Sap was originally released early 1992, half a year before Dirt came out. It features guest appearances by Ann Wilson (Heart), Mark Arm (Mudhoney) and Chris Cornell (Soundgarden). Jar Of Flies was released in January 1994 and shows a side of the band that was unknown until then: predominately acoustic songs and the use of instruments like the harmonica and a talk-box.

Motorhead - Aftershock

Like the juggernaut you prayed would keep on crushing you, like the friend that still royally pisses off your parents and like a loyal standard of crunchy, greasy, punky, bluesy, gutsy screw-you Rock'n'Roll, Motörhead stride out through their 38th year brandishing more swagger and attitude than your tiny ears could begin to comprehend... ...because on Oct 18th , 2013 Motörhead will deliver their 21st studio album, an enormous and prophetic Aftershock. Recorded at NRG Studios in North Hollywood. It is a true leveler, a crushing confirmation of everything Motörhead stands for, marching from the dust storm to deliver 14 belting statements which see Motörhead in perhaps their best writing form for years. There's swagger, there's punch, there's speed and there's dirty filthy grooves, Lemmy Kilmister, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee showing clearly that Motörhead is not simply a band, it's a genre!

Tune In: Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day U.S. TV Debut

LED ZEPPELIN’S CELEBRATION DAY MAKES ITS U.S.TELEVISION DEBUT ON AXS TV, SUNDAY, NOV. 24 AT 8 P.M. ET/5 P.M. PT

LEGENDARY 2007 CONCERT FILM AIRS ON ‘AXS TV CONCERTS’ EVERY NIGHT AT 8 P.M. ET/5 P.M. PT STARTING NOV. 24 THROUGH THANKSGIVING NOV. 28

Continuing its mission to bring music back to television, AXS TV will showcase the television premiere of Led Zeppelin's Celebration Day concert film. Recorded live at London's O2 Arena on December 10, 2007, the film captures a two-hour-plus tour de force of the band’s signature blues-infused rock ’n’ roll that instantly became part of the legend of Led Zeppelin. Founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to perform 16 songs from their celebrated catalog including landmark tracks “Whole Lotta Love,” “Rock And Roll,” “Kashmir,” and “Stairway To Heaven.” Although 20 million people applied for tickets, the band’s first headline show in 27 years was seen only by the 18,000 ticket holders who were fortunate enough to have secured seats through the worldwide lottery.

The historic concert will premiere on AXS TV CONCERTS, Sunday, Nov. 24 at 8-10 p.m. ET (5-7 p.m. PT). There will be encore broadcasts every night of the week at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from Monday, Nov. 25 through Thursday, Nov. 28, Thanksgiving. The concert premiered theatrically last year and is also available on Blu-Ray, DVD, CD, vinyl, and digital download, but has never been seen on television prior to its debut on AXS TV.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 18, 2013

DEAR JERRY: As a kid in the '50s, I never once saw any of the trade magazines that ranked the current hits. There were no issues of Billboard, Cash Box, Variety, or any similar publications on newsstands in my area.

We relied on American Bandstand and local radio station surveys to keep up with the top hits.

Looking back, I'm wondering how Bandstand's top songs matched Billboard for any given week. Was that their source?
—Tom Garfield, Sheboygan, Wis.

DEAR TOM: Great question, and one I enjoyed researching.

After close review, the answer is no. In fact, some of the American Bandstand Top 10 lists (usually displayed on Dick Clark's podium) make me wonder if they paid any attention to the published charts, often to the point of bewilderment.

For example, let's examine Bandstand's Top 10 for the first week of October 1956, and how each entry fared in the national trades:

1. "Hound Dog"/"Don't Be Cruel" (Elvis Presley)
No surprise, as this disc was the No. 1 hit of the year, and of the entire decade.

2. "Canadian Sunset" (Hugo Winterhalter and His Orchestra Featuring Eddie Heywood)
This entry matches Hugo and Eddie's success on all of the charts.

From here down, AB's list reflects a great deal of independent thinking.

