ALIVE NATURALSOUND RECORDS TO REISSUE SOUL LEGEND SWAMP DOGG'S NEWLY REMASTERED FIRST TWO SEMINAL ALBUMS FROM THE EARLY '70S: TOTAL DESTRUCTION TO YOUR MIND & RAT ON! ON MARCH 5TH!

SWAMP DOGG OFFERS FANS FREE DOWNLOADS OF "IF I DIE TOMORROW" (FROM TOTAL DESTRUCTION...) & "CREEPING AWAY" (FROM RAT ON!)

Maverick soul artist Swamp Dogg (aka Jerry Williams) has been described as the “soul genius that time forgot," and “a strange combination of Sly Stone’s progressive funk with Frank Zappa’s lyrical absurdism." In the '70s he even made the famed Nixon’s Enemies List.

Alive Naturalsound Records is proud to bring you Swamp Dogg’s first two albums, newly remastered and re-released for the very first time on vinyl since their original release in the early '70s. Total Destruction To Your Mind (1970), has been called “one of the most gloriously gonzo soul recordings of all time," while Rat On! (1971) was ranked as having one of the top ten worst album covers of all time, an achievement that Swamp Dogg is rightfully proud of to this day.

The two remastered reissues of Swamp Dogg's early '70s albums Total Destruction To Your Mind and Rat On! will be available on Black Vinyl and CD on March 5th. In addition, there will also be a very limited pressing of Colored Vinyl for both albums exclusive to mailorders through Bomp!

"He sings like some unfrozen Atlantic soul man of the sixties - his voice clarion pure, his phrasing a model of smoldering restraint." - ROLLING STONE

"He's made some of the maddest, funny, baddest, odd, angry, funkiest soul records." - MOJO

"Vocally, Swamp Dogg sounds like a cross between General Johnson (of Chairmen of the Board) and Van Morrison; as a songwriter, he’s his own man. With the exception of Sly Stone, no other soul men of the period were investigating controversial topics with such infectious musicality and good humor." – AMG

THE RETURN OF PAUL REVERE & THE RAIDERS’ MARK LINDSAY

Mark Lindsay, lead singer/songwriter/producer for the seminal 60’s Garage Rock band Paul Revere & the Raiders has released “Like Nothing That You’ve Seen,” the first single from his upcoming album which is slated for an early May 2013 release.

The song was co-written and produced by Gar Francis, songwriter/guitarist of New Jersey Garage Rock veterans, the Doughboys. “Like Nothing That You’ve Seen” features backing vocals by Myke Scavone (Doughboys), Kurt Reil (Gripweeds), and special guest, Little Steven Van Zandt. The single follows in the butt-kickin’ footsteps of Lindsay’s classic 60’s tracks with the Raiders like “Kicks,” “Stepping Out,” “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone” and “Just like Me.”

“I first met Mark Lindsay when I was recording the new Doughboys album Shakin' Our Souls,” explains co-writer/producer Gar Francis.  “I had asked Kurt, the owner of House of Vibes, if he knew of anyone who could add saxophone to a track I was working on called ‘It's A Crying Shame.’ Kurt mentioned that he was doing some sessions with Mark Lindsay, the singer from Paul Revere and the Raiders, who was also a great sax player.

“Mark came down and added the sax parts and also sang background vocals for the track. As he was leaving the session, I had casually mentioned that if he ever wanted to collaborate on some songs to give me a call.  Well after he returned home to Florida, he gave me a call and we started working on songs via e-mail for the next three months, producing a boat-load of tunes for a new Mark Lindsay album.

"’Like Nothing That You've Seen, is one of the first songs we came up with, and we decided to go into the studio to cut and release it as a single before the album. I wanted Mark to return to his Garage roots and I think we did a good job of capturing that spirit. I hope you dig it as much as we do. “

Watch for more information coming soon!

