R.E.M. Re-Teams with Jacknife Lee for New Album; New Album Due Spring 2011

R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills have just finished recording their 15th studio album, which will be released in Spring 2011 by Warner Bros. Records. The band has re-teamed with Grammy Award-winning producer Jacknife Lee, who produced R.E.M.’s acclaimed previous album 'Accelerate'. He is also noted for his work on albums by U2, Snow Patrol, The Hives, and indie stalwarts Kasabian, The Editors, Aqualung, and Bloc Party.

R.E.M. and Lee have been recording in New Orleans at the Music Shed and in Berlin at the famed Hansa Studios, where several legendary albums, including David Bowie’s Heroes, U2’s Achtung Baby, and Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life, were made. Additional recording and mixing was done at the venerable Blackbird Studio in Nashville.

The new album will be the follow-up to 2008’s charging 'Accelerate', which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, topped the Alternative, Rock, Digital, and Internet (physical goods) charts in the U.S., and debuted at No. 1 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. It spawned three hit singles “Supernatural Superserious,” “Hollow Man,” and “Man-Sized Wreath.” The band also released a two-CD live set, entitled R.E.M. Live At The Olympia, last October.

Hed)pe have revealed the cover art and track listing for their upcoming new studio album "Truth Rising", which lands in stores October 26th through Suburban Noize. Leonard Skinner Passes Away

Leonard Skinner, the no-nonsense basketball coach and gym teacher at Jacksonville, Florida's Robert E. Lee High School in the 1960s, whose name is forever linked with legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, passed away early Monday morning at 77 years old.

Born Forby Leonard Skinner, the gym teacher infamously enforced the school's draconian dress code on his students, including Lynyrd Skynyrd founder and late vocalist Ronnie Van Zant. Writes local paper The Florida-Times Union, "The story goes this way: The band named itself in a smart-aleck tribute to the basketball coach and gym teacher at Robert E. Lee High School, the tough guy who sent some of the musicians to the assistant principal's office because their hair was too long - it touched their collars in the back."

Upon hearing the news of the passing of his band's namesake, Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington has written on the band's site, "Coach Skinner had such a profound impact on our youth that ultimately led us to naming the band, which you know as Lynyrd Skynyrd, after him. Looking back, I cannot imagine it any other way. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time."

This iconic duet comes from Bing’s final special, taped just five weeks before his death in 1977, Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas. This special can be found in the forth-coming, November 9th, Infinity Entertainment Group DVD release, BING CROSBY: THE TELEVISION SPECIALS – Volume Two: The Christmas Specials. Included in this premiere, four-hour plus, two-disc collection are Bing’s first holiday special; his first color special; Bing Crosby and the Sounds of Christmas from 1971 and Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas. In 1981, American composer Harry Warren died (age 88). Wrote over 800 songs including "I Only Have Eyes For You," (a hit for The Flamingos and Art Garfunkel), "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," "Jeepers Creepers," "That's Amore" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo." Warren's songs have been featured in over 300 films.

Irving Berlin died at the age of 101 in 1989.


History:

In 1943, Kate Smith finished her War Bond radio appeal. She had stayed on the air 13 continuous hours and collected $39 million in bond pledges.

In 1958, after receiving special permission from the US Army, Elvis Presley gave one last press conference at the Military Ocean Terminal in Brooklyn. He then joined the rest of the 3rd Armored Division on the USS General Randall for a voyage to Bremerhaven, Germany.

The Beatles played at the Indra Club, Grosse Freiheit, Hamburg, West Germany in 1960.

Johnny Cash played the first of two nights at The White Horse Academy, Trenton, New Jersey in 1962.

In 1962, the Springfields (Dusty Springfield, her brother Tom and their friend, Tim Field) had "Silver Threads and Golden Needles," enter the US Top 20 and became the first British vocal group to chart that high in America.

The Doors appeared on the Murray the K show on WPIX-TV in New York City in 1967 performing "People Are Strange" and "Light My Fire."



In 1969, a new weekly TV show 'The Music Scene' aired on ABC for the first time. Stevie Wonder Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Tom Jones, Cass Elliot, James Brown, Janis Joplin and Sly and the Family Stone were all booked to appear on the show.

David Bowie kicked of the North American leg of his Ziggy Stardust world tour at the Music Hall in Cleveland, Ohio in 1972.

