Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SoundStageDirect

Blind Melon (Pre-Order) by Blind Melon

Blind Melon is the eponymous debut album by acclaimed Rock band Blind Melon, released in 1992, featuring breakthrough single “No Rain”. Fronted by singer Shannon Hoon (who can be heard doing backing vocals on Guns N Roses’ Use Your Illusion I and II) Blind Melon had a distinctive sound, influenced by Southern Rock and Psychedelic Rock.

Songs like “Soak The Sin” and “Tones Of Home” evoke Hard Rock with a funky sound; “Time” resembles Grateful Dead-style improvisational music and acoustic songs like “Change” and “No Rain” hinted at Pop and Folk influences. The band recorded the bulk of the album with producer Rick Parashar (who had produced Pearl Jam’s Ten) at London Bridge Studio in Seattle, Washington.

Blind Melon’s production is marked by the use of outdated amplifiers and other antiquated studio technology. Modern studio effects were not used in its production as the band wanted to create a pure and intimate sounding record.

The Walking Dead is an American television drama series developed by Frank Darabont and is based on the comic book series of the same name. The series stars Andrew Lincoln as sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes who awakens from a coma to fi nd the world dominated by flesh-eating “walkers” resembling the zombies of George A. Romero’s horror movies. The story unfolds as he sets out to find his family and encounters many other survivors along the way.

The Walking Dead premiered in October of 2010 in the United States and based on the immediate strong response from viewers, AMC quickly renewed the series for a second season of 13 episodes. Two episodes into the second season, AMC announced that the show would return for a third and fourth season.

The series has been very well received by both fans and critics, having been nominated for countless awards including a Writers Guild of America Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series Drama. The series has also attained strong Nielsen ratings, beating various records for a cable series, including receiving 10.9 million viewers for it’s season three premiere to become the most watched basic cable telecast in history.

Record Store Day Recap

Record Store Day Retailers Report Big Spikes, Best-Ever Sales

Billboard talked to Record Store Day co-founder Michael Kurtz about exclusives showing up on Ebay even before the event took place. Kurtz explained: "Regarding the eBay stuff that was up last week: We checked and the vast majority [of sellers] were people who did not have the releases -- we know this because they had not arrived in the stores yet -- but were flippers who presented themselves as having them, with (presumably) the plan to go into the stores to get them and then flip them. This is a violation of eBay rules and we’ve reported them."

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

Beverley Martyn - The Phoenix and the Turtle

Beverley Martyn recorded her first single "Babe I'm Leaving You" in 1965, and was chosen to launch Deram Records one year later with the Randy Newman penned single "Happy New Year". She contributed to the Simon & Garfunkel album Bookends and appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival on 16 June 1967. In 1969 she met John Martyn, whom she later married, and as a duo they issued two albums, Stormbringer! and The Road To Ruin. At various times, Martyn has worked with Levon Helm, Jimmy Page, Richard Thompson, Davy Graham and Sandy Denny. In December 2013, Beverley appeared at the Royal Festival Hall as part of a celebration of Bert Jansch, alongside friends and contemporaries such as Donovan and Robert Plant.

April 2014 will see the release of her new album entitled The Phoenix And The Turtle. Described by Beverley as a very personal album, it features songs written throughout her entire career, from her very first song, "Sweet Joy", to the previously unrecorded Nick Drake & Beverley Martyn song "Reckless Jane". The Phoenix and the Turtle is Beverley's first album in fourteen years and features contributions from ex-Counting Crows bass player Matt Malley, and ex-Los Lobos drummer Victor Bisetti.

This is the 30th Bob Dylan album, released in 1997. Time Out of Mind is hailed as one of Dylan's best albums, and it went on to win three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1998.

The album features a particularly atmospheric sound, the work of producer (and past Dylan collaborator) Daniel Lanois, whose innovative work with carefully placed microphones and strategic mixing. Sonically, the album is reminiscent of Oh Mercy, the last album Dylan recorded with producer Daniel Lanois, but Time Out of Mind has a grittier foundation - by and large, the songs are bitter and resigned, and Dylan gives them appropriately anguished performances.

Original vinyl copies of Time Out Of Mind were made in small numbers, making this official reissue a much needed one!

Short Bus is the debut album from Filter. The alternative/industrial rock group was formed by orginal Nine Inch Nails touring guitarist Richard Patrick and guitarist/programmer Brian Liesegang.

The album was originally released in 1995 and includes the hit single "Hey Man Nice Shot". The track was heavily played by alternative radio and MTV in the States and soon reached gold status. "Hey Man Nice Shot" was also included on the soundtrack for the movie Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight in 1995 before Short Bus was released. In need of a live band to tour, Patrick and Liesegang recruited Geno Lenardo on guitar, Frank Cavanagh on bass, and Matt Walker on drums, who are also featured in the video for the album's second single, "Dose". In support of the Short Bus album, Filter toured with The Smashing Pumpkins in Europe.

