1993: "1-900 2LONELY" (David Grey)
The second country tune on the list, and also an entertaining video. Regionally successful, this fine single should have been more of a hit than it was.

1994: "1-800 SUICIDE" (Gravediggaz)
Album track.

1999: "528-CASH" (Project Pat)
Album track.

2000: "1-900 HUSTLER" (Jay Z)
Album track.

The Velvet Underground’s revolutionary mix of boundary-breaking sonic extremism and transgressive lyrical content changed the face of rock ‘n’ roll forever. It was on stage that the band’s unprecedented vision truly came to life. But the band never made any official live recordings, leaving fans with the small handful of live Velvets tapes that have emerged over the years. Undeniably, the most comprehensive and compelling embodiment of the Velvet Underground’s live brilliance is the bountiful cache of 1969 tapes recorded by Velvets fan and future alt-rock guitar icon Robert Quine (who would go on to play with the Velvet Underground’s leader Lou Reed more than a decade later).

The Velvet Underground – The Quine Tapes is a definitive document of the live Velvet Underground. Captured on tape by Quine in San Francisco and St. Louis between May and December of 1969, the recordings feature the Velvet Underground’s final lineup of Reed, guitarist Sterling Morrison, drummer Moe Tucker and bassist Doug Yule. The material includes incendiary performances of such seminal Velvets standards as “I’m Waiting for the Man,” “What Goes On,” “Sunday Morning,” “Femme Fatale,” “White Light/White Heat,” “Venus in Furs,” “Heroin,” “New Age,” “The Black Angel’s Death Song” and “Rock and Roll.” Also included is a rare performance of the “Follow the Leader,” an original song which the band never officially released, as well as stunningly different versions of the epic “Sister Ray.”

These historic Velvet Underground performances are now available on vinyl for the first time ever. To commemorate the occasion, Sundazed Music has designed a lavish six-LP box set, with the discs packaged in three separate gatefold jackets and contained in a deluxe box. The package features incredible new cover art commissioned especially for this vinyl release, plus rare photos, Verve label repro’s, poster/handbill inserts, and detailed liner notes by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke. In keeping with Sundazed’s usual exacting standards, this set has been newly mastered by Bob Irwin from the original source material and is perfectly pressed on high-definition virgin vinyl.

Metallica To Release Soundtrack On Vinyl For Record Store Day's 'Black Friday'

Metallica is set to release a 4 LP and 45 rpm 180-gram numbered limited vinyl edition of "Metallica Through The Never (Music From The Motion Picture)" as part of Record Store Day's "Black Friday" festivities on November 29th.  The release will be limited to 4000 copies.

Original Soundtrack - Dredd 

The stunning soundtrack from Pete Travis' fantastic 3D epic Dredd is now available on 180 gram audiophile vinyl. Scored by the award-winning Paul Leonard-Morgan (Limitless, Spooks/MI5), the edgy, industrial soundtrack sets the perfect tone for the bleak metropolis of Mega-City One in the 'relentlessly entertaining' movie.

The 2000 AD hero is given a mission by the Chief Judge – to road test a rookie Judge, the powerful psychic Cassandra Anderson. The Judges head for a seemingly routine homicide in the notorious Peach Trees mega-block, a 200-storey vertical slum run by the pitiless Ma-Ma clan. When the Judges attempt to arrest one of Ma-Ma's chief henchmen, Ma-Ma shuts down the entire building and orders her clan to hunt the judges down – leaving the two judges in a vicious and relentless fight for survival.

Paul Leonard-Morgan has collaborated as a producer and arranger with artists such as Snow Patrol, Belle & Sebastian, Craig Armstrong, Nada Surf and Mogwai; and has most recently worked alongside producer Mark "Spike" Stent on No Doubt's highly-anticipated new album. Paul was honoured by the US Olympic Committee when chosen to compose the official US Olympic Team Anthem, an honour previously held by John Williams.

Alan Parsons Project - Vulture Culture

The 8th Alan Parsons Project album Vulture Culture was released in 1985 and remains one of the Project's poppiest efforts. The A-side contains concise and catchy songs, whereas the B-side goes into a more experimental direction with songs like "Hawkeye". The album yielded two singles: the opener "Let's Talk About Me" which gathered high scores on European charts and "Days Are Numbers (The Traveller)".

Vulture Culture was initially intended to be a second disc in a two LP set where Ammonia Avenue [MOVLP560] would be the first part. In the end, both albums were released separately.

