Music History - March 1st

highlights:

On March 1, 1967, working at Abbey Road studios, London, the Beatles started recording a new John Lennon song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Lennon's son, Julian, inspired the song with a nursery school drawing he called "Lucy — in the sky with diamonds." The picture, which was of a little girl with lots of stars, was his classmate - Lucy O’Donnell, who also lived in Weybridge, and attended the same school as Julian. Shortly after the song's release, speculation arose that the first letter of each of the title's nouns intentionally spelled LSD. Although Lennon denied this, the BBC banned the song. In a 2004 interview, Paul McCartney said that the song is about LSD, stating, "A song like 'Got to Get You Into My Life,' that's directly about pot, although everyone missed it at the time." "Day Tripper," he says, "that's one about acid. 'Lucy in the Sky,' that's pretty obvious. There's others that make subtle hints about drugs, but, you know, it's easy to overestimate the influence of drugs on the Beatles' music.

On March 1, 1973, Pink Floyd released their eighth studio album, 'The Dark Side of the Moon.'  The LP was an immediate success, topping the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for one week. It subsequently remained in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988, longer than any other album in history. With an estimated 50 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd's most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It has twice been remastered and re-released, and has been covered in its entirety by several other acts. It spawned two singles, "Money" and "Time." In addition to its commercial success, 'The Dark Side of the Moon' is one of Pink Floyd's most popular albums among fans and critics, and is frequently ranked as one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

from our friends at Relapse

RINGWORM:  Sign To Relapse Records

Announce US Tour Dates

Relapse Records is extremely excited to announce the signing of Cleveland, OH metal/hardcore veterans Ringworm!  Formed in 1990, Ringworm (Human Furnace - Vocals, Matt Sorg - Guitar, John Comprix - Guitar, Ed Stephens - Bass, Danny Zink - Drums) has previously released six full-length records on labels Deathwish, A389 and Victory Records in addition to playing countless shows with the likes of Cro-Mags, Integrity, Kreator, Goatwhore, Nasum, and many others.  The band will be entering the studio to record their Relapse debut this April.  Vocalist Human Furnace commented on the signing:

"Throughout our existence I've felt that RINGWORM has always been the "black sheep", never quite fitting into any specific genre mold. Sometimes too metal for hardcore, other times too hardcore for metal. We enjoy distorting the line between the two and, often, completely destroying it. But I've always felt that we've never quite had a home that understood where we're coming from and embraced the fact what we are a "black sheep" and we aren't cookie-cut bullshit. We feel that we finally found that home. They understand that there are legions of black sheep out there that don't fit into society's "one size fits all" mold.  We couldn't be more excited to be more working with Relapse."

SHARKMUFFIN

Release Debut 7-inch “The Lake” TODAY!

“Frontwoman Tarra Thiessen, who’s vocal performance on the track is A+, reminds a bit (in a very good way) of Chrissie Hynde.” -Blah Blah Blah Science

Dive Into Sharkmuffin's "The Lake" at Soundcloud

March 1, 2013 – The moment you have been waiting for is finally here! TODAY, Brooklyn outfit and newly claimed buzz band, SHARKMUFFIN have just released their debut 7” The Lake / Big.

Gaining accolades throughout the online music world, singer/guitarist Tarra Thiessen has been creating quite a frenzy with her vocals, being compared frequently to the likes of Chrissie Hynde and referred to as “Indie Rock's next great front woman.”

The standout single, “The Lake” is a living eulogy to a best friend lost in a sea of addiction. Thiessen grapples with her emotional disconnect by turning the tragic experience of her best friend's addiction into a triumphant tune that echoes love and loss.

Channeling the brilliant Riot Grrrl acts of years passed, such as Sleater-Kinney, Sharkmuffin has put a new twist on the genre, creating a boisterous sound that is truly their own deemed “Dirty Garage Pop.”

