of Montreal - Lousy with Sylvianbriar

of Montreal's new album 'Lousy with Sylvianbriar' is out now!

There are less than 100 copies remaining of the Early Bird Edition 180-Gram Sea Glass Green vinyl, so if you're planning to grab one for yourself there's no better time than now!

Lousy with Sylvianbriar was created with a new songwriting approach, a different recording method, and a fresh group of musicians.

Seeking creative inspiration, Kevin Barnes re-located to San Francisco where he spent days soaking in the strange surroundings and channeling the city's energy into his writing. After a very prolific period there, he returned to Athens, GA, and assembled the cast of musicians to begin the sessions.

Barnes eschewed computer recording -- with its pitch correction, limitless effects plug-ins and editing possibilities -- and instead, with the help of engineer Drew Vandenberg (Deerhunter, Toro y Moi), he recorded Lousy with Sylvianbriar in his home studio on a 24-track tape machine.

With no computer tricks to fall back on, the band -- Kevin Barnes (guitars, bass, vocals), Rebecca Cash (vocals), Clayton Rychlik (drums, vocals), Jojo Glidewell (keys), Bob Parins (pedal steel, bass), and Bennet Lewis (guitars, mandolin) -- could only get out of the recordings what they put into them.

Most of the tracking was recorded live with the band in the same room together. They worked quickly, with the band members composing their parts on the fly and with little second guessing. The album was recorded in just three weeks.

"I knew I wanted the process to be more in line with the way people used to make albums in the late 60s and early 70s," reveals Barnes. "I wanted to work fast and to maintain a high level of spontaneity and immediacy. I wanted the songs to be more lyric-driven, and for the instrumental arrangements to be understated and uncluttered.”

Opening track and lead single "Fugitive Air" feels like a Stones-y anthem, with sparks of Philip K. Dick's psychedelic prose, Ralph Bakshi's cartoon violence, and William S. Burroughs' hyper-paranoia.

"Belle Glade Missionaries" finds Barnes lyrically at his most political, backed by a soundtrack that is pure Dylan circa Highway 61 Revisited.

Vocalist Rebecca Cash makes several appearances on the album, taking the lead on the plaintive "Raindrop in My Skull," where her and Barnes share a Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris-inspired duet.

"She Ain't Speakin' Now" ranks among of Montreal's all-time great songs, transforming its brooding acoustic guitar intro into a visceral angst-ridden rocker that sounds like the best moments of Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

The album's closer, "Imbecile Rages," a caustic and doleful epitaph for a crumbling relationship, is one of Barnes' most raw and personal statements.

Like the classic albums that inspired it, this is an album to be explored, to be lived with, to be listened to in happiness and in darkness, to be dissolved into. To be played very loudly at parties and with eyes closed, in headphones, alone. It should become dog-eared and dirty with use and it should lessen the blow of our enemies, in all their forms

Silverchair - Frogstomp - Vinyl 2-LP

Silverchair's 1995 debut album, Frogstomp, faithfully follows the alternative rock tradition of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, which means that the group of Australian teenagers winds up sounding not like their idols, but like Stone Temple Pilots and Bush. For their age, their instrumental capabilities are quite impressive, as the guitars and vocals growl with the force of rockers in their early 20s.

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

Willie Nelson - To All The Girls...

The new Willie Nelson album To All The Girls… is a collection of newly recorded duets between American musical legend Willie Nelson and a dream list of contemporary Pop-Country women singers, recorded mainly in Nashville. It features a selection of profoundly moving and heartfelt performances of classic songs from America's Country, Pop and Gospel repertoire and more.

His third full-length album of new music to be released in a mere 16 months, To All The Girls… celebrates Willie's 80th birthday year, just like Let's Face The Music And Dance was released in April 2013.

The latter comprises of a range of Pop, Rock, Jazz and Country classics chosen by Nelson, praised by critics and peaking #49 on the Billboard 200. 180 gram audiophile vinyl and Insert

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Made Up Mind

Made Up Mind is the highly anticipated follow-up to Tedeschi Trucks Band's scorching live collection, Everybody's Talkin'. TTB is known for their extraordinary family of musicians, and Made Up Mind continues that tradition as most tracks were penned by husband-and-wife Tedeschi and Trucks along with various friends and co-writers. The album was co-produced by Trucks and Jim Scott (Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco).

Made Up Mind features "Part of Me," a song driven by a classic southern soul groove straight out of Muscle Shoals. The raucous soul-rocker title track "Made Up Mind" demonstrates the full power of the band from the album's first notes. Other highlights are the über-funky "Misunderstood", tender ballads like "It's So Heavy" and "Calling Out to You."

