Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Revival Of Vinyl Records A Worldwide Event

3.6 million LPs were sold in the first half of this year according to Nielsen SoundScan, 39% above last year’s level (see chart).

Sales of LPs were up in both Britain and Germany last year. In Spain sales have risen from 16,000 in 2005 to 104,000 in 2010.

In fact, vinyl record sales in the UK have jumped 55 per cent rise from January to June this year (compared to sales during the same period in 2010). Vinyl record sales reached a total of 168,296 units for the first half of 2011, with Radiohead’s King of Limbs album proving the most popular release, shifting 20,771 copies.

Chris Muratore of Nielsen, a research firm, says a little over half the top-selling vinyl albums in America this year have been releases by indie bands such as Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes. Last year’s bestselling new vinyl album was “The Suburbs” by Arcade Fire. Most of the other records sold are reissues of classic albums.

Oliver Goss of Record Pressing, a San Francisco vinyl factory, says it is a mixture of convenience and beauty. Many vinyl records come with codes for downloading the album from the internet, making them more convenient than CDs.

“Whether it is the 'warmer' sound many music fans appreciate, the large-scale artwork of a 12-inch sleeve or its sheer retro appeal, vinyl seems to be capturing the imagination of buyers despite the fact it typically costs twice as much as a CD containing exactly the same music," according to Kim Bayley, Director General of Entertainment Retailers Association.

So whether it is the sound, the tactile experience or just plain fun, vinyl records still thrive in our music landscape!

Local bar puts DJ-ing in the hands of its customers

By WIL PETTY

Musical conversation and booze are a perfect mix.

So, during a slow shift at Blue Sky Bar, bartender Andy Whitehead decided to combine the two.

“I had just got a new record player,” Whitehead said. “I had been toying with the idea of people bringing their iPods, just some way for people to bring their own music and have some ownership of the soundtrack of the bar.”

Originally it started out with Whitehead bringing in 10 to 20 albums that he owned. But now it has turned into a weekly event, dubbed Vinyl Wednesday, with people bringing their own vinyl records and letting the bar listen to it as they converse

'A FUN RIDE': South Walton artist ready for reunion after years of creating artwork for the stars

For Mike McCarty, this weekend is going to be a blast from his past when he reunites with the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Billy Joe Royal, and Chips Moman on stage in Dothan, Ala.

The occasion is Dothan's second-annual Downtown Music Fest to benefit ALS research.

McCarty's most recent claim to fame is being named Walton County's Artist of the Year for 2009.

However, his fame in the music and art world goes back decades.

McCarty built a name for himself in the 1970s and 1980s through his original artwork that graced album covers, posters and T-shirts for some of the biggest names in music while working in Atlanta.

The list of recording artists for whom McCarty has created artwork and logos reads like a "Who's Who" list from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — names such as Little Richard, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Billy Joe Royal, Patti Smith, Jerry Lee Lewis, Willie Nelson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, Peabo Bryson, and others.

Peter Gabriel Releasing New Music On October 11th

On the heels of a limited sold-out U.S. summer tour that earned Peter Gabriel some of the best reviews of his career, he will release a full-length CD New Blood on October 11, 2011 distributed by EMI. A continuum to his recent Scratch My Back release, the New Blood album will feature some of Gabriel’s biggest hits from his prodigious career, reconstructed and re-imagined with orchestral arrangements and recorded live with the New Blood Orchestra. Gabriel hand-selected the songs and enlisted the help of longtime collaborator John Metcalfe for the arrangements and Ben Foster as conductor of the 46-piece New Blood Orchestra.

This treatment is applied with painstaking attention to detail and stunning effect on songs such as ‘Mercy Street’, ‘Digging In The Dirt’, ‘Don’t Give Up’, ‘San Jacinto’ and Gabriel’s all-time classic ‘Solsbury Hill’. The intention was not to simply rework Gabriel’s biggest songs, but rather, find songs that were enhanced by the massed strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. Don’t Give Up – now with Norwegian singer Ane Brun’s vulnerable, cracking vocals replacing those of Kate Bush – rides a stirring, uplifting coda. Where the twinkle of San Jacinto was originally supplied by loops from a Fairlight sampler, piano and bows now provide the otherworldly magic. But probably the most extraordinary reinterpretation is that of Rhythm Of The Heat where Metcalf has recast the original’s extended African drum jam into a dizzying, swirling orchestral maelstrom.

And in front of orchestra, taking centre stage when necessary, retreating into the shadows when not, is Peter’s rich voice. Retaining its trademark emotive power, it returns to lyrics written 20 or 30 years ago, reinvesting them with new meaning and heightened poignancy.

“The orchestra provides different dimensions to the music that weren’t there initially,” confirms Peter. “Rock artists work slowly in studios, building up layer by layer, and one of the great, powerful advantages of an orchestra is all these musicians playing at one moment with all sorts of colors and personalities.”

The album will be available as a standard single-disc and digital download. A special 2-CD version will include the standard album plus an added disc of instrument versions. There will additionally be a heavyweight vinyl version available November 8th that is released with a bonus 7” featuring “A Quiet Moment” and “Solsbury Hill. The filmed concert New Blood – Live in London, recorded October 23rd, 2010 at the Hammersmith Apollo will be available in 3D, blu-ray and standard DVD on October 25th.