3. "Be-Bop-a-Lula" (Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps)
Among the Top 100 then, but not quite in the Top 10.

4. "A Casual Look" (Six Teens)
Never in or even reasonably close to the Top 10.

5. "Can't We Be Sweethearts" (Cleftones)
A doo-wop classic that quite amazingly failed to appear on either the Pop or R&B charts. Kudos to Bandstand for listing it.

6. "Stranded in the Jungle" (Jayhawks)
Not sure why Clark listed only the Jayhawks, since the Cadets had the more popular version, both then and thereafter. Also charted by the Gadabouts, but none of the three reached the Top 10 nationally.

7. "Theme from 'The Proud Ones'" (Buddy Morrow and His Orchestra)
Like "Stranded in the Jungle" in that three versions charted; however, in this case, Bandstand didn't mention any of those. Why they chose Buddy Morrow's record is puzzling. It never appeared nationally on any of the possible charts.

8. "Reddy Teddy" (Little Richard)
This is the B-side of "Rip It Up," which is noticeably absent from the AB Top 10. Both songs were popular, but "Rip It Up" was definitely the top side.

9. "Love Me Tender" (Elvis Presley)
Just released this week and on its way to No. 1.

10. "Somebody's Gotta Lose" (Hi-Fi's)
The Hi-Fi's join Buddy Morrow as the two mystery tunes that week. Neither seem like big favorites of Bandstand's teenage audience. "Somebody's Gotta Lose" is a run-of-the-mill pop quartet ballad that never appeared on any of the principal surveys we've seen.

Our conclusion is that American Bandstand definitely did not merely echo anyone else's chart that week. In fact, they had very little in common with any other surveys.

DEAR JERRY: Been racking my brain trying to remember what pet name Billy Williams uses when he calls his lady friend in the song "Shanghai."

No one has ever been able to answer this question for me.
—Sheldon Gibbs, Vincennes, Ind.

DEAR SHELDON: I guess you already know it is not Sheldon.

When she answers the phone, he says "Hello honey, this is your little oodle boodle scootle boodle doodle."

He then confesses that he did not go to Shanghai, as he earlier indicated during "a little misunderstanding," and was really calling from "right around the corner in a phone booth."

From the sound of her voice, Shanghai strikes me as the better option.

IZ ZAT SO? In order of sales and popularity, here are the three top recordings of "Shanghai," all issued in 1951. Each can be found with a title slightly unlike the other two:

1. "(Why Did I Tell You I Was Going To) Shanghai" - Doris Day with Paul Weston and His Orchestra (Columbia 39423)
2. "Shanghai" - Billy Williams Quartet (MGM 10998). This can also be found with the same title as on Doris Day's Columbia disc
3. "Why Did I Tell You I Was Going To Shanghai" - Bing Crosby with Dave Barbour's Orchestra (Decca 27653)

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SPACELAB9 DEBUTS WITH LIMITED EDITION VINYL RELEASES FOR BREAKING BAD AND THE WALKING DEAD

Coming to planet earth during November 2013, record label imprint Spacelab9 makes its debut with vinyl releases for the official score to AMC and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s hit series and Emmy® winning drama BREAKING BAD followed by the official soundtrack to multi-award winning fan-favorite drama series THE WALKING DEAD. A limited picture disc LP edition for each will be available exclusively from lifestyle retail giant HOT TOPIC, hitting store shelves on November 26th and December 3rd respectively, available while supplies last.

This marks the first time that “BREAKING BAD (Original Score From The Television Series)” will be offered on vinyl format. The 2-disc set features nearly one hour of original music composed by Dave Porter, including the now-iconic “Breaking Bad Main Title Theme.” “AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD (official soundtrack Vol.1)” also makes its vinyl debut, featuring tracks from composer Bear McCreary and artists Jamie N. Commons, Voxhaul Broadcast, Baby Bee, Fink, Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene) & Emily Kinney (Beth Greene) as well as multiplatinum Icelandic artists Of Monsters and Men.

