2014 Record Store Day Releases Update

Wax Poetic, the Record Store Day release source, have updated the master list of releases for 2014.

I won't post the list here, as the man says, he spends a lot of time and energy to compile the list, give credit where credit is do and a hearty thank you from vinyl lovers everywhere!

THE ORIGINAL LIST OF RECORD STORE DAY 2014 RELEASES

=============

from our friends at Sundazed

Nilsson - Aerial Ballet

This title is now available for pre-order and will ship to you by the street date of March 18, 2014

Aerial Ballet solidified Nilsson’s craft as a singer-songwriter par excellence. His pen is decidedly sharper in songs like “Together,” “One” and “Don’t Leave Me,” which deal with the insecurities and fatalities of romance. Suicide is explored in “I Said Goodbye to Me,” and the subjects of fame (“Mr. Richland’s Favorite Song”) and fatherhood (“Daddy’s Song”) get their drubbing in scat-filled soft-shoe style. This Sundazed edition presents the 1968 mono mix of this treasured work—scarce then, and virtually impossible to locate in the decades since—from the original master reels, with restored artwork. Also included is “Daddy’s Song,” a tune quickly deleted from the original pressings that features a noticeably different vocal arrangement in its monaural form, and the original first-issue single mix of “Everybody’s Talkin’,” among other highlights. A unique version seen only briefly when issued and virtually untouchable in the intervening years, Aerial Ballet in mono, pressed at R.T.I., is now available on 180 gram vinyl.

TRACK LISTING:
Daddy’s Song
Good Old Desk
Don’t Leave Me
Mr. Richland’s Favorite Song
Little Cowboy
Together
Everybody’s Talkin
I Said Goodbye to Me
Little Cowboy
Mr. Tinker
One
The Wailing of the Willow

Nilsson - Pandemonium Shadow Show

This title is now available for pre-order and will ship to you by the street date of March 18, 2014

Nilsson’s first true album, 1967’s Pandemonium Shadow Show, is an astonishing collection that announces the artist’s unique vaudevillian take on 1960s pop music—a style that brought him to the attention of the Beatles by way of their press agent Derek Taylor. Produced by Rick Jarrard (Jefferson Airplane, José Feliciano) and primarily arranged by George Tipton, the set strikes a balance between Harry’s breathtaking originals (the autobiographical “1941,” the melancholy “Without Her” and the playful “Ten Little Indians”) and a tasteful array of covers (the Beatles’ “You Can’t Do That” and “She’s Leaving Home,” as well as Phil Spector’s gargantuan “River Deep‑Mountain High”), all the while showcasing the vocal prowess of the True One. Plus, the usual benefits of a vintage mono mix are here—a louder rhythm section, more present bass, and an overall sense of ensemble that stereo of the era could rarely capture. A stunning work, pressed at R.T.I., now available from Sundazed in a 180 gram edition with restored artwork.

TRACK LISTING:
Ten Little Indians
1941
Cuddly Toy
She Sang Humns Out Of Tune
You Can't Do That
Sleep Late, My Lady Friend
She's Leaving Home
There Will Never Be
Without Her
Freckles
It's Been So Long

The Left Banke - Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina LP

Long-awaited reissue of 1967 debut by baroque rock legends!

The work of the Left Banke has long been an elusive holy grail for vintage pop fanatics. The legendary “baroque rock” combo’s work ranks with the greatest American music of the 1960s, and remains beloved by discerning pop connoisseurs around the world. Out of print for decades and despite its longstanding unavailability, the Left Banke’s music has attained an ever-increasing level of prestige over the years, and continues to exercise a powerful mystique amongst the group’s legion of admirers. The Left Banke’s 1967 debut album Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina is widely regarded as one of the greatest debut albums of the ’60s, thanks to frontman Steve Martin’s evocative lead vocals, the haunting harmonies of band members Tom Finn and George Cameron, the ambitious songwriting of keyboardist Michael Brown, and exquisite, classically-influenced arrangements that were unlike anything else in popular music at the time. “Walk Away Renée,” released the previous year as the band’s first single, remains one of the era’s most recognizable (and most-covered) standards. In addition to “Walk Away Renée” and its followup hit “Pretty Ballerina,” the album also features such memorable numbers as “She May Call You Up Tonight,” “Barterers and Their Wives” and “Shadows Breaking Over My Head.” The long-awaited reissue of this classic debut on CD and 180 gram vinyl LP has been sourced from the original stereo master tapes and includes the album’s original track listing.

Bob Mould - Workbook 25

Available Tomorrow!

25th Anniversary 2-CD/2-LP editions!

