Bonhams sells late Richard Hamilton's '$31,653' Rolling Stones drug bust art
His iconic work 'Release' shows singer Mick Jagger and Hamilton's art dealer handcuffed together...
One of the iconic images of the Swinging Sixties by the artist Richard Hamilton, who died yesterday, is for sale at Bonhams Print Sale in London on November 29.
'Release' shows Mick Jagger and Hamilton's art dealer Robert Fraser handcuffed together in the back of a police car shielding their faces from photographers after being arrested for possession of drugs in 1967.
The arrest followed a raid earlier in the year on a notorious party at 'Redlands', the house of Keith Richards.
Jagger was sentenced to three months imprisonment for possession of 4 amphetamine tablets. This prompted a famous editorial in 'The Times' under the title, "Who Breaks a Butterfly Upon a Wheel?' protesting at the harshness of the sentence.
The sentence was subsequently reduced to a conditional discharge on appeal.
The print, which was executed in 1972, is based on a photograph of the two men taken at the time. It was produced to benefit an organisation called Release which helped people who had run into trouble with the police.
It will auction estimated at £15,000-20,000 ($31,653).
The unfortunate death of an artist always increases interest in their works - and this piece will undoubtedly benefit from collectors' desires to preserve Richard Hamilton's legacy.
But that's not all... The piece will also benefit from representing a famous and controversial episode from the Rolling Stones' career.
You don't need to be a musicologist to know that the Stones are near the very top of the rock pantheon.
Not surprisingly, their legend has resulted in much activity on the auction markets. Rolling Stones signed photographs have grown in value by 498% over the last 10 years (according to the industry's PFC40 Autograph Index).

When asked if John Lennon scheduled time to work on his drawings and artwork, Yoko Ono is quick to say no.
“He was not a scheduled person,” Ono says. Rather than specifying a time to draw, the music legend would start creating whenever he felt like it, she says.
“It was great that he had this talent of doing artwork because when we were in a conference with all the lawyers, and maybe 20 lawyers together, it’s so boring,” she says. “And he would just start to do drawing. He would never sort of waste any time, he was like that.”
Drawings, sketches and poetry by Lennon will be on view in “Gimme Some Truth — The Artwork of John Lennon,” at Palmer Square in Princeton, Sept. 16-18.

Sound Off | Marling’s latest full of smooth acoustics

On her junior release, British singer-songwriter Laura Marling explores new styles of music and shows a dark side of her that few have seen. Even the album artwork for A Creature I Don't Know is punctuated by shadow: Overtly sexual and raw, it reflects many of the songs on the album. "The album is all about tugging and churning with goodness and darkness," the singer said. Musically and emotionally, Creature reveals a vulnerable part of Marling to the world.
Many of Marling's songs feature just her voice and the guitar at her side. "Dad had taken the time to teach me guitar," she said about learning music in her childhood. "[He] gave me a real passion for guitar that I didn't quite realize until I got out into the big wide world."

Following the critical praise and commercial success afforded the re-mastered, expanded editions of Exile On Main Street, which matched the chart performance of the epochal 1972 album, and returned the Rolling Stones to their rightful place at the top of the British charts in 2010, the extensive reissue of Some Girls constitutes the next step in the band's ongoing relationship with Universal Music Group. This started in April 2008 with Shine A Light, the soundtrack from the stunning concert film directed by Martin Scorsese, and has encompassed the reissues of the Rolling Stones re-mastered, post-1971 studio albums, several live albums and classic compilations, and the exhaustive box-set Singles 1971-2006 earlier this year.
Some Girls holds a special place in the history of the Rolling Stones and demonstrates why they remain one of the most thrilling and influential bands of all time. The 1978 album features a Keith Richards' classic Before They Make Me Run, a signature song he stills performs defiantly to this day. Some Girls documented Mick Jagger's love of 70's funk reflected in Miss You, the dance track that wrongfooted many people, made the club and black charts, and made it okay for other mainstream acts at the time to 'go disco'.
The 1978 album courted controversy because of Jagger's tongue-in-cheek lyrics on the title track, on Miss You and on Respectable, perceived as a retort to the punk and new wave groups who had borrowed so much attitude and copped so many anti-establishment moves from the Rolling Stones. Ironically, the furore around the elaborate Some Girls package, designed by Peter Corriston and featuring the band members in drag – a nod in the direction of the picture on their 1966 single Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? – and likenesses of Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Raquel Welch, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe that hadn't been legally cleared, necessitating a swift withdrawal and rethink.
Some Girls demonstrated the distinctive and definitive riffing from Keith Richards, with its abundance of unstoppable licks and majestic power chords driving the band into its brand new musical direction. This album not only defined him and his playing, but also defined a new era for the Rolling Stones, which Richards since described as a 'sense of renewal'. Some Girls marks the only other time since recording Satisfaction where Richards used an effects pedal to 'elevate' the sound.
The album cemented the position of guitarist Ronnie Wood, who had joined in 1975, and added his trademark slide and pedal steel playing to several of the album's most memorable tracks, including When The Whip Comes Down and Shattered. He also co-wrote the Shattered B-side Everything Is Turning To Gold. Some Girls also marked a move to the Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris for the Glimmer Twins production team of Jagger and Richards. These factors helped what is arguably the group's most focused and dynamic album, driven by the sans pareil rhythm section of drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman. Some Girls featured fewer guest musicians than any Rolling Stones albums since 1971, but the contributions keyboard-player Ian McLagan, Wood's bandmate in The Faces, saxophone-player Mel Collins, and harmonica-player Sugar Blue – discovered busking on the Paris metro – made Miss You in particular sound brighter than ever.
Amongst many eagerly-awaited extras, the Super-Deluxe edition of Some Girls will include a stunning, previously unseen Helmut Newton photo session from 1978, an essay by esteemed author and journalist Anthony DeCurtis putting the album in its cultural context, a 7" single of Beast Of Burden/When The Whip Comes Down in its banned sleeve.

