Music can express great emotions that will often move its creative listeners to try and capture and convey and those feelings in their own art. Regardless of your favorite genre, music is sometimes key to the creative process.

The second greatest part of music for most designers is the album cover and/or packaging. This is the bit that essentially tries to sum up the feel and the message behind all the music on an album; and it also becomes the iconic look for a classic album (think Pink Floyd and Aerosmith, just to name a few). These types of artistically and creatively fueled album covers provide lots of inspiration for various artists.

In 1955, Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons" begins a ten week stay on the Billboard chart, where it will eventually reach #1. The record will become one of the biggest selling singles of the 1950s.

In 1956, police used tear gas to break up a riot that broke out during a Fats Domino concert in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Fats and three of his sidemen suffered minor injuries.

The Elvis Presley film "Girls! Girls! Girls!" premiered in 1962.

Mississippi John Hurt died in 1966 at the age of 73.

In 1967, the Beatles completed recording their next single “Hello Goodbye” at Abbey Road studios in London with a second Paul McCartney bass line. The McCartney song had been selected for the A-side for the Beatles next single, the flip side to be Lennon’s “I Am the Walrus.”

In 1985, the TV soundtrack from Miami Vice went to #1 on the U.S. album chart. It spent a total of 11 weeks at #1.

In 1995, the US TV music show Soul Train celebrates 25 years on the air with appearances by Al Green, Bill Withers, Diana Ross and Patti LaBelle.

In 1996, Counting Crows went to #1 on the US album chart with Recovering the Satellites.

In 2007, Led Zeppelin’s eagerly awaited reunion concert in London was postponed for two weeks after guitarist Jimmy Page broke a finger. The tribute concert in honor of late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun was rescheduled for December 10. More than a million fans applied for the 20,000 tickets available, which cost £125 each. Profits from the show would go toward scholarships in Ertegun’s name in the U.K., U.S. and the country of his birth, Turkey.

In 2010, Jim Clench, bassist for April Wine on their Billboard #32 hit "You Could Have Been A Lady" in 1972, died of lung cancer at the age of 61.

DEAR JERRY: I read your informative explanation of the subtle differences between answer songs, sequels, responses, and parodies.

I'm not sure how it fits in, but in the 1970s there was a somewhat memorable hit in California that is hard to categorize.

Unfortunately, the details are even harder to remember.

What I do recall is it has a summer theme, and the title of the song is identical to a song being sung about in the lyrics. Though they are not the same song, one song is about the other. I never heard anything like it before or after.

Can you identify it? What would you call this type song?

DEAR DAVID: I would call it brilliant!

First, and this is the easy part, are the details. It is “Summertime Lovin',” written and performed by Layng Martine Jr. (Playboy 6081), issued in the bicentennial summer of 1976.

Now let's work through the confusing part.

In “Summertime Lovin',” Martine recalls one July, many summers ago, when he first crossed paths with a carhop at a drive-in restaurant.

He heard her singing what was the No. 1 song back then, titled “Summertime Lovin'.” This of course became “their song,” and, still thinking back, he adds: “the lyrics to that song kinda swept us along.”

Thus we have a song titled “Summertime Lovin',” dedicated to an older and completely different song of the same title.

I can think of no other song that uses this imaginative concept.

As for Layng Martine Jr. the composer, BMI lists over 300 diverse songs by him. From those I have selected 10 familiar favorites:

DEAR JERRY: In the home where I grew up in the '60s, we frequently played Marty Robbins' albums of western music.

Among his many cowboy tunes is one that I still have a question about.

In “Little Joe the Wrangler,” we hear that Joe's spur had “rung its nell.” Is the nell a part of a spur, the saddle, or something else?

DEAR SHIRLEY: Taken out of context, homophones can cause confusion. In this usage, involving nell and knell (silent 'k'), the meaning is quite clear.

From the story, we know that the next morning, after a storm caused the cattle to stampede, the body of Little Joe the Wrangler was found “beneath his horse, his life was gone, his spur had rung its knell.”

Metaphorically, the mournful ringing of the knell signified Little Joe's death.


IZ ZAT SO? Here is a fascinating addendum to the knell/nell sidebar: “Little Joe the Wrangler” is a 100-year-old western classic, having been recorded by numerous singers. Not nearly as well known is a sequel that picks up the story shortly after Little Joe's untimely demise. Its title, coincidentally I believe, is “Little Joe the Wrangler's Sister, Nell.”