The combination of singer/guitarist Tarra Thiessen, alongside bassist Natalie Kirch with Drew Adler on drums, is deadly. Thiessen delivers gutsy vocals that will send shivers down your very spine. Jumping between gentle moans to rough, forceful screams, her vocals are sweetly complimented by Kirch's lighter, dreamier melodies which make you expect the unexpected. These Brooklynite-Punk-Rock-Debutants are smart, sassy and sexy....be on the lookout.

find this to be intriguing, will have to learn more and get back to you:

Out of Press Vinyl Pledge Site Beat Delete Launched by Ninja Tune

Launched at the start of 2013, Beat Delete is a specialised Kickstarter, a website which allows fans to potentially rescue lost vinyl releases.

Customers can pledge to buy a copy of a record currently out of stock by the label. When a certain level of pledges have been made, the record will be re-pressed and once again will become available to the wider world. In many cases, pledgers will receive numbered or exclusive limited editions, or other benefits outlined for each release.

Developed from an idea by a Ninja Tune employee and “powered” by the same label, the 2013 launch of Beat Delete responds to the lasting impact of the fire at the Sony-DADC warehouse in Edmonton during the summer 2011 riots which destroyed 3.2m releases. For independent labels, the cost of re-pressing the small releases that make up the bulk of their catalogue is hard to justify. According to the Beat Delete press release:

"It’s easy enough to put in an order of 1000 copies of something you know will sell through in a matter of weeks, but what about that record that may take several years to recoup the investment? That means warehousing costs on top of expensive shipping and manufacture, and many labels can’t afford to take that risk. As a result, we’re all – as music buyers – impoverished. There is less choice, less chance of coming across a little gem, less excitement. This is particularly true of vinyl, where the costs of re-pressing small quantities of a record are prohibitively high."

Since the beta launch of the site at the start of the year there have been steady orders. King Geedorah's - Take Me To Your Leader on Big Dada has been fully funded, Amon Tobin's Permutation and Bricolage LPs are both 80% complete, while Bonobo, Hexstatic, Roots Manuva and more are waiting for your support...

Beat Delete is already supported by the following labels: Accidental, Ninja Tune, Beggars, Big Dada, Brainfeeder, Cat Skills, Domino, Sunday Best, Tru Thoughts.

Beat Delete will be looking to consistently add new record labels and releases to the site. Any labels large or small who would like make available out of press products to the Beat Delete community please contact info@beatdelete.com

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 25, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Having recently watched "Brigadoon" on television, I was a surprised to not hear "Come to Me, Bend with Me." I figured it probably was one of those segments that gets dropped or edited when they modify movies for TV.

However, because it's my favorite "Brigadoon" song, I ordered the original, full-length, theatrical version from Netflix.

Still, there was no "Come to Me, Bend with Me."

Now I'm really confused. Am I mistaken about this song being in "Brigadoon"?
—Norman R. Stewart, Brown Deer, Wis.

DEAR NORMAN: Yes and no.

In case you are even more confused now, here is the expository explanation.

Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's "Brigadoon," a mythical Shangri-la-like village in the Highlands of Scotland, opened on Broadway March 13, 1947, at the Ziegfeld Theatre.

Sandwiched between "The Heather on the Hill" and "Almost Like Being in Love," was "Come to Me, Bend with Me," performed by Lee Sullivan.

The LP had not yet been invented, so, in what would be RCA Victor's first ever original cast album, there were five 78 rpm singles (RCA Victor K-7). In 1951 the "Brigadoon" original cast appeared for the first time on long-playing vinyl records (RCA Victor LOC-1001), and the first track on Side 2 is "Come to Me, Bend with Me."

After many years out of print, RCA Victor repackaged the original cast in 1981 (AYL1-3901).

All of RCA's original cast records include Pamela Britton's "My Mother's Wedding Day," an accounting of a wedding that turned into a drunken brawl spiced up with an alcohol-fueled tryst.

Considered a bit too rowdy at the time, "My Mother's Wedding Day" was not chosen for use in the upcoming (1954) MGM film soundtrack.

Stronger objections were made to "The Love of My Life," thus it did not appear on record until 1958, when the censors began to loosen their grip on pop culture.

"Brigadoon" became Lerner and Loewe's first truly successful musical, but Lerner alone wrote the screenplay, which he completed in 1953. Late that year, MGM began the recording sessions for the music to be heard in the film, including "Come to Me, Bend with Me," voiced by John Gustafsen.

