U2, Metallica, And Many More Are Preparing Limited Edition Releases For 'Black Friday'

More than 30 artists including Metallica, and Bruce Springsteen, will hopefully help driving shoppers into independent record stores during this year's Thanksgiving shopping rush, by releasing limited edition vinyl as part of "Back to Black Friday."

This event hopes to take advantage of the USs' biggest annual single day of shopping, November 26, (aka Black Friday), and was organized by the creators of Record Store Day, the cooperative project of indie outlets that stock limited edition releases for one day in April.

Fat Possum Re-Releasing T. Rex Getting On Vinyl

Paste Magazine is reporting that Mississippi record label Fat Possum, is planning to remaster and reissue a slew of T. Rex LPs with the first being 'The Slider' (Nov. 23).

The label hasn’t revealed any additional titles slated for remastering yet, but rest assured 'The Slider' won’t be the last T. Rex resurrection (might 'Electric Warrior' be next?).

Triumph's Catalog Being Reissued in Europe

Canadian hard rockers Triumph will have their Rick Emmett era catalog reissued in Europe by Frontiers Records. The ten albums will be released on December 3.

Triumph was formed in Toronto in 1975 by guitarist/singer Rik Emmett, drummer/singer Gil Moore and bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine.

Each of the reissued albums have been remastered and include new booklets with background and lyrics. Frontier will also issue a 10-CD box set of all the album under the name of 'The Diamond Collection.'

John Lennon To Appear On New Coin

It’s been announced that the face of the late Beatle John Lennon is to be celebrated on a coin. The singer, who was killed in 1980, came top in a poll to decide who should appear on the silver £5 Alderney coin with 92% of the vote. Lennon’s nearest rival, with just 4.2% of the vote, was author Jane Austen. More than 30,000 votes were cast in total.

Lennon, who would have been 70 this year, follows in the footsteps of William Shakespeare and Sir Winston Churchill by receiving a coin. Dave Knight, Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint, said: “It’s entirely fitting that John Lennon has been chosen by the public in what would have been his seventieth year.

“The massive proportion of the vote he received shows clearly just how much his untimely death still resonates with the nation."

All Things Must Pass' Getting A Vinyl Reissue

November will mark the 40th anniversary of George Harrison's seminal album 'All Things Must Pass.' Now EMI/Capital has announced that they will reissu the record in a limited edition, numbered, 180-gram vinyl set in its original 3LP configuration on November 26 and it will be available exclusively through independent record stores in the US. 'All Things Must Pass' was just newly remastered at Abby Road Studios from the original analog master tapes, and this limited edition set will include all replicated original monochromic album art, poster and lift-top box packaging.

German Thrash Metallers NECRONOMICON Release Double Vinyl

German thrash metal veterans NECRONOMICON have just released a special-edition vinyl of the band's first album on High Roller Records. This self-titled LP was first made available on CD in 1986, and the vinyl release now includes the original eight tracks and the band's 1985 "Blind Destruction" demo and two additional tracks that have appeared on different compilations.

The double LP comes in a heavy gatefold cover, embossed with the band logo, and with a cardboard lyric insert. It is limited to 666 copies, with the first 100 copies on gold vinyl and including a free woven patch, while the next 200 are on a silver/black "blend" vinyl, and the remaining 366 copies on black vinyl.

Early Rickie Lee Gets Deluxe Mo-Fi Treatment

The opener to this heavily produced album “We Belong Together” owes its existence to Bruce Springsteen, but most of the rest channels Laura Nyro.

Old school talent packaging held sway in the early 1980s and the record labels had the money to invest in their choices. This follow up to Ricki Lee Jones’s debut is a production spectacular the likes of which no longer exist unless the artist has deep personal pockets.

Every note, every gesture, every drum hit and keyboard strike has been choreographed and perfectly shaped behind Jones’s vulnerable nasal whine or delicate wisp of a reminiscence.

She’s sold in the photos as a sex object not as a cool bohemian, which would be more honest and appropriate. The airbrushed album photos look as if Jones’s handlers saw her as a Stevie Nicks type. Her future albums would exude a basic honesty that eludes this overproduced extravaganza but it was a product of the times and of two producers, one of whom came from a father wedded to the “old school.”