Alt-rock superstars Hüsker Dü called it a day on January 28, 1988, but the band’s Bob Mould would reappear on May 2, 1989 with his first solo album—the incredibly impassioned and personal Workbook.

In addition to writing and producing the entire album, Mould sang all the vocals and played many of the instruments, sharing duties with The Golden Palominos’ Anton Fier on drums, Pere Ubu’s Tony Maimone (bass) and cellist Jane Scarpantoni from Tiny Lights. While always recognized as an astonishing guitarist, Mould’s fretwork on Workbook traveled to levels yet unheard or imagined.

The album has since taken on iconic status, and Omnivore is proud to present the 25th Anniversary edition; Workbook 25

In addition to the original album’s 11 tracks, the first disc of this 2-CD collection adds “All Those People Know,” originally issued as the B-side of the single “See A Little Light.” The second disc is Bob’s complete 1989 performance at Chicago’s Cabaret Metro. 13 of the 17 tracks are previously unissued and the show contains music from the then, two-week old, Workbook, Hüsker Dü favorites and a cover of Richard & Linda Thompson’s classic “Shoot Out The Lights.”

The album will be available on vinyl for the first time since its original release and will be pressed on 2 LPs for sonic superiority. The vinyl edition will also include the B-side, bonus track, “All Those People Know.”

As innovative as Hüsker Dü was, fans had to wonder if Bob Mould could take them on another journey as rewarding. Workbook not only proved he could, but did.

LP Track List:
   Side 1:
 1. SUNSPOTS
 2. WISHING WELL
 3. HEARTBREAK A STRANGER

   Side 2:
 1. SEE A LITTLE LIGHT
 2. POISON YEARS
 3. SINNERS AND THEIR REPENTANCES

   Side 3:
 1. BRASILIA CROSSED WITH TRENTON
 2. COMPOSITIONS FOR THE YOUNG AND OLD
 3. LONELY AFTERNOON

   Side 4:
 1. DREAMING, I AM
 2. WHICHEVER WAY THE WIND BLOWS

Les Claypool's Duo De Twang - Four Foot Shack

How "deconstructed" can a group get? How about just one vocal, one bass, one guitar, and a basic beat supplied by stomping on a mini-tambourine-doohickey? That's exactly what everyone's favorite storyteller/narrator, Les Claypool, is incorporating in his new band, Duo de Twang. While Les is still pulling double duty with the Primus lads, he has also found the time to unite with his old buddy, Bryan Kehoe, who fans will recognize from several past Claypool projects, and also as one of the main actors from Les' hilarious jam band mockumentary, 'Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo.' But unlike Primus, DDT focuses more on the Americana/rootsy side of things - as heard throughout the band's debut recording Four Foot Shack

PILGRIM: Rhode Island Doom Bringers To Release Sophomore Full-Length

Wizards and warriors, rejoice, for the chosen one has returned! The Misery Wizard lives!

Since the early 2012 unveiling of their debut sonic behemoth "MISERY WIZARD", fans and critics alike have patiently yet anxiously awaited the second chapter in the ongoing legacy of the almighty PILGRIM, a three-piece doom metal band from Rhode Island, USA.

Their first release shook the doom metal underground to its core, making a loud, in your face effort to bring doom metal back to its most minimalist and archaic roots, restoring it to its former glory. Their critical success, paired with their controversial interviews and emotionally draining live performances have lead PILGRIM to excellence, traversing the globe performing sold-out shows in multiple countries and playing festivals alongside some of the biggest names in their genre. Two years later, the fabled outfit has returned with a brand new record, the highly anticipated next installment of their aural adventure "PILGRIM II: VOID WORSHIP."

PILGRIM returns more powerful than ever, wielding eight new epic tracks laden with tales of sword and sorcery, death, doom and destruction. Recorded at Moonlight Mile Recording by audio mastermind Mike Moebius, II: VOID WORSHIP delivers an absolutely unrivaled quality of tone and heaviness that many critics felt their original effort MISERY WIZARD had lacked. The band takes a new approach to their song writing, replacing meditated, repetitive hypnosis-inducing dirges with more calculated and demented powerhouse riffs. They build, shape, and climb into frenzied climaxes and fade into sweet sonic releases, molding perfectly crafted rock songs into twisting spires of evil doom metal masterpieces. It is obvious that PILGRIM has matured, both musically and as individuals, in their past two years of global conquest.