In 1956, Elvis Presley was presented with a Gold record for "Don't Be Cruel", which has just taken over from "Hound Dog" as the best selling single in the US. When the song was recorded on July 2nd, Elvis, along with Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana and The Jordanaires ran through 28 takes of "Don't Be Cruel" before he was satisfied.
In 1961, a group from Hawthorne, California, called The Pendletones attend their first real recording session at Hite Morgan's studio in Los Angeles. The band recorded “Surfin’,” a song that would help shape their career as The Beach Boys.
In 1962, the Four Seasons had their first number 1 hit when "Sherry" reached the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox Best Sellers list. The song was originally titled "Terry", but after considering other names, including "Jackie", after Jackie Kennedy, the group changed the lyrics to "Sherry" after Cheri Spector, the daughter of one of Bob Crewe's best friends. Over their career the Seasons would add three more chart toppers, "Rag Doll", "Walk Like a Man" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" to their list of eleven Top 10 hits.

In 1974, Gary Thain (Uriah Heep) was nearly electrocuted on stage during a show in Dallas. He survives, but says that the other band members didn't show enough concern over the accident and leaves the group soon after.
'Love You Live' was released by the Rolling Stones in 1977.
In 1979, Bob Dylan released the album 'Slow Train Coming.' It was his first religiously themed album. A single called "Gotta Serve Somebody" won a Grammy Award, but the LP alienated many of his long time fans.
Also in 1979, "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", a Country / Rock tune by The Charlie Daniels Band peaks at #3 on the US Pop singles chart. The original line in the song "I done told you once, you son of a bitch, I'm the best that's ever been" was altered to "I done told you once, you son of a gun, I'm the best that's ever been" in order to gain radio air play.
The song is a narrative about the Devil, who comes to Georgia to procure souls. He has not obtained any recently, and is willing to "make a deal" out of desperation. He happens upon a young fiddle player named Johnny, who is minding his own business and playing impressively. The Devil approaches Johnny, and informs him that he, too, plays the fiddle. He then challenges Johnny to a fiddle-playing contest, confident that he is more skillful than the young boy. The terms of the duel are that should Johnny win, he will be given a fiddle made of solid gold, but should the Devil triumph, he gains Johnny's soul. Although he fears that taking the Devil's bet might be sinful, Johnny accepts the terms, proudly telling the Devil that the Devil will regret it as Johnny is "the best there's ever been". The duel commences, with the Devil performing a sinister and powerful piece with the backing of demon musicians. Despite this, the Devil is squarely defeated when Johnny takes his turn to perform. The Devil acknowledges being bested and, true to his word, the Devil presents Johnny with a beautiful golden fiddle. Johnny boastfully informs the Devil that he is welcome anytime to come back for a rematch.

David Gilmour, who joined the band at the start of 1968, said: “He was such a lovely, gentle, genuine man and will be missed terribly by so many who loved him.”
In 2010, the New York Parole Board released the transcript of Mark David Chapman's parole hearing in which he told the board that he had also considered killing either Johnny Carson or Elizabeth Taylor, but John Lennon was "top of the list" the day he gunned down the former Beatle. Bonhams sells late Richard Hamilton's '$31,653' Rolling Stones drug bust art
His iconic work 'Release' shows singer Mick Jagger and Hamilton's art dealer handcuffed together...
One of the iconic images of the Swinging Sixties by the artist Richard Hamilton, who died yesterday, is for sale at Bonhams Print Sale in London on November 29.
'Release' shows Mick Jagger and Hamilton's art dealer Robert Fraser handcuffed together in the back of a police car shielding their faces from photographers after being arrested for possession of drugs in 1967.
The arrest followed a raid earlier in the year on a notorious party at 'Redlands', the house of Keith Richards.
Jagger was sentenced to three months imprisonment for possession of 4 amphetamine tablets. This prompted a famous editorial in 'The Times' under the title, "Who Breaks a Butterfly Upon a Wheel?' protesting at the harshness of the sentence.
The sentence was subsequently reduced to a conditional discharge on appeal.