So the overproduced aspects—the strings, the opulent backdrops and luxurious reverb and the preciousness of “Skeletons” are to be forgiven.

Mostly, Pirates is a superb sounding jazzy, folky time capsule back to a time when an artist was overwhelmed, probably against her own better instincts by well-meaning packagers. They gave Ricki Lee a fantastic send off on her way to albums that were more intimate, personal and superior communicators of what lurked inside.

No expense was spared here. Just look at who plays! Chuck Rainey, Steve Gadd, Steve Lukather, Donald Fagen, Dean Parks, Buzzy Feiten, Lenny Castro, Victor Feldman, Randy Brecker, David Sanborn and Tom Scott among others. It’s a veritable '80s “We Are the World” assemblage of musicians!

So yes, it’s not rock and roll and it’s not jazz. It’s not pop either. It’s really a producer’s extravaganza in which Ricki Lee Jones takes a backseat to the whims of the executives in charge. It’s a fascinating time capsule to an out of joint time but one where everyone involved was sure they were doing the right thing.

Through it all Ricki Lee Jones maintains her dignity as she pushes against the production onslaught. Just listen to “ A Lucky Guy” on side two. Like much of the rest, it’s a simple, breezy tune but it’s been produced to the extreme. Every note, every cymbal hit and background “ooh, ooh” has been considered and orchestrated. The engineers have recorded every sound as if the life of the whole production depended upon its being perfect and perfectly heard by the listeners.

Mobile Fidelity’s ultra-pure playback chain is the ideal conduit for this precise production and the resulting LP and SACD are both opulent and lush sounding without sacrificing transient speed and inner detail. Rickie Lee almost gets swamped here, but Mo-Fi’s mastering in both digital and analog formats keeps her breathing.

Laura Nyro’s legacy looms large here and if you missed her you owe it to yourself to go back and give her a listen after enjoying this.

Cage The Elephant Plot Release Of Sophomore Album

Cage the Elephant have recently announced that their sophomore album, 'Thank You, Happy Birthday,' is scheduled for release on January 11, 2011.

This 13-song follow-up to their self-titled 2009 debut will be released by Jive Records and features production from Tragedy/Tragedy Studios in Nashville by Jay Joyce. A seven inch vinyl single of the tracks "Shake Me Down" and "Aberdeen" will be released exclusively through Record Store Day's 'Black Friday' event on November 26.

In a press release issued by the band, they noted that they wrote approximately "80 songs' worth of ideas" after they "locked themselves away in a remote Kentucky cabin, listened to and discovered old albums from The Pixies, Mudhoney and Butthole Surfers, and studied interviews with songwriting greats like Bob Dylan and John Lennon."

Food Allergies Rock! Musician Releases New CD for Children Affected by Allergies

Kyle Dine has released a new CD titled "Food Allergies Rock!" for children with life-threatening food allergies. The songs are meant to educate, support, and empower children with this condition.

How To Tell If You Have a Beatles' Butcher Cover

The 'butcher' cover is often considered one of the Beatles' top collectibles, but how do you know if you have a Butcher Cover underneath the 'steamer trunk cover?'

Ways to tell

1) Covers with the "Gold Record Award" seal can NOT be Butchers.

2) On the back, lower-right-hand corner is a number. This will usually be a number, 2,3,4,5 or 6 denoting the Capitol Pressing Plant where that album was pressed.

3) Lp's must have a "slick" type cover. At that time, the Lp jackets were made in three pieces.
a) Cardboard Jacket
b) Back Slick which raps around to the front of the cover
c) The front slick.

4) Sometimes the "Trunk" slick was pasted on sloppily and ended up offset. Then you can see part of the original cover underneath fairly easy.

5) "Pictured" to the right. If you look close, you can see
the bleed-through of Ringos V-neck shirt.

6) Most importantly. You ***MUST*** be able to see the bleed-through of Ringo's black V-Neck shirt or it is NOT a butcher. It is possible that the cover could be so dirty or worn that you may not be able to make that determination.