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

THE AFGHAN WHIGS - BLACK LOVE

Where some artists write from the head and others from the heart, Whigs' songwriter/front man Greg Dulli writes from the groin. His lyrics are filled with dark images of romantic obsession. Perhaps no other band can play with such restraint, letting musical tension build until it can do nothing other than explode. Dulli in his finest voice can move from desperate screams to a quiet sinister crooning at the turn of a chord.

Black Love was released in 1996 and further built on their trademark mix of Grunge, Indie Rock, Soul and Blues. The band lay out dark, raw Grungy grooves for Dulli to sing his twisted lyrics to; a perfect match. Now available on vinyl for the first time since 1996!

  • Gatefold sleeve

HOWLIN' WOLF - MEMPHIS DAYS VOL.2

Feast your ears with raw and dirty Blues from one of the most influential Blues musicians that ever walked the planet.

The second volume in the Memphis Days series collects all the known Memphis recordings that were either issued or originally offered to Chess Records. As such, it stands as a marvelous collection of Wolf's early 78s for that label. But what truly puts it over the top is the added bonus of a newly discovered acetate featuring several unissued versions of "How Many More Years" and "Baby Ride With Me (Riding in the Moonlight)". The great sound and the performances make it a must-have.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl

  • Available on vinyl for the first time!

SICK OF IT ALL- SCRATCH THE SURFACE

Their first major label release Scratch The Surface (1994) brought mainstream attention toward New York's hardest working Hardcore bands Sick Of It All. Established as THE seminal Hardcore band combining furious Punk Rock with enticing live shows, they conquered stages all over the world, quickly becoming the headlining attraction on many Rock festivals and hardcore shows.

Guitarist Pete Koller's furious riffing and energetic stage antics, Lou Koller's distinctive voice and charisma, drummer Armand Majidi and bassist Craig Setari turned New York Hardcore into the undisputed flag bearer of the worldwide Hardcore movement.

Promoted with videos for "Step Down" and "Scratch The Surface",  the album made a quick impact and has since become a staple in every hardcore kid's album collection. To celebrate this vinyl reissue, we're numbering the first 1500 copies and press 'em on fiery yellow/red vinyl! To top things off, we've included the bonus track "Straight Ahead."
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl

YELLO - ONE SECOND

Dieter Meier, heir turned conceptual artist, joined Boris Blank to form the electronic synth group Yello in the late '70s. Combining samples and beats with Meier's deep and distinctive voice, Yello became experts in combining the suave with the eclectic.

One Second was their 5th album, released in 1987. Highlight on the album are the B-side's opener "The Rhythm Divine" which features Shirley Bassey on vocals, and "Goldrush" which had a marvelous video that got heavy rotation on the music television networks.

This is the first reissue of One Second since its original release. To celebrate its rerelease, we've remastered the album to good effect and included the bonus track "L'Hôtel."

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 17, 2014

DEAR JERRY: For most of the Golden Age, I was a Top 40 dee jay and music director. Part of my off-the-air duties involved keeping up with the industry news and the music charts.

In the early '60s, I recall thinking how easy it would have been to create the Rhythm & Blues surveys, since most of the black music hits were also among the Hot 100.

Simply take the Hot 100 from the top, skipping over the non-R&B hits. What remains are your R&B hits. The order of those songs would be correct, as long as the Hot 100 were accurate,.

Is it possible to go back now and see if this is really how they did it?
—Herb Kline, Gary, Ind.

DEAR HERB: As a former disc jockey and MD (music director), one who hung his First Class Radio-Telephone License at 14 different stations in the '60s and '70s, I can confirm that most MDs relied in part on the Billboard, Cash Box, and Record World music charts to create their own surveys.

Other factors were phone requests and reports from local record retailers on what was selling.

It would be extremely rare to find a local or regional survey that is a line-by-line copy of one of the trade mag charts. Even if the tunes were the correct order, it would give the appearance of laziness.

The quick and easy solution was to just shuffle a few of the titles around.

Yes, it is possible to flash back to the Golden Age. Let's make it a 52-year journey, to February 1962 when the whole world was twisting.

As for your theory, the logic behind it is indisputable, but that does not appear to have been the strategy.

At that time, the R&B chart had only 30 positions. If they simply lifted the 30 highest R&B records from the Hot 100, they would have needed to go from No. 1 to No. 75, disregarding the 45 non-R&B selections.

There are two interesting ways to compare the two charts for the first week of Feb. 1962.

First we'll list every one of the qualifying songs on the Hot 100, in order, followed by their spot that week on the R&B Top 30. Instead of a position number, songs not on the R&B chart that week may have one of the following: PE (a Previous Entry); LE (a Later Entry that charted in the weeks ahead); and NA (Never Appeared on an R&B chart).

