SEAL RETURNS WITH SECOND SET OF SOUL CLASSICS, SOUL 2, DUE FOR RELEASE IN THE U.S. ON JAN 31ST

Seal will release his eighth studio album, Soul 2 in the U.S. on January 31st, 2012, on Warner Bros. Records. The first single “Let’s Stay Together” will impact radio today and will be available digitally November 1st. The collection finds Seal joining forces once again with legendary producer Trevor Horn (Seal, Seal II, Human Being) who shares production duties on the album with Soul producer David Foster (Soul, Commitment). This time Seal brings his silky, inimitable voice to a lush collection of romantic soul classics primarily from the ’70s, including those by Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Al Green, and Teddy Pendergrass, among others.

Seal and Horn teamed up in both London and Los Angeles to record “Lean on Me” (Bill Withers), “Love Here Don’t Live Here Anymore” (Rose Royce), “Love T.K.O.” (Teddy Pendergrass), “Oh Girl,” (The Chi-Lites), “Ooh Baby Baby” (The Miracles), “What’s Goin’ On” (Marvin Gaye), “Wishing On A Star” (Rose Royce). Seal enlisted Foster and Jochem van der Saag to produce “Back Stabbers” (The O’Jays), “I’ll Be Around” (The Spinners), “Let’s Stay Together” (Al Green), and “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” (The Delfonics), all of which were recorded in Los Angeles.

“In my twenty years on a journey in the music industry, two things remain constants, the voice and more importantly, the song. I continue to make music because of the chance that this day could indeed be the day I write another great song or have the opportunity to sing one. The songs on Soul 2 are a natural evolution in the arc of soul music from the songs on the first Soul album — and they are all-time classics,” said Seal. “One more very important reason why I still make music is the ‘gift of collaboration’. I’ve been fortunate to work with two such industry greats as Trevor Horn and David Foster on this album and I they continue to inspire me each and every day.”Horn says “Working with Seal is like making music again….even I’d buy this record!”

Released in November 2008, Soul was a hit around the world, earning gold certifications in Australia, Italy, and Sweden, platinum certifications in Canada, Switzerland, and the U.K., and double-platinum awards in Belgium and on the European Album chart. Soul was a Diamond-seller in France where it peaked at No. 1 on the album chart and remained there for 13 consecutive weeks.

The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn New Solo Debut

The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn will give us a taste of his new debut solo album with the release of a two-song single. “Honolulu Blues," backed by the b-side “Rented Room” will be released by Vagrant Records on a limited edition 7" vinyl for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event on November 25th. A digital release will follow on November 29th.

Give Up the Ghost/American Nightmare Vinyl Reissues

Seminal hardcore rockers Give Up The Ghost (formerly American Nightmare) have just announced plans to reissue both of their albums (Background Music and We're Down Til We're Underground) on vinyl. Each album will be in a special gatefold jacket with revamped artwork and packaging. These records have been remastered by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering (Converge, Fucked Up), and will include MP3 download codes. Deathwish Inc. is handling the vinyl reissues.

Classic ANVIL Albums To Be Reissued

Three classic albums from Canadian metal legends ANVIL — "Strength Of Steel" (1987), "Pound For Pound" (1988) and "Worth The Weight" (1991) will be made available in Europe through SPV/Steamhammer on November 25 - as a high-class digipak re-releases with new booklets, including liner notes from Steve "Lips" Kudlow (guitar, vocals) and Robb Reiner (drums )and gatefold LP versions with colored vinyl and printed innersleeves. This will mark the first time "Worth The Weight" will have been reissued on vinyl.

In 1956, Elvis Presley makes his second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, where the host presents him with a Gold record for "Love Me Tender".

In 1958, Buddy Holly appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, where he lip-synched “It’s So Easy” and “Heartbeat.” It would be Holly’s last major TV appearance.



In 1961, it was on this day that Beatles manager Brian Epstein would later claim that a young British lad named Raymond Jones walked into his Liverpool record shop and asked for a song called "My Bonnie" by Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers, prompting him to track down the band and eventually sign them. Epstein's personal assistant, Alistair Taylor would later say that he used the name of Jones (a regular customer) to order the single and paid the deposit himself, knowing that Epstein would notice it and order further copies.