Conceived of by music industry veteran Dave Amcher and staffed by fellow record collectors, film buffs and all-around fanboy fanatics, SPACELAB9 takes a 360 view of music and pop culture fandom with a wide variety of merchandise in the works. Amcher speaks enthusiastically about the prospects for the new imprint. “Most of us involved with SL9 have worked together running traditional record labels since the mid-1990s. Many a Monday morning has been spent taking turns showing off the spoils from the previous weekend’s plundering of record shows, comic-cons, horror conventions, indie-movie screenings and game pre-sales followed by the inevitable discussion about how we would love to spend more time creating cool merchandise outside of the boundaries of the traditional music industry, given the opportunity. The recent sale of one of our popular label imprints presented just such an opportunity so that’s exactly what we intend to do. Records, art prints, t-shirts and apparel, even action figures and model kits. If it’s fun and it’s something that we would love to own as fans, we’ll consider it. We’re leaving no possibilities off the table.”

EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER’S GROUNDBREAKING BRAIN SALAD SURGERY TO RECEIVE ULTIMATE EXPANSION INCLUDING BRAND NEW 5.1 MIX AND HIGH RESOLUTION STEREO MIXES, ALTERNATE TAKES AND PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED MATERIAL

180 GRAM VINYL AND EXCLUSIVE 40TH ANNIVERSARY SHIRTS AVAILABLE NOW

On the 40th anniversary of its release, Razor & Tie are proud to announce that Brain Salad Surgery, the definitive and indispensible album by Prog rock giants Emerson Lake &Palmer (ELP), will receive its greatest expansion ever.  A Super Deluxe Edition of Brain Salad Surgery will be released on April 8, 2014, with 180 gram vinyl in original packaging and EXCLUSIVE 40th Anniversary shirts available now at elp.merchnow.com.

Featuring the original HR Giger artwork, brand new 5.1 mixes and previously unreleased material, Brain Salad Surgery will receive a 40th anniversary celebration worthy of its genre defining place in history. Brain Salad Surgery is an album that saw Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer displaying more creativity than most bands achieve in their whole lifetime.

“We are amazed that after 40 years, so much of the original recordings, photos and artwork are still usable. Some of it has never been releasedbefore, but it’s fascinating to hear how the recording progress. We are delighted that this new version will reveal some of these transitions,” says Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

1973’s Brain Salad Surgery, was ELP’s first album on theirown Manticore imprint. With its fold-out sleeve designed by HR Giger, it was all guns blazing, trophy taking, the karmic, the cosmic, the symphonic, all distilled into two sides of vinyl. From their rendition of the William Blake/Hubert Parry hymn ‘Jerusalem’ to Emerson’s adaptation of Alberto Ginastera’s “Toccata”, this was a world-class album. And that is before the side and a half long “Karn Evil 9.” It became their greatest statement, their calling card, the one every self-respecting music fan fell in love with, complete with their catchphrase in song, “Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends . . .”

Full details of the 40th Anniversary expansive edition of ‘Brain Salad Surgery’ will be revealed early in 2014

LIARS --RETURN WITH A NEW ALBUM MARCH 2014 WATCH & HEAR

LIARS : Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross will release a brand new album, the follow up to WIXIW, in March 2014.

Tracks from the as-yet-untitled album were performed on recent dates at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur, MoMA PS1, Primavera Sound and Sónar Music Festivals. The album has been teased by the band in a series of cryptic trailers which you can view here.

The band are currently finishing the album at their studio in Los Angeles and have said that work on the new album was “almost the exact opposite experience to producing WIXIW”. WIXIW saw Liars experimenting with unfamiliar techniques, and, according to Angus Andrew, “Instead of being doubtful, work on the new album has been immediate, fun, instinctual and confident”.

Learning from their experiences with WIXIW has found the band embracing spontaneity and, as Andrew explains,

“Creation for creation’s sake. No rules. No mistakes’.