New Amy Winehouse Album Cover Revealed

The artwork for the new album featuring previously unheard songs by Amy Winehouse has been revealed. The album, 'Amy Winehouse Lioness: Hidden Treasures,' is due to hit the streets on December 5th. The LP features twelve songs, including new original tracks and covers compiled by her producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi.  Amy's father Mitch Winehouse said the album showed that the 'Tears Dry On Their Own' star was "a true genius".

"Had the family felt this album wasn't up to the standard of Amy's others, 'Frank' and 'Back To Black', we'd never have agreed to release it," he said.

Hot on the heels of Soundgarden's highly successful 2011 summer tour, for Black To Black Friday UMe will release the individually numbered, limited-edition 10"-vinyl EP from Soundgarden - Before The Doors: Live On I-5 Soundchecks as the companion piece to the band's first-ever live album, Live On I-5, released earlier this year. Recorded during their 1996 tour, Before The Doors: Live On I-5 Soundchecks features "No Attention," "Never The Machine Forever" and a freaked-out version of the Doors' "Waiting For The Sun," taken from their soundcheck at Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, CA, on December 5, 1996; "Room A Thousand Years Wide" taken from PNE Forum in Vancouver, Canada, on December 7, 1996; and "Somewhere" taken from their soundcheck at Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, CA, on December 4, 1996.

Nirvana – Nevermind: The Singles:

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Nirvana's generation-defining album Nevermind, which has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. And now, for the first time, all four of the original singles from this iconic album are being reissued in a limited-edition 10"-vinyl box set. Each box set will be individually numbered and this marks the first time Nirvana's music has ever been pressed on 10" vinyl. Featured are the band's monumental singles "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (edit) with its B-sides "Drain You" (LP version), "Even In His Youth" and "Aneurysm"; "Come As You Are" (LP version) with the B-sides "Endless, Nameless" "School" (live) and "Drain You" (live); "Lithium" (LP version) featuring the B-sides "Been A Son" (live), "Curmudgeon" and "D-7" (taken from a John Peel session); and "In Bloom" (LP version) featuring live versions of "Sliver" and "Polly." Each single comes in a slipcase picture sleeve and includes the original artwork. Earlier this year UMe released a two-disc Deluxe and a Super Deluxe five-disc box set to commemorate one of the most influential albums of an era. Nevermind shot up to No. 2 on the Billboard Catalog chart along with the recently released concert film Live At The Paramount DVD & Blu-ray debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard DVD chart.

Pete Townshend - The Quadrophenia Demos 1:

Quadrophenia is one of the most widely recognized albums of The Who's career because of its classic depiction of mod culture, its renowned imagery, and the magnificent music and powerful performances. For Black Friday, UMe will release the first of two limited-edition, individually numbered, 10"-vinyl EPs, featuring six demos from the forthcoming "Director's Cut" box set of Quadrophenia, out November 15. Included are demo versions of "The Real Me" recorded in October 1972; "Cut My Hair" written in June 1972; "Punk" recorded in November 1972; "Dirty Jobs" recorded in July 1972; "Is It In My Head" recorded in April 1972; and the never-before-released track "Anymore," recorded in November 1971. The Quadrophenia Demos 1 is the first of two exclusive releases with the second, a five-track companion 10" EP, scheduled for release on Record Store Day in April 2012. It will be the first time any of these tracks appear on vinyl and will not be made available anywhere else. The combined two releases encompass 11 of the demos from the forthcoming box set and provide a unique insight into the creation of this landmark album.

In 1894, Billboard Advertising was published for the first time, later to become Billboard.

In 1955, an R&B group called the Famous Flames, lead by singer James Brown, cut their first demo of "Please, Please, Please" at a radio station in Macon Georgia. It will lead to their signing with King Records.

In 1956, Elvis Presley bought a new Harley-Davidson motorbike. Presley spent the day riding round Memphis on his new bike with actress Natalie Wood.

In 1958, Russian leaders dub Elvis Presley as "public enemy number one."

In 1959, after cracking the US Top 40 twice while with Atlantic Records, Ray Charles signs with ABC-Paramount, where he will have 24 more Billboard hits.

Also in 1959, for the first time since 1954, Elvis Presley doesn't have a record on any of the Billboard charts. He is currently in Germany serving with the US Army.

In 1962, while The Beatles were appearing at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, a recording was made on a small, portable tape recorder which would be pressed and issued by Singasong Records in 1977 as "Live! At the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, 1962".

In 1964, the Dave Clark Five appear on The Ed Sullivan Show singing their hit "Glad All Over". Sullivan likes them much better than The Rolling Stones, saying that unlike the latter, the DC5 are "nice, neat boys."



In 1966, three Elvis Presley albums are certified Gold: his 1956 debut album, "Elvis Presley", "Elvis' Golden Records, Vol. 2" and "Elvis' Golden Records, Vol. 3".