In 1962, the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany was the site of a historic Rock and Roll get together when The Beatles and Little Richard appeared for a two week engagement.

In 1967, Diana Ross And The Supremes' 'Greatest Hits' started a five week run at #1 on the US album chart. Although original member Florence Ballard is pictured on the cover and sings on all the tracks, by the time the L.P. was released, she had been fired from the group and replaced by Cindy Birdsong.

In 1974, David Bowie played the first of seven sold-out nights on his Diamond Dogs Tour at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

In 1977, Steve Perry makes his first concert appearance with Journey at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. He would lead them to 17 Billboard Top 40 entries over the next ten years.

In 1989, Janet Jackson started a four-week run at #1 on the US album chart with Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814. At the time it was one of only three albums to produce seven Top 10 US singles (the other two being Thriller by her brother Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA).

In 1997, R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry announced that he was leaving the group after 17 years to become a farmer.

In 2006, Rod Stewart was at #1 on the US album chart with 'Still the Same... Great Rock Classics of our Time,' the singer’s fifth US #1 album.

In 2007, country musician legend Porter Wagoner died in Nashville, at age 80, from lung cancer. Wagoner helped launch the career of Dolly Parton and had his own TV show, which ran for 21 years. Wagoner signed his first record deal in 1955, and had hits including “Carroll County Accident” and “Green Green Grass of Home.”

Is SoundScan Under Reporting US Vinyl Sales?

According to Vince Slusarz, owner of New York-based vinyl pressing plant Gotta Groove, sales of vinyl may be even higher than claimed. Speaking to the New York Times, Slusarz said: “SoundScan only [logs] about 15% [of sales, because] the majority of the stuff we press, it doesn’t even have a barcode”.

US record sales tracker Nielsen SoundScan, like the Official Charts Company in the UK, are reporting a rise in vinyl sales this year. Last year SoundScan reported 2.8 million vinyl sales, up from 2.5 million in 2009. This year Nielsen SoundScan says the increase could be as much as 40%, to just under four million. But if Slusarz figures are correct, and the same is true across the entire range of vinyl sold in the US, sales could actually be as high as nineteen million.

Florence + The Machine Vinyl Factory Release

The Vinyl Factory have recently teamed up with Island Records to release a very limited12-inch of the new Florence + The Machine single, "Shake It Out." The vinyl is slated for release on October 31, the same day as the new Florence album 'Ceremonials and will be the first in a series of limited-edition Florence +The Machine releases from The Vinyl Factory.

The release is limited to 500 copies and features cover photography by Karl Lagerfeld, a sleeve that is screen printed on white card, 180-gram white vinyl and silver inner sleeves.

Orange Goblin To Release New Album

Orange Goblin are set to release their new studio album, 'A Eulogy For The Damned,' on Monday February 13, 2012 in the UK/rest of world and February 14, 2012 in the US. 'A Eulogy For The Damned' is the band's seventh studio album but first for new label home, Candlelight Records. The ten-track offering was recorded at The Animal Farm studio in South London, UK, produced and engineered by Jamie Dodd and mastered by two-time Grammy-nominated Pink Floyd engineer Andy Jackson at Tube Mastering. Patti Smith, Ke$ha, Adele And More To Cover Bob Dylan Songs for Charity Album

Patti Smith, Ke$ha and Adele are set to contribute covers of Bob Dylan songs for a new tribute album. The album is called 'Chimes Of Freedom: Songs Of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International' and will be released in early 2012. All the proceeds from the compilation will be donated to Amnesty International. The compilation will also features covers of the folk legend from the likes of Sting, The Dave Matthews Band, Miley Cyrus and My Morning Jacket.

Adele will contribute her cover of Dylan's 'Make You Feel My Love', which also featured on her debut album '19', while Ke$ha will offer a new rendition of 'Don't Think Twice, It's Alright'. It has not been announced which Dylan track Miley Cyrus will cover.

RAMMSTEIN To Release 'Mein Land' Single 

German metallers RAMMSTEIN are set to release a new single, "Mein Land", on November 14 (three days earlier in Germany, Austria and Switzerland). It will be made available as a four-track CD digipak, as well as a seven-inch vinyl with two tracks. In addition to "Mein Land", it includes the previously unreleased song "Vergiss Uns Nicht", as well as remixes of the title cut by BossHoss and Mogwai.

