Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SoundStageDirect

Sonic Highways (On Sale) by Foo Fighters

Though not a soundtrack album by any stretch, Sonic Highways shares its title with the Dave Grohl-directed eight-episode HBO series described by Grohl as a love letter to the history of American music and premiering Friday, October 17 at 11 p.m.. For the album and series, Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear wrote and recorded one song in each of these eight cities, delving into the local musical currents: how each region shaped these musicians in their formative years, and in turn the impact those people had on the cultural fabric of their hometowns. All songs feature local legends sitting in, with every lyric written in an unprecedented experimental style: Dave held off on putting down words until the last day of each session, so as to be inspired by the experiences, interviews for the HBO series, and other local personalities who became part of the process.

This album is instantly recognizable as a Foo Fighters record, but there's something deeper and more musical to it. I think that these cities and these people influenced us to stretch out and explore new territory, without losing our ‘sound'."—Dave Grohl

CCR: The Complete Studio Albums by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Undeniably one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Creedence Clearwater Revival has sold over 50 million albums worldwide since their formation in the 1960s, with their songs on consistent rotation on Classic Rock radio. The Complete Studio Albums (7-LP Box Set) brings together the legendary band’s entire studio output in one comprehensive collection, all on 180-gram vinyl. The collection features all of the band’s instantly recognizable hits, including “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Fortunate Son,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door,” “Travelin’ Band,” and “Down on the Corner."

Although their music evoked the raw, gospel-tinged sound of the rural South, Doug Clifford, Stu Cook, and Tom and John Fogerty actually hailed from El Cerrito, CA, where, in junior high school, the boys formed a band called The Blue Velvets. By the end of 1964, the band had signed with Fantasy Records, under the name The Golliwogs. The young band resolutely played local clubs and released a half-dozen garage rock flavored singles, before renaming themselves Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1967. Just a few months later, the quartet released their eponymous debut under the new moniker.

Though the 1968 release of Creedence Clearwater Revival paralleled the flowering of the San Francisco music scene, the band had little in common with the "San Francisco Sound." On the contrary, the LP contained rock standards such as Dale Hawkins's "Susie Q" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell on You,"(both of which became immediate hits) as well as original material by John Fogerty, who was to emerge as one of rock's most influential songwriters.

1969 was an epic year in the too-short history of Creedence Clearwater Revival. In that year alone, the band released three Top Ten albums (Bayou Country, Green River and Willy and the Poor Boys), scoring four hit singles and three charting B-sides. In addition to the incredible quantity and quality of their releases, the band also played the Woodstock festival, performed on the Ed Sullivan show twice and toured throughout North America. Coming off the momentum of the previous year, 1970 proved to be just as productive—if not more—for the band. Cosmo's Factory, cited in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, came out that July, and included the hits "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Lookin' Out My Back Door" and an 11- minute rendition of Marvin Gaye’s hit "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." By the time of Pendulum's release later that year, Creedence was the top-selling rock band in the world, coming off seven consecutive Top 10 hits.

In 1971, Tom Fogerty left the band to pursue a solo career, while the remaining members went on to record Mardi Gras, their final studio album, released in 1972. Though the band members went their separate ways so early into their careers, CCR’s music remains as popular as ever, garnering new fans from every generation.

This box set is a must-have for Creedence Clearwater Revival fans and vinyl collectors alike.

Grateful Dead 'Two From The Vault' Available December 9, 2014

Following on the heels of Light In The Attic’s vinyl LP release of One From The Vault comes the next in the trilogy of From The Vault releases by the Grateful Dead. These releases are distinguished from the more abundant Dick’s Picks series in that Dick’s Picks are “direct from the soundboard” recordings, while the From The Vault series were professionally recorded on multi-track tape and then mixed down (decades) later for release.

Recorded live at the Shrine Auditorium (Los Angeles) in 1968, this is the worldwide vinyl debut release of this legendary show featuring the 6 piece line-up of Pigpen, Garcia, Weir, Lesh, Kruetzmann, & Hart, freshly remastered in 2014 by Joe Gastwirt for maximum mind expansion. 9 dynamic songs on 8 sides of wax, this show has previously only been available on CD; this is the first ever vinyl LP release!

5 songs weigh in around the 15-minute mark, while 3 others touch down close to 10 minutes–this is the Dead at their most improvisational while still retaining the Blues-Rock roots of the “Pigpen” years.

•First time ever on vinyl
•Newly re-mastered by Joe Gastwirt
•4xLPs housed in a gatefold Stoughton “tip-on” M-Pack jacket
•Lacquers cut by Kevin Gray

Lizard In A Woman’s Skin Available From DeathWaltz

It is a proud day for Death Waltz Recording Company as we prepare to release a score by one of the biggest composers in film music history. Ennio Morricone (ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, CINEMA PARADISO, ORCA: KILLER WHALE) has produced masterpiece after masterpiece, but none so creatively unsettling as his score to the 1971 Lucio Fulci giallo A LIZARD IN A WOMAN’S SKIN (aka UNA LUCERTOLA CON LA PELLE DI DONNA). Like many of Fulci’s movies, LIZARD blurs the line between dreams and reality, with hedonistic nightmares featuring narcotic-fuelled orgies leading to real murder that may or may not have been committed during one of the dreams.