Country musician Porter Wagoner died in Nashville from lung cancer in 2007 (age 80). Wagoner helped launch the career of Dolly Parton and had his own US TV show, which ran for 21 years until 1981. Wagoner signed his first record deal in 1955, and had hits including "Carroll County Accident" and "Green Green Grass of Home."

Born on this day in 1937, Graham Bond, UK R&B keyboard player, sax, The Graham Bond Organisation. Died 8th May 1974 after committing suicide by throwing himself under a London tube train at Finsbury Park station. Bond worked with Alexis Korner, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker.


History:

In 1955, Buddy Holly, along with his partner Bob Montgomery, opened for Marty Robbins in concert in Lubbock, Texas.

Elvis Presley made his second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956, where the host presents him with a gold record for "Love Me Tender." He performs “Don’t Be Cruel," “Hound Dog" and "Love Me Tender."

After a show at the Pan Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles in 1957, local police told Elvis Presley that he was not allowed to wiggle his hips onstage, the local press also ran headlines saying Elvis would have to clean up his act. The next night, the Los Angeles Vice Squad filmed his entire concert, to study his performance. Wow, severe.......

Buddy Holly appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand in 1958, where he lip-synched "It's So Easy" and "Heartbeat." It would be Holly's last major TV appearance.

It was on this day in 1961 that Beatles manager Brian Epstein would later claim that a young British lad named Raymond Jones walked into his Liverpool record shop and asked for a song called "My Bonnie" by Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers, prompting him to track down the band and eventually sign them. Epstein's personal assistant, Alistair Taylor would later say that he used the name of Jones (a regular customer) to order the single and paid the deposit himself, knowing that Epstein would notice it and order further copies.

On the same day, Brian Epstein went to The Cavern Club to watch The Beatles' lunchtime show. He would later say that he was "overwhelmed by their talent", but in reality he had nothing to compare them to, as they were the first Pop group he had ever seen perform live.

In 1962, the Beatles played at the Empire in Liverpool, their first gig at Liverpool's top theatre. Eight acts were on the bill including Little Richard, Craig Douglas, Jet Harris and Kenny Lynch & Sounds Incorporated.

The studio recording of "My World Is Empty Without You" was made by the Supremes in 1965.

'Diana Ross and the Supremes Greatest Hits' started a five-week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1967.

In 1972, the United States Council for World Affairs announced it was adopting The Who song 'Join Together' as it's official theme tune.

David Bowie played the first of seven sold-out nights on his 'Diamond Dogs Tour' at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City in 1974.

In 1977, Steve Perry made his first concert appearance with Journey at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. He would lead them to 17 Billboard Top 40 entries over the next ten years.

'Nevermind The Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols' was released in America in 1977.

Nick Gilder went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1978 with "Hot Child In The City."



In 1978, Queen played the first night on their 79-date ‘Jazz’ tour at the Dallas Convention Center, Dallas, Texas.

Janet Jackson started a four week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1989 with 'Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814'. Only one of three albums to produce seven Top-ten US singles, (the other two being 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen's 'Born In The USA').

In 1997, R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry announced that he was leaving the group after 17 years, becoming a farmer.

Mary J. Blige started a six week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 2001 with "Family Affair."

The various artists album 'God Bless America' went to #1 on the US chart in 2001, featuring tracks from Bruce Springsteen, Bill Withers, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra.

In 2004, Courtney Love was ordered to stand trial on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon after Kristin King told a Los Angeles court Ms Love threw a bottle and a lit candle at her after turning up at the home of a former boyfriend in the early hours. Ms King told the court Ms Love was "vicious" and "erratic" when she allegedly attacked her while she slept on a sofa on 25 April. She said Ms Love then sat on her, pulled her hair and pinched her left breast in the "worst pinch I ever had", before managing to flee.

Bruce Springsteen performed at John Kerry campaign rallies in Madison, WI, and Columbus, OH in 2004. The appearances are in key states where the voting (Bush or Kerry) could go either way.

Rod Stewart was at #1 on the US album chart in 2006 with ‘Still the Same... Great Rock Classics of our Time’ the singers fifth US #1 album.