At the time, the plan was to have Jimmy Thompson, the actor cast as Charlie Dalrymple, lip-sync to Gustafsen's audio track.

The film, starring Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, and Van Johnson, premiered in 1954.

Unfortunately, the "Come to Me, Bend with Me" and "There But for You Go I" sequences remained on the cutting room floor. Silly as it seems by modern standards, "My Mother's Wedding Day" and "The Love of My Life" were summarily scratched.

After these cuts, MGM was left with just enough film music to fill about one-half of the soundtrack album. But by reinstating "Come to Me, Bend with Me" (John Gustafsen) and "There But for You Go I" (Gene Kelly), plus some incidental music by the MGM Studio Orchestra, they beefed up the running time to nearly 30 minutes.

Inexplicably, the front cover and record label both state: "Recorded Directly from the Sound Track of the M-G-M CinemaScope Film." This is false, since roughly half of this LP (MGM E-3135) is material that is neither in the film nor on the sound track.

MCA reissued this MGM soundtrack in 1986 (MCA-39062), providing you with one more source for "Come to Me, Bend with Me."

Finally, in 1958, a "Brigadoon" studio cast came out with "My Mother's Wedding Day" and "The Love of My Life," both brilliantly performed by Susan Johnson. Also headlining this cast are Shirley Jones, Jack Cassidy, and Frank Porretta.

Except for the 1958 "Brigadoon" (Columbia CL-1132) — widely regarded as the most desirable collection — all of the above records, plus several others not discussed here, are easily available on compact discs for less than $10.

IZ ZAT SO? So what is it about "The Love of My Life," a truly marvelous song, that spooked the producers for so many years?

What we have here is a 16-year-old Scottish lass, whose father encourages her to "audition" several candidates in search for a husband.

One by one, her outdoor overnight rendezvous in the glen end badly. Not once does she find the love of her life. Ever the optimist, before spending the night with each lad, she is convinced he is the real love of her life.

For all we know, she may still be conducting interviews.

To give you an idea, here's the official summary of applicant number one:

At sixteen years I was blue and sad
Then father said I should find a lad
So I set out to become a wife
And found the real love of my life

His name it was Chris, and the last was McGill
I met him one night pickin' flowers on the hill
He had lots of charm and a certain kind of touch
And a certain kind of eagerness that pleased me very much
So there neath the moon where romance often springs
I gave him my heart … and a few other things
I don't know how long that I stayed up on the hill
But the moon had disappeared, and so had Christopher McGill

So I went home and I thought I'd die
Till father said, make another try
So out I went to become a wife
And found the real love of my life

some great new vinyl from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

Original Soundtrack - West Of Memphis: Voices For Justice

In 1993 the world was startled by the horror story of the murder of three 8-year old boys near Memphis, Tennessee. Three local teenagers were arrested and given life sentences, one of them was to be executed. Then in 2011, after a tireless campaign involving rock stars, movie actors and supporters from the public the three were released. These famous people all contributed to create awareness and prove the innocence of the three convicted men.

Famed movie director Peter Jackson decided to shoot a documentary on the subject, called West Of Memphis: Voices For Justice. Amongst others, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Patti Smith used their songs for various benefit activities for the case. Johnny Depp's version of Little Lion Man, as well as all the other songs on the soundtrack, played an important role in the life of prime suspect Damien Echols whose innocence was proven in 2011. After eighteen years in prison he declared: "Music has always played a huge role in my life. In my early years it allowed me to escape the crushing poverty I was born into. Then, when I was put on trial, it was music they used against me. My love of heavy metal was considered 'proof' that I was evil and a satanic murderer. And then, ultimately, it was music that helped to free me" said Damien Echols.
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • Including tracks from Nick Cave, Johnny Depp, Marilyn Manson, Eddie Vedder, Bob Dylan and Patti Smith
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Gun Club - The Las Vegas Story + Live LP

The Gun Club was formed by Jeffrey Lee Pierce, former head of the Blondie fan club in Los Angeles. By 1982, the band had signed to Blondie guitarist Chris Stein's Animal Records and temporarily relocated to New York to record their first major label album Miami (MOVLP630).