The Rolling Stones scored their eighth UK #1 album in 1973 when 'Goats Head Soup' started a two-week run at the top of the charts. Also a US #1.

In 1979, Jackson Browne, Chaka Khan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt and Tom Petty, appeared at Madison Square Garden, New York for two anti-nuclear benefit shows.

Def Leppard had their first major live review when UK music weekly Melody Maker reviewed a gig the band had played in Wolverhampton in 1979. With a 15 year-old drummer, the band had just released their debut 3-track single.

In 1979, Joe Walsh announced his bid for the US presidency (sadly, he didn't win - we got Reagan instead)

Geffen Records was formed in 1980.

John Lennon signed with Geffen Records in 1980.

During a UK comeback tour in 1983, the Everly Brothers appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In the audience: Paul, Linda, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Mickey Dolenz.

Former lead singer of the Babies, John Waite went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1984 with "Missing You."

In 1985, Joni Mitchell, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty all appeared at the first Farm Aid concert. The event to help small farmers in the US was held at the Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois, Champaign.

In 1990, Garth Brooks album 'No Fences' entered the US album chart. It went on to become the biggest selling country album of all time and sold over 13m copies in the first five years of release.

Nirvana played their biggest gig to date in 1990 when they appeared at the Motor Sports International Garage in Seattle. Drummer Dave Grohl who would audition for the band in a few days time was in the audience of 15,000 people.

Def Leppard were forced to cancel two US shows in 1992 after their sound-equipment truck was found abandoned, after one of the bands driver's had attempted to rob a store. The driver was later charged of possessing drugs and criminal damage.

Also in 1992 - "MTV Unplugged" renamed one episode "MTV Plugged" when Bruce Springsteen played an electric set on the show.

The album "Psycho-Circus" by KISS was released in 1998.

In 1999, Diana Ross was arrested on Concorde after an incident at Heathrow Airport. The singer claimed that a female security guard had touched her breasts when being frisked; Ross retaliated by rubbing her hands down the security guard. Sounds kinky to me....

‘A Tribute to Heroes’ was aired commercial-free on most of the major US TV networks in 2001. The live program was organized to raise money following the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and New York’s World Trade Center. Neil Young, Tom Petty, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, U2, Limp Bizkit, Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam all performed. Manning the telephones to take pledges were celebrities including Jack Nicholson, Jim Carrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Robin Williams, Meg Ryan, Cuba Gooding Jr., Kurt Russell, Adam Sandler and many more.

In 2004, the man once known as Cat Stevens, Yusuf Islam was denied U.S. entry when a match is made between him and a name on the Homeland Security watch list. He was on a flight from London to Washington D.C. Stevens abandoned his career in the late ‘70s after becoming a Muslim convert.

Jimmy Page was made an honorary citizen of Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro in 2005 for his work helping its street children. The Led Zeppelin guitarist had opened Casa Jimmy (Jimmy's House) in 1998 which had so far supported more than 300 children.

In 2006, the Big Bopper was posthumously honored with a historical marker in his hometown of Beaumont, Texas.

In 2006, Neil Young was named Artist of the Year at the Americana Music Association's fifth annual Americana Honors & Awards ceremony at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The event recognizes outstanding achievements in Blues, Bluegrass , Folk, Country and other forms of American roots music.

In 2007, The Game was given a conditional discharge at Manhattan's Criminal Court after being charged with impersonating a police officer. Police said the star told a cab driver he was an undercover officer, ordering him to run several red lights. The rapper (real name Jayceon Taylor), claimed the cab driver noticed they were being followed and asked who was in the car, He said he told the driver they were the hip-hop police, and the driver decided on his own to run the red lights.

Also in 2007, Britney Spears was charged with hit-and-run and driving without a valid licence after she was accused of hitting a parked car and driving away from a Los Angeles car park on 6 August. The owner of the car filed an accident report on 9 August at the North Hollywood Community Police Station. The city attorney's office did not know whether Ms Spears' car had been damaged, nor did he know the extent of damage to the other car.

The Baby Grands Celebrate Release Of Sophomore Album

Award winning kindie rockers The Baby Grands return to the children's/family music scene this November with 'The Baby Grands II'

September 18, 2010 - ATLANTA, GA – The children’s/family rock band, The Baby Grands (TBG), are scheduled to release their second album November 16, 2010 on the independent record label Backspace Records distributed via The Orchard.