1966, the Doors played the first night of a monthlong residency at the Ondine Discotheque, Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

Also in 1966, with "Good Vibrations" at the top of the UK chart, The Beach Boys kick off the first of seven sold out shows at Finsbury Park Astoria in London, England. Over 600 city buses were adorned with posters announcing their arrival.

In 1968, George Harrison released his first solo album, "Wonderwall Music" on the Apple label. The songs are mostly Harrison instrumentals, aided by Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr and an unaccredited banjo contribution by Peter Tork of The Monkees. The LP would reach #49 in the US but did not chart at all in the UK and would become the first album to be deleted from the Apple Records catalog.

In 1969, "Suspicious Minds" reaches the top of the Billboard chart, becoming Elvis Presley's 17th and final US number one hit during his lifetime. Elvis had recorded it in a 4 AM to 7 AM session last January, with the eighth take being the keeper. The song climbed to #2 in the UK.

In 1969, the Beatles scored their 13th US #1 album with Abbey Road.

In 1970, the Festfolk Quartet perform their first live show in Gothenburg, Sweden. They would later change their name to ABBA.

In 1971, Sly and the Family Stone continue to cancel many concerts at the last minute because Sly doesn't show up. Of 80 concerts booked in 1970, he cancelled 26 and ducked out of 12 of 40 shows in '71. The band is still successful on the radio however, enjoying the hits "Family Affair" and "There's a Riot Goin' On".

In 1972, the 33rd and final film of Elvis' career, Elvis On Tour opens in the US. It would be awarded the 1972 Golden Globe Award for Best Documentary, making it the only Elvis film to win an award of any kind.

In 1975, Elton John, who teamed up with Neil Sedaka on last week's Billboard chart topper, "Bad Blood", took over the top spot himself with "Island Girl".

In 1979, Bob Dylan opened his Slow Train Coming tour in San Francisco, CA. He is booed when the set is all religious material.

In 1987, Dire Straits' CD "Brothers In Arms" passes the three million sales mark, becoming the UK's all-time best selling album.

In 1990, Nearly twenty years after their first US chart appearances, two former teen heart-throbs returned to Billboard's Hot 200 album list. The Partridge Family's David Cassidy reached number 27 with his self titled L.P., while Donny Osmond was enjoying the success of "My Love Is A Fire", which would climb to number 21.

Nirvana: Unplugged In New York was released on November 1, 1994. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, selling 310,500 copies in its first week, giving the band its strongest first week sales. By early 1995, MTV Unplugged in New York had surpassed Nirvana's final studio album In Utero (1993) in sales with 6.8 million copies sold.

It features an acoustic performance taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City on November 18, 1993 for the television series MTV Unplugged. The show was directed by Beth McCarthy and first aired on the cable television network MTV on December 14, 1993. As opposed to traditional practice on the television series, Nirvana played a setlist composed of mainly lesser-known material and cover versions of songs by The Vaselines, David Bowie, Meat Puppets (during which they were joined by two members of the group onstage) and Lead Belly.

MTV Unplugged in New York was the first Nirvana album released in the wake of the April 1994 suicide of singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and has become the group's most successful posthumous release, selling five million copies in America by 1997. It also won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996. MTV Unplugged was hailed by critics as proof the band was able to transcend the grunge sound they were commonly associated with.

The MTV Unplugged In New York performance was released on DVD on November 20, 2007. The DVD release featured the entire taping, including the two songs ("Something in the Way" and "Oh Me") excluded from the broadcast version. Bonus features consisted of the original broadcast version of the performance, a 1999 MTV special titled Bare Witness: Nirvana Unplugged featuring the recollections of MTV producers and audience members, and five songs taped during the pre-show rehearsal: "Come as You Are", "Polly", "Plateau", "Pennyroyal Tea", and "The Man Who Sold the World".



In 1996, U2 allowed fans to watch them record a new album via an internet link to their studio in Dublin, Ireland.

In 2004, 61 year old Terry Knight, the former manager of Grand Funk Railroad, was murdered at his home in Killeen, Texas. Knight was defending his daughter during a domestic disturbance when he was stabbed by her boyfriend, 26 year old Donald Alan Fair. Knight began his music career by leading a Michigan band called Terry Knight and the Pack, who scored a Billboard top 50 hit with "I, Who Have Nothing".