TRACKLIST:

1. Rhythm of the Heat
2. Downside Up (featuring Melanie Gabriel)
3. San Jacinto
4. Intruder
5. Wallflower
6. In Your Eyes
7. Mercy Street
8. Red Rain
9. Darkness
10. Don’t Give Up (featuring Ane Brun)
11. Digging in the Dirt

and in music history for today, August 18th:

The original version of "Hound Dog," by Big Mama Thornton, was released in 1956. (i like her version better, more conviction in her singing.....)

In 1958, Italy's leading male vocalist, Domenico Modugno hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with "Volare" (Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu). The song would become the year's best selling record and win three Grammy Awards.

In 1962, Ringo Starr made his debut with The Beatles at the horticultural society Dance, Birkenhead, England, having had a two-hour rehearsal in preparation. This was the first appearance of The Beatles as the world would come to know them: John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

Peter, Paul & Mary's "If I Had A Hammer" was released in 1962.

In 1964, the Beatles arrived in San Francisco in preparation for their first U.S. tour. 6,000 met them at the airport.

In 1971, John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is certified as a million seller in the US. At the time, despite singing that West Virginia was "almost heaven", neither Denver or the song's writers, Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert had ever been there.

In 1973, the Doobie Brothers' "China Grove" was released. A month later it will crack the Hot 100 and eventually reach #15. The song is based on a real town in Texas with the same name, however, the mention of "samurai" is inaccurate, as they were in fact Japanese, not Chinese

The number one album in the US in 1973 was 'A Passion Play' by Jethro Tull (in my opinion, one of their best, although i think it is underappreciated....)

In1977, funeral services for Elvis Presley are held at Graceland. Inside are 150 mourners, outside are 75,000 more. Presley was entombed in a white marble mausoleum at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis near the grave of his mother, Gladys, but would be re-buried at Graceland the following November at his father's request.

In 1977, the Police made their live debut as a three-piece band when they played at Rebecca's Birmingham, England.

In 1982, the City of Liverpool named four Streets after the fab four: John Lennon Drive, Paul McCartney Way, George Harrison Close and Ringo Starr Drive.

Bon Jovi released their "Slippery When Wet" album in 1986.

In 1991, Rick Griffith, died after being forced off the road by a van he was attempting to pass on his Harley Heritage Softail motorbike. He designed album sleeves for Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane and designed countless Rock posters.

In 2003, Tony Jackson, bass player with The Searchers, died from cirrhosis of the liver. The band had a 1964 UK #1 and US #13 single with "Needles And Pins".

In 2006, US film-maker Adam Muskiewicz set up elviswanted.com as part of a documentary exploring the myth that the singer was still alive and offered a $3m (£1.59m) reward for anybody who found Elvis Presley alive. The film was due for release in August 2007, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Presley's death.

In 2008, Pervis Jackson, bass vocalist and original member of the Motown group The Spinners, died of cancer at the age of 70. The band had a series of hits in the 1970s, including "Rubber Band Man", "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" and "I'll Be Around".

In 2010, Kenny Edwards, an original member of the Stone Poneys, died of cancer at the age of 64. The group, lead by vocalist Linda Ronstadt, reached #13 in late 1967 with "Different Drum".

birthdays today include (among others): Jim Ayoub (Mahogany Rush) (58), Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz (Weird Al Yankovic) (55), Everlast (born Erik Schrody) (42), Dan Peters (Mudhoney) (44), Blas Gomez (Slaughter) (44) and Régine Chassagne (Arcade Fire) (34)

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 8, 2011

this is a continuation of a past Mr Music column

When “Diane in Milwaukee” wrote asking how many versions we knew of Dusty Fletcher's “Open the Door, Richard,” we had no idea the answer would — like Fletcher's recording — require two parts.

Last week we itemized the first 15 “Richard” records, all of which came out in either January or February of 1947. In case you missed it, they are:

1. Dusty Fletcher. 2. Jack McVea and His All Stars. 3. Bill Samuels and the Cats 'n Jammer Three (Vocal By Sylvester Hickman). 4. Dick Peterson and the Vocal Yokels. 5. Charioteers. 6. Three Flames (Vocal by “Tiger” Haynes). 7. Count Basie and His Orchestra (Vocal Refrain by Harry Edison & Bill Johnson). 8. Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five. 9. Pied Pipers. 10. Merry Macs (With Orchestra Directed by Sonny Burke). 11. Bill Osborne and His Heptette. 12. Tosh “One String Willie” and His Jivesters. 13. Hank Penny. 14. Big Sid Catlett Orchestra. 15. Walter Brown with Tiny Grimes Sextet.

Our Part 2 of “Open the Door, Richard” picks up right there with more on Walter Brown's recording, and the story behind this Billboard headline: “WOR Slams Door on Richard.”

In a press release dated March 1, 1947, WOR, flagship station of the Mutual Broadcasting Company, announced an immediate ban on Walter Brown's “Open the Door, Richard” (Signature 1006).

Referring to the song in general, and its widespread media attention, as “a nuisance,” WOR went so far as to advise their comedians to “lay off the Richard gags.”

That very same day, while admitting nothing, Signature Records president, Bob Thiels, announced a recall of the Walter Brown discs, “because of some allegedly blue lyrics.”

Thiels respected the might of the Mutual network, with their 400 nationwide affiliates, and knew ignoring their edict was not an option.