"Mein Land" comes off RAMMSTEIN's retrospective of the band's most significant songs, to be released in November in conjunction with the band's new European headlining tour. Entitled "Made In Germany 1995 - 2011", the set will include 20 of RAMMSTEIN's best tracks, one new song, as well as the entire video catalogue for the first time on CD/DVD.

Hanlon gets urge to press vinyl

Keith Hanlon has played in various Columbus bands past and present-Orchestraville, the Twits, the Black Swans. He records albums, too, such as Black Swans releases and the recent full-length debut from the Regionals.

But it wasn't until earlier this year, when the Black Swans pressed a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl single to sell on the road, that Hanlon got the itch to start his own label.

"I've been a record collector all my life, but being there to cut the vinyl and everything, I thought, ‘I just want to do more of this,'" he said......

Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin and 40 Years of ‘Stairway to Heaven’

How did high school dances end before November 8, 1971? That’s the date that Led Zeppelin released a promotional disc to FM rock stations that would become the world’s most-played radio hit and cross over to teen-packed auditoriums everywhere.

“Stairway to Heaven” was an unlikely on-air success at eight-minutes long, but in the early ’70s, FM DJs still could play the full-length version of “In-A- Gadda-Da-Vida,” Iron Butterfly’s 17-minute bathroom break anthem. And “Stairway”’s length, plus the song’s long, quiet build-up, made it perfect for slow dancing until the explosive finale, which provided an outlet for the hormonal energy that the slow dancing generate.

The song that Gibson Les Paul legend Jimmy Page described as “crystallizing the band” started taking form in 1970 during Page and Robert Plant’s famous songwriting vacation in rural Wales at a cottage called Bron-Yr-Aur.

Vinyl is Back But Cassette Tapes?

The sonic quality was dubious (much like the standard MP3) and they had a propensity to get wound around their own mechanism while being played, yet the cassette tape had many royal followers. Now it appears they are coming back, at least on a limited basis.

The popularity of indie music may be the driving force behind a renewed interest in the often-denigrated cassette recording tape.

In 1956, Clarence Henry's "Ain't Got No Home" was released by Argo Records. Because he sings like a frog on the record, further releases would be credited to Clarence "Frogman" Henry.

Also in 1956, Elvis Presley attained his third straight number one hit on The Cashbox Best Sellers Chart when "Love Me Tender" reaches the top. The King had led the list since the middle of August with "Hound Dog", which was replaced by "Don't Be Cruel" a month later.

In 1957, after a show at the Pan Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles, local police told Elvis Presley that he was not allowed to wiggle his hips onstage and the local press ran headlines saying Elvis would have to clean up his act. The next night, the Los Angeles Vice Squad filmed his entire concert, to study his performance.

In 1957, the Crickets started a three-week run at #1 on the UK singles chart with “That’ll be the Day.” It was a #3 hit in the US where it went on to sell more than a million.

In 1960, Ben E. King was at Atlantic Records, laying down his first solo efforts since leaving The Drifters. During the session, King recorded "Spanish Harlem" which would reach #10 in the US and "Stand By Me" which would go to #4 stateside and #1 in the UK.

"Come See About Me" was released by the Supremes in 1964.

In 1964, 31 year-old Salvatore Philip Bono marries 18 year old Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere. For a time they performed together as Caesar and Cleo before changing the name of their act to Sonny and Cher. Their union lasted 12 years.

In 1970, Black Sabbath played their first-ever live show in the US when they kicked off a 16-date tour at Glassboro State College.

In 1973, Gladys Knight and the Pips started a two-week run at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with “Midnight Train to Georgia.” It was the group’s 18th Top 40 hit and first #1. The record won the 1974 Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus and has become Knight's signature song.

In 1975, the relatively unknown Bruce Springsteen had the rare honor of simultaneous covers on both Time and Newsweek magazines in the US.

In 1979, Mark David Chapman buys a five-shot .38 special for $169. A little over six weeks later, he would use it to kill John Lennon.

In 1980, former T. Rex member Steve Took choked to death on a cherry stone, after some magic mushrooms he had eaten numbed all sensation in his throat.

Prince's album "1999" was released in 1982.

In 1984, at a Grateful Dead concert in Berkeley, California, the band allocated a specific area for fans to make bootleg recordings of the show.

