Portishead Set To Release Limited Edition Vinyl

Portishead are releasing a single called "Chase the Tear," with all earnings going towards Amnesty’s human rights work and all rights given to the organization. This five-minute track was previously only available as a download, but is set for a full international release on limited edition 12” vinyl on XL Recordings on November 14th. The vinyl comes backed with a new version of the song by Toronto band Doldrums (www.endlessdoldrums.com). The record will also come with a code to download the MP3 version. The vinyl release will be available to buy online from Rough Trade and Piccadilly Records as well as the usual record stores and at Portishead live shows.

Katatonia's 'For Funerals to Come' Vinyl Reissue

Katatonia was formed in 1991 by Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse. Their debut album, ‘Dance of December Souls’, was released in 1993, gaining the band recognition for their eclectic brand of gothic doom/death metal & joining acts such as Paradise Lot & My Dying Bride as one of the genre’s defining bands. On future albums a newer, sleeker Katatonia sound came to the fore, starting with a streamlined & structured collection of melodic dark rock songs that became third album ‘Discouraged Ones’; the main evolution point for modern day Katatonia.

The Day I Discovered Vinyl

After months of nagging my dad, he finally came home a week ago with a large cardboard box on the back of his bike. He had just returned from a repair store in Williamsburg and the box contained our newly fixed turntable.

For years, our record player had sat on top of our stereo, broken and despondent. Ancient as my dad himself, it collected dust and seemed to melt into the furniture. I spent many hours poring over my dad's hundreds of records, longing to play them and yet not having the chance. Although I could've easily downloaded everything in his collection from the internet and listened to it on my ipod, I wanted something more than that. I wanted something beyond the quickness and immediacy that my ipod presented me with. I wanted the experience of vinyl, of letting the needle drop and hearing the faint scratch signal the beginning of another tune.

As soon as I helped my dad set up the record player, I selected a record from one of our many shelves and proceeded to carefully place it on the turntable.

At that time, Jimi Hendrix was just a struggling musician and was updating his father on recent activities via the mail. More than 40 years later, the postcard Jimi Hendrix sent to his dad, can be considered a historical document due to the guitarist pointing out two important developments that are among the most significant events in his solo career. In early 1966, Hendrix was still best known for his work as a sideman for the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. However, in October, 1966, very soon after forming The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jimi Hendrix wrote the postcard to his father and filled him in on recent developments.

Two months later, the band's first single, "Hey Joe," was released. Their debut album, "Are You Experienced," soon followed; it is now considered by many to be one of the greatest albums of all time.

Record Raid Expands to Three Venues and More Vendors

This Saturday, Record Raid, New Orleans’ local record fair, is returning to Siberia and the Hi-Ho Lounge and expanding across the street to the All-Ways Lounge.

“It’s essentially just a big music flea market,” says organizer Hunter King about the Record Raid. “It’s full of music media: vinyl, CDs, 45s, and cassettes. We’ve got a bunch of vendors from New Orleans and all across the gulf coast.”

The fair happens three times a year, summer, spring and fall, and this time around it’s slated to have the most vendors yet (disclaimer: OffBeat online editor Ben Berman is a vendor). “It’s worth mentioning that a lot of my usual big vendors couldn’t make it because of scheduling issues,” says King. “I usually have Domino Sound Record Shack, Euclid Records, and Skully’z Recordz. I’ve had Jim Russell Records a couple times too. This time, Skully’z is the only one who can make it, but it’s still my biggest vendor list so far. There are a whole lot of new vendors who I’m really looking forward to.”

Aside from browsing musical goods, King has highlights planned for patrons at each venue. “Siberia will have DJs—we tried that for the first time in July and it worked out well. Hi-Ho will have several listening stations set up, and All-Ways will have a swap table where people can bring in a box of records to swap and not have to pay a vendor fee. And of course there will be food too, available from the bars themselves.” The DJs will be playing a variety of music, all on vinyl of course, from punk and garage to soul and disco.

This isn’t just your everyday record fair, either. King runs the Record Raid as a non-profit and sometimes as a community fund-raiser. “The idea is to expose people to mountains of music and allow people to communicate with each other and come together through their music. I don’t think that there are too many places or festivals that celebrate recorded music, and so the fair, in that way, reveals to people new knowledge and New Orleans history. It’s a very local thing to me.”

