DEAR JERRY: We are in the process of binge watching Netflix's brilliant series, "Orange Is the New Black."

Near the start of the second season, the inmates have a Valentine's Day party. Softly playing in the background, and mostly drowned out by dialogue, is an old doo-wop style song. What is it?

Unlike most films, TV shows never identify the music used, which explains why people keep asking you for such information. Now it's my turn.

DEAR CARMEN: Apparently, after hearing bits and pieces of "Do What Lovers Do," you did what people do, and with obvious success.

By Earl Lewis and the Channels, one of the 1950s premier doo-wop groups, "Do What Lovers Do" was not recorded until 1991 (Classic Artists 124).

Besides the single, this nifty throwback tune is also available on the 2000 CD album, "The Doo Wop Sound, Volume One" (Varese Sarabande 302 066 174 20).

That specific O.I.N.B. episode, "You Also Have a Pizza," is the sixth in the second season.

In an earlier episode, they really surprised me by playing "Crazy Eyes for You," a Top 40 hit from 1958 by Bobby Hamilton, and his only chart record. Even more shocking is they played it all the way through, as the credits rolled.



DEAR JERRY: When I recently heard the band named Alabama, I realized how few groups I know with the name of a state in their name, such as the New York Dolls.

Can you find one example for all 50 states?

DEAR CLAUDE: No wonder you knew one from the Empire State. Now, just to appear creative, I'll have to make different selections for both Alabama and New York.

With so much information to deal with, we'll have to do this in two parts: A-M and N-Z.

Here is each state with just one artist chosen whose name honors it:

ALABAMA: Alabama State Troopers (Introduced in 1972 with a self-titled LP on Elektra Records)

ALASKA: Alaska Troubadours (Recorded "Banoff Bounce" and "Sourdough Blues" for Royal)

ARIZONA: Arizona (Self-titled RCA Victor LP in 1976)

ARKANSAS: Black Oak Arkansas (Known for their Atco single, "Jim Dandy," a Top 30 hit in 1974)

CALIFORNIA: California Raisins (Only Claymation group on the list. Signature song was "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," from 1988. Surprisingly, they are the only "California ______" [fill in blank] act with a hit record on 45 rpm)

CONNECTICUT: Rudy Vallee and His Connecticut Yankees (Multi-talented superstar with many hits, especially in the 1930s and '40s)

DELAWARE: Delaware Valley U.S.A. West Featuring Ernie Walker (Issued "The Wreck of the Ninety 7" in 1961 on Kay-Y)

FLORIDA: Florida Hurricanes (Waxed "Just Another Day" for Hollywood Records in 1958)

GEORGIA: Georgia Satellites (Homegrown band whose Elektra single, "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," reached No. 2 in 1986)

HAWAII: Frank Ferera's Hawaiians (For the first half of the 20th century, Ferera was the Islands' preeminent guitarist, and the force behind hundreds of Hawaiian recordings.)

IDAHO: Idaho (UK band with the 1996 Caroline single, "Pomegranate Bleeding")

ILLINOIS: Illinois Speed Press (Chicago group whose self-titled debut LP for Columbia hit the charts in 1969)

INDIANA: Boys from Indiana (Among their mid-'70s King Bluegrass tunes is "I Miss My Indiana")

IOWA: Iowa Roxx with the OHS Madrigal Chorus (Hailing from the Hawkeye State, on the Action Sports label, and with "Hawkmania" for a title, make this 1984 single the perfect Iowa choice)

KANSAS: Kansas (This Topeka outfit had over a dozen hits, but are best remembered for their 1978 "Dust in the Wind")

KENTUCKY: Kentucky Headhunters (Award-winning country-rock band that landed in the Top 10 in 1990 with "Oh Lonesome Me," on Mercury)

LOUISIANA: Louisiana Rhythm Kings (New Orleans jazz band par excellence, with 34 terrific tunes from 1928 to 1930. Their 78s are usually in the $200 to $600 range)

MAINE: Maine (Five man Spanish band, now with two albums on Tralla: "Motor Home" [2000] and "A Moment Before" [2003])