Liars were recently invited by Hedi Slimane to rework a track to soundtrack Yves Saint Laurent’s SS14 Paris Fashion Week catwalk show. Listen to their 19 minute version of “Mr Your On Fire Mr” here: soundcloud.com/liars

NASHVILLE BASED AMERICANA SINGER-SONGWRITER JACE EVERETT RELEASES VINYL VERSION OF LATEST ALBUM TERRA ROSA  AND LIMITED EDITION 12” HIT SINGLE “BAD THINGS”

The Theme Song From HBO Hit Series TRUE BLOOD

TERRA ROSA:
A hallucinatory hybrid of blues, country, boogie, gospel, and rock; CD, DIGITAL AND VINYL FORMATS AVAILABLE NOW  via Haywood Group Productions, Redeye Distribution

Journeyman songwriter Jace Everett officially releases his new album, Terra Rosa on vinyl along with a limited edition 12” single version of the popular track “Bad Things” (with B-side/alternate take on Terra Rosa track “Beyond The Wall” on November 12.

He recorded Terra Rosa last year in Nashville with longtime collaborators and co-producer Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Hayes Carll, Chuck Prophet) and multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Dan Cohen.

Terra Rosa is at heart an intensely intimate album. Its invention and irreverence all reflect Everett's own struggles with faith and doubt. Terra Rosa explores tales and themes from the Old and New Testaments. He interprets the Bible through his own perspective, looking at love, death, faith and America while alluding to Sodom & Gomorrah, Jonah and the Whale, and Peter the Rock. Terra Rosa is Everett's most ambitious album to date, a raucous, revelatory song cycle.

"The truth is, all these songs are about me," Everett says, "trying to figure out what I believe and don't believe. It's me going back to my closet and pulling all the skeletons out, looking at the bones and seeing what's there. I wanted to write songs you haven’t heard before.”

Jace Everett has long earned acclaim for his remarkable artistic range and always-impressive songwriting. Born in Evansville, IN and raised in Grapevine, TX, he eventually made his way to Music City, USA and scored his first #1 hit co-writing Josh Turner's RIAA platinum-certified 2006 country smash, "Your Man.” Everett continues to grow his gritty, groovy sound with frequent international tours, raising up a fervent fan following at every turn.

The Maze - Armageddon

LIMITED EDITION COLORED VINYL-LP

The advent of ear-splitting, cortex-skewering bands like the Maze really did signal the end of the sixties. But just like that ultimate orgasmic blast during the finale of a great fireworks show, what a perfect way to go.

A true rarity among 60’s psych collectors, all of the cuts here appeared on the original Maze album. Recorded at various studio sessions from September 1967 to March 1968 at Leo Kulka’s Golden State Recorders in San Francisco, this glittering psychedelic diamond is presented here in it’s previously unheard original MONO mix!

The Byrds - The Preflyte Sessions

LIMITED EDITION COLORED VINYL 2-LP Set

Before turning rock ‘n’ roll on its ear in the spring of ‘65, the Byrds spent countless hours creating and refining their unique sound at LA’s World Pacific Studios. Hear history literally in the making as McGuinn, Crosby, Clark, Hillman and Clarke record newborn, spine-tingling versions of classics-to-be like “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “You Won’t Have To Cry,” “I Knew I'd Want You” and “Here Without You” as well as lost gems such as “The Reason Why,” “Tomorrow Is A Long Ways Away” and “You Showed Me” (later a smash for the Turtles).

This is the most comprehensive collection of the Byrds' pre-Columbia recordings ever assembled. The 2-CD (and double High-Definition Vinyl LP set) Preflyte Sessions set is filled with 40 World Pacific Studio recordings circa 1964 and '65; tracks include all cuts found on the original Together-label Preflyte album, plus unissued and alternate versions from both the acoustic and electric Byrds' sessions, early David Crosby demo recordings, and the rare pre-Byrds Jet Set recording of "The Only Girl I Adore."