In 1938, Kate Smith first sang Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" on network radio.

In 1954, Bill Haley's rendition of "Shake, Rattle and Roll" peaked at #7 during its US chart run of 27 weeks. He had dropped his cowboy image about a year and a half earlier, while renaming The Saddlemen to Bill Haley and His Comets. Producer Milt Gabler would later say that he "cleaned up" the lyrics from Joe Turner's original 1954 version in order to insure radio air-play.

In 1955, Billboard Magazine published the results of its annual disc jockey poll. The most played R&B single was Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love," the most promising artist is Chuck Berry, the favorite R&B artist was Fats Domino and Elvis Presley was voted the most promising Country And Western artist.

In 1955, Billboard introduced "The Top 100" format, which will combine record sales with radio and jukebox play to arrive at the standings. The Four Aces "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" has the distinction of being the first number one record using the new calculation method.

In 1957, Dance Teacher magazine denounced England's Princess Margaret for endorsing Rock 'n' Roll, and in doing so, hastening the demise of Ballroom dancing. The article went on to say that "Rock 'n' Roll should be discouraged."

In 1958, Hank Ballard And The Midnighters recorded their original version of "The Twist." It was issued as the B side of the Gospel style ballad "Teardrops On Your Letter" and although it reached #16 on the R&B chart, Ballard's version of "The Twist" wouldn't appear on the Billboard Pop chart until just after Chubby Checker's version took off two years later.

In 1961, Joan Baez played her first major concert at a sold out Town Hall in New York.

In 1964, 24-year-old Tom Jones recorded "It's Not Unusual" for Britain's Decca Records. Jones recorded what was intended to be a demo for Shaw, but when she heard it she was so impressed with Jones' delivery that she declined the song and recommended that Jones release it himself. The record was the second Decca single Jones released, reaching number one in the UK charts in 1965. It was also the first hit for Jones in the US, peaking at #10 in May of that year. The single was released in the US on the Parrot label and also reached #3 on Billboard's easy listening chart. Jones used this song as the theme for his late 1960s-early 1970s musical variety series This Is Tom Jones. It has since become Jones' musical signature.

In 1965, the final recording session for the Beatles’ Rubber Soul album took place, at Abbey Road, London. They needed three new songs to finish the album so an old song “Wait” is pulled off the shelf and the group recorded two new songs “You Won't See Me” and “Girl,” the basic tracks for both songs being completed in two takes.

In 1965, Velvet Underground made its performance debut at a high school dance in Summit, NJ.

In 1967, Van Morrison performed his current US #10 hit, "Brown Eyed Girl" on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. Although the song has become a staple on US Oldies radio, it was not a hit in the UK.



In 1969, the FBI in Phoenix, Arizona arrested Jim Morrison for "interfering with the flight of an intercontinental aircraft and public drunkenness"aboard a plane. The Doors singer who was on his way to a Rolling Stones concert with actor Tom Baker had been drinking and annoying the stewardesses. The charges were eventually dropped.

In 1972, a little over a year after the Allman Brothers Band lost Duane Allman in a motorcycle accident, their bassist, 24 year old Berry Oakley was killed when his motorcycle hit a bus, just three blocks away from the site that claimed Allman. At first, Oakley seemed all right, but died twenty minutes after being brought to the hospital.

In 1973, thirty radio stations across the United States broadcast what it billed as a "live" show by Mott the Hoople. It was really nothing more than Hoople's studio tracks with dubbed-in applause.

KISS released the album 'Rock and Roll Over' in 1976.

In 1978, Donna Summer's Disco version of "MacArthur Park" rose to the top of the Billboard chart, besting Richard Harris' 1968 rendition by one spot. It would be the first of four number one singles for Summer. Songwriter Jimmy Webb would later explain that the mysterious lyrics about the cake melting in the rain is simply a metaphor for a love affair ending.

In 1982, Marvin Gaye's first release since leaving Motown Records earlier in the year, "Sexual Healing", becomes his 13th and final #1 on the Billboard R&B chart. The song will reach #3 on the Pop chart and #4 in the UK early next year.

In 1989, Melissa Etheridge and Joe Cocker entertained Germans that were celebrating the newly tumbled Berlin Wall.

In 1997, Metallica played a free concert in Philadelphia, PA.