Derek Trucks has indisputably matured into one of the finest guitarists of our time, tearing up barnburners with his masterful slide and lead lines while showcasing his easier, more subtle touch on the bluesy "Do I Look Worried."  Brand new album for 2013! 180 gram audiophile vinyl Insert Includes digital download code.

Dream Theater - Once In A Livetime

The first official live album of Dream Theater, Once In A LIVEtime, was released to great critical acclaim in 1998 after recording an intense live show in Paris earlier that year. Their musical skills guarantee a legendary performance, at times resembling Yes' or Emerson, Lake & Palmer's prog prowess.

Highlights include their instrumental tour de force "Ytse Jam" as well as the fan favorites "Pull Me Under", "Lie", "Metropolis" and certain portions of their lengthy "A Change of Seasons" composition.

Combined, this recording takes 2,5 hours to experience from front to back, and so this release deserves all 4 LP's the grooves are pressed on. Available on vinyl for the first time! 180 gram audiophile vinyl Insert Gatefold sleeve

Boston - Don't Look Back

Lightning never strikes twice in the same place, but when it does, it does so with a vengeance. After gaining huge success with the debut Boston, Boston's main songwriter Tom Scholz worked on the sophomore album for two years and this resulted in yet another perfectly produced piece of art.

Released in 1978, Don't Look Back eventually reached 7 times Platinum. The album contains the radio hit "Don't Look Back", sturdy Rockers like "Party" and "Feelin' Satisfied" and mellow songs like "It's Easy". This stuff is top of the bill and you know it! 180 gram audiophile vinyl Gatefold sleeve Lyric sheet

Mothers Finest - Another Mother Further

Another Mother Further was the second album of Georgia Funk Rock formation Mother's Finest, released in 1977. Opening track "Mickey's Monkey" is a highly effective cover of Smokey Robinson's original, setting the mood for this album from the get go. "Dis Go Dis Way, Dis Go Dat Way" is an ode to Disco's heyday, featuring a hip comping clavinet and percussive outro.

This album rocks and funks at the same time – available on 180 gram audiophile vinyl for the first time!

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 7, 2013

DEAR JERRY:   Two years ago I requested your help identifying a song played in a Breaking Bad episode ("Full Measure") from Season 3.

If you recall, that one turned out to be "Crapa Pelada (Testa Pelata)," by the Italian group, Quartetto Cetra.

Now the producers have done it to us again, by using a song in the show without a clue as to where it came from.

This tune is heard in its entirety over the opening credits, in the Season 5 episode "Ozymandias."

All I can say is this song is lyrically appropriate to the storyline, except for "money's gettin' scarce."
—Len Bristow, Albuquerque

DEAR LEN: You got that right. Walter White's (Bryan Cranston) cash stash was indeed down to roughly $11 million at that time.

Ah yes, that wonderful yet unidentified music. It is "Times Are Getting Hard," probably the best track from the Limeliters self-titled album, but never released as a single. This, their debut album, was originally issued by Elektra Records in March 1960, in monaural (EKL-180) and stereo (EKS-7180).

Rarely do songs undergo a complete name change, but this one did.

Subsequent Limeliters albums list "Times Are Getting Hard" as "Take My True Love By the Hand," and that includes compact discs of the 21st century, among them two repackages of the original Elektra LP.

So why the change?

If based on the number of times the lines are sung, consider the following:

"Times Are Getting Hard" is not heard at all, but "times are gettin' hard" is sung only twice.

"Take My True Love By the Hand" is also not heard, but "take my true love by HER hand" is sung five times.

If repetition were a factor, and we're not saying it is, then "goodbye to everyone" should be the title. You'll hear that line 12 times!

Song title notwithstanding, this is a classic folk song that showcases some beautiful whistling and singing by the one and only Glenn Yarbrough.

Elektra's "The Limeliters," Mr. Yarbrough, plus Alex Hassilev and Lou Gottlieb, didn't chart at all in 1960, but when reissued a little over a year later, it was a much different story. By then, RCA Victor signed the trio and their first album for Nipper, "Tonight: In Person" (LPM/LSP-2272), made the Top 5, eventually spending over 18 months on the LP charts.

Buoyed by that success, plus the folk music boom in general, even the Elektra reissue entered the Top 40.

Along with the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary, the Limeliters led the contemporary folk scene in the early '60s. Unlike these other two trios, the Limeliters managed to succeed without the benefit of even one Top 50 single.