The Queen + Paul Rodgers collaborative album, "The Cosmos Rocks," with the lead single, "C-Lebrity," rolled out in 2008. Rodgers, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor co-wrote and co-produced the collection, while playing all the instruments on the 14-track disc. The album is dedicated to late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

"Johnny Cash's America," a CD/DVD package, made its debut in 2008. John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan and Ozzy Osbourne appear in the documentary.

Also in 2008, Booker T. & the MGs, Bob Dylan collaborator (including keyboards on “Like A Rolling Stone”) Al Kooper and Buddy Holly's backing band, the Crickets are among the inductees at the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum Awards Show in Nashville. "These guys wrote them, sang them and recorded them, and it so impressed us in England," says Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards of the Crickets during a backstage interview. "There would probably be no Beatles or Rolling Stones without them." During the ceremony Richards performs with the Crickets.

Top Selling Vinyl Records Sales at eBay - August 2010

Here is the month in review of the top selling ebay vinyl record sales, on a weekly basis, for August of 2010.

First and foremost, a special thank you to Norm and Jane at CC Discoveries.blogspot.com  for putting together this interesting data. Be sure to listen to their popular radio show (Vinyl Record Talk ) for more information about the weekly top 5, vinyl record news and as well as weekly guests.

The honor of our top seller for the month of August 2010 is a test pressing of Bob Dylan's 'Blood On The Tracks' LP which went for a cool eight grand. The Beatles come in second, with a very familar listing, 'Please Please Me' (Parlophone UK Gold Black label 1st Stereo), which sold for a shade under $5,200.

A 78 rpm Vogue Picture Disc by Art Kassel ("Queen For A Day"/"End Of A Perfect Day") sold for $4,207.28. Two more 78's made the monthly list, one from blues legend Robert Johnson ("Kind Hearted Woman Blues"/"Terraplane Blues" Vocalion 03416) which sold for $3,428.92 and another by Freddie Keppard's Jazz Cardinals ("Stock Yard Strut"/"Salty Dog" Paramount) which sold for $2,801.

A great Led Zeppelin effort made the monthly list twice, with one 12" - Led Zeppelin 'Road Box' selling for $3,850 and the other for $3,150. Additionally two Sonny Clark LP's on Bluenote made the list with 'Dial S For Sonny' (Blue Note 1570) going for $3,379 and 'Sonny's Crib' (Blue Note 1576) selling for $3,050. Another Bluenote, Hank Mobley's self titled LP (Blue Note 1568) hit the hammer at an even $3,150.

DEAR JERRY: Most people never heard of Al Green until the 1970s, and the hits “Let's Stay Together,” “You Ought to Be with Me,” and others. Yet I recall hearing Al on the radio in Houston, around 1965.

In researching Al's early years, I found mention of him being with either Hot Line, or Hot Wire, around then. That record could be what I heard.

Some credible sources even say Al Green recorded for the Fargo and Cherokee labels in the early '60s. Others indicate he was singing back then but made no records.

Al Green is a pretty common name, so how do I know who has the story right?

DEAR LINDSAY: Fear not, I'm here for you in times like these.

Al Green, the most successful male R&B artist of the 1970s not named James Brown, did perform in public from the mid-1950s to the mid-'60s, just as you read.

For a few years, circa-1962-'63, Al teamed with high school pals Curtis Rodgers, Palmer James, and Gene Mason, singing as either the Creations or Al Greene and the Creations. Al didn't drop the last 'e' from the family name until 1969.

The Creations did, in 1967, wangle a one-record deal with Zodiac Records, resulting in the release of “Footsteps” backed with “A Dream” (Zodiac 1005).

Later that year, after the Zodiac disc fizzled, Curtis Rodgers and Palmer James started their own label, giving it a lengthy name originally intended for use as a publication: Hot Line Music Journal. Most everyone refers to it as just Hot Line.

Now, since I'd hate to leave you with your wires crossed, what about “Hot Wire”?

That coincidentally is a song Green recorded in 1967, while with Hot Line. “Hot Wire” remained unissued until late 1972, when it became a minor hit (Bell 45,305).

With the former Creations now billed as Al Greene & the Soul Mate's [sic], their first Hot Line single was a soulful Rodgers and James original, “Back Up Train” (Hot Line 15,000).