The U2 film 'Rattle and Hum' premiered in Dublin, Ireland in 1988.

Xavier Cugat died of heart failure at the age of 90 in 1990.

In 1995, Gloria Estefan becomes the only pop artist to receive a call from the Pope to perform.

In 2008, Forbes.com reported that Elvis Presley was the top earning dead celebrity over the past twelve months, earning over $52 million. Income was boosted by visitors to his Graceland estate who commemorated the 30th anniversary of his death and new ventures like the Elvis Sirius Satellite Radio show.

In 2010, twenty-five global premieres of Michael Jackson's "THIS IS IT" took place around the world. Fifteen were simultaneous.

DEAR JERRY: I am a long time music lover who still learns a lot from your answers to questions asked by other readers.

For example, I know Columbia introduced the long-play format in 1948 with a 10-inch Frank Sinatra LP. But it doesn't make sense that they would release just one selection. Are there others that we just don't hear about?

DEAR JOEL: Yes, there are exactly 100 others you don't hear about — until now.

At a two-day Columbia Records convention (June 21-22, 1948), they proudly announced, and previewed for the media and distributors, a debut catalog of 101 microgroove LPs. Two months later they went on sale nationwide.

For this initial offering, Columbia stuck with their most popular styles and genres.

The biggest chunk of this first batch of vinylite (soon shortened to “vinyl”) is the 70 classical music albums in their Masterworks line (CL-2000 and ML-4000 series).

The masters featured, and number of LPs if more than one, are: Bach; Beethoven (12); Bizet; Brahms (4); Bruch; Chopin; De Falla; Debussy (5); Dvorak (2); Foster; Franck; Gershwin (2); Gilbert & Sullivan; Grieg; Haydn; Khachaturian (2); Mahler; Mendelssohn (2); Moussorgsky-Ravel; Mozart (4); Prokofiev (2); Ravel (2); Schubert; Schumann (2); Shostakovich; Sibelius; J. Strauss; R. Strauss (2); Stravinsky (2); Tchaikowsky (6); Wagner (2); and Wieniawski (3).

Another 20 LPs are in the “Light Classical and Show Tunes” category:

That leaves just 11 LPs to be spread out among Columbia's many pop stars.

Besides Sinatra (CL-6001), they include: Frankie Carle (CL-6002); Dorothy Shay (CL-6003); Dinah Shore (CL-6004); Xavier Cugat (CL-6005); Marek Weber (CL-6006); Buddy Clark (CL-6007); Les Brown (CL-6008); Harry James (CL-6009); Eddy Duchin (CL-6010); and Ray Noble (CL-6011).

The main reason you hear more about “The Voice of Frank Sinatra” is because his is where the pop numbering began, giving the impression it came ahead of the others. What is not widely known is that all 101 of these albums — specifically 30 ten-inch and 71 twelve-inch discs — came out at exactly the same time.

By the end of August, some 500 Columbia record retailers had their starting inventory. Here are the suggested retail prices, which might have seemed a bit costly in 1948: $4.85 for 12-inch Masterworks (4000 series); $3.85 for 10-inch Masterworks (2000 series); and $2.85 for pop titles (6000 series), all of which are 10-inch.

Along with the records, stores also received Philco 33-speed album players (retailing for $31.50), needed to demonstrate the new microgroove format.

Each month following, Columbia, and other labels, added dozens of new titles to their LP catalog.

Though Columbia didn't unveil microgroove LPs until mid-1948, their research into that area actually began in 1939, around the time the Second World War began. They did not resume the project until the war ended in 1945.


DEAR JERRY: I have a 78 of “The Chipmunk Song,” and want to know if it is the last No. 1 hit released here on 78, as well as 45?

I know some other countries made 78s for years after the U.S. dropped that format.

DEAR SAM: “The Chipmunk Song,” released in November 1958, is among the last U.S. 78 singles; however, Wilbert Harrison's “Kansas City” came along four months later, on 45 and 78 rpm. It reached No. 1 in mid-May 1959, and is the answer to your question.

Between “The Chipmunk Song” and “Kansas City,” two other No. 1 hits were available on 78: “Stagger Lee” (Lloyd Price) and “The Happy Organ” (Dave 'Baby' Cortez).