The Limeliters of the current century, Andy Corwin, Gaylan Taylor, and Don Marovich, were as surprised as anyone to discover "Times Are Getting Hard" (a.k.a. "Take My True Love By the Hand") on the Emmy-winning Breaking Bad. Andy Corwin posted this reaction:

"First, the Limeliters are still around, still recording and still touring. This I know for sure, because I am a member of the group.

"As for 'Times Are Getting Hard,' we haven't been performing this song in recent years, but now I'm thinking that we should probably bring it back."

By doing so, Andy, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

You could even combine the two by adding a subtitle: "Times Are Getting Hard (Take My True Love By Her Hand)."

No matter what title you use, that tune would now be the highlight of your concerts.

DEAR JERRY: I heard a snippet of "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport," by Rolf Harris, and, reportedly the Beatles. Did they really sing with him? If so, when and where? I've never heard of a connection between them.
—Marsha Billings, Birmingham, Ala.

DEAR MARSHA:  Rolf Harris was the host of the BBC radio show, "From Us to You," recorded in London on December 18, 1963, to be broadcast the day after Christmas, also known as Boxing Day.

The Beatles sang 10 songs, including the UK's No. 1 hit at the time, "I Want to Hold Your Hand." They also clowned around while backing Rolf Harris on a wacky version of "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport."

Harris created four new "Kangaroo" verses especially for this show, one to lampoon each of the Beatles.

IZ ZAT SO? In a see-saw pattern of sorts, Rolf Harris' two biggest hits couldn't seem to click simultaneously on both sides of the Atlantic. "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" made the UK Top 10 in the summer of 1960, while the U.S. release did absolutely nothing. There's no indication it made anyone's chart here.

That is until 1963, when a newly-recorded version came out in the U.S. Then, "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" reached No. 3 on Billboard, but did nothing in the UK.

In December 1969, Rolf's "Two Little Boys" began six weeks as Great Britain's No. 1 hit. Meanwhile, in the States, MGM's release of "Two Little Boys" didn't even bubble under, meaning it failed to enter the Top 135, or so.

What's the Hot New Place to Get The Best Music From the Heavy Underground?  Ripple Music Unveils HeavyRipples Distribution - Psych, Stoner, Doom and More.

North America's Exclusive Distributor for Vincerebus Eruptum - the voice of the underground.

Five years in the making, Ripple Music is proud to announce the creation of Heavy Ripples Distro (heavyripples.bigcartel.com), the best new source to find LP's, CD's, 7"'s, Tee's, Magazines, and more from some of the most esteemed bands in the heavy underground.

Noting that the burgeoning underworld of bands pumping out stoner, doom, heavy psych and metal mania were horribly under-served by today's current distribution system, Racer and Pope--the head honchos of the hard-rocking Label, Ripple Music-- decided that something had to be done.  Knowing that there were tons of excellent heavy bands that couldn't get widespread distribution because they weren't "hot enough" for some of the current heavy distributors, or not signed to a big enough label, Racer and Pope decided to put together a Distro that could benefit from the years of experience and channels they'd gained with Ripple Music.

And Heavy Ripples Distro was born.

Featuring heavy bands from North America, Europe, Australia, South America and beyond, HeavyRipples doesn't discriminate against bands who may not move 100 copies or are self-produced and totally D.I.Y.  The only criteria for HeavyRipples is that the bands rock- pure, unadulterated riff-mad heaviness.  Utilizing a "bare minimum" fee strategy, Heavy Ripples Distrooffers bands the opportunity to have their music distributed world-wide with the lowest possible fees, allowing the bands to recoup the greatest return on their music while getting maximum exposure and the opportunity to offer thei music to heavy rock fans at the best prices on the web. It's an entirely new model for heavy music distribution and one HeavyRipples Distro hopes can maximize the viral spread of the heavy rock.

Recognizing the dedication Heavy Ripples Distro has to the underground scene, some of the leading Labels in heavy rock jumped at the chance to join in, with Labels like Cosmic Artifactz, Buried by Time and Dust, PsychDoomelic, and Ozium Records all offering the best of their heaviness.

And there's more.  HeavyRipples Distro is now the exclusive North American Distributor of Vincerebus Eruptum (www.vincebuseruptum.it), the world's leading magazine devoted to the stoner, doom, and heavy psych rock scene.  Produced in Italy, Vincerebus Eruptum brings interviews, features, news, and reviews of such heavy legends as Colour Haze, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats Orchid, Kadavar, Witchraft, and more.  All in a slick, full-color format and for only $7 per issue.