The print, which was executed in 1972, is based on a photograph of the two men taken at the time. It was produced to benefit an organisation called Release which helped people who had run into trouble with the police.
It will auction estimated at £15,000-20,000 ($31,653).
The unfortunate death of an artist always increases interest in their works - and this piece will undoubtedly benefit from collectors' desires to preserve Richard Hamilton's legacy.

When asked if John Lennon scheduled time to work on his drawings and artwork, Yoko Ono is quick to say no.
“He was not a scheduled person,” Ono says. Rather than specifying a time to draw, the music legend would start creating whenever he felt like it, she says.
“It was great that he had this talent of doing artwork because when we were in a conference with all the lawyers, and maybe 20 lawyers together, it’s so boring,” she says. “And he would just start to do drawing. He would never sort of waste any time, he was like that.”
Drawings, sketches and poetry by Lennon will be on view in “Gimme Some Truth — The Artwork of John Lennon,” at Palmer Square in Princeton, Sept. 16-18.

Following the critical praise and commercial success afforded the re-mastered, expanded editions of Exile On Main Street, which matched the chart performance of the epochal 1972 album, and returned the Rolling Stones to their rightful place at the top of the British charts in 2010, the extensive reissue of Some Girls constitutes the next step in the band's ongoing relationship with Universal Music Group. This started in April 2008 with Shine A Light, the soundtrack from the stunning concert film directed by Martin Scorsese, and has encompassed the reissues of the Rolling Stones re-mastered, post-1971 studio albums, several live albums and classic compilations, and the exhaustive box-set Singles 1971-2006 earlier this year.
Some Girls holds a special place in the history of the Rolling Stones and demonstrates why they remain one of the most thrilling and influential bands of all time. The 1978 album features a Keith Richards' classic Before They Make Me Run, a signature song he stills performs defiantly to this day. Some Girls documented Mick Jagger's love of 70's funk reflected in Miss You, the dance track that wrongfooted many people, made the club and black charts, and made it okay for other mainstream acts at the time to 'go disco'.
The 1978 album courted controversy because of Jagger's tongue-in-cheek lyrics on the title track, on Miss You and on Respectable, perceived as a retort to the punk and new wave groups who had borrowed so much attitude and copped so many anti-establishment moves from the Rolling Stones. Ironically, the furore around the elaborate Some Girls package, designed by Peter Corriston and featuring the band members in drag – a nod in the direction of the picture on their 1966 single Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? – and likenesses of Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Raquel Welch, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe that hadn't been legally cleared, necessitating a swift withdrawal and rethink.
Some Girls demonstrated the distinctive and definitive riffing from Keith Richards, with its abundance of unstoppable licks and majestic power chords driving the band into its brand new musical direction. This album not only defined him and his playing, but also defined a new era for the Rolling Stones, which Richards since described as a 'sense of renewal'. Some Girls marks the only other time since recording Satisfaction where Richards used an effects pedal to 'elevate' the sound.
The album cemented the position of guitarist Ronnie Wood, who had joined in 1975, and added his trademark slide and pedal steel playing to several of the album's most memorable tracks, including When The Whip Comes Down and Shattered. He also co-wrote the Shattered B-side Everything Is Turning To Gold. Some Girls also marked a move to the Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris for the Glimmer Twins production team of Jagger and Richards. These factors helped what is arguably the group's most focused and dynamic album, driven by the sans pareil rhythm section of drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman. Some Girls featured fewer guest musicians than any Rolling Stones albums since 1971, but the contributions keyboard-player Ian McLagan, Wood's bandmate in The Faces, saxophone-player Mel Collins, and harmonica-player Sugar Blue – discovered busking on the Paris metro – made Miss You in particular sound brighter than ever.
Amongst many eagerly-awaited extras, the Super-Deluxe edition of Some Girls will include a stunning, previously unseen Helmut Newton photo session from 1978, an essay by esteemed author and journalist Anthony DeCurtis putting the album in its cultural context, a 7" single of Beast Of Burden/When The Whip Comes Down in its banned sleeve.