Kurt Von Stetten - Androlafi

The term "bedroom project" carries numerous pejorative connotations, namely lo-fi, half-baked experimentation. But in the world of Kurt von Stetten, the bedroom is merely ground zero for songs that transcend time and genre. Harnessing von Stetton's love of early 90s indie rock (think Pavement, Sebadoh and early Modest Mouse) interweaved with his own insecurities, fears and passions, von Stetton's seventh solo outing Androlafi is his most accomplished and self-assured, a record that proudly stands alongside DIY revisionists Kurt Vile and Ty Segall, and also the seminal 90s output of his heroes.

Kurt von Stetten began experimenting with music and recordings in Boston during the summer of 1996. During this time, he began to experience terrible bouts of "self proclaimed"  bromhidrosis (look it up), forcing him to record alone in his bedroom. For a period of 10 years, von Stetten holed up in his bedroom studio and learned how to play guitar and drums by recording himself over and over again. Since 2006 he has released a full-length album every year for the last 7 years on which he plays every instrument (Guitar, Vocals, Cello, Keys, Drums/Percussion and Bass).

The themes of Androlafi (aka Witches) are conjured from von Stetten's obsession with gothic folklore and the eternally frightening cautionary tales told to children. "I think that most of these songs reference fear and how people deal with fear," explains von Stetten. "Many of the songs are based on the stories my mother and father told me about their childhood and the stories that were told to them. These stories were fun and fantastic, but meant to mask great anxieties. Fear is a powerful motivator and the impetus for a lot of beauty."

DUKE ELLINGTON TRIBUTE ALBUM, THE DUKE

The Duke finds Joe Jackson interpreting 15 Ellington classics over the course of ten tracks, interspersing melodic and rhythmic elements of various compositions in a manner that's consistent with Ellington's own freewheeling approach.  Rather than emulating the songs' original big-band settings, Jackson filters the material through his own musical imagination while exploring an assortment of unexpected grooves and textures.  The resulting album is a seamless fusion of sounds and styles, whose abundant sense of playfulness is consistent with Ellington's boundary-breaking attitude.

Jackson’s distinctive voice is featured on I’m Beginning To See The Light, Mood Indigo, and I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good), while It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) finds him trading vocals with punk icon Iggy Pop. R&B diva Sharon Jones, meanwhile, shines with a soulful I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues. In keeping with Ellington’s multiculturalism, Jackson also encouraged Iranian singer Sussan Deyhim to perform a soaring Caravan in Farsi, and Lilian Vieira, of the Brazilian/Dutch collective Zuco 103, to create a sunny, sexy Portuguese version of Perdido.

The album’s striking mix of electronic and organic textures is especially evident on instrumentals like Isfahan featuring Steve Vai and Berlin electronic musician Kris Ingram Lanzaro, Rockin’ In Rhythm, The Mooche, and Black and Tan Fantasy. The musicians include two contemporary jazz stars, violinist Regina Carter and bassist Christian McBride; rock guitar hero Steve Vai; drummer Ahmir 'Questlove’ Thompson   and other members of The Roots; and two of Jackson’s old associates, guitarist Vinnie Zummo and percussionist Sue Hadjopoulos. Two album tracks (PERDIDO and IT DON'T MEAN A THING) were recorded in collaboration with Zuco 103 at their studio in Amsterdam. The remaining tracks were recorded, and the whole album mixed, in New York by legendary producer/engineer Elliot Scheiner.

Though The Duke is a tribute album, it’s also very much a Joe Jackson album, consistent with his long-standing sense of musical adventure.

Tracks

1. Isfahan (with Steve Vai)
2. Caravan (with Sussan Deyhim)
3. I'm Beginning To See The Light / Take The 'A' Train / Cotton Tail (with Christian McBride & Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson)
4. Mood Indigo (with Regina Carter & Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson)
5. Rockin' In Rhythm (with Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson)
6. I Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues / Do Nothin' 'Til You Hear From Me (with Sharon Jones & Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson)
7. I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good) (with Sue Hadjopoulos)
8. Perdido / Satin Doll (with Lilian Vieira)
9. The Mooche / Black And Tan Fantasy (with Vinnie Zummo & Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson)
10. It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) (with Iggy Pop)

JOE JACKSON  -  THE DUKE  -  Bio

“I revere the Duke, but I didn’t want to make a reverent album”, Joe Jackson says of The Duke, his new tribute to jazz legend Duke Ellington.