DEAR JERRY: In a box of old 45s I picked up at a yard sale is a record that belongs on the "How Could This NOT Have Been a Hit" list: "Ain't Nothin' But Love," written and recorded by Baker Knight.

Since I had never heard of this song, I assume it flopped. But how is that possible? It has everything going for it.

Did Baker Knight ever have any hits?

DEAR NOEL: Baker had many memorable hits, but more about that in a moment.

Unfortunately, "Ain't Nothin' But Love" was a miss. Lyrically and musically, this is a perfect rock and roll record, and deserving of a place on our fictitious list.

"Ain't Nothin' But Love" (Jubilee 5342) got off to a good start when Billboard named it a Spotlight Winner and Billboard Pick — one of the most promising new releases for the week of Oct. 13, 1958.

For the record, of the 11 Picks in that issue, only three graduated to their Hot 100.

With peak position noted, they are:

No. 21 "The World Outside" (Four Coins)
No. 44 "Cimarron (Roll On)" (Billy Vaughn and His Orchestra)
No. 63 "Light of Love" (Peggy Lee)

Beyond the Spotlight Picks, there were another 100 singles reviewed and rated that week. Of that bunch, a mere six eventually ranked among the Hot 100, though none were particularly hot. Not a one went higher than No. 45:

No. 45 "Pledging My Love" (Roy Hamilton)
No. 48 "Try Me" (James Brown)
No. 63 "The World Outside" (Four Aces)
No. 67 "Come Prima" (Polly Bergen)
No. 75 "The Fool and the Angel" (Bobby Helms)
No. 98 "Flamingo L'Amour" (Gaylords)

To the reviewers' credit that week, there isn't a single example of a song getting a low score in the magazine that then went on to be a big hit.

Now, you ask if Baker Knight had any hits, and my quick reply was yes he did, but not as a singer.

All of his big money makers are songs he wrote that were recorded by other artists.

His all-time sales champ is Elvis Presley's 1970 million-seller "The Wonder of You," one that also sold well in 1959 for Ray Peterson.

Baker was a good friend of Ricky Nelson's, and Rick waxed several of his tunes, including "Lonesome Town"; "I Got a Feeling"; "Never Be Anyone Else But You"; "Mighty Good"; "I Wanna Be Loved"; "Sweeter Than You"; "I Need You"; "One Minute to One"; and even "Ain't Nothin' But Love," the one that brought us down this path.

Another fan of Knight's writing was Dean Martin, who recorded 11 from Baker's catalog: "Somewhere There's a Someone"; "Nobody's Baby Again"; "Not Enough Indians"; "One Cup of Happiness"; "If You Ever Get Around to Loving Me"; "One Lonely Boy"; "The Right Kind of Woman"; "If I Ever Get Back to Georgia"; "A Place in the Shade"; "That Old Time Feelin'"; and "Sneaky Little Side of Me."

Three country tunes from Baker's pen also come to mind: Dave & Sugar's "I'm Gonna Love You"; Joe Stampley's "You Lift Me Up"; and the 1976 CMA Song of the Year, Mickey Gilley's "Don't the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time."


DEAR JERRY: I've always been intrigued by the song "Cherry Pie." What are the relevant versions and when did they come out?

DEAR HANNAH: Contrary to what probably appears to be premeditated, our coupling of a Baker and a cherry pie is purely coincidental.

The first pie out of the oven was by Marvin and Johnny in September 1954. It seems odd now, but on this single (Modern 933), "Cherry Pie" was the B-side, with "Tick Tock" designated the plug side. No matter, the black music stations played both and the record wound up in the R&B Top 10.

In February 1958, the Tri-Lads revived the tune (Bullseye 1003) and though they didn't chart nationally it made the Top 40 in scattered markets, San Francisco-Oakland being one of the biggest.

Perhaps because of interest in the Tri-Lads record, Kent (part of the Modern family of labels) reissued the Marvin and Johnny original in May, but without success.

The next time around for "Cherry Pie" provided the best-known version, a March 1960 issue by Skip and Flip. Their pie (Brent 7010) was a nationwide smash, peaking at No. 11 on both Cash Box and Billboard.


IZ ZAT SO? Passionate collectors in most fields of interest covet items with errors, and here's a dandy for record buffs.

