Vinyl Review - The Turtles 45 RPM Vinyl Singles Collection

When remembering the 1960's one things comes to mind; the music.  From the advent of the British Invasion to the psychedelic musings of many bands and the sensible pop songs being crafted, it's no wonder that the music lives on.

And live on it does.  Recently, I was sent the 8 record 45 rpm set from The Turtles to review (The Turtles 45 RPM Vinyl Singles Collection was released September 16, 2014).  Housed in a neat and study box, are eight of the band's most recognized cuts and some that you may have heard but a few times.  Manufactured and distributed by Manifesto Records and on the FloEdCo label, these songs not only bring back pleasant memories, but also a time when getting on radio's top forty meant something.

The Turtles were a mixture of pop, bubble gum, cascading melodies and straight up rock and roll. Their influences are clearly heard with every cut, from the jangly guitars and folk-pop sounds of the Byrds, the soaring harmonies of the Mamas and the Papas, the Brit pop sound of the Dave Clark Five, the quirkiness of the Lovin' Spoonful, the hook driven sound of the Kinks (in fact, Ray Davies produced a couple of the cuts ("You Don't Have To Walk In The Rain and "Love In The City"), the folk sound of Bob Dylan and even some of the hazy sweetness of Tommy James and the Shondells.

Their superb cover version of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" in 1965 started it all and in between (from 1965 and 1970) the band placed seventeen songs on the Billboard Top 100.  Included in the set is the 1968 inventive and pure harmonic balance of their #6 hit "Elenore," the cowbell-driven 1967 #3 hit "She'd Rather Be With Me," the bubble gum pop of "You Baby" (#20 in 1966) and a cover of an early Byrds release 1969's #6 hit "You Showed Me." The top cut in the set is the instantly recognizable sound and the soaring harmonies and the band's pinnacle of success 1967's "Happy Together," which was the group's only number one record.  The song actually knocked the Beatles' "Penny Lane" out of the number one slot for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. What's amazing is that the song had been rejected a dozen times before it was offered to the Turtles.

But I think one of the most endearing qualities of the boxed set is that you sit and change the records.  With most clocking in at about the three minute mark, the set forces you (in a good way) to actually sit down and enjoy the music (after all, you do have to flip the 45's over and replace them with the others).  I must admit that giving the time length of some of the cuts, they really didn't have the time to fully develop (case in point 1966's psychedelic cut "Grim Reaper Of Love").

The band broke up in 1970, with founders Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman joining Frank Zappa's The Mothers of Invention before touring on their own again as Flo & Eddie. and in between many sessions as recording artists and radio programmers; they still tour today as The Turtles.

Overall, if you like 60's music, this boxed set is full of sweet ear candy, full of all the elements that made the 60's sound pleasurable to listen to.  The Turtle's boxed set is full of catchy choruses, inter-woven harmonies, addictive pop hooks and is an intoxicating palette of songs that must be heard in their entirety.  Highly recommended by the CVR blog as a collectible and an extraordinary box set of 60's music!

Austin, TX—September 16, 2014-- Mondo is thrilled to announce a spectacular lineup of new vinyl releases and music-related events at MondoCon, a convention to celebrate the creators behind art, film, music and collectibles. The newly announced vinyl for the original score from Shaun of the Dead will be available for the first time in any format to celebrate the rom-zom-com’s 10th anniversary with artwork by Jock. MondoCon takes place in Austin, TX on September 20 and 21 at The Marchesa Hall & Theater.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD

Edgar Wright's rom-zom-com turns 10 years old this year, and Mondo is proud to celebrate this important milestone with the complete score for Shaun of the Dead - never before released in ANY format - on 180 Gram Vinyl.

While aware that they were working on a comedy, Daniel Mudford & Pete Woodhead had the idea of making a score that was deadly serious and to let the comedy do its own thing. "We wanted to ‘play a straight bat,’as the English say, and treat the film as though it was a sincere and genuinely terrifying scenario." says Mudford. In doing so, they crafted a score that fits in perfectly alongside the great horror scores that inspired it.

Dan and Pete’s band 'The Sons Of Silence,' was previously featured in Edgar Wright's television show Spaced and became part of the behind-the-scenes soundtrack during the writing and casting portions of the film. "Indeed, many of the doomier, dubbier tracks of from ‘The Sons of Silence’would blend in perfectly with my playlist, made up of John Carpenter scores, Goblin rock outs and library tracks from Dawn of The Dead. So even before Dan and Pete were definitely scoring the movie, they were already scoring the movie," says Wright.