Interestingly, the Signature interpretation is the only one with Richard's side of the story. Turns out he wasn't exactly sleeping, as he admits when he opens his window:

“Okay, okay, what's all the excitement about down der man?”

A man in the crowd answers with a question of his own:

“Hey, who are you up der wit yo head stuck out da window?”

“I'm Richard!”

“You are Richard? Well get away from that window and come on down here and open this damn door.”

Richard's retort: “Now listen here. I'm in here havin' myself a ball! I got me a fine mellow little chickie, and the blue lights are on. My ol' wife's way down in Birmingham, Alabama. Then everybody starts hollerin' for me to open the door. Phil Harris wants me to open the door. Bing Crosby wants me to open the door. Jack Benny wants me to open the door. If I wouldn't open it up for them, damn if I'll open up for you. Why can't you give a man a little peace?”

“That's what you been gettin' [peace and piece being homophones]!

You come out here and open that door and give us a little. Hey, wait a minute. Man, this door ain't even locked. Hey, look out Richard. Here we come.”

Returning now to our count:

16. Hot Lips Page (Apollo 1041). Page joined 14 other locked-out roommates of Richard's on Billboard's Honor Roll of Hits. Whatever the ranking each week for “Open the Door, Richard,” they credited the song to 15 different artists — essentially, a 15-way tie.

17. The final 1947 entry came in March when Melo-Tone released an uncredited “Open the Door Richard,” backed with “The Old Rainmaker.” After many years dormant, numerous artists revived “Open the Door, Richard.” None became hits, but here are nine more who at least knocked on the door:

1959: Red Blanchard (Dot 15901); Ernie Barton (Phillips International 3541); 1960: Dusty Fletcher (Savoy 1585, a 45rpm reissue of National 4012). 1961: Bill Doggett (Warner 5502). 1964: Pigmeat Markham (Chess 1891). 1965: Lennie Roberts (Deck 926). 1966: Billy Adams (Sun 401). 2000: Cuban Boys (P&P 7002). 2001: Al Simmons (Casablanca Kids 13T7).

This brings our total to 26 different “Richard” recordings, in just the U.S. Many others exist from beyond our borders.

IZ ZAT SO? As happened with the Beatles album with the recalled Butcher Cover, 19 years later, the ban and recall made Walter Brown's record the most sought-after “Open the Door, Richard” by collectors. It is now valued at about $100, four to six times the other 1947 releases.

FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 15, 2011

DEAR JERRY: Loved your recap of all those records Simon and Garfunkel made before they started using their real names, and gained fame.

You list four singles Paul Simon made for Amy Records, issued as by Tico and the Triumphs but with writing and production credit to Jerry Landis, another of Simon's pseudonyms.

I don't have any of those but I do have “I Wrote You a Letter” by Dotty Daniels, written by D. Goodman. This one says “Produced By Jerry Landis” (Amy 885). Surely this is another of Paul Simon's early works, but since you didn't mention it, I just ask.

Also, are Dotty Daniels and D. Goodman the same person?
—Vince Delmonico, Bakersfield, Calif.

DEAR VINCE: You are correct, the Jerry Landis who produced the Dotty Daniels sessions is Paul Simon wearing one of his many different hats.

We did not mention it because the focus of that piece was limited to Paul and Art's own recordings. Perhaps the label on the A-side of the Amy disc is worn or torn, but I can tell you it is “Play Me a Sad Song,” written by “Jerry Landis.” His original recording of this song came out in 1961 (Warwick 619), and he thought it would be a good choice for Dotty's first record.

Her's is the same basic song, but Simon's new arrangement and production give it a contemporary 1963 girl group sound.

As you suspect, Dotty Daniels is really Dotty Goodman, and “I Wrote You a Letter” is indeed one of her originals, and a good pick for the B-side.

Thanks to my old pal, Kent Kotal, we connected with Dotty. This delightful lady has vivid memories of being a teenager who suddenly found herself and her first session to be the focus of a star-studded gathering at the Amy studio in New York:

DEAR JERRY: I am the artist formerly known as Dotty Daniels, who, as a teenager in 1963, was produced by Paul Simon for Amy Records.

Our first and best-known record is “Play Me a Sad Song,” and while it didn't make the national charts it still sold quite well in some areas.

For example, I know it went to No. 1 on WAVZ, New Haven, Conn., and was a Jack Walker Pick Hit on WLIB in New York.

I don't know if Billboard ever mentioned my record, but Cash Box magazine did make it a Pick of the Week. They even sent someone to interview me, and that meeting was set up at a place right around the corner from the Brill Building. Because I was just a kid, Amy Records asked Paul Kaufman, a songwriter and my friend, to chaperone me at the meeting.

I don't have a copy of whatever they ran, but would love to see it.

Besides Paul Simon's involvement with the session that produced “Play Me a Sad Song” and “I Wrote You a Letter,” we had Cissy Houston, Valerie Simpson, and the Sweet Inspirations (Doris Troy and Dee Dee Warwick) all providing the background vocals.

I specifically recall Cissy being about six months pregnant with Whitney when we recorded those songs.

Whitney Houston wasn't singing on the session, at least not to my knowledge, but she was definitely in the studio with us, albeit still in the oven.

Also, Big Dee Irwin and Freddie Scott were in on that session as music directors. I believe Freddie recorded “Hey Girl” later that same night, after we finished.

Another thing I don't have a copy of is our follow-up single, “A Casual Look” (Amy 891).