Issued in November '67, “Back Up Train” steamed right into the Rhythm & Blues Top 5. Unfortunately, Greene and the Hot Line team could not sustain the momentum.

In 1969, and now as Al Green, he teamed with Willie Mitchell and his Memphis-based Hi Records, an assemblage that ran off 10 consecutive years of hit records. Among those are six No. 1 and 15 Top 10 hits.

Those are the recordings Al made before his solo career skyrocketed in 1970s, now let's talk about a couple he didn't make.

First is “I Never Had a Chance,” the same tune Dean Martin waxed in 1957, backed with “The Girl I Love” (Fargo 1004). This is by an Al Green.

However, this fellow, who sounds similar to Arthur Prysock, is not the same as Al Greene, just a 12-year-old in 1958 when this came out.

The other record by another Al Green is “Don't Touch Me” coupled with “Pearly Shells” (Cherokee 201,504), released in 1964.


DEAR JERRY: I love your column in our local paper. Now, I'm hoping you can help me.

A song from the early to mid-'60s that I liked a lot is called “I'm Leaving,” but I don't remember the artist and can't locate it without knowing his name.

It's an R&B tune that I once thought was by Johnny Nash, but, according to the internet, it is not him. Thanks for any help you can give.

DEAR MIKE: You were right all along. There are numerous internet references to “I'm Leaving,” which is indeed by Johnny Nash (Groove 0030).

Recorded in 1963 and released in '64, “I'm Leaving” is one of several Johnny's songs written by his wife at the time, Margaret Nash.

Margaret died in May 1982, in Los Angeles, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident.


IZ ZAT SO? One of Johnny Nash's 1959 singles that didn't become a hit at all, “Take a Giant Step” (ABC-Paramount 10046), brought Nash a different kind of acclaim — an industry award of which he is very proud.

“Take a Giant Step,” the main theme for the film of the same title, won the Silver Sail award at Switzerland's 1960 Locarno International Film Festival “for the humanity and intensity of his performance.”

Nash, cast in the starring role, made his acting debut in “Take a Giant Step.”

The Black Eyed Peas to Release Brand-New Album — The Beginning — On November 30th, 2010

ALBUM IS THE FOLLOW-UP TO GRAMMY AWARD WINNING CD THE E.N.D.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Six-time Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum recording artists The Black Eyes Peas have announced that they will release a brand-new album, entitled The Beginning, on November 30th, 2010, on Interscope Records.

The Black Eyed Peas' sixth album, The Beginning is the follow-up to the group's blockbuster cd The E.N.D. Released in June 2009, The E.N.D. has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide, while spending 52 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 chart. It is also the first album in two decades by a duo or group to yield five Top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, including the No. 1 hits "Boom Boom Pow," "I Gotta Feeling" (which is the best-selling digital song in SoundScan history), and "Imma Be," as well as the Top 10's "Meet Me Halfway" and "Rock That Body." In addition, The E.N.D. was nominated for six 2010 Grammy Awards and won for Best Pop Vocal Album, "Boom Boom Pow" won Best Short Form Music Video and "I Gotta Feeling" won for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group.

While the title of The E.N.D. was a play on words (standing for "The Energy Never Dies"), the new album's title, The Beginning, "refers to what is actually happening in the world right now," says will.i.am. "The Beginning is symbolic of adopting new technologies, such as augmented reality, 3D, and 360 video. It's also about being experimental and taking songs we've liked from the past and playing around with sick, crazy beats."

In keeping with that manifesto, the first single from The Beginning is "The Time (The Dirty Bit)," which is built around a sample from the classic 1987 theme from Dirty Dancing, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," recorded by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. "The song is a celebration of this amazing time in our lives," says vocalist Fergie. "We've been on tour all over the world, and looking out at stadiums full of people who came out to see us – that's as big as it gets. After the shows, we go out to the clubs and meet the fans; those are moments that we have to remember." "Plus the fact that we get to experience it with each other," adds vocalist apl.de.ap, "that's the best feeling ever."