The Duke is indeed an unconventional salute to Ellington, demonstrating the timeless brilliance of his compositions while showcasing Jackson’s skills as arranger, instrumentalist and singer. Though it’s his second album of non-original material (after 1981’s Jumpin’ Jive) it’s nonetheless a deeply personal project for Jackson, whose affinity for Ellington has been an inspiration throughout his own three-decade-plus career.

The Duke finds the iconoclastic Jackson – a five-time Grammy nominee – interpreting 15 Ellington classics over ten tracks, ingeniously combining several songs into medleys. Rather than emulating the original big-band arrangements, Jackson filters the material through his own musical imagination. The result is a surprising yet seamless fusion of styles, whose abundant playfulness is consistent with Ellington’s own freewheeling approach.

“Ellington didn’t consider his own arrangements to be sacred”, Jackson notes. “He constantly reworked them, sometimes quite radically. So I think my approach is in the spirit of the man himself”.

Jackson used no horns on The Duke – an audacious move, considering how they dominated the original recordings. “That was my only rule”, he says. “I wanted to take it in a completely different direction, and there was a danger of just sounding like watered-down Ellington if it wasn’t different enough. Not using horns was a good place to start. It makes you think: what else can we do?” So, instead of reeds and brass, the album features synthesizers, vibraphone, accordion and string quartet.

Jackson’s passion for Ellington goes back to his teens. “I loved the fact that there was so much going on, yet it was kind of hard to pin down,” he recalls. “Within the space of 3 minutes he could go through several different moods, brilliantly and seamlessly”. Ellington’s example also shaped Jackson’s own musical approach, even when he was playing raw rock’n’roll in the wake of the British punk movement. “One of things I learned from him was how to work with musicians,” he says. “He was able to showcase the personality of every player in his band, yet still be completely in control. He had a way of leading without being a dictator, of realizing his own vision while allowing others to shine. Ellington was a big-picture guy, and that’s what I’ve aspired to be”.

The Duke is fuelled by the same restless creative urge that has made Joe Jackson’s catalogue so eclectic, yet fiercely individual. He started building his resume as a teenager, studying composition at London’s Royal Academy of Music and recording a pair of singles with pre-punk combo Arms and Legs.

Jackson’s first three albums – Look Sharp!, I’m The Man and Beat Crazy,  released between 1979 and 1980 – combined catchy, hard-hitting tunes with articulate, often humorous lyrics. Despite early commercial success, Jackson soon spread his musical wings, first with Jumpin’ Jive and then 1982’s massively successful Night and Day, on which he embraced a more sophisticated, adult approach, influenced as much by jazz and latin music as rock. He continued in a similar vein with Body and Soul (1984) Big World (1986), Blaze of Glory (1989) and Laughter and Lust (1991).

Jackson turned further away from the pop mainstream with the gentle, soul-searching Night Music (1994), the satirical rock-opera Heaven and Hell (1997) and Symphony No. 1, which won the 2000 Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album. Also in 2000, Joe released the belated sequel Night and Day II, a personal favourite which he has called his ‘most underrated album’. In 2003, Jackson surprised fans by reuniting the band from his first three albums for an acclaimed album of new songs, Volume 4, and a successful world tour. Relocating to Berlin in 2008, he recorded the minimal yet majestic Rain with just piano, voice, and his original rhythm section. The trio have since toured extensively, and in 2010 released Jackson’s favourite of his several live records, Live Music.

In addition to his own albums, Jackson has written several film scores, notably for Francis Ford Coppola’s Tucker and James Bridges’ Mike’s Murder. He has also played piano and/or sung on records by Suzanne Vega, Joan Armatrading, Ruben Blades, Rickie Lee Jones, Nina Hagen, and William Shatner. In 1999, Jackson published a well-received book, A Cure For Gravity, which he described as ‘a book about music disguised as a memoir’.