In 2000, Bobby Sheen, the male vocalist of Bob B. Soxx And The Blue Jeans on their 1963, US #8 hit "Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah", died of pneumonia at the age of 58. That song originally appeared in the 1946 Disney live action and animated movie Song of the South.

In 2002, British Phonographic industry data showed that sales of singles were at their lowest level in 25 years, making up less than 10% of all music sold.

In 2006, Grammy-nominated R&B star Gerald Levert died of a heart attack aged 40. The singer who was the son of O'Jays vocalist Eddie Levert, first found fame with the R&B trio LeVert, and scored a U.K. top 10 single with Casanova in 1987.

Pegi Young & The Survivors to Release New Album, Bracing For Impact, Nov. 15 on Vapor Records

THE GROUP APPEARS ON CONAN NOV. 16, AND TOURS WITH STEPHEN STILLS THIS MONTH

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Singer-songwriter Pegi Young will release her third album, Bracing For Impact (Vapor Records), on November 15. She is once again accompanied by her acclaimed recording and touring band, The Survivors: legendary keyboard player Spooner Oldham, bassist Rick Rosas, guitarist Kelvin Holly, and drummer Phil Jones. Pegi Young & The Survivors will appear on Conan on November 16, and are the opening act on the west coast leg of Stephen Stills' tour this month. The itinerary kicks off November 12 at the Belly Up in Aspen, CO, and wraps November 22 at the Grove in Anaheim, CA.

Bracing For Impact was produced by Pegi Young with The Survivors, with the exception of the final track, "Song For A Baby Girl," produced by Elliot Mazer (who co-produced Young's debut album). The 11-song album is a powerful showcase for Pegi's elegantly spare and emotionally resonant vocals, and a lyrical sensibility marked by heartfelt expression and unflinching honesty. "I'm just trying to tell some stories and make music that I can get behind," she says, and that plainly stated truth threads its way through every song.

Eight of the tracks are Pegi Young originals, with highlights including "Flatline Mama"—featuring a horn section and background vocals from The Watson Twins—"No Heartbeat Sound," and "Trouble In A Bottle." John Lennon Tooth Sells For More Than $30,000 At Auction

The founder of Creation Records, Alan McGee, netted $31,200 on Monday (November 7) from the auction of one of John Lennon’s teeth. Fittingly, it was a dentist who paid dearly for the tooth, which had been expected to sell for around $16,000.

“Once I heard it was up for sale I had to have it,” Canadian dentist Michael Zuk told the BBC. “Some people will think it’s gross; others will be fascinated by it.”

Lennon had the tooth pulled in the late ’60s, and subsequently gave it to his housekeeper, who saved it as a piece of memorabilia for her daughter. Eventually it made its way to McGee, a music executive who’s managed Oasis and The Libertines, among others. Zuk, who has written a book about the teeth of celebrities, says he plans to put the tooth on display in his office.

In 1955, Elvis Presley attended the fourth Country Music Disc Jockey Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Back at his hotel, Mae Boren Axton played him a demo of a new song she had written with Tommy Durden called “Heartbreak Hotel.”

In 1958, a Billboard Magazine article notes that Beechnut gum's sales have gone up 100 percent since becoming an American Bandstand sponsor.

In 1966, the English press broke the news that there would be no more Beatles tours.

In 1967, the Beatles shot three promotional videos for their single Hello Goodbye. They couldn't be played on British TV because of lip-synching restrictions by the musicians union.

In 1967, the Moody Blues released "Nights in White Satin," which was first featured on the album 'Days of Future Passed.'

This was written by Justin Hayward, who joined the band the previous year. He got the idea for the song after someone gave him a set of white satin sheets, and wrote it in his bed-sit at Bayswater. Haywood told the Daily Express Saturday magazine May 3, 2008: "I wrote our most famous song, 'Nights in White Satin' when I was 19. It was a series of random thoughts and was quite autobiographical. It was a very emotional time as I was at the end of one big love affair and the start of another. A lot of that came out in the song."Justin Hayward sold the rights to this song to Lonnie Donegan for a small sum of money, hence Hayward made nothing from it.