Thank you for your interest in my brief recording career.
—Dotty Goodman

Paul Simon circa 1997
DEAR DOTTY: You have some wonderful memories, and we are grateful you shared them.

I spoke to Cash Box's Archivist, Randy Price, who searched but cannot find an interview-based story in any of their issues from the spring and summer of 1963.

However, Randy did find, in the May 11 issue, their selection of “Play Me a Sad Song” as a Newcomer Pick of the Week.

Regarding your first record, they offer this glowing comment:

“It's more than likely that Dotty Daniels' name'll be a topic of disk conversation in the near future. The thrush's bow [songbird's debut] on Amy has that hit stamp notched into every groove. It's an emotional beat-ballad weeper that the chorus-backed songstress waxes with loads of feeling.”

You were in good company in that issue, as another Newcomer Pick was the Tymes' “So Much in Love,” a No. 1 hit that summer.

One month later, Billboard gave you and Big Dee Irwin a brief plug, both coincidentally in the same paragraph.

Their June 22, 1963 issue ran this regional action comment from their Philadelphia correspondent:

“A&L Distributors, Inc. promotion chief, Harry Fink, reports a sleeper in “Play Me a Sad Song” by Dotty Daniels on the Amy label, with a big start for Dimension label's Little Eva and Big Dee Irwin for “Swinging on a Star.”

IZ ZAT SO? That Paul Simon flourished after producing Dotty Daniels is well-documented. However, all of those involved in that session did quite well.

As lead singer of the Pastels, Big Dee Irwin enjoyed one hit, “So Far Away” in 1958, but “Swinging on a Star” became the first hit to credit him by name.

Freddie Scott's “Hey, Girl” became a Top 10 smash, and kicked off four years of charted singles.

After 10 years of singing with Nick Ashford, Valerie Simpson married him (1974) and, as Ashford & Simpson, enjoyed a string of hits in the 1970s and '80s, as singers as well as writers.

Cissy Houston delivered Whitney August 9th. In 1967, after three years of full-time mom duty, she became the lead singer of the Sweet Inspirations.

As for eventual superstar Whitney, she has logged far, far more time atop the albums charts than any female ever.

a reunion or not?

BLACK SABBATH Guitarist Says There Has Been No Official Confirmation Of Reunion

BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi has recently released the following statement regarding the reports of a reunion of the band's original lineup:

"I'm saddened that a Birmingham journalist whom I trusted has chosen this point in time to take a conversation we had back in June and make it sound like we spoke yesterday about a BLACK SABBATH reunion.

"At the time I was supporting the Home Of Metal exhibition was merely speculating shooting the breeze on something all of us get asked constantly, 'Are you getting back together?'

"Thanks to the Internet it's now gone round the world as some sort of 'official' statement on my part; absolute nonsense. I hope he's enjoyed his moment of glory, he won't have another at my expense.

"To my old pals, Ozzy, Geezer and Bill, sorry about this, I should have known better."

and in music history for today, August 17th:

In 1955, Elvis Presley released his first number 1 hit, “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” / “Mystery Train.” It hit the top of the country charts several months later and stayed there for 5 weeks.

In 1960, The Beatles begin their first Hamburg engagement at the Indra Club, Grosse Freiheit, Hamburg, West Germany, playing the first of 48 nights at the Club. The owner, Bruno Koschmider, asked The Beatles to "Mach Shau", or really put on a show, which led to the band screaming, shouting, and leaping about the stage and sometimes playing lying on the floor.

The Kinks "You Really Got Me" was released in 1964.

Also in 1964, the council in Glasgow, Scotland announced that any person with a "Beatles cut" would have to wear a bathing cap in municipal pools because their hair was clogging the filters.

In 1966, as if he hadn't said enough already, John Lennon makes another controversial statement when he expresses his admiration for American draft dodgers.

In 1967, Gary Puckett and The Union Gap recorded "Woman Woman". The song would break first in Cleveland in November and would rise to #4 on the US national charts, but could only manage #48 in the UK.

Deep Purple's "Hush" was released in 1968.

The Doors started a four-week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1968 with 'Waiting for the Sun.'

In 1969, the final day of the Woodstock Festival featured the Grease Band, Joe Cocker, Country Joe and the Fish, Ten Years After, the Band, Blood Sweat & Tears, Johnny Winter featuring Edgar Winter, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Sha-Na-Na and Jimi Hendrix.

Christine McVie joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970.

In 1973, Paul Williams (Temptations) was found dead by police. It was ruled a suicide.

In 1974, Nottingham England's Paper Lace had Billboard's top tune with a song about a gangster shootout called "The Night Chicago Died". After the song became a hit, the band's manager contacted Chicago's mayor Richard Daley, hoping for a civic reception. What they got instead was 'a rather rude letter', ending in ...are you nuts?' Adding to the band's woes, they were forbidden to perform the song 'live' in America at the height of its popularity because of contract issues.

Doris Day releases new album at the age of 87

The former Hollywood star’s comeback record features songs by the Beach Boys and Joe Cocker

By Jonathan Harwood

Post-war Hollywood star Doris Day is making a musical comeback - at the age of 87. The actress and singer has not appeared in a film since 1968 and her last album (a greatest hits compilation) came out in 1994. She is now best known for her work as an animal rights campaigner.