A 2009 National Parenting Publication Award (NAPPA) winner, one of the most prestigious honors for children’s products, TBG are thrilled to offer the family entertainment community a new album produced and written by both Ben Rowell and Chuck Nash.

Front man singer songwriter Chuck Nash, a Musician Magazine’s Best Unsigned Artist and full time performer, lives in Jacksonville, Florida. Ben Rowell, an Atlanta resident who spent twelve years touring the country as rhythm guitar player and songwriter for the Gainesville, Florida based band Big Sky, met several years ago while on the road. When they reconnected recently, the two found new joy in creating music together. “Ten new songs, one new face,” Ben Rowell smiles as he sums up The Baby Grands II, titled numerically a la Led Zeppelin, and his first family music collaboration with singer Chuck Nash. “Ben and I were on the same page from the word ’go’,” explains Nash. “We have a great symbiotic relationship, and even our studios compliment one another’s.”

Coming off of the top five Sirius/XM Kid’s Place Live hit “Why is it W?” Ben wrote for the debut TBG record, Ben knew he had a lot more in the tank for this second go around, which led to a new adventure in writing The Baby Grands II. The duo teamed up for songwriting sessions via iChat, sent recording files back and forth, traveled on weekends and survived many sleepless nights of recording to complete their new album. And in this slightly unconventional way The Baby Grands II was born.

TBG’s new sound is an accessible combination of melody driven vocals and keyboard lines, thoughtful lyrics and big guitars from the seasoned industry rock ’n’ roll veterans. If Fountains of Wayne, The Barenaked Ladies and Tom Petty had a play date, The Baby Grands would also be invited. Chuck explains, “We didn’t set out to sound like anyone, and then we found ourselves with an opportunity to put variety of musical styles on one record. I think you can hear some Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash, and even AC/DC influences in there as well.” Starting with “Hey!” and ending with “Goodbye,” Ben and Chuck have penned a catchy and diverse mixture of songs sandwiched between the two creating a concept album of sorts.

For two accomplished performers and songwriters most people first ask, “Why children’s music?” That answer is simple to them. Chuck and Ben each have a little one that is the epicenter of their respective worlds, much like music is. Chuck has a little girl and Ben has a little boy. Each is into writing creative, witty songs with their children as inspiration. Ben summarizes the experience by saying, “I’ve never had so much fun making music of any kind.” While enlisting help from some of their friends like Rob Peck (George Jones) on harmonica, Eric Brigmond (Donovan Frankenreiter) on keyboards, Brian Homan (Vassar Clements) on pedal steel and Ken Nasta (Royal Trüx) on drums, Chuck and Ben have created a family album that they truly can be proud of.

Pet Shop Boys To Release 'Ultimate' Greatest Hits Album

Alongside a special DVD...

The Pet Shop Boys are scheduled to release a greatest hits collection on November 1. The album, 'Ultimate Pet Shop Boys' will feature 19 tracks in chronological order from 'West End Girls' to 'Love Etc'. It is described by the band as a "comprehensive greatest hits collection". The album tracklisting will be announced shortly.

Meanwhile, 'Ultimate Pet Shop Boys' will be accompanied by a DVD featuring over three hours of BBC TV performances by the Pet Shop Boys. It also includes the band's complete Glastonbury Festival performance from earlier this year.

New album from Electric Penguins

The band's second album, aptly named II, is due out at the end of the month. Electric Penguins' sophomore offering II is set for a digital download release on September 24. A CD and vinyl release will follow on October 8, on Talking Tiger Records. Its first single, 'Highgate Hill' is available to download now on iTunes.

This self-recorded album, the Penguins tell us, is a "12 track feast of psychedelic cuts, which slides dreamily between electronic, folk and ambient soundscapes, with acoustic and club elements dispersed throughout the record." Quite the mouthful!

The EP offers up 4 spooky selections for your rockin’ Halloween party. “Possessed,” a 60s-tinged psychedelic number, features Worthen’s wicked vocals and a demonic guitar solo from Mr. Cartwright. The furious screamer “Rock ‘n’ Roll Ghoul” expounds upon the theme of flesh-eating music critics while drivin’ rocker “Dr. Phibes” is an ode to the popular Vincent Price villain. The duo close with the Hollywood Flames’ song “Frankenstein’s Den” with Cartwright on drum kit and Caroline Pond (Snake Oil Medicine Show) joining Worthen on doo-wop vocals.