MUSIC FOR 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

Stanley Kubrick's seminal masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey is known for its classical musical cues as much as it is for its vivid imagery. What few people realize is that the cues that are now forever associated with the film were a last minute revision on the part of Kubrick. There is an original score, composed for the film by the late Alex North (Spartacus, A Streetcar Named Desire) that was abandoned during post-production. North did not discover this until the film's premiere screening.

Working with North's estate, Mondo will release this lost original score on vinyl for the first time ever. The package design by Jay Shaw, features a glossy Monolithic black, tip-on gatefold, with a holographic foil Interior gatefold, housed in a custom clear plastic slipcase.

At MondoCon, composer and writer Brian Satterwhite will host a panel on the subject, featuring a live presentation of several iconic scenes with the lost score meticulously reintegrated into the film to show a select audience what could have been.

Original Score by Alex North
Package design by Jay Shaw
Pressed on 180 Gram Black Vinyl and randomly inserted Beyond The Infinite Vinyl. Featuring liner notes by Jon Burlingame. Limited one-time pressing of 2001 copies.

Music For 2001: A Space Odyssey will be available for sale at MondoCon and online November 2014.

LOOPER

Nathan Johnson's incredible score for Rian Johnson's time-travel masterpiece is coming to vinyl for the first time. Composed using found sounds in New Orleans where the film was produced, Johnson crafted a suspenseful, innovative soundtrack to complement the dystopian landscape where time travel and murder are controlled by organized crime.

In a stunning packaging concept by Jay Shaw, this 2XLP album comes in an embossed, gold foil gatefold jacket, housed in a custom, hand-embellished canvas bag. With the help of local effects shop Hawgfly Productions, Mondo lovingly crafted a truly one-of-a-kind package befitting this modern sci-fi classic.

A bonus 7-inch record will be available for purchase in limited quantities as a companion piece for true collectors: featuring the track 'Slinky Dance' by Kid Koala, released in full for the first time ever, along with a B-Side piano version of the 'Theme From Looper' performed by Nathan Johnson himself.

Score composed and produced by Nathan Johnson
Package design by Jay Shaw
Pressed on 180 Gram Black Vinyl, accompanied by a limited bonus 7" inch record featuring never before released material by Kid Koala. Cut at 45RPM for best possible sound quality. Housed in a hand-embellished Canvas bag. Featuring Liner Notes by Nathan Johnson.

The Looper vinyl will be available for sale at MondoCon and online September 23, 2014.

ALANNA ROYALE RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM ACHILLES

Yesterday, Alanna Royale release their debut album, ACHILLES. Sample a taste of the band’s new album with their first single “Animal” which premiered exclusively through American Songwriter.

Alanna Royale combines the best elements of rock, pop, funk and soul, all executed by their fearless leader and sensual vocalist, Alanna Quinn-Broadus, an unparalleled rhythm section – Jared Colby on guitar, Gabriel Golden on bass and Matt Snow on drums - and a tremendously talented two-piece horn section – Kirk Donovan on trumpet and Diego Vasquez on trombone.

The band’s vivacious and soulful live shows have catapulted Alanna Royale onto the music scene. And now, thanks to their impressive fanbase and reputation, Alanna Royale’s, ACHILLES, is posed to skyrocket them to superstardom.

Without a single recorded song, Alanna Royale was able to obtain an impressive fanbase and a reputation solely because of their unforgettable live performances.  In January of 2013, the band released its debut EP, Bless Her Heart, which led to sold-out shows across Nashville and prompted Mike Grimes, owner of the world famous Grimey’s to declare them, “the next big thing.”

Alanna Royale shines bright by marrying smooth, retro roots with dirty Rock n’ Roll attitude. Since the release of Bless Her Heart, the band has shared the stage with some of Nashville’s finest, and made appearances at Bonaroo, Austin City Limits, East Nashville Underground and Music City Roots. They’ve been featured in Garden & Gun and Nashville Lifestyles and on NPR.

Proving to be unstoppable, Alanna Royale has just put the finishing touches its full-length debut, ACHILLES.  Recorded at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, the album was engineered and produced by Andric Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff), and features a revolving door of local talent including members of Los Colognes, Fly Golden Eagle and Lynyrd Skynyrd.  “We were pushed to the boundaries,” shares Quinn-Broadus, “and we came out on the other end with an amazing record.

Melted Toys LP Available On Vinyl

Culminating three years after their acclaimed Washed & Dried EP first unveiled the group's distinct blend of hazy, plaintive pop and psychedelic electronica, the full-length reigns in squarely as the group's most definitive vision yet. It comes on as a sort of sanctuary-in-transit, inspired both by the shifting visions of dreams and global travel, so that each of the twelve passages flicker and flame with equal impression.