MARYLAND: Marylanders with Buddy Lucas and His Band of Tomorrow (West Baltimore quintet that recorded for Jubilee in 1952 and '53, then evolved into the Stylists in 1959)

MASSACHUSETTS: Dick Madison and the Massachusetts Delegation (Artists with Massachusetts in their name are rare. Fortunately, this delegation made a single on Oracle circa-1969: "Give a Damn" backed with "Hey Jude")

MICHIGAN: Prince Arky and the Michigan Playboys (Arky implies from Arkansas, so he crossed the Mississippi River to Tennessee in 1963 to record "My Heart Would Surely Die" for Judd Records, in Memphis. Somewhere along the way, Arky acquired some Michigan Playboys)

MINNESOTA: Minnesota Marv and the Vanguards (These gophers made two singles for Cuca, both in 1961: "Nobody's Darling But Mine" and "Little Boy Blue")

MISSISSIPPI: Mississippi Blacksnakes (Only four 78s are known by this group, all from 1931, all for Brunswick, and none easy to find for under $1,000)

MISSOURI: Missouri (Recorded for Panama and Polydor from 1977 to '79, with singles and albums for both labels)

MONTANA: Patsy Montana and the Prairie Ramblers (Patsy's prime period is 1935 to '45, but her influence on latter day singing cowgirls and yodelers cannot be overstated. Patsy's signature song, "I Wanna Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart," remains one of the most performed songs in western music history)


IZ ZAT SO? There are plenty of choices for areas like New York, California and Texas, but finding artists' names that include these states presented a much greater challenge:

Alaska; Connecticut; Delaware; Idaho; Iowa; Maine; Massachusetts; Missouri; Nebraska; Nevada; New Hampshire; New Mexico; North Dakota; South Dakota; Utah; Vermont; West Virginia; and Wyoming.

This lavish boxset celebrates the 30th anniversary of The The’s major label debut album, Soul Mining, originally released in October, 1983. The re-packed and expanded version contains an authentic reproduction of the album, with newly remastered audio from the original master tapes (overseen at Abbey Road by Matt Johnson), as well as an extra 12” gatefold vinyl of alternative versions and remixes.

The remastered audio has also been dubbed from new vinyl test pressings recorded from Matt Johnson’s original 1982 Thorens TD-147 gramophone player using patent ‘Dubbed-From-Disc’ technology, obtainable via a download code contained within the boxset. The boxset also includes a unique ‘news-poster’ containing extensive notes written by Matt Johnson that detail the making of the album.

Big Brother & the Holding Company MONO Edition LP

Sundazed presents the high-definition vinyl reissue of the ultra-rare mono edition of Big Brother & the Holding Company’s 1967 debut! Besides being the album that introduced the world to Janis Joplin, Big Brother & the Holding Company’s first release stands as one of the classic recordings of ’60s rock. Joplin had added her fiery wail to the archetypal Haight-Ashbury acid-rock quintet only months before it entered the studio to make the album, and for the sessions she shares vocal duties with bassist Peter Albin and guitarist Sam Andrew. But, thanks to the LP’s raging single, “Down on Me,” it was immediately clear to radio audiences of the time that the Texas-born singer was a new force to be reckoned with.

In addition to Joplin’s inimitable blues cry, Big Brother’s other key strength lies in the scraping, distorted guitars of Sam Andrew and James Gurley, which are in heavy abundance on such choice cuts as the trippy “Light is Faster Than Sound,” the punkish “Women is Losers,” and the group’s fuzzy, droning remake of Moondog’s “All is Loneliness.” Cut from the original mono masters, this Sundazed edition adds two scarce single-only sides.