But her latest offering as a singer, My Heart, comes out next month. It is a compilation of unreleased songs produced by her only son Terry Melcher, who died in 1994 aged 62. He was influential in the west coast music scene of the 1960s, working with The Byrds and Beach Boys, and the selection of tunes on the album may surprise those who associate Day with songs like Que Sera, Sera and Move Over Darling. Included on the new record are a version of Joe Cocker's You Are So Beautiful and the Beach Boys' Disney Girls.

Many of the songs were first recorded in the 1980s for her shortlived TV show, but never saw the light of day. They were subsequently remastered by Melcher before he died, but were gathering dust before Sony approached her about releasing a new album.

another great story about the vinyl revival!

Vinyl Records Making a Comeback

By: Nick Hausen

CARBONDALE -- Many of us remember when listening to music meant putting a record on the turntable. In the past 25 years or so, vinyl has been edged out by compact discs and digital music players. Now, records are making some noise in the music business again. An increase in vinyl sales started to emerge several years ago.

"It's going up probably about 50% a year and it really started about five years ago," said Plaza Records Owner Kim Curlee.

It's Official: Reunited Original Lineup Of BLACK SABBATH Working On New Album

BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi has confirmed to Birmingham Mail that the band's original lineup has reunited and is rehearsing for a tour and new studio album.

Iommi and singer Ozzy Osbourne wrote new material in June for a record that will be released next year.

"We're really looking forward to it and I think the stuff we've been writing is really good," said Iommi. "It's more back to the old original stuff."

He added that the reunion has been kept under wraps for some time.

"It's all been very hush-hush. Ozzy's been the worst at trying to hold it back. He's doing a lot of TV and he's being asked stuff about a reunion and he's going, 'Well, I never say never.' He told me, 'I don't know what to say."

Boston’s New Album Will Feature the Late Brad Delp on Vocals

According to a new statement from classic rock favorites Boston, the band is almost done — specifically, “nearly 85% complete” — with work on a new studio album that will feature vocals from late singer Brad Delp.

The upcoming album would be the first new music from the group since the tragic 2007 suicide of Delp, who sang lead vocals on all of Boston’s classic hits, and their first new album since 2002's ‘Corporate America,’ the sound of which represented a radical departure for the band.

INDIE-DANCE POP ROCKERS
THE HUNDRED DAYS RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM “REALLY?”
TODAY, AUGUST 16, 2011

SIZZLING VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE “SEX U” TURNS HEADS, GRABS ATTENTION ACROSS THE INTERNET

TOUR DATES CONTINUE TO BE CONFIRMED THROUGHOUT THE US

Whatever happened to good ole fashioned bombast? We thought it was gone until we heard “Sex U.” The lead-off track on San Francisco’s The Hundred Days’ debut is a rare glimpse into a dying breed of freaky dance-rock songs that are awesome, above all, because they are big and fun and cheeky.”
–RCRD_LBL

“The single, ‘Sex U’, is a freak-out dance-rock anthem for late nights, models, booze, and sexy excesses,”
–AltSounds

"Sex U is a powerful dance hit that makes you feel...dirty, but in a good way!"
–Beautiful Buzzz

Some young bands search for their sound for years, trying many different things in hopes of finding just the right combination. But for San Francisco-based band The Hundred Days, the four twenty-something year old musicians found themselves able to discover and perfect their sound in just one-hundred days and nights by locking themselves in a house until they hit upon the perfect formula. Their debut album, “Really?”, to be released August 16, 2011, is a collection of critically-acclaimed indie-rock gems that are as catchy as they are clever and sonically arresting.

"Really?" is the latest project from the production team of Michael Patterson (Beck, Ladytron, She Wants Revenge) and Nic Jodoin (Great Northern). With driving rhythms, soaring guitars, textural keyboards and powerful vocal melodies, The Hundred Days push indie/alt rock in new directions. Drawing from a variety of influences (post punk, alternative, britpop), the band's familiar, yet intrinsically unique sound has been compared to The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Radiohead as well as contemporary rockers Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery and The Killers. A moody, dynamic indie rock band, The Hundred Days showcase tight musicianship complemented by razor-sharp pop writing capabilities with both sophistication and urgency.

Their first single from the album, “Sex U” and accompanying video has attracted an enormous buzz on the internet, with NME naming it one of the “10 Best Free MP3s”. The video, directed by David Dutton, follows the band on a wild night out on the town where the ladies they meet aren’t exactly what they seem. Press has been clamoring for it after it premiered on Baeble, followed by a featured Video of the Day on Spinner and Consequence of Sound, among other sites.

Explaining the band's ever-evolving sound on the new album, lead vocalist and guitarist Jonathan Smith said, "Over time, we have come to favor live shows where people are dancing. Hence we seem to be moving in a more dance-able direction in the studio, as well."

"We definitely all share a love for English bands - from the Beatles onward - and mostly agree on what we think sounds good," explains Jimmy Chen, guitarist and keyboardist. "But, this band is democratic in every way. There are a lot of different ideas floating around which often clash. The tension adds to the sound.