Morricone’s music is as unhinged as the film itself, mixing post-sixties funk and jazz with increasingly uncomfortable effects to provide a haunting and biting backdrop for the turn of the century thriller. As always, elements of the maestro’s music are beautiful, with ethereal vocals by regular collaborator Edda dell’Orso, and this works even better in stark contrast with the harsher sections, with eerie woodwinds, the requisite whistling, wind instruments that sound like coyote howls, and low rhythmic bass that hits your head and your stomach at a point where you start to wonder if someone else is if the house with you. Still, if you’re going to be graphically murdered, A LIZARD IN A WOMAN’S SKIN is the soundtrack to have it done to you by.

Paradise Lost are a heavy metal band formed in 1987 in Halifax, England. Along with countrymates Anathema and My Dying Bride, they are credited for creating the subgenre known as Death/Doom Metal. With the release of the albums Icon (1993) and Draconian Times (1995), Paradise Lost also became known as pioneers of Gothic Metal, and have been noted as an influence on bands such as Katatonia, Opeth, and Lacuna Coil.

Shades Of God begins to integrate clean melodies & quieter passages that mark the band's transitioning sound, including "As I Die," known as the hymn for Paradise Lost fans

This reissue includes brand new liner notes and 2 bonus tracks taken from the original Japanese release.

Witchery is a Swedish thrash/speed metal band, formed by former members of Satanic Slaughter in 1997. Witchery quickly gathered a cult following with their combination of serious, technical thrash metal and all topics "dead". Their strictly tongue-in-cheek humour, often involving executions, murder, necrophilia, resurrections and other morbid topics can be spotted in song titles and album names as well as in their very own mascot - an animated skeleton called "Ben Wrangle."

Symphony For The Devil is Witchery's third full-length studio album. It was released in 2001 and has received underground acclaim from metal fanzines and webzines. The album continues in the style of previous Witchery releases, with thrash metal riffing and solos, but with a black and death metal influence. This album

Limited Edition Vinyl of "American Hustle - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" Available Exclusively for Record Store Day's Annual Black Friday Event

Includes Tracks by Steely Dan, Wings, David Bowie, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and a previously unreleased track by Jeff Lynne

Madison Gate Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, are releasing American Hustle - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, a collection of music from the critically-acclaimed box office hit with ten Oscar-nominations, in a two 12" LP gatefold blue and red colored 150 gram vinyl edition featuring six songs from the movie not included on the CD version. The 12” Vinyl will be available exclusively at independent retailers, as part of Record Store Day's annual Black Friday event on November 28th, 2014.

American Hustle - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack premieres "Stream Of Stars," a previously-unreleased song from the legendary Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra, Traveling Wilburys) alongside ELO's "Long Black Road," an ultra-rare track previously available only on the Japanese release of Zoom, ELO's final studio album.

The soundtrack album showcases an array of evocative 70s classics--including Wings' "Live And Let Die," Donna Summer's "I Feel Love," Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", the Bee Gees' “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" and more--while introducing provocative new tracks like Lebanese-American singer Mayssa Karaa's Arabic cover rendition of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," produced by multiple Grammy nominee Mark Batson (Eminem, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews Band). Susan Jacobs served as Music Supervisor for the film's soundtrack.

The new 12" 2LP gatefold vinyl release of the album features six songs used in the film, which were not included on the CD. The exciting new additions to the American Hustle - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack album are songs by Steely Dan ("Dirty Work"), The Temptations (“Papa Was A Rollin' Stone”), Todd Rundgren ("I Saw The Light"), David Bowie ("The Jean Genie"), Frank Sinatra ("The Coffee Song [They've Got An Awful Lot Of Coffee In Brazil]") and Ella Fitzgerald ("It's De-Lovely").

Director David O. Russell meticulously supervised the creation of this exclusive vinyl edition of the soundtrack, supplying hand-written excerpts from the scrip, unique imagery from the film and artwork to enhance the look and feel of the album's gatefold and sleeve.

Russell deploys the music in American Hustle to drive and develop action and emotion, illuminating the interior of his characters and intensifying the 70s cultural milieu of the movie. Many film and music critics have praised the film's music as an essential component in a thrill-packed cinematic adventure. "The movie's exhilaration is in how Russell's filmmaking fever lights up everything it touches," wrote Owen Gleiberman in his "A" review of American Hustle in Entertainment Weekly (January 15, 2014).