Albert King - Born Under A Bad Sign LP

Along with B.B. and Freddie, Albert King will forever be hailed as one of the original “Three Kings of the Blues Guitar.” Cutting a dynamic 6’ 4” figure on stage while playing his 1958 Gibson Flying V upside down to accommodate his left-handedness (paging Mr. Hendrix!), Albert earned the nickname “The Velvet Bulldozer” due to his forceful yet subtle style. An enormous influence on the British blues scene, Eric Clapton was perhaps King’s most vocal fan, crediting Cream classics like “Strange Brew” as direct extensions of King’s playing. Other axemen falling under his sway were the afore-mentioned Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Mick Taylor, Joe Walsh, Robbie Robertson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. By the late 1960s, King was headlining rock shows around the country and turning on generation of American fans to electric blues.

To record Born Under a Bad Sign, King walked “Lucy,” his well-worn Flying V, down Memphis’ McLemore Avenue and straight into Stax Studios. Once inside, he enlisted the aid of Booker T. and the MGs as well as the Memphis Horns. Talk about a backing band! The combination proved absolutely explosive as the MGs solid groove allowed King to lay down stinging solos with abandon. Though rightly hailed for his guitar prowess, King was also an incredibly soulful singer as he definitively demonstrates throughout the album. Often, he used his guitar as an extension of his voice, answering a vocal line with an equally descriptive lick. Just listen to the back-and-forth of “Laundromat Blues” for a prime example. The album’s title track, which became King’s signature song, also features fiery vocal and guitar interplay. For the “velvet” side of the bulldozer, try King’s tender treatment of the Tin Pan Alley chestnut, “The Very Thought of You.”

Upon release in 1967, Born Under a Bad Sign was hailed as an instant classic. It has since been recognized as one of the all-time great blues albums, with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, placement in Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” and induction into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame’s “Classics of Blues Recordings” among its many accolades. No thorough blues or rock collection is complete without it. Sundazed has sourced this edition directly from the original Stax analog masters to ensure that every lick, every line, every shout is captured. In addition to the album’s eleven original tracks, this Sundazed release adds two King rare mono single sides, “Funk-Shun” and “Overall Junction.” This “bad sign” ain’t nothin’ but good!

MESSENGER - Illusory Blues (grey vinyl)

MESSENGER (UK) is a musical troupe from London formed in the spring of 2012 by Khaled Lowe and Barnaby Maddick. They booked a session with producer Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone Studios that gave birth to their debut album, Illusory Blues: a cosmic ode to the forces of nature and the inevitable cycle of life. To cite musical influences would be futile. The musicians had made their names with bands in scenes as far apart as hardcore punk, black metal, and ambient music. Tonally, one might recall finding oneself in the same "space" occupied by other architects of sound such as Ulver, The Beatles, Swans, or Pink Floyd. But the stream of sound that emanates from the source of Illusory Blues is a heaving mass of organic richness, brimmed with intricate sounds that acknowledge the original fathers of experimentation but look forward in creating something new and unique. They dwell equally in the earthly realm of folk music and in the celestial void of progressive psychedelia, but have chanced upon a sound and an experience that sounds like no other. Rounded off by Daniel Knight and James Leach, the lineup of MESSENGER is now complete, but the journey has just begun.

SUN RA - Cosmos (import reissue LP)

Sun Ra has always been an explorer, venturing out among the cycles and frequencies of the musical cosmos like a wild astronaut, bent on rejoicing and celebrating the wonders of the universe. The extended metaphor of space travel permeates the emotional climate of this masterful recording, as Sun Ras Arkestra reaches out to express the vibrations of the stars as in Interstellar the adventure of travel as in "Moonship" and "Unknown Planet." Sun Ra has always been ahead of his time, musically and spiritually, and has suffered somewhat at the hands of fashionable critics who disdained his attempts at cosmic communications.

The Delmonas - The Delmonas

British garage pop girl group, the Del Monas began life as the Milk-Boilers. If that moniker sounds suspiciously similar to that of the Billy Childish and Mickey Hampsire-led Milkshakes, it’s no co-incidence: The trio got its start by singing backup on the lads’ recordings (and dating the boys in the band). Sarah (who went with Mickey Hampshire), Hilary (with Russ Wilkins), and Louise (with Bruce Brand) took the lead on a rendition of the Beatles’ “Boys” before striking out on their own with a couple of four-song EPs in 1984: Comin’ Home Baby (popularized by Mel Tormé) and Hello, We Love You (actually the Doors’ “Hello, I Love You.”) In both cases, the Milkshakes served as their backing band and Childish and Hampshire wrote most of the originals.