The Preflyte Sessions features a historical essay by Rolling Stone Senior Editor David Fricke – based on new interviews with Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, original Byrds' manager Jim Dickson and others present at the sessions – and is handsomely adorned with an absolute wealth of previously unpublished photos by Jim Dickson and legendary rock photographer Barry Feinstein. The Byrds' Preflyte Sessions captures the newly-kindled fire and enthusiasm of one of the most legendary and influential groups of all time.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Miami Pop Fetival

Jimi Hendrix Experience: Miami Pop Festival introduces the first recorded stage performances of "Hear My Train A Comin'" and "Tax Free" while showcasing definitive live takes on such classics as "Fire," "Hey Joe," "I Don't Live Today" and "Purple Haze." The package includes never before published photos taken at the festival and an essay by award-winning music journalist and Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli. The first ever major rock festival staged on the East Coast, the May 1968 Miami Pop Festival was the first event promoted by Michael Lang--who would organize Woodstock, the biggest pop culture event of the decade, fifteen months later--and Ric O'Barry, who had been the dolphin trainer for the popular television program Flipper. Lang and O'Barry had been inspired by the June 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, the groundbreaking gathering where Jimi Hendrix, making his US debut, famously set fire to his guitar at the conclusion of his performance. Lang staged the festival at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida, securing the Jimi Hendrix Experience as the headline act for the two-day festival.

The Velvet Underground Singles 1966–69

7 x 7" LIMITED EDITION COLORED VINYL Box Set

Not a Record Store Day release, but a very limited edition colored vinyl pressing!

Box set contains seven (7) 45 rpm 7" vinyl singles, with exact repros of rare VU picture sleeves and labels, liner notes, rare photos, an exclusive Sundazed postcard and more.

Sundazed is proud to release The Velvet Underground Singles 1966–69, a 7 x 7" single box set honoring the legendary New York combo's 7" vinyl output in their rare mono versions. The set features exact reproductions of Velvet Underground singles, two of them with their original picture sleeves. The singles are packaged in a distinctively designed box, along with rare vintage photos and new liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Fricke (who also penned the acclaimed notes for the historic 1995 Velvets CD box set Peel Slowly and See).

The Velvet Underground—whose membership included Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker, Doug Yule and Nico—introduced numerous sonic and thematic innovations that laid much of the groundwork for punk and alternative rock. Although they're now acknowledged as one of the most influential bands in rock history, during their existence the Velvets barely registered on mainstream radar, and were often reviled by mainstream observers as well as hippie-era arbiters of cool. But, as Fricke writes in the new set's liner notes, "Somewhere, in another rock & roll universe, the Velvet Underground are more than a legendary band. They are stars, with hit singles—the original seven-inch masterpieces inside this box."

Although they never came close to scoring a hit, the Velvet Underground was ideally suited to the 7" single format. "The Velvet Underground were a great singles band," David Fricke notes, adding that the Velvets "invented modern rock with searing guitar distortion, throbbing improvisation and brutally realistic tales of life on the wild side. But they did it all in these classic pop songs—compact miracles of raw drive, intimate beauty and Top 40 ecstasy, heard again in the original, thrilling mono single mixes."

The seven singles included in The Velvet Underground Singles 1966–69 comprise the four Velvets singles originally released in the U.S. on the Verve and MGM labels, plus an additional pair of singles that were prepared for release but never made it to the marketplace and a special radio-only promotional single. The singles feature alternate mono versions that differ in significant ways from the songs' better-known stereo album versions. For instance, the band's 1966 debut single "All Tomorrow's Parties" appears here in a special mono edit that amplifies the song's melodic beauty and sonic tension, and a mono mix of their sophomore single "Sunday Morning" emphasizes the song's haunting quality. Meanwhile, the mono single version of "White Light/White Heat" exemplifies the vintage Velvets' stark, distortion-laden fury, while a mono edit of "What Goes On" accentuates that song's inherent pop jangle.