IZ ZAT SO? Inspired by both of this week's topics, let's answer a question that, though not yet submitted by anyone, is probably on someone's “to ask” list:

In May of 1950, about two years and 100 albums after Columbia introduced the long play, one of their own became the first LP to reach No. 1 on the album charts. This honor belongs to the soundtrack of “Young Man with a Horn” (Columbia CL-6106), featuring Doris Day with Harry James and His Orchestra.

Then in March 1951, the original cast recording of “Guys and Dolls” (Decca DL-8036) became the first 12-inch LP to hit No. 1.

The struggles of the music business over the last 10 years have been well-documented. With the launch of Napster and the blossoming of illegal downloads, sales of physical CDs plummeted, and labels and shops disappeared. Digital sales via outlets like iTunes and Amazon have helped the industry stem the tide a little, but not enough.

Yet over the last few years, something strange has happened: vinyl sales have shown tremendous growth. Once deemed too big and too old in the CD era, the format has somehow made a comeback in the age of digital downloads. We recently caught up with Billy Fields, Director of Sales and overseer of vinyl production and Record Store Day for a major record company, to discuss the return of vinyl, what makes the format unique, and how digital music and vinyl can both continue to grow in the years ahead.

Flightpath: Music is so tied into digital technology these days, but vinyl sales – this year and last year – are really kind of astounding. 2.8 million sold in 2010, and that was up from 900,000 four years ago. Sales from 2011 so far are up 37 percent over the same period last year. Why do you think this is happening?

Billy Fields: I should couch all this. Some of this is actually based in fact because of the business I’m in and who I talk to on a regular basis, but a lot of this is just my thought about the aspect of digital music – that convenience is really fantastic, but convenience doesn’t actually trump the emotional connection that someone has to a record. I just read a story that came in through a vinyl community blog and through a Twitter feed that I follow about this cat that was in San Antonio when the wildfires struck. The guy snuck back into his “by-demand-of-the-police-get-out-of-the-neighborhood” neighborhood to get his records.

Martin Sexton, whose rendition of "Working Class Hero," was called "chill-inspiring" by Billboard Magazine, said, "John has always been a hero of mine, not only for his musical brilliance, but for his life-long commitment to bringing peace and light into the world." Theatre Within, a not-for-profit performing arts presenter dedicated to producing shows to benefit important charities and social causes, has produced The Annual John Lennon Tribute since 1981, shortly after Lennon's death. Glow In The Dark Vinyl?

Leave it to Jack White. In bringing back an old gimmick, he sets the bar high by bringing back 'glow in the dark' vinyl; which, by the way creates a beautiful collectible (but he knows that!). Kraftwerk released a 12" single of "Neon Lights", made of glow-in-the-dark plastic in 1978 and I would bet that there are a number of children's records that glow in the dark as well.

Vinyl revival: Used media makes comeback at new Fort Collins record store

Late-show hosts used to hold up a compact disc when bands appeared on their show; now, they are starting to hold up records, said Scott Makerchuk manager of the new Old Town record store The Bizarre Bazaar.

While the distinction might appear minor to some, Makerchuk, 45, of Fort Collins points to it as a sign of the times that vinyl is coming back.

The Bizarre Bazaar opened Tuesday in Old Town Fort Collins to buy and sell used records, books and movies.

The store at 254 Linden St. offers what Makerchuk calls pre-download-era used media. That includes everything from books and VHS to classic records.

Flipping through the racks representing a fraction of more than 10,000 records in The Bizarre Bazaar's inventory reveals such classics as Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and the Beach Boys

When asked how he enjoyed meeting Queen Elizabeth II, John said "She's much nicer than she is in the photos."

In 1970, a wake was held at the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo, California to celebrate the life of Janis Joplin. The singer, who died of an accidental drugs overdose, had left $2,500 in her will to throw a wake party in the event of her demise. Joplin was cremated in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary in Los Angeles; her ashes were scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean and along Stinson Beach.

In 1974, Barry White scored his only US #1 album with 'Can’t Get Enough.'

In 1980, Paul Kantner of Jefferson Starship suffers a brain hemorrhage during a recording session. After 15 days in the hospital he recovers fully.

In 1981, Queen and David Bowie recorded their collaborative effort "Under Pressure" in Montreaux, Switzerland. The song was featured on Queen's 1982 album Hot Space. The song reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart. It was also number 31 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s. The song was reportedly played live at every Queen concert between 1982-1986.