ROCK N ROLL GHOUL is available as a 7” vinyl record and as digital downloads. The EC horror comics inspired art for the record was hand drawn by San Francisco artist Gus Cutty.

PRESS RELEASE: New York, New York, September 20, 2010… Seventy years after his birth and three decades after his untimely passing, John Lennon's message of peace continues to touch the masses, and his songs still resonate in the hearts and minds of fans around the world. At the request of Yoko Ono, Gibson Acoustic is very proud to offer three 70th Anniversary John Lennon J-160E acoustic guitars to celebrate the legacy of this extraordinary artist.

Accordingly, only a very limited number of these handmade acoustics will ever be available. In 1962, John Lennon was still an up-and-coming artist, and though one of two main singer/songwriters at the heart of The Beatles, was scraping by on the little money the band was bringing in at that time.

For his first quality American acoustic/electric guitar, Lennon had his sights set on a new Gibson J-160E - the problem was, he didn't have the money to buy it. With the aid of a co-signed purchase from Beatles manager Brian Epstein (who also co-signed for band mate George Harrison's J-160E), Lennon made the guitar his own, and put it straight to the business of making rock and roll history.

Recreated by the luthiers at Gibson's Montana acoustic guitar facility in period-perfect detail, the 70th Anniversary John Lennon models are available in three distinct versions to represent the instrument at three periods in Lennon's life and career.

The first, finished in Vintage Sunburst and limited to 500 guitars, represents the guitar as it was when Lennon first acquired it and used it on several famous Beatles recordings from 1963 to '64, including Please Please Me, With The Beatles and A Hard Day's Night. Additional specs of the 70th Anniversary John Lennon J-160VS include a 70th Anniversary John Lennon MOP signature on the headstock, 1960's laminated Sitka Spruce Top, mahogany back and sides, the classic vintage Sunburst lacquer finish, Jumbo 1960's Frets, Gibson authentic P-90 pickups, a historic adjustable bridge and a 70th Anniversary MOP engraved 12th Fret birthdate of John Lennon. MSRP is $4,728 USD.

History:

The Four Freshman got their first gig in Fort Wayne, IN in 1948.

At the end of the North American tour in 1964, the Beatles played a Charity concert at the Paramount Theatre in New York City, the 3,682 audience each paid $100 a ticket. Later that evening, they make yet another appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The Animals recorded "It's My Life" in 1965.

In 1966, George Harrison went to India for his first visit to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. OhMMMM

In 1969, Associated TV bought control of the Beatles' music publishing company, Northern Songs, for a million pounds.

During a meeting in London in 1969 between John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Lennon announced he was leaving The Beatles.

Based on the comic-book TV series Archie and his friends The Archie's started a four-week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1969 with "Sugar Sugar." It became the longest running one hit wonder in the UK after spending eight weeks at the top of the charts.

Blind Faith started a two-week run at #1 on the UK chart in 1969 with their self-titled debut album. The only release from the Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker & Rick Grech line-up also reached #1 in the US. The only UK gig was in Hyde Park, London on 7th Jun 1969.

In 1969, UK music paper Melody Maker readers poll results were published. Winners included Eric Clapton who won best musician, Bob Dylan best male singer and best album for 'Nashville Skyline'. Best group went to The Beatles, Best single went to Simon and Garfunkel for "The Boxer" and Janis Joplin won Best female singer. Bob Dylan 'best singer'? You gotta be kidding!

In 1970, Jim Morrison of The Doors was acquitted on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, but was found guilty of exposing himself during a concert at The Dinner Key Auditorium in Coconut Grove a year and a half earlier. At his trial at the Dade County Courthouse in Miami, Judge Goodman sentenced Morrison to six months hard labor and a $500, fine for public exposure and sixty days hard labor for profanity. The sentence was appealed, but Morrison was never brought to trial, as he would die in Paris France on July 3, 1971.

In 1972, Paul and Linda McCartney were arrested for the second time in four weeks for possession of cannabis this time at their Scottish farmhouse in Campbeltown. Dern vegans!

Grand Funk Railroad own the #1 spot on the pop chart in 1973 with “We're An American Band.”