Dave Mason - It's Like You Never Left

It's Like You Never Left is Dave Mason's fourth solo studio album and the follow up to the album Headkeeper (1972). David Mason first found fame with the rock band Traffic, after which he pursued a rather successful solo career. Mason has played and recorded with many of the era's most notable pop and rock musicians, including Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash and Steve Winwood.

It's Like You Never Left was originally released in 1973 peaking at #50 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts. On the album Graham Nash sang harmony vocals on "Baby, Please," "Every Woman," and a new version of "Head Keeper". Stevie Wonder plays harmonica on "The Lonely One" and George Harrison (under the pseudonym "Son of Harry"  for contractual reasons) contributed slide guitar to "If You've Got Love. The album is finally available again on 180 gram audiophile vinyl in a beautiful gatefold sleeve.

Ennio Morricone - Collected

Ennio Morricone composed and arranged scores for more than 500 film and television productions, making him one of the most influential and best-selling film composers since the late 1950s. He has sold well over 70 million records worldwide. His score for Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In The West is one of the top 5 best-selling original instrumental scores in the world today, with about 10 million copies sold.

Collected is a definitive journey through the vast work of Morricone, stopping by landmark spaghetti westerns like A Fistful Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Once Upon A Time In America and most recently, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained.

Dallas Buyers Club follows the Oscar winning performance by Matthew McConaughey portraying the '80s real life character Ron Woodroof, who's suddenly being diagnosed as H.I.V.-positive and given 30 days to live. Yet he will not, and does not, accept a death sentence. A crash course of research reveals a lack of approved treatments and medications in the U.S., so Ron crosses the border into Mexico. There, he learns about alternative treatments and begins smuggling them into the U.S.

An outsider to the gay community, Ron finds an unlikely ally in fellow AIDS patient and transsexual Rayon (another Oscar Winning performance by Jared Leto). They establish a "buyers club," where H.I.V.-positive people pay monthly dues for access to the newly acquired supplies. With a growing community of friends and clients, Ron fights for dignity, education, and acceptance. In the years following his diagnosis, the embattled Lone Star loner lives life to the fullest like never before.

The soundtrack to triple Academy Award winning feature film Dallas Buyers Club contains songs by Shuggie Otis, My Morning Jacket, T. Rex and actor/singer Jared Leto's Thirty Seconds To Mars. The first 1000 copies of this double LP are uniquely pressed on Gold and Blue vinyl (each record a different colour!).

Monk's Dream is the first album jazz musician Thelonious Monk released on Columbia Records. It was recorded in 4 days in autumn 1962 and issued a year later. The Thelonious Monk Quartet consisted of Monk (piano), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), John Ore (bass), and Frankie Dunlop (drums). Jazz scholars and enthusiasts alike also heralded this combo as the best Monk had been involved with for several years. Although he would perform and record supported by various other musicians, the tight dimensions that these four shared has rarely been equaled in any genre.

On tracks such as "Five Spot Blues" and "Bolivar Blues," Rouse and Dunlop demonstrate their uncanny abilities by squeezing in well-placed instrumental fills, while never getting hit by the unpredictable rhythmic frisbees being tossed about by Monk. Augmenting the six quartet recordings are two solo sides: "Just a Gigolo" and "Body and Soul." Most notable about Monk's solo work is how much he retained the same extreme level of intuition throughout the nearly two decades that separate these recordings from his initial renderings in the late '40s.  On 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Neil Young A Letter Home Limited Edition Box Set

Neil Young will release a CD, digital album and a Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set of his recent vinyl album A Letter Home, out on Reprise Records on May 27th.

Young describes the album as "an unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past recorded on ancient electro-mechanical technology captures and unleashes the essence of something that could have been gone forever."

According to the record label:  “The album begins with Neil recording a spoken letter to his late mother, informing her of his personal and present state of affairs which sets the tone and atmosphere for the duration of the album. He does this once again at the beginning of Side 2 in a way which could explain why he’s selected these particular songs to record. In essence, this presentation is, as its title implies, A Letter Home from Neil. This is a deeply personal and expressive listening experience which is as real and raw emotionally as it is sonically and yet light of touch in its form and flow”.

Half Japanese Releasing First LP in 13 years

Limited edition Orange/Blue split color 7" Out Now!

We are extremely excited to announce that Joyful Noise has signed legendary punk band Half Japanese, who will be releasing their first album in 13 years this summer. If you are unfamiliar with this band, we will get you caught up: Half Japanese is one of the most influential bands of all time. Fronted by our "Artist in Residence" Jad Fair, Half Japanese spearheaded the DIY and Lo-Fi movements, influencing countless bands such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, and perhaps most notably, Kurt Cobain (who ranked Half Japanese amongst his top 50 favorites, had them open the "In Utero" tour, and was wearing their t-shirt when he died). Without exaggeration, Half Japanese is one of the most important bands in the history of music, and it's an absolute honor to release their first album in over a decade.