In the early '80s, it was popular for 2 superstars to get together and release a hit single. Other notable combinations include Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder on "Ebony And Ivory," Diana Ross and Lionel Richie on "Endless Love," and Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton on "Islands in the Stream." This was the first time Queen collaborated with another artist.

According to Queen bass player John Deacon, Freddie Mercury did most of the songwriting on this, although everyone contributed. The lyrics deal with how pressure can destroy lives, but love can be the answer. The lyrics are characteristic of Mercury's songwriting.



In 1984, 19 year-old John D. McCollum shot himself with a .22 caliber handgun after spending the day listening to Ozzy Osbourne records. A year later, McCollum's parents sued Ozzy and CBS Records, alleging that the song "Suicide Solution" contributed to their son's death. The suit was eventually dismissed.

In 1991, legendary Rock concert promoter Bill Graham was killed when the Bell 206B JetRanger III helicopter he was riding in struck the top of a Pacific Gas and Electric transmission tower near Sears Point, northwest of Vallejo and exploded. The fiery crash, which left the helicopter's wreckage dangling near the top of the towering structure, killed Graham (age 60), his girlfriend Melissa Gold (age 47) and pilot Steve Kahn. Graham had founded the Fillmore theaters in San Francisco and New York and had played key roles in supporting such bands as the Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, The Band, Bob Dylan, The J. Geils Band, The Allman Brothers Band and The Rolling Stones.

In 1992, Pearl Jam set a new record for first week sales when their LP "Vs." sold over 950,000 copies.

In 1993, catholic churches in San Juan, Puerto Rico urge residents to tie black ribbons on trees to protest Madonna's first concert there.

In 1994, Wilbert Harrison, most often remembered for his 1959 chart-topper "Kansas City", suffered a stroke and died at the age of 65. In 2001, his recording of that song was given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, and has also been named as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

In 1998, a US federal judge refused to issue an injunction against the sale of MP3. The device is used to play music downloaded from the Internet. The Recording Industry Association of America had brought the case to court. and, sadly, music has never been the same since....

In 1999, singer / songwriter Hoyt Axton died peacefully at his ranch at the age of 61. He is most often remembered for writing Three Dog Night's "Joy To The World" and "Never Been To Spain" as well as Ringo Starr's "The No No Song" and The Kingston Trio's "Greenback Dollar". His mother, Mae Buran Axton, wrote Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel".

In 2000, Capitol Records through a huge party for Garth Brooks to honor his being the first artist to sell 100 million albums in a decade and have four 10 million sellers

In 2004, Bill Read, the bass singer for the Diamonds passed away at the age of 68. After signing with Mercury Records in 1955, The Diamonds became the first Canadian group to make an impact on the US record charts, placing nine songs in the top twenty during the late 1950s. Their most memorable hits, "Little Darlin" and "The Stroll" reached the Top Ten.

In 2004, the Recording Industry Association of America brought a fresh round of copyright-infringement lawsuits against 750 file sharers, including 25 users on 13 university campuses.

Also in 2004, Apple launched the U2 Special Edition iPod as part of a partnership between Apple, U2 and Universal Music Group. The new U2 iPod held up to 5,000 songs and featured a red Click Wheel and custom engraving of U2 band member signatures. The iPod was being introduced as the band released their new album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

In 2010, Forbes Magazine released its annual list of the Top Earning Dead Celebrities. Michael Jackson led the way at $275 million, Elvis Presley was second at $60 million and John Lennon was fifth at $17 million.

Rock Star Bret Michaels to Donate Music Room at St. Joseph's Barrow Neurological Institute

PHOENIX, Oct. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Rock star and former patient at St. Joseph's Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix will announce plans Thursday for the donation of the Bret Michael's Hospitality and Music Room inside the hospital.

"I want to give something back to the hospital that helped save my life," said Michaels. "Phoenix is my home and I'm proud to be a part of this community."

In April 2010, Michaels was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center suffering from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a life-threatening type of stroke that causes bleeding in the fluid-filled spaces around the base of the brain. St. Joseph's is the home of Barrow Neurological Institute and Michaels was treated by Barrow neurosurgeons.