The Velvet Underground Singles 1966–69 also includes two unissued singles, one with a never-released pairing of "White Light/White Heat" backed by "I Heard Her Call My Name," and the other with "Temptation Inside Your Heart" and "Stephanie Says," recorded in the waning days of the band's classic Reed/Cale/Morrison/Tucker lineup and unheard by the public for nearly two decades thereafter. The set's seventh single is a reproduction of a vintage promotional disc, a two-and-a-half minute radio spot promoting the band's eponymous third album and featuring legendary disc jockey Bill "Rosko" Mercer, with excerpts from "I’m Set Free," "What Goes On" and "Beginning to See the Light," as well as a picture sleeve with an un-airbrushed variation on the album's iconic cover art.

By presenting the Velvets as a singles band, The Velvet Underground Singles 1966–69 shows, in David Fricke's words, "rock history the way it should have been: the Velvet Underground as the New York Beatles, guaranteed to blow up your radio and your mind."

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

Various Artists - BBC Radiophonic Music

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, one of the sound effects units of the BBC, was created in 1958 to produce effects and new music for radio. There had been much interest in producing innovative music and sounds to go with the pioneering programming of the era. Often the sounds required for the atmosphere that program makers wished to create were unavailable or non-existent through traditional sources and so some would look to new techniques to produce effects and music for their pieces. Much of this interest drew them to musique concrète and tape manipulation techniques, since using these methods could allow them to create soundscapes suitable for the growing range of unconventional programming.

These two records were recorded in 1968 and 1975 respectively, and have until this day never seen a vinyl release at all! The BBC Radiophonic Workshop would also create the soundtrack for Doctor Who in 1963 and later on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop would document their findings and share these with the public. In this way, they influenced mainstream music. Sound engineer Roger Mayer, who supplied guitar pedals to Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, was influenced by their wiring diagrams. In 1997 the electronic dance music magazine Mixmag described the Workshop as, "the unsung heroes of British electronica." 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Nina Simone - Sings The Blues

Nina Simone Sings The Blues (1967) can rightfully be called a true classic in both Soul and Blues genres. The album is a showcase for the intensity of Nina's soulful croon and demanding piano skills, accompanied by a marvelous backing band with Eric Gale and Rudy Stevenson on guitar, Bob Bushnell on bass, drummer Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie, Ernie Hayes on organ and Buddy Lucas on both harmonica and sax.

With a song selection that ranks among the best Blues tunes ever written, this record goes back to the essence of the Blues – raw and honest spine-shivering melodies. On 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

Dream Theater - Live At Budokan

The 3rd live album of Dream Theater was recorded at the Budokan hall in Japan, in front of an ecstatic crowd. A lot of the material included on Live At Budokan comes from the Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence album.

Highlights on the album include "Instrumedley", where all members successfully showcase their prowess on each of the band's instruments. John Petrucci's riffs are groovy and his solos are (as usual) second to none. James LaBrie's voice just keeps on getting better and John Myung's supple bass lines add wonderful layered harmonies to their Prog Metal masterpieces. On 180 gram audiophile vinyl with insert, gatefold sleeve.  Available on vinyl for the first time!

The Strokes - First Impressions Of Earth

The third album of The Strokes once again proved that their unique sound defined the '00s. A strong set of 14 tracks, each trimmed to the absolute core of The Strokes sound: staccato, Poppy, memorable hooks wrapped around Julian Casablancas's moaning voice.

The opener "You Only Live Once" and the following "Juicebox" have become modern classics overnight. Includes 180 gram audiophile vinyl, printed inner sleeve and 3-panel insert!

Elvis Costello - Mighty Like A Rose

Just like Spike, Mighty Like A Rose (1991) is an album that twists and turns in its stylistic delivery. Costello hired producers Mitchell Froom and Kevin Killen to aurally shape the album's 14 songs into a well sequenced, intricately layered masterpiece.

Highlights of the album are the opening track "The Other Side Of Summer", that made it to a single that performed well on the Rock Charts. "All Grown Up" and "So Like Candy" are examples of the genius and wit of Elvis Costello's songwriting.  On 180 gram audiophile vinyl.