For these EPs, the girls were re-christened the Del Monas (originally two words) by Bruce Brand. The name was inspired by various R&B song titles (eg:The Queen Bees, the Monas) and was finalised as The Del Monas after Bruce saw a record by the Del Capris in a shop window. The following year, the Delmonas released their first full-length recording, Dangerous Charms, which contained a new version of 'Comin' Home Baby', the remaining EP tracks, three outtakes, and five numbers from a radio broadcast (it was later re-released as with additional material from another BBC session from 1988).

Interpersonal tensions resulted in a recording gap of several years and a revamped lineup for 1986′s follow-up, Delmonas 5!.

Billy Childish, Holly Golightly - In Blood

BILLY has been releasing records since 1979, HOLLY has been releasing records since 1990, in 1999 they got together for a collaborative effort which originally came out in the USA on Wabana records.

IN BLOOD is a great album, pretty much ignored in Europe the first time around, it’s subtitled ‘ONE CHORD! ONE SONG! ONE SOUND! But it’s so much more than that, tracks like ‘Demolition Girl’ & ‘Step Out’ roar out of your stereo, really great dirty one chord (with many notes) blues songs with vocal trading, clanging guitars and backed by the Medway Delta Review, which features, Bruce and Johnny of Thee Headcoats as well as Johnny Gibb of the Wildebeests.

While simplicity, repetition and sheer rock & roll minimalism are at the heart of the album, ‘In Blood’ never ceases hold interest. It's just plain addictive.

Lucky number thirteen? Lucky or not, it's a quantity of releases (not even counting VHS/DVD releases and EPs) and a wealth of material beyond which most bands could even imagine. Cannibal Corpse approaches each recording session with a honed and precise vision of a band in their third decade of existence. With this new entry to their extensive catalog, they have switched gears, opting to work with producer Mark Lewis at Audio Hammer Studios, after having tracked their previous three (Kill, Evisceration Plague, Torture) with Erik Rutan. Mark Lewis is a name metal fans have surely heard at this point; he has produced recent albums from The Black Dahlia Murder, DevilDriver, and many more. SOUNDTRACK (OST)- TERMINATOR 2

The score by Brad Fiedel was commercially released as the Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) contained twenty tracks with a run time of 53 minutes. The score spent six weeks on the Billboard 200, reaching a peak of #70.

ALANIS MORISSETTE - SUPPOSED FORMER INFATUATION JUNKIE

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is the fourth album by singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette, originally released in 1998. After the massive success of Jagged Little Pill (1995), Morissette was considered one of the biggest music stars in the world, and many fans anxiously awaited a follow-up album. A dark and wandering album, the mystery of Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie began on its cover, with an image of Alanis’s mouth while laughing and a text printed over that image that refers to The Eight Precepts of Buddhism.

WU-TANG CLAN - THE W (ON CLEAR VINYL)

The W is the third studio album by the world’s baddest Hip Hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Released in 2000, the album debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200, and instantly topped the R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart after release. Containing the hit “Gravel Pit”, the album was certified Platinum a few months later.

After their 1997 album Wu-Tang Forever and several solo projects, 'The W' has a more rugged, less polished sound than most Wu-Tang related albums from that era. Group mastermind RZA produced The W with roughed up Soul samples and tight, tough beats. Paranoid kung fu samples and bizarre sounds drive the fantastic nightmare. The back-to-basics approach (the group’s massive debut Enter The Wu-Tang comes to mind) works so well because it puts the focus back on some of the best rappers in the game.

The album also features guest appearances from Isaac Hayes, Redman, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg.

MAYHEM - GRAND DECLARATION OF WAR 

Grand Declaration of War is the second full-length studio album by Norwegian black metal band Mayhem, released through Necropolis Records, on 16 May 2000.