The Moody Blues recorded the album with The London Festival Orchestra, which never actually existed - it was the name given to the musicians put together to make this album. The orchestral parts were performed separately and edited between and around the Moody Blues parts, so the orchestra did not actually accompany the group. The original idea was for the group and orchestra to record a Rock version of Dvorak's "New World Symphony," which their record company would use to demonstrate enhanced stereo sound technology.

When first released in 1967, the song reached # 19 on the UK singles chart, a position that might have been higher were it not for its seven-plus minute length. The song was re-released in 1972 after the success of such longer-running dramatic songs as "Hey Jude" and "Layla," and it charted at #2 on Billboard magazine and #1 on Cash Box in the US, earning a gold single for sales of a million copies and was also #1 in Canada. The song also holds the dubious distinction of the highest complete Hot 100 disappearance from the pre-digital download era, vanishing entirely from the chart after falling to #17.

The spoken-word poem, which is heard near the six-minute mark of the album version of the song, is called "Late Lament." It was written by drummer Graeme Edge and was read by keyboardist Mike Pinder. On 'Days of Future Passed,' the poem's last five lines bracket the album, appearing also at the end of track 1 ("The Day Begins").

While "Late Lament" has been commonly known as part of "Nights in White Satin" with no separate credit on the original LP, it was given its own listing on the 2-LP compilation 'This Is The Moody Blues' in 1974 and again in 1987 (without its parent song) on another compilation, Prelude. Both compilations feature the track in a slightly different form than on 'Days of Future Passed.' Both spoken and instrumental tracks are given an echo effect. The orchestral ending is kept intact, but the gong (struck by Mike Pinder) that closes the track from the original LP is completely edited out.

From 1992 through the early 2000s, the Moody Blues toured with shows backed by live orchestras. While backed by the orchestra, "Late Lament" was often included in the performance of "Nights in White Satin." When it was included, Edge recited it himself, since Pinder was no longer with the band at that point.



In 1968, Jefferson Airplane stir up some controversy on The Smothers Brothers Show when Grace Slick, appearing in black face, gives the black power fist salute at the end of "Crown Of Creation".

In 1969, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Gene Autry received a gold record. The song had been released 20 years earlier.

In 1973, former Temptations member Eddie Kendricks scored his only solo, number one Pop hit with "Keep On Truckin". It got as high as #18 in the UK.

David Essex's "Rock On" was released in 1973.

Also in 1973, Elton John started a eight-week run at #1 on the US album chart with 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,' the singer’s third US #1.

The Clash's second album "Give 'Em Enough Rope," was released in England in 1978. The album would be their first US release.

In 1979, the Eagles had the number one song in America with a tune that was co-written by Bob Seger, "Heartache Tonight." It only reached #40 in the UK.

In 1984, Frankie Goes to Hollywood set a UK record for most advanced copies ordered of an album. 1,099,500 copies of 'Welcome to the Pleasure Dome' were ordered.

In 1990, Ronnie Dyson, who had a Top Ten hit in 1970 with "Why Can't I Touch You", died of heart failure and lung disease. Dyson rose to fame after playing a leading role in the Broadway production of Hair in the late 1960s. Although he continued to record for many years, Dyson could never match the success of "Why Can't I Touch You."

In 1994, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page performed Stairway to Heaven on a Japanese TV program, saying it is the last time they will play the song. Thankfully it wasn't.

In 1997, American session guitarist Tommy Tedesco died of lung cancer at age 67. Described by Guitar Player magazine as the most recorded guitarist in history, he recorded with The Beach Boys, Everly Brothers, The Supremes, The Monkees, The Association, Barbra Streisand, Elvis Presley, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Zappa, Sam Cooke, Cher, and Nancy and Frank Sinatra. He also played on many TV themes including Bonanza, The Twilight Zone, M*A*S*H and Batman.

In 2002, viewers of the UK music channel VH1 voted Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" as the most romantic song ever. In 2nd place was Willie Nelson's "You Were Always On My Mind" and 3rd was "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion.

In 2003, a Johnny Cash tribute concert was held in Nashville with Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock, Steve Earle, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson.

"Songs For Japan" Hits $10m Milestone

STAR-STUDDED BENEFIT ALBUM RAISES MILLIONS FOR RED CROSS DISASTER RELIEF

TOKYO, Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Songs For Japan, the unique, star-studded album collection created to help raise money for victims of Japan's 2011 earthquake and tsunami disasters, continues to benefit the survivors through Japanese Red Cross Society.