Hot 100 / R&B Top 30
1/9 "Peppermint Twist" (Joey Dee and the Starliters)
3/5 "The Twist" (Chubby Checker)
5/1 "I Know" (Barbara George)
7/3 "Duke of Earl" (Gene Chandler)
8/12 "Baby It's You" (Shirelles)
10/13 "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (Tokens)
11/23 "Dear Lady Twist" (Gary (U.S.) Bonds
21/7 "Unchain My Heart" (Ray Charles)
22/NA "Shadrack" (Brook Benton)
24/22 "If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody" (James Ray)
25/6 "Letter Full of Tears" (Gladys Knight and the Pips)
27/LE "Do-Re-Mi" (Lee Dorsey)
32/8 "Turn on Your Love Light" Bobby Bland
33/20 "Smoky Places" Corsairs
34/11 "I'm Blue (The Gong-Gong Song)" Ikettes
37/28 "Tuff" (Ace Cannon)
40/NA "The Greatest Hurt" (Jackie Wilson)
43/29 "Let Me In" (Sensations)
44/4 "Poor Fool" Ike and Tina Turner
46/NA "Chip Chip" (Gene McDaniels)
50/14 "Please Mr. Postman" (Marvelettes)
52/LE "Hey! Baby" (Bruce Channel)
54/PE "Let's Twist Again" (Chubby Checker)
55/30 "There's No Other (Like My Baby)" (Crystals)
62/18 "What's So Good About Goodbye" (Miracles)
63/2 "Lost Someone" (James Brown and the Famous Flames)
69/NA "It Will Stand" (Showmen)
70/LE "Twistin' the Night Away" (Sam Cooke)
73/LE "Twistin' Postman" (Marvelettes)
75/NA "There'll Be No Next Time" (Jackie Wilson)
78/LE "Cry to Me" (Solomon Burke)
81/NA "A Little Too Much" (Clarence Henry)
88/NA "Nite Owl" (Dukays)
91/NA "My Melancholy Baby" (Marcels)
94/24 "Jamie" (Eddie Holland)
95/NA "Ecstasy" (Ben E. King)
97/NA "I Surrender Dear" (Aretha Franklin)
100/LE "Sugar Babe" (Buster Brown)

We have accounted for 21 of the R&B Top 30, leaving nine hits not on the Hot 100 that week.

For these, we indicate their R&B position followed by either PE (a Previous Entry no longer on the Hot 100), or NA (Never Appeared in the Hot 100):

R&B Top 30 / Hot 100
10/PE "Just Got to Know" Jimmy McCracklin
15/PE "Soothe Me" (Sims Twins)
16/PE "But on the Other Hand Baby" (Ray Charles)
17/NA "Baby Don't Leave Me" (Joe Henderson)
19/NA "So Mean to Me" (Little Milton)
21/NA "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong" (Albert King)
25/NA "The Roach" (Gene & Wendell with the Sweethearts)
26/PE "Revenge" (Brook Benton)
27/PE "Moon River" (Jerry Butler)

Note that there isn't a single instance that week of a record holding the same chart position on both the Hot 100 and the R&B chart.

IZ ZAT SO? To review which R&B records were on the local chart in your area (Chicagoland), we chose the WGES Top 30. At 1390-AM, this was the home of such characters as Al Benson, "The Godfather of Chicago Black Radio," and Richard Stamz, "The Crown Prince of Disc Jockeys."

Surprisingly, nearly half (14) of the tunes on their Top 30 do not appear on either of the above lists.
12. "The Town I Live In" (McKinley Mitchell)
13. "Rough Lover" (Aretha Franklin)
14. "Mean to Me" (Joyce Davis)
15. "Back Door Blues" (Eddie Vinson)
16. "You Don't Love Me" (Willie Cobb)
17. "Hung Down Head" (Lowell Fulson)
18. "Sugar Baby" (Paul London)
19. "Play the Thing" (Marlow Morris)
22. "What I Don't Know" (Maxine Brown)
25. "The Roach" (Calvin Carter) (Instrumental version of the Gene & Wendell tune)
27. "Kinda Think He Does" (Carla Thomas)
28. "Now You Know" (Al & Nettie)
29. "Do You Know How to Twist" (Hank Ballard)
30. "Funny How Time Slips Away" (Jimmy Elledge)

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SoundStageDirect

The Royal Sessions by Paul Rodgers

Paul Rodgers, longtime singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with Bad Company, has partnered with 429 Records and is gearing up for the release of “The Royal Sessions”—a lovingly crafted collection of classic R&B and soul songs re-imagined by the iconic rock singer recorded at Memphis’ Royal Studios, historic home of Willie Mitchell and Hi Records, with many of the musicians who played on the original tracks.