In 2008, drummer and singer Jimmy Carl Black passed away after a bout with lung cancer. He was 70. He was a member of The Keys, The Soul Giants, The Mothers of Invention and Jimmy Carl Black and the Mannish Boys. He also worked with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Doors, Joe Cocker, The Grateful Dead and The Turtles

Slim pickings this week, although there is quality music to be found especially the Beach Boys' 'The SMiLE Sessions,' which is available in 2-CD, 2-LP vinyl, and a 9-disc (5-CD, 2-LP, 2-7") box set editions. U2 does even more with options that are available for the remastered edition of the 'Achtung Baby' album, including single CD, "Deluxe" 2-CD, 4-LP vinyl box set, 10-disc (6-CD, 4-DVD) "Super Deluxe" box set, and the "Uber Deluxe" 15-disc (6-CD, 4-DVD,5 -7" vinyl) box set.  And for the really adventurous Queen is releasing Queen 40 Limited Edition Collector's Box Set Volume 3 (10 CDs).

Yes: Live DC/DVD package due next month

Prog-rockers Yes have a new live album on the way.

“In The Present—Live from Lyon” will be available on CD/DVD on November 29th in North America and December 2nd in Europe.

Recorded in Lyon, France, on December 1st 2009, “In The Present – Live from Lyon” is a collection of hidden gems and unforgettable classics, with new singer Benoit David breathing new life into each of the songs.

The package comes with a 55 minute DVD containing excerpts from the live performance, candid interviews and behind the scenes footage. The cover art features an original design by Roger Dean, author of most Yes album covers including classics “Fragile,” “Close To The Edge” and “Drama.”

Yes’ powerful compositions influenced a generation of musicians. They have a hugely successful and indelible catalogue of masterpieces; songs like “Roundabout,” a seminal hit which consistently appears on “the best songs of all-time” lists, and the group’s #1 hit “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” taken from the 1983 album “90125,” saw Yes top the UK and US album charts simultaneously.

Yes’ latest studio album, “Fly From Here” – the first in ten years – hit the Top 10 on the Rock Charts and was declared as their “best work since the ‘70s” (Paste Magazine)

LAMB OF GOD: Reveal Album Title, Artwork and Track List

Virginia metallers LAMB OF GOD have decided to call their new LP 'Resolution' which is due on January 24, 2012 via Epic Records (one day earlier internationally through Roadrunner). The effort was produced by Josh Wilbur, who worked on the band's last effort, 2009's 'Wrath.'

'Resolution' will feature 14 songs and will come in a digipack with artwork by longtime art director Ken Adams.

In 1952, pianist Johnnie Johnson hired 26 year old Chuck Berry as a guitarist in his band. While playing evening gigs in the St. Louis area, Berry will keep his day job as a hairdresser for the next three years.

In 1959, the Quarry Men (with John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison) changed their name to Johnny and the Moondogs.

In 1960, the Elvis Presley LP "G.I. Blues" enters the Billboard Hot 200, where it will rise to number one and stay there for six weeks. It will finally fall of the chart 111 weeks later, making it the longest charting album of Elvis' career.

In 1962, Elvis Presley's 11th film, Girls! Girls! Girls! premiered in Honolulu, Hawaii, where it was shot. The movie is a musical comedy about a penniless fisherman who loves his life on the sea and dreams of owning his own boat.

In 1963, the Beatles returned to London from Sweden and were greeted by hundreds of screaming fans and a mob of photographers and journalists. American television host Ed Sullivan was at Heathrow as The Beatles arrived, and was struck by the sight of Beatlemania in full swing; he decided to look into getting this group to appear on his U.S. television program.

In 1964, the Supremes achieve their second Billboard number one single with "Baby Love". Just four months earlier, other artists at Motown Records referred to them as "the no-hit Supremes."

In 1964, sitting at the top of the Cashbox Magazine Best Sellers Chart was New Zealand-born Canadian vocalist Gale Garnett with "We'll Sing In The Sunshine". It will also reach #4 on the Billboard chart and win a 1965 Grammy Award for Best Folk Recording. Garnett continued to record through the rest of the 1960s, but her follow-up, "Lovin' Place", was her only other single to chart in America.

In 1964, Ray Charles was arrested by Logan Airport customs officials in Boston and charged with possession of heroin. This was his third drug charge, following incidents in 1958 and 1961. Ray avoided prison time after kicking the habit in a clinic in Los Angeles, but spent a year on parole in 1966.

In 1964, for the first time since January, The Beatles do not have a song on the Billboard Hot 100. During that time, they placed fourteen records on the chart with five different labels.

In 1967, Iggy & the Stooges made their live debut at a Halloween party in Michigan.

Other notables included George Harrison in fourth place with $22 million, James Brown was eleventh with $5 million and Bob Marley was twelfth with $4 million.