The Brent labels for both "Cherry Pie," and the flip side "(I'll Quit) Cryin' Over You," were supposed to credit "Skip and Flip," but not all of them do.

Before someone on the production line caught the flub, a few copies got out with the duo named "Slip and Slip."

One might say this was indeed a Slip-up.

Records with the blunder can sell for about $50, roughly five times that of correctly labeled ones.

ZOMBI: Announce Deluxe Vinyl Reissues

On Tour 11/30 - 12/14 with Goblin

In celebration of their recently announced tour with Italian soundtrack kings Goblin, Relapse Records will be reissuing three long out-of-print LPs from Pittsburgh, PA's progressive wizards, ZOMBI. The groups now classic albums, Cosmos, Surface to Air, and Spirit Animal will each be available on deluxe vinyl on January 7, 2014 and can be pre-ordered from Relapse Mailorder HERE.

Their 2004 Relapse debut Cosmos will be reissued as a double LP for the first time in almost a decade, while 2006's Surface to Air will be reissued as a single LP for the first time in North America.  The last of these reissues, 2009's Spirit Animal will be released as a gatefold double LP and will include the bonus track "Infinity," not included on the first pressing.

These titles along with other ZOMBI releases are available for streaming via the duo's Bandcamp page HERE.

Their first US Tour in almost seven years, the 13 day trek kicks off on November 29th with a solo show in Chicago, IL and wraps up on December 14th in Carrboro, NC.  A complete listing of dates is included below.

In Rock (1970): "Among the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever"  - Q Magazine 2000

In Rock is the fourth studio album by Deep Purple and the first with the classic Mk II lineup.

In Rock was their breakthrough album in Europe and would peak at #4 in the UK, remaining in the charts for months. The album was supported by the hugely successful In Rock World Tour which lasted 15 months. For the first time all tracks are credited to the five members of the band.  The 10-minute epic "Child in Time", perhaps the most famous song from this record, would be a concert staple for years.

FIREBALL (1971):  "..showcases the progressive rock and tightly meshed ensemble work that   characterizes Deep Purple at their best"

Fireball is the fifth album by Deep Purple  It would become the first of the band's three UK #1 albums.The album contains seven sizzling cuts. The boogie-inspired "Strange Kind of Woman" single reached #8 in the UK and became a live set fan-favorite up to the present day. The album ncludes such Deep Purple classics as "Anyone's Daughter," "The Mule,""No One Came" and the title track.

MACHINE HEAD (1972): "One of the "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time...an essential hard rock album for any rock music collection."Machine Head is the sixth studio album released by Deep Purple.

Machine Head is often cited as a major influence in the early development of the heavy metal music genre. Commercially, it was Deep Purple's most successful album, topping the charts in several countries following its release. The album reached # 1 in the UK and stayed in the top 40 for 20 weeks. It reached # 7 in the US, remaining on the Billboard 200 for 118 weeks. Includes the Deep Purple classics, "Highway Star" and "Space Truckin'" and "Smoke on the Water" which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Who Do We Think We Are is the seventh studio album by Deep Purple and their last album with singer Ian Gillan until the reunited in 1984. The original album artwork has many quoted articles from newspapers.

One of them is from Melody Maker July 1972, where Ian Paice says:"Deep Purple get piles of passionate letters either violently against or pro the group. The angry ones generally start off "Who do Deep Purple think they are..." The album hit # 4 in the UK and # 15 in the US and Deep Purple became the best selling artist in the USA in 1973.

Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

Originally released in February 1973, "Selling England By The Pound" was the bands biggest selling album so far. Still with singer Peter Gabriel it included the bands first encounter with the singles chart with "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe).  The album cover is a painting by Betty Swanwick called The Dream. The original painting did not feature a lawn mower; the band had Swanwick add it later as an allusion to the song "I Know What I Like."  In 2012, the album ranked seventh in Rolling Stone's "Readers' Poll: Your Favorite Prog Rock Albums of All Time."

Deep Cuts and The Knife Available for the FIRST TIME EVER IN THE UNITED STATES on vinyl 10/29/13

For the first time ever The Knife’s self-titled debut album as well as their extraordinary Deep Cuts are now available on vinyl in the United States via Rabid/Brille Records (via Mute).

In 2001, Karin and Olof Dreijer made their musical debut with a self-titled album on their own label Rabid Records. Deep Cuts, their follow up to The Knife was released in 2003 but not released in the US until 2006. Both albums were only available on CD until now.