In 1956, Elvis Presley was presented with a Gold record for "Don't Be Cruel", which has just taken over from "Hound Dog" as the best selling single in the US. When the song was recorded on July 2nd, Elvis, along with Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana and The Jordanaires ran through 28 takes of "Don't Be Cruel" before he was satisfied.
In 1961, a group from Hawthorne, California, called The Pendletones attend their first real recording session at Hite Morgan's studio in Los Angeles. The band recorded “Surfin’,” a song that would help shape their career as The Beach Boys.
In 1962, the Four Seasons had their first number 1 hit when "Sherry" reached the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox Best Sellers list. The song was originally titled "Terry", but after considering other names, including "Jackie", after Jackie Kennedy, the group changed the lyrics to "Sherry" after Cheri Spector, the daughter of one of Bob Crewe's best friends. Over their career the Seasons would add three more chart toppers, "Rag Doll", "Walk Like a Man" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" to their list of eleven Top 10 hits.
In 1962, the Beatles were called "a nothing group" after an interview with Peter Jones of the "London Daily Mirror." DUH!
Also in 1962, a Chinese newspaper reports what it calls "ugly displays", as teens have been seen dancing the twist in Maoming Cultural Park
In 1964, the Beatles were ordered off the stage at Cleveland's Public auditorium so the screaming crowd could calm down.
In 1965, the Ford Motor Company becomes the first auto maker to offer an 8-track tape player as an option for their entire line of vehicles. Tapes were initially only available at auto parts stores, as home 8-track equipment was still a year away. In 1968, NBC-TV aired a new music program called Soul, a completely Black production both in front of and behind the cameras. Featured guests were Lou Rawls and Martha And The Vandellas.
In 1969, Ed Sullivan released his first and only Rock 'n' Roll record, "The Sulli-Gulli", credited to The Ed Sullivan Singers and Orchestra. The single failed to crack the Billboard Top 40.
In 1969, Deep Purple performed "Concerto for Rock Band and Orchestra" with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at London's Royal Albert Hall.
In 1970, US Vice-President Spiro Agnew says the youth of America are being "brainwashed into a drug culture" by Rock music, movies, books and underground newspapers.
In 1973, Helen Reddy reached the top spot on the Billboard Pop chart for the second time with "Delta Dawn". Her recording beat out a rendition by Bette Midler that was released at the same time and an earlier version by country singer Tanya Tucker, who took the song to number 72.
In 1974, Gary Thain (Uriah Heep) was nearly electrocuted on stage during a show in Dallas. He survives, but says that the other band members didn't show enough concern over the accident and leaves the group soon after.
'Love You Live' was released by the Rolling Stones in 1977.
In 1979, Bob Dylan released the album 'Slow Train Coming.' It was his first religiously themed album. A single called "Gotta Serve Somebody" won a Grammy Award, but the LP alienated many of his long time fans. Also in 1979, "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", a Country / Rock tune by The Charlie Daniels Band peaks at #3 on the US Pop singles chart. The original line in the song "I done told you once, you son of a bitch, I'm the best that's ever been" was altered to "I done told you once, you son of a gun, I'm the best that's ever been" in order to gain radio air play.
The song is a narrative about the Devil, who comes to Georgia to procure souls. He has not obtained any recently, and is willing to "make a deal" out of desperation. He happens upon a young fiddle player named Johnny, who is minding his own business and playing impressively. The Devil approaches Johnny, and informs him that he, too, plays the fiddle. He then challenges Johnny to a fiddle-playing contest, confident that he is more skillful than the young boy. The terms of the duel are that should Johnny win, he will be given a fiddle made of solid gold, but should the Devil triumph, he gains Johnny's soul. Although he fears that taking the Devil's bet might be sinful, Johnny accepts the terms, proudly telling the Devil that the Devil will regret it as Johnny is "the best there's ever been". The duel commences, with the Devil performing a sinister and powerful piece with the backing of demon musicians. Despite this, the Devil is squarely defeated when Johnny takes his turn to perform. The Devil acknowledges being bested and, true to his word, the Devil presents Johnny with a beautiful golden fiddle. Johnny boastfully informs the Devil that he is welcome anytime to come back for a rematch.

In 2008, Pink Floyd keyboard player and founder member Richard Wright died at age 65 from cancer. Wright appeared on the group's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason. Wright wrote a number of songs for the band in their early years, including "Paint Box", "Remember A Day" and "Summer '68" and also contributed prominent vocals to the band's 1971 classic, "Echoes". He will be remembered primarily for "The Great Gig In The Sky", his stately song on 1973's million-selling "Dark Side Of The Moon". David Gilmour, who joined the band at the start of 1968, said: “He was such a lovely, gentle, genuine man and will be missed terribly by so many who loved him.”