They Are Missed:

Mahalia Jackson (October 26, 1911– January 27, 1972) was an African-American gospel singer. With her powerful contralto voice, Mahalia Jackson became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world and is the first Queen of Gospel Music.



In 1966, English singer Alma Cogan died of stomach cancer (age 34). Scored the 1955 UK #1 single 'Dreamboat', plus 20 other UK Top 40 hits. In the 50’s Cogan was the most consistently successful female singer in the UK and the youngest female act to top the charts during the 50's.

Charles Daly Barnet (October 26, 1913 – September 4, 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. His major recordings were "Skyliner", "Cherokee", "The Wrong Idea", "Scotch and Soda", and "Southland Shuffle."

In 1991, legendary rock concert promoter Bill Graham was killed when the Bell 206B JetRanger III helicopter he was riding in struck the top of a Pacific Gas and Electric transmission tower near Sears Point, northwest of Vallejo and exploded. The fiery crash, which left the helicopter's wreckage dangling near the top of the towering structure, killed Graham (age 60), his girlfriend Melissa Gold (age 47) and pilot Steve Kahn. Graham had founded the Fillmore theaters in San Francisco and New York and had played key roles in supporting such bands as the Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, The Band, Bob Dylan, The J. Geils Band, The Allman Brothers Band and The Rolling Stones.

In 1994, "Kansas City" singer Wilbert Harrison died of a stroke.

Singer Hoyt Axton died of a heart attack in 1999. He is most often remembered for writing Three Dog Night's "Joy To The World" and "Never Been To Spain" as well as Ringo Starr's "The No No Song" and The Kingston Trio's "Greenback Dollar." His mother, Mae Buran Axton, wrote Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel."

In 2004, Bill Read, the bass singer for The Diamonds passed away at the age of 68. After signing with Mercury Records in 1955, The Diamonds became the first Canadian group to make an impact on the US record charts, placing nine songs in the top twenty during the late 1950s. Their most memorable hits, "Little Darlin" and "The Stroll" reached the Top Ten.

Influential BBC DJ John Peel died in 2004 (age 65). His program, “The John Peel Sessions,” helped launch several bands.


History:

In 1935, Judy Garland, at the age of 12, sang on Wallace Berry's radio show on NBC.

Bill Haley and his Comets played the first rock 'n' roll concert in West Berlin, Germany in 1958. Over 7,000 rock 'n' roll fans turned the show into a riot, with 20 policemen injured, as teens from the East and West Berlin skirmished. Oh, that dern rock and roll!

Bob Dylan signed his first recording contract with Columbia Records in 1961.

In 1962, the Rolling Stones, (known as The Rollin' Stones), and consisting of Keith Richard, Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, pianist Ian Stewart and drummer Tony Chapman recorded their first demo tape at Curly Clayton Studios in Highbury, London. They recored three songs, Jimmy Reed's "Close Together," Bo Diddlley's "You Cant Judge A Book By The Cover" and Muddy Waters' "Soon Forgotten."

Also in 1962, Mary Wells headlined the first 'Motor Town Revue' (along with Martha & the Vandellas, the Marvelettes, the Contours, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and more) which began a tour in Washington DC.

Bob Dylan played a sell out concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1963.

“Dance, Dance, Dance” was released by the Beach Boys in 1964.



The Beatles were awarded the prestigious MBE (Members of the Most Honorable Order of the British Empire ) medal at Buckingham Palace in 1965. Many former recipients gave theirs back in protest, to which John Lennon responded "Lots of people who complained about us receiving the MBE received theirs for heroism in the war, for killing people." He continued: "We received ours for entertaining other people. I'd say we deserve ours more." When asked how he enjoyed meeting Queen Elizabeth II, John said "She's much nicer than she is in the photos." According to an account by John Lennon, the group smoked marijuana in one of the palace bathrooms to calm their nerves. Cool....

The San Francisco International Pop Festival got underway in 1968. The weekend event features, Johnny Rivers, Eric Burdon & The Animals and the Iron Butterfly.

Al Green's "Tired of Being Alone," his first hit, went gold in 1971.

Barry White scored his only US #1 album in 1974 with 'Can't Get Enough.'

Dionne Warwick and the Spinners went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1974 with "Then Came You."