The single "Born to Run" was released by Bruce Springsteen in 1975.

"Fame" gave David Bowie his first #1 in the US in 1975, the song was co-written with John Lennon.

Janis Ian went to #1 on the US album chart in 1975 with 'Between The Lines'.

The Bay City Rollers made their US TV debut in 1975 when they appeared on the 'Saturday Night Variety Show'.

In 1975, winners in this year’s Melody Makers Readers poll included, Robert Plant who won Best singer, Joni Mitchell, Best female singer, Yes won Best band, Genesis won Best live act, Best single, ‘I’m Not In Love, by 10cc, Best album Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin, and Brightest hope went to Camel.

The Captain and Tennille musical variety show premiered on ABC TV in 1976. (and my Mother loved them!) Me? I was out smoking pot :O)

Queen started a five-week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1980 with 'The Game', the group's only US #1 album.

Huey Lewis and the News started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart in 1986 with "Stuck With You."

In 1993, just back from a tour of Japan, keyboard player with The Charlatans Rob Collins was with out with an old friend. They stopped at an off-licence and his friend went in, half-jokingly saying he could rob the place. When he came out with a loud bang, Collins stupidly picked him up. The police arrested the pair the next day and charged them both with attempted robbery and possession of a firearm (it was a replica gun).

The Dave Matthews Band released ‘Under the Table and Dreaming’ in 1994, the album featured their first commercial hits "What Would You Say," "Satellite" and "Ants Marching." The album was dedicated to Matthews' older sister Anne, who was killed by her husband in 1994 in a murder-suicide.

Natalie Merchant started her first solo tour in 1995 after leaving the 10,000 Maniacs. She was supporting her first solo album "Tigerlily."

In 1997, Elton John started a six week run at #1 on the UK singles chart with "Something About The Way You Look Tonight," and "Candle In The Wind 97." A re-write of his 1974 hit about Marilyn Monroe. This version was raising funds for the Diana, Princess of Wales charity, following her death in Paris. It went on to become the biggest selling single in the world ever.

In 1997, Pearl Jam's 'Jeremy' video was cited as one of the reasons American teenager Barry Loukaitis had snapped into a violent rage that left three people dead. Defense attorneys took the unprecedented step of playing the video in a Washington court. Yeah, the video was at fault. No one blamed cartoons when I hit my brother over the head with a hammer, it was the hammer's fault. I saw Heckle and Jeckle do it with no harm done.....



In 1998 - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum paid tribute to Robert Johnson with eight days of activities. Johnson only recorded 29 songs before dying in August of 1938.

Former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page was honored for his charity work with underprivileged young people in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2005. Page helps support Casa Jimmy, a shelter for orphans, teenage mothers and other poverty-stricken young people that is administered by the Task Brazil organization. "The greatest satisfaction is not the decoration. It is knowing that I am able to help someone who needs help," says Page during the ceremony. Humble and full of class..

In 2005, Canadian JD Fortune, beat two other finalists to become the new lead singer with INXS after a worldwide search to replace the late Michael Hutchence. INXS held auditions in six continents as part of a reality TV series.

There's a lot of charity work on this day in 2007. First, Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover and drummer Ian Paice along with former Purple keyboardist Jon Lord and ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore perform at the Sunflower Jam 2007 benefit concert in London to raise money for a U.K. cancer charity.

Ex-Pink Floyd leader Roger Waters and Jon Bon Jovi perform at a gala celebrating the 10th anniversary of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation in New York. Former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, are honored for their support of the organization. The foundation provides instruments and music-education services to children. Bill, as we all remember, is an accomplished sax player. (2007)

Ozzy Osbourne and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash are in videos produced by MusiCares and the MusiCares MAP Fund to help bolster awareness about the perils of drug and alcohol addiction. (2007)

Young Jeezy went to #1 on the US album chart in 2008 with ‘The Recession’, the rappers fifth release.

The 2008 Farm Aid benefit concert is held in Mansfield, MA. This is the first time the event takes place in New England. Farm Aid co-founders John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Willie Nelson are the headliners – as usual. The Pretenders and Jerry Lee Lewis also take the stage. The seven-hour event airs on DirecTV's The 101 Network.

Metallica released “Six Feet Down Under” in 2010. It was a limited edition eight-song EP in honor of their tour of Australia and New Zealand. It has live recordings from the band's previous tours in the region.