ThoughThe Duke is a tribute album, it’s also very much a Joe Jackson album, consistent with his longstanding sense of musical adventure.

“When I started this”, Jackson says, “It felt a little daunting – like, how am I gonna pull this off? But it started to pick up momentum, and took on a life of its own. I got to work with people I never thought I’d be able to get, and they were all extremely enthusiastic and supportive of the project. It all came together in a way that surpassed my expectations. And it’s been a hell of a lot of fun”.

Duke Ellington at the Hurricane Club in New York, May 1943
Ellington led his band from 1923 until his death in 1974. Ellington wrote over 1,000 compositions and his career spanned more than 50 years.  It included leading his orchestra, composing a career-spanning songbook, writing movie soundtracks, composing stage musicals and exemplary world tours. He is widely regarded as the most important composer in jazz; and he is generally considered to have elevated the perception of jazz to an art form on a par with other traditional genres of music.

ZOZOBRA Announce New Album Details

Premiere New Song "Black Holes"

Boston, MA's ZOZOBRA have revealed the details behind their latest release Savage Masters, due out April 2nd on LP/Digital via Brutal Panda Records.

The brainchild of Caleb Scofield (Cave In, Old Man Gloom), ZOZOBRA formed in 2006 and quickly released two crushing full-lengths of atmospheric sludge metal, Harmonic Tremors (2007) and Bird of Prey (2008).   Now five years later, the band has re-emerged with Savage Masters, their most aggressive and straightforward release to date.  Bursting out the gate with a bold, determined purpose, Savage Masters is an unrelenting fury of post-hardcore ferocity and sludge-tinged amplifier crunch.  This release, featuring long-time Cave In bandmates Adam McGrath (guitars) and J.R. Conners (drums), proves once and for all that ZOZOBRA are a veritable force to be reckoned with.  Savage Masters was produced and recorded by Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Pelican) and contains stunning artwork by English alchemist Glyn Smyth (Unearthly Trance, Wolves in the Throne Room, Cough).

****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE****

MONDO RELEASES THEHAUNTING AND BEAUTFIUL “POLTERGEIST” SCORE SOUNDTRACK ON LIMITED EDTION VINYL

Austin, TX--- Wednesday, February 13, 2013 --- Mondo, the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, is excited to announce the release of Jerry Goldsmith’s Poltergeist score on limited edition vinyl. Combining a love for film music and beautiful artistic renderings, Mondo commissioned original cover art from We Buy YourKids, the duo of Australian illustrators Sonny Day and Biddy Maroney.  The Poltergeist 2-disc vinyl will be available for purchase for $25 on February 22 via MondoTees.com andwill include a small portion of randomly inserted clear vinyl copies.  The full track list appears at the bottom and includes 5 tracks never before released on vinyl.

The Poltergeist vinyl soundtrack release continues Mondo’s commitment to crafting beautiful packaging for scores they love and adds to an eclectic collection that now includes The Beyond, Deadly Spawn, Maniac and the upcoming vinyl release for Drive.  Much more is on the horizon for 2013.

JerryGoldsmith's soundtrack for Steven Spielberg's Poltergeist formed a significant part of the 1982 film's conceptual strength.  Known for the intensity of his thematic exposition, Goldsmith designs the Poltergeist soundtrack to elaborately ground the film between the promise of suburban repose andthe malevolent unknown. Beginning in innocence with a classic rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner," the soundtrack parallels the film's intrusion of angry ghosts into the California home of the film's protagonists with dreadful strings and eerie keys. Goldsmith then switches to airier strings and an ethereal flute to denote the family's fumbling after their daughter, Carol Anne, is abducted. Utilizing frenzied horn blasts and a sudden lapse into atonalism, the composer ominously signifies the emergence of the Beast. Goldsmith, seemingly effortless, concludes the frantic drama of "Escape From Suburbia" in stark contrast with the sweet and child-like tones of "Carol Anne's Theme," elegantly illustrating the dignity and range that his orchestral scores for horror modeled within the genre.