Following its success, the band recorded The Las Vegas Story (1984) which proved to be their most visionary and coherent record to date. Sonically, the band delivers heavy desert Rock, coloured by earthy slide guitars and primal rhythms – a unique blend of New Wave, Garage and Mod with a post-punk attitude. The Las Vegas Story benefited from an impeccable production, culminating in album highlights "Walkin' With The Beast", "Eternally Is Here" and "Give Up The Sum".

As a special bonus the first 1.000 copies of this record contain a live bonus LP. Don't miss out on this one!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Printed innersleeves
  • First 1000 copies will have a BONUS live album

Godflesh - Hymns

Hailing from Black Sabbath's stomping grounds of Birmingham, England, Godflesh are sometimes respectfully labeled as Sabbath's younger sibling. On their seventh and final studio album Hymns (2001), the undisputed leaders of British industrial metal return to a lean line up of guitar, bass and a human drummer. Adding more variety to the mix, guitarist and band leader Justin Broadrick occasionally sings without a distorted grunt on a number of songs. This doesn't mean the band have lightened up or lost their brutal, pessimistic  outlook. Their authentic sound still presents you with angst, coldness and a mechanical feel, and overall the band sounds in better shape than ever. Too bad it proved to be their last effort. Highlights of this album are the incredibly emotional "Anthem", the deep and slow "Defeated" and "Paralyzed". Hymns is finally available on vinyl for the first time with remastered audio and an exclusive bonus track!

Be quick, because first 1.000 copies are pressed on yellow/orange vinyl!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • First time on vinyl !
  • Remastered audio
  • Bonus track ("If I Could Only Be What You Want")
  • First 1.000 copies are pressed on yellow/orange vinyl

Run-DMC - King Of Rock

Before Run DMC's collaboration with Aerosmith "Walk This Way" (1986) smashed the hit charts and proved to the mainstream that Rock and Hip Hop are mere sides of the same coin, the seminal Hip Hop group already introduced both styles to each other on their second album King Of Rock (1985). This groundbreaking record was the first Hip Hop album to go platinum. As its title implies, the dynamic trio claim their supremacy by combining heavy 808 beats and massive guitar riff samples, proving they were the baddest group on the block, period. Their sound influenced late eighties Hip Hop on the whole, most notoriously by their label mates the Beastie Boys. King Of Rock's influence is phenomenal. Not only did it introduce Rock fans to a new music, its fresh sounds also made all Hip Hop that came before it sound dated. This 1985 record is a trailblazing album to the umpteenth degree!
  •  180 gram audiophile vinyl

Tim Buckley - Goodbye & Hello

Viewed by many as one of his best albums, Goodbye And Hello followed up on his crucial debut album Tim Buckley [MOVLP676] in 1967. There are quite some Sergeant Pepper-esque experimental influences to be found on Goodbye And Hello, making this a highly varied album with much to offer for Buckley fans. Outstanding tracks include "No Man Can Find The War", the title track and "I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain". Classic must-have album!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • His second album from 1967

The Residents - The Third Reich N Roll (red vinyl)

Funny, innovative, challenging and bonkers to a fault, The Residents' second album comprised a remarkable reinvention of a host of Rock and Pop standards.

Beating well-known melodies into Residents defined shapes, the album posited the theory that America's youth were being lulled into political inaction by the fake rebellion offered by Pop culture. The costumed Avant-Garde mavericks were here to save them with music unlike any heard before.

Available as a very limited numbered red vinyl edition in a gatefold cover.

Tracks
1. Swastikas on Parade (17:30)
2. Hitler Was A Vegetarian (18.27)

Neptune Towers - Caravans to Empire Algol (vinyl preorder)

Neptune Towers' rare 1994 debut of Ambient Soundscapes.

Bleak and evocatively atmospheric, Neptune Towers was the brainchild of Darkthrone's Fenriz and took its inspiration from the likes of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Kraftwerk.

This edition of Caravans To Empire Algol contains liner notes by Fenriz and is presented on 180gm black vinyl.

Pre-order now for 29th April release.