The band has toured extensively across the U.S. as well as the UK, and has played major festivals and showcases including SXSW, the CMJ Marathon in NYC, Noise Pop Festival and the BFD Festival at Shoreline Amphitheatre alongside Moby, MGMT and Pennywise, among others. The band has scheduled a West Coast tour for August of 2011 with plans for a full US tour to be announced soon.

and in music history for today, August 16th:

In 1957, Buddy Holly and the Crickets played the Apollo Theatre in Harlem and were booed by the mostly Black crowd who were expecting to see an R&B group that also used the name 'the Crickets'. By the end of the night however, the audience was cheering for the Lubbock, Texas band. Also on the bill that night were Roy Hamilton, Shep And The Limelites and Clarence "Frogman" Henry.

Also in 1957, for his first effort at Imperial Records, Ricky Nelson records "Be Bop Baby", which already has 750,000 advance orders. The song will go on to sell over a million copies and reach #3 on the Billboard chart.

In 1962, two years and four days after joining, Pete Best was fired from The Beatles by manager Brian Epstein, who was told by record producer George Martin that he wanted to use a more experienced session drummer on the band's recordings. John, Paul and George had long admired the work of Rory Storm And The Hurricanes' drummer Ringo Starr, who jumped at the chance to join them. After his dismissal, Pete Best would never have any further communication with his former mates.

Also in 1962, Peter, Paul and Mary released their first US Top 10 hit, "If I Had a Hammer", a standard Folk song that had been around since 1949.

In 1965, Mike Smith of the Dave Clark Five broke two ribs when he was pulled off the stage by fans in Chicago.

Earth, a new band featuring Bruce Springsteen, made their live debut in Red Bank, NJ in 1968.

In 1969 - Saturday at the Woodstock Festival featured Quill, Country Joe McDonald, John Sebastian, Santana, Keef Hartley Band, Incredible String Band, Canned Heat, Mountain, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin and the Kozmic Band, Sly & the Family Stone, Who and the Jefferson Airplane.

Also in 1969, Hippie leader Abbie Hoffman is knocked offstage by Pete Townshend while attempting to make a political statement during the Who's set at Woodstock. Later, Townshend says he didn't know it was Hoffman at the time.

In 1974, the Ramones made their live debut at CBGB in New York.

Peter Gabriel announced he was leaving Genesis in 1975.

In 1957, 42 year old Elvis Presley was found dead at his Graceland mansion. Presley's girlfriend, Ginger Alden, awoke in the afternoon and noticed that he was not in bed and found him lying on the floor of the bathroom. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and at 3:30 p.m. he was pronounced dead. After an examination of the body, it is revealed that Presley's body contained butabarbital, codeine, morphine, pentobarbital, Placidyl, Quaalude, Valium and Valmid. It had been five years since the King had a US Top Ten hit with the number 2 song, "Burning Love". His last US number 1 was 1969's "Suspicious Minds". He left an estate valued at 4.9 million dollars, which by 1993 had grown to between 50 and 100 million.

In 1979, the biggest single of the summer, The Knack's "My Sharona" was awarded a Gold record for selling one million copies. The Knack's Doug Fieger wrote the song for his girlfriend, Sharona Alperin, whose picture appeared on the single's cover.

In 1987, thousands came to Graceland in Memphis to honor Elvis Presley on the tenth anniversary of his death.

In 1997, on the 20th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, over 30,000 fans descended on Memphis, Tennessee for a 10 minute mourning, circling his grave. A poll found that almost a third of the fans were keeping an eye out for him in the crowd

In 2002, the Rolling Stones make a surprise appearance at a club in Toronto prior to their Licks tour.

birthdays today, among others include Tim Farris (INXS) (54), Madonna (53), Emily Robison (Dixie Chicks) (39), Gary Loizzo (American Breed) (66) and Barry Hay (Golden Earring) (63)

Resurgence of vinyl records hits Gainesville

Thomas Nassiff

Andrew Schaer isn't comfortable with how young people are going about compiling their music libraries.

He doesn't appreciate the growing population of young adults who are satisfied with listening to music on their laptops or cheap headphones. In his opinion, music deserves better treatment than that.

In his store, right next to his cash register, Schaer has a small sign. There's a picture of an iPod, and the striking, bold font underneath reads, "This IS NOT a music collection." To the right of the iPod, there is a picture of a few bookcases crammed from top to bottom with vinyl records.

The striking, bold font next to that picture reads, "This IS a music collection."

interesting interview with a iconic musician:

Glen Campbell on music, memories and saying goodbye to life on the road

Six months ago, the one-time Beach Boys frontman and country singer par excellence was told he had Alzheimer’s. Now he talks exclusively about his music and his memories.

By Craig McLean

In November 2003, Glen Campbell drove his BMW into another car in Phoenix, Arizona. He then left the scene of the incident and was later picked up at home by Arizona police. Smelling alcohol on his breath, they arrested him and took him to Maricopa County jail. There, Campbell kneed a sergeant in the thigh, which led to an additional charge of aggravated assault on a police officer. He was convicted of extreme DUI (driving under the influence) and sentenced to 10 days in prison; his police mugshot was made public and became a widely viewed internet sensation.

Record Industry Braces for Artists’ Battles Over Song Rights

By LARRY ROHTER

Since their release in 1978, hit albums like Bruce Springsteen’s “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” Billy Joel’s “52nd Street,” the Doobie Brothers’ “Minute by Minute,” Kenny Rogers’s “Gambler” and Funkadelic’s “One Nation Under a Groove” have generated tens of millions of dollars for record companies. But thanks to a little-noted provision in United States copyright law, those artists — and thousands more — now have the right to reclaim ownership of their recordings, potentially leaving the labels out in the cold

10 Things You Didn’t Know About David Crosby

by: Matt Wardlaw

Legendary singer/songwriter David Crosby, an iconic troubadour of American music, who (somewhat amazingly) turns 70 on Aug. 14, has been sharing his songs via a varied configuration of bands for decades now. Of course he's most famous for his work with Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young). As part of that legendary collective, Crosby helped define an era while demonstrating how to compose memorable, timeless music.