Truly a lifetime in the making, Rodgers has come full circle with “The Royal Sessions” as he pays homage to the legendary hits he collected on 45s released on Stax/Volt, Goldwax and Hi Records—recordings by Otis Redding, Albert King and Ann Peebles which made such an indelible impression on the young Rodgers inspiring him to pursue a career as a singer. Produced by Perry Margouleff, “The Royal Sessions” is an extraordinary recording which captures the music in its pure form—live band and vocal takes as performed together at Royal Studios by Rodgers and an all-star roster of legendary musicians.

See The Light by Less Than Jake

Less Than Jake's first proper full length in over 5 years.

Chris says - “What can we say? It’s been one hell of a ride. 21 years in and we still enjoy the process of creating and recording new music. It keeps us sane and happy. Life has a way of bringing things full circle and we are beyond stoked to be releasing our new record as part of the Fat Wreck Chords family. Our new album See The Light is pure Less Than Jake. 13 songs that were written, recorded and produced in our hometown of Gainesville, Florida. You never know what people are going to think when you release new music. All you can do is what comes from your heart and we feel like we have accomplished what we set out to do with these new songs. Hopefully our fans will feel the same passion for this album as we do. See ya on the road!!”

Roger adds, “If you’re expecting retreads and repeats, this record will disappoint. It’s all new songs and new vibes, only recorded in our old school way.” The guys are in the throes of putting together a massive tour across North America in support of the new album, but in the meantime, catch them in the Southeastern US, Japan and even Brazil!

Nonesuch Releases First Nickel Creek Album in Nine Years, "A Dotted Line," April 1

The Grammy Award–winning, multi-platinum selling trio Nickel Creek—Chris Thile (mandolin/vocals), Sara Watkins (fiddle/vocals), and Sean Watkins (guitar/vocals)—officially reunites for the first time since its 2007 self-described “indefinite hiatus” with a new album, A Dotted Line, on April 1, 2014, with vinyl to follow on April 29. The band then tours the US in support of the Eric Valentine–produced album this spring and summer, with shows in New York, Boston, Washington, Chicago, Nashville, and Los Angeles, as well as at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Newport Folk Festival. For all newly added dates, presales begin Wednesday, February 19, at 10 AM local time. A second album track, “Love of Mine,” is streaming below. (“Destination” began streaming here earlier this month.) A Dotted Line is available to pre-order on iTunes and on CD and vinyl in the Nonesuch Store now with an instant download of “Destination” and “Love of Mine.”

As Nickel Creek’s 25th anniversary approached, the band members decided they ought to mark it in some way, so they got together to write music in Chris Thile’s apartment last year. They ended up with six new co-written songs, which they eventually took to a Los Angeles studio, along with one tune by Thile, one by Sean Watkins, and two covers: Sam Phillips’ “Where Is Love Now” and Mother Mother’s “Hayloft.” There they worked with Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Smash Mouth), who had produced Nickel Creek’s previous album, Why Should the Fire Die?.

“We were excited every day to be there,” Sara Watkins says. “Having grown up singing together, there is something natural about our voices and it’s really fun to harmonize. Our voices have come to match each other’s really well. Sean and I are siblings, and Chris is about as close to a sibling as you could get.” Sean Watkins continues: “It feels more natural and easy than it ever did, by far. Getting to spend time alone with our own musical personalities has helped us mature.” “There’s a joyful aspect to Nickel Creek no matter what we’re doing. Things just steer themselves into that sort of place,” concurs Thile. “We will go poke around in the dark corners but always with a heavy dose of optimism.”

Formed in 1989 when Thile and Sara Watkins were eight years old and Sean Watkins (Sara’s older brother) was eleven, Nickel Creek earned a loyal following playing the festival circuit for nearly a decade. The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 2000 to commercial and critical acclaim: it sold nearly one million copies, and Time called the trio “music innovators for the new millennium.” Nickel Creek released two more records: 2002’s This Side, which won a Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy, and 2005’s Why Should the Fire Die?. Beginning as bluegrass child prodigies, Nickel Creek grew into an acoustic band known for its breadth of musical influences—from Bach to Radiohead—and its surprisingly large sound on stage. The New York Times described their music as “postmodern” and “polystylistic,” and USA Today said, “This acoustic trio moves farther and farther from anything Bill Monroe would have recognized as bluegrass...” The band members always explored their own solo work as well as collaborations, which they were able to pursue more fully during their hiatus, and will continue to do.