After being released from Barrow, Michaels made a rapid recovery and went on to win Celebrity Apprentice in 2010 and enjoy a successful national concert tour. The legendary rocker is currently on tour and will perform in Phoenix on Friday at the State Fair.

Michaels' new music room, located near patients' rooms, will be designed to include music listening stations and relaxation areas for patients' families. "It will be warm and hip," says Michaels.

"This room will be a very welcome addition for the families of our patients," said St. Joseph's President and CEO Linda Hunt. "Bret has demonstrated that he is a good friend to this hospital in several ways and we thank him."

Last spring, Michaels performed at the star-studded Celebrity Fight Night in Phoenix and made a special auction donation for dinner at his home. The proceeds of that event largely go to support the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center which is also located at St. Joseph's Barrow Neurological Institute.

In 1960, former schoolmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards meet on a train ride.

In 1963, Peter, Paul and Mary had the two best selling albums in the US with "In the Wind" and "Peter, Paul and Mary". Since then, they have put nine more L.P.s on Billboard's Top 25 album list, although their only number one single was the John Denver written "Leaving On A Jet Plane" in 1969.

In 1963, the Beatles kicked off their first tour of Sweden. The local pop reviewer was not impressed, saying The Beatles should be grateful to their screaming fans for drowning out the group’s terrible performance.

In 1964, the Rolling Stones appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in New York. A riot broke out in the studio and Sullivan was quoted as saying, “I promise you they’ll never be back on our show again.”

Also in 1964, The British music industry honors The Beatles with five Ivor Novello Awards, including one for Most Outstanding Contribution To Music.

In 1968, The double album Electric Ladyland by the Jimi Hendrix Experience was released. It was also made available as two albums with changed artwork after complaints about the naked women who were pictured on the sleeve. The female models were each paid £5 for the photo shoot and another £5 if they posed completely naked.

Also in 1968, Led Zeppelin played for the first time since changing their name from the New Yardbirds at Surrey University in England.

In 1970, Led Zeppelin's third album, "Led Zeppelin III" reached the top of the US album chart. Their first L.P. had hit number 10 and their second had gone to number 7.

In 1974, English Folk singer Nick Drake died from an overdose of a prescribed antidepressant at the age of 26. Between 1969 and 1972 he had recorded three modestly selling albums which would find a new audience by the early 1980s and would be frequently cited by other artists as being a major influence.

In 1982, an audiophile version of "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is released by Mobile Fidelity. 5000 albums are recorded in what is known as UHQR half speed. With a price tag of $50 apiece, they would sell out in two weeks.

In 1986, for the first time in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, the top three spots were held by female solo acts. Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" held down the #1 position, followed by Tina Turner's "Typical Male" at #2 and Janet Jackson's "When I Think Of You" at #3.

In 1991, Margo Sylvia of The Tune Weavers died following a heart attack at the age of 55. The group topped the Billboard chart in 1957 with "Happy, Happy Birthday Baby".

In 1992, Roger Miller died of died of lung and throat cancer in a hospital in Los Angeles. He scored the 1965 U.K. #1 and U.S. #4 single “King of the Road.” Miller won 11 Grammy Awards as a songwriter.

In 2002, Richard Harris, whose version of "MacArthur Park" rose to number two in the United States in 1968, died of cancer. The 72-year-old Irish-born actor had been undergoing chemotherapy at a private clinic in London. Though he charted three other times, Harris was better known for his acting roles on stage and film, most recently playing Albus Dumbledore in two Harry Potter films.

In 2003, the 17th edition of the Bridge School Benefit concert was held in Mountain View, CA with performances including Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Dave Matthews Band, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Willie Nelson, Pearl Jam, Incubus, Dashboard Confessional and Wilco

In 2004, John Peel died in Cuzco, Peru, of a heart attack, at age 65. He was BBC’s longest-serving radio DJ and the first DJ to introduce The Ramones, Roxy Music, The Smiths, The Fall, Rod Stewart, Blur, the Sex Pistols, T. Rex and others to the masses. He founded Dandelion Records in 1969, which released records by Kevin Coyne, Bridget St. John and Medicine Head. He was also known for his “Peel Sessions,” releases of live radio sessions. Peel was appointed an OBE in 1998.

To land on the list, a star needed to make at least $7 million in the past twelve months.