To give you a surprise sneak peek at the new album, we are releasing a limited edition 7" featuring two new songs: "Refreshing" and "Do It Now". These are alternate recordings of songs which will be included on the upcoming LP. Available immediately to whet your appetite.

Limited to just 500 hand-numbered copies on Orange / Blue split-color vinyl, this 7" ships immediately. We have less than 250 available, so don't wait!

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

DEAR JERRY: I always loved Australian singer, Judith Durham, the original lead vocalist of the Seekers.

After four years of hits (1965-1968), they disbanded, only to resurface in 1970 as the New Seekers, but, unfortunately, without Durham.

How about some of the other "New" groups?

For example, were the New Christy Minstrels just a newer band that evolved from an earlier group named the Christy Minstrels?

Perhaps they were around and simply didn't become popular.
—Lucy Vasquez, Flagstaff, Ariz.

DEAR LUCY: Not everything old is new again. Most of the "New" groups have no connection whatsoever to previous artists with the same name, sans the "New."

Examples: The 1979 New York band named New England, has no connection to England, an English group who recorded in 1977. Same goes for New Horizons of the '80s and Horizons of 1964; New Establishment of the early '70s and Establishment from the mid-'60s; and New Dimensions of the mid-'60s and Dimensions of 1960.

Others adopted a "New" (fill in blank) moniker that is completely original, and not inspired by anyone who came before.

Examples: Remove the "New" and you'll have trouble finding earlier groups named Birth; Colony Six; Edition; Kids on the Block; Order; and Vaudeville Band.

Then we have the Seekers, who have an undeniable connection to the New Seekers. Keith Potger, one of the four original Seekers, formed the New Seekers.

Others in this category include Kingston Trio/New Kingston Trio; Marketts/New Marketts; Young Hearts/New Young Hearts; Rotary Connection/New Rotary Connection; Cactus Band/New Cactus Band; Hollywood Argyles/New Hollywood Argyles; Riders of the Purple Sage/New Riders of the Purple Sage; and Mississippi Sheiks/New Mississippi Sheiks, etc.

Then there is the New Christy Minstrels, who, without any direct lineage to the Christy Minstrels, chose to revive the name of a 100-year-old group.

Founded in 1843 by Edwin P. Christy, and including his stepson George Christy, the Minstrels' blackface music and comedy shows were wildly popular from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, in the U.S. as well as Europe.

As with most ensemble acts, Christy's personnel changed frequently, and by the time phonographs and records were invented, Edwin and George Christy were both dead.

We only know of four records made by this troupe, all recorded in 1907 for Victor Records, and all 10-inch, single-sided 78 rpms.

Unlike most singles of the past 100-plus years, with one selection on each side, these Victor Talking Machine Records often had two or more tunes on the one side.

With sequentially numbered titles, each Minstrels' label identified the specific songs or skits in a subtitle:

"The Christy Minstrels (Songs of College Life - My Kickapoo Queen)" (Victor 5097)
"The Christy Minstrels No. 2 (Yankee Doodle Negroes - San Antonio)" (Victor 5098)
"The Christy Minstrels No. 3 (Good-Bye New York Town - My Creole Saidee)" (Victor 5122)
"The Christy Minstrels No. 4" (Victor 5135)

Either Victor made far fewer of the fourth disc, or their distribution varied greatly from the first three, but "The Christy Minstrels No. 4" is so rare we have yet to identify its subtitles.

Of course this degree of rarity is reflected in the marketplace. Copies of the first three can be found in the $30 to $50 range, but "No 4" could be 10 times as much.

IZ ZAT SO? When Randy Sparks formed the New Christy Minstrels in 1961, he could not have imagined that over 250 different singers and instrumentalists would, over the next 50 years, be Minstrel members.

For many, Randy's group provided the launching pad for a successful solo career in show business.

Some of the better-known NCM alumni, by year they joined, are:

1961: Jim Yester (Lovin' Spoonful member)
1962: Dolan Ellis (Arizona's Official State Balladeer); Barry McGuire ("Eve of Destruction"); Larry Ramos (Association member)
1963: Gene Clark (Byrds member)
1965: Pat Henderson (half of Skiles and Henderson)
1966: Kim Carnes ("Betty Davis Eyes"); Kenny Rogers; Mike Settle; Terry Williams (Kenny, Mike, Terry, and Thelma Camacho formed The First Edition)
1967: Keith Barbour ("Echo Park"); Karen Black (actress); Thelma Camacho (First Edition co-founder)