Yesterday in Tokyo, senior executives from four major music companies – EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music and Warner Music Group – met with Japanese Red Cross Society Vice President, Yoshiharu Otsuka, to recognise the milestone of $10 million raised and donated from the global sales of Songs For Japan. The occasion was a reception hosted by Frances Moore, chief executive of worldwide recording industry organisation IFPI.

A music industry-wide initiative, Songs For Japan is an unprecedented compilation of 38 major hits and classic tracks, including 21 Billboard Hot 100 hits and five #1s from more than 30 of the biggest names in contemporary music. The collection was rush-released worldwide on March 25 – only 14 days after the earthquake struck Japan – as a digital album via iTunes, followed by the release of a physical two-CD set.

Tadateru Konoe, President of Japanese Red Cross Society, said, "The kind thoughts of the people who made and bought this album have given great encouragement to the people affected by the earthquake and tsunami. One hundred percent of the money raised goes directly to those most in need. On behalf of the Japanese Red Cross and the people affected by the disaster, I want to sincerely thank the artists and music companies for this generous support. It is much needed and greatly appreciated."

All the participating artists, songwriters, music labels, music publishers and iTunes waived their royalties and proceeds to maximise the amount of money donated for survivors. In addition, manufacturers, distributors and marketing partners donated materials, services and advertising time or space.

The first payment of $5 million was made to Japanese Red Cross Society earlier this year, after the initial release and sales of Songs For Japan. The latest, further payment of $5 million was made more recently, bringing the total to $10 million.

Worldwide, music fans have to date purchased more than 1 million digital and physical copies of Songs For Japan. The album rocketed to #1 on iTunes in 18 countries immediately after release.

Bob Seger Details New Album Schedule, 2012 Tour Plans and His Songwriting Methods

Bob Seger has announced plans to release a new studio album, and to support that record with a tour. “I will write from January 1 through March 31. I will finish the next record and right now, yes, I will tour with the next record,” Seger tells Ultimate Classic Rock.

Seger, who has sold more than 50 million albums, with 11 platinum and seven multi-platinum titles, also revealed what convinced him to release a studio album for the first time since ‘Face the Promise’ in 1996.

“It just comes and goes. I think I picked [the writing bug] up about a year and a half ago and started writing songs again slowly and surely. Then I said I ‘Yeah, I want to do one more.’ I have written a couple of songs that I really, really, really, really like and that was kind of the driving thing. I want people to hear them!”

Michael Jackson’s PJ's/Bed Sold At Auction

Sadly, on the same day that Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, some of the music legend’s items raised big money at an auction in Ireland. The BBC reported that a set of silk pyjamas and a bed in which the late singer once slept have been sold at an Irish auction for more than $12,000. Apparently, an American entertainment company bought the star's pyjamas for $3,700, while a mahogany bed he slept in was sold to an undisclosed Irish bidder for $8.500. Both the nightwear and the carved bed were used by Jackson when he stayed at Coolatore House near Moate, County Westmeath, five years ago; he and his children were there for several months while he recorded at Grouse Lodge studios in 2006.

One of the iconic voices in folk music, Mary Travers (Peter, Paul & Mary) was born on this date in 1936 (she died in 2009).

In 1955, the Everly Brothers made their first studio recordings, cutting four tracks in 22 minutes at Nashville's Old Tulane Hotel Studios.

In 1958, Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog" became only the third record in history to sell over three million copies, joining "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby and Gene Autry's "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer".

In 1959, Billboard Magazine says that this is "one of the most frantic weeks in the history of the music business," as the government probe into disc jockey payola steps up.

Also in 1959, RCA executives offer a guarantee of $100,000 to Sam Cooke in an effort to lure him to their label when his Keen Records contract expires.

In 1961, Brian Epstein went to Liverpool's Cavern Club to see The Beatles perform for the first time. He had been getting requests at his NEMS music store for a record called "My Bonnie". After several more visits, Epstein would offer to manage the group, which he did until his death in 1967.

In 1962, Motown Records released "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," by the Miracles.