Mondo previously collaborated with We Buy Your Kids for a gallery show, “Tina’s Mom’s Boyfriend,” in November.  We Buy Your Kids began working together in 2006, creating screen-printed posters for local concerts.  Since then, their client list has expanded to include film, print, huge corporations, and galleries.  Often making art that the squares think is weird, they are the perfect collaborator for the Poltergeist soundtrack artwork.

For the exact sale time on February 22 follow @MondoNews on Twitter.  Full track list below, including 5 tracks (#1, #3, #4, #6 and #9) that appear on vinyl for the first time.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 11, 2013

DEAR JERRY: For over a quarter-century you have been coming to the rescue of confused and confounded music lovers. Now you can add me to that list.

While looking over a list I received of records for sale, I spotted this item:

Jerry Wallace "In the Misty Moonlight"/"Cannon Ball" (Challenge 59246)

As you know, "In the Misty Moonlight" was a huge hit for Jerry, and I have it. However, my copy has "Even the Bad Times Are Good" on the reverse side.

In fact, I have never heard of a Jerry Wallace song titled "Cannon Ball."

What does come to mind is the popular instrumental of that title by Duane Eddy. Did Jerry do a version of that music, but with words added?

Or, did the dealer simply make a mistake when preparing the list? I catch typos all the time on these things.
—Scotty Walters, Dayton, Ohio

DEAR CONFUSED AND CONFOUNDED: Your dilemma is reasonable, considering this story has enough twists to inspire a mini, mini-series.

The adventure begins in the summer of 1963, with the debut single by the Soul Surfers, "Cannon Ball" coupled with "Home from Camp" (Challenge 9209). Both are instrumentals.

This "Cannon Ball," which bears no resemblance to Duane Eddy's 1959 hit, "Cannonball," is merely a rockin' rendition of the country classic, "Wabash Cannonball" (a.k.a., "Wabash Cannon Ball").

"Home from Camp" is the band's version of Allan Sherman's "Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh (A Letter from Camp)."

About a year later (June 1964), Jerry Wallace's "In the Misty Moonlight" came out backed with "Even the Bad Times Are Good" (Challenge 59246).

As this great Cindy Walker tune headed for the Top 20, and on its way to being Wallace's biggest hit since "Primrose Lane" (1959), some stations began playing "Even the Bad Times Are Good."

After just two months, Challenge became so concerned about wasting a potential A-side that they replaced "Even the Bad Times Are Good" with "Cannon Ball," yet the selection number (59246) remained unchanged.

Now you know the list you received is accurate.

Having a humdrum filler for a B-side, "In the Misty Moonlight" ran its course without flip-side competition.

Jerry's next single came out in October, and of course it was "Even the Bad Times Are Good," this time backed with "Spanish Guitars."

Oops!

Nothing about "Spanish Guitars" is humdrum.

Challenge, and especially their co-owner and operations manager, Joe Johnson, must have been exasperated to once again see a B-side get as much or more airplay and juke box spins than the A-side.

This was especially true in southwestern markets near Mexico, such as Houston and San Diego, where "Spanish Guitars" made the local charts while "Even the Bad Times Are Good" was ignored.

Nationally, neither side made the Top 100, partly due to the split airplay. The other reason involved this British Invasion thing, the effect of which left roughly 20% fewer chart spots available for non-UK artists.

Despite the challenges Challenge faced in their effort to turn "Even the Bad Times Are Good" into a hit, they were not alone in this regard.

In mid-July 1969, Liberty Records had Jerry record a new version of "Even the Bad Times Are Good."

Unfortunately, this effort (Liberty 56155) didn't fare any better than the 1964 recordings, though it did briefly make the radio playlists of numerous country stations. For two weeks in May 1970, the single appeared on Billboard's country survey, but only reached No. 74.