Early Rickie Lee Gets Deluxe Mo-Fi Treatment

The opener to this heavily produced album “We Belong Together” owes its existence to Bruce Springsteen, but most of the rest channels Laura Nyro.

Old school talent packaging held sway in the early 1980s and the record labels had the money to invest in their choices. This follow up to Ricki Lee Jones’s debut is a production spectacular the likes of which no longer exist unless the artist has deep personal pockets.

Every note, every gesture, every drum hit and keyboard strike has been choreographed and perfectly shaped behind Jones’s vulnerable nasal whine or delicate wisp of a reminiscence.

She’s sold in the photos as a sex object not as a cool bohemian, which would be more honest and appropriate. The airbrushed album photos look as if Jones’s handlers saw her as a Stevie Nicks type. Her future albums would exude a basic honesty that eludes this overproduced extravaganza but it was a product of the times and of two producers, one of whom came from a father wedded to the “old school.”

So the overproduced aspects—the strings, the opulent backdrops and luxurious reverb and the preciousness of “Skeletons” are to be forgiven.

Mostly, Pirates is a superb sounding jazzy, folky time capsule back to a time when an artist was overwhelmed, probably against her own better instincts by well-meaning packagers. They gave Ricki Lee a fantastic send off on her way to albums that were more intimate, personal and superior communicators of what lurked inside.

No expense was spared here. Just look at who plays! Chuck Rainey, Steve Gadd, Steve Lukather, Donald Fagen, Dean Parks, Buzzy Feiten, Lenny Castro, Victor Feldman, Randy Brecker, David Sanborn and Tom Scott among others. It’s a veritable '80s “We Are the World” assemblage of musicians!

So yes, it’s not rock and roll and it’s not jazz. It’s not pop either. It’s really a producer’s extravaganza in which Ricki Lee Jones takes a backseat to the whims of the executives in charge. It’s a fascinating time capsule to an out of joint time but one where everyone involved was sure they were doing the right thing.

Through it all Ricki Lee Jones maintains her dignity as she pushes against the production onslaught. Just listen to “ A Lucky Guy” on side two. Like much of the rest, it’s a simple, breezy tune but it’s been produced to the extreme. Every note, every cymbal hit and background “ooh, ooh” has been considered and orchestrated. The engineers have recorded every sound as if the life of the whole production depended upon its being perfect and perfectly heard by the listeners.

Mobile Fidelity’s ultra-pure playback chain is the ideal conduit for this precise production and the resulting LP and SACD are both opulent and lush sounding without sacrificing transient speed and inner detail. Rickie Lee almost gets swamped here, but Mo-Fi’s mastering in both digital and analog formats keeps her breathing.

Laura Nyro’s legacy looms large here and if you missed her you owe it to yourself to go back and give her a listen after enjoying this.

Tennessee Ernie Ford recorded the immortal cut "16 Tons" in 1955.



A Fats Domino concert at a naval station in Rhode Island in 1956 ended in a riot. As a result, the base commander banned Rock n’ Roll shows saying the damage was caused by the "excitement accompanying the fever-pitched Rock n’ Roll."

On his twenty-first birthday in 1960, Frankie Avalon was given $600,000 that he earned as a minor from such hits as his 1959 US #1 single 'Venus'.

Bobby Vee started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1961 with "Take Good Care Of My Baby."

The Beatles, on tour in the USA in 1964, performed at Dallas Memorial Auditorium, Dallas, Texas.

The Doors appeared at Bido Lito's, Hollywood, California in 1966. Also on the bill The Seeds.

In 1967, the Doors appeared on CBS-TV's 'Ed Sullivan Show' and infuriate Mr. Sullivan when they sang "Light My Fire," which had been banned over the line "Girl, we couldn't get much higher.

In 1968, working at Abbey Road studios on new songs for their forthcoming ‘White Album,' the Beatles recorded 20 takes of "Birthday." Roadie Mal Evans added handclaps, and Yoko Ono and Pattie Harrison contributed backing vocals on the track.

Diana Ross recorded "Love Child" without the other Supremes in 1968.

In 1969, Tiny Tim announced on "The Tonight Show" to Johnny Carson his engagement to Miss Vicki Budinger. Carson asked the two to be married on the show. They made TV history with the wedding on December 17, 1969.