Elton John concluded his West of the Rockies US Tour at Dodger Stadium (L.A.) in 1975. He’s the first performer to play the venue since The Beatles in ’66. Fittingly, he does “I Saw her Standing There” and “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.”

The Police played their first U.S. show in Boston at the Rat Club in 1978.

Paul Kantner of Jefferson Starship suffered a brain hemorrhage during a recording session in 1980. After 15 days in the hospital he recovers fully. Whew....

Queen and David Bowie recorded their hit single "Under Pressure" in Montreaux, Switzerland in 1981.

In 1984, 19-year-old John D. McCollum killed himself with a .22 caliber handgun after spending the day listening to Ozzy Osbourne records. One year later, McCollum's parents took court action against Ozzy and CBS Records, alleging that the song "Suicide Solution" from the album Blizzard of Ozz contributed to their son's death. The case was eventually thrown out of court.



Also in 1984, during a seven date Australian tour, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble played the first of three nights at the Melbourne Concert Hall in Melbourne.

Whitney Houston went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1985 with "Saving All My Love For You," (also a #1 hit in the UK). The most overplayed song of the decade.....

In 1991, Ozzy Osbourne broke his foot after an accident on stage at a gig in Chicago, causing him to cancel the remaining dates of a US tour.

In 1992, Pearl Jam set a new record for first week sales when the LP 'Vs.' sold more than 950,000 copies.

Catholic churches in San Juan, Puerto Rico asked residents to tie black ribbons on trees in 1993 in protest against Madonna's first live appearance in the country. Yeah that'll help.....

In 1994, MTV broadcasted the Eagles reunion concert. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmitt, played for an invited audience at Warner Burbank (CA) Studios the previous April.

In 1998, a US federal judge refused to issue an injunction against the sale of MP3. The device was used to play music downloaded from the Internet. The Recording Industry Association of America had brought the case to court. And music distribution has never been the same.

American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken was at #1 on the US album chart in 2003 with ‘Measure Of A Man.’ Really? A man?

In 2004, Elvis Presley came top of a list of the highest-earning dead celebrities. Forbes.com listed the Top 5 dead music earners; 1. Elvis Presley $40m 2. John Lennon $21m 3. George Harrison $7m 4. Bob Marley $7m 5. George and Ira Gershwin $6m.

Also in 2004, Apple launched the U2 Special Edition iPod as part of a partnership between Apple, U2 and Universal Music Group. The new U2 iPod held up to 5,000 songs and featured a red Click Wheel and custom engraving of U2 band member signatures. The iPod was being introduced as the band released their new album ‘How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.’

In 2006, Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor quit the band during the US leg of their world tour. A statement on behalf of the group described the relationship with Andy Taylor as unworkable and one that could not be resolved.

Also in 2006, a private bidder shelled out $15 million for the rights to some of Jimi Hendrix's best-known songs. The auction is organized by the estate of late Hendrix manager Michael Jeffrey. The Hendrix family contests the validity of the auction. In a prepared statement they say, "The assertion that the catalog is the property of (Jeffery's estate) has never been upheld by any court," and adds that they will "vigorously protect its rights to (Hendrix's) catalog." Bear in mind that Hendrix died 35 years earlier so this legal scuffle is at least three decades old.

'The Times They Are A-Changin',' a Broadway musical based on Bob Dylan’s songs, opened in 2006. Prior to Broadway, the show ran for two months in San Diego.

AC/DC went to #1 on the UK album chart with ‘Black Ice’ the Australian bands fifteenth studio album which went on to become a #1 hit in 29 different countries and the second-best selling album of 2008.

In 2009, Wolfmother issued “Cosmic Egg,” the group’s second album but first with the revised line-up of Aidan Nemeth (guitar) Ian Peres (bass/keyboards) and Dave Atkis (drums) – in addition to frontman Andrew Stockdale.

'Life,' an autobiography by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, is in bookstore now. "You can’t imagine that this book could be any better than it is," says Rolling Stone Managing Editor Will Dana. "Keith holds nothing back. It’s funny, gossipy, profane and moving and by the time you finish it you feel like you’re friends with Keith Richards."