Several other famous singers recorded "Even the Bad Times Are Good." Besides Jerry Wallace, the tune was waxed by: Carl Belew (though not until 1965, even though he and Clyde Pitts wrote the song); Mickey Gilley (1974); Sonny James (1965); George Jones &

Tammy Wynette (1976); Ray Pillow (1964); Connie Smith & Nat Stuckey (1973); and Conway Twitty (1973).

In 1967, a year without a significant Belew-Pitts "Even The Bad Times Are Good" recording, the Tremeloes moved into the Top 40 here and the Top 5 in Britain with a totally different song of the same title.

IZ ZAT SO? Considering how renowned and recognizable "Wabash Cannonball" is, one might find something fishy about the writing credit for "Cannon Ball." Both Challenge 9209 and 59246 name only Joe Johnson.

The most likely reason this track was chosen to replace "Even the Bad Times Are Good" is it allowed Johnson to share in the royalties for one side of a very successful single ("In the Misty Moonlight").

I am not aware of anyone challenging Mr. Johnson's writing claim for "Wabash Cannonball," though he was neither the first nor the last to do so.

Most recordings credit A.P. Carter, of the Carter Family. They had the first recorded version in 1929.

Several have no songwriting credits whatsoever. Among those are Bill Carlisle's Kentucky Boys (Decca 46045), Hugh Cross (Columbia 15439), and some early 78s by Roy Acuff and His Crazy Tennesseans (Columbia, Okeh, Vocalion, etc.). Subsequent Acuff issues do credit A.P. Carter.

Few women sang about the Cannonball, but Kay Starr did, and her Capitol 78s can be found with either A.P. Carter or "Traditional" where the writer is shown. Interestingly, Kay is accompanied by guitarist Merle Travis and His Orchestra.

Finally, Jerry Reed, Lonnie Donegan, and Dicky Doo, much like Joe Johnson, list themselves directly under the title.

Opinions vary regarding who wrote what and when, but what is known is that combined singles sales of "The Wabash Cannonball" now exceed 10 million copies. .

BIG DEAL - NEW ALBUM JUNE GLOOM– JUNE 4th, 2013

Big Deal introduced themselves with their emotive bedroom guitar ballads and electric chemistry last year via their debut release Lights Out. This June the London based duo of Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe are back with brand new album, June Gloom (June 4th, 2013) and a bold new sound.
Last year we laid out hints of a new record with “terdactol”– a lavish whirlwind of guitars, keys and percussion that assaults the senses and unleashes all of that pent up craving in one humid wave of sound. Thoughtfully arming you with a soundtrack for those tempestuous summer days June Gloom, like any good summer romance, will leave you enraptured.

Fleshing out their delicate, nocturnal tones Kacey and Alice take their sound to deeper, darker and more intoxicating height, courtesy of producer Rory Attwell (Veronica Falls, PAWS, Male Bonding) and a full band featuring bass and drums.

As a result, the 11 other tracks here are an exploration of the newfound confidence of ‘teradactol’, with a refinement and bold directness. If Big Deal’s earlier tracks felt emotionally lacerating, this new body of work is noisy, boisterous, with a more than assured melodic hook. This evolution is made defiantly clear in the opener ‘golden light‘, which deliberately unhinges the listener by opening with sweetly strummed chords and interlocking vocals before building to a rousing climax. Similarly, ‘dream machines’ crests on a jagged undertow of pounding drums, and the sinister ‘pillow’ gradually opens up to become something vast, scorched and desolate. The pair infuse the volume with their own inimitable, off-kilter take on angst-ridden emotional terrain; on the aptly titled ‘pristine’, they sing, “darkness wash over me, I let it in, it let me be”, while on the otherwise upbeat ‘call and i’ll come’ Costelloe plaintively asks, “What if no one else compares/ what if no one else cares?” It all reaches a beautiful crescendo with the finale ‘close your eyes’, which explodes from an almost unbearably intimate confessional (“I won’t ask why/ if it was love/ we let it die”) into a coruscating maelstrom that is as indelibly affecting as it is thrilling.

With June Gloom, Big Deal has expanded their sonic palette without losing any of their potency.