Written by Smokey Robinson and featuring Robinson on lead vocals, with Miracles second tenor Bobby Rogers on harmony co-lead, the song explores the feelings of a man so in love with a woman that he can't leave her despite the fact that she treats him badly. The song was a major hit for the Miracles,reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart, peaking at number eight , and was a number-one smash on the Billboard R&B singles chart during the winter of 1962-63. The Miracles' original version is a 1998 Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. It was also the group's second single to sell over a million copies, after "Shop Around". It has also been selected as one of the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

Interestingly, it almost didn't happen, because "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" wasn't the single's "A" side. The original "A" side of the single (Tamla 54073) was the uptempo song "Happy Landing", a solid rocker of a tune that had hit potential,and even charted regionally. Surprisingly, however, the nation's Dee-Jays flipped the record over, because they liked "Hold On Me" better.



Additionally, "You Really Got a Hold on Me" was the first track recorded for the Beatles' second United Kingdom LP, With the Beatles, and features John Lennon on lead vocal with George Harrison on close harmony. The Beatles acquired an imported copy by the Miracles and included it in their repertoire early in 1963. In the fall of 1963, when EMI acquired their first four track recording equipment, the Beatles recorded another version of the song at Lennon's request, perhaps with the intent of including it as a B-side to an upcoming single, or as part of a four song EP. However, the group concluded that in spite of the enhanced recording technology, the new version was not substantially better than their original studio effort, and the remade cover has yet to be officially released in any form.

The Beatles also recorded "You Really Got a Hold on Me" on four occasions for BBC radio in 1963. One of these, from July 30, 1963 was included on the Live at the BBC collection. A live version recorded in Stockholm, Sweden in October 1963 was released in 1995 on Anthology 1.

The song was performed once again in 1969, during the Let It Be recording sessions, and featured in the 1970 documentary film, Let It Be.

In 1963, the Kingsmen's classic, "Louie, Louie" was released in the US. It will enter the Hot 100 near the end of November and peak at #2 in early January.

The Kingsmen's edition was also the subject of an FBI investigation about the supposed but non-existent obscenity of the lyrics, an investigation that ended without prosecution. In February, 1964, an outraged parent wrote to Robert Kennedy, then the Attorney General of the United States, alleging that the lyrics of "Louie Louie" were obscene. The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the complaint. In June 1965, the FBI laboratory obtained a copy of the Kingsmen recording and, after two years of investigation, concluded that the recording could not be interpreted, that it was "unintelligible at any speed," and therefore the Bureau could not find that the recording was obscene. In September 1965, an FBI agent interviewed one member of the Kingsmen, who denied that there was any obscenity in the song. The song is ranked #55 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

In 1966, John Lennon first met Yoko Ono at a showing of her work at the Indica Art Gallery in London. She supposedly doesn't know who Lennon is. The two wouldn't get together until 1968.

In 1967, David Crosby left the Byrds. The next year Crosby, Stills, and Nash was formed.

Also in 1967, the first issue of Rolling Stone magazine was published in San Francisco. It featured a photo of John Lennon on the cover, dressed in army fatigues while acting in his recent film, How I Won the War. The name of the magazine was compiled from three significant sources: the Muddy Waters song, the Bob Dylan song and The Rolling Stones.

In 1968, a US Army captain is quoted in Rolling Stone Magazine as saying "Rock and Roll music contributes to both the usage of drugs and the high VD rate among enlisted men in the army today."

Also in 1968, Led Zeppelin played their first-ever London show when they appeared at The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm, on the same bill as John Lee Hooker, Deviants, John James and Tyres. Zeppelin singer Robert Plant married his girlfriend Maureen in London on this day and held the reception at the gig.

In 1969, Simon and Garfunkel recorded what would become their signature tune, "Bridge Over Troubled Water", with future member of Bread, Larry Knechtel on piano. Art wanted Paul to sing the song, but Paul insisted that Art's voice was better suited for it. It was a decision that Paul would later say he regretted.

In 1973, Cat Stevens made his national TV debut on ABC's "In Concert."

In 1973, after years of struggling as a member of two New York area bands, The Hassels and Attila, and as a bar room piano player, Billy Joel releases what will ultimately be his breakthrough album, "Piano Man". The title song will be released as a single and become a Top Twenty-five hit early next year.

In 1974, Randy Bachman, the former lead guitarist for The Guess Who, enjoyed a number one song with his new band, Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Randy stuttered through the lyrics of "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" on a demo recording as a private joke about his brother Gary, who had a speech impediment. The record company liked that take better than the non-stuttering version and released it. The song not only gave the band their third US top thirty hit and a #2 in the UK, Gary Bachman stopped stammering.