In 1970, Jimi Hendrix was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Mary Abbot's Hospital in London at the age of 27 after choking on his own vomit. Hendrix left the message 'I need help bad man', on his managers answer phone earlier that night.



Pink Floyd performed "Atom Heart Mother" at the Classical Music Festival in Montreaux, Switzerland in 1971.

The Who, Mott The Hoople, The Faces and Atomic Rooster all appeared at The Oval, London in 1972. Cool bill....

Billy Joel began recording the overplayed cut "Piano Man" in 1973.

One hit wonders Wild Cherry started a three week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1976 with the silly cut "Play That Funky Music." The song started life as a B-side.

The second annual Rock Music Awards ran on CBS in 1976.

"More Than A Feeling" by Boston was released in 1976.

The members of KISS all released solo albums in 1978. The members at the time were Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse kicked off a 23 date US tour at The Cobo in Detroit in 1978 promoting the album "Comes A Time.' (and in my humble opinion, one of his best efforts)



The Doors are hot. Their “Greatest Hits” goes platinum in 1981. What’s interesting is The Doors’ lead singer Jim Morrison has been dead for a decade and the rest of the group ceased recording shortly thereafter.

In 1983, Kiss appeared without their 'make-up' for the first time during an interview on MTV.

The album "Lick It Up" was released by KISS in 1983.

David Bowie won Video of the year for 'China Girl' at the first MTV Video awards in 1984.

KISS released the album "Crazy Nights" in 1987.

Garth Brooks went to #1 on the US album chart in 1993 with 'In Pieces.' The album spent 25 weeks on the chart and sold over 6m copies.

In 1996, At Sotheby's in London, Julian Lennon successfully bid just over $39,000, for the recording notes for the song Paul McCartney wrote for him, "Hey Jude." At the same event, John Lennon's scribbled lyrics to "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite" sold for $103,500.

In 1999, it was reported that Smashing Pumpkins bassist D'Arcy Wretzky had quit the band.

Bon Jovi performed at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London in 2002. More than 375,000 people viewed the live Web cast of the show.

In 2006, 73 year old country singer Willie Nelson and four members from his band were charged with drug possession after marijuana and magic mushrooms were found by police on his tour bus. Police had stopped the tour bus near Lafayette, Louisiana.

Foo Fighters, The Eagles and Bob Dylan performed at a private party in San Francisco in 2006 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the biotechnology firm Genentech. Nice perk.

In 2006, Sir Cliff Richard unveiled a plaque to mark a tiny basement said to be the birthplace of British rock and roll, fifty years after the "2 i's" coffee bar opened in London's Old Compton Street. The Tornados, Tommy Steele, The Shadows and Adam Faith were among stars who started out at the club.

Carlos Santana and wife Deborah co-chair the U.S. edition of Archbishop Desmond Tutu's 75th birthday festivities in Beverly Hills, Calif. in 2006. The event benefits the Artists for a New South Africa organization, which seeks to fight the African AIDS crisis and supports human rights and democracy in South Africa. 2006

One year later, Santana performed at the Dream Concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall. The event raises money for construction of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, pop singer Gloria Estefan issues "90 Millas" with the single "No Llores," featuring Santana.

Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx's biography, The Heroin Diaries: A Year In The Life Of A Shattered Rock Star, is in bookstores in 2007. " It's given me some closure on a lot of different issues, to be able to discover, through the book, what was driving me," says Sixx. He makes a book store tour in L.A. to promote the tome’s publication.

The US House Of Representatives passed a resolution in 2008 honoring the late Isaac Hayes as "a passionate humanitarian."

In 2008, the Martin Guitar Company partners with John Mellencamp to create a special John Mellencamp Signature Edition Martin Guitar - inspired by Mellencamp’s acoustic 12-fret parlor guitar he calls Maybell, believed to be one of the May Bell (or May-Bell) guitars built in the ‘20s and ‘30s. Martin donates a portion of the proceeds from sales to Farm Aid, a cause very close to Mellencamp.

In 2009, Leonard Cohen collapsed on stage during a concert in Valencia in Spain and was taken to hospital. He was later discharged after doctors told him he had food poisoning. Cohen was in the middle of singing his song Bird On The Wire when he fainted, prompting the band to stop playing and rush to help him.

John Fogerty was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting by the Americana Music Association in 2009.