The album's title and some of the lyrics are taken from the writings of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, particularly Twilight of the Idols and The Antichrist. Nietzsche called Twilight of the Idols "a grand declaration of war"

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS - APOLLO 18

Apollo 18 is the fourth studio album by American alternative rock duo They Might Be Giants. It was released in 1992 through Elektra Records and named after the Apollo missions, the last of which to be completed was Apollo 17. The album was also associated with International Space Year, for which They Might Be Giants were declared the official "musical ambassadors".

The album marked the first conscious effort by John Linnell and John Flansburgh to branch out of their early sound, opting for more traditional rock rhythms and fuller arrangements. The duo adopted a backing band with live drums during the supporting tour. It was their last album recorded as a duo, and the band expanded to include a regular rhythm guitarist, bass player, and saxophone player for their subsequent releases. The album generated three singles, "The Statue Got Me High", "The Guitar (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)" and "I Palindrome I". Apollo 18 also includes the "Fingertips" suite, a series of twenty-one songs, each under thirty seconds long. This concept was later recycled for the band's sixteenth album, Nanobots, which contains twenty-five songs, nine of which run under one minute each.

Barclay James Harvest - North

The album (featuring all new material) draws on the fine musical heritage of Barclay James Harvest whilst bringing the BJH legacy up to date with expansive compositions and thoughtful lyrics. The band’s roots in rural north-west England are explored on the album’s title track, along with another extended piece, ‘On Leave’. The album also includes the recent digital single ‘Unreservedly Yours’ and ‘Ancient Waves’, a song performed live in more recent times.

"North” continues the Barclay James Harvest story and is the strongest work to emerge from the band in many years, a true group effort by John Lees, Craig Fletcher, Jez Smith and Kevin Whitehead. The album release is supported by an extended UK tour by the band in November 2013.

CREAM - ROYAL ALBERT HALL 2005

Iconic Classic Rock heroes Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker teamed up in 2005 for a short string of Cream reunion shows in the UK's finest concert hall, Royal Albert Hall. After their late '60s split, the band had not been playing together, except for a one-off 1993 gig at their induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Cream had not only remained a legendary band, but at the time it seemed extremely unlikely that they would ever play live again. BUDDY MILES - THEM CHANGES

Them Changes is the 1970 release by American Rock and Funk drummer, vocalist, composer and producer Buddy Miles. He was a founding member of The Electric Flag (1967), a member of Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys (1969-1970), founder and leader of the Buddy Miles Express and later, the Buddy Miles Band. In addition to Jimi Hendrix, Miles played and recorded with Carlos Santana, Mike Bloomfield and others.

According to critics Them Changes is one of the great lost treasures of Soul inspired Rock music. The album stayed on the charts for more than a year and the title track became Miles' signature song. With this album Miles not only proved himself to be a great interpreter of songs of others, but also demonstrated his ability to write solid material on his own.

MFSB - LOVE IS THE MESSAGE

Love Is The Message (1975) is the second album released by Philadelphia International Records house band MFSB, and widely regarded as one of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's shining moments. The album serves as a landmark LP for Philadelphia's mid-'70s Soul movement. The album hit the 4th spot in the Billboard Album Top 200, and topped the  Billboard Top Soul LPs Charts for quite some time.

This Grammy Award winning album includes the number one hit "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" featuring The Three Degrees. The song became the theme song for the immensely popular television show Soul Train, the dance show that still defines the Disco era. The song "Love Is The Message" would go on to be an enormous underground hit in New York's late-'70s disco scene, championed by influential DJs such as Larry Levan. In addition, the album also features the orchestra's take on "Touch Me In The Morning", a song popularized by Diana Ross that was another proto-disco classic.

FOUR TOPS - FOUR TOPS

The Four Tops were among a number of groups, including The Miracles, The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Temptations, and The Supremes, who established the Motown Sound around the world during the 1960s. The group was the main male vocal group for the highly successful songwriting and production team of Holland–Dozier–Holland, who crafted a stream of hit singles on Motown. Their immaculate four-part harmonies gave voice to many of Motown's most enduring songs.