Grammy Winner, Everlast to Release New Album, “Songs of the Ungrateful Living,” on October 18th, 2011 via Artist’s Own Label Martyr Inc. Records, in Partnership with EMI

Grammy winner, Everlast to release new album, “Songs of the Ungrateful Living,” on October 18th. Album to be released on artist’s own label Martyr Inc. records, in partnership with EMI Music. First single, “I Get By,” set to impact modern rock radio on August 23rd.

Erik “EVERLAST” Schrody is set to release his first album in three years, “Songs of the Ungrateful Living” on October 18th on his own Martyr Inc. Records. This will be the first release on the label, in partnership with EMI Music. Full of Schrody’s trademark gritty style, the album is awash in the beats and blues that have made EVERLAST a Grammy winner, a chart-topper, an Emmy nominee and a musical trailblazer for multiple generations.

The first single, “I Get By,” set to impact Modern Rock radio on August 23rd is an anthem for our troubled times. Sings EVERLAST, “I voted for change and it’s kind of strange that’s all I’ve got in my pocket.” EVERLAST is not afraid to address the issues facing the world today, both political and personal. “Little Miss America” looks at the state of fame, reality TV and our country. “Little Miss America,” he asks, “where’d you get that scar?” On “Long Time” the big issues become more personal, documenting the struggles that are familiar to everyone.

"The music industry has changed tremendously over the years," explains EVERLAST. “This album is particularly important to me to help express the current chaotic human condition we’re all dealing with. With this in mind I made the decision to take control of the situation and start my own label. ‘Songs of the Ungrateful Living’ is the first album on Martyr Inc. Records in partnership with EMI. Musically and lyrically, this album reflects the diverse musical explorations and personal ebb and flow that I have experienced in recent years."

Masterworks Broadway Celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Classic Broadway Musical Godspell

NEWLY REMASTERED 2-CD SET OF THE ORIGINAL CAST RECORDING PLUS ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 6

First ever Broadway revival begins performances in October

MASTERWORKS BROADWAY proudly announces the release of Godspell - The 40th Anniversary Celebration, a two-disc set that will be available physically and digitally on September 6, 2011. The newly remastered collection includes both the original off-Broadway cast recording from 1971 and the motion picture soundtrack from 1973. Featuring new liner notes by composer Stephen Schwartz, Godspell - The 40th Anniversary Celebration comes out in advance of the first ever Broadway revival, which begins performances at New York City's Circle in the Square Theatre in October.

The score by Stephen Schwartz, the Grammy® and Academy Award®-winning composer of Wicked and Pippin, includes the hit "Day By Day," which reached #13 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in the summer of 1972. "The popularity of the record helped make the show a bigger hit," recalls Schwartz in his liner notes, "and at one point there were ten companies playing simultaneously around the United States, plus other productions in London, Paris, Australia, South Africa, Germany, etc…Today it is hard to believe that forty years have gone by since the original production." New Godspell interview and performance videos featuring Stephen Schwartz will be available for viewing exclusively on MasterworksBroadway.com.

The 2-disc set also includes the soundtrack from the 1973 movie, which was filmed and set in New York City, and memorably featured the musical number "All For the Best" performed on the top of the as-yet-to-be-completed World Trade Center. Godspell introduced a young Victor Garber (Sweeney Todd on Broadway and four-time Emmy® nominee for TV's Alias) as Jesus and features the joyous song "Beautiful City" which was newly written for the film.

Although this immensely successful musical based on the Gospel of St. Matthew now needs little introduction, when Godspell was first produced in 1971, it broke new ground in its treatment of the historical Jesus. It relates the last days of Jesus using dramatized versions of several parables, but quickly becomes something more – a religious experience and a joyous celebration of the family of man.

Godspell opened at the Cherry Lane Theatre on May 17, 1971 and then moved to the larger Promenade Theater in August 1971, where it became one of the longest-running off-Broadway musicals of all time. Godspell moved to Broadway in June 1976 and was Tony®-nominated for its score before ending its run in September 1977, with a combined total of more than 2,600 performances. This beloved musical has become a staple of the theatrical repertoire in schools, churches, and community and professional theatres across the globe and is one of the most licensed titles annually.

For the First Time on DVD The Ed Sullivan Show Motown Collections

The relationship between Berry Gordy's Motown label and The Ed Sullivan Show made music and television history. Soon after the Supremes' debut on Sullivan (December 1964), it was clear that showcasing the latest Motown releases on CBS on Sunday nights (35 million viewers was average) was a way to expose the record company's newest hits and boost the show's ratings. Sullivan introduced nearly all the Motown acts including The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight & The Pips and The Jackson 5. From Hitsville U.S.A. in Detroit by way of The Ed Sullivan Show, these classic performances brought the "Motown Sound" to living rooms across America.

Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) and SOFA Entertainment present Motown Gold from The Ed Sullivan Show (2 DVDs), and, in celebration of The Temptations and Supremes 50th Anniversary, The Best of The Temptations on The Ed Sullivan Show (1 DVD) and The Best of The Supremes on The Ed Sullivan Show (1 DVD). All three collections released on September 13, 2011 are packed with classic Motown performances from The Ed Sullivan Show, taped live between 1964 and 1971, and are fully restored with never before released footage.

Motown performances on Sullivan were followed by a Monday morning sales spike and it was a perfect formula for mutual success. Berry Gordy's dynamic sound aimed to appeal to America's white teenagers and with the Sullivan stage as the entry point for his incredible roster of talent, this show business marriage remained rock solid until the show went off the air. Ed Sullivan and his producer, Bob Precht, were especially proud of the history these two iconic American institutions forged together.

One great Motown group after another was introduced on Sullivan, new releases topped the music charts and Ed's brief chats with the artists all led to a greater acceptance of African-American R&B by white teenagers. This helped Motown to conquer America, and in time, the company became world renown as "The Sound of Young America."

Motown Gold from The Ed Sullivan Show is a 2-DVD (3 Volume) collection with appearances by legendary Motown acts including:

•The Jackson 5 ushering in a new generation of Motown acts with a medley of their No. 1 hits "I Want You Back," "The Love You Save" and "ABC."

•Diana Ross and The Supremes performing their No. 1 hits "Come See About Me," "Someday We'll Be Together" and "Love Child."

•The Temptations doing their No. 1 hits "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and "I Can't Get Next to You."

•The Four Tops with their No. 1 hit single "Reach Out I'll Be There."

•Martha & the Vandellas singing their timeless classic "Dancing in the Street."

•Marvin Gaye's only Sullivan appearance singing "Take This Heart of Mine."

•Young Stevie Wonder captivating the audience with his No. 1 hit "Fingertips Pt. 2" and his classic "For Once in My Life."

•A never-before-released performance of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles singing a medley of the hits "I Second That Emotion," "If You Can Want" and "Going to a Go-Go."

•And many other great Motown Performances!

Bonus material included in this collection features a special performance by Gladys Knight & The Pips of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Houston, Texas, and the Four Tops singing ''Put A Little Love in Your Heart" at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Andrew and Josh Solt, whose company, SOFA Entertainment, owns "The Ed Sullivan Show" library made the following statement about the Motown collection. "We are so pleased that after working on this project for many years, the definitive Motown on Ed Sullivan collection is now available to millions of fans who love the Motown sound. The Sullivan show featured more Motown artists than any other television show and now these timeless live performances can finally be enjoyed by fans of what many believe is the greatest music of the 60's. A considerable amount of work has gone into making sure the sound and picture quality on the discs is optimal. We hope people will be dancing in the streets and in their living rooms when they push play on the Motown on Ed Sullivan DVD collection."

The Best of The Supremes on The Ed Sullivan Show

The Supremes rose from poverty to become Motown's most consistent hit-maker and the most popular female group of the 60's. Along with the charmed circle of Motown singers, writers, producers and players, they rewrote the book on pop music, sang their way into the hearts of millions and made a lasting impression that continues to this day.

With a total of sixteen appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Best Of The Supremes collects some of the group's greatest performances. Included in this DVD is their very first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in December 1964, showcasing their No. 1 hit "Come See About Me." Other timeless performances featured are "You Can't Hurry Love," "My World is Empty Without You," "Baby Love," "Stop! In The Name of Love" and "The Happening." And, for the first time on DVD, this collection includes a full version of "Up the Ladder to the Roof" which is the only appearance by the "New Supremes" after Diana Ross went on to pursue a solo career.

This collection of performances truly showcases why The Supremes are one of Motown's biggest and most beloved acts.

The Best of The Temptations on The Ed Sullivan Show

The Temptations began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. With their flashy suits, distinctive harmonies and precise, split-second choreography, they popularized a refined style of performance that made them a household name. For the first time on DVD, you get the best of their Ed Sullivan Show performances. Included in this collection is the group's very first appearance in May 1967, in which they performed a medley of hits including "My Girl" and "(I Know) I'm Losing You." Other songs featured are the group's No. 1 hit "I Can't Get Next to You," a playful version of "You've Made Me So Very Happy," the Top Ten hit "Psychedelic Shack," and the 1969 hit single "Runaway Child, Running Wild" with Dennis Edwards replacing David Ruffin.

Highlights of this collection include:

•The Temptations' special appearance alongside The Supremes with each group performing a medley of the other group's hits, including "Get Ready," "Stop! In The Name Of Love," and "Baby Love."

•DVD debuting performances by The Temptations of "Hello Young Lovers," "Autumn Leaves," and never-before-released medleys of "Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue)," "All I Need," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "I'll Be There" and "My Sweet Lord."

•The Temptations' last appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1971 in which they performed "Get Ready" and their No. 1 hit "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)." These tender and soulful performances were a fitting farewell to The Ed Sullivan Show.

Today, The Temptations and The Supremes continue to be an essential component of the Motown legacy. The Temptations recent DVD release, Get Ready: Definitive Performances 1965-1972, is currently double platinum, and their recent ICON CD has already sold more than 100,000 copies. The Supremes DVD release, Reflections - Definitive Performances 1964-1969 is also now double platinum. Fifty years later, original fans as well as new fans confirm with steady sales that these performers' true artistry and talent is timeless.