Jan Hammer went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1985 with the “Miami Vice Theme.”

In 1990, all of Willie Nelson's bank accounts and property was seized by the Internal Revenue Service to use towards and outstanding $16 million tax bill.

In 1993, Dave Matthews Band released their first album, 'Remember Two Things,' on the Bama Rags label.

In 1998, Michael Jackson settled a lawsuit over stories and pictures in the London Daily Mirror that said his face had been disfigured by cosmetic surgery. A lawyer for the publisher said, "The photographs were taken honestly and were not tampered with, but the Mirror has since met with the plaintiff in person and acknowledges that the photographs do not accurately represent the plaintiff's true appearance."

In 1999, the Recording Industry Association of America announces their Artists Of The Century. The Beatles top the list for US sales of over 106 million albums. Garth Brooks was named most successful male artist (89 million albums sold) and Barbra Streisand the most successful female artist. (62 million albums sold). Elvis Presley had the most Gold and Platinum singles with 77, to go along with his 80 Gold and Platinum albums. Elton John's "Candle In The Wind" (Princess Diana version) is the best selling single of all time and the Eagles "Greatest Hits 1971 - 1975" is the record holder for best selling album.

In 1999, American producer, songwriter and co-founder of Atlantic records Herb Abramson died. He wrote and produced Tommy Tucker’s 1964 hit “High Heeled Sneakers.”

It's a Cure sandwich this week with a Cure acetate getting the #1 spot and a French 45 getting the #5. Inbetween are all LPs. "Please Please Me" is hardly a suprise anymore. Four decades ago, during the early days of The Marshall Tucker Band (MTB), the multi-platinum selling southern rock group never had the option of releasing their music on CD or digitally through online retailers. Those were the years when the MTB and every musical act on the planet depended on the trusty vinyl record as the vehicle for delivering music to the consumer. On November 22, 2011, in celebration of 40 years, the MTB comes full circle with the release of the vinyl edition of The Marshall Tucker Band: Greatest Hits (Shout Factory).

“As we continue to tour, more and more fans are showing up in the autograph lines with their original Marshall Tucker vinyl records, even more so than CDs,” says MTB lead singer and founding member, Doug Gray. “There’s just something cool about vinyl. It’s very retro and I think most people out there will agree that in today’s day and age, retro is ‘in.’ This is an appropriate release for us, especially since we’re celebrating 40 years.”

The 17-track album, a Gatefold Double-LP 180 gram vinyl record, contains some of the MTB’s most notable hits including “Can’t You See,” “Heard It In A Love Song,” “Fire On The Mountain,” “24 Hours At A Time” and “Take The Highway.” Three of the 17 tracks are previously unreleased live concert recordings from an earlier overseas tour.

In the fall of 1976, the MTB traveled to the UK and Europe for the band’s maiden voyage of those territories. The tour featured Bonnie Bramlett and Grinderswitch as supporting acts to the MTB. Then band was red hot in America and the time was right to spread the word to other countries. Doug Gray remembers, “We didn’t know what to expect but from the people at the hotel to the crew at Hammersmith Odeon and finally the sold out crowd all made us feel so welcome, we couldn’t believe it. It was the same in Scotland but with a different accent.” When the band decided to release Greatest Hits in vinyl form, there was extra space available to include live tracks, recorded during tour stops in Glasgow, Scotland and London.

Since turntable record players are no longer a mainstream commodity, the new Greatest Hits vinyl record will contain a digital download card, included to ensure consumer listening.

On coming full circle with the band’s first vinyl release since 1988, Doug Gray notes, “Hey, now for the first time in over 20 years we can say we’re releasing a new ‘record’ and really mean it!”

Just a few years ago, vinyl records were the floppy disks of the music world: outdated and sold off the walls of thrift stores for pocket change. Now music fans are turning into audiophiles, obsessing over the quality of sound and snatching up vinyl like candy. What’s behind the rebirth of vinyl, and will it last?

Janis Joplin’s raw, wailing voice screams “Take it / Take another little piece of my heart now, baby” through the speakers while avid music fans flip frantically through endless crates of vinyl records at Shake It Records.