Their self-titled album (1964) included the singles "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "Ask the Lonely". You'd be hard pressed to find two better singles on a debut album, both being the cornerstones of Four Tops. A debut to remember.  On 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Relapse Records is proud to present a deluxe reissue of MASTODON's seminal debut LP Remission, a record that would immediately establish them as one of the most important bands in the history of heavy music.  Exploding onto the scene in 2002, MASTODON combined an unparalleled level of musicianship together with songwriting sophistication that simply did not exist amongst their peers.  Over a decade after its release Remission remains one of the most important titles in Relapse’s rich catalog, and it is with that appreciation that the label is proud to present a super-deluxe version of this classic record put together with the full cooperation of the band themselves.

DEAR JERRY: You once identified a mystery song that someone heard on AMC's Mad Men. It turned out to be "Ladder of Success" by Skeeter Davis.

Seeing how you solved that case gives me hope that you will answer my question.

When Skeeter and Betty Davis started out as the Davis Sisters, their first record, "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," went to No. 1, which is quite an accomplishment.

Inexplicably, they never had another popular record and are forever known as a One Hit Wonder.

Just how many follow-up records were released by them, if any? Are there any I might even know?

DEAR AMANDA: Inexplicable on the surface, perhaps, but there is an explanation.

Not everyone knew it at the time, but Skeeter (nee: Mary Frances Penick) was the only one of the Davis Sisters not named Davis. She and Betty Jack "B.J." Davis were best of friends from high school, and Mary Frances even lived with the Davis family for a while.

Tragically, early Sunday morning Aug. 2, 1953, two weeks before "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know" made its Billboard chart debut, B.J. was killed when the car in which she and Skeeter were in was hit head-on by a fellow who fell asleep at the wheel. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Skeeter was taken to the hospital with body bruises and superficial cuts, but had no critical injuries as is sometimes reported.

She remained hospitalized for two days just for observation, then was released on Aug. 4th.

The memorial service for Betty, Aug. 6th in Covington, Ky., was said to have drawn the largest crowd ever seen at a funeral in that Ohio River community. Sadly, B.J. was denied the thrill of seeing herself and her best friend having the top-selling country record in the nation.

Having a smash hit made it imperative that the Davis Sisters continue recording, so Betty's older sister, Georgia, filled in as Skeeter's new "sister."

Alas, the magical harmonies perfected by Skeeter and B.J. could not be duplicated. But oh how they tried, again and again.

Over three years, from the summer of 1953 to mid-'56, RCA Victor cranked out a dozen singles, meaning 24 songs, by the Davis Sisters.

Of all those tunes, it is very likely that the only ones well known are "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," and, to a lesser extent the flip side, "Rock-A-Bye Boogie" (RCA 5345).

Though this was their first record for RCA, the girls did make a few recordings for the Fortune label, and while those tracks were not hits they were very instrumental in getting them signed by RCA.

Being held to One Hit Wonder status was not for lack of trying on the part of the girls or RCA. The company issued the following 11 singles consecutively on 45 and 78 rpm, but not a one them clicked with the C&W dee jays:

Two years after the Davis Sisters called it quits, Skeeter embarked on a hugely successful solo career.

She did indeed climb the "Ladder of Success."

On Sept. 19, 2004, at the age of 72, Mary Frances Penick died as a result of breast cancer.


IZ ZAT SO? Here is one remarkable sidebar to "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know" reaching No. 1.

From the January 1944 inception of charting country music singles, to August 1984, and "Mama He's Crazy" by the Judds, the Davis Sisters are the only all-female unit, consisting of two or more members, to top the C&W charts.

That's over 40 years in what was then a male dominated genre.

Compare that to these 17 all-female acts who topped the Pop and Rock charts during the exact same time period (number in parenthesis indicates multiple No. 1 hits):

Andrews Sisters (3); Angels; Chiffons; Chordettes; Crystals; Dixie Cups; Emotions; Fontane Sisters; Honey Cone; LaBelle; Marvelettes; McGuire Sisters (2); Shangri-las; Shirelles (2); Silver Convention; Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer; and Supremes (with Diana Ross) (12).