It’s Record Store Day, the fourth annual national event created to “celebrate the art of music,” and people are putting their hands on any vinyl within their grasp, like kids scrounging for candy after a busted piñata. A myriad of 12-inch black varnished discs wrapped in trippy art and plastic are stuffed in wooden crates lining the two-story building in Cincinnati’s Northside neighborhood. Joplin may be crooning her manly blues, but one faint sound resonates through my ears: the crinkle and smack of plastic being fanatically pulled apart. Shoppers are flipping through LPs almost as fast as Hendrix could fingerpick the solo in “Voodoo Child.”

In 1952, the first record chart was printed in the UK by the New Musical Express.

On November 8, 1956, at the Bradley Film and Recording Studios, the immortal Patsy Cline recorded her one of her signature songs "Walkin' After Midnight."

"Walkin' After Midnight" is a song by written by Alan Block and Donn Hecht and originally recorded by American country music artist Patsy Cline. The song was originally given to pop singer Kay Starr; however, it was rejected by her record label. The song was left unused until Hecht rediscovered the song when writing for Four Star Records. Originally Cline was not fond of "Walkin' After Midnight", but after making a compromise with her label, she recorded it.

In January 1957, Cline performed the song on an episode of the CBS television program, Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. It garnered a strong response from viewers, and was therefore rush-released as a single February 11, 1957. "Walkin' After Midnight" became Cline's first major hit single, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard country music chart, and No. 12 on its pop chart. Although the song was her only hit until 1961, the single version sold over one million copies and is often included on authoritative lists of the all-time greatest songs in country music.



In 1963, Dick Clark's traveling Caravan of Stars opens its Fall tour featuring Bobby Vee, The Ronettes, Brian Hyland, Little Eva and the Dovells.

In 1968, after six years of marriage, Cynthia Powell Lennon is granted a divorce from her husband John. He is absent from the London court, staying with Yoko Ono in a hospital, where it is feared she might suffer a miscarriage (which she did on November 21).

In 1969, "Wedding Bell Blues" topped the Billboard Hot 100, giving The Fifth Dimension their second US number one record. The song was originally recorded as a private joke between group members Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., who were engaged at the time.

Also in 1969, on the second date of their US tour, The Rolling Stones break the Los Angeles concert gross record held by The Beatles since 1966. They added an extra date to their L.A. Forum stand and a fourth date to their upcoming gig at New York's Madison Square Garden.

In 1970 - Jim Morrison recorded spoken-word poems that would eventually be turned into the album An American Prayer.

On this day in 1971, Led Zeppelin released their fourth album. With no title printed on the album, and generally referred to as Four Symbols, The Fourth Album or Led Zeppelin IV, it has gone on to sell over 37 million copies worldwide. The 19th century rustic oil painting on the front of the album was purchased by Robert Plant from an antique shop in Reading, Berkshire, England. The 20th century urban tower block on the back of the full gatefold LP cover is Butterfield Court in Eves Hill, Dudley, England.

No title is printed on the album because the band deliberately wanted it to be untitled, going as far as identifying themselves with four specially chosen symbols. Even so, it is generally referred to as Led Zeppelin IV, following the naming standard used by the band's first three studio albums, the symbols themselves having no verbal or written equivalent.

The two singles released from the album were Black Dog and Rock and Roll. Australia was the only country in the world to release Stairway To Heaven as a 7” vinyl EP with Black Dog and Rock and Roll on the other side.

The 19th century rustic oil painting on the front of the album was purchased from an antique shop in Reading, Berkshire by Plant. The painting was then juxtaposed and affixed to the internal, papered wall of the partly demolished suburban house for the photograph to be taken.

Page has explained that the cover of the fourth album was intended to bring out a city/country dichotomy that had initially surfaced on Led Zeppelin III:

It represented the change in the balance which was going on. There was the old countryman and the blocks of flats being knocked down. It was just a way of saying that we should look after the earth, not rape and pillage it.

However, regarding the meaning of the album cover, he has also stated:

The cover was supposed to be something that was for other people to savour rather than for me to actually spell everything out, which would make the whole thing rather disappointing on that level of your own personal adventure into the music.

The album cover was among the ten chosen by the Royal Mail for a set of "Classic Album Cover" postage stamps issued in January 2010.
